SAnitY Debuts At SmackDown Live Event (Photos)

20

SAnitY has finally made their WWE main roster debut.

WWE held a live event on Saturday night in Waco, Texas. At the show, the former NXT stable made their main roster debut when Eric Young and Alexander Wolfe took on Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows in a tag team match but lost by DQ once Killian Dain interfered.

If you recall, the sports entertainment company decided to call up the group that consists of Young, Dain, and Wolfe from NXT to the main roster and placed them on the SmackDown brand shortly after WrestleMania 34 in April.

Although they have yet to make their television debut on the blue brand, WWE has aired vignettes to hype their debut.

Tyson Kidd Reflects On His Career-Ending Injury

10

Former WWE Tag Team Champion Tyson Kidd (TJ Wilson) has reflected on the injury that ended his in-ring career.

For those who may not remember, Kidd was seriously injured three years in a dark match prior to a RAW TV event with Samoa Joe after taking the muscle buster.

He ended up getting C1-C2 spinal fusion surgery, and doctors said that there was a 95 percent chance of death. Thus, at the time, it was considered life-threatening injury as well.

Now, that his in-ring career is over in the sports entertainment, he noted in a recent post on his official Twitter account that he’s really enjoying his current role with the WWE, which is being a producer on the main roster.

He wrote the following:

“3 years ago my entire world was halted.  I had no clue what the hell the rest of my life would look like.  I really enjoy my current role and look forward to many more years contributing to something I love.”

Big Segment Set For This Week’s WWE SmackDown Live

A big segment has been set for this week’s episode of SmackDown Live.

WWE SmackDown General Manager Paige has announced that a contract signing between WWE Champion AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura for their Last Man Standing Match at the upcoming Money in the Bank PPV event will take place this week.

She noted in the post on her Twitter account that she will be overseeing the signing.

WWE holds this week’s show in Corpus Christi, TX at the American Bank Center.

The sports entertainment company has already announced that a Mixed Tag Team Match that will see Jimmy Uso team up with his wife Naomi to take on Aiden English and Lana, as well as a singles match between Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair, will go down on this episode.

The Shield Split: 4 Years On

30

4 years ago, with the swing of a chair, Seth Rollins bought an end to one of the most dominant and popular stables in recent WWE history, The Shield. At the time it seemed to make little to no sense. The trio of Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose were at their collective height, and coming off a winning feud with Evolution, they looked rubber-stamped to rule over the company, side by side, for years to come.

However, hindsight is a wonderful thing, and as time has shown, the end of The Shield was just the beginning, leading to all three Hounds of Justice to ride the momentum of their implosion to successful singles careers, the likes of which seemed just out of reach when they were together.

The break-up was the catalyst for a new era in WWE, and all three stars have continued to lead the company ever since, though obviously some have been more successful than others.

Dean Ambrose

Dean Ambrose bio

Whilst part of The Shield, Ambrose was painted as the de facto leader. He was their mouth-piece; a charismatic psychopath greenlit to carry the trio with the kind of frenetic unpredictability he has since become synonymous with. So when the split came, it was assumed he would be the first of the three to get a rocket strapped to his back.

This was not the case, and it would be two years before The Lunatic Fringe got his chance to hold a World Title, becoming the last of the trio to do so. A dilution of his character from the whirling ball of madness to just being “a wacky guy” also didn’t help.

Even though he hasn’t quite lit the main event scene alight as much as his former compadres, his post-Shield C.V. consists of one Tag Team Title reign, two Intercontinental Championships, a Money In The Bank victory and the aforementioned WWE World Heavyweight reign. He was however the first of the three to become a GrandSlam Champion.

Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns bio 5c14cb3de4bd5254d51975d58576d828

4 Wrestlemania main events in a row. That should be all you need to know about Roman Reigns standing in the company ever since the split. Whilst he was the most unpolished, and least critically popular of the three at the time, he was almost immediately christened as “The Guy” by the company, and has basically lived rent-free in the main event scene ever since.

Whilst some fans disdain for being made to accept Reigns as the face of company has reached john Cena-esque levels of pantomime, Roman has, in the ring at least, lived up to his billing, putting on excellent matches with everyone from AJ Styles, Brock Lesnar, Kevin Owens and even against his former brethren.

Despite his top guy status, he just misses out on being the most decorated of the three, with one US Title run, one IC run, three WWE World Heavyweight Championships and one (notoriously ill-fated) Royal Rumble win.

Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins bio 5b959c76bc8187e0697952267151501d

The Architect of The Shield’s demise, at the time Rollins was considered to be the one most at risk of slipping through the cracks and getting lost in the shuffle of WWE’s burgeoning roster. Oh how wrong we were. Becoming’s The Authority’s hand picked champion, Rollins has been on absolute tear these past 4 years, gaining a reputation as one of the best wrestlers not only in the company, but on the planet.

From lasting over an hour in a gauntlet match, to defending titles in eight separate countries on four different continents in the space of 4 weeks, he has growing into a beast of a workhorse for the company. All those miles and hours he has put in have not gone unrewarded, with him being the most successful member of The Shield in terms of silverware.

The KingSlayer has two post-split Tag Team Title runs to his name, along with one reign a piece with the Intercontinental and US belts. He also is a two-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion, one of which came about from a Money In The Bank win.

While a reunion has been teased and even attempted (you can’t really count late 2017 as the wheels fell off well before it was even out of the garage), and it would be insanely profitable for the company, you’ve got to commend the WWE for not fully pulling that particular trigger. It’s refreshing to see them hold off for so long and bank on all three to individually carry the company, becoming some of the biggest stars they have at their disposal.

4 years on from a moment that genuinely shocked and surprised audiences around the world, the break-up of The Shield has proved to be beneficial not only to the three individuals who ran roughshod over the company for two years, but also for the WWE, fans and wrestling as a whole.

What did you make of The Shield’s split, and it’s impact on the landscape of the WWE? Let us know in the comments section below.

Sami Callihan Threatens Chris Jericho, Jericho Responds (Video)

8

Impact Wrestling and MLW star Sami Callihan is threatening to show up on Chris Jericho’s cruise this fall. Callihan is not officially booked for the cruise, but his recent comments suggest he might show up there anyway.

Cameras caught up with Callihan yesterday as he was arriving for the Impact Wrestling TV tapings in Windsor, ON, Canada.

Sami Callihan Threatens Chris Jericho and Ring of Honor

”I don’t care if it’s the Chris Jericho cruise, a cruise I didn’t even get booked on, which is bullshit,” Callihan said. “What are you guys, afraid? Chris Jericho, are you just afraid of Sami Callihan? Ring of Honor, are you afraid of making money with The Draw, Sami Callihan? That is my question. I am sick of being disrespected because I am The Draw and there is not one person that will tell me differently.

The way I’m looking at it right now, the only bigger bitches than Impact management is Ring of Honor and Chris Jericho. So here’s the thing: I might just have to get my baseball bat and show up on this cruise because I do what I want, when I want.”

Not long after, Chris Jericho responded.

Sami Callihan in Impact Wrestling

Ever since the promotion’s TV tapings in January, Callihan has been playing up the “loose cannon” gimmick. He broke Eddie Edwards’s orbital bone during a segment filmed in January which received a lot of coverage.

Since that time, Callahan and Edwards have wrestled on Impact Wrestling and in Tommy Dreamer’s House of Hardcore promotion. They are scheduled to face each other on Impact Wrestling again this Thursday in a match filmed in the woods.

The Rock Offers Advice To Dakota Kai

6

In an interview with WWE.com, NXT Superstar Dakota Kai recently mentioned the Rock as one of her early influences.

“My brother was the one who actually got me into WWE,” Kai said when asked about first getting into wrestling. “He watched it all the time, and I started to watch with him. I was hooked on The Rock and his ability to captivate an audience. From there, one of my friends I used to do athletics with told me about a local company that needed more girls. That was in 2007, and I haven’t looked back since.”

The Rock responded to the article and Kai on Twitter.

The Rock Offers Advice to Dakota Kai

“Very cool and flattering @DakotaKai_WWE,” Rock Tweeted. “Thank you! Look forward to following your career. Work extremely hard, have FUN in the ring performing for the fans and always stay above bullshit backstage politics”

Kai and the Rock are both half-Samoan. Kai was also asked if she feels any pressure because of the rich lineage of Samoan wrestlers.

“I never felt any pressure about that,” she explained. “I’ve simply always embraced being ‘afakasi. Mum would make sure us kids would grow up with a strong sense of who we are and where we came from. I’ve visited Samoa twice and visited my mum’s home village of Lepea. She would always make traditional Samoan dishes for us, and we would have family get togethers somewhat regularly. Family is priority within the Samoan community, which means the support system I get from them is amazing.”

Dakota Kai was recently defeated by NXT Women’s Champion, Shayna Baszler, on NXT. The 30-year-old has now been in WWE developmental since April 2017. Before signing with WWE, she wrestled as Evie for promotions such as Shimmer and Stardom. Kai defeated Rhea Ripley as the NXT house show from Fort Pierce, Florida last night.

Stephanie McMahon Going ‘Undercover’

20

The hit show, “Undercover Boss” is having a WWE centric episode for their “Celebrity Edtion” which is set to air June 15th on CBS.

The series would normally have a boss of certain company/corporation go ‘undercover’ within that place of work and perform the duties of the lower tier jobs to get a feel for the way business is running from the ground floor. It appears as though Stephanie will be going ‘undercover’ at the WWE Performance Center with the female talent/trainees.

Stephanie’s Role In The WWE

WWE announced in December 2013 that Stephanie McMahon had been promoted to the position of Chief Brand Officer where she would further enhance WWE’s brand reputation among key influencers including advertisers, media, business partners, and investors. McMahon also serves as the Lead Ambassador of WWE and works with business units to support key growth initiatives as well as leading WWE’s targeted ‘Youth and Moms’ marketing programs.

Are you interested in the WWE centric Undercover Boss episode? Considering the fact that Stephanie has a distinctive voice and has been featured on WWE television for the best part of two decades will the Performance Center staff and trainees REALLY not recognise her? Col. Robert Parker Shares Details On Steve Austin’s Departure From WCW

10

Col. Robert Parker discussed “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s departure from World Championship Wrestling to World Wrestling Federation, and more while speaking to Wrestling Epicenter. Here are some highlights from the interview:

On Steve Austin leaving WCW for WWF:

“I was with Steve for about a year, maybe more, in WCW. We had the run with Brian Pillman and the Chicken Match and all that. It was just a real good time. During that time, I was making a trip with Steve and he told me he would be leaving. I was just shocked because he had a good contract, a really good contract. One well up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars! He had said he was done with WCW and wanted to go to WWF. As an old timer, I advised him ‘You don’t burn these bridges because if you do, you can never go back. If you do, things are never the same. Maybe you should do your year up and finish your contract and doing business on the up and up and then going in [to WWE].’

He was like, ‘No, no, no. I’m very unhappy.’ Of course, he did not advise me about the new character of ‘Stone Cold’ and shaving his head and all the stuff that had happened that made a lot of his success take place. Nevertheless, he went against my advice. When I saw Steve when I went in there in 1998 in WWF and he was doing so well and he and Vince were having the big feud. That year, he had made $10,000,000! [Laughs] He was able to look at me from across the dressing room and laugh. He said, ‘You know, Col. He’s got all his stuff together. He’s got everything. But, don’t let him handle your money!’ [Laughs] He was exactly right!”

On the growth of Major League Wrestling:

“To get back out of the box, at that time, they weren’t on Bein Sports yet. They were just, I guess, on YouTube. But, I knew this was a growing company. You can just walk into the back and see the people they have involved in every element of it. You can see, for a guy like myself, I can see they are going places and they are going places very quickly. So, being with these two boys [Dirty Blondes] and being with this company has been a real pleasure for me.”

Dezmond Xavier Talks Doing High Risk Moves, Impact’s New Direction, His Goals

0

IMPACT Wrestling’s Dezmond Xavier spoke to the Wrestling Epicenter for an interview where he discussed Impact working with other promotions, doing high-risk moves and more. You can check out some highlights from the interview below:

On the larger talent working in the X Division of late:

“I am still a firm believer that it is not about weight limits, it is about no limits. If you feel you can stretch the boundaries of reality, go ahead and step into the X Division and lets see what you can do! Brian Cage felt he can and has proven he can do so. It definitely goes to show it isn’t about size, it is about what you can do.”

On zero fear in doing the high risk moves:

“I kind of walked in with that mind set being influenced by some of the smaller guys and the X Division stars. Seeing the capabilities of the human body, I just went for it! I have a fearless nature so I was ready to dive in and see what my body could and couldn’t do. I think that is what put me in the position I’m in right now. I do know what my body is capable of doing and I’m capable of doing more. When the time is right, I do plan on bringing that out.”

On Impact working with external companies like Lucha Underground:

“I think that it is awesome. Unity in wrestling is something that I’ve always hoped would come about more. Instead of us trying to belittle someone else’s craft, lets uplift it! Ultimately, it is bettering overall wrestling. The unity between companies and breaking that 4th wall and it is going to reap beautiful benefits for multiple parties.”

On Impact Wrestling’s new direction under Scott D’Amore and Don Callis:

“I 100% support it. It is moving us towards our ultimate goal which is to be seen by more fans so they can have an appreciation for a different style of wrestling – New stars, new things to be seen! Just, different! We’re here to show you that wrestling is not just one way. There is another way you can have your ice cream, there is another way you can have your pizza, there is another way you can have your chicken wings. There is another way you can enjoy something you’ve been watching for a lot of years. It might be the way that you like it initially but, hey, you might come around to it!”

On his goals in Impact Wrestling going forward:

“(laughs) Number one is to win the X Division championship. Number two is to go down as the greatest X Division champion. And three, who knows? Maybe be a triple crown winner!”

Xavier also discussed his previous matches, his finishing move, his upcoming matches, and more. You can listen to the entire interview in the video below or read more highlights by clicking here.

What Is The Secret Behind The Bar’s Success?; Velveteen Dream Takes Shot At Ricochet

What Is The Secret Behind The Bar’s Success?

Cesaro replied to a photo uploaded by Sheamus of himself on Twitter, revealing what the secret to The Bar’s success is:

Velveteen Dream Takes Shot At Ricochet

Velveteen Dream took a shot at Ricochet on how he used to get low pay after matches in the indies.

https://twitter.com/VelveteenWWE/status/1003102327950249985

Ricochet vs Velveteen Dream

Ricochet and Velveteen Dream both failed to capture the NXT North American Championship to become the inaugural champions at NXT TakeOver: New Orleans. On May 9 Dream confronted Ricochet which led to a match the next week which ended in a no contest as Lars Sullivan attacked them both. The two then teamed up to take on Sullivan in a handicap match a week later but Dream back-stabbed his partner Ricochet during the match and they lost. On last week’s episode of NXT Dream challenged Ricochet for a match at NXT TakeOver: Chicago which Ricochet accepted.

The two will face off each other at WWE NXT TakeOver: Chicago II which will take place on June 16 at the Allstate Arena in Chicago.

WWE has officially announced Daniel Bryan’s opponent at the Money in the Bank PPV.

If you recall, this marks the second singles match between them as they wrestled each other at the Backlash event just last month that saw Bryan win by submission.

It should also be noted that the PPG Paints Arena is advertising Bryan vs. Cass in a singles match for the upcoming Extreme Rules PPV event that takes place Sunday, July 15, 2018, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thus, it appears that this feud will be continuing for at least another month.

The Money in the Bank pay-per-view event takes place on Sunday, June 17, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois at the Allstate Arena and will air on the WWE Network and some traditional pay-per-view outlets. Both Raw and SmackDown brands will be featured. Here is the updated card:

MLW Fusion Report: June 1, 2018

0

When I was a kid, I looked forward to Saturday because I could watch WWF Superstars. When I was a teenager, Monday night became my designated night of wrestling with Raw is War. I used to miss those days when I would anticipate a day of the week because of wrestling. Well, those days are back because MLW Fusion has made me look forward to Friday nights. This week’s episode rewarded my patience as I trudged through my work week (albeit a shortened work week).

The show opens up ANOTHER new interviewer. This time, her name is Vanessa Craft.

Let me just pause for a moment and congratulate (or maybe “thank” is a better word) Court Bauer for hiring these beautiful women to hold the microphones backstage. A job well done, Court, a job well done.

Anyway, Craft is outside Jeff Cobb’s dressing room when Stud Stable shows up with a stretcher. Colonel Robert Parker hypes the debut of Jake Hager (Jack Swagger) and pretty much says Cobb is going out on the stretcher.

The opening title sequence rolls. Schiavone, in a voice over, welcomes us and runs down the night’s card (we never actually see Schiavone and Bocchini tonight).

Jake Hager vs. Jeff Cobb

We head to the ring where Col. Parker introduces “the man that rules the world,” Jake Hager. I know Parker managed Sid Vicious for a long time, but that doesn’t give him the right to steal Sycho Sid’s tag line. From where I stand, Sid still rules the world. Hager just lives in it.

Watching Hager, I can’t believe it’s been ten years since he was the rookie with the irritating smile calling himself the “All-American American” and beating Matt Hardy for the ECW Championship. That was really the best he was ever portrayed. I hope he can have a return to greatness in MLW.

Cobb comes out next. I’m excited to watch Cobb without the Matanza get up.

This is a match of two big boys and it moves at a pace that I’d expect from two former heavyweight wrestlers. It’s slow, but it’s not boring.

Hager controls much of the match, which I guess makes sense because it’s his debut. The match should be his showcase. I would have figured that if he was going to get this much offense, he should be in there with a jobber.

Cobb impresses me with his strength and agility. At one point, he executes a powerslam and quickly follows it up with a picture-perfect standing suplex. He also goes for a sweet looking standing shooting star press, but he misses.

In the end, Cobb goes for a move that looks like Wade Barrett’s Wasteland, but Hager seamlessly reverses it into an ankle lock submission. Cobb taps out.

Cobb really sells an ankle injury. I just recently found out that a shoot ankle lock can break your ankle in seconds, so I appreciate what MLW is doing here.

We go to a commercial and when we return, we got a shot of an ambulance that Schiavone tells us is going to bring Cobb to the hospital. Wow. What a way to make the ankle lock and Hager look dangerous. The one criticism I have is that Schiavone tells us that MLW is going to look into Hager’s conduct. What conduct? Winning the match? Did I miss something? Did something get lost in the editing of this episode?

We get a series of segments and promos. First, MLW World Heavyweight Champion Shane “Swerve” Strickland is interviewed about his title match with Pentagon from last week. He calls the encounter one of his most painful matches. He doesn’t want to got through that type of match again but he’s still the champion. When he’s finished, he walks outside and spots Salina de la Renta, who approaches him and blames him for getting hit in the eyes with Pentagon’s red mist. Swerve tells her that she brought it on herself. She threatens the introduction of a mystery person. He basically tells her to bring it on, which prompts her to warn the champ to be careful what he wishes for. I’m sensing some tension between these two. Maybe she has the hots for him.

After a graphic announces that Fred Yehi will face Tom Lawlor next week, we get our next segment. Lawlor and Simon Gotch (Team Filthy) walk into the arena and are approached by an unseen interviewer. The interviewer asks about Lawlor’s match next week and Team Filthy starts making fun of the name “Yehi.” Lawlor even calls him Yeti. Hey, that’s what I said a few weeks ago! Lawlor follows the comedy up with saying that Yehi’s been out in the wild. Um, let’s just move on from that. They keep ragging on his name and say it sounds French, leading Gotch to ponder if Yehi was part of the Louisiana Purchase. You know, because we bought Louisiana from France. If MLW was going for two d—heads who thought they were funny but weren’t, they succeeded.

And then…sigh…Sami F’n Callihan. This promo did not make me hate him less. Let’s just get this over with.

Callihan says he’s a sociopath that doesn’t care about offending people. That’s true. He offends me every time I see him and he still shows up on my TV. Next, he says that what he did to MVP he’ll do to the whole roster. His army of…sigh… “like-minded individuals” will make people listening. I wish I could stop listening at this point. He proclaims that the like-minded army is pro wrestling, they are what this world needs, and they’re taking over everything. The promo ends when he makes the thumbs up/thumbs down gesture, which he feels the need to say “thumbs up, thumbs down” while he does it. I guess he’s doing that for the blind. I wish I was also deaf right about now.

Schiavone runs down the top ten contender’s list for June. It goes as follows.

  1. Tom Lawlor
  2. Pentagon
  3. Rey Fenix
  4. Sami Callihan
  5. MVP
  6. Jimmy Havoc
  7. Barrington Hughes
  8. Joey Janela
  9. Jake Hager (already?)
  10. ACH

Swerve, of course, is still the champ.

Kotto Brazil vs. Rich Swann

Swann is also making his debut in MLW tonight. His song isn’t asking if you can handle this, but his trunks are.

Swann cuts an inset promo in which he says he is a bunch of adjectives, but oddly none of those adjectives include “spousal abusing.”

The crowd chants “Can you handle this?” Swann gets on the ropes and encourages the chant. Schiavone is stunned that Swann has personality. I guess Tony hasn’t watched much wrestling in the past two years.

Watching Brazil and Swann move in the ring makes me realize that one needs a lot of core strength in order to be a wrestler. I’m 40 pounds overweight, so…yeah, a career in wrestling is not in the works for me.

I have to say, this is a really great match between these two. The story being told is that Brazil is a scrappy young fighter who’s looking for that breakout performance while Swann is the cocky veteran that showboats too much to the crowd.

There are a lot of submissions from this match. One of them is a variation of the Stretch Muffler, which Swann locks on to Brazil. I love Stretch Mufflers. I could watch an entire hour of Stretch Mufflers.

Brazil doesn’t go down easy. There are a lot of close two counts, including one after a handspring stunner by Swann. I’m starting to think that Brazil might actually get the upset.

Never mind. The match ends with a second rope Phoenix Splash by Brazil for the three. They fist bump after the match. The announcers say that it was a “defining match” for Brazil and I agree. He looked awesome tonight. Between this match and the match Brazil had with Trey Miguel two weeks ago, I think middleweight division (which I believe MLW is going to start calling their light heavyweight guys) is really going to be something special.

Sami Callihan vs. Joey Janela

They tease a commercial but quickly cut back to the show, where we find Brazil being blindsided by a bat attack from Sami Callihan as he’s trying to head backstage. I guess we’re going right to the main event.

Callihan walks down to the ring with his two goons. Wait, two? There was only one last time. Who is this second guy and when did he join the fray? Sometimes MLW doesn’t explain these things. Another example would be the announcement of Fenix joining Promociones Dorado right before his match with Pentagon a few weeks ago. When did this happen and why? Please explain this stuff! This is like when people turn heel or face in WWE for no reason. Don’t be like WWE.

Anyway, the new guy’s name is Fulton. This army of “like-minded individuals” looks like a poor man’s Sanity.

Martin J. Friedman has been at ringside at a private table with a lady friend since the Swann/Brazil match. Janela comes out and…oh, I see what’s happening here. If you don’t remember, Janela trashed MJF’s dressing room last week, leaving behind cigarette ashes, domestic beer, and a “prophylactic.” Something’s gonna go down, and I think Mr. Janela should have eyes in the back of his head.

Aria Blake looks like one of those 12-year-olds whose parents put her on the Maury show because she’s a terror at home and in school and they want Maury to send her to boot camp where she’ll be reformed and turned into a nice little girl again.

Back in the wrestling ring, Janela and Callihan have a hard-hitting brawl. Late in the match, Janela covers Callihan and gets a three count, but the ref takes it back when he sees Callihan’s foot on the rope. I don’t know if they ref botched the count or what, but the match continues.

Callihan hits a piledriver, but Janela pops right up and hits a superkick. That looked pretty sweet. I like when one guy gets hit with a devastating move but still musters up enough energy to knock his opponent out before collapsing.

The match goes outside, where Janela collides with Friedman and his date. The couple, their table, and their champagne crash to the floor. Before Janela can get back into the ring, Friedman bangs Janela’s head multiple times into the ring post and one of the arena’s support posts. Callihan takes advantage of the interference by hitting the Cranial Contusion in the middle of the ring, which garners him the victory.

Callihan’s army leaves the ring. Friedman stands over Janela and pours champagne over him.

As the show ends, the MLW medical staff check on Janela, who was busted open when Friedman smacked his head into the posts.

Final Thoughts

  • The audio on this show was a little weird. The ring sounded really loud. Sometimes the announcers were too low. The exchange between Swerve and de la Renta had muffled at times.
  • For some reason, I really like Stud Stable. Maybe it’s just the fact I like factions, but then again, I dread seeing Sami Callihan and his army on my screen. In Stud Stable, you have the tag team in the Dirty Blondes, the powerhouse in Mike Parrow, and the technical master in Jake Hager. It’s a great mix, but at the same time, they all have a communality- they’re a bunch of big red state s— kickers. Well, Parrow is from New York, but he looks like he belongs in a red state and he will still kick the s— out of you. With the talker in Col. Parker, this faction gets a big “thumbs up” from me (Oh, I’m sorry, do you need Callihan to show you what a “thumbs up” is?).
  • The Brazil/Swann match may be one of the best examples of story telling that MLW has produced on Fusion so far. It was clear, it was laid out well, and it was relatable. I could watch a rematch between these two…or three or four.
  • Did I mention that I hate Sami Callihan?

That’s it for this week. Follow me on Twitter (@CliffofDoom). I’m going to stop being a hermit that watches too much wrestling and get some sunshine. Bye now!

Don Callis On Tessa Blanchard, Eli Drake, Who He Is Emotionally Invested In As A Fan

IMPACT Wrestling’s Executive Vice President Don Callis appeared on Busted Open Radio where he shared his thoughts on Tessa Blanchard, Eli Drake while also revealing who he is emotionally invested into as a fan. Here are some highlights they sent in:

Don Callis on Tessa Blanchard:

“Love her. I just think she’s… I’m not even going to say she’s a great Knockout but she’s a great wrestler. It’s always those gender issues with respect to wrestling. It’s the man’s match, the woman’s match. Sometimes when you start talking about matches in the context of just ‘No, that was my favourite match’ and I had that back in the day when Gail Kim and Awesome Kong were working together. That was my favourite match, not just my favourite Knockouts match, that was just my favourite match of the night. And I think Tessa has the potential to be one of those transformational performers where it’s not about Knockouts match, non-Knockouts match, it’s just about her being a great wrestler. I like everything about her. She’s just so polished, she’s got a great mean streak and she’s got something that’s rare in the business, she’s got a fifth gear that she could kick into.”

Don Callis on who he is emotionally invested into as a fan:

“I’m pretty emotionally invested as a fan in Brian Cage and what’s gonna happen with Brian Cage. I think we’ve just really scratched the surface of establishing him as a monster and people always say Goldberg and at the start of this, my reference in booking meetings was always 911. I was like, ‘This is how we need to bring this guy out. It needs to be a slow build etc.’ So I think what’s really interesting to me as a wrestling fan is I want to get to know more about Brian Cage. We’ve seen him destroy people, we’ve seen he’s not just a big muscle guy, now we’ve seen him flying around with the best of them. I want to get to know Brian Cage the personality, ’cause he hasn’t talked yet. And I think that makes him for me as a fan, those are the guys that I was always like, ‘I wanna know more about what’s going on behind the curtain here’.”

“That would be a guy I would be invested in and on the Knockout’s side, how can you not as a fan be fascinated by Su Yung. The look that she has, the presence, the stuff that she does, very Muta-esque, and I was a big Muta mark back in the day. So those would be the two if I were watching the product that I’d go, ‘I need to see more of this’.”

On Eli Drake:

“I remember talking to Paul Heyman one night at a Denny’s, and Bully may have even been there for this one. And I remember I didn’t get a lot of time with Paul because I was always flying in for a couple of days and flying out, and I just had the sense, ‘I need to pick this guy’s brain, he’s such a resource’ and I remember saying to him, ‘Who’s the greatest… you know we’re talking about managers, I think Bobby Heenan and Jim Cornette are the two greatest managers of all time’ and he looked at me and he went, ‘Yeah?’, I go, ‘You don’t think so?’ and he goes, ‘Well the problem with those two is they’re too entertaining. So how are they heels?’. And Bobby Heenan was arguably one of the most talented people ever in the business, and I thought about that and I thought, ‘Yeah’. And I think that with Eli.”

“To use a baseball analogy, he’s a five tool player. But one of the things about Eli and I’ve said this to him, ‘You’re so damn entertaining on the mic that it’s easy for guys like that to slide into becoming a babyface. So it’s almost like you’re so good that maybe you need to be not quite that good and not quite that entertaining.'”

The tragic incident is still under investigation.

DDP On Ronda Rousey’s Push, WWE’s New TV Deals

2

WWE Hall Of Famer Diamond Dallas Page recently talked to CBS Washington DC where he discussed WWE’s new TV deals, Ronda Rousey getting a significant push early on in her WWE career. Below are some highlights from the interview:

DDP on Ronda Rousey getting WWE Raw Women’s Championship opportunity:

I think that would be like asking whether you’re a Republican or Democrat. You’re gonna have people say, ‘She’s who she is and she should get it.’ And other people are gonna go, ‘No, she didn’t earn it, she didn’t deserve it.’ But a lot people don’t understand all the work she put in to get to where she is today. So bottom line is, she’d be one of the highest paid people there. And she’s one of the highest paid people there because she draws and people are tuning in.

My opinion is, I think she’s gonna draw. I haven’t been watching enough to see her work, but I know what she did at WrestleMania and she killed it. So I think the girls are so good today. One of the things when you’re a great worker like a lot of these young ladies today, from Bailey to The Boss Sasha Banks. Charlotte’s one of the best athletes in the company. When they get there and they realize you’re in a feud with Ronda Rousey, guess what, you just got mainstream attention.

That’s gonna hold on for a while. Because I would never even push Ronda out of maybe doing a comeback [in UFC]. And guess what. She’s still a draw. She wouldn’t come back and go right against the champion, but she’d go out there and everybody would want to tune in. So don’t discount that either.”

On new TV deals acquired by WWE:

“Wrestling is cyclical. And if you look at the 80s, it had an unbelievable run and then it just fell down. 90s had the biggest run ever, because of the Monday Night Wars. People would say, ‘Do you think you’ll ever see that again?’ I say to them, ‘You’ll never see it like that again.’ See Vince [McMahon] has mainstreamed the television. And he’s the taken the wrestle and over the last 20 years made him a superstar not a wrestler. And the biggest star in the world is who? Is The Rock. Then out of wrestling the next guy would be John Cena. And then maybe Dave Bautista, because what he did in the wrestling world, but what he’s doing in Hollywood. He is an A List actor, now so is John.

You’re gonna see a lot of guys come out of that. You’re gonna see The Miz come out at some point and have a hell of a film career. Cody Rhodes just got five episodes coming up on The Arrow. He’s mainstreamed the boys, and the girls. Because it’s not like these crazy ratings that they had. We had better ratings than they had back in the day. But it’s more mainstream audience, so it’s a way more valuable audience.

So no, I’m not surprised at all. I’m super happy because they’re getting these kind of money numbers from the television and they own the network, the WWE Network. So owning your own channel on a spot where you’ve got it 24/7 and we’re talking about creating your own channel. Just like I did with DDP Yoga. My DDP Yoga channel with my DDPY workouts, it’s my own channel. And I’m constantly putting money into making it better. I’m like over $2 million into my DDP Yoga Now App, which is insane. And no one, and that’s including Beach Body or anybody else is doing it the way we’re doing it.”

Titus O’Neil Claims He Has ‘Everything’ To Become A Champion In WWE

39

WWE RAW Superstar Titus O’Neil recently did an interview with Natalya for her Calgary Sun blog, here are the highlights:

Titus O’Neil on his childhood full of hardships:

“My mother was the victim of sexual assault and I was a product of that unfortunate circumstance. She did all that she could with little to no money most of the time and set an incredible example for me with her work ethic. Despite my mother’s hardships, she was always a very giving person and our struggles allowed us to see how to get by with minimal resources. It also taught me important life lessons and because of that I learned how to work, not just for what I wanted, but also for what I needed and what my family would also need in the future. My test became my testimony and my ‘mess became my message.”

On his competitive spirit:

“My desire to be great in any area of my life all comes from my competitive spirit. I love competition and for years I was told what I couldn’t achieve in life. Once I started achieving, I developed the heart and mindset to help others do what some say couldn’t be done. Everything I have was acquired through hard work and I try to instill that in my life. It’s one of the most important aspects of being a WWE Superstar: working hard.”

On wanting to become a champion in WWE:

“I’ve always had goals to be as successful as possible in multiple areas of my life. I feel I have everything it takes to be a champion in WWE. I also have goals of continuing success outside of the ring with my charitable efforts through my Family Foundation as well as hopefully venturing into movies and television.”

Rev Pro Confirm Status of WWE Contracted Talents on Their Shows

1

One of the biggest promotions in the United Kingdom Revolution Pro (Rev Pro) has revealed the status of WWE UK contracted talents appearing on their shows.

Owner of Rev Pro Andy Quildan revealed via the Rev Pro Twitter account (in response to a fan question) that “Sadly those in the tournament [WWE UK Championship] and those who have also signed but aren’t in the tournament will no longer be appearing for us.” Whilst this outcome seemed inevitable this is the first time that an “official” announcement has been made publicly.

WWE have appeared to be far more aggressive in their pursuit of UK based stars since the reformation of the World of Sport (WOS) brand. We reported earlier in May that independent promotions outside of PROGRESS and ICW would no longer be able to feature WWE UK signed stars as part of their On Demand offering…however with Rev Pro’s announcement that anyone even appearing as part of the WWE UK tournament won’t be featured on their shows it changes the landscape of UK wrestling exponentially; several of the top stars on the scene such as Chris Brookes, Travis Banks, WALTER, El Ligero and Dave Mastiff have either been confirmed as WWE UK tournament competitors or are heavily linked to the UK brand.

Jeff Jarrett Heading to ICW for One Night Only

1

Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) has announced that WWE Hall of Famer and founder of TNA/GFW Jeff Jarrett will be heading to the company for a special one off appearance this July.

‘Double J’ will be making a special appearance as part of ‘Shug’s Hoose Party 5’ acting as the Commissioner for one night only. This isn’t the first time that WWE affiliated talents have acted as Commissioner for the Scottish based company; Former WCW/WWE Superstar Kevin Nash and Mick Foley have appeared at previous ‘Fear & Loathing’ pay per view shows in the same capacity.

This appearance will coincide with Jarrett’s UK speaking tour ‘Ain’t He Great?’ which starts July 23rd and heads to the following cities:

  • London – 23rd July
  • Edinburgh – 24th July
  • Sheffield – 25th July
  • Cardiff – 26th July

UK/Mae Young Classic Star Subject of BBC Documentary

0

Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW) has announced that their reigning Women’s Champion Piper Niven/Viper will be the subject of an upcoming BBC Documentary on Monday June 11th.

‘Fight Like A Girl’ will be shown across the United Kingdom and will be one of the highest profile spotlights on UK wrestling in the mainstream for the past few decades, potentially since the heyday of World of Sport.

Here’s part of the synopsis for the show: “By day, 26 year-old Kimberly Benson dons her smart workwear and goes off to her job in the family coach hire business. By night, with big blow-dried hair and head-to-toe in shimmering Lycra, she steps into the ring as Viper, one of the UK’s top female wresters. The contrast is not lost on her and in Fight Like A Girl, the first in a new run of BBC One’s Our Lives strand, Kimberly explains what it’s like to lead her double life. She reveals everything from how she copes with her rigorous training regime, to how she deals with homesickness, as the sport she loves takes her all over the world.”

If you live in the UK you can check out the show at 7:30pm on Monday 11th June on BBC One.

Two WWE Linked Stars Colliding in UK Tournament

1

UK based promotion Anarchy Pro are in the midst of their ‘Masters of Brutality’ tournament with the 3rd round upcoming in July. One of the more headline grabbing bouts taking place on July 26th will see two stars who have been heavily linked with WWE over the past few months collide.

The leader of #CCK Chris Brookes will be taking on Ringkampf’s WALTER at the East Yard in Camden Lock. These two stars represent the UK scene’s brightest performers and this should be an absolute barnburner of a bout.

If you’ve never heard of WALTER then he is certainly a performer that should be on your radar. The Austrian powerhouse has been dominating the Tag and Heavyweight divisions in wXw, PROGRESS and PWG over the past couple of years and he is now being slated as a future WWE/NXT signee (even if he denies any sort of negotiations). The de-facto leader of the Ringkampf stable (alongside Timothy Thatcher and previously NXT roster member Axel Dieter Jr) has a ton of potential on the world stage and has already garnered critical praise from the likes of Dave Meltzer, who gave his PWG All-Star Weekend bout against Zack Sabre Jr from October 2017 a 5 star rating.

Chris Brookes is one of the most in demand stars on the UK circuit right now, his hugely successful run alongside Kid Lykos in #CCK has seen him catapulted into the ranks of PROGRESS wrestling’s main event scene and he was tipped as one of the favourites to win the Super Strong Style 16 tournament but he eventually fell short. Since Lyko’s most recent injury Brookes has once again been establishing himself as a legitimate singles star and this bout against WALTER will only help build his profile as one of the nation’s best.

NXT Superstar Returning to PROGRESS for Chapter 71

1

PROGRESS Wrestling has announced that NXT Superstar Nixon (Steffanie) Newell will be returning home to the United Kingdom as part of their Chapter 71 show ‘F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S’

‘The Girl with the Shiniest Wizard’ will be challenging PROGRESS Women’s Champion Jinny in a bout for the prestigious title. This will be Jinny’s first defence of the belt since defeating the inaugural Champion Toni Storm and ending her nearly year long title reign by exactly a day.

Whilst Newell is still contracted to NXT this is an interesting development to the story surrounding PROGRESS and WWE’s business relationship. Several reports have indicated that the UK based promotion will be heading to the WWE Network imminently and stars from WWE’s NXT and 205 Live roster have been making sporadic appearances for PROGRESS over the past few months; the most recent being Kassius Ohno’s role as part of the Super Strong Style 16 tournament in Alexandra Palace this past month.

Steve Austin Discusses The Problem With The ‘What’ Chant

16

WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin has discussed the problem with a chant he helped make famous.

One of the signatures of Austin’s entrance was him talking as he walked down the ramp and as a result of being a great talker, he came up with the word that started a chant that is still around today.

During a recent episode of The Steve Austin Show (transcript courtesy of Wrestling Inc), the WWE Hall of Famer talked about the problem with the ‘What’ chant.

“I never knew the ‘What?’ chant would stick around as long as it’s stuck around,” said Austin. He later continued, “it can really mess with a guys’ or girls’ rhythm, what they are really trying to say. Sometimes they can get flustered. Sometimes that ‘What?’ chant could really be overwhelming, and you think people aren’t paying attention to what you’re saying, and sometimes on a really strong, heart-felt promo is happening, they’ll start with that ‘What?’ chant.

Austin continued by stating, “The audience is missing out what the wrestler’s saying, so sometimes you gotta time that ‘What?’ chant when there’s some bulls–t going on and you gotta be able to listen to a real deal promo so you know what’s going on in the story. I feel for ya, and I feel for when they’re trying to cut a good promo. It interrupts your rhythm, plain and simple.”

What are your thoughts on this chant? Sound off in the comment section below.

For years now, Steve Austin has been regarded as one of the biggest stars in the history of the sports entertainment company.

If you recall, Austin came up with the line around the time of the Alliance angle and kept using it a few years after that. Even though he doesn’t appear on WWE television as frequently as he used to, the fans kept the chant going.

CM Punk Testifies Today, Confirms What CM Stands For, Motivation For Podcast Comments

19

CM Punk took the stand today as part of his ongoing trial. Dr. Chris Amann is suing Punk for comments he made on his friend Colt Cabana’s podcast regarding the medical care he received while with WWE.

A reporter for the Chicago Tribue, Gregory Pratt, is live at the trial and noted some interesting testimony was given by Punk this morning. His Tweets from the courtroom are below:

https://twitter.com/royalpratt/status/1002604531946082305

Notes From CM Punk Testimony

Punk was asked if there is anything he would change about his comments on the podcast.

“CM Punk took stand mid-morn,” Pratt tweeted. “His attorney asked if there’s anything he’d change about podcast, he said he swore a lot on there and wouldn’t today. Acknowledged being bitter then and wrestling being his whole life. Lots of things on the podcast he just doesn’t care about anymore.”

Pratt also acknowledged that Punk confirmed “CM” stands for Chick Magnet.

“He confirmed “CM” stands for Chick Magnet,” Pratt continued. “Remembers first promo after hitting someone w roll of coins: ‘All’s I’m saying is, I’ve got a lot of cents.’ Amann atty won relevance objection”

https://twitter.com/royalpratt/status/1002603245766889472

“Punk explained his character saying it was heavy on straight edge — no drugs/alcohol subculture — and make no excuses for who you are. When a good guy, focuses on core good guy values, when bad guy, gets a little preachy, like call for cutting off beer sales if he wins match”

https://twitter.com/royalpratt/status/1002603587187376128

The Tribune also noted that lawyers from both sides debated the relevance of showing a video of CM Punk after having been put through a table. Evidently, the attorneys needed to explain to the judge who Kane was.

“There was a lawyer fight between Amann and Punk reps over video of CM Punk laying after going thru table,” Pratt Tweeted. “Amann counsel didn’t want video to show Kane chokeslamming Punk thru table. Judge:’ I don’t know who Kane is.’ Attorney: “The big man without a shirt.”

Report: Saudi Arabian Prince Threatened Over Greatest Royal Rumble

20

The Greatest Royal Rumble was a successful event in many respects, but not everybody was happy with a big pro wrestling show being staged in the Middle East.

The Independent reports that Yamen-based branch of Al-Qaeda has issued a warning to the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, calling his efforts to liberalize the Kingdom as “sinful projects.” The Crown Prince ha been accused of “opening the door wide for corruption and moral degradation” by allowing the WWE and other aspects of western culture into the Middle Eastern country.

They appear to be especially upset with the Greatest Royal Rumble. Below is an excerpt from the statement released by the organization, pointing towards the wrestling event:

“[Foreign] disbelieving wrestlers exposed their privates and on most of them was the sign of the cross, in front of a mixed gathering of young Muslim men and women,”

It’s worth mentioning here that after the success of Greatest Royal Rumble, there were reports of the company holding another similar event in the country in November.

In light of this development, it remains to be seen if WWE’s longterm relationship with Saudi Arabia continues as planned. Neither WWE nor the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have publicly responded to Al-Qaeda’s warning as of this writing.
