AJ Styles Wins IWGP Title, Becomes First American To Do So Since 2005

21

AJ Styles defeated Kazuchika Okada to capture the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at the New Japan Pro Wrestling Dontaku iPPV event on Saturday night. By winning the title, Styles became the first American wrestler to hold that particular belt since Brock Lesnar held it in 2005.

Ring Of Honor promoted the event on their official website and noted that the winner of the Styles vs. Okada match would defend the IWGP Championship against Michael Elgin at their “War of the Worlds” event on May 17th.

Styles tweeted the following photo of himself with the IWGP Championship backstage after the show:

  • WWE Stock Drops To Lowest Point Since Their Recent Big Rise

    2

WWE saw their stock fall to its’ lowest point since the big rise, dropping $1.50 per share today to close at $18.83 per share, the day after the company released their financials. By all accounts, yesterday’s results were better than projected by company guidance.

It should be noted, however, that releases today showed almost all core business metrics, with the exception of the WWE Studios movie division, down in profitability, even those that seemed stronger yesterday since they showed overall revenue increases. This means the profit decline was more than just losses suffered due to the launch of the WWE Network.

  • Chris Jericho Speaks On Sting To WWE, CM Punk Rumors, Paul Heyman & More

    7

The following are highlights of a new Digital Spy interview with Chris Jericho:

How did you feel about the end of The Streak and how it happened? “I loved it, I thought it was great. It was a legitimate shock, it got everybody talking. I think the right guy got it, if you’re going from a credibility standpoint, and if you’re going from a believability standpoint. As much as people and fans and journalists want to believe that it’s the case, I’m not sure if Undertaker had too many matches left in him. Maybe he doesn’t want to wrestle again. Maybe he knew that he couldn’t take any more.

“It’s a big, physical task to wrestle as it is, and once a year is hard. I wouldn’t want to come and wrestle just once a year. That’s even harder than wrestling 200 times a year, because your body’s not used to it. And the older you get, the harder it gets, the more the aches and pains kick in.

“Maybe The Undertaker decided that, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore’. And much to the fans’ chagrin, who wish that we would wrestle until the day we die at 90 years old and explode into a puff of dust in the ring, sometimes you’ve got to make that decision.

“If the time was now, Brock was the right guy for that day, and I thought it was amazing. And I would have hated it – hated it – if Undertaker would have retired without losing. I think that would have been a horrible way to go, I’m really happy that he lost The Streak.”

What do you think of the work Paul Heyman’s done in the last year, and especially since WrestleMania? “If it’s Paul Heyman you know it’s going to be good. He’s a master at writing promos, at delivering promos and getting an angle over. He’s just one of those talents that can do it all. It doesn’t surprise me in the least – as a matter of fact it surprises me that people are so surprised at how good it’s been.

“The WWE is always morphing and changing in a good way because you have younger guys that are coming in, you have guys that are finally having their chance and breaking through to the next level, and you’ve got guys like Paul Heyman that have been doing this for so long they know exactly how to handle things, exactly how to get things over.”

What do you think about the rumors of a CM Punk return? “I don’t know, man, who knows, right? That’s something that only he can answer for sure. To me, if he hasn’t come back already, then… I left the WWE for two-and-a-half years in 2005. The only difference was I left when my contract was up, but I disappeared too, because I just was over it. I couldn’t take it anymore, I wasn’t interested in being there, I was getting miserable, so I know how he feels.

“I had no intention of coming back, and after two-and-a-half years I watched Shawn Michaels vs John Cena at WrestleMania 23 and that inspired me to want to come back, but it took two-and-a-half years to get there.

“So my answer is, ‘I don’t know’, but I just know how I was when I did the same thing. It took a long time for me to be able to come back, and I was probably the same age as Punk is now too, so maybe he’s going through the same thing and after a few years he’ll come back.”

How would you feel about Sting joining the WWE in some capacity? “Personally I don’t really have any opinions either way. If he comes to the WWE, good for him, it’s great. I saw him a couple of times in TNA and you know pretty much what he can do at this point in time. He is a legend and to have him come to the WWE for the first time would be great, but after a week or two what’s he going to do there?

“If you’re a hardcore fan it might be cool – for me it doesn’t really matter either way; if that’s what he wants to do then good for him, and I hope he shows up. And if not, then I don’t think it’s going to make a difference either way in WWE business. It’s not 1998 anymore, you know.”

On if he’d like to have Eve Torres on the Ross Report: “It could and I’d enjoy it as well. TBD.”

On if top MMA heavyweights from this era could beat up Haku: “Hmm, I havent heard those rumors but they sound like figments of someone’s imagination. Where were these yarns printed? The answer is in a bar or in the street your assumption is likely inaccurate.”

On his blogs and regular Q&A updates at JRsBarBQ.com: “My time, repetitive questions, one persona submitting multiple questions in one day all factor in. Plus, I like when people are honest and let me know that hey use our products. There’s little reason to devote all the time to the blogs and Q&A’s if we aren’t monetizing the effort and time selling some of our products. Plus, I don’t like to delve too deeply into questions that are so subjective that they have no right or no wrong answers. It’s futile to address. Some I eliminate simply because they are embarrassingly illogical or profane.”

On working with “Macho Man” Randy Savage: “Randy was very unpredictable and could be volatile at times. He did not trust many people but was a very charismatic and talented man.”

On pro wrestling rankings: “Ranking pro wresting within a company would still work and wold add realism to the equation.”

On Chris Benoit’s son Daniel entering the wrestling business: “Mixed feelings and I don’t know what to expect from this matter. I know that his journey like most others won’t be easy.”

  • Scott D’Amore Speaks On Creating Knockouts Division, Edge, WCW/TNA & More

    2

The following are highlights of a new VOC Nation interview with Scott D’Amore:

On his favorite promotion to work for, WCW, & TNA: “I mean, if you’re talking about as far as for the professional fulfillment, it would have to be TNA. Because, obviously, I was pretty deeply involved there, having headed the creative team & been pretty deeply involved for the better part of wrestling for about 8 years. So certainly professionally & financially, that was by far the best run of my career. Everyone says they want to be a booker. That’s when I learned I really enjoyed the TV aspect of it. I had Jody Hamilton. He kind of the first person to really help teach me something as far as what goes on & into producing a wrestling TV show.”

On the Canadian Destroyer [flip piledriver]’s origin & his student, Petey Williams: “Well, it’s kind of funny in the wrestling business. There’s all this talk about how everybody steals things & everybody takes credit for this or that. It always seems it’s never the guy that gets the credit. Personally, I did not ‘invent’ the Canadian Destroyer. From my understanding of things, it was basically created because Chris Sabin, who’s another one of our graduates, used to take like a Frankenstein-er but backwards. The guy would actually jump off the rope backwards & basically backflip moonsault into taking a hurricanrana. So, then the thought process was, from there, they came up with it on a road trip. It was a move that basically anybody could do to Chris Sabin because he liked taking that backflip bump. When we got Petey Williams to TV, the guys were talking about different things as far as how to get Petey stand out. If i deserve any credit for creating the Canadian Destroyer because I wanted people to look at Petey & have people give a “holy sh*’ reaction, have him do the flip piledriver.”

On trust & today’s wrestlers in wrestling industry: “There’s a lot of things in wrestling that are trust-based. You’re giving your body to your opponent & trusting that he’s not going to knock you out or really hurt you or injure you. Certainly, a move like the Canadian Destroyer, there’s a lot of faith. That’s basically what our business is built on. You give somebody your body & they give you theirs & when you do it right, you put on a fantastic athletic demonstration & entertain the Hell out of people. It’s amazing when you think about the unbelievable athletic feats that wrestlers pull off on a nightly basis. A lot of trust to have to go out there & perform. It’s amazing the wrestlers don’t get hurt. It’s a testament to the business. The guys right now are such phenomenal athletes. I think there are guys out there performing in the top level now are as good as an athlete as there’s ever been in wrestling. Much better than in some years past. I think as good as other athletes in different sports. Great caliber athletes right now.”

On creating TNA’s Knockout Division and working with Dutch Mantell: “We had a terrific group of girls who formed the Knockout Division. I really enjoyed working hand-in-hand with Dutch Mantel [WWE’s Zeb Colter] on the creative & producing side & helping structure & created that division from scratch. That was an amazing experience. I wasn’t in TNA from Day 1 so I didn’t get to experience that. I was there when we launched on Fox. I was the director of Creative when we went on Spike. That was awesome. Creative there to me was me & Dutch taking something that some people laughed at, which was saying we were going to present Women’s Wrestling in a serious tone… & it was going to be well-received. 97% of the credit goes to the girls & then probably 2.8% goes to it Dutch, & I’ll take the other .2%. I had a blast doing it. I enjoyed it. I worked my butt off trying to work for those girls & make sure we presented quality matches because some of them weren’t overly experienced so we really had to work. Learn everyone’s strengths & work really hard to hide their weaknesses. I think that me & Dutch & the whole group there did a fantastic job at doing that there for a couple of years when we first launched. ”

On Edge: “Adam [Edge] was very gracious in his DVD to even think of my name, that’s the kind of guy he is. Edge & Christian. Edge is a TV star now. He’s not going to be in the wrestling school teaching hip tosses but he’s always been supportive. He’s supporting wrestling & the community. I mean I remember Edge when he was at the height of WWE, calling a boy here in Windsor who went through some pretty heinous stuff & Edge couldn’t make it here to see the kid… That would have been fantastic but he couldn’t do it. He sent stuff to the kid & then, more importantly, spent time on the phone & talked to him”

    42

The following are highlights of a new Miami Herald interview with Ryback:

On the roller coaster ride of being a WWE Superstar: “I came in 2012 and burst on the scene. I believe I was the most popular thing. Before the ‘Yes Movement’, there was the ‘Feed Me More’ movement. I took the WWE by storm. I was undefeated for some time, sometimes taking on two guys at one time. I jumped in the main event scene very quickly and stayed very popular with the WWE Universe for a long time. We made the switch and went an opposite way and took it all away. Not that I necessarily agreed with it at the time, but I feel it was a good move.”

On Ryback in and out of the ring: “Through Twitter and everything else like that I’m just myself. A lot of people like to see that. When I’m in the ring I’m very intense. I consider myself a modern-day gladiator when I go out there. Social media and things like WrestleMania Axxess, this is my whole personality. On TV you can only catch so much. When I’m in the ring performing I’m a gladiator. Outside of it is different. If look at guys like Kurt Angle, ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and The Rock, they were very diverse characters. Ryback is a very diverse character as well.”

On his time with Paul Heyman: “I got absolutely nothing [from that]. It’s a time period I will not even think to look back on.”

On Curtis Axel: “Curtis Axel is a great, amazing human being. Working with him is the most fun I’ve had in wrestling in some time. The only positive thing from Paul Heyman was getting to be around Curtis Axel and getting that out of it. Me and Curtis go back to developmental together. I’m very happy we are getting a chance to mesh and gel on TV and come together as RybAxel.”

    6

Kevin Nash recently spoke to The Chicago Tribune about his acting career and noted that he’s unsure as to whether or not he will have a role in the new Magic Mike sequel with Channing Tatum. Nash stated the following:

“I’ve got a small part in a Keanu Reeves movie called ‘John Wick.’ He plays a hitman in the movie and kills about 300 people. I don’t get killed, so I might get cut because of that,” joked Nash. “Other than that, I did this low budget horror movie where I played this giant vampire. The movie is called ‘The Association.’ They’ve had a bunch of legal problems. I think they finally got most of those hurdles taken care of, so that’ll probably be coming out. And then I’ve also got a pilot called ‘Tag Team’ that they want to shoot but they’re on rewrite because they can’t find the female lead, so they’ll probably go with two male leads. I hear so many things from my agency on a monthly basis. I did the (1992) movie ‘Freejack’ and was on the set 70 days. I went to the movie theater and never saw myself on the screen: ‘How is that possible? I was in four scenes. No wonder this movie went $40 million over budget.’ Until you see yourself on the screen, you didn’t make the movie. I don’t worry about it. If I never work again, I’ll be fine.”

    12

The official WWE website recently added a new featured article on ECW original Sabu called, “An extreme revolutionary: How Sabu changed wrestling and everyone forgot.” The article features comments from Paul Heyman, Rob Van Dam, John Cena, Seth Rollins and others.

Below is an excerpt from the article, which features Heyman talking about whether or not Sabu gets the credit he deserves.

“To this day, the innovator is still the master of his craft. When Sabu was at his best, no one could touch him.”

“Whether Sabu gets the credit in history he deserves, the answer is no. But who do you blame for that? Do you blame the curator of the industry, WWE, for not acknowledging the contributions that Sabu made? Do you blame Sabu for not staying healthy enough to force history to acknowledge his contributions? Do you blame the audience who only sings the praises of Sabu crashing through tables, and not all the many other ways Sabu was so unique at his height?”

“The reality of history is that others will take snippets of the style, incorporate it into another groundbreaking presentation and then get credit for implementing a new way to bring sports-entertainment to the masses.”
