Something has clearly changed in how Chris Masters views his place in the wrestling business, and his latest comments suggest he may have stopped waiting for a major opportunity to come his way.
Masters remains active on the independent scene and still has name recognition from his WWE run. However, he has not received another opportunity from either WWE or AEW. Speaking to Hannibal TV, Masters explained why he believes there may be more to that than simply bad timing.
Hannibal, I appreciate you bringing that up, but to me, basically, in my mind, you know, I just feel like—I mean, I haven’t even been invited back to WWE. So the way I see it is I’m pretty much unofficially blackballed, I guess, from pro wrestling, which, you know, it is what it is. But, you know, you would think that you would have gotten an in, and I could think of a specific instance of why that might be, but I’m obviously—I don’t want to go into it here and now and start this whole thing out of that.
Masters stopped short of explaining what he believes caused the situation, but he has apparently reached a point where he is comfortable accepting that another WWE or AEW run may never happen.
But, you know, it is what it is. I’m just kind of at peace with the fact that I might not get a shot with, you know, WWE or AEW.
That does not mean Masters never tried to get an opportunity with AEW.
When AEW was scheduled to run the Forum in Los Angeles, Masters contacted Christopher Daniels personally in the hope of getting an invitation.
You know, I did hit up Christopher Daniels, but he just kind of was very passive and kind of blew me off.
Masters made it clear that he was not asking to be handed a contract. He simply wanted an opportunity to appear at the Los Angeles event.
So, I just—you know, what are you going to do? You know what I mean? I’m not going to beg for an opportunity. You know, I was just hoping for an invite when they came to the Forum in Los Angeles.
The response was particularly disappointing because Masters and Daniels have known each other for a very long time.
But, you know, to get that kind of response from somebody you’ve known since before you even entered pro wrestling, going back to when I was 17, it was just disappointing.
And because of that history, Masters expected a more straightforward conversation.
You know what I mean? It was just, you know, I would have just expected something a little more direct and not so, you know, kind of blow-me-off-ish.
For now, Masters continues working independently rather than waiting for WWE or AEW to reconsider. But his comments have certainly raised questions about why he has not received another major opportunity.
