  • Mark Henry Talks About Racism In WWE, Turning Down A Racist Gimmick Idea

    74

Mark Henry and WWE Hall Of Famer Koko B. Ware appeared on Huff Post Live recently and spoke about the topic of racism in WWE.

Henry spoke about WWE’s “Silverback” gimmick for him back in 2007, saying “a lot of people remember the Silverback thing. Honestly, I could not do it. I told them: ‘I can’t do that. I got two little black kids at home.'”

Henry defended WWE in terms of being a racist company, basically saying that the company and its’ writers have no racist tendencies towards their talent. “Black culture, we dance and sing. We’re entertainers,” said Henry. “James Brown said it best: the things we are make people want to be like us.”

  • Chris Jericho Puts Over WWE’s Music Composer, Talks About Entertaining The Masses

    28

The following are highlights of a new Miami Herald interview with Chris Jericho:

Entertaining the masses with his talents: “I think after a while people don’t really give a %$#@ what it is [else] that you’re doing. When I’m wrestling, I’m in wrestling mode. When I’m on stage with Fozzy, I’m in Fozzy mode. They’re two separate things, and it’s cool that I do both. I think a lot of people think it’s cool and can understand that I’m good at both. I don’t listen to negative people or care about negative people or worry about negative people. I just worry about doing the best I can do with whatever projects I decide to do.”

Similarities between music and wrestling: “There’s a lot of similarities between the two. They’re both very high energy, aggressive forms of entertainment, very dependent on the reactions you get from the crowd. If the crowd is excited, it makes for a better show — both in wrestling and with Fozzy. So you get a lot of crossover because there is that certain vibe in both. Certainly WWE superstars are like rock stars — larger than life, over the top personalities — and that’s what you’re always looking for in rock-n-roll. Sometimes you get it, and sometimes you don’t, and sometimes you get that in wrestling, and sometimes you don’t. Especially when you go to a WWE show with all the fire [and loud noise] and pyrotechnic, a lot of times it’s more than a rock show, than a rock show you might see. There is a common ground between the two.”

WWE’s Jim Johnston, who composes theme songs: “[Jim Johnston] does a great job at what he does. He really finds the inner core, the inner seed of what the person’s personality is, of what the character’s personality is, and really latches on to that. It always amazes me to see what he comes up with for guys who have been around for years, for guys who are just starting..He’s definitely an invaluable member of the WWE’s team for sure.”

  • Roman Reigns Speaks On His Family’s Legacy, Returning To His Hometown & More

    43

The following are highlights of a new interview with Roman Reigns:

Returning home in the main event: “It’s a little bit nerve wracking to be honest. Fortunately, the last time we were in Pensacola, we were in The Shield. It felt like a pay-per-view out there. It means so much to me being home. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in that Civic Center — watching Disney on Ice, the Ice Pilots, Arena Football. To get in there, especially as a singles competitor, to be in the main event is unbelievable. No matter what, you want to close the show properly. Being in my hometown of Pensacola, it puts even more weight on my shoulder to go out there and perform at the highest level.”

Following in the footsteps of family members in wrestling: “I don’t look at it as being tough. I take it as more of a responsibility. I feel like I’ve always been in that position in my family, to raise the bar, to keep our legacy strong. It’s more of a challenge. It’s not something that I let stress me out. I stay within myself and never forget where I came from.”

Putting on the best show possible: “I always feel I need to have my best performance possible. You never know when it’s the last time in the ring. I was extremely tough on myself the last time I was in Pensacola. I think I’m a smarter performer now. For me, it’s about doing what I do at the highest level and putting on the best show possible. And that’s what I plan on doing.”

  • Dean Ambrose On His Feud With Seth Rollins, His Infamous Nickname & More

    43

Dean Ambrose recently appeared on the local CBS Radio affiliate in Boston to promote this Sunday’s WWE Battleground pay-per-view.

During the discussion, Ambrose spoke about an infamous internet nickname he is known for, “titty-master,” which he obtained after writing the words on his wrist at a WWE live event last year.

Regarding the nickname, Ambrose said “that’s why I don’t do the internet very much.”

The former Shield member also spoke about his feud with Seth Rollins. “I don’t think this is going to be the end,” said Ambrose. “I think me and him are going to be at each other’s throats and tearing it up and having spectacular matches for years and years down the line, but you’re going to get to see the first one this Sunday.”

  • VIDEO: Bray Wyatt Talks About His Character, The Past Year In WWE & More

    11

The following are highlights of a new interview with Bray Wyatt:

On the last year since he debuted with the WWE: “It’s been a whirlwind. I always expected to be successful. I don’t remember being a child and plan on doing anything but what I’m doing right now. I was kind of born to do this and this past year has been rewarding. I like the grind of things. I like to keep my ear to the ground and just keep moving forward. It’s been crazy but I expect it to get much crazier as it continues with my career and my growth and a unit especially.”

On Bray Wyatt is really him just amplied: “Right. 100%. I couldn’t create something if I didn’t feel it. When I say things, when I speak on television, I’m not making stuff up. I’m not like sitting in the back with a notepad thinking “maybe this will make them think I’m crazy”. That’s how I really am you know? My views on this and that, which I really don’t want to delve into, but my views are that of the real me. There is no character. I think that’s the biggest mistake people think when they approach me, they think “you’re some character you know, I love the character you play”. You don’t really know who I am.”

  • Sami Zayn On Feedback He Received From Triple H, Talks KENTA Signing, Cesaro

    14

The following are highlights of a new interview with NXT star Sami Zayn:

On feedback from Triple H after his match with Cesaro at “Arrival”: “It was awesome. If I’m being honest again, actually the first time that I got that kind of feedback from HHH was actually the two out of three falls match (with Cesaro), which had been about a year, nine months prior to the Arrival match. So we had this match, now has gotten a lot of talk, buzz or whatever it is. As I was in the ring and the crowd was like just going nuts, giving us this standing ovation, which was so cool. And as I was on my back, out of the corner of my eye, I kinda saw the replaying some of the highlights of the match and the crowd with each replay started getting louder and louder to the point by the time they were replaying the finish, it was another standing ovation. So it was actually one of the most incredible moments of my career. Just to lay flat on my back and just hear them continually getting louder way after the match. And they (crowd) start chanting match of the year, match of the year and I haven’t told anybody this on camera or anything like this. I really didn’t know how that reaction was going to go over. At this point, I was fairly new to the WWE system. I didn’t know if I overextended myself, if we had done more than they wanted, I don’t know. I really didn’t know. And then we came back and I had no idea what to expect, I really didn’t. I thought I’d get chewed out over like what the hell are you doing out there? I really didn’t know. And I got back there and HHH was the first one to pull us aside. He said that was awesome. He gave us a very candid speech. That was the first time I got insight into his mind and the way his mind works. I was so happy because yes, its not gunna be this like, I have my vision. the office has their vision. It was this guy who likes good stuff and he appreciates good stuff. And it was an amazing experience and amazing thing validated by a guy who is not only your boss, but as one of the most accomplished and greatest professional wrestlers/WWE superstars of all time. It was really cool to have him on your good side for sure.”

On KENTA signing with the company and training soon at the Performance Center: “I’m very excited. There’s a lot of good talent coming in, a lot of my kind of guys, world traveled, workrate, nose to the grindstone, gritty sort of passionate guys, which is what I personally believe in. Its great to see these guys get an opportunity. KENTA’s just been busting his butt for so long and killing it for so long. Its great to see him get an opportunity like this. I am really looking forward to hopefully wrestling him because I actually never have. I was supposed to wrestle him once, but he went down with a knee injury. I teamed with him a couple of times, but I’ve never actually had a one on one match with him. I look forward to that opportunity.”

  • Charlotte Talks About Her MSG Debut, NXT Takeover, Ric Flair & More

    7

The following are highlights of a new Between The Ropes interview with NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte:

On sharing the moment with her father Ric Flair when she won the NXT Women’s Title at Takeover: “I really don’t have the words. It was so special. I mean, to follow in my dad’s footsteps. I think if anyone’s followed my father’s career, they truly know how passionate he is about sports entertainment. And to be able to carry on his legacy in my own way and to win the NXT Women’s Championship, it just meant the world to me. I know how much his legacy, hard work, sacrifice and his love for his fans and the WWE Universe that he put into them. And to know that I’m representing his brand that he worked on for so long means a lot to me. So I just want to do it justice and I felt that pressure that night. I think it went really well. No matter how grand the stage is, he be proud of me. But to win my first title with there, was special.”

On her WWE debut at Madison Square Garden this past weekend: “Heck of a way to start your main roster debut. It was amazing. While Sasha Banks and I started pretty much at the same time and to have her tagging with me was special in itself. But Madison Squarer Garden has so much history and tradition. And to walk out there and know that I was making history within that building and having my dad there and being on the same card as him, that’s what made it special. Like his name was on there, I was on there. But facing Natalya again, that was pretty awesome too. That was the first time I faced her since Takeover and obviously going up against Nikki (Bella) too. Also, what was so cool, they (the crowd) knew who we were. Walking out there playing our little package and knowing us made you feel like even more like a superstar like NXT means business.”

  • WWE Network: Ahead of Its Time?

    64

With the launch of the WWE Network, Vince McMahon took a somewhat revolutionary approach to delivering content by almost completely circumventing cable providers. There has been major backlash from the ostracized cable providers, with Dish and DirecTV choosing to cut WWE pay-per-views as a sign of defiance due to lost revenue.

One would assume that the WWE would be raking in the dough by cutting ties with middlemen cable providers. That has not been the case thus far, however. Instead, recent reports indicate that the company has lost between 45 and 53 million dollars this year alone.

The WWE Network is an amazing product, but can it lure enough subscribers to be a success?
The WWE Network is an amazing product, but can it lure enough subscribers to be a success?

The recent budget woes have resulted in the WWE instituting a number of budget cutting measures. Most importantly, a number of WWE talents have been terminated, including Josh Matthews, Brodus Clay, and Drew McIntyre. Additionally, it seems as if the WWE is trying to nickel and dime its superstars in an attempt to save money by adopting a policy that fines athletes for not appearing in professional attire or showing up to the arena a minute late.

In order to simply break even, the WWE has said they would need at least 1 million Network subscribers. The press release after WrestleMania reported that there are 667,287 subscribers, far short of the goal of 1 million. There is even speculation that the next press release could see fewer subscribers, due to the fact that the WWE cancels accounts that do not have sufficient funds at the time of withdraw.

While that seems unlikely, it does seem like the WWE has a long way to go before breaking even, let alone actually turning a profit. This leads one to wonder if the WWE Network is ahead of its time.

  • Natalya Talks About Learning From HHH, Her NXT Match With Charlotte & More

    4

The following are highlights of a recent Newsday interview with WWE Diva Natalya:

On her recent NXT match with Charlotte: “I’m actually getting goose bumps talking about it. It was about honoring and representing two legacies. And it was the first time my uncle Bret and Ric Flair kind of reunited in decades. They haven’t always had a great relationship . . . It connected Bret and Ric in a way they never connected before . . . It was one of the moments I’ll never forget.”

On gaining confidence recently: “Getting a chance to listen to him and hear his ideas and his philosophies, it’s such a great asset . . . You can make all the suggestions in the world but you cannot teach experience. I’ve actually learned how to be a ring general by working with people who have less experience that me, because I’m feeding off their hunger.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: Sting’s Cryptic Tweet, Daniel Bryan’s Hiatus, Roman Reigns

    4

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Sting’s 7-4-14 Tweet: “Lots of @Sting speculation as to what 7-14-14 means but to spill the beans, if I knew, would be to spoil a cool surprise. Needless to say, I’d suggest, without leading anyone astray, that watching RAW Monday night would be judicious.”

Daniel Bryan’s Status: “Not sure what to believe or not to believe regarding the physical status of Daniel Bryan but most of what I’m reading isn’t positive. Often times a surgery will reveal other issues and it seems that may have been the case here. The bottom line to this entire matter is to get Bryan healthy and, above all else, not to rush him back into the ring. I feel confident that WWE would never allow this to occur but certainly in the territory days of years gone by promoters would want the talents to get back in the ring ASAP. Plus, the talents themselves would push the envelope because most of them did not have guaranteed contracts and if they did not work they did not get paid notwithstanding they paid their own medical bills. Times have changed much for the better in those areas.”

How Bryan’s Absence Affects Roman Reigns: “With Bryan out TFN, it’s also imperative that WWE be cautious in how they market, promote and build Roman Reigns. Overexposure can result in a backlash neither of which the WWE or Reigns needs at this point in his development. Does Roman Reigns or any other WWE talent need to be on virtually every TV show that is produced such as RAW and Smackdown? Absolutely, not.”

Gail Kim vs. Angelina Love: “Wanted to mention last week that I really enjoyed the @GailKimITSME vs. Angela Love match last Thursday on @ImpactWrestlilng on @SpikeTV. The ladies worked hard, I knew who the villain and the heroine were, and they had the time to tell a viable story. This stuff isn’t rocket science folks. However, we seem to be living in an age where pro wrestling is more ‘over thought’ these days than ever before and we can all see the results of that mindset.”

    12

J.J. Dillon Speaks On How The Four Horsemen Were Formed, Ric Flair’s Work Ethic

The following are highlights of a new WGD Weekly interview with J.J. Dillon:

How the idea for the Four Horsemen first came about: “It wasn’t really an idea that had been laid out in advance…Baby Doll was there with Tully and there was the deal where I orchestrated the thing and got Tully away from Baby Doll…Dusty came to her aid…and that’s how I’m with Tully. Flair was the World Champion, Ole and Arn were the World Tag Team Champions, and Tully was the National Champion, and he was the only one I was managing…One of the weeks, I don’t know if it was short on time or what, somebody said, ‘You guys have all the belts, all of you go out together. Just tell everybody where you’re gonna be this week. That’s what happened.

“Flair went out with the World Title over his shoulder, Ole and Arn went out with the tag belts, Tully went out with his belt, and I went out because I managed Tully. As the mike passed around, Arn Anderson took it and said, ‘You people at home take a good hard look at your screen, we’re all champions. Never have so few wrecked so much havoc on everyone,’ and he said, ‘you’d have to go back in the history books to the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse,’ and he held up the four fingers. It was just a statement that he threw out there. Then, the next thing you know, when one of us went out there in the studio, it became an interactive thing, holding up the four fingers…it was probably a couple of weeks before Jimmy Crockett said, ‘what is this Four Horsemen thing I keep hearing about.'”

What made the Horsemen such a special group: “I don’t think anyone could’ve ever imagined that it would become as big as it became and last as long as it did. But what happened was, it was a group of guys, who the chemistry was just there. Every night, even though we weren’t always in the same match, actually, I think Arn in his WWE Hall of Fame acceptance speech said, a guy would go out there and basically throw down the gauntlet and challenge the rest of us to go out and top what they had done. So, it was a friendly competition, and the ultimate winner was the fan, because they knew when we were on the card, they were going to see our best effort, every single night, in every town, no matter where it was or the size if the crowd.”

“The differences in traveling and other aspects of the wrestling business in his days on the road as opposed to today : “It was a different time in the business then. Because, we didn’t fly around, we traveled. The guys had opposite dressing rooms. The guys that we wrestled against, we had very little contact with, we would rarely even see them. In the small towns, like Amarillo, if you would go to a restaurant and see a guy who would be across the ring from you, you would go somewhere else. It was just how it was in those days, and I think that has a lot to do with why the fans had a lot more respect for us, because we commanded that respect by not giving them any reason to disrespect us. In the middle of the night on those long trips, we would pass each other, and here we would be on a stretch of highway between Colorado Springs and Albuquerque in the middle of the night. We would flash our lights to pull over, we’d get out and have a beer together and a hug and nobody would ever know. But it was the camaraderie driving in the car where more ideas were created that drew tremendous amounts of money…It was the kind of things we did, like that, and we drew money, and the business was fun…The trips were long, it was physically demanding…it was just pride that the people in the business and gave up their bodies for it had.”

Ric Flair’s work ethic earning him the respect of the fans: “Flair would give you the same effort if it was an arena with a crowd the size of 25,000 people or if we went to somewhere where the television show that week didn’t air because there was a problem and there was only 500 people. You would think, here is a night where he is just going to go through the motions, but that just was not Ric. He would give you the same match and that is what the fans came to respect.”

How he lived out his dream to wrestle at Madison Square Garden in 1984: “Eddie Graham came into the office one day, which he would often do. I was working in the office and I told him how I had dreamed of one day going to wrestle in the Garden, too. This was 1984, I broke in in 1971…father time was not on my side. Eddie never said anything, he got up and walked out. A day or so went by, and he walked back in and said, ‘you are booked on the next card at Madison Square Garden. They are going to send you a plane ticket, you will be booked on the card, you will fly up and then fly back. After our conversation, he called Vince McMahon, Sr., who remembered me and at the time, it was right when Vince, Jr. was declaring war on everybody and taking over. The father was very sick at the time with lung cancer…I called him to thank him…he told me that he remembered me fondly and that he heard I had this dream and he wanted to make it happen. I still have a copy of the program on my wall…April 23, 1984… they juggled the card around and I ended up wrestling Tito Santana, who was the Intercontinental champion at the time.”
