Detailed Review Of ESPN’s “E:60 — Behind The Curtain” NXT Documentary

7

WWE premiered their new ESPN E:60 “Behind The Curtain” documentary, which provides an all-access, behind-the-scenes look at the company’s developmental territory in NXT. Below is a detailed recap of the special courtesy of Jeremy Peoples and F4WOnline.com.

WWE and ESPN have teamed up for their first documentary feature – focusing on NXT. The show begins on April 23, 2015 with Adam Rose with his son. He wishes he had more time for him, and he sets up a feeding tube or port of some kind on him. Two years before, HHH came into an NXT classroom and said that some of them will make it, but most won’t. The show intro focuses on characters – including Undertaker, The Rock, Stone Cold, and Hulk Hogan. Adam Rose says everything you know is about to change, while Xavier talks about still being pretty.

HHH tells the class that it takes a lot of work to make it in WWE. The narrator talks about HHH’s corporate role and treats him like a retired ex-wrestler. Ray Leppan is shown and he says that everything he does is for his son. Austin Watson’s shown and Matt Polinsky (Corey Graves) says he’s torn his MCLs and suffered concussions, but hopes he hasn’t had had anything that alters his life. The narrator says that WWE Network is where they’re performing, and they’re trying to fight to get to cable. Well, that’s accurate now – it wasn’t accurate for when this was initially shot.

The interviewer meets with Vince, who tells him that he’s clearly overwhelmed being in a room with Vince. HHH talks to Bray Wyatt about his intro a bit – they go over the best way to use the lantern. The opening of the Performance Center is shown and we get a bit of training with Neville and Big Cass. The Ascension is shown briefly, and then we get a bit of an Ascension training tag team match. Leppan is shown in his Leo Kruger persona and he had a rough life. He slept in abandoned buildings and fought on the streets as a teenager. The thought of being a pro wrestler got him out of that life. As Z-Max, he made a small name for himself before signing with WWE.

A bit of FCW footage is shown and we see his wife Cassandra and hear about their history. Leppan and Bo Dallas chat a bit backstage and we hear about Ray’s son. At 17 weeks, they found out something was wrong – he had an abdominal defect. His liver and intestines were in a sack outside of his body, and he may not make it. Ray plays with his son, who has outlived his prognosis at three years of age already. They talk about how he’s fed with a feeding tube and Leppan says he’s out to make a better future for his family. “After four years in NXT, that future is on the ropes”.

Back at the Performance Center, Regal works with him in the ring. He’s been learning for four years and DeMott tells him that it’s better to do it 20 times here and get it right once later. At an NXT meeting, HHH says he’s a good guy, and being a bad guy isn’t in him yet. Michael Hayes says he’s a mechanic, but he’s not different. DeMott says that on the road, he is different. HHH says let’s turn him face and see what happens.

Xavier Woods is shown with a wacky blue suit and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle backpack full of pogs and a Skip It. He runs into the room and gets a laugh out of everyone with a horse mask. He wanted to be a wrestler, so he took acting classes and became a cheerleader in college. We see him as Consequences Creed with a TNA promo photo, Xavier Shango, and finally, Xavier Woods. His educational history is shown and Watson says he wants to be the only wrestler with a PhD, who also got it while wrestling. HHH says that other than height, he has everything. Terry Taylor says he has a great attitude. Dusty says he shouldn’t be in NXT. HHH says that it’s not a fish or cut bait issue, he’s creative, but he needs to try one thing and stick with it for a bit. Cole tells him that as a PhD, he can be a great guy to talk for the company.

Matt Polinsky says he always gave himself full sleeves of tattoos in video games. He’s been wrestling since 14, and loved it since he was three. He wrestled as a freshman in high school and he was called Sterling Keenan. In 2009, he worked as a bouncer and met his future wife, Amanda. They got married later that year and he was hired by WWE in 2011. Polinsky says his character is him with the volume turned up – and he gets to work and do things you can’t do in real life. It’s like being James Bond.

He’s home due to a series of concussions, and now he has two kids to support. His wife says she’s worried about his career longevity. She worried about every call she gets from him in the middle of the day, and he says it’s all he knows. We come back from a break with him cutting a promo on the Wyatt Family. Polinsky says that he hopes his story is the one that inspires people to never quit.

HHH says in a meeting saying that Corey’s cleared and he’s ready to go. Dusty says they can pull it off with him and Hayes says he loves the tattoos with a suit. We get handheld camera footage of training and are told he suffered another concussion. Polinsky says he’s had a bunch of concussions, so he’s not really sure of the timeline. Vince says that you’re on the shelf until you’re on the shelf, and he says they’re way ahead of the curve when it comes to concussions, and were far ahead of the NFL. Vince says he’s had a lot of concussions.

The interviewer talks about the wellness policy and Vince says that there’s no off-season and they have an in-depth wellness policy. The company invests in characters and the people behind them – it makes for a healthy environment. “These guys are clean? Yes, we’re far past that now”. Polinsky’s wife talks about her son making a card saying he’s his hero because he’s a wrestler, and she told him to not give his father that because of his health. Polinsky gets “some news” before a break.

He says if he’s released, it would be the worst news of his life. It’s September of 2014, and he hasn’t wrestled in nine months. HHH told him that he’s medically-disqualified for working as a wrestler due to his concussion history. Cole says you think you’ll get a big paycheck, and then this happens. He’s a family man, and it led to his wife going back to work as a teacher – they knew he was just hired as a wrestler. In December, HHH talks to Polinsky about his future and gives him a two year deal as an announcer.

Polinsky says that things didn’t work out as he planned – but he’s still working in the business he loves, and he can do this for a long time. He calls his wife and tells her about him getting an announcer’s contract. She’s overjoyed, and he tells her they have to move to Orlando now. For Austin Watson, things have changed.

He was called up to the main roster on November of 2013, and it’s his WWE TV debut. Vince says that he might be too goofy, and what works on NXT may not work on a longer form. Road Dogg tells him this is the big time. We see his initial debut using Brodus’s gimmick and beating Slater. HHH says the setup was great, but he needs to slow it down a bit. Watson says it feels great to have HHH’s seal of approval. We go back to Ray Leppan, who feels that time is running out. He’s thinking about failure, but knows he can’t.

We return to Full Sail with Leppan talking about the last few months being very intense. He says the goal now is to find the thing that takes him to the next level. HHH says that Leo Kruger is missing something. Bill says Ray’s an elder statesman, so they told him he had to reinvent himself, and he panicked. Leppan wrote down ten characters and ten bios, with one being like Indiana Jones and the other being Adam Rose. He’s basically Russell Brand, and we see the tryout of the gimmick in NXT.

Leppan explains that the character is about life being epic, and the party following him. Dusty says it’s outrageous – they’ll either throw him out or keep him in. DeMott says Ray is worried about everything but what he should be – doing his job. Ray’s wife says that they’re worried because they have a child and another on the way, and Ray says he’ll do what it takes to help them. DeMott says there isn’t enough in Leppan for Rose to work – tomorrow’s it for him.

HHH runs through Rose’s intro a bit and says it’s a big moment for Leppan. HHH says it’s a big risk for one night, but they’ll know if it works right away. Adam Rose’s intro gets a “that was awesome!” chant and he wins his debut. He gets a standing ovation in the back and hugs DeMott. HHH says no one said Leo Kruger once, and he came over the hill in one night. DeMott and Leppan share a big hug and DeMott tells him to finally get a good night’s sleep. He said he needed it, as did his family.

DeMott says he isn’t sure how far it will go, but tonight, he made it. We see him promoted to the main roster and the theme from “The Wrestler” by Bruce Springsteen plays. Watson is on the main roster and plans to finish his PhD in 2016. Poinsky and his wife had their third child and he has his own WWE Network show. Bill DeMott left due to NXT allegations, and NXT has promoted 21 wrestlers to the main roster. After the credits, Vince says he’s the greatest character he’s ever made – and then quickly takes it back with a laugh.

This was the kind of thing that WWE 24 wishes it was. It gave you a glimpse into the people behind the characters, and did so within a few minutes for each – so WWE 24 “only” having half an hour to work with isn’t an excuse. There was a bit of WWE whitewashing for some things like the drug testing and implied success of NXT as a main roster feeder system, but a bit less than usual. In the end, it got talent over, and you were left rooting for Corey Graves and Adam Rose to do as well as possible over the long haul because they came off so well.

Seth Rollins Hypes Payback Main Event, Says Kane Is Jealous Of Him

11

WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins was Michael Cole’s guest for this week’s WWE.com sit-down interview.

– Rollins say it’s no secret that the odds are stacked against at Payback, but he’s used to that by now. Rollins ran down his WWE career achievements and said he almost forced Ambrose and Orton into retirement already. He called his WWE Championship win was the greatest moment in WrestleMania history and he likes when the odds are stacked against him.

– Cole asked Rollins about his ongoing issues with Kane. Rollins doesn’t have a personal issue with Kane. His actions may be misguided, but that’s driven by jealousy. Rollins says he can do things in the ring that Kane only dreams of. He’s the hottest thing in WWE and Kane is in the home stretch of his career.

– Cole asks if there will be chaos in the Fatal 4 Way contract signing on SmackDown. Rollins says this is a completely different setting from what happened don RAW and he doesn’t conduct himself in a volatile nature in that type of setting. Rollins says it doesn’t matter what happens on Thursday or leading up to Payback because he will leave with the WWE World Heavyweight Title and The Authority will come out on top.

Update On Sami Zayn’s Shoulder Injury

27

NXT star Sami Zayn made his singles debut on Monday’s RAW, answering John Cena’s US Title Open Challenge but coming up short in an exciting and competitive match. Zayn injured his shoulder prior to the match while standing on the ring steps and waving his warms to get the crowd hyped.

Zayn, who was out of action with a shoulder injury in March and April, is believed to have injured his rotator cuff on RAW. There’s no confirmation yet if he tore it, but WWE should post an update soon.

Zayn is scheduled to challenge WWE NXT champion Kevin Owens at the next NXT Takeover special on May 20th.

Chris Jericho Confirms He Is Returning To WWE This Summer

Chris Jericho announced on his Talk Is Jericho podcast that he is returning to WWE this summer to work 19 live events in June, July and August.

Jericho noted that once again, he will only be working live events and is not scheduled to work any TV or PPV shows. He teased that a TV return is possible, but he’ll be touring with Fozzy this summer and plans on taking his family on vacation, so his schedule is still limited.

Jericho said he is very excited to return to WWE and work with some of the younger talent. He said he pretty much already knows who he’s going to be working with and will be revealing that soon.

Jericho also revealed that due to how busy he is, there won’t be another live WWE Network podcast for a while.

Jim Ross Blog: Lana The New Sable?, Sami Zayn/RAW, The New Day & More

10

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross updated his official website blog on Tuesday afternoon, posting a number of thoughts on Monday’s edition of WWE RAW. Below are some highlights.

On Dean Ambrose: “I like the fact that Dean Ambrose returns to more relevancy as he’s now in the main event of Payback along with Seth Rollins, Randy Orton and Roman Reigns in a WWE Title bout that will feature the three former members of The Shield which speaks well to the productivity of WWE NXT. I’d love to see this be an elimination rules four way but it’s likely to be a traditional Fatal Four Way where the first man to score a pin or submission is declared the winner which means that the WWE Title holder has no championship advantage and cannot retain the title via disqualification or count out. These bouts can be feast or famine but have the potential to provide adequate drama in the expected Payback show closer.”

On The New Day: “Hopeful that New Day really studies some of the great wresting villain groups IE the Freebirds and others to ?begin to acquire the traits that will propel them to the next level. Opportunity is here for these three and with out of ring preparation and study they can become much more valuable to WWE as they are already easy to dislike which bodes well for antagonists. I’m much more encouraged by their current positioning than them being fan favorites but they n eed to learn a variety of villain nuances.”

On Lana’s rumored push: “Curious to see how this Lana/Rusev business plays out. Lana has ‘it’ and may end up being a bigger star than Rusev as stranger things have happened….see Sable and Marc Mero. I still like Rusev’s upside no matter his present creative role.”

On Bret Hart and Sami Zayn: “Thought the utilization of Bret Hart in Montreal was spot on as he gave Sami Zayn a magnificent “rub.” Zayn and John Cena had an excellent presentation that the fans genuinely cared about and it seemingly suspended the audience’s disbelief and the fans emotionally invested in their home towner who made his RAW debut. It played well on TV. Good booking.”

JTG Releasing First Tell-All Autobiography On Wednesday

12

Former WWE Superstar JTG is scheduled to release his first autobiography on Wednesday.

The former Cryme Tyme member will be releasing the tell-all book, which is titled, “Damn! Why Did I Write This Book?” and it will apparently include a number of backstage stories from his time in WWE and OVW.

Below is the official synopsis for JTG’s new autobiography:

“DAMN! WHY DID I WRITE THIS BOOK? Is a compilation of short stories all focused around the four letter word that has ended more wrestling careers than steroids, pills and alcohol combined. HEAT!

HEAT – A “black cloud” that follows a superstar after a personal conflict or misunderstanding between two individuals or more backstage.

In Damn! WHY DID I WRITE THIS BOOK, I take the reader, on a journey, from the beginning of my career, to the final curtain call; sharing stories on how I battled Heat from day one, while managing to piss off more people for writing this book!!!

Ex-WWE Writer Reveals Justin Bieber Wanted To Wrestle At SummerSlam 2014

33

Former WWE writer Kevin Eck revealed in his latest SportsBlog that singer Justin Bieber wanted to wrestle at least year’s SummerSlam. The proposed match would have seen Bieber teaming up with John Cena and Big Show against The Wyatt Family.

There was undoubtedly some concern about Bieber’s public image and how that would contrast with John Cena’s squeaky-clean, never-give-up persona. Eck says WWE had a solution for how to handle that, including a payoff angle that would have gotten WWE a ton of mainstream publicity.

Here is an excerpt from the blog explaining what would have gone down:

The proposed match was discussed among the booking team (which I was on) about five months before SummerSlam, but a deal with Bieber never came to fruition. I’m not sure how close it was to actually happening.

My concern at the time was that Cena teaming up with Bieber — who was making headlines for all the wrong reasons and most definitely would have been booed unmercifully by the WWE audience — would not have done Cena, the face of the company, any favors. To address that concern, the creative suggestion was that Cena would become increasingly annoyed by Bieber in the weeks leading up to the match, but Big Show, who would be portrayed as Bieber’s friend, would repeatedly play peacemaker.

After the babyfaces went over in the match, Bieber would be so obnoxious in trying to take credit for the win that Cena would hit the Attitude Adjustment on him for a big pop. Another point that was raised when discussing the potential match was whether it would have been a bad PR move for WWE to do business with Bieber. The feeling from the powers that be was that if Mayweather liked him, then Bieber must be OK.

ESPN’s Michelle Beadle Explains Why She No Longer Supports WWE

66

Over the weekend, EPSN’s Michelle Beaddle posted a tweet noting that she is no longer a WWE fan as a result of the company’s support for Floyd Mayweather, who has been arrested multiple times for assault and domestic violence.

Beadle was actually denied press credentials to the Mayweather vs. Pacquaio fight over the weekend, along with another female reporter who has been very outspoken about Mayweather’s violence outside the ring.

On Tuesday, Beadle posted a lengthy statement on Twitter explaining her position in-depth.

I am a fan. A fan of sports. A fan of television, good and bad. A fan of 80’s music. Of the Spurs. Of cheesy movies. Of John Oliver. I’ve been a fan of great people and some I shouldn’t have revered at all, those who’ve had their share of transgressions in life. And as of a couple days ago, I was a fan of the WWE. My fandom dates back about 18 years, off and on. I loved the drama. I loved the characters. The over-the-top bravado exhibited by men as they flipped thru the air in an athletic well-choreographed dance. It was pure entertainment, from which I got great joy. Through the years, WWE has been great to me, hooking me up with amazing seats, and giving me access that most fans would love to have. And for that, I’m thankful. I’ve had Superstars on my shows, and willingly plugged numerous campaigns and events for the company. I’ve publicly gone to bat for them as, shockingly, wrestling fans tend to be on the receiving end of some ridicule. I did all of it because I was a fan. But this past weekend has been one that I will remember for a long time to come. We’ll get back to the wrestling in a minute. I promise.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight brought out the best and worst in people. The criminally abusive past that Floyd Mayweather carries served as a dividing line for the nation. On the one side you had the apologists. The men and women who are willing to separate the boxer from the horrendous acts for which he’s been convicted, and cheer him on. On the other side you had those who would not make that jump, and would keep the national discussion of domestic violence issues front and center. And in the middle, you had a large group that just didn’t know. I was once in that last group. Last summer, while hosting the ESPYs Red Carpet, I made the mistake of saying to Mayweather, ‘I like the way you live your life.’ Many people on Twitter called me out, and they were right. I did the research. I learned of the accusations. The convictions. The abuse committed in front of his own children. And the way the judicial system made a mockery of those women, putting the Las Vegas Money Tree ahead of doing the right thing. I immediately apologized and vowed I’d never support that man and his lifestyle. How could I? A man who views women as possessions, things to be controlled. I have to believe that my outspoken stance had something to do with my credential being pulled for the fight. Either that, or the world’s most uncanny coincidence occurred resulting in pulled credentials for at least 3 other members of the media (who also happened to speak out about DV.) The timing was interesting. First I was credentialed. Then I wasn’t. People have tried to dismiss the entire ordeal as a misunderstanding, but emails from network executives say otherwise. It turns out my access was reinstated late Friday night, but to no one’s knowledge. And by then, it was too late. After a week of various national figures bloviating about the greatness of Mayweather, from his prowess in the ring, to his life packed with cars, cash and opulence, I’d had enough. Those that pulled my credential were actually doing me a favor. I was given a pass to leave an event that already had me feeling uneasy and uncomfortable in my career choice. ‘You’re just mad you couldn’t go to the fight’ some have said. I had a ticket; I gave it up. ’So why go at all,’ I’ve been asked. ‘You should have not even gone to Vegas,’ has been thrown around a few times. I’ll tell you why I went. I went because it’s my job. That’s the obvious reason. But more importantly, I went because I have a voice. You may not like my voice. You may find me grating and annoying, and in need of a timeout several times a week. But my voice is all I have. I’m sure I could have gotten a pass on Las Vegas Fight Week coverage. But what does that do? How does that help? Would it have been a much more peaceful weekend for me? Probably. Maybe you think this is for attention. But you’d be wrong. My employers, ESPN and HBO have not once asked me to ‘keep quiet.’ I feel strongly about holding people accountable for their actions. I don’t want to ‘get over it,’ or ‘let it go.’ And yes, I’m aware that there are bad people across all sports that may not get the same coverage. But I’ve seen so many changes in not just what’s being reported, but in the reactions from the public. People are fed up. A lot, not all, but a lot of fans are tired of rooting for horrible human beings, who are allowed to continue to be horrible, so long as they’re winning. My voice is what I have, and I will continue to use it as best I can.

Which brings me back to the WWE. I’m a fan of Triple H. As a wrestler, he was a big part of many of my memories, even as recently as this year’s Wrestlemania. As an Executive Vice President, he’s successfully led the charge in building the WWE’s farm system, NXT. WWE proudly lends its name and backing to Susan G. Komen, Make-A-Wish, and Boys and Girls Clubs, to name a few. They’ve been deeply involved in building an Anti-Bullying campaign, Be A Star. And just last year, Stephanie McMahon strengthened the company’s domestic violence policies: “We have a zero tolerance policy for domestic abuse. Upon arrest for such misconduct, our superstars are immediately suspended and should there be a conviction, that superstar or diva would be terminated.” That’s from the Wellness Policy that applies to all WWE talent. Imagine my confusion when, during the maelstrom of the weekend, I noticed a few tweets that may have, at any other time, gone unnoticed. Tweets that caused me to question my support of the WWE and the man who sits near the top of the company’s food chain. “So why now,” some have wondered. Because sometimes it takes a little longer to see the light. Triple H has continued to display his relationship with Floyd Mayweather through social media, the most recent being a hearty congratulations to the boxer following his victory Saturday night. It’s not my place to say what one should and should not do on Twitter, especially during personal time. However the era in which we’re living is rapidly changing. And the lines between one’s corporate and private personas have blurred. Triple H has over two million followers. He’s one of the faces of a company that depends on a healthy public image. I realize he doesn’t speak for everyone, but does he realize that when he shows support to a convicted batterer, friend or not, it can effectively damage so much goodwill that the company is admittedly doing? It’s hard to sell a message of anti-bullying while slapping the ultimate bully on the back. I was a fan. A big fan. But it’s time to use my voice.

HHH & Jim Ross Praise Sami Zayn’s Performance, WWE Touts YouTube Milestone

15

– WWE is touting the fact that they have had over two billion total views on YouTube in 2015 already.

Speculation On Lana’s Role At Payback, Jericho/WWE Network Podcast Note, DDP Yoga

26

– With WWE going forward with their plans to push Lana after splitting her away from Rusev, there’s a lot of speculation that she will quit for Rusev and cost him the “I Quit” match against John Cena at this month’s WWE Payback pay-per-view.

– Diamond Dallas Page noted that former UFC fighters Phil Baroni and Kamal Shalorus are using DDP Yoga to help make the transition from MMA fighting to professional wrestling.

– Chris Jericho noted on social media that his rock band Fozzy’s single “Tonite” will be the official theme song for his “Live with Chris Jericho” podcast on the WWE Network.

Update On Sami Zayn’s Shoulder Injury, More WWE TV Appearances Scheduled

15

As noted earlier, Sami Zayn suffered a shoulder injury last night on RAW and will be undergoing an MRI later today. The injury actually took place prior to his match with John Cena. During his entrance, Zayn was raising his arms to get the crowd excited and it looked like he tweaked it.

Zayn showed signed of injury earlier in the match but continued working through it. At one point the referee threw up the “X” symbol and a WWE trainer checked on Zayn.

He did appear on the stage for the post-RAW Pat Patterson Appreciation Night celebration, but his shoulder was bandaged up.

It’s worth noting that Zayn was out of action earlier this year with a similar shoulder injury.

Zayn is scheduled for more upcoming WWE TV tapings but that could obviously change pending the results of his MRI.

Sami Zayn Injured At RAW, MRI Scheduled For Today

43

As it turns out, Sami Zayn really was injured during his “U.S. Open Challenge” match with John Cena on Monday’s RAW in Montreal.

Zayn reportedly injured his shoulder while trying to get the crowd pumped up as he was heading to the ring prior to the actual match.

He ended up working the match anyways, despite the fact that the referee threw up the “X” symbol shortly into the match and called for the trainer to check on him.

Zayn is currently scheduled for an MRI today.

WWE RAW Pros & Cons (5/4/15): Ambrose Punches His Ticket To Payback

64

Raw crossed the border into Canada this week as Payback rapidly approaches. Ambrose found a way to sneak into the main event, Ryback and Bray Wyatt continued their feud, and John Cena issued his most epic open challenge to date. Here are the pros and cons from this week’s episode of Raw.

Pros

Screen shot 2015-05-04 at 11.27.26 PM

Randy Orton opened the show by discussing the upcoming Payback pay-per-view. He was only a sentence or two into his soliloquy before being interrupted by Roman Reigns. The two went back and forth for a few, with Reigns saying that Orton “won’t be standing” in two weeks. Orton then read his resume, eventually asking Reigns how many times he’s been a World Heavyweight Champion. Oddly enough, the New Day then interrupted the two, as they vowed to spread the “power of positivity” due to all of the negativity in the ring. Overall, there was some humorous dialogue during the segment, it was nice to see the company booking the tag team champs with the main eventers, and it set up a handicap tag match to start the show.

The opening contest was a three-on-two handicap match between the New Day and Orton and Reigns. During the opening moments, the action was pretty slow, with the faces working over Xavier Woods before Big E came in and hit Orton with a big belly-to-belly suplex. New Day controlled the pace after that, as they isolated Orton and made quick tags. After the break, Reigns took Orton’s place in the New Day’s corner as Xavier Woods attempted to wear him down with a side headlock. Reigns finally hit up Orton with the hot tag and he hit an amazing powerslam on Kofi Kingston after he attempted to utilize a springboard. From there, New Day was getting squashed with Superman punches, DDTs, and RKOs. Reigns and Orton couldn’t keep it together though, as Reigns accidentally hit Orton with a spear and cost his team the match. This match was solid because it made the tag team champions look strong as a cohesive unit, it furthered the tension between Orton and Reigns, and was a fundamentally sound way to start the show. It also set up the main event after Kane made an appearance and announced that Orton and Reigns would compete one-on-one to close the show.

Former members of the greatest stable in recent history collided when Seth Rollins faced off with Dean Ambrose. Kane made the match and announced that if Ambrose were to be victorious, he would be added to the main event at Payback. Ambrose took control early by hitting a massive clothesline at ringside. From there, he worked the champ over while the crowd totally ate it up. Rollins eventually regained control, dominating and dictating the tempo during the middle of the match. Ambrose came back after avoiding a springboard and hitting a tornado DDT. The Lunatic Fringe hit Rollins with a series of clotheslines before executing a bulldog and going into Air Lunatic mode by diving to the floor through the middle ropes. Both guys were able to taste victory with near falls before Rollins destroyed Ambrose with a brutal powerbomb into the barricade. In the end, Ambrose was seconds away from hitting Dirty Deeds before J&J interfered, but it wouldn’t matter as Ambrose would dispose of the goons, roll up Rollins for the win, and secure his spot in the main event at Payback. Awesome match and angle by having all three members of the Shield battle for the title.

King Barrett had a coronation ceremony of sorts after cutting a promo and declaring, “All Hail King Barrett.” No matter how many times they reboot this guy, he makes every gimmick work. He teamed with Sheamus in a tag team match against Neville and Dolph Ziggler. Barrett and Ziggler started the match, with the King pummeling the Show Off with clubbing blows and kicks to the midsection. The action would go to commercial rather quickly after Ziggler took control and sent Barrett sailing to the floor. Sheamus took control during the break and had Ziggler in a headlock after the action returned from break. Ziggler tried to mount a rally but got hit with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Neville and Barrett would both be the recipient of tags, with Neville flying all over the place and dominating Barrett for the most part during a fast-paced frenzy. He wanted the Red Arrow, but Sheamus would distract Neville and allow Barrett to hit the Bull Hammer for the victory.

John Cena cut a passionate promo discussing how he will never give up before issuing another open challenge. None other than Bret “Hitman” Hart answered the call. Hart sadly wasn’t there to fight, but instead to introduce a “great wrestler.” Before he could introduce anyone great, Heath Slater interrupted the legend and got laid out for his troubles. The Hitman then introduced Sami Zayn, much to the surprise of the Montreal crowd and everyone watching at home.

The action was already underway after returning from break, with Cena reeling at ringside. The doctor checked on Zayn after taking a belly-to-back suplex – a move that was obviously done to make Zayn look strong in defeat. Cena and Zayn traded punches before Cena hit three of the Five Moves of Doom before Zayn countered the Five Knuckle Shuffle into a pinning combination. Cena once again was forced to retreat, allowing Zayn to launch himself over the top rope and take out the champ on the floor. Zayn’s inexperience would show as Cena caught him slipping and locked in the STF, even though the upstart challenger would reach the ropes and lock in the Koji Clutch from out of nowhere shortly thereafter. After Cena failed to hit the AA, it became apparent that they were setting up his signature DDT through the middle ropes on the floor, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. After a bit of hesitation, Cena connected with an AA, but Zayn would kick out at two as the crowd cheered. Zayn would eventually succumb to Cena, however, after the champ hit his springboard stunner and another AA. This featured so many memorable spots, the in-ring psychology was great, and it put Zayn over as a worthy competitor even in defeat as he prepares to become a permanent main roster fixture in the near future. Match of the Night, and probably one of the best matches of the year as well.

Ryback’s program with Bray Wyatt continued as he joined Renee Young for an interview. The crowd was dead at first and mostly chanted “Goldberg.” He at least made a good point with the Goldberg chants when he said, “If you ignore it, you just keep doing it.” The Big Guy talked about the adversities he’s faced in his career while talking some smack on Wyatt, eventually winning the crowd back as they joined him in a “Feed Me More” chant. The New Face of Fear then appeared on the big screen and cut a promo saying that Ryback will soon fade away. The segment wasn’t anything special, but both guys cut articulate promos and it advanced their feud, so it’s hard to consider it anything but a positive.

The main event competitors weren’t even making their way to the ring until 11 o’clock, so it was obvious this was going to be very short. Rollins and associates would quickly make their way to ringside and announce their various roles in the match. Orton went for an RKO within seconds but Reigns would avoid the attack. The action was brawling in nature, with few wrestling moves being utilized throughout the match. Rollins guested on commentary during the match and was pretty humorous. When Rollins joined the Authority last summer, he lacked confidence on the mic and some questioned whether he could be a solo star. He’s certainly proven all of the haters wrong over the past year. This would of course end in disqualification after Kane interfered and attacked Roman Reigns before the entire Authority went after Orton. Reigns would dive over the top rope and take them out before being sent into the ring post by Rollins. They isolated Orton and had the upper hand on both Orton and Reigns before Ambrose arrived to make the save. Rollins would take a spear, Reigns would fall victim to an RKO, and Ambrose would be the last man standing after taking out Orton with Dirty Deeds. The wrestling match itself wasn’t that great, but it was a solid way to end the show, put over the fatal four way main event, and perhaps most importantly, get Dean Ambrose back into the main event picture.

As The Bella Twins were making their way to the ring on RAW on Monday night in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, they were attacked from behind by Naomi and Tamina Snuka.

Two surprise appearances took place on Monday’s edition of WWE RAW in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and both of them happened durinng John Cena’s “U.S. Open Challenge.”

After issuing his regular weekly challenge, Cena waited to find out who was going to accept, only for WWE Hall Of Famer Bret “The Hitman” Hart to come out to wild applause from his Canadian fans.

Hart tried to introduce who he callled a great wrestler, when instead Heath Slater came out. Hart nailed Slater with the microphone and made the introduction to the person he was trying to in the first place — former NXT Champion Sami Zayn.

Zayn came out to wild applause from the Montreal fans to his regular upbeat NXT theme song to answer Cena’s “U.S. Open Challenge.”

Zayn gave a game effort in the match, but ultimately lost after Cena hit him with a Springboard Stunner and an Attitude Adjustment back-to-back for a clean pinfall victory.

After the match, Cena made facial expressions like he was shocked how good Zayn was. He raises Zayn’s hand and leaves the ring to him. He claps and walks backwards as Zayn plays to the crowd, who go nuts for him.
