Controversial WWE Executive Reveals Backstage Reaction To CM Punk 2011 Pipebomb

ByBishal RoyProfessional Wrestling Journalist

John Laurinaitis has revealed that Vince McMahon was not rattled by CM Punk’s 2011 Pipebomb promo, but WWE moved quickly behind the scenes to ensure nothing like that could happen again.

The former Head of Talent Relations offered the first hand account during a virtual signing with Signed by Superstars, where he was asked about the backstage environment after the segment aired on WWE Raw.

The detail makes Laurinaitis a uniquely conflicted source. He was the man Punk humiliated on live television during the promo, calling him a “glad-handing, nonsensical, douchebag yes-man.

” Now he is the one detailing the corporate fallout that followed wrestling’s most celebrated shoot-style moment.

According to Laurinaitis, McMahon and the producers were not nervous about the segment, but conversations started soon after about tightening creative control.

There [were] discussions about what happened and how [we] could not have stuff like that happen going forward,” Laurinaitis said.

Laurinaitis was WWE Executive Vice President at the time the Pipebomb aired in June 2011. After being name-dropped in the promo, he began appearing regularly on WWE programming.

Why Laurinaitis Is Talking Now

Laurinaitis was fired by WWE in the summer of 2022, in the wake of McMahon’s initial retirement as Chairman following a Wall Street Journal report about hush money payments made to four women. Former WWE employee Janel Grant later named Laurinaitis as a defendant in her lawsuit against WWE and McMahon, alleging sexual trafficking, assault, and misconduct.

He was later dropped from Grant’s lawsuit after he agreed to cooperate and provide evidence against McMahon. The judge in the lawsuit later approved a motion to move the case to private arbitration at the request of all parties, a development that could have fallout across several cases.

The signing is part of a wider return to the fan-event circuit for Laurinaitis, who has been booked for multiple appearances in recent months.
