Vince Russo Talks Ben Stiller Smoking Weed At RAW, Calls McMahon “Clueless”

25

Vince Russo is now writing a new monthly column for the “What Culture” website, the first of which is now available. His debut effort is called “10 Things You Didn’t Know About Vince Russo.” Below are some highlights.

Ben Stiller Smoking Weed At RAW!

“When we had Ben Stiller on ‘Raw’, I couldn’t find him to produce the pre-tapes we needed. Where was he? How about smoking the WACY-TABACKY with Road Dog and X-Pac behind the trailers!!!

When we finally found Ben, who was promoting “Mystery Men” at the time, he was more than willing to take on a direct blow to the head courtesy of Double J’s, Jeff Jarrett’s guitar. To this day I don’t know if Ben agreed so willingly because he was a “mark”, or simply still high due to his earlier escapades with Sean Waltman and Brian James.”

Getting Threatened By Goldberg And Shawn Michaels

“I, myself, while never having gotten into an “actual” fight while serving my duties of Head Writer at WWE, WCW and TNA, was actually threatened on not one . . . but, two occasions. The first time was by Shawn Michaels after I cut a promo on him to his friend Triple H, for hijacking the WrestleMania 15 main event by getting into Steve Austin’s ear, who then talked Vince McMahon into changing the three way between him, the Rock and Mick Foley into a two-way, leaving Mick the odd man out. And, also a few years later by Bill Goldberg who was not happy when I needed him to do a job to Scott Steiner. Thankfully, I was able to get out of both predicaments completely unscathed.

In another backstage ‘confrontation’ I also once saved Sunny’s life, while putting my own on the line! I actually attempted to stand between Luna, and her target which she INTENDED TO KILL!!! The encounter ended with Luna spearing me into a laundry cart. I swear, Luna could have taken 50% of the MALE roster in a fight during her hey-day.

Luna, bless her heart, had it out for ALL the divas who in her mind weren’t “actually” wrestlers. She despised Sable, and made it very difficult for her to find her way early on. But, if you knew Luna, you loved her, she really did have a big heart. That was just the “old school wrestler” in her that would rear its ugly head from time to time. I’m also proud to say that about three years ago, I pulled “Awesome Kong” off radio personality “Bubba the Love Sponge”.”

Stone Cold Didn’t Want To Do The Beer Truck Angle!

“In the epic scene on “Raw”, when Steve Austin drove a beer truck into the arena, I actually had to talk Steve into it! The Texas Rattlesnake said he just wanted to enter in his pick-up. He didn’t “see” the beer truck. However, once the segment was produced, I think Steve totally understand the impact that it was going to have on the fans for many years to come. It was truly, one of the most classic scenes in the history of “Monday Night Raw”. Thankfully I talked him round, he didn’t go with the pick up, riding in instead with the beer truck, driving his way into wrestling history.”

Vince McMahon Didn’t Have A Clue About Mainstream Publicity

“In the Attitude Era, the hottest thing at that time on MTV was Tom Green. He was light years ahead of the “Reality TV” boom that would follow many years later. I wanted him to be revealed as the man responsible for Raw’s GTV!

Unfortunately, the idea never came into fruition because Vince McMahon had NO IDEA who TOM GREEN was! So instead of “GREEN TV”, it became “GOLDUST TV”.

That wasn’t the first time that Vince wasn’t “exactly” up on his pop culture. A few years later I had shot pre-tapes with “Dancin’” Steve Richards and the Blue Meanie as a parody of the “Blair Witch Project”. We called it the “Blonde Bitch Project”. The idea was to take an entertaining “shot” at Sable who had abruptly decided to leave the company at the time. Once again, the pre-tapes never saw the light of day because Vince had “no idea” what the “Blair Witch Project” was. The pre-tapes, that never aired, were shot ON LOCATION at WWE writer Ed Ferrara’s house… and backyard.

But wait… there are even YET MORE EXAMPLES of Vince McMahon’s little knowledge of the HERE and NOW. Here are a few more gems!

A friend of mine in the Public Relations Department at the WWE, pitched Vince to have legendary Eagles guitarist JOE WALSH perform “Rocky Mountain Way” at WrestleMania XI. Vince respectfully declined because he had never heard of the song, “Rocky Mountain Way”, or its singer/writer JOE WALSH!!!

Last, but not least, upon his arrival in the WWE, we shot a series of vignettes with Val Venus and LEGENDARY porn star Jenna Jameson. We even went as far as even having Jenna BUCK NAKED in Bruce’s Prichard’s Jacuzzi with Val. Upon seeing the footage, Vince decided against airing them, because in his words, Jenna was “ugly”.”

  • The Miz Speaks On Recent WWE Releases, Making It In WWE, The Media & More

    27

The following are highlights of a new interview with The Miz:

Making it in WWE: “I remember coming into the WWE and people saying, ‘you’re not going to last three months in the WWE. You’re going to be fired and you’ll be gone,’ and here I am eight years later still going strong and still having fun and living my dream. It just goes to show that hard work pays off. Those people that told me I wasn’t going to make it three months, now tell me, “You shocked me. You really did and you proved yourself,’ and now I gained the respect of hopefully everybody.”

Being a go-to guy for WWE to represent the company: “That’s one of those things I really take pride in because I love the WWE so much. I think the product is so amazing. It’s such a great entertainment. It’s such a value that everyone should be able to share these kind of moments. I try to display that by doing every kind of radio, print, TV spot I can do. The way I look at it is grassroots. The only way people are going to get to know you is if you’re out there and any media is good media, so I’ll take it all so that everyone knows my name and someday it might pay off or it might not. But the fact is that I get to create relationships and talk to as many as possible about something I’m passionate about.”

The recent WWE releases: “That’s the nature of business. In any business, people get fired and people get hired, so you just got to take it with a grain of salt and know that they’re talented enough as individuals that they’ll be able to do whatever they pursue after the WWE. Everyone would be doing it if it wasn’t tough, so absolutely it’s tough, but it’s something you have to do deal with and you have to go through and you just keep trucking along. I know those people that got released aren’t going to tell me, ‘Well, you should come with me.’ They’re going to be like, ‘Dude, go steal the show, go be as amazing as possible and I’m going to go do my thing and be as amazing as possible.’ I think that’s the mentality.”

Kevin Von Erich Speaks On His Sons Debuting At TNA Slammiversary

    10

WWE Hall Of Famer Kevin Von Erich recently posted the following on his official Facebook account regarding his sons Ross Von Erich and Marshall Von Erich wrestling at this past Sunday night’s TNA Slammiversary pay-per-view:

“What a great feeling to see your sons rise to the occasion. The media blitz before the show, I watched the pressure build, and build, I saw the pressure on the boys faces, I was nervous for them, even though I’ve seen that look on my own face and on my brothers, they were tough, and rather than be fearful, they trusted Him and attacked. That is what a Father wants from his son, to do his best in the face of incredible odds. They had their first real match, the pressure was on and they poured their guts into it. From here they will grow, & experience things that will sharpen them, until they are just like we were. That show was beautiful to me, the response from the fans, awesome, and this first step by my sons is to be the first step into a great new chapter in our lives. They didn’t step away they stepped up, and can only go onward and upward from here. For sure I just had the best Father’s Day a man could ask for.”

  • Batista Interview: Fans Rejecting His Return To WWE, Bryan Being Added To WM30 Main Event

    37

WWE.com has published an exclusive interview with Batista. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Fans Rejecting His Return To WWE: “It was weird. It wasn’t like a normal response. It was almost like a personal attack. It had to do with factors that were not in my control, factors and things that were going on in the company with other people, stuff that really had nothing to do with me. To me, it was a little frustrating, a little confusing, and, you know, I don’t want to say I completely took it personal, but I did somewhat.”

Daniel Bryan Being Added To The WM30 Main Event “Oh, I was super excited. I was super excited, because, you know, we needed that element. Even speaking from a fan’s standpoint, for me, it’s hard to get sucked into a [bad guy vs. bad guy] match. We needed a hero, man, and Daniel Bryan was the biggest hero in the company. I knew this was gonna be good. It’s so much better when the fans have an emotional investment. And they were so emotionally invested in Daniel Bryan, and they were so absorbed in their hatred for me that I knew it was gonna be good stuff.”

Lashing Out At Fans For #Bootista & #Bluetista “I did, especially with the Bluetista thing, because, you know, we had six guys beating the crap out of each other … but people were focused on me wearing blue! I don’t get that, man. I just don’t get it!”

There’s much more to the interview, including his thoughts on Evolution re-forming this year, if he’ll ever return to WWE and his new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Tommy Dreamer Accepts Dixie Carter’s Offer To Appear On Thursday’s Impact

    15

Over the past few weeks, Tommy Dreamer vented on Twitter about TNA Wrestling President Dixie Carter pulling Bully Ray from the the recent House of Hardcore live events.

Dixie called out Dreamer on Twitter and invited the “Innovator of Violence” to appear at Thursday’s live episode of Impact Wrestling from Bethlehem, PA, just an hour away from Philadelphia.

Tommy Dreamer responded, saying that he’ll be there this Thursday:

Report: WWE Head Writer Released, More Production Cuts

    44

WWE head writer Jay Gibson was fired by Vince McMahon over the past few days, according to a report at PWTorch.com. It’s unclear whether he was let go on Friday or over the weekend, but last night’s RAW was the first WWE television show written without Gibson’s input.

RAW appeared to feature a lot more input from Vince McMahon than usual, including his unique brand of humor that included spiked coffee and the ‘payoff’ of Stephanie vomiting all over Vickie Guerrero.

Vince McMahon is spearheading WWE’s effort to reduce payroll costs to offset the recent financial damage done as a result of the WWE Network and the disappointing TV rights fees deal with NBC Universal.

According to WrestleZone.com, WWE is looking to cut $20 million from their budget this year. Aside from WWE releasing 11 people last week, firing their head writer and cutting NXT’s budget, WWE is taking other measures to reduce production costs. For example, elements of Fandango’s entrance and Bad News Barrett’s scissor lift are no longer being used. The truck WWE used to transport those entrances is no longer being used, which will result in the company saving upwards of $250,000 per year.

Vickie Gurrero Leaving WWE, Backstage Reaction To Her RAW Angle, RAW Fallout

    48

    – On RAW, we saw Vickie Gurrero involved in series of skits with The Authority that ultimately saw Stephanie McMahon vomiting all over Vickie. This is setting up Vickie being written off television. We reported exclusively around WrestleMania 30 that Vickie was finishing up with WWE to pursue a career in medical administration. While she extended her time with WWE by a few months, she is in fact leaving the company.

In related Vickie Gurrero news, there were a lot of people rolling their eyes last night at the nature of her skit with Stephanie. Aside from the skit being ‘classic’ Vince McMahon gross-out comedy, many felt the vomit angle was in bad taste, since’s Vickie’s daughter (former NXT Diva Shaul Marie Guerrero) took time off from WWE due to her suffering from an eating disorder.

    – Here’s this week’s RAW Fallout video, featuring a ‘”sick” Stephanie McMahon being escorted out of the building by her husband, Triple H:

The Authority Addresses The WWE Roster

This week’s show opens up live inside the arena in Cleveland, Ohio where we see the entire roster standing at the top of the entrance way. We see the titles hanging above the ring and then Triple H’s “King of Kings” theme plays. Out he comes with Stephanie McMahon and the two walk past the roster and make their way to the ring. On commentary, Michael Cole explains the title situation with Daniel Bryan and the message from Dr. Joseph Maroon from last week airs.

The music fades and Stephanie welcomes everybody to Monday Night RAW. She says they called all of the Superstars and Divas out for a reason. Triple H talks about how everyone fights year-round to prove they are the best and to become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Stephanie uses HHH as an example, calling him the greatest of all-time. Everyone in Cleveland boo’s. Stephanie says everyone on the roster has been represented by a B+ player like Daniel Bryan. The entire arena breaks out in a huge “Yes!” chant. HHH says Bryan’s problem isn’t his ability, it’s his heart. He says Bryan didn’t man-up and act like a fighting champion.

HHH says that standing on that stage right now may very well be the next WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Stephanie says that’s right and it’s because The Authority is all about opportunity. She questions who will join those who have qualified for the Money In The Bank ladder match for the title, as she runs down all of those who have qualified thus far. She says we’ll find out who joins those who have qualified as all of you will compete in a battle royal. HHH says not everyone will participate in the battle royal. He says certain Superstars have refused to evolve and they will not be in the battle royal. He says Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose will not get to be in the battle royal to fight for the opportunity.

He includes John Cena on that list as well, so Cena won’t be able to fight for the chance in the battle royal. He will get a chance to be in the ladder match for the title, but he has to win his match tonight — which is a stretcher match against Kane. Kane’s music plays as an ambulance backs onto the stage and a stretcher is shown being pulled out of the back of it and brought to the ring. Sheamus vs. Bray Wyatt is also announced for later tonight, but up next Seth Rollins vs. Dolph Ziggler will kick things off in the ring for tonight’s RAW. Before that happens, however, Kane’s music hits and he walks out to the top of the stage and stares at the stretcher and ambulance. The announcers hype the Kane vs. Cena stretcher match for later tonight as we head to our first commercial break of the evening.

    Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins

When we return from commercial, Dolph Ziggler’s theme music hits and he makes his way to the ring. The announcers talk about WWE’s partnership with the Special Olympics. Out next is Ziggler’s opponent for tonight, former member of The Shield — Seth Rollins. Rollins has new theme music again, by the way. Highlights of Rollins original turn on The Shield are shown as he makes his way to the ring.

The bell sounds and here we go. Rollins’ ring gear is pretty much the same as when he was in The Shield, only he doesn’t have a vest on, he’s got a skin-tight Nike sleeveless black mesh shirt and black cargo-type pants. The crowd is hot for this one, as they are mixing up a bunch of different chants. Rollins takes the early offensive lead over Ziggler, but Ziggler quickly takes over. The fans unify on a loud “you sold out” chant directed at Rollins.

It isn’t long before Rollins takes over the offense of the match. He has Ziggler grounded as Cole recaps the announcements made by The Authority in the opening segment of tonight’s show. Ziggler lands a picture-perfect dropkick to change the tide of the match. We head to a mid-match commercial on that note.

We’re back from the break and we see Rollins covering Ziggler for a two-count. The announcers plug the action from the break that was available on the WWE App. Meanwhile, Rollins throws Ziggler out of the ring. He goes for a dive through the ropes but Ziggler catches him coming through with a big punch from the floor.

Back in the ring, Ziggler hits the ten-punch spot on Rollins in the corner. Rollins ends up slowing down Ziggler’s momentum with a kick to the back of the head.

Rollins is stalking Ziggler, but Ziggler blasts out of nowhere with a quick-DDT for a close near fall that the fans nearly bought into. Ziggler hits a standing cross-body on Rollins. He goes for the FameAsser but Rollins avoids it. Ziggler jumps on Rollins back with a sleeper-hold out of the blue but Rollins ends up getting him off of him. Ziggler catches Rollins out of nowhere with a FameAsser for a close near fall that the fans did buy into this time. Both guys are down.

A “Let’s go Ziggler” chant spreads throughout the arena in Cleveland as both guys get up. Ziggler rolls Rollins up but Rollins kicks out at two. Rollins does a throwing powerbomb into the turnbuckle on Ziggler. Rollins does another one of those and then hits the Curb Stomp.

    Winner: No Contest

After The Match: Dean Ambrose Attacks, Bad News Barrett Arrives

Before he can pin him, however, Dean Ambrose hits the ring in jeans and a lethar jacket. Ambrose is all over Rollins like wildfire. Rollins ducks out the back door and heads up the ramp. Ambrose gets on the mic and says things between them won’t be over until he gets his hands on him for real.

Ambrose challenges Rollins to come down to the ring. As Rollins goes to head to the ring, Triple H appears on the titan tron. HHH tells Ambrose he’s afraid he’s got some bad news for him. With that said, Bad News Barrett’s theme hits and he makes his way to the ring for what I assume will be a one-on-one match against Ambrose. We head to commercial.

Dean Ambrose vs. Bad News Barrett

When we return from commercial, Ambrose, in blue jeans and a black sleeveless shirt, is pummeling Barrett in the center of the ring. It isn’t long, however, before Bad News is in control of the offense.

Barrett dominates for a couple of minutes until Ambrose fires up and starts making a comeback. Ambrose knocks Barrett out to the floor and then hits a dive on him over the ropes. Ambrose continues his attack on Barrett outside the ring as a “let’s go Ambrose” chant breaks out.

Back in the ring, Ambrose goes to the top rope. Barrett ends up knocking him off and out to the floor. Ambrose sells his shoulder on the ground as Barrett recovers in the ring.

Barrett goes out to the floor to work over Ambrose some more, as he focuses his attack on the injured arm of Ambrose. We head to a mid-match commercial on this note.

We’re back from the break and we see Barrett in control of Ambrose with ease. Barrett continues to work over Ambrose’s shoulder, which was first injured on SmackDown and has been “re-injured” here in this match tonight.

Ambrose starts firing up on offense, all-the-while selling the fact that he’s only got one arm to work with, until Barrett hits the Winds of Change to regain control of the offense.

Ambrose gets control of Barrett but from out of nowhere, Rollins shows up standing on top of the announce table. He hits the ring but Ambrose knocks him down to the flloor. Ambrose throws Barrett out to the floor. Ambrose goes after Rollins, knocking him into the crowd and following him in to keep beating him up. Barrett goes back in the ring and Ambrose gets counted out.

    Winner: Bad News Barrett

After The Match: Dean Ambrose Attacks

After the match, Rollins finally gets away from Ambrose and runs through the crowd and to the back. Ambrose re-enters the ring and beats up Barrett some more. Ambrose’s new solo theme music plays.

The Intercontinental Championship is nice and this is my fourth time having it but as far as I’m concerned, I’m ready to take a step up and become the man in the WWE. That’s where I want to get to and if Bad News Barrett is the vehicle that gets me there then great, but if not I’ll keep plugging away and one day I’ll be Britain’s first WWE World Heavyweight Champion – a certain part of it isn’t up to me and I’ve got to rely on certain people making certain decisions so hopefully that works out in my favor.”

Matt Hardy Returns; The Hardys To Reunite at IMPACT in NYC

Matt and Jeff Hardy make up one of the most recognizable tag teams of all-time. Individually, they have climbed to the top of professional wrestling. Now, at the upcoming IMPACT tapings in New York City, the brothers will reunite!

ImpactWrestling.com has learned that TNA has come to terms with Matt Hardy to appear at IMPACT in New York City, which marks the first time that Matt has been inside a TNA ring in three years – this was also the last time a match featuring the Hardy’s was nationally televised.

Together, Matt and Jeff Hardy are one of the most decorated tag teams of all time and we are excited to see what the duo has planned for NYC!

TNA will be taping July episodes of Impact Wrestling on June 25-27 from the Manhattan Center in New York City.

Elijah Burke Speaks On CM Punk’s Comments About Him, Possible WWE Return

    17

The following are highlights of a new interview with Elijah Burke:

On his WWE departure and a return: “No main reason for departure except with all of the creative changes, writers switching from brand to brand, I kinda got lost in the shuffle. “Black Thursday” came and almost 15 wrestlers got let go. It was their call, I wasn’t in any program or being used as I was in a rebuilding faze. I look forward to returning to the WWE when the time is right for both parties, and hopefully that will be sooner than later.”

On Vince McMahon: “Vince is great. He was one cool cat! Never had a bad experience with him. Anytime you can walk up to boss and say, What’s up dawg and give some him some dap, that should let you know what type of man he is. As a matter of fact, when he came out on ECW with the doorag on after Wrestlemania 23…. Take a wild guess who that doorag belonged to???”

On CM Punk’s comments about him: “Never heard them… People mentioned it to me via social media, but I have no thoughts on it. EVERY thought that I ever had about Phil, he knows them because I told him to his face, and I’d like to think that he’d do the same, but I have no thoughts or comments about what was or may have been said. What would that say about me to say something behind Phil’s back or in an interview where he can’t respond for himself?? I mean, what type of person would do such a thing?? Not I, not Pope.”

On TNA: “I enjoyed my time with TNA as they gave me the ball and allowed me to run with it. What was really awesome was that Pope was NEVER scripted as Vince Russo allowed Pope to be Pope and would literally say, “Nobody knows what Pope would do except you.” I enjoyed working with him and others in TNA.”
