Curt Hawkins Says WWE’s Treatment Of Zack Ryder “Broke The Spirit” Of The Locker Room

23

Former WWE Superstar Brian Myers (Curt Hawkins) was a guest on The LAW: Live Audio Wrestling this week. During an interview with host John Pollock, Myers explained how WWE’s treatment of Zack “broke the spirit” of the locker room:

“The worst part of that whole thing is that it really kind of broke the spirit of the locker room. For years, we were told in all these pep talks that there’s a brass ring, you’ve gotta reach for it and it’s there for the taking if you work hard enough and get yourself over. And he did it; he defied the odds and actually does it, and all the boys are rooting for him, like ‘Oh wow, this is cool as sh*t. This has never been done before.’ He got over without the office, without TV time.

It was pretty mind-blowing. And then they did just crush it and take it all away from him. To me, I felt the example that set for the rest of the boys was pretty brutal, because then it’s like it almost feels hopeless. It’s like, you’re not going to get pushed unless they pick you to get pushed, and that’s kind of it. I thought, above all, that message they sent to the boys was the worst part.

They crushed the spirits of a lot of people, like ‘Okay, so my hard work here isn’t going to pay off, huh?'”

– Brittany vs. Madison Rayne is next. Fans chanted “this match sucks” before it even began. Madison got the win.

– Jeff Hardy vs. Bobby Lashley for the World Heavyweight Title is next. At one point, Hardy did a swanton onto the steel steps outside of the ring. The match barely went 10 minutes and Lashley retained. The fans were very upset at Lashley winning and gave him a lot of heat.

TNA Holds Big Meeting, Hardy Boyz vs. The Wolves Announced For NYC Taping

– TNA’s official website is reporting that the company’s Board of Directors called an “emergency meeting” in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday morning. Neither TNA President Dixie Carter or Director of Wrestling Operations were in attendance at the meeting.

“Speculation began this morning that something major was in the works and, sources revealed, that a board meeting was called early this morning – with many top executives being unreachable all day.

This is not the first emergency meeting of the past two weeks. As we revealed earlier this week, the TNA Board of Directors has held several meetings since Slammiversary – one of which resulted in the return of the 6-sided ring.”

– TNA has announced that Thursday night’s Impact Wrestling tapings from New York City will feature Matt and Jeff Hardy vs. The Wolves, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards:

Update On AJ Lee’s WWE Return, Pregnancy Rumors, Recent Photo With CM Punk

37

Former WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee was reportedly expected back on WWE television by this summer after asking to take time off from the company shortly after WrestleMania XXX. According to reports, nobody within WWE has said a word about Lee as of late, despite the fact that she was originally expected back by this point.

As far as the rumors of her being pregnant are concerned, she sure doesn’t look like she’s with baby. This photo of AJ and CM Punk surfaced online this week – with both of them wearing their wedding rings:

Paul Heyman Explains What Led CM Punk To Leave WWE

96

Paul Heyman, “The One Behind The One In 21-1″, appeared with WWE Hall of Famer Adam “Edge” Copeland on this week’s Talk Is Jericho podcast. During the interview, Heyman spoke at length about why he thinks CM Punk decided to leave WWE.

“He was unhappy. He had enough. He couldn’t take it anymore. A year before he walked these was daily conversations of, ‘I don’t think I’m going to be able to take this. I’m not sure how much longer I’m going to be here. I don’t know how much longer it’s going to be before I just decide to go home.’ I’m surprised it lasted that long.”

Heyman says that Punk was no longer able to “find the passion” that he needed to keep up with the grind of being a WWE Superstar – which is what ultimately led to his departure.

“Every day with him was an exercise in him finding the balance to simply continue on and find the passion he needed that he to do it. And I think what happened was he walked in the day after the Royal Rumble and he couldn’t find that passion. He couldn’t convince himself or persuade himself, ‘OK, whether I’m happy or not this is about the performance, my legacy. It’s about I take pride in what I do. And whether I’m happy or unhappy when I go out there I’m going to be the best CM Punk I can be.’ And I think somewhere during that day he couldn’t find that.”

  • Jonathan Coachman Not Returning To WWE As Originally Expected

    8

Earlier this year, former WWE announcer Jonathan Coachman, who now works for ESPN, teased that he would be returning to the company in some capacity, even hinting at some potential involvement in this year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view.

It appears that the talks between Coachman and WWE have fallen through. Coachman was originally expected to do some work for the WWE Network as a side-project, as he planned to keep his ESPN gig the entire time. Apparently now that will not be happening.

Additionally, a fan recently told Coachman on Twitter that everyone wants him back in WWE. “The Coach” replied by saying, “Everyone except WWE.”

  • Curt Hawkins Talks WWE Release, Helping The Rock With His Comeback

    5

The following are highlights of a recent Live Audio Wrestling interview with Curt Hawkins:

On WWE release: “I was with the WWE for eight and a half years, and I saw so many guys get let go and just sit around and feel sorry for themselves, and I feel like nothing good comes of that. To me, wrestling is wrestling. It’s what I love to do. If I was able to do it that weekend, why wouldn’t I? I was thrilled at the idea that…you know, originally I would be sitting home as a WWE employee like I was doing, collecting a check but not really having any fun. So I was like, “Woo! Alright, sweet.” Hit the ground running, you know?

For one, it’s been like a weight has been lifted. It was just going nowhere, and I sensed that, and I’m thrilled to be back being my own boss and actively wrestling every weekend, which is really just what I want to do. That’s all I can ask for. I’m a desperate hopeless romantic for pro wrestling since I was five years old, I just love it. I’m happiest in the ring; I don’t care whose ring it is or who owns it, I just want to be in there performing and I’m happy. And I know I’m a sucker in that sense, because it’s a business, but that’s what makes me happy and that’s the truth. What really happened, in my opinion, is when I got hurt in late summer 2012 – I tore my PCL and meniscus, and that was the first time I had to actively stop. I had to have surgery. Ever since then, I never was put on a full road schedule again. It was almost a year and a half of just sitting home and they’d randomly call me for something. It was just bizarre, it never got going again. I think a lot of it was a cost-cutting thing to keep a lot of talent off the road because they weren’t going to be used.”

On working with The Rock for his comeback matches: “That started for his comeback match, the Survivor Series match in 2011. I got a call from John Laurinaitis one afternoon, and that’s never a good thing, so I’m like “Oh sh*t, what could this be about?” It was a conference call with me and Joe Hennig on the line, and he basically explained that Rock needs guy to train with to get ready for his matches, and he’s not gonna be at every TV and whatnot. We were basically like his punching bags for whatever he wants to do, whenever he wants to do it. It wound up being incredible. Basically, I could be at home at any point and someone from the office would call me and say, “Hey, Dwayne wants to train tomorrow in Miami, we’ll send you the information” and WWE would basically set up a ring, they’d send a ring crew guy and a ref. They’d set up a ring in a warehouse near wherever he was filming. We did it in Miami, we did it in New Orleans. At the drop of a hat, my daily commute would be Miami and back in one day just to get a workout in with Dwayne. It was a blast. Honestly, he could not have been cooler. From jump street, he was the coolest guy.”

Vince Russo Says Vince McMahon Has Changed, Talks Booking Of Bray Wyatt

    30

The following are highlights of a recent Wrestle Reaction interview with Vince Russo:

On thoughts of Vince McMahon’s loss of competitive edge: “In my opinion, the Vince McMahon before the purchase of WCW, was a different Vince McMahon. The Vince McMahon I worked for was a freakin killer. He would do anything to be number one. He would slice your throat, rip your eyes out, it didn’t matter. When I went back and met with him in 2002, he was a different guy. And I remember, I even said to Vince, where is your bravado? What happened? And I think once he was able to buy WCW, which I think was a tremendous goal of his, his ultimate goal. Everybody knows the history between him and Ted Turner. When that happened, there was nothing else. What else could Vince possibly combat and defeat in his life?! It’s like when a team wins the World Series, the next year they suck. Once you obtain that achievement, it’s downhill from there. I really think Vince lost a lot of his competitive edge when he bought WCW. Maybe add on 11 mins.”

On his reaction to Raw’s four-on-three main event booking: “The hottest guy they’ve got on that show right now is Bray Wyatt. You’ve got a tag team match of 7 guys out there. So, first of all, you’re making Bray Wyatt 1 of 7 guys. So now, all of a sudden, he’s like everyone else. He’s not special anymore. Then, to not give him the last entrance, to introduce Del Rio after him? I’m sorry bro but there’s no excuse for that. That’s creative 101. How do you not bring this guy out last? You kill the lights, have that effect in the crowd with all the (cell phone) lights, have the guy do something devastating off the bat. Where’s Vince on this? Where’s the great filter he was?”

On his thoughts on people blaming him for the fall of WCW: “Here’s what people don’t understand, and this is a shoot. The thing that always aggravates the crap out of me is that “I’m always making excuses for WCW”. When Ed (Ferrara) and I first started, the rating before that was a 2.9. 3 months later it was a 3.6. So right there, what am I making excuses for? We walked into a 2.9. When they decided they wanted a change, it was a 3.6. I don’t know what I’m making an excuse for. I was there for only 2 weeks, and that merger (AOL Time Warner) came down. 2 weeks I was on the job! And as soon as that merger came down, little by little, you knew that these guys did not want to be in the wrestling business. You knew where this thing was headed. We could’ve gotten the rating up to a 4, 5, or 6, it wouldn’t have mattered. They just didn’t want to be in the wrestling business. To blame me, or to blame Eric (Bischoff), or to blame Hulk (Hogan), it’s so ridiculous!”

Fans voted and the TNA Board of Directors listened! Beginning this week at our New York tapings, the 6-sided ring returns to IMPACT Wrestling!

In-Ring Segment: Stephanie McMahon & Vickie Guerrero

Michael Cole opens up this week’s show, which is the 1,100th episode of WWE RAW and the “go-home” show for this Sunday’s Money In The Bank pay-per-view. From there, Justin Roberts introduces “one of the principal owners of WWE,” Stephanie McMahon. Highlights are shown of Roman Reigns qualifying for the Money In The Bank ladder match for the title at last week’s RAW.

Stephanie addresses getting sick due to Vickie Guerrero’s cup of coffee last week. She demands Vickie come out and face the consequences. Vickie apologizes for Steph getting sick and says Roman Reigns is the person who spiked her coffee. Steph addresses the fact that Triple H made sure to tell Vickie not to allow Reigns to get into the Money In The Bank ladder match, and she did.

Vickie apologizes for that as well and promises that it won’t happen again. Steph says Vickie’s been riding the coattails of her late husband for nine years. The fans all break into a huge “Eddie! Eddie!” chant. Steph gets ready to tell Vickie she’s fired, but Vickie cuts her off by apologizing again. She says she’ll beg. She gets on her knees and begs. Steph tells her to get up. She says she has two options. She either gets fired tonight or she remains the GM of SmackDown if she can win her match tonight. Vickie asks who her opponent is. Stephanie says it’s herself. The fans all chant “Yes!” wildly. Vickie says if there’s one name people respect in this industry more than McMahon, it’s Guerrero. She says the one thing Eddie taught her was how to “lie, cheat and steal.” She accepts Steph’s challenge and walks off.

    What’s On Tap For Tonight

After that in-ring segment, it is announced that Triple H will reveal the participants in the second Money In The Bank ladder match later tonight. An Intercontinental Championship match between Bad News Barrett and Dolph Ziggler is announced. Also, tonight’s main event is announced. In a four-on-three handicap match, Bray Wyatt, Alberto Del Rio, Randy Orton and Cesaro will take on John Cena, Roman Reigns and Sheamus. We head to commercial.

Jimmy Uso (with Jey Uso) vs. Luke Harper (with Erick Rowan)

When we return from commercial, The Usos make their way down to the ring. Michael Cole hypes up The Usos’ title defense against Luke Harper and Erick Rowan this Sunday at Money In The Bank. After The Usos entrance, some weird music plays and out comes Harper and Rowan to what I guess is their own — very weird — theme music. It sounds like “he’s got the whole world in his hands” on a weird instrument. We’re informed that it will be Luke Harper one-on-one against Jimmy Uso.

Harper hits a surprising dropkick to jump off into an early lead over Uso. Uso tries to fight back, but Harper cuts him off and continues to deliver some punishment. Harper, by the way, has a bit of a beard-cut and/or haircut. Something looks slightly different about him.

About two-to-three minutes into the match, Rowan causes a distraction at ringside, allowing Harper to hit his clothesline from hell on Uso for the pin fall victory.

    Winner: Luke Harper

Jey Uso (with Jimmy Uso) vs. Erick Rowan (with Luke Harper)

After the match, Harper and Rowan begin to head to the back until they hear Jey Uso on the mic challenging them to come back. He specifically calls out Rowan. The two head back to the ring and Jey hits his dive over the top rope and onto both guys on the floor. We head to commercial.

When we return from commercial, Uso and Rowan are already in the ring duking it out in this impromptu one-on-one followup match. Rowan is in control of Uso and the crowd is trying to rally behind Jey. Uso tries coming off the top to turn the offensive tide in the match, but Rowan caught him and slammed him down.

The finish in this one was pretty much the opposite of the previous match, as some distractions on the outside allowed Uso to hit his finisher on Rowan for the 1-2-3.

    Winner: Jey Uso

After The Match: The Action Continues, Bray Speaks

After the match, the action continued as Uso hit a dive onto Harper on the floor. Meanwhile, Rowan starts pummeling the other Uso inside the ring. Harper ends up joining him and both of The Wyatt Family members beat up both of the WWE Tag-Team Champions, both inside and outside of the ring.

They remain inside the ring holding the titles up and then Bray Wyatt appears on the titan tron. Bray talks about what it takes to be a good leader as he congratulates Harper and Rowan on their triumphs. He then switches topics and talks about his own title shot this Sunday at Money In The Bank. We head to commercial.

  • Jim Ross Blog: Brock Lesnar/WWE Title, ROH PPV, Sting On The Ross Report

    26

The following are highlights from the latest Jim Ross blog:

On ROH’s pay-per-view tonight: “Big weekend for ROH and I hope that they are ready for it. Sad that most of us did not see as much promotion on the ‘barker channels’ for ROH’s PPV this weekend as one would have preferred but the hay’s in the barn now. My hope is that ROH can pull this off without any significant production snafus and that the talents slow down, tell logical stories, SELL, have believable conclusions to the matches and give the announcers time to tell a meaningful story and not just try and keep up with the non stop action with wall to wall talking.

“Spot’ management is critical in these shows and the last thing that ROH mgmt should want is for the audience to be ‘numb’ by the main event at the end of the night. I wish everyone involved the best of luck and am hopeful for their success.”

On Brock Lesnar likely winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam: “Anyone that thinks that Brock Lesnar won’t be the WWE World Champion sooner or later this year in WWE isn’t paying attention. Lesnar is WWE’s mot imposing, name worthy, PPV selling superstar who can PASS THE TORCH the best to the next “Big Thing” who seems to be Roman Reigns. As I have stated on my fantasy booking segments on the Ross Report, I fully expect this to go down at WM31.

I’d book Lesnar to headline Summer Slam in Los Angeles and build the card around him. Yes, I’m prepared for the onset of knee jerkers who will say that Brock is part time and that part time talents are efficient. I don’t concur and think that overexposure is running rampant in the wrestling biz and Lesnar certainly isn’t over exposed. The WWE World Champion doesn’t need to be on every TV or at every live event. That concept is antiquated.

If some fans feel that this may be too predicable, then perhaps some are over thinking a pro wrestling storyline that makes sense. Making sense when executing a story line is much more important than doing the unpredictably stupid moves to just ‘surprise’ he audience. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pro wrestling surprise as much as the next fan but NOT at the expense of doing the right thing.”

On Sting appearing on The Ross Report: “I will be talking to @Sting next week for a future Ross Report Podcast that will drop on Tuesday July 15 at 6 pm pacific time. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover and have been friends since he broke into the biz almost 30 years ago. Steve Borden is one of the nicest people in wrestling and his son is the starting tight end at the University of Kentucky.”

  • WWE Money in the Bank: Potential Disappointment

    64

One week from today, WWE’s annual Money in the Bank pay-per-view will be held in Boston, Massachusetts. The event has quickly become one of the most anticipated programs of the year, as it provides exciting action and sets up the storyline for months by allowing a WWE superstar to stalk his prey while holding a contract for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match.

There will be two Money in the Bank ladder matches this year. One will be held for the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and the other will be a traditional contest for a shot at the title. The first contest will feature perennial title contenders such as John Cena, Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Alberto Del Rio, as well as up-and-coming stars such as Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, and Cesaro.

It seems like John Cena is once again the favorite to leave Boston as the champ.
It seems like John Cena is once again the favorite to leave Boston as the champ.

The second ladder match will feature Seth Rollins, with the rest of the lineup to be determined in a series of qualifying matches. Thus far, only three matches have been announced for the entire pay-per-view, and with only one week left before the event, one has to wonder how the WWE will tie everything together in such a brief period.

Other than the two ladder matches, a matchup between the Usos and Luke Harper and Erick Rowan of the Wyatt family is the only confirmed contest on the card. It seems apparent that Dean Ambrose will be one of the participants in the traditional ladder match. Potential options also include those who did not qualify for the championship ladder match, including Bad News Barrett, Dolph Ziggler, and Rob Van Dam.

The two ladder matches will soak up a large portion of the roster, meaning the midcard will have to pick up some slack in order to fill up the three hours of airtime. Rumored contests include Cody Rhodes and Goldust vs. RybAxel, Rusev vs. Big E, and a Divas Championship match involving Paige and all or part of the Funkadactyls.
