Daniel Bryan’s Neck Surgery A Success: Details On How Long He’ll Be Out

69

Daniel Bryan underwent successful surgery (a ‘cervical foraminotomy’) on Thursday to decompress a nerve root in his neck.  Here is WWE’s official statement:

“After being diagnosed with the nerve issue in his neck by WWE physician Dr. Chris Amann, Bryan underwent a procedure known as a cervical foraminotomy to decompress the nerve root. The surgery was performed by world-renowned neurosurgeon and sports medicine expert Dr. Joseph Maroon. WWE.com was not able to get an official timetable for Daniel Bryan’s return, but can confirm that the WWE World Heavyweight Champion is out of surgery and doing well, with strength already returning to his hands.”

Typical recovery time for this procedure is 2-3 months.

Backstage News On Triple H’s Reputation In WWE, Vince Making Him Look Bad

28

It’s being said that Triple H is in kind of a rough position when it comes to talent relations for WWE. Basically, Vince McMahon is still the guy making all of the final calls, and because he’s known to change his mind so often, HHH is basically forced to go to talent multiple times, explaining that what he had told them previously was no longer happening.

Despite being in the rough situation, it’s being said that Triple H is still viewed as “one of us” to a lot of the talent in the company.

When guys get tryouts in WWE nowadays, they are told to be careful what they say in social media, particularly anything that could potentially get them in trouble.

The most notable situation of this was with Mark and Jay Briscoe, where they wrote a gay slur on Twitter, despite apologizing for it after the fact, WWE wouldn’t touch either of them.

  • Daniels Talks More About GFW, Kazarian/TNA, Vince Russo Rumors & More

    1

The following are highlights of a new v2 Wrestling Podcast interview with Christopher Daniels:

On whether Frankie Kazarian will be departing TNA soon: “I can’t really confirm 100% but I can tell you that the odds are very good that rather soon the both of us will be doing what we want to do in the world of professional wrestling.”

On why he was released by TNA: “I’m not sure what their reasoning was. It wasn’t money, we never even got to (talking about) money. Part of me takes it personally. Anybody that is in some sort of entertainment field where they are their own product, when you’re told “No, we don’t want you”, of course a little bit of you takes it personally.”

On rumours that Vince Russo is back in the TNA fold: “I never saw Vince, and the creative team never said one way or the other. They’re denying it now, but when I was backstage, Frankie and I never saw any hint that Vince was there.”

On the likelihood of working with Jeff Jarrett’s new promotion: “I’m certainly hoping to work with Jeff Jarrett, I think he’s a great mind. I think that if someone could take something and make it out of nothing, I think it’s Jeff Jarrett.”

On breaking kayfabe: “I definitely respect the business enough to try and protect it as much as possible. When I came up, kayfabe was solid, but now I’ve seen the change in the mentality. The curtain has been pulled back and it’s hard to unring that bell now the word is out. It’s one thing for everybody to be in on the gag, but you don’t want to make people aware of it while they’re watching the product. Like, people know there’s a gimmick to magic, but they never really know what the gimmick is. You want them guessing what they’re watching.”

  • Backstage News On Possible Change In Price In The Future For WWE Network

    10

The one-dollar increase in price for Netflix is something to keep a close eye on, as far as possible changes to WWE Network’s subscription rates in the future.

At a one-dollar price increase, if WWE were to do it, it would bring in an extra $7 million per year in revenue, which would offset some of the losses if the numbers fail to reach the estimated expectations.

Netflix and Amazon have both recently increased their prices, and the only reason WWE and UFC didn’t follow suit was because Netflix established a low price point as the value of a streaming service.

  • WWE Issues Statement Regarding Rusev, Lana & Vladimir Putin

    19

In response to an article at DailyBeast.com about WWE using Rusev and Lana to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin into WWE storylines, WWE issued the following statement to the website:

“WWE programming, like Hollywood movies and television shows, is an exciting blend of action, characters and fictional storylines of good versus evil that are often inspired by pop culture and current events.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given us good material to work with to create strong characters in Rusev and Lana, who are perceived as either protagonists or antagonists depending on where in the world you are watching WWE programming.”

Major Update On WWE’s TV Rights Fees Negotiations

    3

WWE and NBCUniversal are close to finalizing a new television deal, but nothing has been signed yet, according to an exclusive report by Variety.com. It was widely expected that a new deal would be announced at this afternoon’s NBCUniversal “upfronts” event – where television companies pitch their upcoming programming lineups to advertisers and the media.

Variety reports that the holdup is that WWE CEO Vince McMahon is pushing for quicker access to digital rights of WWE programming. Specifically, WWE wants RAW and SmackDown to be available on the WWE Network shortly after the shows air on USA Network and Sci-Fi.

The new TV deal “should be completed shortly” – and as of 2:30pm EST, there is still some hope that an agreement will be announced this afternoon in New York City.

While financial terms of the negotiations have not been made public yet, the belief is that WWE will be able double their current rate of approximately $140 million per year for WWE programming.

McMahon has assured investors multiple times that he strongly expects to “double or triple” their rights fees – so anything less than double could have a devastating impact on WWE’s stock value.

    The Case for Unification

    28

The undercard singles titles are all chilling across the pond these days, as Bad News Barrett, Sheamus, and Paige all won championships in recent weeks. New champions are a welcome sight in the WWE these days, especially considering how stale the previous champions’ runs had become.

Dean Ambrose’s reign as United States Champion will likely be the forgotten reign in years to come. He held the title for almost a year while only defending it a few times before finally dropping it to Sheamus during a battle royal a few weeks back.

The same holds true for Big E and the Intercontinental Championship. Although he did not hold the title as long as Ambrose held his US Championship, his reign was unmemorable and he engaged in no meaningful feuds during his months with the title. As for AJ Lee, her run with the title seemed fresh at first, but she eventually ran out of challengers and it seemed like the right time to crown a new champion.

Ambrose held the title for almost a year and hardly ever defended it.
Ambrose held the title for almost a year and hardly ever defended it.

With recent undercard title reigns being unmemorable, it leads one to wonder if unification is the answer. One of the primary reasons the titles go undefended is because it is difficult to have too many stories going at once, especially meaningful ones that involve championship contests. This leads to champions holding insignificant titles like the US Championship as a way to legitimize or build up the character, but in reality, the title does little because it goes undefended.

One of the best options would perhaps be to unify the United States and Intercontinental Championships. By unifying the titles into just the Intercontinental Championship, it could make the title seem important again. In the Attitude Era, the title held importance, with fans knowing that most superstars who held the strap were on their way to the main event.

That is not the case anymore, however, as the title is thrown on random superstars in an attempt to build interest, but then creative puts in no further effort. It is a little sad that the most interesting thing to happen involving the Intercontinental Championship in recent months was a tournament to crown a number one contender that did not even involve the champion at all (except for a few clips showing him standing in the back, angrily looking at a monitor).

  • Paige Reveals What The Rock Told Her At WrestleMania XXX Earlier This Year

    17

The official WWE website has a new interview up with current Divas Champion Paige. In the interview, Paige reveals what The Rock told her at WrestleMania XXX earlier this year. The following is an excerpt from the interview:

“I’m just taking every day as it comes. I have goals that I want to reach. In the long term, I want to be on the pay-per-views, I want to have my first WrestleMania match, and later on, I want to earn a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame one day. But I’m just taking it as it goes. I actually got some good advice from The Rock, who took me aside the day of WrestleMania 30, right before my Raw debut. He knew the connection that my family had and how hard I worked, and he said, “I just want you to stay humble and hungry.” Those words have literally been stuck in my head for the last month. Never be satisfied, but always be hungry.”

  • Jim Ross Q&A: His Retirement, WWE’s Handling Of CM Punk Situation, Wyatt Family

    2

The following are highlights of a new website Q&A update by WWE Hall Of Famer Jim Ross:

On the booking of The Wyatt Family and WWE turning heels into faces: “I don’t know the intention as I don’t understand the positioning or the meaning of much of today’s creative in a variety of promotions.”

On if he’ll ever retire: “I plan on retiring the same day that I’m buried.”

On multiple false-finishes in main event matches: “It’s a sensationalistic short cut and was impressive the first time that I saw it but not any more.”

On CM Punk and the way WWE has been handling that situation: “My take is that Punk should do whatever makes him happy. If he’s done with wrestling, he had a magnificent career. I respect his decision but WWE is stupid if they attempt to erase his legacy….and WWE isn’t stupid.”

On Alicia Fox: “I have no way of knowing. Alicia had one stellar night this past week on RAW and now we will wait and see if she can replicate the same on a regular basis.”

On the state of WWE’s Divas division: “WWE’s diva division is seemingly improving. Alicia Fox stole the divas show on Monday.”

  • Vince Russo Speaks On The Attitude Era, Dirt Sheets, Bret Hart, WCW & More

    8

The following are highlights of a Q&A update from the official website of Vince Russo:

The only reason you did anything good in WWE was because Vince McMahon was your filter. “A myth. While all the shows were bounced off Vince for final approval, Vince never changed what Ed and I wrote. He just “tweaked” some things within the segment. If Vince is “the filter”, than how do you explain where ratings are today, compared to when Ed and I were writing the show? And—the ratings have been in the 3-range since 2002.”

Could you respond to this Bret Hart quote from 2009 (courtesy of Ministry of Slam radio show): “I think they should take Vince Russo and hang him by the neck somewhere in the back of the parking lot.” “Had many conversations with Bret at WCW, never said anything like this to me. If Bret did indeed say it—than I don’t understand it. I think the world of Bret Hart. Keep in mind, many things have been said about me behind my back—never to my face—so it’s hard for me to really understand the reasoning behind it.”

Why book a legitimately injured Bret Hart in a hardcore match with Terry Funk (this is right after Bret was kicked in the head by Goldberg)? “I would never book anybody in a match that was hurt—if I was aware of it. Can’t remember back that far, but I’m sure Breat hadn’t spoke up about his injury yet.”

What were your original plans with Bret Hart coming into WCW? “Put him high on the pedastal that he deserved to be on.”

Why did you book yourself to win the WCW World Championship? “Just another week of TV. Was never a big deal to me, especially knowing I was going to relinquish it 3 days later.”

Ric Flair doesn’t have kind words for you either when talking about his time working with you in WCW. What was your experience working with The Nature Boy? “I loved every second of it. Again, while we worked together Ric never said ANYTHING negative about anything. It was HIS IDEA for me to shave his head. I gave his son, David, the most exposure he ever had in his career. We put his younger son Reed on TV. What more did Ric want? Again—nothing was ever said to me to my face by Ric—even when we worked together later at TNA.”

What on earth happened to the Samoe Joe kidnapping angle!? “Tell me and we’ll both know. Unfortunately for my critics–not my idea. I was just as perplexed as you. Still am.”

Mike Johnson and Dave Scherer of PWInsider.com do not like you, it appears? Why? “Maybe it’s because I had an interview set up with Mike after I left TNA. Then prior to the interview I had a conversation with Mike where he already seemed to know all the answers to the questions before even speaking to me. I told Mike that if he already had the answers—then there was no need in him interviewing me. So I canceled the interview. Dave? Dave is just another guy who writes whatever he wants to write about me without ever confronting me. That’s the power of the computer age . . . i guess.”

The “Attitude Era” was a blatant ripoff of ECW! “Yeah, I hear that alot. I knew of ECW, and had maybe seen a handful of shows. No offense, but what they were doing at the time had no impact on me whatsover during the birth of the “Attitude Era”. Here’s a great story of how the “attitude Era” actually started. It was Vince’s birthday—I had to get him something. What do you buy a millionaire? So, I bought him a T-Shirt that said, “Keep your ATTITUDE to yourself—I have enough of my own.” That was literally weeks before the “Attitude Era” was born.”

Do you RESPECT the dirt sheets as a whole? Why or why not? “Very few members. Why? It’s real simple. out of all the BS said about me over the past 20 years, I can count maybe 1, or 2 instances where I was actually “contacted” for a response. They wrote whatever they wanted to write because there was no accountability. Just like they said a few weeks ago that I was under contract with TNA. Even with all the rumors concerning my status of late—NOBODY—has picked up the phone to ask ME. How can you respect that?”

Do you read the dirt sheets? “Honestly? When I’m working on my computer, and I just need to step away from what I’m writing–I’ll pop on. You have to understand, since so many mistruths have been wriiten about me, it’s hard for me to really look at those sites with any legitimacy. You just never know what’s true, and what’s inaccurate.”

What was the “real” Vince McMahon like? “WOW—not too many people know. When you get past all the layers, and there’s a level of trust, you see a Vince that very few see. A guy that never grew up, and was still a kid at heart in many aspects. That wasn’t a good thing—it was a great thing. I loved those times I got to spend with the unguarded Vince. I actually miss them.”

Do you ever regret leaving WWE for WCW? “Tough question. I have to go back to WHY I left. I was literally on the verge of a nervous breakdown at that point. Vince had added “Smackdown” without even talking to Ed and I about it, and the pressure, stress and work load just became to much to handle. You have to remember there weren’t 20 people writing TV back then—there was TWO—Ed Ferrara and myself. It was just too much.”

Were you ever physically threatened by any wrestlers? “Yes. Shawn threatened me once by saying, “I know I can take you”, which was his “funny” way of threatening me, and Goldberg made me feel uneasy once. That’s about it, and that’s ridiculous on all our parts because at the end of the day it’s just business—nothing is personal.”
