    Ultimate Warrior Tribute

RAW opens live in the building where we see all of the WWE Superstars and WWE Divas standing on the stage. The titantron has a huge “in memory of” graphic. Michael Cole says tonight we will pay tribute to one of the greatest WWE Superstars of all-time. In the ring, Jerry Lawler introduces an Ultimate Warrior video package. After the video package, Lawler asks us to give a moment of silence as we toll the bell ten times. The bell is rung ten times as we see closeup shots of everyone on the stage, including Vince McMahon. Warrior’s music hits and the talent on stage lead the fans in a “Warrior” chant. We get some announcements informing us some of the matches scheduled for tonight and then we head to our first commercial break of the evening.

    Intercontinental Title Contender Tournament
    – Rob Van Dam vs. Alberto Del Rio

When we return from commercial, Justin Roberts introduces Alberto Del Rio, who is already in the ring. After that, Rob Van Dam’s music and he makes his way to the ring for this first-round WWE Intercontinental Championship number one contender tournament match.

RVD’s music fades down and immediately the fans break out into a loud “RVD” chant. The bell rings and Del Rio goes right to work on Van Dam. RVD eventually gets the better of Del Rio, who takes a break outside the ring to recover. The fans explode in another passionate “RVD” chant.

Back in the ring, Del Rio regains control of the offense and is taking it to Van Dam as the announcers put over some of the other first round matches in this tournament, all of which are scheduled to take place on tonight’s show. We see a shot of Big E. backstage watching the match. Meanwhile, Van Dam begins firing up on offense, but is cut short by a huge clothesline from Del Rio on the floor. We head to a mid-match commercial.

When we return from commercial, Del Rio remains in control of the former six-time I-C champ. We see some highlights of action that took place during the break. After that, Van Dam slightly botches a flying kick off the middle rope. Del Rio hits the Backstabber on Van Dam out of the blue for a near fall. Del Rio goes to the top-rope as another “RVD” chant breaks out. When Del Rio comes off the top, Van Dam catches him with a spin kick. Both guys are down.

We see another shot of Big E. looking on backstage as Del Rio continues his assault on Van Dam in the ring. Del Rio calls for his Cross Armbreaker. He goes for it, but Van Dam reverses into a scissor takedown into a pin attempt. He only gets two. Van Dam goes to the top and hits his Five Star Frogsplash. 1-2-3. Van Dam wins and advances in the tournament.

Winner and advancing in the tournament: Rob Van Dam

Backstage: Batista, Randy Orton & The Authority

After the match, we get a recap video of what went down last week between Triple H, Randy Orton, Batista and The Shield and Daniel Bryan. After that, we see Batista and Randy Orton entering Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s office. They talk off-mic amongst each other and then we fade away. The announcers again talk about the legacy of Ultimate Warrior, and then they introduce a clip of Warrior from SummerSlam 1988.

Backstage: The Authority, Batista & Randy Orton Again

When we return from commercial, we see another glimpse into The Authority’s locker room, where Batista and Randy Orton are still standing. Triple H mentions that Daniel Bryan isn’t here tonight, but they have a bigger problem, which is The Shield. He says The Shield reminds him a lot of “us,” referring to Evolution. He says he’s not sure if anybody can stop them. Stephanie McMahon says she does, and she’s looking at them, again referring to Evolution. Triple H reiterates that when the three of them are on the same page, no one can stop them. Batista says that’s great, but he just wants to be champ. Orton agrees with Dave on this one, and informs Hunter that he’s on his own. They walk off.

Goldust & Cody Rhodes vs. Ryback & Curtis Axel

After the backstage segment we hear Goldust’s theme, as we see he and Cody Rhodes entering the ring. Already in the ring is the team of Ryback and Curtis Axel. The bell rings and Goldust and Axel start things off for their respective teams. Goldust takes the early offensive advantage and then tags in his little brother. Rhodes comes in and picks up where Goldust left off, taking it to Axel in the middle of the ring.

Cody drops an elbow to the arm of Axel. Cody hits a front suplex and rolls Axel up for a one count. Cody starts concentrating on the left arm of Axel. Goldust now tags back in. Goldust connects with a shot to the gut and drops an elbow for another one count. Axel fights back with a knee to the gut followed by a headbutt. Goldust hits the ropes and connects with his uppercut. Goldust goes after Ryback and Axel attacks him from behind. Axel lands in some stomps and tags in Ryback. Ryback and Axel hit a double clothesline in the corner and Ryback covers for a two count. Ryback chokes Goldust on the middle rope then hits some shoulder tackles in the corner.

Ryback hits a scoop slam and goes to the middle rope. He tags in Axel and Ryback hits a splsh. Axel comes off the middle rope with an ax handle and covers for a two count. Axel hits a knee to the gut then tags Ryback back in. Ryback hits a back kick and covers for another two count. Ryback now locks in a rear chin lock. Goldust fights back to his feet, but Ryback takes him back down and locks in the rear chin lock again. Goldust back to his feet against and lands some body shots, but Ryback whips him into the corner. Ryback charges and eats a back elbow by Goldust. Goldust makes the tag to Cody.

Cody fights off a gorilla press and lands a right hand. Cody goes to the top and hits a moonsault on Ryback. Ryback rolls to the outside. Cody spring boards to the top rope and hits a splash on the outside to Ryback. Ryback back in the ring. Cody hits a spring board drop kick for a near fall. Axel low bridges Goldust out of the ring and eats a disaster kick for his troubles. Rhodes goes for the Disaster Kick, but misses and Ryback ends up nailing him with the Meathook Clothesline. 1-2-3. RyBaxel wins. We head to commercial.

    Winners: Ryback & Curtis Axel

    WWE Divas Championship
    – Paige (c) vs. Alicia Fox

When we return from commercial, a new “Bo-Lieve” promo airs. After that, the new WWE Divas Champion Paige makes her way to the ring. Already in the ring is her opponent for tonight, Alicia Fox. Footage airs last week of Paige winning the title over AJ Lee.

The bell rings and our Divas Championship match is now officially underway. Fox gets the upper-hand straight out of the gate as the announcers bicker back-and-forth for the first time tonight. Fox dominates Paige for several minutes and then the Divas Champion turns things around with a big kick.

Paige enjoys a series of offensive attacks and then locks Fox in a weird submission-type move. Fox has no choice but to tap out. Paige gets the submission victory and retains her WWE Divas Championship.

Winner and STILL WWE Divas Champion: Paige

  • Looking Back At Ultimate Warrior’s 5 Greatest Matches

    8

On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, the professional wrestling world lost another one of the greats. The Ultimate Warrior, who for millions of fans who jumped on the pro wrestling bandwagon during the late 1980s boom period, was among the biggest and most recognizable Superstars in history. Today, we are going to look back at five matches that helped establish Warrior as the undeniable legend that he became.

It’s no secret that Ultimate Warrior wasn’t what one would call a “catch-as-catch-can” classic type of in-ring performer, but if you look back at his career from an unbiased point of view, there were certainly some diamonds in the rough. He had some great moments in the ring, and at times was absolutely more than just “a cool ring entrance.”

WWE SummerSlam 1988 (vs. The Honky Tonk Man)

On August 29, 1988 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, The Ultimate Warrior captured his first WWE Championship. In just 31 seconds, Warrior ended The Honky Tonk Man’s legendary 454-day reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion.

Going into the show, which was actually the inaugural edition of what became WWE’s annual summer tradition, Honky Tonk Man was originally supposed to square-off with Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake. Beefcake ended up on the sidelines, however, and it was announced, live during the show, that Honky Tonk Man would still have an opponent and would still be defending his title.

To make a long story short, the infamous guitar riff hit the big speakers, thousands of fans in MSG exploded, and 31 seconds later, Warrior’s first WWE title reign began. History was made.

WWE SummerSlam 1989 (vs. “Ravishing” Rick Rude)

Nearly a year later to the day, Ultimate Warrior found himself capturing WWE Intercontinental gold once again at WWE’s SummerSlam pay-per-view. Several months prior, Warrior suffered his first official defeat in WWE at the hands of “Ravishing” Rick Rude, who was arguably Warrior’s best in-ring opponent.

    This was the rematch.

The bout took place on August 28, 1989 at The Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It was the second annual WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view event.

In what turned out to be a pretty good little contest, Warrior prevailed and in the end, managed to get his hand raised and once again become the WWE Intercontinental Champion.

WWE Tag Team Division: On the Back Burner

    25

Near the end of last year, it appeared the WWE would once again focus on promoting its tag team division. After the championships were practically ignored and bounced around between random teams that were comprised of young talent for over a year, Team Hell No helped legitimize the titles once again.

Kane and Bryan held the titles for nearly a year before eventually dropping the straps to Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. The division picked up even more after the Shield got their hands on the titles and was straight up stacked for months. At one point the company was even relying a lot on six-man tag matches just to get as many guys as possible on the broadcast.

Team Hell No helped spark fan interest after a dull period in the tag division.
Team Hell No helped spark fan interest after a dull period in the tag division.

Near the end of last year, the Rhodes Brothers, the Shield (Rollins and Reigns), the Wyatt Family (Harper and Rowan), the Real Americans, the Usos, the Prime Time Players, and the New Age Outlaws were all in contention for the Tag Team titles at some point.

Since then, nearly every one of those teams has fallen off the face of the Earth, save the Usos who are now the champions. The Rhodes Brothers are barely competing together, the Shield is beyond competing for the championships at this point, the Wyatt Family has been involved in other affairs, both the Real Americans and Prime Time Players have split, and it appears the New Age Outlaws do not want to exercise that rematch clause after all.

The dissolution and promotion of various teams has resulted in the tag team division entering into a transitional state where the company needs to develop new teams or promote others from NXT. Think about the current teams on the roster. We have the Usos who are obviously champions, but who are their challengers? The only other teams even on the roster are Los Matadores, Ryback and Axel, and 3MB, unless I am forgetting someone.

Jeff Jarrett Allegedly Involved In Physical Altercation At Indy Event

    14

According to Examiner.com, Global Force Wrestling founder Jeff Jarrett was involved in a physical altercation at an indy show over the weekend involving the son of IWA Mid-South promoter Ian Rotten over money.

Jarrett was reportedly given half his appearance fee when he arrived at the show and was told he’d receive the remaining balance within 2-3 days. This sent Jarrett into a rage, where is he alleged to have been screaming and cursing at many in the locker room and then directed his rage against the 17 year old son of Rotten, John Calvin.

Eye witnesses say Jarrett either slapped John Calvin and knocked his glasses off or snatched them off his face during his rant and attempted to “hold them hostage to the point of breaking them,” before calming down.

“Jeff and Karen Jarrett were both intoxicated,” promoter Ian Rotten said. “I have a locker room full of people to back me up on that.”

Rotten has a spotty reputation when it comes to paying talent, with one indie veteran saying, “He is never going change brother, hell, he still owes me $50 from a show,” an indie veteran said.

“I am embarrassed,” Rotten said. “I know it sounds incredibly stupid but we forgot to get the advance out of PayPal.”

One wrestler, who asked not to be identified, said Jarrett was “out of control.”

“Jeff Jarrett will get his money in a couple of days as promised and he can use it for a defense attorney because I will be going to the sheriff tomorrow (Monday) to swear out a warrant for assault on a minor,” Rotten said.

Backstage Reaction To WWE Network Subscribers, Advice From Experts

    25

Last week, WWE announced that the WWE Network had signed up 677,287 subscribers since the launch on February 24th. The news sent WWE stock plummeting over 30% (currently trading under $21 as of Monday morning) and experts questioning whether WWE will in fact be able to reach 1 million subscribers by the end of the year.

According to industry sources, analysts were hoping for 1 million subscribers as of last week, with 850,000 seen as a baseline for what they’d be satisfied with. The actual figure of 677,287 was seen as acceptable, but a disappointment for WWE.

Aside from expanding to international markets in late 2014/early 2015, the Motley Fool financial website is advising WWE to start looking for original drama series like ‘Breaking Bad’ to bolster the Network’s content offering beyond simply pro wrestling shows.

Jeff Jarrett Talks About Global Force Wrestling

    6

Jeff Jarrett recently spoke to The Tennessean and commented on his new Global Force Wrestling promotion.

Jarrett continues to tout that the wrestling business is on the verge of another boom period, which makes it an opportune time for him to launch the new company.

“Our world is getting so much smaller with technology and we live off our phones, so information is shared instantaneously,” Jarrett said. “That’s right up wrestling fans’ alley, so they can swap stories from around the world.

“Wrestling, I wouldn’t say it left mainstream over the last 10 years, but it certainly wasn’t as prominent as it was in the late ’90s. I think it’s really about ready to step back into the mainstream.”

  • Jim Ross Blog: Is JR Retired From Broadcasting?, Sting/WWE, Ross Report, More

    6

The following are highlights from a new Jim Ross blog:

On Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley: “Looks like Manny Pacquiao will live to fight another day after a unanimous decision win over Tim Bradley Saturday night. Manny seemed to be in a must win situation as it relates to big money fights and to keep the faint hope alive that he may someday fight Floyd Mayweather. If pro boxing doesn’t include either Mayweather or Pacquiao in the conversation in some form, it seems as if the casual boxing fan isn’t overly engaged.”

On his upcoming “RINGSIDE” show in Toronto: “The Toronto media is embracing our show coming to TO on Friday May 9 at the Danforth Music Hall for one show only. I will let you know what we have planned once every thing is finalized but to say that we are going to be busy promoting the event would be an understatement.”

“Tickets for the Friday May 9 event are on sale at ticketmaster.ca and only a limited number of VIP Meet and Greet tickets remain. We will do the TO Meet & Greets with photo and autograph opportunities BEFORE our show in Toronto.”

“Our event is the night before the ROH-New Japan show in Toronto on Saturday May 10 of which I plan on attending as a fan.”

On his recent Ross Report podcast with Jake Roberts: “My interview with Jake Roberts that is airing now on the Ross Report Podcast has received amazing feedback especially from some of the many wrestlers and would be wrestlers who have heard it. Jake’s take on today’s in ring product, how it can be improved and the nuances of being a hero or a villian in the TV wrestling world are excellent. It’s like going to a college class on how to be a successful pro wrestler.”

On whether or not he has broadcasted his last event: “Not sure why but I’ve been getting an inordinate amount of Tweets @JRsBBQ and emails here at our Q&A section of the site asking if I have broadcast my last event. My best guess is no, or is it wishful thinking, but it likely won’t be where one would assume. If the answer ends up being that I’m done broadcasting live events then so be it as I lived my dreams and had a wonderful ‘run’ for which I’m thankful. The competitor/performer in me still feels that there is some unused fuel left in the tank. Things will become clearer in a few months as I’d love to try some thing new.”

On Sting to WWE: “Regarding Sting, I assume that he hasn’t signed with WWE only because WWE hasn’t announced it. Signing Sting would create positive news for WWE as he is a major star that WWE can monetize in a variety of ways if he comes aboard. I don’t see Sting even needing to wrestle to be a viable asset to WWE if he does sign with the company. If Sting did have one match it WWE it would need to be a long build, much anticipated one that has a significant payoff at a major event more specifically WM31.”
