  • Jim Ross Blog: JR Offers Advice To WWE On How To Fix Recent Problems

    25

WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross recently published a new blog on his official website where he addressed what he feels WWE could do to fix some of their recent problems.

Below is an excerpt from the blog:

“My thoughts on WW’s recent communications and the fallout regarding their stock is simple. I outlined most of my take on this matter in the last blog that I authored.

However, I feel the solution is as simple as producing a more compelling TV product, putting key talents in a positive position to make a difference and overall ‘booking’ a better product that will appeal to the existing die hard fans and entice disenfranchised fans to return to the fold with a style of product that appeals to more to a mass audience of sports entertainment fans.

No fan, old or new, wants to sit through bad acting or long scenes that feature such. Dramatic, organic, dynamic promos where performers express themselves regarding a hot, personal issue or the importance of becoming a champion do not fall in the category of bad acting within the genre IMO.

Fans also do not need to be subjected to poorly executed comedy that is simply not funny. If comedy is written to satisfy a small aspect of the audience and that could be as small as the decision makers it should not be on TV. Simple, right?

Talents who have been percolating and touching the next level should e turned loose and given the chance to make a legit difference. In WWE, Dolph Ziggler comes to mind, in TNA guys like James Storm or Bobby Roode pop into my head as does a Michael Elgin in ROH.

Likely multiple other names belong on this off the top of my head listing but the bottom line is that if talents have gotten close but their creative push has been cut short for whatever the reason then perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate that mindset and put them back in the game if they are sound of mind and body.

At the end of the day, any company’s whose ‘sales’ are down has to focus on attracting new customers using smart marketing and consistently delivering a great product. Yep….it’s easier said than done but it’s doable.

Adding new customers/consumers will solve many ills but the general image that the media has on the genre isn’t changing in a major way any time soon even though I can tell you from personal experience that the perception of the genre today as compared to when I started in the business is night and day.

Changing the overall image of men in tights wrestling inside a 20 foot squared circle is and always will be a “work in progress” and that’s o.k.

The pro wrestling business is resilient and has deep roots unless those in charge of the genre across the board feel compelled to change what has essentially worked well for years.

Refine it, yes. Change it and continue to distance one’s self from the fundamental aspects of the business is as illogical as any business ignoring the basic rules of economics. If one spends more than one earns said entity is certainly doomed for failure. That goes for ALL business as the basic laws of economics are just as viable today as they were when the concept was created. Same goes for the fundamentals of pro wrestling which are just as viable today as they were back in the day.”

Details On Season 3 Of WWE Total Divas, New WWE Diva Joins The Cast

    11

WWE issued the following press release today:

LOS ANGELES – E!, WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions continue their intimate look inside the glamorous, hectic and often dramatic lives of the WWE Divas when “Total Divas” returns for Season 3 Sunday, Sept. 7, at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.

Cameras will once again shadow Nikki and Brie Bella, Natalya, Naomi, Cameron and rookies Eva Marie and Summer Rae, giving viewers insight into how these women, who are on the road for 52 weeks a year, balance their personal lives while fighting for the spotlight. In addition, WWE Diva Rosa Mendes joins the cast, as the fiery Latina who has been around WWE for years has finally found herself in the limelight. Season two of “Total Divas” is currently airing all-new episodes every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.

One of E!’s most popular series, “Total Divas” currently averages 798,000 viewers in the 18-49 demo, with a total of 1.3 million viewers on average. Additionally, the series ranks as a cable top-five destination in its timeslot, Sundays 9-10 p.m., in the viewers 18-34 and women 18-34 demos. “Total Divas” is E!’s second-strongest original series of 2014 to date, following “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”

In season two, the drama has been taken to new levels as the Divas’ popularity has grown. Nikki’s relationship with her boyfriend, WWE Superstar John Cena, has been under a media microscope and their contradicting thoughts on marriage and starting a family have placed the couple in a deadlock.

Meanwhile, Brie has been eagerly planning her upcoming wedding to WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan, which will culminate in the “Total Divas” season finale airing Sunday, June 1, at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.

For Naomi, this season has been a roller coaster, as she married the love of her life, WWE Superstar Jimmy Uso, struggled with the idea of motherhood, and dropped her very first single, “Dance All Night.” In the remainder of the season, viewers will see Naomi face a career-threatening injury when she takes a blow from a fellow Diva during a televised match.

Similar to Naomi, fun-loving Natalya has faced several challenges in season two as she continues to find common ground in her first year of marriage to her husband Tyson Kidd, especially when it comes to money, in-laws and their lackluster romantic lives. Natalya has also struggled with newbie Summer Rae, who has become a key player in WWE, taking screen time away from the veteran Divas.

Natalya wasn’t the only Diva who Summer had conflicts with as she went toe-to-toe with Brie, Nikki and, as viewers will come to see later this season, possible tag team partner Eva Marie. Away from work, Summer has been trying to get into the dating scene after a recent breakup left her yearning for companionship.

Sassy and saucy Cameron is also getting back to her music and dance roots as she gears up to release her first single. However, she is more focused on raising her celebrity status, which doesn’t sit very well with her boyfriend.

Eva Marie opened up a closet full of secrets this season, each more shocking than the one before. Season two opened with the redheaded Diva revealing she secretly eloped with her longtime boyfriend Jonathan and some provocative modeling photos from her past surfaced, which spread quickly through the WWE locker room. Coming up, Eva continues to surprise and shows a side to her that none of the other Divas has seen before.

Former model and WWE Diva Rosa Mendes joins the cast for season three. A veteran of the Divas Division since 2006, Rosa has spent the past year with her eyes on the cast of “Total Divas.” Now that she’s one of them, there is no telling what may happen next.

On top of all the drama outside of the ring, Rosa and the rest of the Divas compete for a top spot, and the highly coveted Diva’s title, at WrestleMania 30.

“Total Divas” is produced by WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions. Jon Murray, Gil Goldshein, Jeff Jenkins and Russell Jay are Executive Producers for Bunim-Murray Productions. Kevin Dunn and Will Staeger are Executive Producers for WWE.

  • Press Release: TNA Announces New Family-Friendly Television Show

    10

TNA recently issued the following press release:

Challenge and TNA Entertainment have joined forces for a historic announcement – teaming up to deliver TNA’s first ever wrestling programming specifically designed for a family audience.

An all-new version of TNA Xplosion will air weekly on Challenge from Saturday May 31 at 9am. The show has been reformatted with families in mind and to purposely differentiate itself from TNA’s flagship post-watershed programme IMPACT WRESTLING.

Xplosion – which is hosted by Jeremy Borash and features a mix of new matches, classic bouts and the hilarious ‘Spin Cycle’ panel debates – will also continue to be shown in its current late night timeslot of 11pm on Wednesday evenings. TNA IMPACT WRESTLING is broadcast every Sunday at 9pm.

Challenge can be viewed across the UK and Ireland on Sky (145), Freeview (46), Virgin Media (139) and Freesat (145).

TNA President Dixie Carter said: “Xplosion moving to Saturday morning on Challenge is a strategic and natural evolution of TNA programming, as our product resonates with fans of all ages.

“Families with young children are always strongly represented during TNA’s annual MAXIMUM IMPACT Tour. I am confident with the new format and time slot of Xplosion we will continue to attract new fans, particularly kids.

“Ask any TNA Superstar and they will tell you, there is no greater feeling than seeing the eyes of a child light up when he sees his favourite wrestler in action.

“Through TNA’s flagship IMPACT WRESTLING programme and the all-new Xplosion, combined with innovative and engaging content delivered daily through our digital and social channels, there are more ways than ever to engage fans with the TNA brand.”

Stephen Ladlow, Director of Challenge, commented: “As the exclusive home of TNA in the UK and Ireland, it’s great to be able to bring TNA to a whole new audience with our new family friendly show.

“We know that the TNA UK Tour attracts fans of all ages, so it seems fitting that Challenge can now cater for them whether young or old with this new Saturday morning Xplosion show.”

Jeremy Borash added: “TNA’s awesome fans across the UK and Ireland can expect Xplosion to showcase their favourite TNA Superstars each week, with an emphasis on two of the most popular types of matches, X-Division and the Knockouts.

  • Chris Jericho Speaks On Using Rock Antics In Wrestling, Performing On Broadway?

    0

The following are highlights of a new interview with Chris Jericho:

On comparing live rock peformances to pro wrestling: “The comparison is just the rush of being in front of a live crowd. You’ve gotta connect with the crowd and you’ve gotta always be the party host for the people, Especially on a day like this, because it is very cold and rainy, but if you can get people involved in the show, that takes their mind away from the weather and they just get enjoyment from a great rock and roll show. Anytime you’re in a live element, whether it’s music or wrestling or live theater or whatever, you have to have a connection with the crowd; it’s the most important thing. It’s more important than nailing every single one of your shows. If you’re connecting with the crowd and getting them involved in what you’re doing, it’s always gonna be a great show.”

On using rock and roll antics in wrestling: “When I started wresting, I wanted to be the ultimate rock and roll frontman in wrestling, I wanted to be the Paul Stanley [KISS] of wrestling, the Dave Lee Roth [VAN HALEN] of wrestling. So when I started becoming big in the WWE, the Y2J character was, basically, just the same traits and characteristics that I had ripped off from Paul Stanley or James Hetfield [METALLICA]. So then when we started FOZZY, I took the same characteristics that I was using in wrestling that I had stolen from rock and roll and just brought it back into rock and roll. So it’s all a very similar circle of show-business pomposity, shall we say.”

On possibly appearing in a Broadway musical: “I would love to do Broadway. I had Sebastian Bach [SKID ROW] on my podcast a couple of weeks ago; he did great on Broadway, because, once again, you’re performing. Anytime you can perform… And singing is acting; you have to get into it, you have to believe what you’re singing and believe what you’re doing, and, once again, believe in the show that you’re putting on. ‘Cause people aren’t stupid; they can sniff out smebody that is real, they can sniff out a fake from a mile away. If you get their trust and you make them realize that we will have a great time at this show, [they’ll] have a great time watching this play or whatever, they’ll get more involved and get into it.”

  • Christopher Daniels Talks His TNA Departure, Eric Young As World Champion

    0

The following are highlights of a new RCWR Show interview with former TNA star Christopher Daniels:

On his TNA departure: “Just disappoint really. I envisioned there be an opportunity for Bad Influence vs the Wolves to happen on television but I found out that really wasn’t in the plans. TNA made the decision of what they thought was best for their product. I don’t necessarily agree with it but in the end it’s their decision and they need to make the decision that they think are best for their business. Whether it’s for financial reasons, creative reasons or a mixture of the two. So disappointment? Yes but not frustration or bitterness. It’s happened before. For every company around has made decisions that have fans scratch their heads on but at the same time those guys have the long term picture in their heads and it may not be clear to the wrestling fans at this point of why they’re doing it but something will come in the future where they will understand and at the same time I’m not dwelling on that decision. I’m looking forward to working in different companies, and the many matchups available for myself and Frankie Kazarian right now in the independent scene. It’ll be interesting to see what we do in the next couple of months.”

On fans seeing TNA as an unrecognizable product with so many veterans gone: “In terms of my presence there you’ll see and feel in the next couple of months cause I won’t be there and you’ll be able to notice before Daniels and after Daniels in that respect. But for people that are saying they’re not going to recognize the talent roster, my retort to that is there’s still going to be guys like James Storm, Ken Anderson, Gunner, Robbie E and Jesse G, people like Gail Kim and the Beautiful People are still there. And then you’re getting this opportunity with guys like Sanada, like Brittney, like Tigre uno, Bram, even Magnus who is still somewhat new to the promotion or at least to the position that he’s in far as being one of the top guys. He’s still a young face and is making strides as a character and as a performer. I think that most wrestling fans will give wrestling an opportunity and it’s up to those people that I just named to give the wrestling fan base reasons to continue to tune in. I neglected to even mention Eric Young who’s their new World champion there. He’s been around for a while, he’s a recognizable face and he’s now the World champion. He’s already got another show in the works for Animal Planet, he’s a very high profile individual and probably a very good choice of World Champion at this point. Now it depends on building up that fan base and getting them use to the idea of Eric Young as champion and those names that I just mentioned to be the benchmark for the company.”

On Eric Young as World Heavyweight Champion: “I feel like he sort of got thrown in the deep end. There wasn’t really an opportunity for fans to get behind him, get behind his road as a no. 1 contender. It all happened so quickly. That’s no fault to Eric as it’s the decision the creative team made. Now it’s up to the creative team and the company as a whole to sort of get behind Eric. The creative team has to decide on how to present him as a strong champion and put all their effort behind him or do you go back to Magnus. Are they going to make Eric a transitional champion and put the title on someone else? These are all the questions that have to be answered in the next couple of months. I feel like if he’s given the chance to succeed on his own merit then I believe he can succeed. It’s just a matter of how decisions are made sometimes and like I said you don’t always understand them when their first made but hopefully people can take a step back and sort of look at the grand picture and hopefully things will turn out will for Impact and Eric Young overall.”

On the reason he was never World Heavyweight Champion: “Not my decision. Those decisions don’t come from us. Any wrestler that has ever been asked why you haven’t been World champion yet the answer is you’re asking the wrong people. When you have your interview with John Gaubrick, Dave Lagana or Matt you can ask them. I think every wrestler in the world has wanted to be World champion at some point and written a scenario where they could be World champion and I’m no exception. I’ve pitched ideas and thought to myself maybe I could do this or that or maybe this would be a good position for me, why they didn’t go that way? In the end it goes back to that broad picture. Creative teams usually have this broad idea and they have certain months and months in advance sort of laid out and their decision making…it’s not up to me to question as I just assume they are just doing what’s best for their business. I thought for a while I was hot enough to do something in that respect but they obviously had a different idea or at least they viewed me in a different light in terms of what I could bring to the table as a character, performer.”

  • Chris Sabin Discusses His TNA Departure, Return To The Independent Scene

    0

The following are highlights of a new MLive interview with former TNA star Chris Sabin:

On getting back into the indies: “I’m looking forward to this next chapter in my life. It’s getting back to my roots since I started out in the independents. Professional wrestling is my passion. I’m trying to stay as busy as possible. I believe I can have a good match with anyone. It doesn’t matter if they were on television the last 20 years or just an independent wrestler coming up through the ranks.”

On how he changed mentally after getting injured in 2010 and 2011: “It was probably mentally and physically the toughest thing I’ve ever had to go through in my entire life. I was wrestling for almost 11 years straight up until that first injury then all of a sudden I was sitting at home not doing anything, not even being able to walk. I was pretty apprehensive for months about what I could do in the ring. I even did an interview not too long ago where I felt I couldn’t do all the high-flying stuff I could do before my injuries. I was almost embarrassed when I saw myself saying that, it shows a lack of believe in myself. If I put my mind too it, and put the work in, I know I can be the Chris Sabin I was before the injuries. I know I’m stronger for getting through this.”

The general consensus appears to be that WWE looks at the two-to-three month window as a best-case scenario. In all actuality, it could be much longer before Bryan is able to physically return to the ring.

As previously reported, WWE has revealed that they will be making a “big announcement” regarding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Monday’s edition of RAW, which will be a taped show from London, England.
