Former WWE Star Lands Role In Deadpool 2, Most Memorable NXT Debuts

Former WWE Star Lands Role In Deadpool 2

Former WWE Star Robert Maillet aka Kurrgan landed a small role in the latest film of the Deadpool franchise Deadpool 2. He stayed quiet about it for almost a year and recently spoke to Information Morning Moncton about his part after the release of the film:

“This was a great opportunity, It was crazy for me … I knew Deadpool, the first one, was a huge film, a huge hit, and the second one was the most anticipated film of the year. Plus it’s a Marvel film as well. … It was like a glorified Halloween party. For me the thrill is working with [Ryan Reynolds] … watching him work, being in character, pitching out lines in each take. It’s a huge honor.”

Maillet played the part of “Sluggo” a mutant mercenary, in the film. He was originally signed by WWE back in 1997 and was dubbed as Kurrgan The Interrogator by the company upon his debut.

Most Memorable NXT Debuts

WWE recently posted a video on their YouTube channel, listing the top 5 most memorable in-arena debuts in NXT history. The video features debuts of the likes of Kevin Owens, Aleister Black and more.

The list is topped by the debut of Adam Cole who alongside Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish attacked the then NXT Champion Drew McIntyre during Takeover: Brooklyn III last year and the group later obtained the name The Undisputed Era. The video can be seen below:

Tessa Blanchard Talks Impact Wrestling and Not Signing With WWE

1

In the short time since she has been with Impact Wrestling, Tessa Blanchard is undefeated and could move into the Knockouts title picture shortly. The 22-year-old has competed in WWE and Stardom and is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable faces on Impact’s roster.

Blanchard recently took part in an interview on Busted Open Radio. She talked about the mood backstage in Impact Wrestling as well as details surrounding her 2014 WWE tryout.

Tessa Blanchard on Busted Open Radio

“After my WWE tryout in 2014, I was like ‘alright, I’m getting signed, I’m going to be there, I’m ready, let’s do this’, Blanchard said in regards to her relationship with WWE. “Then when it didn’t happen, I was heartbroken. I honestly think it’s cause God had a plan for me. If I would have gone and they would have signed me, I don’t think I would have had the life experiences or the experiences in wrestling.”

“I wouldn’t be the wrestler I am today,” she continued.

The daughter of Tully Blanchard and step-daughter of Magnum TA also had this to say regarding the Impact Wrestling roster and mood backstage:

“At first I was a little nervous,” Blanchard said. “I didn’t really know what to expect. TV style is very new to me still. But the locker room and everyone has been so welcoming there and it’s just a very good environment there. Everyone wants the best for each other. I haven’t run into any problems where it’s like people talking about other people or saying one thing and turning around and saying a different thing. It feels just like good vibes there, like good energy. Everyone really, really wants the best for each other.”

Blanchard also credited Gail Kim, Petey Williams, and Jimmy Jacobs as creative minds backstage in Impact. She will take on Madison Rayne this Thursday on Impact’s branded episode “Under Pressure”.

Io Shirai Headed To WWE

2

According to Japanese media outlet, Tokyo Sports, Io Shirai is headed to WWE.

There had been reports last year that Shirai was WWE bound as well but the 27-year-old’s offer was rescinded after she failed a company medical. Shirai was found to have an injured neck and ended up returning to Stardom.

It appears WWE once again has a contract offer on the table for Shirai. It’s not clear if WWE has taken a second look at her medical records or not at this point, however.

Io Shirai

Tokyo Sports is reporting that Shirai’s last match for Stardom will be June 23rd, 2018. The media outlet notes that Stardom’s advertising for their July shows does not feature a picture of Shirai.

Shirai lost her “Wonder of Stardom” championship last week, spurring rumors she was leaving the company. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported the title change had always been in the works, however, and likely had nothing to do with Shirai leaving. The Observer also reported that WWE has made offers to several other talents from Stardom likely for the upcoming Mae Young Class tournament this summer. Stardom’s Toni Storm also recently signed with WWE as part of the UK division.

Shirai is one of the most talented and respected female athletes in all of Japan. She has won Tokyo Sports’ “Joshi Puroresu Grand Prize” award a record 3 straight times. Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranked her #6 in their Top-50 countdown of female wrestlers in 2017.

Roman Reigns Responds To Story Claiming He Told A Little Girl To ‘Get Lost’

13

Being a famous person means that you are never truly alone and doesn’t matter whatever you do or wherever you go, fans are always following you, even when they probably shouldn’t.

It sometimes becomes frustrating enough that the celebrity ends up having a breakdown and saying something harsh. This usually erupts in a controversy and it appears that Roman Reigns has found himself in middle of one.

A story has recently been making rounds on social media saying that a young girl wanted to take a picture with the Big Dog but the former World Champion told her to ‘get lost’.

After it became viral, Roman was forced to reply to these allegations and sharing his side of the story on Twitter, Reigns said it was actually a grown man who approached him while he was enjoying some time with his family:

The moment in which this incident took place is in the past and we’ll probably never know who is speaking the truth.

The only thing that can be said is that in any such situation both the sides should act maturely and while celebrities should be kind to their followers, people should also not disturb them in their private time.

Roman Reigns is currently scheduled to face Jinder Mahal at the upcoming Money In The Bank PPV.

Possible Reason Behind Recent Surprise NXT Appearances From Main Roster Stars

11

A number of main roster stars have made a surprise appearance on various NXT shows in the past couple of weeks and it has left people with many questions.

At first, it was believed that these stars are just having fun in their time off after the busy travel schedule in the last couple of months, though now it appears that their appearances are part of a plan from the company.

According to a report from CageSideSeats, WWE is specifically sending stars who are not being used on the main roster currently in hopes to boost the ticket sales for these events.

This is an interesting news as it most likely means that the surprise appearances won’t end just here and we can expect some more main roster stars to show up at NXT shows in upcoming time.

For those who don’t know, it all started with ‘The Revival’ Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder making a surprise appearance during a house show where they answered a challenge issued by the Undisputed Era.

Since then, stars like Tyler Breeze and Tye Dillinger have returned to the developmental territory for appearances and even Booker T and Bruce Prichard showed up during an event earlier this month.

If these reports are true then it would be interesting to see which other main roster stars appear for the third brand of the company in future and if they end up working there frequently.

Future of 205 Live; AJ Lee’s Status With The WWE

5

205 Live Safe On The WWE Network

WWE is gearing up for the second annual UK Championship tournament, which has led to some speculation about the state of the 205 Live show. Some fans have been wondering if the UK series will replace 205 Live on the WWE Network, but that’s not the case.

Triple H recently stated that viewership for 205 Live has actually been up lately. The show has been stabilized after a rocky time surrounding Enzo Amore’s departure. Following the introduction of Drake Maverick as 205 Live GM and an overhauled approach to the show’s presentation, the show is in better shape than it has been and will continue for the foreseeable future.

AJ Lee Not Returning To WWE Any Time Soon

There was also a rumor on if the Second-Longest Divas Champion, AJ Lee were to return back to the WWE due to the new Fox television deal. Mike Johnson of PWInsdier recently addressed her status:

“They aren’t going to plan that far out in advance. It’s just not how this business works. AJ Lee mentioned in her book that she chose to get out of the ring due to physical issues. It was not an issue with CM Punk and WWE although she probably felt like the child in the middle of a divorce at that point. She was already planning the next stage of her life, beyond professional wrestling. I don’t see her ever coming back.”

Enzo Amore To Break His Silence Tomorrow

7

Eric Ardnt (formerly Enzo Amore in the WWE) is to break his silence tomorrow on Memorial Day.

Back in January, Enzo was accused of sexual assault from a woman that occurred around October 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was released from the WWE due to his failure to inform the company about the investigation. Enzo would deny these allegations and would go silent on social media for some time. It wouldn’t be until this month that the police of Phoenix, Arizona would drop the investigation due to insignificant evidence.

It’s going to be interesting to see what Enzo will say now that he’s a free man and what’s to come for the realest guy in the room.

Stay tuned for more news regarding Enzo’s announcement.

Shinsuke Nakamura Brilliantly Trolls Fan With Autograph

6

Shinsuke Nakamura is having fun with being a heel in the WWE.

WWE Champion AJ Styles and Nakamura have wrestled each other four times over the last month. Styles successfully retained the title against Nakamura at WrestleMania 34, they went to a double count-out at both the Greatest Royal Rumble and Backlash events. Nakamura did beat Styles in a non-title match on a recent episode of SmackDown Live.

The sports entertainment company has booked them in yet another match. Nakamura will challenge Styles for the WWE Title in a Last Man Standing match at the upcoming Money in the Bank PPV.

One wrestling fan (@aj_autograph) posted on Twitter earlier this week that he met Nakamura at a signing event. He also shared photos of his WWE Pop! Vinyl figure signed by the lead heel on the blue brand. The funny part is the fact that Nakamura scribbled the words “no speak English”, before signing the side.

Lio Rush Comments On Heat From Emma Tweet

4

23-year-old NXT Superstar, Lio Rush, earned some criticism last year following the release of Australian Superstar, Emma, AKA Tenille Dashwood.

Emma had lost two consecutive losses in a row to Asuka before being released last October. Rush took to Twitter and offered an ill-timed comment on her release:

“I guess these are the things that happen when you’re not TRULY ready for @WWEAsuka” his Tweet read.

Several WWE Superstars were critical of his comments. Peyton Royce and Bray Wyatt both publicly responded to him.

Lio Rush Comments On Learning From Mistake

Rush spoke with ESPN recently about how the backlash to his comment affected him.

“It was definitely a difficult situation,” he said. “I’ve worked so hard and spent years trying to brand myself and to show the world that Lio Rush is a top prospect in the professional wrestling world. So it was a bit rough to see so many people turn on me for that, but I’ve owned up to my mistakes.

“I have said my apologies. What else can you do? You live, you make mistakes and you learn,” Rush continued. “I know a big thing that I tweeted out shortly after that — ‘a mistake shouldn’t be your attacker, it should be your teacher.’ I’ve definitely learned from that situation. I definitely have not let that situation change the pacing of me succeeding in anything.”

Rush competes mainly on the NXT live tour. So far, he’s only appeared on NXT programming twice. He’s lost to Lars Sullivan and the Velveteen Dream.

William Regal stated the following in regard to Rush’s comments about Emma last year:

“We all make mistakes. All the people who’ve had “heat” or problems, have I ever joined in with the pack on you? Perhaps a chat and a bit of guidance would be better. Being a Pro comes in many ways in and out of the ring.”

Scott Hall Invaded WCW 22 Years Ago Today

4

Scott Hall invaded WCW Nitro on May 27th, 1996. His appearance kicked off one of the most significant angles in wrestling history.

Former WCW President, Eric Bischoff, commented on the famous angle during his “83 Weeks” podcast recently.

“It’s hard for me to create a timeline that occurred 20 years ago, especially with the angle of the nWo,” Bischoff said.  “When I knew Scott Hall was coming in, probably a couple of weeks before he was due to arrive, at least in my mind, from what I remember now, that is when the idea started to form in my head. I knew that I wanted to do this reality-based angle.”

“I wanted to do this storyline where the audience didn’t know whether or not the story was real or it was scripted. Scott and Kevin worked with WCW previously. Scott and Kevin both felt that WCW didn’t treat them well, and that they weren’t being treated as stars, etc. We have heard it all before. They went to WWF and became bigger stars, or big stars in WWF. Storyline-wise it became apparent to me that it was a perfect catalyst of these two guys that used to work here and got pissed off, they left, became big stars and then came back to exact revenge. That was the premise of the nWo storyline.”

Don Callis On Impact Wrestling: “The Brand Has Not Been Cool”

2

Since Anthem announced the new Impact Wrestling management team late last year, the promotion has set out to improve their image.

Scott D’Amore, Don Callis, and Ed Nordholm have now run two sets of TV tapings, a pay-per-view, and several live events since taking over the helm. While ratings and fan response have both seen moderate improvement in the last few months, the bookers know it will be an uphill battle to erase some of the promotion’s past in the minds of wrestling fans.

The three members of Impact’s management team took part in an interview with Pro Wrestling Illustrated recently.

Don Callis on Re-Building Impact Wrestling

“The brand has not been cool,” Callis stated to PWI. “And we all know that if we create a great product with compelling storylines and excellent talent, and we have an open environment, working collaboratively with talent and with other promotions, we all of a sudden are breaking paradigms of the wrestling business. That will then make us cool and give us a buzz.”

Callis can also be heard on his weekly podcast, “Killin the Town w/ Storm and Cyrus”, giving his theories on wrestling booking. This week, Callis discussed how he is not in favor of scripted promos for wrestlers as he believes few wrestlers are good enough actors to pull this off.

“It’s going to be destination programming,” he said of his plans for Impact. “And we’re not going to have to ask for it. I just think we’re going to get it. And that may sound a bit brash, if I have my executive hat on. But if I and Scott and Ed and the team did not believe we could be the best, then we have no business in this position.”

Impact Wrestling features a branded show this Thursday night. Austin Aries challenges Pentagon Jr. for the Impact World Championship at “Under Pressure”.

Mickie James Talks About Her Wrestling and Music Career; Enzo Amore Still Teasing Announcement

0

Mickie James Talks About Her Wrestling and Music Career

WWE Superstar Mickie James was recently interviewed by Fredericksburg.com where she talked about her love for both music and pro-wrestling.

“I’ve always wanted to sing so badly, but I didn’t think it was something that was possible for me. Plus I didn’t think I was good at it. … It was: ‘Do I want music or do I want wrestling?’ I wanted both. I’m good at wrestling and I love it with all my heart. I’ve devoted so much of my life and career to it that I wasn’t ready to let it go. I didn’t want to let music go either because I felt like it allowed me to express a different side of me that people don’t know. Music is so soulful and you’re a bit more vulnerable.”

Enzo Amore Still Teasing Announcement

As noted before, Enzo Amore is going to reveal his future plans in an announcement on Monday and has been teasing it since the past week. Amore is continuing to tease his announcement on Twitter where he will be “breaking” his “social media silence” at the Times Square.

All In to Feature a Title v Title Match?

1

The Cody Rhodes and Young Bucks’ self-funded “All In” event which sold out in 30 minutes is going to be the biggest show in the independent wrestling scene. Fans of wrestling are looking forward to the event which will take place at September 1. Major names from the wrestling world have been confirmed for the show, but only one big match has been announced and we don’t have a full match card yet.

At the Ring of Honor: United show in London, Cody Rhodes was interrupted by the current NWA World Champion, Nick Aldis. Both of them are set to face each other at All In, but Aldis wanted plans to change a little.

Cody is going to challenge the Ring of Honor World Champion Dalton Castle for his title at ROH Best in the World next month. Aldis wants his match with Cody to be a title for title match if Cody wins the ROH World Championship.

Cody agreed to Aldis’ stipulation of the match and looks like it will be a title for title match at All In if Cody is able to win the ROH World Championship from Dalton Castle.

Jerry Lawler Takes Shot at WWE Critics

10

WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler talked about fans criticizing WWE’s product online on a recent episode of his podcast, Dinner with the King.

According to Lawler, the vast majority of the fans don’t complain about WWE. It is a small amount of vocal people online who “have nothing better to do” and “need to get a life”:

“Everybody does not complain about the current product. It’s not the vast majority either. It’s a small amount of people, a very select few that probably have nothing better to do than live their life on social media and that is really sad; but, those are the people that complain. If you’ve got nothing better to do in your life than spend time, sitting down and typing something out on your phone and getting on social media to complain about a wrestling show, man, you really do need to get a life. To all of those naysayers there, you’ve got to eat your words because whatever they’re doing is definitely working. You can’t knock success, so there you go.”

Rumored Finish For Styles v Nakamura at MITB

9

‘The King of Strong Style’ has been indeed very strong with his style of wrestling as of late, with AJ Styles receiving devastating low blows from him over the last two months. Even Styles had to retaliate back with the illegal attack to give Nakamura a taste of his own medicine.

Their most recent title bout at WWE Backlash in a no-disqualification match saw Nakamura delivering a low blow on Styles, only for Styles to return the favor. The match ended with both of them simultaneously hitting each other with a groin attack, only to be unable to answer the referee’s count of ten.

The WWE Universe is wondering what is in store in the Last Man Standing Match that’s going to take place at Money in the Bank. According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the rumored ending of the match is going to take almost the same path with both Styles and Nakamura hitting each other with a low blow, but with a twist of Styles wearing a protective cup and getting a win.

AJ Styles is set to defend his WWE Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura in a Last Man Standing Match at Money in the Bank on June 17th.

Stacy Keibler Pregnant With Her Second Child

3

Former WWE star Stacy Keibler is expecting her second child with her husband, Jared Pobre.

US Weekly confirmed the 38-year-old as pregnant after she was photographed in Beverly Hills, California with her baby bump on display.

Two months after breaking up with actor George Clooney in July 2013, Keibler began dating Pobre, a tech entrepreneur. They got married on March 8, 2014, in a surprise beach ceremony in Mexico. The wedding was a surprise to their respective families since they were on vacation.

Keibler and Pobre welcomed their first child, daughter Ava Grace, now three years old, on August 20, 2014.

Since becoming a mother, Keibler has maintained a very low profile. She stopped acting and is rarely photographed in public. She also shut down her lifestyle website (at StacyKeibler.com) and abandoned social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).

Her last post on Facebook was made on March 25, 2017, in which she encouraged people to “turn off your lights tonight at 8:30 & help us to a better future!” in honor of Earth Hour. That same status update was posted to her Twitter account, which was also her last tweet.

Keibler has not updated her Instagram account since September 2015. The last post she shared on the social media platform was of herself reading a book titled “What Does It Mean to Be Kind?” to her daughter.

https://www.instagram.com/p/8EQvsEpUxF/

Four months after giving birth to her first daughter, Keibler revealed that she never thought about marriage or parenthood until she began dating Pobre.

“Life can be unpredictable. You feel one way, and then … boom!” Keibler wrote on her lifestyle website. “You need to entirely change your perspective. That is certainly what happened to me this past year. Until I started dating Jared, the idea of being married and having a family was never on my radar. I was just hoping that the right love would find me.

“But after a serendipitous reconnection with Jared, a friend who turned out to be my soulmate, we created a family together almost instantly. Talk about a serious change in my reality! This year and the holiday season especially has me feeling so nostalgic about family — my family, my new family, and of course, the newest addition to our family. Ava has graced us with such joy, such light and such love–we never saw it coming. She is our special little lady, and I couldn’t be more thankful for how she has opened my heart.”

The Miz Sends Motivational Speech to Champions League Finalists (Video), WrestleMania Being Considered for Free TV?

15

Former WWE and Intercontinental Champion The Miz recently sat down with the UK’s ‘Sporf’ online channel and he recorded a motivational speech for football team Liverpool ahead of their Champions League final against Real Madrid tonight.

You can check the clip via the tweet below:

https://twitter.com/Sporf/status/1000329317111533568

Wrestlingnewsco have reported that “at least 1 TV network is interested in bidding for WrestleMania rights” in the United States. This coincides with the news that WWE have recently signed a massive $1 Billion dollar deal with FOX to take the programme there in 2019.

The idea of taking WrestleMania to free television could potentially give the show a ‘Superbowl’ like feel, the biggest game in the NFL calendar makes more than $1 Billion in TV rights and even just a fraction of that potential sum would be leaps and bounds ahead of what WWE would generate via Network subscriptions and PPV providers. The interested party have not yet been revealed and it appears as though this scenario is nowhere near coming to fruition anytime soon.

Could you see WrestleMania heading to television? Let us know in the comments.

Former Premier League Player to Wrestle for Knight Family Promotion

0

World Association of Wrestling (WAW) has announced that former Premier League football (soccer) player Grant Holt will be swapping his studded boots for wrestling boots and entering the squared circle for the very first time.

The 37 year old who previously played for the likes of Aston Villa and Norwich still plays professionally for National League side Barrow, he will be teaming with Roy and Zak Knight (the UK Hooligans) at FightMare 3 in 2019.

This has been an incredibly successful move for the WAW promotion as the mainstream media attention has been rolling over the past few days with the BBC, Independent, Fox Sports, Sky Sports and more featuring the brand heavily whilst focusing on Holt.

When asked about his upcoming move to wrestling Holt stated “If I want to do something, I do it properly. I love a challenge. It’s going to be great, a big show next year in June, which will be fantastic, so I’m really looking forward to it. Everyone knows how big it [wrestling] is in America but there’s a lot of stuff going on in the UK and I just don’t think it gets enough press. Hopefully, off the back of this, it will.

Opinion: If someone wants to let Grant know that PROGRESS are running Wembley in September that would be great.

The MLW Fusion Report: May 25, 2018

2

It’s finally here. After five weeks of anticipation, Pentagon, Jr. is challenging Shane “Swerve” Strickland for the MLW World Heavyweight Championship. It’s the first MLW title defense and I hope both men deliver.

Watch this week’s episiode of Fusion right here!

The show opens with Swerve and Barrington Hughes rolling up to the arena in an expensive red convertible. Strickland gets out and is flanked by reporters and photographers. Salina de la Renta approaches him and says that his car and his title are both rentals. She walks as Hughes calls her a “broomstick,” which he explains means she’s a “witch.” Swerve is about to say that she’s more like a “bitch,” but he gets cut off by the opening title card. That was pretty funny.

Tony Schiavone and Rich Bocchini welcome us and hype the big title match.

Santana Garrett vs. Chelsea Green

Winner: Santana Garrett with a jumping DDT

Thoughts and Highlights

  • I believe this is the first women’s match on Fusion.
  • These two started off as friends and then Green slapped Garrett, which turned the match into more of a stiffer brawl.
  • After the slap, Green went into crazy woman mode, smearing her lipstick all over her mouth.
  • One interesting move by Green was when she had Garrett on her knees and held her arms back. Then, she pushed Garrett into the middle turnbuckle with her foot a few times. Garrett hit the turnbuckle like someone hitting their face into a car dashboard during a sudden stop because they weren’t wearing a seatbelt.
  • One awkward spot in the match was towards the end where Garrett went for a kick. Green dodged it. Garrett just turned her back on Green like she was just waiting for the next move to happen, which ended up being a lungblower. I guess Green should have gotten the move off quicker but it made Garrett look like a dope for just standing there.
  • The two hugged after the match. I thought Green was going to turn but she turned off the crazy once the bell rang. Not a bad match.

We get a recap of Team Filthy’s beatdown on Jimmy Havoc followed by a promo from Lawlor. He apologizes for the beating and for the fact that Havoc can’t take a “vicious punch.” He mocks Havoc for being in British, saying that he’s probably in “London town” drinking tea and eating crumpets. After listening to some of Havoc’s promos, I think he likes to drink blood with his crumpets instead. Lawlor finishes by saying that Havoc can’t take him in the ring and he apologizes for that, too. Lawlor wasn’t the smoothest in this promo but he came across as an arrogant d—, which he’s pretty good at.

Simon Gotch Prize Fight Challenge

Winner: Simon Gotch (Duh- it’s his open challenge)

Thoughts and Highlights

  • The “prize” in this open challenge is $250. What a cheap bastard.
  • The first man to accept the open challenge was Danny Santiago. I was wondering if this guy was a jobber and he was. Three things confirmed this:
  1. He didn’t even get his name displayed on the chyron.
  2. He was wearing a white belt, which is the lowest level in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (I have to credit Bing with helping me on that one).
  3. When he took off his jacket, his physique was…well…let’s just say unimpressive.
  • Gotch won after a T-bone suplex and a Gotch piledriver.
  • Gotch reached into the bag holding the money and pulled out an even smaller bag containing the $250. He waved it in Santiago’s face.

Kaci Lennox is outside Martin J. Friedman’s dressing room door, where she’s waiting for him to arrive. All of a sudden, Aria Blake and Joey Janela walk out of Friedman’s room. Janela is smoking a cigarette and drinking a Corona. Lennox asks why they were in there and Janela just says they weren’t doing anything bad.

After a commercial, Friedman arrives at his dressing room. Lennox is about to interview him when he smells smoke. He walks into his dressing room and it’s trashed. Cigarette ashes are all over his $3,000 shirt, there’s domestic beer cans all over the place, and there’s a condom on the floor (which was blurred out). Friedman is incensed and storms out of the room.

MLW World Heavyweight Championship Match: Shane “Swerve” Strickland (champion) vs. Pentagon, Jr. w/Salina de la Renta

We’re less than thirty minutes in and it’s time for the main event. A video package plays showing the events leading up to this match, including Pentagon’s mind games and the red mist attack from two weeks ago. We get a tale of the tape before heading out to the arena for the entrances. Pentagon is out first and spits his red mist at the top of the aisle. I hope he has enough left over to use for the match.

A mariachi band comes into the ring and plays the Mexican national anthem. The crowd was respectful for the most part. Nobody booed and nobody chanted “U.S.A.” while it was going on. In fact, they applauded after it was over. The whole crowd reaction was very 2018. If this were 1988, garbage would have been thrown in the ring and Jesse Ventura would have been talking about “Chico” Santana’s tacos.

Pentagon had the “Cero Miedo” hand sign over his heart during the anthem. Nice touch.

Swerve comes out next and I think there’s definitely some crowd sweetening. Some of the cheering just didn’t sound like it was live.

Winner: Shane “Swerve” Strickland after the Swerve Stomp

Thoughts and Highlights

  • This was a slower paced match but it wasn’t boring.
  • At one point, Pentagon tied Swerve’s hands to the middle rope using audio cables and began chopping him. The ref was admonishing Pentagon for this but then just kind of let Pentagon do his thing.
  • Bocchini compared Swerve to a “young Jon Jones.” Let’s just hope Swerve’s career doesn’t take a left turn at cocaine use and hit and run accidents.
  • The pace started picking up when both men booted each other in the face. The ref began a double 20 count as they lay on the mat and the show went to commercial. That was kind of a weird spot to give Blue Moon their ad time.
  • Pentagon hit a Canadian Destroyer on the apron. I thought for a second that we were going to get a countout finish but thankfully Pentagon got Swerve back in the ring.
  • Towards the end of the match, Pentagon brought a chair into the ring. I don’t like when heels bring foreign objects like chairs or title belts into the ring right in front of the ref’s eyes, especially if they’re the ones challenging for the title. Why would you get yourself intentionally disqualified? It makes “cero” sense.
  • Before the Swerve Stomp, Pentagon attempted to spit red mist into Swerve’s face, but Swerve ducked and de la Renta ended up getting the spicy spit in her face instead. Now, whereas Swerve reacted like he was going blind when the mist ended up in his face two weeks back, de la Renta just looked annoyed and acted like someone had spilt cranberry juice on her nice white clothes. She didn’t even look like her sight was affected in any way. It made Swerve look like an overreacting wuss.

After the show goes off the air, we get a commercial for next week’s episode, where former WWE superstars Rich Swann and Jake Hager (Jack Swagger) will make their MLW debuts. We’ll also see Jeff Cobb (Matanza Cueto) on Fusion for the first time as he takes on Hager.

Final Thoughts

  • I really dug this week’s episode. The comedy on the show was just the right amount and it didn’t feel forced. When I watch Raw or Smackdown, I think to myself that the comedy on those shows feels contrived, like Vince McMahon has a comedy quota that needs to be filled in each episode. The funny spots on this show were quick and didn’t overstay their welcome.
  • I’m happy to see Simon Gotch featured in MLW. Not every guy’s career works out in WWE but he’s talented and I’m glad to see him spotlighted. His membership in Team Filthy and the open challenge gimmick are going to help him get over.
  • I loved the segment with Friedman in the dressing room and can’t wait to see a Friedman/Janela feud play out. It seems natural- the refined one percenter vs. the sloppy degenerate.
  • I was more impressed with Swerve this week than in his match with Jimmy Havoc.
  • Rich Bocchini is irritating and comes off as a dunce to me. When Schiavone questioned why Pentagon would bring a chair into the ring, Bocchini’s response was “You have to use that chair to make it illegal.” DUH. That’s the whole reason why Schiavone was questioning it.

The Shield will always live in the minds and hearts of the WWE Universe.

When the group first made their way onto WWE television, they were an instant hit with the fans. From the way that they looked to how they worked in the ring to their promos.

They got over big time with the fans, which is something that a group had not done in years. Stables will be created from time to time but not have the success that acts like The Four Horsemen, DX, NWO and other classic groups had.

The Shield, who featured Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Roman Reigns, was a different kind of stable that was created with NXT Superstars.

WWE will be releasing “The Shield: Justice for All” DVD that will feature three discs in July. Disc 1 focuses on Dean Ambrose, Disc 2 on Seth Rollins and Disc 3 on Roman Reigns. Courtesy of Wrestling DVD Network, here is the content listing:
