  • Former WCW Referee Speaks On WWE Locker Room Conflict, WCW Issues & More

    3

The following are highlights of a new interview with former WCW referee Billy Silverman:

On the WWE Locker Room After Acquiring WCW: “It was just a different time. It’s just like anything in the real world I guess, per se, that everybody [was] worried about their jobs. There’s only so many jobs and there’s only so many positions. You’ve got 50-70 guys coming in and at some point [WWE] can’t carry that. So everybody was worried about their jobs, even the guys there. And the WCW guys coming in they were just trying to get a spot or keep a spot. It wasn’t a good time to be there. Everybody was worried about their job. Who might get cut, who might not get cut. There was a lot of animosity. Certain friends may not have been so much friends at that point. I just remember it being very much survival of the fittest … in the locker room. I just don’t remember it being a good time. But again, looking back on it, there were just circumstances beyond everybody’s control.”

Could Vince Have Saved WCW: “Do I think that Vince McMahon would have been the one [to keep WCW alive]? No, because he just produces a different kind of show. So I don’t believe that he could have kept WCW going. I think that Eric [Bischoff] was a creative genius, but I think [that] all that creative and all that genius somehow just kind of imploded. There was nobody there guiding the ship. There was never any one time where there was a captain, that was who the captain is, and that was who is in charge and we all have to go with the flow. That was always changing, constantly. There never any one influence where it was for a period of time. It just was always changing. So it was always so volatile.”

On WWE’s Attitude Giving it an Unfair Advantage: “WCW just could not do a lot of the content that WWF was allowed to do because Vince McMahon was there. We had a guy who used to be at the shows from the … Standards and Practice department to make sure we didn’t say certain words on the air … That thing with Mae Young and … Mark Henry … wouldn’t have flown in WCW. But Vince [McMahon] was on the end of the line I guess to approve that to let that go on TV, and he was on networks that were more progressive with language and nudity and content, whereas WCW didn’t have that latitude. We definitely pushed the envelope as much as we could, but I think that’s why WCW was so good as it was, because we had certain standards and practices to adhere to . So creatively we had to figure out how to compete with [WWE] and still be creative and innovative and new and fresh.”

  • Bob Holly Speaks On Undertaker’s Retirement, The Streak Ending, Roman Reigns

    64

The following are highlights of a new RossOwenWilliams.com interview with former WWE Superstar Bob Holly.

On Undertaker’s streak coming to an end: “I think it was the right move with the wrong guy. Brock is a part time guy who wrestles what? Three times a year? They could have used that slot to make somebody who is full time. I think people would have accepted that more and wouldn’t have been in as much shock if it had been somebody else.”

On Roman Reigns: “I think it would have been good to have Roman Reigns go over on Taker. I think they’re moulding their next big star there and it would have been perfect to have him work with Taker instead of Brock. That would have made Roman Reigns. Right into main event status. That would have made him and once he beat Taker, his next thing should have been Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan or John Cena. Go after one of those three.”

On Undertaker’s retirement: “You know, just because he lost at Wrestlemania, everyone is speculating that it was his last match. Nowhere does it say that it was his last match. He never came out and said “this is it”. That said, I don’t think a match with the part-timer was the way to go. If Taker had been in the ring with someone else, a guy who knows how to lead a match and tell a good story, I think that would have been a better fit for Taker, whether it was his last match or not.”

WWE Interviews The Kliq About Infamous MSG Curtain Call Incident

    11

The official WWE website recently interviewed all of the members of the infamous “Kliq” about the “Curtain Call” incident at Madison Square Garden in 1996. Below are some highlights of the interview.

WWE.COM: Did you guys plan The Curtain Call ahead of time or did it just kind of happen that night?

SHAWN MICHAELS: It was talked about in Europe then it was never talked about again. We had done a European tour, then we came back and had this last run. For us, not that we needed a reason to celebrate something, but everything was the last time we’ll be doing this, the last time we’ll be doing that.

KEVIN NASH: This may be the last time we’re in a Lumina van! We should really drink tonight.

    [Laughter.]

MICHAELS: Then, that night, as best as I can recall, it was Hunter coming up and going, “Hey, are we doing that thing we talked about?” I don’t think anybody remembered it.

NASH: I walked in and talked to Vince and Pat [Patterson]! You [points to Michaels] were with me and he said it was fine and we were supposed to go to [New York City steakhouse] Smith & Wollensky afterwards. And it just turned into a thing …

WWE.COM: Before we get into the fallout, let’s talk about the incident itself. What do you remember about that moment at the end of the night?

SCOTT HALL: I remember standing in the ring and we’re all there together. It was unheard of, but the people appreciated it. I remember looking at Kev, we’re all hugging and I remember thinking we all made it.

NASH: I remember — and I think we may have even said it in the ring that night — that we weren’t disbanding The Kliq.

MICHAELS: We were taking over the business.

NASH: We’re going to go down south and take over Ford Motor Company. You guys run GM and we’ll run the automobile industry.

MICHAELS: I remember Vince came up to me after and said, “Did that mean a lot to you?” I said, “Yes it did.” “Then it meant a lot to me.” And he was fine. It was fine that night.

  • Details On Financial & Critical Success Of “Oculus,” WWE Studios’ Plans For 2014

    3

The WWE Studios film “Oculus” opened at $12,005,402 for third place at the box office in its’ opening weekend, trailing only Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Rio 2.

The movie did 52-percent of its’ business in the under-25 age group. It received above-average reviews (71 percent positive) but average viewer responses (56 percent positive).

The feeling is the film needs to hold up well in its’ second week, as the following week another horror movie (The Quiet Ones) comes out and will likely hurt it. Regardless, the film is already likely profitable due to the fact that it was a low budget movie.

WWE Studios is planning on releasing eight-to-ten movies throughout the rest of the year.

Another match scheduled for the show is Big E. defending his WWE Intercontinental Championship against the winner of the ongoing contender tournament. The original plan was for Cesaro to win the tournament, and that may still be the case.

Other matches scheduled for the show include Evolution vs. The Shield, which was talked about as the official main event going into WrestleMania, Daniel Bryan vs. the masked Kane for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt in a steel cage match and Alexander Rusev in a squash match.

    43

As previously reported, Sting has yet to officially put pen-to-paper and sign a contract with WWE. Despite the fact that Sting hasn’t signed yet, which he hadn’t as of this past Tuesday night, the belief is there hasn’t been any significant snags in the negotiations, and that he will eventually sign and return the contract.

  • Kane vs. Bryan: Main Event Worthy?

    49

The Big Red Monster is back, and it appears he is on a collision course with Daniel Bryan. After reclaiming his mask last week on Raw, Kane vowed to take care of the WWE Champion and send him to the depths of hell.

In true WWE storytelling fashion, they had a Kane video package queued up and ready to go about five minutes later, leading me to believe that he will be featured prominently in the storyline in the coming weeks.

With Evolution set to take on the Shield at Extreme Rules and seemingly no other contenders in line, it appears that Daniel Bryan’s first pay-per-view title defense will be against his former tag team partner.

Kane has temporarily retired his suit in favor of his signature mask in an attempt to exact revenge.
Kane has temporarily retired his suit in favor of his signature mask in an attempt to exact revenge.

The thought of Kane headlining a pay-per-view in 2014 and competing for the WWE Championship could leave some fans scratching their heads, but I believe it could work well if planned appropriately. With other storylines, particularly the Shield/Evolution program, eating up a good portion of the main event roster, creative was left with few options for Bryan’s matchup at Extreme Rules.

Randy Orton still holds a rematch clause but is fighting with Evolution, not to mention that Orton/Bryan headlined three pay-per-views last year and most fans would like something fresh. I think Brock Lesnar is being built up to eventually challenge Bryan for the title, but it would be too soon and neither superstar could afford a loss immediately following WrestleMania. Lesnar needs to continue winning to validate his win against the Undertaker and Bryan cannot lose the title just one month after finally winning it. A no contest would also leave the crowd unsatisfied with the outcome.

Therefore, I think Bryan and Lesnar will both be built up over the coming months to set up a blockbuster showdown at SummerSlam. Bryan’s first victim will almost assuredly be Kane. It is no secret that Kane is past his prime, but he can still put on a decent match if paired with the right opponent.

At the very least, the two have been involved with one another in the storyline over the past several months and creative can rely on that to tell a decent story. It certainly works a little better than randomly choosing someone like Sheamus or Alberto Del Rio to challenge for the title.

Mick Foley Talks About CM Punk Leaving WWE

    46

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley posted the following on Facebook regarding CM Punk’s decision to leave WWE, noting that Punk was in “considerable pain” for the past three years:

“Yes, the response to that funny photo of CM Punk on a milk carton was incredible. While I respect everybody’s opinion – as long as it is given in a respectful way, I have to disagree with those out there who find great fault in Punk’s simply walk away. I am kind of like a ghost that drifts in and out of WWE, but in my past three years of drifting, I have never been to a WWE event where Punk was not in considerable pain. Ice packs, heating pads, and visits to the trainer were as much a part of his daily routine as eating. sleeping, and wrestling. Performing at that level, in that degree of pain was only possible when accompanied by the passion that turned an unlikely Indy kid into one of the greatest WWE superstars of his generation. Once that passions gone, then so are all of the things that made him great. I know what it feels like to go through the motions, and to do what needs to be done solely for the paycheck. It’s not pretty – and though I have not talked to Punk since the night before he left, I have to believe he has too much respect for what he does to let people see him going through the motions. If or when that day comes when CM punk returns to WWE, I hope it’s with that same passion that made so many of you care about him to begin with.”

Former WWE/WCW Star Shares His Memories Of The Ultimate Warrior

    14

The following are highlights of an Under The Mat Radio interview with Fred Ottman, who portrayed former WWE characters Tugboat and Typhoon, but is best known as failed WCW gimmick star “The Shockmaster.”

On his memories of Ultimate Warrior: “He was a good guy, excellent and tremendous guy. He was business 100-180 percent and people loved him, he had a good heart. I did shows with him in the WWF and it’s just really sad you know he’s a young guy…he left his wife, his mom, and his precious daughters.”

On working with Ultimate Warrior in the ring: “Me personally no I couldn’t give you any (stories of working with Warrior in the ring) I just was able to observe him at that time but I enjoyed watching his work with a multitude of different guys. When that music hits he would hit the ground running and it was a 150 percent till the end of the match.”

On the way Ultimate Warrior’s passing was different than his other friends in the business: “Well you know you got to take into effect that when he was there he was as popular and as on the same level as Hulk (Hogan) was. The people loved him, they like his look and his energy. I have mixed emotions about…I have a lot of friends and a lot of guys that all of them should be honored..we only going by a few small glimpse of wrestling history”

WWE Superstars Tell Hotel Horror Stories

    27

SBNation.com recently interviewed various WWE talents about their worst ‘hotel horror stories.’ Here are some highlights from:

Jim Ross: “It’s ranged from turning the sheets back and finding someone’s … deposit. Someone actually used the restroom in the bed and then remade the bed. And it was … it wasn’t funny. That was in [New] Jersey, I think. Then the other stuff is simple. I had a hotel room in Manchester, England, that would have been too small for Hornswoggle. I was hanging everywhere. They had a TV with a screen the size of my iPad. They had a desk, that you could work at the desk, but the room was so small, the desk didn’t have room for a chair. So you had to sit on the end of the bed to reach over to your desk to do your work.”

Christian: “I actually had one … It was in, I think, Biloxi, Miss., and the valet lost my rental car. I’ll never forget that. I’m standing there and it’s just like, “Yeah we can’t find it.” I’m like, “How do you lose a rental car?” Took about an hour and a half, but they finally found it. I guess they misplaced it somewhere, but it was pretty funny there for a few minutes.”

Dolph Ziggler: “One time, Motel 6, but the lock had been busted off a bunch of times and it looked like they just kind of painted over it, so the door would just come right open and it was really cheap. Bad part of town, shady characters outside the window — it’s ground-floor — doing who knows what. So I took the chair from the desk and I propped it under the door and I pushed the bed to the other side of the room and I slept sitting up with my clothes on, waiting for the door to come unjammed.”

Lacey Von Erich Talks About Warrior Memories, Wrestlers Battling Demons

    17

Former TNA star Lacey Von Erich and her mother Cathie were on Blue Steel Cage Radio with Carmine Sabia to talk about her legendary father Kerry Von Erich and her earliest memories of Warrior, one of Kerry’s best friends. Lacey also talks the pressures of being in a  wrestling locker room, being a third-generation star, and trying to balance acting and other endeavors.

Blue Steel Cage Radio airs Friday nights, 9 PM ET on the VOC Nation Radio Network and is now available for download on vocnation.com. Call in (855) VOC-RADIO.

Becoming a Wrestler: “If you never want to have a family or a wife or time to yourself, and you like being verbally and mentally abused, then you should [get into wrestling]. I say go for it. [That abuse comes more from] the locker room. Definitely the locker room. TNA is very different than WWE. WWE was very political. I wasn’t in there yet. They were like, “You’re a Von Erich. You better be amazing at wrestling,” and things like that. And I wasn’t. I’m more of an actress than I am a wrestler. I’d rather play a character than get hurt on the mat. That’s what I’m better at. I’m better at acting. That’s what I wanted to do. Vince called me. He’s the one that got me into this. He’s the one asked me, “Do you want to be a wrestler? Try to be a diva?” He brought me out and and I signed the contract that night and went into training. I wasn’t expecting it to come as much. It really blew up and they expected so much of me. But then TNA called and they really embraced me as like a family member.”

Wrestlers Battling Demons: “It’s so hard to leave [wrestling]. It’s really hard, once you leave, because no one ever understands what you went through ever. No one will know … People screaming your name or having fans and having those experiences together. Going from hotel to hotel, being on the road together. No one knows those experiences but [other wrestlers]. It really shapes the kind of person you can be. As you can see, in the past, [with] wrestlers, it can either shape you to be a great person and you can learn from it and become a great wife and mother, which I hope I have. Or you can end up self-medicating because of all that. You either get stronger or you get weaker. And luckily I came out of it, unlike the rest of my family, a stronger, better person.”

Her Earliest Memories of The Warrior: “My mom was just telling me that my dad actually trained [Warrior] … I was really young when my dad passed away. I was only 6 years old, but a lot of those memories have been grained in my mind because of the traumatic experience I went through. A lot of things when it comes to wrestling I don’t remember, because when we went to wrestling matches it would be 10, 11 o’clock at night and we would just be asleep in the stands … I remember more of Uncle Jimbo [Warrior] off of wrestling, not actually on the mat with everyone. I remember him at his house, and babysitting us, and things like that. It was like being babysat by my dad. Basically the same. A lot of roughhousing. A lot of fun.”
