Backstage Update On A Number Of Late Changes Made To Monday’s RAW Script

3

As previously reported, there were a number of late changes made to the script for this past Monday’s edition of WWE RAW. Originally, one of the main events was going to be Daniel Bryan vs. Batista, and as late as Sunday night, that was still the plan.

There was said to be a number of different ideas for angles that the company wanted to do with The Wyatt Family and The Shield on RAW, but ultimately they went with the version we saw on Monday night.

Additionally, one of the original ideas was to go with a Bray Wyatt vs. Roman Reigns singles match for the main event of the show, however they decided instead to go with a six-man tag-team match between both factions.

There was also a plan to have Evolution as guest timekeepers, but as noted, they felt that the finish, with Evolution interfering and attacking The Shield, would be too obvious if Evolution was sitting at ringside during the match.

  • Eric Bischoff Talks About His Rise To Power In WCW

    2

Former WCW President Eric Bischoff was Steve Austin’s guest on this week’s Steve Austin Show podcast, which you can listen to at PodcastOne.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Rumors Of WCW Being Shut Down In The Early 1990’s:

“What I saw from my perspective was that Turner Corporate was tired of [wrestling] politics. They tried the Jim Herd experiment. That didn’t work. They tried a couple of other variations of Jim Herd. They tried Kip Frey. That was a disaster. They tried all these different variations of management and leadership and I knew that Turner Corp. – I don’t remember who told me – but I had gotten word that they were considering pulling the plug. (pause) I said, ‘If they pull the plug, I’m going back to Minneapolis.'”

“So, I threw my name in the hat. I had heard they were looking for an executive producer – they tried the Bill Watts thing – and they wanted to get away from wrestling people. They wanted someone to run the company who understood the entertainment business, but wasn’t so entrenched in wrestling that they were sucked into the politics of it.”

    Pitching Himself To Turner Executives:

“I was passionate and I felt it. I believed in it. I believed in myself. I’ve been passionate about wrestling since I was a little kid and I was passionate about my approach to it. And the solution that I had, especially given that Turner had identified as their problem, which was not wanting any more wrestling guys running a television company. So, it worked.”

His Vision To Make WCW The Top Wrestling Promotion In The World:

“The vision was to broaden it because – if you go back in time and look at what WCW was and where it existed in that moment of time where I had that opportunity, it was considered a very small, third-rate, kind of Southern, hereditary aspects of the NWA and Crocket regional promotion, and they were trying to compete with the WWF at the time. So, if you want to compete at their level, you have to be able to play at their level. So, my approach was to mainstream it and to make it feel bigger and make it feel more mainstream and less regional.”

Cody Rhodes vs. Goldust To Feud, Update On The Goldbergs’ Wrestling Episode

    7

    – WWE announced at last night’s SmackDown and Main Event tapings that the company will return to the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, NY on Monday, November 3rd for RAW.

    – The long awaited Cody Rhodes vs. Goldust feud will in fact be happening, according to a report at PWInsider.com.

    – Tuesday night’s episode of “The Goldbergs” on ABC did in fact feature a pro wrestling theme. The show was advertised as having a Star Wars theme, however, the subplot saw the older brother on the show trying out for his high school wrestling team and confusing that with professional wrestling.

The character referenced “WWF” a dozen times and was shown play fighting in his living room with wrestling buddies, something I’m sure many of our readers remember from their childhoods. The character even brought out a steel chair during his high school wrestling meet.

The episode ended with an Ultimate Warrior tribute graphic.

Early viewership data is in for the show and it actually drew a season-low 4.07 million viewers.

HBK Talks About The Streak Ending, Undertaker Retiring, CM Punk

    36

Jim Ross’s guest on this week’s Ross Report podcast at PodcastOne.com was fellow WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels. A large portion of the show focused on Brock Lesnar defeating The Undertaker at WrestleMania and ending his legendary undefeated streak.

Michaels said that he and everybody else backstage were shocked when the referee counted the pinfall. Corroborating our reports from right after WrestleMania, he said that only “one man” makes the call about a decision like that – and that’s Vince McMahon.

He revealed that Vince’s decision for Undertaker’s streak to end came just 4 hours before the show went on the air.

JR saw the Undertaker backstage at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony and hugged his longtime friend. When he asked Undertaker how much longer he plans to continue wrestling, he replied, “I don’t know, i’ll let you know in a few hours.”

Shawn said that Undertaker’s choice about whether he wants to wrestle again has nothing to do with the streak being broken. Michaels said after the match, Undertaker told him he’d call him in a few weeks to catch up.

Shawn also gave his thoughts on CM Punk, saying that he completely understands Punk’s mentality of being mentally burned out.

Kane Taking Time Off Soon, Details On Shield-Evolution At Payback

    25

Sources indicate that Daniel Bryan will in fact be defending the WWE World Heavyweight championship against Kane in a Buried Alive Match.

Bryan is expected to retain, because Kane is taking time off from WWE soon until he returns to promote the new WWE Studios film See No Evil 2. The movie does not have an official release date yet, but is expected to be released around October.

Evolution vs. The Shield is also going to happen, but it might not be a 6-man tag match. As of this week’s RAW, WWE has also been talking about a series of 3 singles matches featuring members of the rival factions.

Rollins countered a Batista Bomb and Batista exited the ring. Rollins dove over the top rope onto Batista. He got back into the ring and attempted another dive over the top rope, but Batista stepped out of the way and Rollins crashed and burned. Batista rolled back into the ring and Rollins got counted out.

After the match, Batista hit a Batista Bomb on Rollins.

    – The Wyatt Family defeated John Cena and The Usos when Luke Harper hit a lariat on one of the Usos for the pin.

Exclusive Interview With TNA World Champion Eric Young

    5

Eric Young has been in TNA for nearly a decade and in that time we have seen him be a member of Team Canada, a stint a a comic book hero Super Eric, all the way through to being the top dog in the company and current TNA World Heavyweight Champion.

The 34-year-old from Florence, Ontario, Canada has won numerous titles turing his time in the company including; X Division champion, multiple time Tag Team champion, Television champion and ever Knockouts Tag Team champion with ODB, however the current title around his waste tops the lot.

We caught up with EY to talk about, getting to work with some of his heroes, his Animal Planet shows, and of course the night he was crowned TNA World Champion, plus much more.

    Q. How did you first get into the sport of professional wrestling?

I’ve been a fan since I was five-years-old, I’ve watched it my whole life and it’s all I ever really wanted to do. The week after I finished high school I began training at a gym, and three months after that I had my first pro match and it ha just snowballed from there. I’ve wrestled in all 50 states, every province, wrestled all over the world and now I’m the World Heavyweight champion, it has been a pretty wild ride.

    Q. When growing up who were some of the wrestlers that you enjoyed watching?

Being from Canada, Bret and Owen Hart were massive influences on me. Then there were guys like Sting, Terry Funk, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, I have a huge list of wrestlers that I enjoyed watching. I loved Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior, there was just something about it from the age of five or six and I  couldn’t get enough.

Still to this day I have lots of VHS tapes with tens of thousands of wrestling, I loved it when I five and I still love it today.

    Q. You’ve had the chance to work with the likes of Sting, Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, what was it like working with guys you grew up watching?

It’s hard to put that into words, these were guys that I idolised growing up, these were people that I wanted to be. I actually got to wrestle Sting in his first match back after 10 years away, and just being in the ring with him was a dream come true but very surreal at the same time. Sting was always good to be, Hulk as well, they always had time for me and it was great to be able to share a locker-room with guys like that and be on the same roster.

    Q. The likes of Sting, Hulk Hogan, AJ Styles, and Jeff Jarrett have all left TNA in recent months, what has that been like?

There is always massive turnover in professional wrestling, people come, people go, some people go to work in other places and some people end up coming back, that is just the nature of the beast. It’s never nice to see anyone go, but I’m still really good buddies with AJ Styles and we talk whenever we get a chance – we’re actually planning on doing a bike trip together in the summer.

    Q. When you first started in TNA did you ever think you’ll become World Heavyweight champion?

It’s always something that I wanted, and personally it’s always something I believed I could do. I don’t think there is anybody that doesn’t want to become World Heavyweight champion when they are in this business. The night I won the belt from Magnus on IMPACT! was a great feeling, I’m not taking anything away from him, it was an amazing match and he’s a super talented guy but I was better that day and now I’m the World champion and that sounds kind of crazy to say out loud.

    Q. What can we expect from you as Champion?

I told the fans and I meant it, that I’m going to be a fighting champion, that’s the kind of champion I like and that is the kind of champion I’m going to be. Every chance I get to defend my title I will, I will defend my title against anybody, anytime, any place, any time.

    Q. Who are some of the people you are looking forward to defending your title against?

The list is huge, pound-for-pound TNA has one of the pro wrestling rosters in the world. I’ve got a massive history with Bobby Roode, and he was they guy that held the belt longer than anybody, I would love to get in the ring and test myself against him.

Guys like Hall of Famer Kurt Angle, Austin Aries, James Storm, Gunner, Ken Anderson, these are all guys that I want to defend my belt against. They are all worthy, they all deserve a shot at the belt and secondly I want to test myself against the best and see what happens.

    Q.  What have been some of the highlights for you during your 10 year tenure in TNA?

Obviously my favourite moment was that night on IMPACT! when I won the gauntlet match and then went on to wrestle Magnus and become the World Heavyweight Champion for the first time. I wouldn’t change anything about my journey, it’s been an amazing journey, I’ve done all these different roles – I’ve been X-Division Champion, I’ve Tag Team champion on numerous occasions, I’ve held the TV title, I’ve even won the Knockouts Tag Titles with ODB.

One of the things I’m most proud of is being on television every week for nearly 10 years, which is something not many people are able to do. I think that shows my versatility, you never know what is going to happen next in this industry, it’s a crazy business but it has been great to experience all of it, the good, the bad and the indifferent.

I’ve always prided myself when the fans say things like, Eric Young is the most entertaining guy in professional wrestling. That’s really important to me, it always has been, it always will be, that’s the name of the game when it comes right down to it, it’s a television show, and it’s about entertaining people, if that with physicality that’s great, if its with comedy that’s great.

My first two years in TNA I didn’t say a singe word, I was the guy on team Canada to carry the action and to be physical, I got hired here because I was a pro wrestler, it had nothing to do with me being funny, and it’s cool to remind people of that because I’m a pro wrestler at my core, or the other stuff is important to me but I’m a pro wrestler first and foremost.

    Q. As World Champion, what more can we expect from yourself for the rest of 2014?

More of the same, I’ve always prided myself putting in 100% effort and it doesn’t matter if I’m sick or I’m hurt I will always put in the same amount of effort. As champion I feel that extra weight on my shoulders, being ‘the guy’ it’s important for me that people say Eric Young was involved in the best match on the show. For me it’s about making moments and memories, it’s about making people remember stuff. I’ve had lots of positive feedback so far and I just want to continue defending my belt and being the best I can.

    Q. With yourself as TNA Champion and Daniel Bryan as WWE Champion, is it the era of the beard?

Yeah, it’s obviously the era of the beard, I’m not daft, I don’t live under a rock, I hear these things and I’m sure he hears them too. I’ve actually met Daniel in person and I always hear nothing but good things about him. Anytime anyone want to compare me to him, I have absolutely no problem with that, feel free to carry on, he’s a super talented guy and a tremendous wrestler.

    Q. Away from wrestling you’ve also presented a number of hit shows on Animal Planet, what has that been like?

It’s amazing, it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. I still have other goals in my life but TV is something that I’ve always wanted to do. I love entertaining people, the shows allow me to combine my passion of extreme sports, I’ve always been a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I’ve been all over North America and done lots of crazy things, and it’s been an amazing experience.

    Q. What is it like being a guest on the Steve Austin podcast?

Steve and myself are kind of wired the same way, he loves pro wrestling and always has, I love pro wrestling. He’s also an outdoors man, he loves fishing an he watched my shows on Animal Planet and loved them and through the miracle of Twitter I got talking to him, we went back a forth and hit it off right away.

We’re still buddies and talk to this day. For me he was a guy that I idolised and is one of the top five pro wrestlers of all time. I got to go to his house in LA, we sat around his computer with the microphone and we just talked about wrestling and life.

  • Jim Ross Blog: HBK On Ross Report, RAW Thoughts, Wyatt Family’s Development

    4

The following are highlights of the latest Jim Ross blog:

On his Ross Report podcast with HBK: “Today (Tuesday) at approximately 6 pm pacific time our much anticipated Ross Report Podcast with the great Shawn Michaels will be available for FREE downloading from podcastone.com or via iTunes. This is one of the most riveting and compelling interviews that I’ve ever been associated with and I feel confident that you are going to enjoy it immensely.”

On Sheamus winning the U.S. title: “Sheamus winning the US title in the Battle Royal was a solid start to RAW with good action and featuring multiple talents. Dean Ambrose US title reign albeit long was uneventful and perhaps Sheamus can help add value to the long time title. I could also see Sheamus trading in his protagonist jersey for an antagonist one sooner than later. Sheamus is a very smart talent who, I think, would be able to add the necessary heel nuances to his game.”

On Kane and Daniel Bryan: “I wasn’t crazy about WWE World Champion Daniel Bryan seemingly retreating from Kane but I mark it off to DB simply wanting to protect his wife and doing what he can to keep her out of harm’s way. This matter needed to be explained better because one can’t have the company’s top champion being reluctant of physically engaging with anyone. I am of the opinion that this Daniel Bryan/Kane storyline needs better explanation for the TV audience and if nothing else for more viable questions to be asked that encourage the audience to mentally invest in what they are seeing.”

On The Wyatt Family’s development: “The continued creative development of the Wyatt Family has my interest even though I have no idea where it is going. I love Bray Wyatt’s promos and his in ring work as big men with a second gear are so marketable and so hard to find. Until Bray does something so heinous that the audience turns on him he’s going to continue to travel the cool, unique antagonist road that really isn’t a traditional heel road at all. It is however a star road and perhaps it’s more important to develop pure stars in today’s market, in the mind of some, than it is to develop traditional pro wrestling villains. Time will tell how it all works out but I am enjoying the evolution nonetheless.”

On Adam Rose: “Have to admit that I’m not plugged into the Adam Rose persona yet but I do know that the wrestler himself is a talented South African who can go bell to bell. I’m certainly willing to give Adam Rose a chance but his RAW exposure Monday night did not flip the switch for me just yet.”
