WWE Legend Defends Sami Zayn 9-Day WWE Title Reign

ByBishal RoyProfessional Wrestling Journalist

JBL has dismissed the criticism aimed at Sami Zayn’s short-lived Undisputed WWE Championship run, arguing on his podcast that the nine days he held the title matter far less than the fact he reached the top of the card at all.

The former champion, John Layfield, made the case that simply becoming a world champion at that level is a career marker few wrestlers ever earn.

Zayn’s reign as Undisputed WWE Champion lasted nine days, running from his Night of Champions 2026 win on June 27 to his loss on the July 6, 2026 episode of Raw. The short run has fueled debate over whether the title change was worth doing, and JBL waded directly into that argument on his Something to Wrestle with John Layfield podcast.

Look, it did something great for Sami [Zayn]. Sami’s a world champion now. Now he’s ex-world champion. That’s something that’s very few people make it to be a world champion on that level. That’s something to be said,” JBL said.

He leaned on a piece of NWA history to underline the point, invoking Tommy Rich’s famously brief run with the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in the 1980s.

Tommy Rich, hottest baby face in the freaking world back in the ’80s. He was NWA World Champion for seven days, and when he was announced, he was always the ex-NWA Champion. You may have given Sami some real life out of here that he wouldn’t have had without these nine days as champion,” JBL continued.

You may have done something huge for him here. People always say, ‘Oh, he just held it for nine days.’ Tommy originally held it for seven. He held it, that’s the big thing. Now he’s got this to bitch about it, and I think it’s awesome.

How Zayn’s Reign Began And Ended

Zayn captured the title for the first time at Night of Champions 2026, outlasting Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a Triple Threat Match to end a decade-long chase for a world championship. The win represented the payoff to one of the longest-running underdog arcs on the roster.

The reign ended in unusual fashion. On the July 6 Raw in Chicago, Zayn was scheduled to defend against Cody Rhodes, but Gunther attacked Rhodes backstage and took him out of the match. CM Punk stepped in as the surprise replacement in his hometown and beat Zayn for the gold, capturing his eighth world title and his first WWE Championship reign in nearly 15 years.

JBL’s take lands alongside other voices in the locker room who have defended the short run. AJ Styles offered a similar perspective, urging fans not to get worked up over Zayn’s quick loss, and the broader conversation has drawn comparisons to how other short reigns have been received.

The fallout has continued outside the ring, with Zayn recently snapping at a heckling fan after the Punk defeat.
