Former Wrestling Producer Talks WWE Network Success, Fans Liking Heels & More

2

The following are highlights of a new IYHWrestling interview with former World Class Championship Wrestling producer Mickey Grant:

Do you think it was in WCCW when people started liking the bad guys for the first time? “Our bad guys worked so well in World Class Championship Wrestling, and much of the reason why was we told their side of the story. It wasn’t one sided, and so when we led up to a big conclusion, usually with something at Texas Stadium, there’d be fans on both sides. I think that’s what you’ve got to do, but you’ve got to do it well…I think it started with our show. I don’t think anyone had really given enough of the storyline; they’d written enough of a textured, shades-of -gray storyline before. Part of doing this thing live is having respect for the wrestling audience, and I think some people today just don’t have enough respect for the wrestling audience. I find that wrestling audiences come in all shapes and sizes: lawyers, judges, professors, non-professors, truck drivers. Whoever they are, you’ve got to get them…they’re connoisseurs of a good storyline …I respect hard-working people, and I believe they want a good story; they want something like this.”

Do you think in the long run the WWE Network will be a success? “I don’t know about their network; I just think I know maybe a little about wrestling. I think wrestling will be a success. If you have repetitive storylines, and if you don’t have your fans sitting on the end of their seats wondering what’s going to happen next week, you’re not going to have a market. Too many people have done that…I think somebody with relatively little money can jump in there today and do very well…If you’ve got the talent, and you’ve got the broadcast, and a methodology to get it to the audience, it’s going to work…I think that a handful of people will probably come about who will turn wrestling upside down, inside out and rebirth it, where it is exciting…I think it’s there; it just takes bigger-than-life personalities…and it would take off…I think a lot of people like Vince McMahon, they just get kind of in a rut. They’ve done it so many times, and the next thing you know networks are turning them off and turning them down. But that has nothing to do with wrestling; that just has to do with bad storytelling.”

Adam Cole Talks About Daniel Bryan, Attention To Detail In Wrestling

    3

ROH World Champion Adam Cole recently spoke to Steven Muehlhausen of BetweenTheRopes.com to promote Saturday’s “Global Wars” show.

Lack Of Attention To Detail In Wrestling: “I think your 100 percent right. I think that the guys that do pay attention to detail stand out so much more. And my reasoning behind this is to me, pro wrestling being an event, being a spectacle that people come and watch and check out. Wrestlers and the moves that we are doing are just a small part of the entire show. So like for example, if something needs to be done or something needs to be said, there are often times where I will communicate with the referee, I will communicate with the commentator whether it be Kevin Kelly or Steve Corino. I will communicate with the cameraman and I will let them know there places to be or their stories to tell, to help me tell my story, so the story is told to a broader audience of the people watching it on their computer screens, watching it on their television screens. Because when you have everybody on the same page, paying attention to the same detail that your paying attention too, your story gets told so much better and it’s told so much easier because everyone’s on the same page. And Kevin Steen is very good at that. I like to think I pay attention to that as well, but that is something very very important, that like you said guys don’t pay attention to as much, but I’ve always tried too especially in this role I’ve had as champion.”

How He Relates to Daniel Bryan: “I think for sure. I think that was one of the coolest moments about Wrestlemania 30. There’s a lot of independent wrestlers that are smaller guys from all over the world who wrestle and I looked at that and I said, “ok it totally is possible and it totally is doable.” I think there’s definitely cases where people have made that comment to me before about me with people saying that maybe I am too small or maybe I’m not big enough and I’m not six foot four or 265 pounds. But Daniel Bryan has proved that size doesn’t matter and its true. I know that cliché and said over and over again. If your good enough at what you do in this job, the people will recognize it and their voices will be heard and let the world know that you deserve to be in the position you’re in. Bryan has done great in that role and I can certainly relate to that. It’s very very motivating.”

Cole also gives his thoughts on facing Kevin Steen this Saturday, who he thinks the best wrestler in the world is right now and much more.

  • Eric Bischoff Talks About His Rise To Power In WCW

    2

Former WCW President Eric Bischoff was Steve Austin’s guest on this week’s Steve Austin Show podcast, which you can listen to at PodcastOne.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Rumors Of WCW Being Shut Down In The Early 1990’s:

“What I saw from my perspective was that Turner Corporate was tired of [wrestling] politics. They tried the Jim Herd experiment. That didn’t work. They tried a couple of other variations of Jim Herd. They tried Kip Frey. That was a disaster. They tried all these different variations of management and leadership and I knew that Turner Corp. – I don’t remember who told me – but I had gotten word that they were considering pulling the plug. (pause) I said, ‘If they pull the plug, I’m going back to Minneapolis.'”

“So, I threw my name in the hat. I had heard they were looking for an executive producer – they tried the Bill Watts thing – and they wanted to get away from wrestling people. They wanted someone to run the company who understood the entertainment business, but wasn’t so entrenched in wrestling that they were sucked into the politics of it.”

    Pitching Himself To Turner Executives:

“I was passionate and I felt it. I believed in it. I believed in myself. I’ve been passionate about wrestling since I was a little kid and I was passionate about my approach to it. And the solution that I had, especially given that Turner had identified as their problem, which was not wanting any more wrestling guys running a television company. So, it worked.”

His Vision To Make WCW The Top Wrestling Promotion In The World:

“The vision was to broaden it because – if you go back in time and look at what WCW was and where it existed in that moment of time where I had that opportunity, it was considered a very small, third-rate, kind of Southern, hereditary aspects of the NWA and Crocket regional promotion, and they were trying to compete with the WWF at the time. So, if you want to compete at their level, you have to be able to play at their level. So, my approach was to mainstream it and to make it feel bigger and make it feel more mainstream and less regional.”

Terri Runnels Talks Relationship With Goldust, Romances In Wrestling & More

    1

The following are highlights of a new Ask Me Anything Reddit chat with former WWE Diva Terri Runnels:

Being in the PMS stable and doing the miscarriage angle: “HATED the name PMS, HATED, HATED that cheap angle!!! That was a Vince Russo special that I begged him to change…Vince McMahon sided with Russo on that one! CHEAP and not effective!”

Her favorite Owen Hart story: “Dustin and I always went over to Harley and BJ Race’s home to have his award winning chili. The night before the PPV we went over and Owen and I think Mick Foley came too. Harley had made a literal VAT of chili and he was very proud and protective of his bathtub full of red heaven! When Harley wasn’t looking Owen went to change the ratio of hot sauce to chili and accidentally (I really don’t think he meant to drop the whole bottle in the chili…maybe he did) added an entire bottle of hell’s whispers to the blue ribbon pot! Needless to say when Harley realized it and when he finally caught Owen off guard the next day he USED his stun gun on Owen until tears where coming out of Owen’s eyes! I really miss Owen! :(”

Her favorite Ray Traylor story: “Oh Dear Lord…there are just SO many and most take too long! I will tell you that Ray legitimately got us LOST in a parking garage for 15 minutes! Not saying what plant from God’s GREEN EARTH he might have enjoyed prior to…just saying I actually starting Fussin’ at him. For all of you NON Southerners…that would mean I was audibly complaining! :D”

How many behind the scenes romances were there with Superstars and Divas? “Can’t tell you now but it certainly seems like it is occurring some more now than in the ATTITUDE ERA! Lots of KayFabe Lovin back in the day!”

Did WWE want her to expose her chest when The Kat did? “I showed what I wanted to where my boobs were concerned. I enjoyed the introduction and perfection of the underboob! Always made some countries a little nervous. :D”

Getting put through a table by The Dudleys: “LOVED being the first woman to be put through the table with the Dudleys. Vince was VERY nervous and threatened Bubba if he hurt me! I asked for the table NOT to be gimmicked…and my only regret is that Bubba was scared he would hurt me and he protected me too much! I wanted more of that table! TRUE!”

Who she wanted to work more with: “I would love to have done more with Steve Austin. We always had fun whenever we had “stuff” to do. He is not the “manage needy type” if ya know what I mean! :D Still liked working with him. Loved working with Edge and would have liked more and also Test. I would have had fun with Kevin Nash too!”

Taking a stinkface from Rikishi: “Funny story…Junior said “Girl, I am extra fresh and clean for you!”…and so he was! Who woulda thunk it right!?! If you ever really pay attention…most people don’t “take” his finish…I saw it as a respect thing and took it as best I could. He could have made it brutal for me and didn’t…so happy we have been good friends for over 25 years! We go way back to NWA WCW days at Center Stage in ATL…them wuz tha dayz! :D”

What’s the nicest thing Vince McMahon ever did for her? “Let me sign a contract to only work TV’s and PPV’s so I could be at home with Dakota! :)”

Her current relationship with Goldust: “Always massive respect and love based on the fact that we have a daughter together. Sometimes I wish his current wife would be comfortable in the fact that he is all hers where the husband wife thing is concerned. We have co-parented and communicated since 1999 w/o any major troubles. I think there might be a bit of a short leash there. That is his choice and he has to live with it. What matters is that we communicate for Dakota. We used to have a lot more fun and laughs though…I have to say that is a bit disappointing now that I think of it. :(”

Will she ever write a tell-all book? “Nope, I like my friends and don’t think it’s nice to do that to them. I think people should have a choice if they want to tell provocative things about themselves…shouldn’t be in the hand of others.”

Does she see herself in the WWE Hall of Fame? “I sincerely believe there are SO many deserving older wrestlers that should be given the honor before me.”

What was planned for her storyline with Brian Pillman before his death: “I was going to leave Dustin instead of finishing out the renewal of our vows after Brian “had” me for 30 days. Dustin was going to turn face and I would have become more of a heel.”
