MAILBAG: Is Rock vs. Cena The Biggest Match In History?

33

SEScoops Mailbag for March 15th

(please submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: Has any special guest referee ever called a pinfall for themselves? HBK said he knew who would win [in the Triple H vs. Undertaker HIAC match], therefore everyone will speculate [on who the] superstar is he will screw. But I was thinking maybe after HHH delivers a Tombstone to Undertaker, Michaels would swoop in and give a thunderous Sweet Chin Music and pin either or both of them, making himself [the winner and] thus ending the streak. What do you think? Is this even possible? – Shin K.

A: Not only has it happened before, but it was in a match that also involved The Undertaker! The dead man fought his brother Kane for the then-vacant WWF Title at the Judgment Day 1998 pay-per-view with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin serving as the guest referee. Undertaker knocked out Kane with a chairshot and when Austin refused to count the fall, Taker complained and ate a Stunner for his troubles. Austin then counted both men’s shoulders to the mat and declared himself the winner, even though the match was called a no contest.

Q: What do you think John Cena will do after WrestleMania? Who do u think he will feud with and when do u think he will get back into the title picture? – mGt

A: House show plans tentatively have Cena and Mark Henry working together, though that may not be until several weeks after Mania. If not, I could see them putting Cena and Miz back together, though I would strongly prefer they not do that. As for when Cena gets back in the title hunt, probably not for several months.

Q: Daniel Bryan and Sheamus had a feud last year for the US championship and were supposed to have a match at WrestleMania 27, but it was bumped from the card because of time restraints. Did WWE even mention this in their promos or anywhere, or do they just think the fans will forget everything like always? – Dave

A: I don’t recall it being mentioned on Raw or Smackdown, but maybe I missed it. I would mention it just to illustrate how far these guys have come in a year, but I wouldn’t belabor the point because, realistically, how many casual fans even realize those two guys got bumped off the card and had a dark match last year?

Q: Do you think WWE’s future in, say, the next 5-10 years is in dire trouble due to them lacking star power already, and not pushing younger talents as often as they should? – Victor

A: The same thing was said about 5-10 years ago about WWE and they’re no closer to going out of business now than they were back then. If anything, they’re stronger because they have so many additional sources of revenue that can sustain them when business is down. That said, it’s not a pretty picture even now. They haven’t created enough new stars to rival the ones that are retiring and it’s going to get worse with them having only one developmental system in Florida. They have a talented core of talent down there right now with Rollins, Ambrose, Ohno and Cesaro, but it’s not enough.

The Undertaker vs. Triple H Hell in a Cell match is currently scheduled to take place in the middle of the card. There had been some initial concern about how WWE would be able to construct the massive cage during the PPV, but WWE is planning to build a complex structure above the ring to hold the lighting setup as well as the Cell.

The WWE Championship match between CM Punk and Chris Jericho has been discussed as the show’s opening contest.

Wade Barrett Injury Update & MITB At SummerSlam?

36

Wade Barrett underwent surgery on his dislocated elbow earlier this month. The WWE website originally stated that the injury would keep him out of action for six to eight weeks, but the injury turned out to be more severe than the initial diagnosis and he’s now expected to be out for three to four months.

Barrett’s injury caused WWE to make a big change to the WrestleMania 28 card, as there were plans for Wade Barrett to win a Money in the Bank match at the show and go on to feud with CM Punk over the WWE championship. Barrett’s injury led WWE to scrap the match from the show all together.

The latest is that WWE officials are hoping that Wade Barrett will be back in action by July so they can feature him prominently at SummerSlam. There has been talk of holding a Money in the Bank match at SummerSlam, with Barrett winning that match and then going on to a feud with CM Punk for the WWE title in the fall.

12

We’ll update this story when new details become available.

Punk Openly Resentful Of The Rock, ‘Taker Dream Opponents

157

— With all the talk of there being resentment in the WWE locker room regarding The Rock’s involvement at WrestleMania, we can confirm that one person who has been outspoken about The Rock is WWE Champion CM Punk.

A source who was backstage at Survivor Series backed up another WWE source’s claim to the Pro Wrestling Torch that the tension between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena, or rather Johnson and the WWE locker room, escalated to a new level last November. Among the wrestlers’ laundry list of complaints of Johnson is that he has “gone Hollywood,” has a big ego, wants to be treated as a big star and doesn’t go out of his way to get to know all of them.

Additionally, The Rock provided WWE with a “rider” for Survivor Series – a list of items he required must be there in order for him to perform. While the contents of The Rock’ Survivor Series rider are not known, it was perhaps the biggest sign of diva behavior.

CM Punk has been among Johnson’s most vocal critics in media interviews as he feels the WrestleMania XXVII top slot should go to someone who is on the road two hundred days a year not to mention that it hurts morale when he doesn’t say hello to the wrestlers backstage. It was speculated that the WWE Champion has been angling for a match with Johnson next year, but that is not the case as he was openly resentful of his presence on the day of the Survivor Series.

— WWE.com has published a photo gallery of dream opponents they’d like to see The Undertaker face at WrestleMania. Those pictured include Sting, Andre the Giant, Randy Savage, Rey Mysterio, One Man Gang, Bret Hart, Bruiser Brody and Mr. Perfect, among several others.

New Pictures Of The Undertaker BALD

67

More pictures have surfaced of The Undertaker without his trademark long hair:

WWE Reference To Undertaker’s Hair, WWE Returning To Mexico

17

— The March 2012 issue of WWE Magazine appears to feature an inside reference concerning The Undertaker’s hair (which he no longer has because he is shaved bald). While explaining his near year long hiatus from WWE in their WrestleMania XXVIII feature, they wrote, “Despite (beating Triple H) by submission with the Hell’s Gate and extending his epic streak, The Deadman was unable to leave the arena on his own. And no one has seen hide nor hair of him for nearly an entire year.”

The Undertaker has not removed the hood covering his bald head during his appearances on Raw because WWE creative is saving the moment for his Hell in a Cell encounter with Triple H at WrestleMania XXVIII.

— WWE has announced that they will be holding Raw live events in Mexico this May. Dates and locations are as follows: May 24 at Multipurpose Centre in Hermosillo; May 25 at Monumental Bullring in Aguascalientes; May 26 at Vicente Fernandez Gomez Arena in Guadalajara.

— Former WWE star Billy Gunn wrote on Twitter regarding his one year of sobriety, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the fans and specialy my wife for hanging in there for my one year sobriety.”

Draft Update, Tyson At Axxess, Punk-Jericho, Mexico Tour

33

– The 2012 WWE Draft still does not have a formal date set. WWE has a 3-hour RAW scheduled on April 23rd, so that date has been discussed for the draft. As we reported earlier this week, WWE is promoting Mark Henry vs. John Cena for RAW-brand live events events in May, so Henry could be headed to Monday nights this spring.

– Boxing legend Mike Tyson will be appearing at WWE’s AXXESS events in Miami on March 30th. Tickets for Mike Tyson’s appearances will go on sale at the WWEShop website tomorrow (Thursday).

– In a sign that the WWE Championship feud will continue beyond WrestleMania, WWE is advertising CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho for the 4/7 RAW brand live event from Greensboro, NC.

– WWE returns to Mexico this May with a 3-show live events tour:

  • 5/24: Hermosillo (Multipurpose Centre)
  • 5/25: Aguascalientes (Monumental Bullring)

Maryse Ouellet Critical Of WWE Creative, Lilian On Mishap

13

— Former WWE talent Maryse Ouellet was critical of WWE creative’s handling of the Divas division during a recent interview with Running The Ropes. When asked how the division has changed since her debut with the company five years ago, she responded, “You know it’s changed from what it was in 2007 when it had twelve minute pay-per-view matches now to thirty second (matches). It’s hard to make a crowd relate to you when you can’t talk on the microphone, you have only a minute in the ring and you have ten divas in the ring at the same time so you can’t build a character and you can’t make people relate. It’s impossible to get over.”

She continues, “I just wish the girls were given more time to work because there is potential, but there’s no time. They need to give them something so they (WWE) can receive something and if they don’t, they will never get anything.”

The former two-time Divas Champion also discusses her release from WWE, House of Maryse, an online report that she was “too sexy” for PG WWE, her role on NXT, her famous hand gesture and more. The audio interview is available here (beginning at the 1:19:00 mark.

— SmackDown ring announcer Lilian Garcia had a wardrobe mishap at Tuesday’s SmackDown taping in Columbus, Ohio as the strap of her shoe broke while she made her ring entrance. Regarding the mishap, she wrote on Twitter, “Hilarious moment and a first! My shoe strap broke during my entrance to @WWE SD tonight so I ran down barefoot! Fixed shoe with tape!!”

Would James Compete For A Men’s Belt?, Sarita Honored In Japan

8

— Mickie James commented on her official website whether she aspires to win the X Division or World Heavyweight Championship one day. Though she would consider it an honor to compete for either title, it is not among her goals because it is not realistic.

“Although I do believe I have achieved most of my goals in the wide world of wrestling I don’t feel I’ve achieved them all. The Knockouts Tag Team Championships would be an amazing addition to my list of Championships. However, I am a realist in the sense that I live in a man’s world. Although it would be an honor to compete for either the X-Division or Heavyweight Championship I don’t have it among my goals,” James says.

“I honestly feel that a woman will probably never win the Heavyweight Championship unless it’s some sort of gimmick or fluke. I would never want to win any championship under those circumstances. Or unless of course the woman is perceived capable of competing against a man as Chyna was in her heyday. Which could possibly happen with someone like Kharma now. Or even Beth Phoenix when she first debuted. But the fact is I am a woman… I love being a woman and embrace every part of it. I’m not as strong as a man no matter how good I am.”

— Sarita, who internationally competes as Dark Angel, was honored at a ceremony on Sunday following her match for Japanese women’s wrestling promotion Stardom. She was given a plaque and a bouquet of flowers in honor of her tenth anniversary in wrestling (see photo).

– The official Facebook page of the Nationwide Arena has published photos from last night’s WWE Superstars match between Justin Gabriel and Hunico and of fans outside the venue.

Heat On Bischoff, Sorensen Update, Pierzynski’s Wrestling Future

22

– After Eric Bischoff totally buried TNA announcer Jeremy Borash on Twitter this week, just about everyone in TNA is taking Borash’s side. The general feeling is that Bischoff’s comments were beyond unprofessional and anybody else with less power than Bischoff would have been in very hot water trashing a fellow employee like that.

– Jesse Sorenson posted the following update on Twitter this week regarding his medical condition:

“After looking over my X-rays and MRI today, (the doctor) says my healing process couldn’t be going any better. Prayer and action cure fear.”

– TNA will tape two episodes of Impact next Monday and Tuesday from Orlando, FL.

– TNA returns to Biloxi, MS with a live event at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on 3/15 and Pesacola, FL at the Civic Center on 3/16.

Pierzynski stated that Chicago White Sox conditioning coach Dale Torborg (formerly the “Kiss Demon” in WCW) keeps trying to get him back into wrestling, saying,  “Demon keeps trying to suck me back in. We’ll see. We’ll see.”

Torborg added, “A.J. is better suited as a manager. He likes talking trash and then watching me get hit with a chair.”

Cody Rhodes Working Through Injuries, JR & Goldust At FCW

27

– With WrestleMania 28 just over two weeks away, Intercontinental champion Cody Rhodes is said to be working through a few nagging injuries. According to a report at f4wonline.com, Cody has been seen limping around backstage at recent live events and was noticeably in pain backstage the past two weeks.

Austin Talks Heat On The Rock, One More Match, CM Punk

52

WWE legend “Stone Cold” Steve Austin appeared on The LAW radio show this past Sunday night to promote his new movie, Recoil. You can listen to the interview at FightNetwork.com. Here are some highlights of what Austin said about:

Talent Having Problems with The Rock returning: My thoughts on that are, you earn what you get in this business. Rock has earned the ability to come and go as he wants, because the business still needs him, it can still use him, and it can elevate the profile with having such a mainstream guy there. I don’t know about the promos between John (Cena) and Rock. I think some of them have gotten kind of personal, you wonder how much of it’s a work and how much of it’s a shoot. At the end of the day, it’s a worked business. Again, I think it’s a good thing for Rock to be involved with this. He’s earned his right to come and go and do whatever he wants.

Current talent being vocal to creative: (CM) Punk was a guy, and is a guy who, man, that guy flew by the seat of his pants. He was pissed off, he vented, he cuts great promos. He worked himself out of a bad situation into a great situation. He knew when it was time to pick his spot, when he contract was gonna be up. That guy’s been around the horn a few times, and he’s been kicked around a little bit. He saw how the other guys were being treated, and he needed, and deserved, and earned the right to be treated in that same fashion. Guys, you gotta pick your spot, but you gotta be vocal. It is a very interesting machine these days. They need voices to question them. They need voices to inspire them, or fuel them, to rethink some of the things that they’re doing and make it a better product.

Returning under the right circumstances: There’s nothing up in the air for me. If there’s something that presents itself as a business opportunity, then I have an open ear to listen to it. It would have to be right for myself, my opponent, and obviously the company. I’m not lobbying for another match. There’s always talk. People ask, “am I capable of having another match?” Yeah. If I was in a bad situation, I would get back in the ring full time if I had to, but I don’t have to. I’m happy doing what I’m doing.

*SPOILERS* WWE SmackDown Tapings Results For Friday

55
WWE SmackDown on Syfy

WWE taped this week’s SmackDown show on Tuesday night from Columbus, Ohio. Credit to prowrestling.net for these spoiler results:

The show opened with the Peep Show segment involving Christian and guests John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long. Laurinaitis and David Otunga came out together to great heat. Long got a nice pop.

Christian asked Long and Laurinaitis to convince him which team he should be on. Laurinaitis said he’d give Christian a title shot if Team Laurinaitis wins, so Christian joined his team. Teddy tried to set up Christian in a match, but Johnny stopped it. Instead, they went with Kofi Kingston, now on Team Teddy, facing David Otunga, who wore his sweater vest.

McMahon Enjoying Rock-Cena Tension, Kamala Speaks Out

26

— Multiple sources have confirmed to the Pro Wrestling Torch that there is legitimate tension between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena, which reflects in their war of words. Furthermore, Vince McMahon is doing nothing to stop it as he and those in upper management love the conflict.

As in the past, McMahon enjoys seeing top stars challenge other. He feels the audience will sense real friction between two wrestlers, thus furthering interest in the match he’s trying to sell. In the case of Johnson and Cena, the top circle likes that fans are sensing their friction and believing that they may legitimately come to blows at WrestleMania XXVIII.

— WREG-TV in Memphis, Tennessee profiled “The Ugandan Giant” Kamala on his career and health issues. After having is leg amputated late last year, the legendary wrestler now uses a wheelchair and is learning to use a prosthetic leg. However, he doesn’t want his fans to feel sorry for him.

Jim Ross Sounds Off On Wrestler Resentment Toward The Rock

15

During the latest edition of Legends of Wrestling on WWE Classics On Demand, Jim Ross took the opportunity to sound off on those bearing resentment toward Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returning to WWE.

“Young guys on the roster, or the Internet guys, or anybody else that says, “Well, how does it effect the current roster that The Rock’s going to come back and have key spot and he’s not on the road everyday?” I want to say, you people have got to be kidding me. You got to be kidding me. Do you understand what The Rock has done for this business? His family has done for this business? And he’s coming back as a major movie star, to get back in the ring and be physical. You think The Rock’s going through the motions?” Ross says.

He continues, “He can’t. It’s not in his DNA. The Rock’s DNA is “I’m coming back to put boots in asses. I will not be embarrassed. I will not call it in. I will not phone it in. I will kick some ass.” The Rock has respect for this business, will have an amazing WrestleMania that we will be talking about for years to come because he is a stallion. And he loves this business.”

“I understand that I’m not well-liked, but I love going out there and proving that I’m better than everyone else every single night.”
