Details On WWE’s Original Plans For King Of The Ring

35

WWE originally planned on having this year’s King Of The Ring tournament take place across several weeks on the WWE Network.

Part of WWE’s original plan for the tournament was for the first week of matches to be free on the WWE Network in April and then fans would have to pay to stay with the Network and watch the tournament conclude in May.

Obviously WWE ended up changing their plans to what we saw this week, which could have something to do with the company announcing another free month for new subscribers.

Sasha Banks On Standing Out With Her New Look, Her Cousin Snoop Dogg, More

21

NXT Women’s Champion Sasha Banks recently spoke with the Miami Herald about her current run in WWE. Below are some highlights from the interview.

On standing out with her look: “I’ve always known that I wanted to be different. I wanted to stand out so my gear is very elaborate, very blingy, very loud, because I want people to notice me, want to look like me. The Boss necklace, the ring. I want everything big.”

On winning the title in a Fatal 4 Way at Takeover in February: “Just to be a part of that, it’s really indescribable. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, but I never really saw it happening. So to be in the moment and see it happening was just crazy. I’ve never had so many tweets in my life. Afterward, people were tweeting ‘That match was Match of the Night.’ ‘You women are [going above and beyond].’”

On her cousin Snoop Dogg: “I hope one day he can make my entrance music. All my family on that side are big WWE fans, huge.”

Finn Balor On Underrated NXT Stars, Who He’d Like To See Join NXT & More

16

NXT star Finn Balor recently appeared on AfterBuzz TV to discuss his current run in WWE. Below are some highlights from the interview.

On which NXT talent he feels is underrated and people should look out for: “There’s a lot of guys you know, obviously for different reasons. One guy you know I think doesn’t get the credit he deserves is Scott Dawson. He’s a tremendous, tremendous competitor and I would love to get in there one-on-one with him. I’m also a big fan of Enzo and Cass. I don’t know how that would work with teaming up with them in a six man tag team, but I’m a big fan of their work too.”

On whether he offered any advice to CJ Parker before he headed back to the independent scene: “We spoke about it….CJ was someone I was fortunate enough to get to work with when he was still here. He’s a tremendous competitor…The indie circuit is a tough circuit, but you know there’s a lot of good people out there. There is a lot of places you can learn. There’s a lot of people you can learn from and I’m sure that he’ll spend a year or two there growing himself not only personally, but as a performer and I’m sure he’ll be back in the future even better.”

On whether there is anyone on the indie scene you think WWE should have their eye on: “I’m a little bit biased because this fella, he started in the same gym as me in England…and hopefully he’ll be able to make the transition some day into WWE, Zack Sabre Jr. He’s doing tremendous in the independents, not only in Europe but in America you know, but he’s holding his own in Japan.”

On working live events in front of his home crowd: “It was quite surreal. It was only less than a year ago that I said goodbye to everyone back home in Ireland and within 10 months to be returning with the WWE main roster. Going to the 3Arena in Dublin which was an arena I used to go and watch WWE when I was a kid. To walk up through the curtain and hear the roar of the hometown crowd, that was incredible.”

On rumors that he accept John Cena’s open challenge for the U.S. Title: “Well, Believe it or not, in London when John was in the ring making the open challenge, I was actually putting my gear on trying to get into the ring…but I just got beat to the punch.”

On where he sees himself in years and whether he he has a plan for life after wrestling: “I live by the motto “Take one step at a time.” Obviously, there are a lot of short-term goals that I want to achieve, both at NXT and WWE. In 10 years time, maybe I’ll be Triple H’s right hand man, pulling the strings up in the office and helping coordinate this incredible company.”

Detailed Recap Of Stephanie McMahon’s Appearance On “Live With Chris Jericho”

8

WWE executive and on-air performer Stephanie McMahon appeared on Chris Jericho’s “Live with Chris Jericho” podcast on the WWE Network on Thursday night after WWE SmackDown. Below is a detailed recap of her appearance courtesy of F4WOnline.com.

The first Jericho podcast featured a fairly friendly conversation with Cena, while this has been hyped up as being an in-character show for Stephanie. Jericho has a black shirt on with a purple tie and has his own set now with his show logo. Chris starts off with “the hard-hitting questions” about her coming back from the WWE employee party and wondering why he wasn’t invited. Jericho says he’s been there for 15 years and hasn’t heard of it. Well, he isn’t an employee, so that would make sense. Jericho says that for a big company, his “big Christmas bonus” was a big plastic Santa. Jericho says he was a bit like Clark Griswold in “Christmas Vacation” when he got the jelly of the month club membership. Chris asks how many employees WWE has and she says 800.

Chris talks about Stephanie going to China, or as Vince calls it, Japan. Stephanie says that she went across the world for the Eisenhouer fellowship. She talks about what the fellowship is and how long it lasts. The fellowship came about due to Eisenhouer wanted this to change the world, so that’s what they’re all trying to do. Jericho says it’s ridiculous that they have to defend WWE after all this time, while Stephanie talks about how they’re in 177 countries with over 400 million social media followers and having the first-ever over the top live streaming industry and how WWE basically pioneered Pay-Per-View.

Chris talks about how WWE is still a family business. Stephanie says that Vince is driven and the kids have more expectations on them as a result. Jericho says Vince is flipping them off off-screen. Steph talks about how Vince grew up from humble beginnings in a trailer and how he earned what he has while she tries to earn everything she has. The worst thing is disappointing him. She talks about how he made her reshoot things during the ECW buyout angle in Boston. Jericho says that while a reshoot can be worked perfectly into a show, it’s an ego-bruiser.

Jericho says she’s very much like Vince, and Steph says Shane calls her the Vincess. She says it’s because she’s studied him so closely. Jericho says that like Vickie, Steph was just thrown on TV and had to hone her character. Steph says that as a mother with three kids, she’s experienced many things in life and in the corporate world that she can apply to her TV character. Jericho says he scared Vince off and asks about the dichotomy of playing an evil character while also spreading the gospel of WWE. Steph talks about how proud she is to represent the company at the Be a Star rally and how some kids have issues separating the character, so they all raise their hands when she asks the wrestlers if they’ve been bullied. Jericho says it could send mixed signals while Steph says she’s just playing a character like in a movie. If they can make a difference in just one life, it’s all worth it.

Steph talks about how Hulk Hogan was bullied a lot as a kid and Jericho says he was bullied a lot too. Bret told Chris that his house was a menagerie with bears and random people in his home. Jericho says that Steph probably didn’t have such a weird upbringing, and she says that in fact, she did since Mr. T and Hogan came over for dinner. Mr. T hates liver (but loves his mother) and Linda made it anyway and he also signed every single thing she had. Her kids came back to her after the Hall of Fame with everything of theirs signed, so that was a cute little bit there.

Jericho asks about her childhood in wrestling, and she says that at the Spectrum, she was scared of George “The Animal” Steele and ran up Vince’s leg, while he chuckled. Vince found it hilarious that she’d be scared of such a nice man, and she started putting the pieces together and loved watching him on “the WWF at the time”, so that will probably be edited later. She loved watching the Killer Bees and Tito Santana. She enjoyed the heels more. Jericho says he and his grandmother started watching with the AWA and she hated Jesse Ventura, while he thought he was so cool because of his look.

Steph said that as a kid, she wanted Vince and Jesse to swap characters because Vince was so much better than Jesse. Jericho asks about Andre and she tells a story Linda loves about Steph being three and her jumping on a trampoline. Andre came up out of his van and her nanny started locking the house up to prevent her from this gigantic man. She stepped on his hand and he lifted her up and she kissed his cheek. She said it was a shame people treated Andre differently, and as Vince’s daughter, she could relate to it. They show the photo of Andre and Steph and she says Vince wouldn’t let her be identified in the photo and actually fell asleep on his lap.

She talks about being bullied because she was Vince’s daughter and had people judge her unfairly. Vince told her “not everyone’s going to like you – for whatever reason.” Would being Swiss be a reason? She says that Shane and Steph wrestled a bunch as kids and he accidentally chucked her past the couches and into the window. She no-sold it to save Shane. Jericho asks if she had any crushes as a kid and she says she loved Bo Duke and she was devastated when he kissed a woman on a Christmas special. Jericho says it was a horrible show, while she says it’s perfect when you’re a kid.

Steph says she always wanted to be in WWE and she started at 14-15 answering the phones. She’d say “Good morning, World Wrestling Federation” exactly like that scene in Beyond the Mat. She says that she memorized employees by their extensions and she had a hard time grasping people by face and not their extensions. She says she fielded a question about Heenan saying there was no Santa Claus and that destroying a kid’s beliefs for a bit and she had to coach the woman a bit on it being a character. Steph says that Mick sure believes in Santa.

She was an intern at various departments and she always needed a job to learn the value of a dollar. She thought Vince believed working with WWE was a phase for her and she interned at new media and snuck into the AOL chats. She worked in HR and mastered the Xerox machine and worked in production too and did clip reels. She even got to do a Summerslam sweepstakes spot.

After college, she interned for her mom and then worked for Vince. She loved going on the road with Vince and says he’s an in the moment teacher. She moved into sales and then got the TV role. Chris says his daughters are eight now and says that if any of them brought him over, she’d forbid them from dating wrestlers. Steph says that Vince was against her doing that too, but wind up throwing them together.

Vince told her she needed a guy exactly like HHH, while Shane clarified “one that isn’t him”. Once they started dating, Vince forbade it. She says Vince got cold feet due to the affect it could have on business and she tells Chris that she has water if he needs it. She says that HHH took a big risk since the relationship failing could be his entire career. After a year apart, they got back together.

Steph said she wanted to move forward and Linda told her that she couldn’t bring any of the issues up later. Stephanie says that they moved in together when they gained maturity and Jericho asks if it was hard when the locker room found out. Steph says it was all on HHH in the locker room and the agents were against it. She said that HHH was singled out, but came through it. Jericho talks about the history of this happening with wrestlers marrying into the family and that hurting companies.

Jericho says she has no problem being mocked or made a fool. Steph says she’s clumsy by nature and doesn’t mind being made to look foolish. She says the key is to build the heat up and then deliver the ultimate payoff given the actions of her character. Jericho says Steph helped take him to the next level with a Tampa show and him accidentally calling her a ho and that showing off their chemistry.

Jericho says that he found it odd that kids chanted the trashbag ho line, and Steph says she’s honored to help get him over and the role of her character is to get characters over if she can. So if that doesn’t happen, it’s because of the other person – Stephanie does all she can to get people over. Jericho says she got a zit and Steph says they’re big on her and it’s a bit like Austin Powers. Jericho talks about the Planet of the Apes skit being due to Vince really loving apes at the time. Jericho runs through the promo being about her sleeping with all creatures across the galaxy. There’s also a cake involved in this and we get a shot of it.

Jericho goes through all of their promos including the classic one with him pointing out her breast enlargement. Jericho talks about the cutoff line in there that Rock wasn’t supposed to say and Steph was supposed to cut him off before he got to “mother_____”. Vince screamed at Rock about it and Rock said that Steph was supposed to cut her off. She says she got her breasts done because she lost weight and wasn’t happy with what it did to her body, so she got them done for herself.

Jericho says that Vince was totally okay with saying she lost her flower many years ago as long as he paused for maximum effect. Jericho says that in ’97, he heard about how Stephanie was going to take over for Vince since she was more like Vince. Steph says it’s weird for him to not be around, but as kids, Vince and Linda weren’t around a lot because they were building the business. After watching five hours of kung fu movies, Shane liked to kick her butt. Steph says she supports Shane, but she misses him and loves working with him because he’s so funny.

Steph says that there was a skit where she was in the middle of HHH and Shane and she had to slap both of them over and over. She plans to get together with Shane for mother’s day. Jericho says for Shane, it was stifling for him here, but maybe he’ll come back. Steph says that Linda retired and Jericho says that now it’s just Steph and Vince while Jericho talks about the “McMahon in every corner” at WM. Jericho says that Steph has a stiff slap, and Steph tells us that she pulled the slap and it was the hardest thing she’s ever done other than kiss Eric Bischoff. Steph says Linda laid the slap in, but it wasn’t the first time.

Jericho says you had to clinch your teeth when she slapped them, but she says the boys told her to do it. She says the hardest slap was to Rock, which is pretty accurate – that was a hard slap and you can see it in all of the replays they show of it now. Jericho talks about that segment and being confused by it at first, but loving it. They talk about Ronda being a big fan and not being sure what the future holds for Ronda and WWE right now. Steph says the fans picked up on the Ronda stuff organically, so they knew they had magic.

Steph puts over Ronda as a role model who doesn’t set out to be one, but is one. She’s an inspiration and Steph says she’d love to have Steph vs. Ronda. They talk about Dana White nixing the match and Steph says she doesn’t know what’s going to happen with all that. Steph says that she’s pushing the #givedivasachance thing that THE FANS STARTED. Oh wow. She talks about the women being limited in time and there isn’t a reason why, but since the fans started the movement and Vince responded, not to AJ Lee, but to the fans. Jericho talks about AJ starting it with a smart aleck response and how the women don’t get equal pay, but draw. She says she wasn’t pissed off by AJ’s statement and she had to respond diplomatically, and #givedivasachance was IN THE PROCESS OF TRENDING at the time.

What in the hell does that even mean? AJ’s response was due to Stephanie and not givedivasachance, and Stephanie is fully behind it. Stephanie says that there’s a chance she’s misremembering the timeline. Well, that’s an understatement. Jericho says that NXT is what the divas division should be and Steph says that she was the first female main eventer on WWE and Jericho says that proved that women could main event again. Stephanie says that can happen again, but you need the right story. Jericho says they should just try it out on SmackDown and see how it works. Steph talks about loving Ronda and loving being a heel.

Steph says the people want her to be the most obnoxious heel out there and the more she does that, fans get even more engaged. They finally show a still shot of the Rock slap and Jericho says that in the PG world, “ho” is now just something for gardening. Jericho talks about the pudding bit with Vickie and Steph says that it was banana and chocolate pudding blended with the feet of the employees. She developed an infection in her eye due to that and she isn’t quite sure what it was supposed to be, while Jericho just outright says it was supposed to be feces at Vince’s order. Steph says that Vickie was the first person to get one over on this heel character.

Jericho asks if it’s hard to be around HHH all the time and she says they aren’t. On Raw, that’s true, but he’s on the road while they have different roles in the office so they don’t see each other often. She likes being able to send her kids to school and make lunches, while Hunter did that while she was away. Steph talks about her eight year old training with Nattie now and being a natural heel. She’s already written a book on how to be a diva.

Jericho asks what her favorite match and moment is. Steph says it’s the Summerslam match with Brie. She says that after 11 years of being out of the ring, and she wishes she could do it more. She says that it was a highlight of the PPV and they even main evented Raw and how she loved that her daughters got to see her wrestle. She says that her kids ran up to her backstage and chanted “you still got it” and if they get into the business, they’ll be fifth generation. They close with an amusing little double tea sip.

Other than basically whitewashing AJ Lee out of the whole #givedivasachance thing, complete with Steph giving herself an out by saying that she might have the limeline wrong, this was fun. The stuff about her growing up in wrestling and taking on different roles in the company gave you a bit more insight into her. The best things involved her talking about her kids because there’s nothing she’s going to BS about with them. You get a sense that every single thing involving them was real, and that all felt genuine. This was far more eventful and entertaining than the Cena show, and while Jericho’s going to play it a lot safer than Austin would, it’s still forward-thinking of WWE to have these programs and use the Network to add layers to the on-air personas whenever possible.

We think that the Ring of Honor tag team division is the deepest in wrestling. We have the best tag teams. So we want to be where the best are, so we can prove ourselves. Johnny Mundo On If He’d Consider Another WWE Run, His Work In Lucha Underground & More

7

Lucha Underground star Johnny Mundo, formerly known as John Morrison, recently spoke with the folks at Ring Rust Radio about a number of subjects, including whether or not he’s interested in another run with WWE. Below are some highlights:

On whether there is pressure on him to take Lucha Underground to the next level and how it feels to be a cornerstone of the brand: “First of all, it feels really good to be in on something from day one and the ground floor. Being a part of something that is finding its own identity as it evolves is exciting. It’s in my hometown of Los Angeles, and it’s been awesome to be a part of it since day one. That feel really good and I am proud of that. As for pressure, it’s kind of nice to be an upstart since there wasn’t much expectation of Lucha Underground. Wrestling promotions are kind of like new religions, nine out of ten fail in the first year. So the bar was set low, and I think immediately we exceeded expectations. Especially as soon as Lucha Underground started airing on TV and people started seeing what the product looked like, we started having to turn people away at the tapings. Every taping especially toward the end of the season, we had to turn away 1,000 – 1,500 people. The tickets are free to the tapings, so it wasn’t like you paid for a ticket and got turned away, still, it was a case where demand exceeded supply, and that’s always a good position to be in.”

On the thought process leading up to his signing with Lucha Underground and why it’s such a good fit: “The first part was just logistics. Los Angeles is my home town, it’s where I live, and so no travel that appeals to me. Secondly, I was a little skeptical until I took a tour of the facility and the facility looked great. It was in this dumpy warehouse in Boyle Heights, where I shot a movie with Danny Trejo two years prior. Melina and I were sexy, underground mole people in the film and I remember we were killing time and hanging with Danny Trejo beneath the subways of New York in this warehouse. So when I went to this warehouse I remembered how it looked two years ago versus how it looked with the Lucha Underground set built and I was blown away. This is a production that cares about the art decoration and is running it like a movie instead of a TV show. Then you add to that the names from WWE that I was familiar with like Chris Roach, Matt Stillman, and Eric Von Wagner from Tough Enough. They started lining up other people that I knew of like Big Rick, Chavo, and a lot of indie wrestlers that I have always been a fan of like Son of Havoc and Prince Puma. Then they went and added huge stars from AAA that I was vaguely familiar with but now am very familiar with. I thought it was a really cool combination of Lucha, which I have always been a fan of, and films with Robert Rodriguez thumbprint and vide. Mix all that with American style pro-wrestling, like the story telling aspect of what we did in the WWE. So adding the psychology of Lucha, with the production value of an action film, is pretty much combining all my worlds or “Mundos” in one wrestling promotion.”

On the trigger for Lucha Underground’s success so far and the atmosphere like backstage among the other wrestlers: “Everybody gets criticized, and sometimes wrestling promotions start catering to the internet and fans. From day one, Lucha Underground had this belief in itself, as an idea, a new promotion, and had a vision of what it was going to be. Ya know, as a kid I was a huge fan of the Undertaker. He rose from the dead, used the lightning, he was an undead force. But now, a lot of the mysticism and mystery has left the WWE and now they are more reality based and going in a different direction. Lucha Underground sees wrestling in that same way. Drago is a fire breathing dragon, Muertes is raised from the dead, Phoenix has been reborn, and they are adding a layer of mystery to wrestling that is refreshing to me as a wrestling fan. I think that is one thing that really added success about it. Staying true to that vision despite criticism from wrestling fans. I think some people criticism and some people enjoy it, but at the end of the day when things are done well, everybody enjoys it. They put a lot of production value into the vignettes, and they hire talented people.”

On how Prince Puma has handled being the company’s first champion: “I think he handled himself extremely well and like a champion. He is somebody that the promotion can go to and represent Lucha Underground. He is a perfect combination of lucha, acrobatics, and storytelling; he gets it so to speak. It’s cool to see him really embracing his role as a champion of Lucha Underground and he has done great representing the company. He is probably doing almost as good as a job as I would do as champion.”

On his interest level regarding a feud with Alberto El Patron and how the crowd would react in terms of who they’d support: “First of all, Alberto is extremely talented and I did wrestle him a few times in WWE, but we never had enough time to put on the kind of match that I am looking forward to with him in Lucha Underground. It’s very interesting the way he left WWE I think represents what pro-wrestlers should represent. He stood up for himself and the culture and that’s been resonating with me and the fans of Lucha Underground. You can identify with somebody who stands up for who they are and what they believe in. He is also a very talented wrestler and I am looking forward to getting in the ring with him because I think that people aren’t going to believe the type of match we are going to have. As far as how the fans will respond? I mean, Los Angeles is my hometown, and has been for Lucha Underground since day one, so I think a lot of fans that are going to see that and the hard work I have done, and chant “Mundo” until their faces melt. There are also a lot of fans that will respect Alberto and where he comes from and the talent he has in the ring and chant for him. The true winner is going to be the fans in the temple when Albert and I are in the ring.”

On how competitive the Lucha Underground locker room and whether there is a sense of one upsmanship: “Yes and I think that is one of things that is making it great. It’s a company that is very young in its inception. I have been pushed to new levels and doing things that I have never done in WWE. I have been pushed hard and made to think outside of the box. I think it’s a competitive environment but also supportive. People are in the locker room rooting for each other, and when someone does something new and innovative people are happy. People are hoping the move works out well and that everybody involved is safe, and when someone does something cool there will be a huge pop in the locker room when everybody watches it. I think that’s the kind of environment that breeds the most creativity and it’s another reason why I enjoy being there. It’s a family environment and everybody there is having a good time.”

On whether his work as an actor has helped improve his mic skills whether he would ever give any thought to another run with WWE: “Yes and yes. I think that my work as an actor has definitely helped. As far as my work with the WWE goes, you can never predict the future with pro-wrestling, anything is possible. I will say I am super happy with Lucha Underground. I’m not planning on going anywhere in the near future except for wrestling for Lucha Underground season 2. The crazy thing about wrestling is as soon as someone says you can cut a good promo, it means you can go cut a good promo. Perception is reality. I think I cut good promos while in the WWE and I cut some bad ones, so the perception was I couldn’t cut a good promo, then that became reality. Now with Lucha Underground, I cut some good promos, and I cut a few that weren’t so good, but most of everything I have done has been top notch and some of my best work. I feel like that has shone through and people identified that and have seen the improvement. That’s why it all of a sudden is perceived differently.”

On whether there anyone you worked with that he would like see come to Lucha Underground: “Johnny Mundo: Right now, Lucha Underground almost has too much talent. They have a packed roster, full of very talented wrestlers, and an hour of TV time to work with. They can bring in whoever they want; it’s just a matter of how much time they have for them on their program. I hope that we start going a little bit longer, like a 90 minute show to give people more time to showcase themselves and longer stories. That is my hope and it’s ultimately not up to me. There is talk about everything right now. There is so much talk about so many things. Every organization goes through growing pains, especially when people are excited about a wrestling promotion, people talk about everything: Action figures, games, endorsements, live tours, two hour wrestling shows. The main thing Lucha Underground needs to do is focus on continuing to produce a very good, one hour show, and grow slowly. Maintain the quality, so far everything I have seen is that, everyone’s head is in the right place, and everyone is excited for season two and everyone is excited about Lucha. Because of all those ducks lining up in an awesome row, Lucha Underground is going to continue to grow and be successful.”

On his vision for himself and Lucha Underground: “I am excited to be along for this ride and to see where it goes. I dig the vignettes; they come off like a gritty action film straight off an AMC TV show. I’m thinking that I’d love to be in one of those and see that happen. I really just am excited to be a part of what comes next. I’m looking forward to it, and glad with the feedback I have gotten from friends in the business and fans and personal friends have been all extremely positive. I am excited, everyone’s excited, and I am thankful for all the fans who are enjoying the product and without that, there would be no Johnny Mundo.”

Talents GFW Has Reached Out To, Jeff Jarrett Denies Eric Bischoff/GFW Reports

16

Jeff Jarrett has been contacting a number of talents to be part of his upstart Global Force Wrestling promotion in recent weeks.

Jarrett is apparently going after signed talents that have their deals with Ring Of Honor or TNA expiring soon, as well as unsigned talents.

The biggest name that GFW has reportedly reached out to is Roderick Strong, however there are rumors of talks with Team 3D, Chris Masters and Shelton Benjamin as well.

Jarrett has Sonjay Dutt and Scott D’Amore working on the office side of things for the promotion, and Dutt has been the one calling most of the aforementioned talents.

Regarding the offers to talents, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Jarrett has been offering the possibility of working 39 dates with the promotion.

As far as the rumors of Eric Bischoff being part of the promotion, Jarrett is denying these claims. Regarding Bischoff, Jarrett stated, “If GFW and BHE (Bischoff-Hervey Enterprises) are going to work together, we will not announce it at a Q&A in the U.K. They obviously heard what they wanted to hear.”

PPV Buyrates Released For WrestleMania 31, Royal Rumble & Fastlane

5

During today’s WWE quarterly conference call, the official buy numbers were released for the WrestleMania 31 pay-per-view, as well as the first ever Fastlane show and this year’s Royal Rumble.

Of course, we have to take into account the WWE Network factor, with most WWE fans streaming the show through the over-the-top subscription service. That said, it’s still interesting to see such high traditional PPV numbers a year after the Network launch.

The Royal Rumble pay-per-view drew 145,000 buys, down from 467,000 buys in 2014, and 512,000 buys in 2012.

The first ever Fastlane show scored 46,000 buys. The WWE Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, which was the previous name before the switch to Fastlane, produced 183,000 buys in February 2014, and from 213,000 buys in February 2013.

Finally, WrestleMania 31 delivered 259,000 pay-per-view buys. The WrestleMania 30 pay-per-view drew 690,000 pay-per-view buys, and WrestleMania 29 scored 1,039,000 buys.

Jesse Ventura Talks About The Late Verne Gagne, Creation Of “The Body” Nickname

8

WWE Hall Of Famer Jesse “The Body” Ventura recently appeared on The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast to talk about the late AWA promoter Verne Gagne. Below are some highlights:

On Verne Gagne’s creation of “The Body” nickname: “You have to remember both Hulk (Hogan) and I wrestled in other places before we came to the AWA. I had been wrestling five years, I wrestled in Portland, Oregon for three years, Hawaii and so let’s put it this way. It was during my tenure with Verne that I became Jesse “the Body” Ventura. In fact, Verne named me that. He had lost Superstar Billy Graham a couple of years earlier and he asked me; “Can you do Superstar Graham?” I told him I could do Superstar Graham better then Graham, because Billy was my hero. There would not have been a Hulk Hogan or a Jesse Ventura if there was no Superstar Billy Graham. Verne said to me that’s what we want and it was Verne that actually thought of it, he said I want to call you Jesse “The Body” and I want you to pose and do all that stuff that Graham does and that’s where the birth of Jesse “The Body” came from.”

On working for Verne Gagne in the AWA: “Verne had a great territory. The thing that made Verne’s territory so good was that you only wrestled about 12 or 14 times a month at the most. It gave you ample time with your family and ample time to work out and recover from injuries. I remember in Oregon I wrestled 63 consecutive nights in a row without a day off and there are guys who wrestled way more than that and beat that record like it was nothing. When you wrestled for Verne you would wrestle a day or two and then get three or four days off so it really made the Minneapolis territory at that time a wonderful place to be, if you wanted to make good money and not be on the road every day of your life.”

On Verne being a perfectionist: “We would be doing interviews and Greg (Gagne) would be running the interviews and we would bang through every market and have it down to like two or three markets and then Verne would come in and you would be there for six hours doing the final two markets. I would get so angry about that. At the time I lived along the Mississippi River and I would be so ticked off that I would park my car on the river bank before I would go into see my wife and kids. I look back on it now at age 63 and laugh about it but at the time it was happening Verne could literally (laughs) drive you crazy.”

On teaming with Adrian Adonis as part of the East-West Connection in the AWA and WWF: “Adrian was phenomenal in the ring and I couldn’t have asked for a better and more athletic partner, he was a great wrestler and could do anything you could imagine. My only problem with Adrian was after being with him for three or four years, was outside the ring Adrian sometimes required a babysitter and I got tired of that role. I didn’t feel as a professional it was my job to make sure Adrian made the planes on time and the events on time. So he became a little dependent on me and I really didn’t like that aspect of being with him and that was one of the reasons I finally broke the tag team up. Taking care of myself is a load enough, I don’t need to be taking care of a second person and don’t get me wrong that was all stuff outside of the ring, Adrian was never a problem in the ring at all..ever.”

On his favorite match teaming with Adrian: “When we beat the High Flyers at the St. Paul Civic Center and I always loved that I got the pin on Greg Gagne, so it will go down in history that Jesse Ventura gave Greg Gagne the spike pile-driver with a little help from Adrian and covered him 1-2-3. That’s on the famous AWA tape that Vince has out there now, I know because I actually watched it this past winter.”

Major Update On Lucha Underground’s Future, Rumored TV Deals, Mysterio & Alberto

27

While a second season of Luhca Underground has yet to be confirmed, almost everybody in the company is under the impression that it will be happening. Lucha Underground currently has episodes taped through August, including the Ultimo Lucha 2-hour season finale that’s gotten rave reviews from fans who were in attendance.

The working plan is for season 2 episodes to keep a similar production schedule as last year, with the first episodes of the new season being taped in September and a late September/early October premiere.

Rey Mysterio and Alberto El Patron are expected to be the new faces of the promotion from a marketing standpoint, due to their star power in the United States in Mexico.

There is also talk of holding tapings on the road, with Texas being discussed as well as other locations in the south west. Production expenses remain a big issue for the promotion. While the show has been critically acclaimed, the ad revenue based on the current level of TV exposure is not covering their costs.

Lucha Underground continues to push for more TV deals, hoping to get on Univision in the United States and on Televisa in Mexico. A deal with Televisa would be a game changer, which would make Lucha Underground more accessible in Mexico than even AAA.

A deal with Univision would make Lucha Underground the number two national promotion in the United States, available in more homes than Impact Wrestling. Granted these would be Spanish-language broadcasts (El Rey continuing to air the English shows), but landing one or both of these new TV deals will be a huge victory for them.

Latest On Samoa Joe Coming To WWE, Jim Ross Working With WWE Again

15

As noted, Samoa Joe and Jim Ross were both in Orlando, Florida for last week’s NXT television tapings in Winter Park, Florida.

While in Florida, Joe met with Triple H about coming into the company. While the working plan is that Joe will be starting with NXT in June, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that June is not official just yet. One of the reasons could be the multiple pre-signing tests that talents have to go through.

Jim Ross also spoke with the company about working on various projects together while he was there.

Plans For Lana To Be The Female Face Of WWE

76

There are storyline plans in place for Lana to become the new “female face of WWE” as part of a huge babyface push that will be kicking off in coming weeks.

We’ve already seen the tension growing between Lana and Rusev over the past month. Following AJ Lee’s retirement, Paige taking time off to film a WWE Studios movie and Naomi turning heel, there’s an opening for a new top babyface Diva and fans seem ready to fully embrace Lana.

Vince McMahon in particular is a strong supporter of the Ravishing Russian, with the current storyline plans set to reveal that she’s actually American. While she’ll most likely continue using the Lana name, there has also been talk of using the name “C.J.,” as her real name is Catherine Jo Perry.

Lana was known as CJ Perry prior to joining WWE and of course there’s the tie-in with Pamela Anderson’s “CJ” character from Baywatch.

The Miz Gives His Take On Why WWE Fans React Negatively To Roman Reigns

76

WWE Superstars and co-stars of The Marine 4, The Miz and Summer Rae, recently appeared on the Sam Roberts Podcast for an in-depth, hour-long interview.

During the discussion, The Miz spoke about the negative fan reaction to Roman Reigns.

“The WWE fans and the bloggers and the Twitter people, they all think they know everything about the WWE and what it takes to be a WWE Superstar,” said The Miz. “They think they know what’s right. They are entitled to their opinions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, that is no problem, but the fact is Roman Reigns works hard.”

Miz continued, “A lot of the things you read are like, ‘the system is giving him the push.’ It’s like who cares if it is or it isn’t? The guy is talented, the guy is good at what he does. If WWE ignored him they would love him even more. They like people that it’s like ‘we made him.’ Daniel Bryan – ‘we made him.'”

Former WWE Creative Team Member Says WWE App Polls Are Completely Legitimate

20

Former WWE creative team member Kevin Eck posted a new blog at SportsBlog.com addressing whether or or not the WWE App poll voting is legitimate.

Eck, who wrote for WWE from 2011-2014 said, “It was all completely legitimate.”

“I know many will be skeptical, but it’s the truth,” he said. “I can tell you that there were times when I and other members of the creative team suggested to Vince McMahon that we work the results to get the desired outcome, but he always refused to ‘compromise the integrity of the voting.’ I felt like we were working ourselves, especially since the majority of people didn’t believe the voting was legit anyway.”

He went on to tell a few stories about the stress WWE writers endure, not knowing the results of fan votes until right before they are revealed on television.

Mason Ryan On His Run In WWE, If He’s Interested In Going Back & More

15

Former WWE Superstar Mason Ryan recently spoke with Tom Feaheny about his run with WWE and more. Below are some highlights of the interview.

On his run in the WWE: “It was a dream come true, moving to America and living the American lifestyle and on top of that being able to do what I’ve dreamt of on TV in front of millions of people of TV and thousands of people in stadiums all over the world, was hard to describe, I loved it it was everything I dreamed of and more.”

On the differences wrestling on the indie scene and in the WWE: “The indie scene is different to the WWE, your lucky with the WWE, everything is taken care for you, your flights, merchandise, all the shows are lined up. Wrestling is always wrestling, it’s something that I love, it’s an art form and I love to have people come along and enjoy the shows, the biggest difference is there is a lot more on me to organize stuff.”

On if he’s interested in going back to WWE or Impact Wrestling: “I’d consider it, I’d be crazy not to, but I’ve enjoyed traveling the world, I’ve been in Japan, I’m going to Germany and France then going to America, then going back to Japan, my schedule is pretty busy, it’s kind of non-stop, but obviously Impact Wrestling is a great company and WWE is the biggest wrestling company in the world, so the door is 100 percent open.”
