Santino Interview: His Neck Injury & WWE Career, Punk-UFC & More

1

Former WWE Superstar Santino Marella recently spoke with Joshua Lopez of the Pro Wrestling Experience podcast. Topics covered include his early days in the business, his Battle Arts Academy in Canada and more. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

The Status Of His Injured Neck:

“Not too good. Wish I could report better. when I had the initial surgery, I felt a little bit better and started training and then two of the screws came out, so we had to go in and take out all of the titanium. Little set back with regards to the fact that your body tends to overreact with that type of surgery. Your neck tightens up and it’s effecting other parts of your back. It’s getting there.”

His Time With WWE:

“It’s crazy because like now because of YouTube. People will send me links all the time and so many fun and great moments there. Wrestling has been great. The locker room has always been great since I’ve been there. Traveling the world, putting on shows and for me it’s pure fun getting out there. I tell people that I wrestle for free, I just get paid to drag my bags around.”

Competing at WrestleMania:

“It’s sport entertainment yet you get this playoff feeling in your stomach. You up your training and take it seriously. There’s tension. It seems like any sports entertainer is going to be not judged but significantly remembered for there WrestleMania moments. It’s all about legacy. I love performing at WrestleMania. I’ll be down there this year to enjoy the event as a fan and I’ll be doing a couple signings at Axxess and looking at the card for this year’s Mania I can’t wait to enjoy the show as a fan for this WrestleMania.”

CM Punk’s Chances In UFC:

“Well it’s interesting. Punk is a super cardio efficient athlete. He’s very meticulous with his training. He trains hard. Definitely has the skills as an athlete to be a solid fighter and he trained in jiu jitsu. Has he been studying? I knew that he did karate as a kid. How is his kickboxing/boxing? That’s the only thing I’m worrying about. I’m only worrying because I don’t know, he could be kickboxing at Roufusport right now as we speak (laughing). He’ll have to be a high level and that’s the hard part.”

Word Association:

Maria – Sexy Kitty Cat

Emma – Sexy meets goofy

John Cena – Hardworking

Randy Orton – My buddy

Roman Reigns – The future. I see that everybody saying, “Oh they’re pushing and shoving down our throats.” You complain for 10 years that you wanted something new and here it is and yet you’re still complaining. He’s a high caliber athlete. Very nice guy. Very locker room oriented guy. The industry is going to be in good hands.

Vince McMahon – My idol

Triple H – Tons of respect

*Spoiler* Final WWE HOF Inductee Revealed

62

It’s no secret at this point that Kevin Nash will be announced as the final member of the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2015. However, up until today, it was unknown whether he would be going in as Kevin Nash or Diesel.

Much like his former tag team partner Scott Hall being inducted as “Razor Ramon,” it will be Diesel that enters the Hall of Fame this year, paving the way for Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to one day be inducted as part of the nWo.

He will be inducted by longtime friend and rival, fellow Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels.

The following t-shirt designs leaked online earlier today confirming the news of Diesel’s forthcoming induction:

Update On Rumors Of Adrian Neville’s Main WWE Roster Gimmick

96

Regarding the rumors that WWE was planning to bring NXT star Adrian Neville to the main roster with a “Mighty Mouse” type-character, there has been no discussions of this happening recently. It is, however, an idea that Vince McMahon has wanted to do with a short wrestler for quite a while.

There was talk at one point of bringing Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo in for that role, however he chose to pursue a career in MMA instead, with his second UFC victory taking place this past weekend.

Update On Rey Mysterio’s Lucha Underground Status, How Long He Has Left In The Ring

18

Although Rey Mysterio is still expected to debut with Lucha Underground at their television tapings this weekend, he has yet to finalize his deal as of this week.

Mysterio is looking to wrestle a limited schedule due to his knee issues. His feeling is that if he picks and chooses his dates, he could last another three or four years in the ring, whereas if he works a regular schedule, he likely doesn’t have a lot of time left.

As things stand now, the belief is that the majority of Mysterio’s bookings will be either in AAA in Mexico or Lucha Underground.

Additionally, Mysterio has been pitched the idea of having his own merchandise line separate from any specific wrestling company. The products would be targeting Latinos and children.

According to the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Simmons and JBL will be doing an angle of some kind on Monday’s show.

– Former U.K. soccer player Stuart Tomlinson, who is currently working in NXT as Hugo Knox, is considered to be progressing way ahead of the rest of the developmental talents, especially considering his experience level in the business. Knox is 29 years old and has only been in WWE developmental for 15 months, yet has been impressing WWE officials more than most. Currently, he is doing a Chippendale-type gimmick for promos, but has also started wrestling and is considered to be quite agile for his size.

Sami Zayn Out Of Action Due To Injury

18

NXT Champion Kevin Owens isn’t the only top NXT star currently out of action with injury. Sami Zayn, the man he defeated for the championship at the most recent NXT TakeOver event, is also currently dealing with an unspecified injury.

Zayn was advertised for both of this month NXT live events from Ohio, but did not wrestle at either show and just cut in-ring promos.

His most recent match was with Tyler Breeze at a live event on February 20th. Prior to the Ohio shows, Zayn wrote on Facebook:

“Thanks to everyone who came out and supported NXT in Ohio this past weekend. I meant every word I said. This is a group that is taking control of our own destiny and taking over the industry in the process. Revolution is in the air and thanks for being a part of it.”

WWE ran an injury storyline for Zayn after his match against Kevin Owens at TakeOver, but a report in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter is the first indication he’s legitimately hurt.

Paige Talks About Wrestling Stephanie McMahon, Dream Opponents

2

Paige spoke with TalkSPORT’s Gorilla Position podcast this week to promote WrestleMania 31. The former Divas champion revealed that her “dream match” with Stephanie McMahon would be an Extreme Rules match:

“I would definitely want to do some kind of extreme match, because girls don’t get to do it. I would love to have a match with Stephanie McMahon. And any kind of extreme rules match, even if it just falls count anywhere.”

She also named several other legendary women’s wrestlers she’d love to get into the ring with.

“Bull Nakano is another one of my favourite wrestlers of all time, she’s incredible. Alundra Blayze, too – and I always thought Michelle McCool was an incredible talent, too. And Mickie James… I have a lot of people I’d like to wrestle! But if we had to do it now, I would say I would want to go up against Emma, in an extreme rules match at Madison Square Garden in New York. We were there recently and it is such an incredible venue.”

Chris Jericho Says He’s Satisfied If He Never Wrestles Again, Talks About His Fans & More

25

Part-time WWE performer Chris Jericho recently spoke with BlabberMouth.net about a number of topics. Below are highlights from the interview.

On being satisfied if he never wrestles another match in his career: “I’ve been very smart over the last ten years in building the Chris Jericho brand, and wrestling is a part of what I do, but it’s not by far the biggest thing of what I do by any shape or form. And sometimes that confuses some of my fans, but I really don’t care. If I never wrestle another match again, I’m happy with it. I’ve done all that I ever wanted to do and more. I still like going back [to wrestling] from time to time, because it’s fun. But when other things come up, things that I’ve been working on for a long period of time, they start paying off, well, then you’ve gotta be there and spend that time on that as well.”

On fans who stick with him through his various career projects and those who don’t: “I’ve always lived my life doing what I wanna do and what feels right to me — not for money, [and] not what other people want me to do. If I listened to what other people want me to do, I never would have gotten into wrestling in the first place; everyone said I was too small. I never would have gotten into rock and roll in the first place; everyone said, ‘You’ll never do it.’ So I learned a long time ago to be really happy with what you’re doing career-wise; you have to follow your heart and do what you feel is right and commit to it. And if you commit to it, you’ll make it; you’ll do it. And, thankfully, the majority of my fans follow me throughout everything that I do. And if they don’t, thanks for being aboard as long as you were. Thanks for being a part of it. And if you feel like you have to go the other way, that’s cool too.”

More Details On WWE Network Press Conference On March 30th

3

As reported earlier today, WWE is scheduled to host a WWE Network press conference on March 30th, the day after WrestleMania 31, to announce the latest subscriber count.

WWE issued the following press release today regarding the upcoming press conference.

WWE Network(R) Post-WrestleMania Conference Call

WWE(R) (NYSE:WWE) announced that it will host a conference call on Monday, March 30, 2015 at 12:00 noon ET to discuss the progress of WWE Network, including WWE Network’s level of subscribers following WrestleMania and the network’s 2015 programming schedule. All interested parties are welcome to listen to a live web cast that will be hosted through the Company’s web site at ir.corporate.wwe.com. Participants can access the conference call by dialing 1-855-200-4993 (toll free) or 1-913-489-5104 from outside the U.S. (conference ID for both lines: 7011866). Ethan Carter III Talks In-Depth About Training Under Bill DeMott While In WWE Developmental

8

TNA performer Ethan Carter III recently spoke to the folks at WhatCulture.com about his experiences training under former NXT head coach Bill DeMott.

EC3 stated the following about working with DeMott while in the WWE developmental system.

“(Worked with him in WWE developmental) Having been there at that time, I witnessed a lot of it. This industry is extremely difficult and, to achieve success in it, I 100% agree it needs to be hard. It needs to be earned. Preparing for the demands of the industry, both physical and mental, are essential. It requires a special psyche that all may not possess.

Having said that, I feel there is a big difference between a hard-nosed individual pushing you to the limit to become great, and blatant bullying.

It is an unfortunate scenario that transpired, as that position holds great power in many peoples careers and physical well being. I feel that in this day and age, with what we know about concussions, someone being slapped in the head while possibly suffering from one is unacceptable. Asking talent to conceal injuries that your “training tactics” are responsible for is unacceptable. Leading the charge on an anti-bullying campaign, while that very thing is taking place under your watch, is unacceptable.

A company making a statement that the accusations “fully investigated” when they were not, well, that is just is very disheartening.

Then again, it is not my company to run. I don’t know the inner workings. Perhaps I am wrong. Our generation has been labeled “unmotivated and lazy,” which I can’t disagree with more. Some of the hardest working/creative people I know are putting in maximum effort for just an inkling of success.

Saying that this entire group has “a feeling of entitlement and a certain level of defiance” (which has since been recanted) is painting very broad strokes and not looking at individual talent. Plus, I believe it was a “level of defiance” that made people like Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, The Rock, HHH and John Cena some of the biggest stars this industry has ever seen.

In the end, if you believe or enable homophobia, racism, and bullying as coaching methods, we strongly disagree.”

Bill DeMott Wants To Tell His Side Of The Story, Recent WWE Attendance Figures

6

– Multiple sources are reporting that former NXT head trainer Bill DeMott wants to give his side of the story after resigning from the company a few weeks ago following a lot of controversy. DeMott, however, has been asked by WWE to remain quiet for the time being due to legal reasons. As noted, WWE is expecting lawsuits to be filed as a result of the DeMott controversy.

– The following are some recent WWE live attendance figures:

March 12th in Largo, FL for NXT drew a sellout of 500 fans
March 13th in Abbotsford, BC drew 5,000 fans (Roman Reigns tour)
March 14th in Seattle drew 6,000 fans (Roman Reigns tour)
March 14th in Milwaukee drew 7,000 fans (John Cena tour)
March 14th in Citrus Springs, FL for NXT drew 225 fans
March 15th in Portland drew 3,200 fans (Roman Reigns tour)

WWE Still Believes The Briscoes Are Signing With Them, Update On Jey Uso’s Injury

29

– Despite previous reports to the contrary, WWE is still of the belief that top Ring Of Honor stars The Briscoes will be signing with them and will be heading to NXT by mid-summer.

– As previously reported, Jey Uso is currently out of action with a shoulder injury. Due to the injury, Uso’s status for WrestleMania 31 will not be known until he is evaluated by WWE doctors, which is expected to happen later this week. The injury occurred when Xavier Woods landed awkwardly on Uso while executing a somersault plancha during a recent match on WWE SmackDown.

WWE Only Allows Certain Amount Of Pro-Daniel Bryan Signs At Monday’s RAW?

25

The situation involving fans dressed as WWE legends being forced to change their clothes during the show apparently wasn’t the only incident at Monday’s edition of RAW in Des Moines, Iowa.

In addition to the clothes-changing incident, security in the arena was also confiscating pro-Daniel Bryan signs at the door as fans filtered into the Wells Fargo Arena.

According to two fans at the show on Monday who confirmed the reports, security reportedly told them that there were already enough fans with pro-Daniel Bryan signs that had entered the arena.

It’s worth pointing out, however, that sources within WWE claim they did not know about this issue, and did not believe it to be true.

Backstage News Regarding WrestleMania 31 Attendance & SummerSlam Ticket Scalpers

4

There are approximately 4,400 tickets remaining on the Stubhub website for WrestleMania 31. Front row seats are going for $13,000, while seats in the third row are selling for $3,000. Those prices will likely drop as WrestleMania 31 draws closer.

While WWE is expected to sell under 65,000 or 60,000 tickets, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California is expected to be full on the evening of the event. The company is apparently not worried at all about selling tickets, as they’ve been very strict in terms of the number of comps they have been giving out.

Additionally, new seats are being added in the Northeast corner of the building, so the maximum capacity on the night of the event could reach close to 70,000 fans. Those same extra seats will be added to the 2016 Super Bowl in the same venue as well.

WWE generally exaggerates their attendance for big events like WrestleMania, and if they end up making up a number larger than 76,000 for this year’s show, then that will likely be more than the real number that the NFL will announce for next year’s Super Bowl.

Regarding tickets for WWE SummerSlam this year selling so rapidly, one of the main reasons is ticket scalpers. Scalpers expect eventual sellouts and try to beat the general public to the tickets, which appears to be the case for SummerSlam. In fact, there are 3,000 of the 12,000 tickets for SummerSlam already available on the Stubhub website alone.

Backstage Update: WWE Hoping To Re-Sign Brock Lesnar Next Monday

53

At the WWE SmackDown television taping on Tuesday night, there were rumors going around the WWE dressing room that WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar was close to signing a new deal with the company.

According to the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the rumors are premature, as there is still no definitive word as to what Lesnar is going to do once his current WWE deal expires after WrestleMania 31.

As of Wednesday, the situation between Lesnar and WWE is reportedly the same as it has been for a few weeks now, dating back to the big backstage blow-up between Lesnar and Vince McMahon at a WWE RAW taping. Whatever caused that blow-up at RAW has yet to be settled and nothing has changed as of yet.

WWE officials are still negotiating with Lesnar and are hopeful to get him to sign a new contract, specifically targeting next Monday’s RAW in Los Angeles, California as the place and time they hope to see it happen.

WWE Announces Press Conference For March 30th To Reveal WWE Network Subscriber Number

3

WWE announced on Wednesday that a press conference will be held at Noon on March 30th to discuss the progress of the WWE Network, including an update on the latest official subscriber count.

The expectation is that in the days following the WrestleMania 31 pay-per-view, the subscriber number will likely be the highest of the year, so it makes sense to release that figure as soon as possible.

Also planned for the press conference are some announcements regarding the WWE Network program schedule.

Vince McMahon and WWE executive George Barrios will be hosting the conference, which we will have coverage of on 3/30.

Devon Talks Retirement, Today’s Wrestlers Not Respecting Veterans & More

6

Former WWE, TNA and ECW star Devon recently spoke with Brian Fritz of the Between The Ropes podcast. You can listen to the full interview at BetweenTheRopes.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Retirement:

“I haven’t really contemplated retirement. I’ve contemplated in terms of leaving certain companies along the way but never really thought about retiring. I think with everything that Bubba and I have done and accomplished and then getting in the best possible shape we could be in, right now retirement hasn’t entered my head. I know helping the younger guys and helping the new generation, in other words, pass the torch that has been said a lot about me and Bubba. That’s what we want to do. It’s only fair that we do that. It was done for us. The old timers back in the day when we were coming up in the business helped us along the way and showed us the ropes. It’s only fitting that we do the same for the younger generation today.”

Today’s Wrestlers Lacking Respect For Veterans:

“There’s a lot of guys that I’ve seen in the locker room whether it be in independents or whether it be in TNA — and I don’t know about WWE because I haven’t been there in almost ten years — but a lot of these locker rooms that I go in, the respect level for the veterans is really thrown out the window for some of these guys because they have been brought up the wrong way. You’ve got a guy who opens up a school who’s never been anywhere and has no name value, no nothing but yet can tell somebody how to make it in WWE or TNA but yet they’ve never made it. It’s like how do you go to a guy like that to teach you how to wrestle when he’s never made it and he’s still trying to make it? If he’s never made it in that aspect, that means something’s wrong. And to see how so many of these guys come from schools like that and how there’s no level of respect for the veterans of the business in general, it saddens me because Bubba made a point one time and I definitely agree with him that our generation is the last of the old school generation. We’re the last ones that really know about respect and honor.”

How Close He’s Come To Returning To WWE:

“How close have I been? I don’t know. I’ve been with TNA for what, ten years, since I left WWE after being there and having a successful run. Who knows? Anybody who been there one time and made that company money and done things for them, anyone’s possible to come back. Maybe on day Bubba and I will be back. I think there will always be interest in Bubba and I on going back home. Regardless of where we’ve been, WWE is our home. We might have been away from them for ten years but the WWE and the WWE Universe will always be the Dudley Boys home. When you look at us, whatever company we’re in whether TNA, Japan or what have you it’s still the Dudley Boys from WWE. We still have that stamp. Do I think one day it will still happen? Sure, anything’s possible. We would be definitely open to the WWE to want to talk and do business and help the younger talent and really help pass the torch because that’s what this is all about now.”

Brie Bella Speaks On Living Life As An Identical Twin, Appearing On Old Reality TV Show

6

WWE Diva and Total Divas star Brie Bella recently spoke with AZ Central to promote the upcoming WWE live event in Phoenix, Arizona this weekend. Below are highlights from the interview.

On starring on “Meet My Folks” and what attracted her to reality television: “Ever since we were little — and this goes from when we were babies through high school — everyone always said, ‘The twins are so entertaining. Just sit down with them for five minutes, and you will see so much happen. They will fight, they will laugh, they will love each other, and then they will tell each other off.’

Reality TV started becoming big when I was in college, around 2002. I remember everyone kept saying, “Man, you guys should do reality.” And I was always like, “I don’t know.” But “Meet My Folks” wanted my sister and I to go on, and hey, when you’re 19 and they want to give you a paycheck to have some fun? My sister and I were all about it. And sure enough, we felt so comfortable in front of the cameras.

I’ll never forget that night. Trista (Rehn) was the first “Bachelorette” (on ABC), and our “Meet My Folks,” the twin special, beat her in viewers that night, which was a really big deal. And ever since then, my sister and I did reality.”

On living life as an identical twin: “All the weird crazy things people say, like twins can read each other minds, they can feel each other’s feelings, it’s all true. We can have complete conversations with our eyes. When I look at my sister, I’m like, this has been a 31-year marriage. We’re like this old couple who bickers. We love each other, but we’ll get annoyed if the other one chews their gum weird. But we do have a special bond, and I think that’s one reason as a tag team for WWE we’ve done so well, because we know each other so well. It’s crazy, our chemistry not just outside the ring but in the ring. Blood is thicker than water, so the fact that I have my sister always with me, it’s like you always have someone who’s your best friend and always have someone who has your back. You can always trust your family, and I’m lucky to have that.”

On her fitness regimen: “Every day, I make sure I do something active, whether I only have time to do a 20-minute walk or pull up a 15-minute barre video to going in the gym for two hours. But I am one of those people, I truly believe to always change up your workouts, because I can get bored very easy, which will then turn me off from working out. So I’m obsessed with Pilates, yoga, I do barre class, and then I’ll do a little bit of weight lifting. And then also stretching every day. It is so important. I think people forget, because sometimes when you’re done with a workout, you’re like, “OK, I’m done.” But if you can stretch every day, you will be so grateful later on in life.”
