Chicago Newspaper Takes A Look Back At CM Punk’s Time With A Backyard Wrestling Promotion

6

Hyping CM Punk’s much-anticipated return to the squared circle on Sunday night at WWE Payback, the Chicago Tribune has published an article profiling his first wrestling venture; a stint in the late 1990’s for a backyard wrestling promotion called Lunatic Wrestling Federation. The organization is where the WWE Superstar debuted his CM Punk persona.

The head of the defunct promotion, Larry Statkus, who goes under the name “Billy Whack,” noted to the publication that he met Punk and his older brother Mike at a comic book store where Statkus worked. Punk and his older brother subsequently joined the promotion as wrestlers, but the brother relationship dissolved after he discovered that Mike had embezzled thousands of dollars from the small company, causing them to become estranged. Punk told the Tribune last year, “the only thing my brother ever did to me was steal a (crap) load of money from me.”

When WWE released the CM Punk – Best in the World DVD and Blu-ray last year, Statkus was concerned that Punk would disparage Lunatic Wrestling Federation. However, that was not the case.

“He was very positive about LWF stuff,” said Statkus.

In recent years, Statkus has attempted to reach out to Punk through social media network Twitter, but has not heard back. Nonetheless, he is happy for his former colleague’s success.

“I honestly think his promos are fantastic. His wrestling is fantastic. It’s great. It’s just bittersweet,” Statkus said. “You want to be proud but you can’t talk to the guy anymore.”

According to the article, a WWE spokesperson said Punk could not be reached for comment on Statkus.

Who Gamblers Are Betting On For WWE Payback, The Shield’s Most Brutal Attacks, Sherri Martel

23

– Gambling lines for tomorrow night’s WWE Payback pay-per-view event have skyrocketed in recent days, with Alberto Del Rio being favored 17 to 1 to defeat Dolph Ziggler in the World Heavyweight Championship Match. Betting odds are also in favor of Curtis Axel claiming the WWE Intercontinental Championship from Wade Barrett in a three-way affair also including The Miz, as well as AJ Lee defeating Kaitlyn for the WWE Divas Championship. In the Three Stages of Hell Match, Ryback is favored to win the Lumberjack Match, with John Cena taking the Tables Match and subsequent Ambulance Match to retain the WWE Championship.

– WWE counts down The Shield’s most brutal attacks since the group’s inception in this “Top 10” video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT9hKBiIbWg

– Six years ago today, WWE Hall of Famer “Sensational” Sherri Martel died at her mother’s residence in McCalla, Alabama. A toxicology released later that year stated that she died of an overdose with multiple drugs in her system, including high amounts of oxycodone.

Former NWA World Women’s Champion Tiffany Roxx posted this message in remembrance of Martel, “RIP Sensational Sherri. You were one of my biggest inspirations and I’m still learning from your work.”

MAILBAG: Do You Think TNA Could Sell Out Madison Square Garden?

18

SEScoops Mailbag for May 24th

Got a Question? Submit it with your name to: [email protected]

Q: Do you think bringing War Games into WWE could [restore] Survivor Series to its once prestigious state? – Kenny B.

A: Absolutely and it’s an idea I first pitched on the Sound Off years ago. It even fits perfectly with the whole theme of survival. Apparently, Triple H is a big supporter of the idea, but Vince McMahon has shot it down every time it has been brought up. If you’re a War Games fan, they are releasing a DVD devoted to those matches later this month.

Q: Do you believe an American promotion (besides ROH) would benefit from a partnership with a major Japanese promotion such as New Japan Pro Wrestling or NOAH? – Casey C.

A: While I think WWE has conditioned its audience to not take any Japanese talent seriously, I’d love to see them work something out with New Japan. If for no other reason than, selfishly, I would love to see a Daniel Bryan vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi match.

Q: Do you think TNA can have a PPV or Impact show inside a sold out Madison Square Garden? – Letago M.

A: I’m pretty sure WWE has a deal with MSG that would prevent another pro wrestling group from running there, so no. Even if they don’t, the answer is still no.

Q: I was just wondering why WWE feels like they have to have John Cena come out every week and recap everything that happened the week before? To me, it doesn’t really make his matches or rivalries anymore exciting. In fact, it kills any interest I have in them. – Gabe S.

A: I agree, it’s infuriating and I wish they would stop having him do that. He’s not a narrator, he’s an active wrestler. He should act like it.

Q: I have a question about Evan Bourne. When is he going to make his comeback to WWE? – Luis A.

A: Bourne is cleared and ready to return whenever WWE has something for him. Ditto with Christian.

Q: I can’t help but marvel at how amazing Daniel Bryan is in the ring. He has an intensity in the ring that’s damn near unrivaled with the ability to have great matches with pretty much anyone. However, one thing that I’m surprised about is that WWE still allows him to use the diving headbutt. With all the emphasis on safety and impact testing, you’d think the diving headbutt would go the same way as the piledriver. Given everything that we know today about long term affects of concussions, should WWE ban Bryan from using this move? – Matt I.

A: I see your point about Bryan using his head as a weapon, but to ban the move? Where do you draw the line? I’d argue his tope dive through the ropes is far more dangerous. Taking a German suplex where you land on the back of your head and get folded up like an accordion… isn’t that worse? They’re certainly not going to ban that, nor should they. Every move or slam carries an inherent risk of injury. I trust that someone of Bryan’s experience level knows what he’s doing and does what he can to limit the risk of injury to himself and his opponent.

Q: Why did Roddy Piper and Mr. T have legit heat and do they still have a beef with each other? – Ravonn A.

A: Because Mr. T acted like a total diva when he worked with WWE and nearly walked out of the first WrestleMania at MSG. Pretty sure Piper still hates his guts.

Sean Waltman Talks Working With Shane McMahon At WrestleMania XV, Being Pushed As The 1-2-3 Kid

4

Sean Waltman discussed his career with Inside The Ropes this past Thursday as he promoted the Viva L.A Lucha Kickstarter campaign (details available here). Highlights from the interview are as follows:

On his huge promotion upon his arrival to the WWF in 1993 as the 1-2-3 Kid, compared to talent receiving opportunities today: “Okay, they were pushing me, but this is what I don’t understand. There’s some guys now who are getting their opportunities and doing a lot with them, but you can’t push something that doesn’t propel itself. Sometimes you’re limited to what you are talent wise. My angle was really unique when I came in. Usually a guy would come in with vignettes and then win some squash matches and get over that way. They seemed to have a well thought out plan for me. Plus the angle with Razor and I was the first storyline they ran on Raw so that was pretty cool.”

On being told he’s working with Shane McMahon at WrestleMania XV: “I didn’t like it going in, I was expecting to have this big WrestleMania match. But back then If something wasn’t my idea, I didn’t like it, even if it was a good one. I was a bit of a spoiled brat at the time. I remember thinking I wanted to have a really good WrestleMania match, but how was I gonna do that with somebody that’d never had a match before, but I told Vince y’know, he listens to me and I’ll do it but it’s my way. And the agreement was he’d do the job (laughs). But the overall picture of why we did the finish of the match, you know Hunter turned on me and a lot of good things came out of that. My team with Kane came out of that, Hunter’s big first championship run kinda came from that. I thought Shane did an amazing job, he really did. He rented the St Paul Civic Center, it had this little building that held 3-4,000 people called the Roy Wilkins Auditorium, he rented that and had someone in Detroit drive a ring and set it up in this empty building, so I’d go there and work out a match with him for WrestleMania. I wasn’t going anywhere on my days off. I thought that was really going above and beyond, sending a ring to Detroit, Shane and I ended up being pretty tight.”

Whether he watches TNA: “You know what I should, I really should, but I don’t. I don’t know why or what it is but it just doesn’t feel like must see TV to me.”

Thoughts on going down to NXT: “From where it was a couple of years ago it’s so much better, so much better. I actually think quite often it’s the best thing on TV. Sometimes I think the best stuff comes off of that show. Triple H is working closely with that too. ”

Waltman also discusses Bob Backlund, Kane, WCW, The Kliq and more. The full interview is available here.

Identity Of Fandango’s Original Dance Partner, SmackDown Backstage Fallout

9

The Buffalo News has revealed that Fandango’s original dance partner is 20-year-old college student/dance instructor Andrea Lynn.

Lynn revealed that she heard from WWE last month and was told that the creative team decided to go with Summer Rae as Fandango’s dance partner instead. However, she did note that the door is open for her to return some time in the future.

“They didn’t cut me off like, ‘We don’t want you anymore,’” she said. “They could call me next week, they could call me next year.”

She noted that she was not originally suposed to appear on WWE TV more than once, but prior to settling on Summer Rae, WWE decided to use Lynn severeal times because it would be too much of a hasstle to find a new dancer in every town they visited.

The Undertaker Talks About Why He Continues Wrestling

43

WWE legend The Undertaker recently took part in a rare out-of-character interview with The Houston Chronicle to promote SpurRaffle.com. After undergoing a series of surgeries over the past few years, the Dead Man explained why he continues to wrestle.

“Honestly, I love it, that’s why. I’ve got 26 years in the business and all these injuries, but WrestleMania has become so huge, it’s just hard to walk away from it. I want the audience leaving the stadium going ‘Wow!’ It’s a responsibility I have being a top dog in this business. The crowd will let me know when it’s time to leave. They haven’t yet.”

He also revealed that he agrees to wrestle at WrestleMania each year because he wants to please Vince McMahon.

“If I didn’t perform at WrestleMania, in some strange weird way, I’d feel like I was letting Vince McMahon down.”

What does the Undertaker do when he’s away form television for extended periods of time?

“I spend a lot of time with my family, my children. I also work on my horrible golf game. I love golf, but I’m awful. For some reason, I go out there and make myself miserable because I’m so bad it. But most of my time is spent healing up … so I can be the Undertaker again.”

Derek Bateman Talks About His WWE Release, A Typical Week At NXT & More

15

Former WWE superstar Derrick Bateman was recently interviewed by Wrestling Heels Radio. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

What a week at NXT is like: “Well, it’s a secret of the pros. I’m kidding, it’s pretty basic. Monday, Tuesday, you have a day of practice and then – back in the day it used to be Wednesday would be promo class or art of communicating, they like to call it. Thursdays would be a show at the arena and then Friday, Saturday maybe we have shows. If we don’t we might have a little practice and this would repeat every week. It’d be pretty much the same.”

What talent has to go through in promo class: “Real brief, just being able to communicate in a way that is current to how they would like it, current to the norm. So as opposed to back in the day of promo being a guy screaming about something and just basically telling a story with the amount of time you have. You just wanna tell a story, [which is] pretty much the gist of everything we do. We tell stories. Being able to communicate in a creative way certainly helps. The thing about a promo class is it’s a way you can try something, see if it works. If it works, cool. If it doesn’t, you can try something else and you kinda have free reign to pick and choose what you wanna do sometimes, and that’s always cool to have an open forum for your own amusement.”

His WWE release: “Yeah, I had a pretty – I don’t know how far it was, but I was doing the Mr. USA [promos], and had some guy on computer making those. That was something that was going to happen and almost didn’t a couple times, but unfortunately, in a Saturday Morning Slam match with Antonio Cesaro, I hurt my knee again and I had to have surgery on it. Then that match with Alex Riley was my first match back from having that surgery. So after the injury, you’re out of sight, you’re out of mind and things happen.

“There’s no regrets from me on my part of what I’ve done. I can regret getting hurt at an inopportune time or two, or I can regret maybe not pushing hard enough to talk to somebody. But I have really no regrets for anything I’ve done in the ring or outside of it, or the entertaining stuff I try to do. No regrets at all with that.”

Working for Vince McMahon: “Well, he’s always super busy with business and things at hand, like with Raw and Smackdown, but there were more than a few times I got to see him in Gorilla for NXT Redemption. I don’t know if you recall the time I had my mom there and was talking smack to Maxine, but walking out with my mom in Gorilla and you see the boss sitting there and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God is this really happening? That is insane!’ And you walk back and he’s laughing and, shoots ya a thumbs up, and that’s pretty much an awesome endorsement, and you’re like ‘cool.’

“As far as him being like hands-on with anything we did, he was busy with the real stuff but, I never had a bad experience with him. He was always super cool every time I got to talk to him and shake his manly hand, so no ill will.”

Final RAW Rating, Vince & Triple H On Next 2 RAW’s, Another G.I. Joe Movie

8
