In a rare occurrence, Adam “Edge” Copeland will wrestle outside of the promotion he’s contracted to. And according to Copeland, there’s good reason for that.
On October 3, the AEW World Tag Team Champion will wrestle at Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling’s Northern Rising event, set inside Toronto’s Mattamy Athletic Centre, formerly known as the Maple Leaf Gardens. In a new video released by Maple Leaf Pro, the Canada native explained his long-time dream of wrestling at the historic venue.
His dream runs so deep that AEW CEO Tony Khan felt compelled to make it come true in collaboration with MLP owner Scott D’Amore.
In terms of doing this show, I’m contracted with AEW, but the beautiful part about Tony Khan and his outlook in terms of pro wrestling is that he wants pro wrestling to flourish,” Copeland said. “AEW and Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling are partners. It’s a partnership that can help wrestling thrive in a place that needs to have wrestling thrive. He also knew what it means to me, and how special this place is to me.
I don’t think I was going to be able to retire without a bit of a bee in my bonnet unless I did this. I think this allows me to go right. The seeds for all of this coming to fruition started with Scott D’Amore seeing an interview that I did where I said, my place, my hallowed ground that I have to perform in before I’m done is Maple Leaf Gardens. So he shot me a text, he goes, ‘Hey, remember me? I think we can make this happen.'
As of this writing, Copeland’s opponent for MLP Northern Rising has yet to be announced. His rare non-AEW appearance has already proven to a success, though, as the MLP event surrounding it sold out within days of ticket sales going live.
Copeland, a multi-time world champion, was born and raised in Orangeville, Ontario, Canada.
