Hernandez Talks About Breaking Into TNA, Career Highlights & More

1

TNA star Hernandez was recently interviewed by Houston Wrestling Radio. Here are some highlights from the interview.

On what made him became a fan of pro wrestling:
It was the Paul Boesch Houston Wrestling in the 80s. There you could see the Guerreros, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, Butch Reed, One Man Gang, you name it. All of the biggest stars were there back in the early 80s. It was awesome!

On getting his start in the south Texas indy scene: I got trained by Tugboat Taylor and his son, Chaz in the late 90s and I started with Texas All-Star Wrestling around 1999. Back then, everything was hot. WWE, WCW and ECW was really hot. And it all trickled down. We would be drawing 500 to 800 people. Back then I was “Hot Stuff” Hernandez and I wrestled this young man named Necro Butcher. We would draw 500 people for “Hot Stuff” vs Necro in a hardcore match.

On his pre-wrestling relationship with Necro Butcher: Before I was making a living in wrestling, from about 1995 til 2001, I was an impound manager for the Houston Police Department. If you got a DWI or got your car towed for warrants, they would tow your car to a lot and you would have to come to me. I worked my way up from the night shift to manager. So I needed a night manager. The one who got the job was Necro Butcher; So he was my night manager. So if you were drunk in a club and had your car towed for illegally parking and you were talking all kinds of crap on the phone saying you would beat us up and then you would come to get your car, and then there’s this big 6”5? white hippie waiting for you. It was a sight to behold sometimes. We would get lots of cars that were illegally parked from the Houston Rodeo too. We would have to deal with a hundred drunk cowboys a night! And they all want to fight over the phone until they see us in person. Everybody’s tough behind a phone or behind a keyboard.

On how he broke into TNA: I basically took chances. I was the top draw in Houston for two or three years. My pockets weren’t getting any bigger. And unfortunately for pro-wrestling, it’s not a team sport. If you want to make it, you have to go out there and take chances. Necro Butcher taught me that first-hand. He left Houston. He made his name on the east coast doing hardcore stuff. I did it the hard way. I went to Japan three or four times, I went to Mexico. I wrestled there with a mask when TNA called me.

His response to the question of who he would have liked to work with but hasn’t: I’m very blessed. The wrestlers I’ve wanted to work with so far, I’ve worked. I’ve got to work a singles match with Sting. I’ve worked with Kurt Angle. I’ve got to work with AJ Styles and Austin Aries. Those two, as far as putting matches together and working the crowd… and Bobby Roode, those three are the best in TNA. I had a match with Jeff Hardy. I’m a huge fan of lucha. I’ve had matches with Dr. Wagner, La Parka, Cibernetico, guys from AAA. Another guy I was really a fan of, some people like him, some people don’t like him, Mike Awesome from ECW. I got a chance to tag with him in Japan. My bucket list is pretty much done.

If he prefers wrestling singles or tag matches: When I first got into wrestling, I used to love singles because it’s just you verses one man and a ref. It’s just three guys to make one match. But then when I got on television I almost wrestled exclusively tag matches. And me and my brother, well we’re not brothers but he might as well be my brother, Homicide, We meshed so well that I’d rather tag with him than wrestle any other type of match.

On what are his favorite matches of his career: Bound For Glory 2006, me and Homicide and Konnan versus AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels. We won the tag belts back in the cage. That match put us on the map. And then in 2011 with me and Homicide there was a match that wasn’t seen by a lot. Ring of Honor made a special deal to have me go over there for one night only to wrestle Chris Hero and Claudio Castagnoli. It was at Manhattan Mayhem in March of 2011. We tore the house down. Nothing is better and nothing more rabid than being in front of that Ring of Honor crowd.

On his upcoming appearance for the Clutch City Productions Sports and Celebrity SuperShow on August 31st: I’ll be there from 10:00am to 2:00pm. I’ll be autographing pictures. I’ll be autographing whatever you have, I’ll also be having “SuperMex” t-shirts. You can’t miss it. It’ll be one of the few times in South Texas that’ll you get to see the backbone of nWo. Hall, Nash and X-Pac will be there. I’ll be there. Robbie E will be there. Tessmacher will be there. But just for the fact that Hall, Nash and X-Pac are there, you should go.

Bruno Sammartino Interview: Appearing In Upcoming WWE Game & At Live Events

1

WWE Hall of Famer Bruno Sammartino spoke to CBS Philly about his WWE Hall of Fame induction and says WWE is planning to feature him in an upcoming video game:

“I have to thank the WWE and Paul [Triple H] for that [his Hall of Fame induction,” Bruno said. “The [WWE] has a video game featuring me down the road, and they will ask me to make appearances here and there. That’s in their plans. I think it certainly would be fun to return to the cities I headlined one time.”

At this time, there’s no word on whether Sammartino will be one of the 8 remaining unannounced characters in WWE 2K14, but it seems logical.

He added that he’s especially looking forward to appearing in Philadelphia, close to where he lives in Pittsburgh.

“I would love to come back to Philadelphia. I say this sincerely, Philadelphia was one of my great towns. I love Philadelphia—and I used to go to Philadelphia every two weeks. I miss Philadelphia, and Philadelphia was always very flattering to me. I hope I can come back to Philadelphia.”

Update On Ric Flair/WWE Situation, New Steve Austin Show, Total Divas Rating

19

-Apparently the specific reasons Ric Flair had heat with WWE management stemming from the already infamous WWE2K14 symposium is because he blatantly buried Daniel Bryan, talked about wrestlers drinking too much and brought up TNA at a WWE event.

-Episode 39 of the “Steve Austin Show” podcast has been posted online. Fans can listen to the latest edition of the show, which features TNA Impact Wrestling star Samoa Joe, at PodcastOne.com.

-Episode four of WWE Total Divas, which aired at the same time the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view was going on, drew 1.35 million viewers. The figure marks a drop of 19 percent from the previous week, and the first time the numbers for the show have dipped since its’ premiere.

More Specific Details On The Brawl Involving Alberto Del Rio And Drew McIntyre

41

More details have come to light regarding the brawl that took place this weekend involving WWE Superstars Alberto Del Rio and Drew McIntyre.

Apparently the altercation took place at approximately 3:00am on Saturday. As the story goes, Del Rio and McIntyre went to an Irish bar together. Someone allegedly said something to the girl that McIntyre was with, which prompted Del Rio to step in. From there, somebody reportedly blind-sided Del Rio over the head with a bottle, and things escalated from there.

McIntyre came out of the fracas sporting a black eye, and Del Rio as well suffered a black eye, along with a lot of bad swelling and bruising in his face.

WWE Dominates Searches, Howard Stern Mocks Darren Young, Eric The Midget/Roode

42

-The number one overall most searched for item in the United States this past Sunday was “WWE.” On Saturday, the number one overall search in the U.S. was “UFC.” For those keeping track, more people searched for “WWE” on Sunday than “UFC” on Saturday.

-Mainstream coverage of the Darren Young situation continues, as the Howard Stern Show spent some time discussing it on their radio show this past Monday morning. Stern and his crew mainly took the opportunity to mock wrestling, noting it’s the perfect job for a homosexual because they are “half naked, oiled up guys who roll around on the ground together.”

-Speaking of the Stern show, on both Monday and Tuesday’s show, one of their “Wack Pack” characters, Eric The Midget (aka Eric The Actor) has been in somewhat of a “feud” with TNA Impact Wrestling star Bobby Roode. Roode has cut multiple promos on Eric, noting he’d like to beat his ass for being a miserable grump. He challenged Eric to come to Bound For Glory so he can kick his ass.

19

Former WWE Superstar Chris Jericho recently spoke with the folks at TheWrestlingMania.com about a number of topics, including his WWE career, his music and his new book. You can read highlights from the interview below:

On his WWE career and if he’ll ever return: “I’ll be back at some point. But it’ll only ever be on a part time basis. Backstage Reaction To The Finish Of The Main Event At WWE SummerSlam

42

Regarding the conclusion to the main event at SummerSlam, many backstage within WWE felt it was a fantastic way to finish the match. Others disagreed, feeling that Daniel Bryan should have won clean and have his moment. The general consensus is with that type of finish, Bryan is continued to fill the “underdog” position in the company, which they feel gives the fans a chance to really rally behind him even more as he continues his chase.

In addition to that, many felt it was somewhat awkward that Bryan wouldn’t kick out of the pin attempt by Randy Orton, considering how much time had passed between Triple H’s pedigree and Orton’s actual pin.

A few people also pointed out how ridiculous it is that a somewhat retired in-ring competitor such as Triple H, would have such a devastating finishing move that it basically out-did annything John Cena attempted in the match, in terms of getting the pinfall on Bryan.

Episode 4: “The “Fat” Twin”
Recap by Ryan Pike (@RyanNPike) for the Wrestling Observer

Nattie and Nikki wander into a lingerie store in whatever city they’re in. Nikki’s looking for something for her boyfriend, John Cena, and asks if Nattie wants to find something for her previously unmentioned boyfriend TJ. Unlike the other previously unmentioned boyfriends on this show, he’s a WWE superstar (Tyson Kidd). Nattie complains that since TJ had his knee injury, their sex life has gone down the tubes. Nikki decides to find something for Nattie to bring home to her man. Mission accomplished.

They’re in Kansas City this week for RAW. Backstage, Ariane admires Nikki’s fake boobs, which Nikki claims are “worth every penny.” Nikki mentions to Brie that she doesn’t understand why she hasn’t gotten some fake boobs, to which Brie glares and says that she’s fine. In a talking head, Ariane discusses her boob size, wishing she had bigger ones. Trinity explains that she thinks Ariane’s boobs are great. The four girls – the Bellas and the Funkadactyls – go to an autograph signing. During the signing, Ariane and Trinity continue discussing Nikki’s boobs. Sitting next to each other, Nikki and Ariane get super passive-aggressive, although Nikki had a tremendous line, pointing to her chest and proclaiming that “the champs are right here.” Trinity notes to Ariane that all the little girls they meet think she’s perfect. Ariane decides to make an appointment for a consultation.

Elsewhere in Kansas City, Bryan Danielson and Brie Bella are looking for something to eat. Brie wants to look her best for the SummerSlam photo shoot. Brie ponders about losing three pounds with a cleanse, while Bryan says he doesn’t think she needs to lose any weight. Over in Tampa, Nattie brings her lingerie home to TJ. Nattie explains that they’ve known each other for years. TJ is watching wrestling. Nattie notes that she’s been taking care of TJ during his recuperation, but is concerned some fire has gone out of their long (long)-term relationship. She emerges from a side room in her lingerie, but he barely bats an eye. Nattie wonders if she needs to dress up like Daniel Bryan for her man to notice her. I hope not. Nikki has breakfast with Eva Marie and JoJo, noting she feels she needs to keep an eye on the new girls – both to take care of them and to keep an eye on her competition. They discuss breasts and Instagram. Someone on Instagram called Nikki “the fat twin,” which makes her sad.

In San Diego, Bryan, Nikki and Brie have dinner. Bryan mentions that Nikki has dessert everyday. They make a big show of Nikki eating a weird sundae, and Brie gets in a dig about Nikki recently getting her own set of “twins” in a voice-over. Brie challenges Nikki to do a cleanse with her for 20 days, which includes no dessert and no alcohol. (“Does wine count as alcohol?”) Over in LA, Jon (Uso) and Trinity meet Ariane, who is carrying a small dog and dressed like she’s heading to the club. Trinity says she wants to bring Jon along for a male opinion, hoping to talk her out of her plan. Ariane and Trinity leave Jon in the waiting room and go meet a woman who had implants put in awhile ago so they can see how they look. The woman just whips her boobs out for the girls to inspect, prompting Trinity to retrieve Jon from the waiting room so he can see them too. He immediately blushes and covers his face with his hands and the girls all giggle. Everyone takes turns grabbing the woman’s fake boobs. This is the strangest thing I’ve ever seen on TV, but to be fair, I rarely watch E! Maybe this happens on here all the time. Jon returns to the waiting room, not knowing what to make of things. A doctor comes in with breast implants for Ariane to try out. She dances around with her implants down her top. The doctor says it would probably be about a month, maybe two, before Ariane can get back into the ring after getting implants.

Elsewhere, the Bellas get lunch at a juice bar. Brie says tough love is the best way to get Nikki in shape for the SummerSlam shoot. Brie loves her drink, while Nikki says it’s like drinking someone’s garden. Over in Tampa, TJ and Nattie go to lunch. Nattie mentions planning their wedding. TJ and Nattie debate what constitutes a small wedding, with Nattie noting she has 36 cousins and a wedding of 150 people. TJ asks if at this point, it’s just a piece of paper. Nattie complains in a talking head that TJ doesn’t care about their wedding. The Bellas drive around and discuss their cleanse. Nikki complains that she’s grumpy and hungry. Trinity and Jon hang out by the pool when Ariane shows up with her fake boobs and walks around in a bikini. Ariane says she’s committing to her “test drive” with her fake boobs. Ariane jumps into the pool and loses one of her implants. The girls laugh, as they learn that implants float.
Nikki and Brie hang out at Nikki’s apartment, again discussing their cleanse. Brie notes that Nikki is quiet and figures she’s up to something, finding an empty wine bottle in the trash. Brie’s mad at Nikki and the girls bicker. Nikki says she’s not fat, while Brie’s frustrated that her sister flaked out on their cleanse. Back in LA, Vincent returns, waiting to see Ariane’s new look. He’s excited and asks if he can name them. He’s like a kid at Christmas, naming the left implant Janice. Later, the Bellas arrive at the beach for the SummerSlam photo shoot. The girls bicker some more and Nikki walks off angrily.

In an odd bit of editing, we get a tease for a scene to come after the commercial break…and then cut immediately to that scene, with no actual commercial break. Anyway, the Bellas discuss how Brie’s criticisms make Nikki feel. Brie apologizes, saying she was probably projecting her insecurities. The girls make up and pledge to rock the shoot. Then we get a nice video montage of them rocking said shoot. Brie says she’s fine if the Bella twins don’t look identical, as they’re not clones – they’re twins. Back in Tampa, TJ says he has a surprise for Nattie and they go for a car ride. Nattie’s excited. They arrive at the courthouse, saying they can get the marriage done right then. She gets mad at him and says he’s not romantic, saying he pays more attention to the cats than he does to her. She says she’s not even getting married to him. After a commercial break, the couple continues to bicker.

Meanwhile, it’s time for RAW at an unidentified city. Ariane continues goofing around with her implants, even showing them off to Sandra the seamstress and asking her to sew them into her outfit. Trinity is worried that this will make the two of them look silly. Despite the exterior shot of the arena being from Raleigh’s PNC Arena, the girls are talking outside the Calgary Flames locker room entrance. Sandra encourages Ariane to get fake boobs. Later on, Ariane grabs her gear with the fake boobs sewn in and shows them off for the Bellas, JoJo and Eva Marie. Nikki thinks Ariane wants fake boobs so she can become a fan favourite. Aren’t the Funkadacyls babyfaces anyway? Anyway, RAW kicks off and Ariane comes back into the locker room to discover one of her implants is gone from her gear. Trinity laughs and notes that the whole situation is funny. A producer summons the girls for the next segment. Ariane panicks. I bet that dastardly Nikki Bella stole her implant.

In the ring, the previous match ends – Dean Ambrose pins Daniel Bryan in a match that didn’t take place in Calgary, so who knows when things were taped – and Ariane shoves paper towels into her gear to pad out her chest. The Funkadactyls come out with Tons of Funk as the Bellas watch their match from a monitor backstage. John Cena wanders up to say hello, and the girls inform John that Nikki did steal Ariane’s implant. John says that wasn’t nice and wanders off for his RAW segment. In the ring, Tensai and Brodus beat 3MB and after the match, the Bellas reveal that they took the implant and everyone laughs. In the locker room, the girls discuss implants and the Bellas’ prank, and Ariane decides not to get implants after all.

Back in Tampa, we close things out with TJ actually being romantic for once, with rose petals and candles for Nattie. TJ says Nattie needs to tell him things when she’s upset, and she apologizes. Nattie suggests a beach wedding. They toast to more romance and TJ suggests she try on the lingerie again.

FINAL THOUGHTS: After four weeks, Total Divas seems to have settled into a formula. Nikki and Brie will fight over something petty, then make up. Ariane causes trouble for Trinity with her antics. John Cena and Bryan Danielson will be the voices of reason. JoJo will make faces while Eva Marie does something underhanded. At the end of the episode, everyone will laugh and things will go back to normal, more or less.

The formula works, but this episode emphasized the Bellas and the Funkadactyls, with very little Cena, Danielson, Eva Marie and JoJo, to the show’s detriment. While Nattie and TJ’s story wasn’t bad, this was the third “relationship on the rocks” story we’ve seen in the last two weeks. And for a show that was roughly half about breasts, it sure did drag on and on.

For those keeping tabs on the Reddit user who has a flawless track-record of predicting the outcomes to matches on WWE pay-per-view events, here’s the latest on him.

Apparently, the predictions posted on several websites, including this one, attributed to the Reddit user were not actually his picks. The infamous “Dolphins” did mention that he still has his source, but did not post anything on the forum-website.

He did, however, mention that he set up an official Twitter account, and would be posting his predictions on that platform. The streak continued, as he correctly predicted the outcomes to all three of the matches he posted picks for. Those matches were the Brock Lesnar vs. CM Punk match, where he correctly picked Lesnar, the Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian match, where he correctly picked Del Rio and the Bray Wyatt vs. Kane match, where he correctly picked Wyatt.
