MAILBAG: Will Dolph Ziggler Cash In At WrestleMania?

29

SEScoops Mailbag for February 25th

Got a Question? Submit it with your name to: [email protected]

Q: Why did they wait so long to debut the new WWE championship belt? Was it because they wanted The Rock to [unveil] it or just disagreements on the look? – Kyle Gray

A: A story on WWE.com about the creation of the new belt indicated they ran into some issues with the title being too heavy and it needed more work before completion. That likely delayed things, and I also think them wanting Rock to debut the new look had something to do with it. After eight years of the Spinner, I’m surprised they couldn’t wait two more months and unveil the title in April to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the championship.

Q: If Lex Luger didn’t leave the WWF in September of 1995, do you think he would have become WWF champion eventually? Was he headed for a heel turn after Summerslam [that year]? And if he was on the card at WrestleMania 12, who would he have faced? – Jay from Ft. Lauderdale

A: If Luger was going to win the title, which had been the plan at one point, it would have already happened by then. So no, I don’t think he would have been champion. He had already been phased down to the mid-card by the time he left for WCW. His partner at the time, the British Bulldog, ended up tagging with WWF champion Diesel on an episode of Raw and turning on him, so Luger himself was not headed for a heel turn. It’s interesting they would have had Davey Boy turn on Diesel and not Luger, which doesn’t speak very highly for how they perceived Luger at the time. As for WM12, my guess is he would have gotten one of the spots in that 6-man tag that opened the show against Vader, Owen and Bulldog.

Q: What are the odds of Dolph Ziggler cashing in [his MITB contract] at WrestleMania, which would make him the first person to do so? I could even see where Vickie [Guerrero] doesn’t book him in a match and he cashes in to spite her and turn babyface. – Dustin from Flair Country

A: If the idea is to phase down Jack Swagger’s character after WrestleMania as punishment for his recent arrest, I think the odds are good. I could see Del Rio beating Swagger with Ziggler cashing in immediately after, and then have Del Rio chase Dolph for the title. However, if Swagger is to remain in the title picture, that makes it unlikely, especially with he and Dolph both being heels.

Q: If you were trying to convince a non-wrestling fan to appreciate pro-wrestling and could choose one match for them to watch, which match would you choose? – Jonathan from the U.K.

A: I’m gonna pick two. One is more “wrestling heavy” than the other, but both tell fantastic stories and are exciting in their own way. Steve Austin vs. Dude Love at “Over the Edge” 1998, with Vince McMahon as guest referee, and Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25.

Q: If top WCW stars such as Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Sting, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and a few others were part of the invasion storyline, do you think it would [have been] more successful and would have last beyond Survivor Series 2001? – Ravonn from New York

A: Absolutely, they could have kept it going at least through WrestleMania the following year, if not longer. Build to a supercard with several big matches and either have the WWF come out on top, or split the wins between them and the invaders, which would give way to running WCW as a separate brand. That had been the original plan before Booker T and Buff Bagwell wrestled in Tacoma.

Q: In your opinion, has TNA killed Mister Anderson? – Brian from Orlando

A: You can’t kill something that’s already dead.

Hulk Hogan Discusses Nixed WWE Return And Match With Cena, Reveals He Was Afraid To Call Vince With Bad News

48

Last month, Hulk Hogan sued the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa, Florida, for $50 million in damages for unnecessary surgeries that he claims prevented him from wrestling John Cena in a WWE dream match. During a newly published interview with Fighting Spirit, the wrestling legend clarifies remarks he said then linking the earnings loss with potential money-making matches in WWE, stating they were taken “out of context.” Hogan explained the details behind the match with Cena.

“It was part of a 25-year deal (with WWE)”, Hogan said. I was filming Hogan Knows Best, and Vince McMahon and I started negotiating. It was at a time when I was coming back for the one-off shows with Shawn (Michaels) and Randy (Orton).”

“But it’s wrong about Cena – that was just part of the whole thing where I would show up once in a while and wrestle. It was one of those times where Vince and I were in love one day, and fighting the next. We were negotiating a 25-year deal, and part of it was me wrestling Cena in Orlando at Wrestlemania. I called Vince and said, ‘I’m good to go’. I’d just had my first back surgery, and everything was supposed to be perfect, but just before I was due on TV, my back went. I was scared to call Vince, but when I did, I was like, ‘Dude, my back has gone out again’. After more surgeries, instead of a morphine pump to ease the pain, they inserted a battery (into my back) that was made by NASA for the space shuttle, and lasts forever.”

Gail Kim Discusses WWE vs. TNA, State Of The Knockouts Division, Would She Like To See Awesome Kong Return?

3

Gail Kim appeared on the Big WrestleShark Show with Simon Cassidy and David Thomson, where she discussed her career to date, WWE vs TNA, the current batch of Knockouts and much more. The Big WrestleShark Show airs LIVE every Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m. on Pulse 98.4 or PulseOnAir.co.uk. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

Being the first ever Knockouts Champion and what it means to her: “Oh my gosh. Every time people ask me what is the favorite moment of your career, for most people it’s really hard, but for me it’s easy. Being the first Knockout champion. Because we fought for that division, I mean when I first came in I had to wait about a year and a half before we started wrestling. When they told us they were bringing in a womens championship, we literally screamed out loud in the arena. You just never know what’s going to happen. At that time we had about five girls, and they weren’t all wrestlers. Then all of a sudden they bring in about ten girls and you never know what’s going to happen when you bring in ten people. They all got hired and it was pretty much an overnight success.”

If they can replicate the initial success of the division: “Definitely. It was magical. I always account Scott D’Amore, who was the female agent at the time for a lot of that magic. Then you had me and Awesome Kong: that was the best programme of my life, the feud of my career. Even to this day, I say those were the best those were the best years.”

The current batch of Knockouts: “Well there’s not many of us left to be honest. I heard someone say there are 10, but I’m not sure there’s even that many. The recent ones who have just departed like Rosita, Sarita… you know there’s still Velvet and Tara, but they’re all so talented. And they really highlight us, when you see us you always know it’s gonna be a great match.”

If she would like to see some old faces return: “Oh definitely, everyone always says ‘oh I would love to see Awesome Kong come back’ and I’m just like ‘aww man, I dunno if my body could take that [laughs]’. But you know there are so many talented girls out there… I would loved to have wrestled Sarita as we’re both very Mexican influenced, but maybe someday.”

How ‘the competition’ does things: “In terms of the women’s wrestling, you can clearly see we are given more time, the girls’ athletic ability is highlighted more over here. That’s what I’ve always loved, being in the ring and wrestling. So for me, personally, I prefer it here. I’ve experienced both companies, twice, and I definitely prefer my time here.

“In terms of the company as a whole, WWE has been around forever and Vince knows what he’s doing. Here, we’re a family and we’re just striving to get to that point. We have a very talented group of athletes and a great office who are very encouraging and supportive. I think eventually we will get to that point we want to get to.”

Iron Sheik Rants About Glenn Beck, Video Of Glenn Beck Ripping WWE

27

The Iron Sheik went on rant about Glenn Beck on Twitter over the weekend. As always, he’s ruthless with his comment:

“the @glennbeck you deserve to be waist deep in dog sh*t drink gasoline you insult my fans Im going to beat the f*ck out of you dumb b*tch”

“The @glennbeck win Oscar for go f*ck yourself you dumb piece of sh*t no good motherf*cker I beat the f*ck out of you put you in camel clutch”

Exclusive News On The Undertaker’s Return Over The Weekend

31

We’ve got an exclusive update regarding the Undertaker’s surprise return to the ring at Saturday night’s WWE live event from Waco, Texas.

Pictures & Video of The Undertaker’s WWE Return

The reason why Undertaker returned at a house show instead of a surprise on RAW is because he, Vince McMahon and Triple H all wanted to see how his shoulder held up during a light match before he officially committed to WrestleMania. Some people instantly assumed that his appearance guaranteed that “he’s back” and will be working WrestleMania, however the Dead Man’s WretleMania status was still up in the air prior to the match. The Undertaker has had a number of surgeries in the past year, but his shoulder is still giving him a lot of problems.

A source on the writing team told us that Taker’s return was kept very quiet and only a handful of people within WWE even knew about it. When the match was over and Taker was happy with his own performance, WWE decided to go public with the story.

Aside from the fact that that he looked a bit out of shape, fans were chanting “this is awesome” and “you still got it” during the match.

Our source tells us Undertaker will be wrestling at WrestleMania.

Daniel Bryan Tired Of His Comedy Character & Talks NXT Choking Incident, Being Trained By HBK & Regal

9

Eurosport Turkey interviewed Daniel Bryan over the weekend. Here are some (translated) highlights of what Bryan said about:

Being trained by Shawn Michaels and William Regal:

“Being trained by Shawn Michaels and William Regal was a great opportunity. Not everyone gets this opportunity. Imagine what someone like Kaval would be if he was trained by HBK& Regal”

Comparing WWE to the Indys:

“I miss the intimacy of the fans in independent scene. They have their pluses and minuses but I can say I miss the fans there.”

Disliking WWE’s Original NXT TV Concept:

“NXT was disrespectful to wrestling in general. The entire show. When Undertaker debuted, he didn’t have to climb ladders or carry kegs. I trained to be a wrestler for a long time, so let me go out and wrestle. If you have me go out and do these stupid contests, you make me look stupid and it’s very difficult to make stars when you already made them look stupid on television”

His “The Future is Bright for Bryan Danielson” Promo on NXT:

“One of the things people don’t know about NXT is that we were never told what to say, and we never knew the questions people were asking us. When the interviewer asked me “You were a big fish in a small pond and now you seemingly drowned in the sea that is the WWE”, my response was “No, this character that you created for me, he’s failed, because you created him to fail. But me, as a person, I’m better than this. I can go out and do, I can do what I’m doing right now, which is capturing the imagination of the crowd.”

The Choking Justin Roberts Incident:

“I did what I felt was natural, but I am not used to wrestle in a confined environment. WWE has to be very carful about being PG. I wasn’t used to that at the time. I was an independent wrestler, Sometimes I would do things because it just felt right, and when it felt right, it wasn’t right for the company.”

Being a World Heavyweight Champion:

“Being a world champion is cool, but you don’t just wanna be the champion, you want to be the man, you wanna be the guy they rely on for everything. Even though I was the world champion, I never was the man. John Cena, even though he isn’t the champion, he’s the man, and that’s what you aspire to be. At the end of the day, you wanna be the man”

Wanting To Do More Serious Work In WWE:

“I was able to do lots of comedy stuff on Pro Wrestling Guerilla and shows like that, it’s been fun to do that to a wider audience. But now, I’m starting to feel like aching for the more serious stuff, being able to go out there and just wrestle. “

He also said he believes Charlotte is ready to be called up to WWE’s main roster. “It’s a tough physical business. She’s built to go, and I think she’s learned her craft way beyond what I thought,” Flair said. “She’s ready to go, man.”

WWE Questions The Undertaker’s Return, Awesome Kong Harlem Shake Video

12

– Titus O’Neil says he’ll be “killing rumors” tonight on RAW, possibly in regards to online reports that his partner Darren Young will be out of action for 6+ months with a knee injury. O’Neil tweeted on Sunday:

– Texas A&M college football coach Kevin Sumlin was at Sunday night’s SmackDown live event from College Station, Texas and got involved during the action. Before the main event featuring Alberto Del Rio vs. Big Show, Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez introduced Sumlin to the crowd and presented him with a replica World Heavyweight championship belt. Sumlin wound up getting involved in the main event, sliding his new World Heavyweight title belt into the ring so Del Rio could use it on Big Show to get the win.

The Texas A&M twitter account (@AggieFootball) tweeted about Sumlin’s appearance. Ricardo Rodriguez also tweeted this picture of Sumlin with his new belt:

Dolph Ziggler Talks About His Character, What Keeps Wrestling Fans Hooked & More

6

Dolph Ziggler was recently interviewed by Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Being A Heel: I love doing this, so it’s a character but it’s also me. I really enjoy entertaining and we have people who are getting cheered and doing the right thing, but I’m not a nice guy in person so I enjoy capitalizing on that. I don’t instantly hate everyone who’s a good guy but when I back it up, it makes people that much angrier.

Why It’s Important To Be Entertaining: In this day and age, the bad guy isn’t a guy with a big beer belly who’s out of shape. Half the superstars in this roster have college degrees or master’s degrees and are really good at something, and my goal to be the best [involves entertaining]. I study entertainment and apply it to myself to one day become the greatest WWE superstar we have, and it’s a lot of work. So I write jokes and material every day … you have to keep people’s attention, one way or another.

People Saying That Wrestling Is Fake: I usually have a much snappier comeback for them: ”Oh, you’re an accountant. Is that fake?” At the end of the day, you’re doing your job, and I’m really good at what I do. Whatever you do, take pride in it and be great at it. I pride myself on blending that line, in this day and age, of reality TV mixed with stunt work and techniques to keep [the audience] entertained. With 9000 channels and YouTube and Google, you’ve got to keep their attention.

What Keeps Wrestling Fans Hooked: One way or another, whether it’s the storylines or the characters or the girls, there’s something for everyone. There are [wrestlers] that so many kids can look up to: if they’re being bullied at school, they can relate to him … they’re people who never give up. There are 50 or 60 superstars on the main roster who people can somehow relate to, and that’s why people keep coming back.

WWE.com Names WWE’s Best Actor & Best Actress

12

In honor of Sunday’s 2013 Academy Awards, WWE.com named their version of the Best Actor and Best Actress in WWE. Heyman’s now-legendary promo in which he describes the business mind and lifestyle of a “promoter” was discussed, and highlighted as the reason he won the acclaim. WWE announcer Tony Dawson said this about Heyman’s Best Actor win:

“Paul Heyman is to WWE what Marlon Brando was to Hollywood. He is the standard by which all others are measured. I will never forget his exchange with Mr. McMahon when he confessed to lying every single day to make it in this business. It was raw, powerful and absolutely brilliant.”

To read Paul Heyman’s “Acceptance Speech,” visit WWE.com.

As for Best Actress, that honor went to WWE Diva AJ Lee. “I didn’t even know I was nominated,” she told WWE.com. “Is there some sort of reward that goes along with this, like a Slammy? I already have two Slammys and I could add it to …”

Jim Ross Blogs About The Undertaker’s Return & Jack Swagger’s Situation

13

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here’s what JR had to say about:

The Latest On Jack Swagger’s DUI & Drug Arrest:

“I’m still waiting for all the info to roll in from Mississippi regarding Swagger’s arrest where he was changed with some misdemeanors. Obviously this situation was ill advised and should never have happened no matter how badly timed it is perceived by some. Any time is a bad time.”

“At some point, if one cannot solve a problem, then one must eliminate said problem. But I’ve always felt compelled that one should exhaust all reasonable remedies to solve an issue before saying adios to any talent. I’d like to think that back in the day that I was a “player’s coach” but that doesn’t mean that repeat offenders or those who are so defiant and that resist positive changes in their lives need to be kept around.”

“I simply hope that Swagger has learned a life lesson from his mistake and that nothing like this ever occurs again. He owes it to himself, his family, the fans and his company to do so.”

The Undertaker’s Return At Saturday Night’s WWE Live Event:

“Lots of buzz about the surprise return of the Undertaker Saturday night at a WWE live event in Waco Texas. Taker wasn’t advertised and competed in a tag team bout. It’s great to see the Phenom stepping back into the ring and I hope that he gives himself a passing grade for his latest experience and that he feels great today.”

“Like everyone else, I hope that Taker’s return to the squared circle results in him performing at WM29 but I would suggest that isn’t exactly a ‘done deal’ as I write this. Perhaps we will learn more next week on WWE TV or the week after. I’m willing to simply stay tuned and enjoy the ride and I remain optimistic. (What a novel concept.)”

Chris Jericho Talks About Returning To WWE, Hosting Robot Combat League On Syfy

3

Afterbuzz TV issued the following:

CHRIS JERICHO TALKS ABOUT RETURNING TO WWE AND HOW ROBOTS WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD ON MARIA MENOUNOS’ AFTERBUZZ TV

Los Angeles, CA, February 22, 2013 –(afterbuzztv.com)– WWE Superstar, Chris Jericho made an appearance on a special edition of AfterBuzz TV’s RAW aftershow Tuesday night. The wrestling legend was invited on the network to discuss his return to WWE and the new Syfy show, Robot Combat League, which Jericho hosts. In the interview, Jericho discusses his recent RAW Active match with CM Punk, why his return to wrestling is different than other Superstars, and how his now infamous jacket came to fruition.

Growing up, Jericho wanted to be two things: a pro wrestler and a rock star. Now the 42-year-old wrestler is in the middle of yet another return to the WWE and just embarked on a multi-day Australian tour with his band, Fozzy.

“This past month has been one of my best months ever,” Jericho says.

Jericho is one of the few Superstars who has not only been able to parlay his wrestling career into other aspects of the entertainment industry, but also committed enough to give 100% every time he reenters the ring.
He tells AfterBuzz, “Nothing against what Rock does or Brock or any of those guys, when I come back, I don’t just come back for Monday Night Raw. I do the house shows.”

Since Jericho’s return, he’s reignited his feud with fellow Superstars, Dolph Ziggler and CM Punk. He recounts Feb 4th’s WWE RAW Active match between himself and CM Punk, where the writers created a poll to designate which wrestler, out of Chris Jericho, Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio, would face Punk. A flash poll earlier in the week, predicted Orton to be the challenger and the writers told Jericho to not prepare with Punk—he would face Wade Barrett.

The afternoon of the fight, Jericho thought, “I knew I was going to win [the RAW active poll],” and he was right. He says the writers were shocked the fans chose him over Orton.

Jericho joked, “I went to the writers’ room and said, ‘All you guys with your flash polls, go F yourself, you can suck it.’”

Later in the interview, Y2J talks about how every time he returns to wrestling he wants to do something fresh.

“I’ve always wanted to be the Paul Stanley of wrestling…the ultimate frontman or lead singer who commands the crowd. Whenever I come back I try to do something different,” says Jericho. “I had this idea…Googled and then found this designer, Jonathan Logan. Went to visit him in the Fashion District and didn’t really know anything about him. Turns out he makes all of Brad Pitt’s stuff, all of Justin Bieber’s stuff, David Lee Roth’s stuff.”

After collaborating on a design, Logan suggested adding lights to the jacket as he had done for an Alecia Keys outfit, thus creating the iconic glowing jacket Jericho sports at shows.

As cool as the jacket is, Jericho says, it’s also a hassle. “There’s little wires and they snap all the time. I constantly have to [fix] them.” Jericho says WWE’s prop guys yell at him for having to fix the jacket so frequently.

Jericho divulges that the entire right side of his jacket broke before his intro at Wrestlemania XXVIII last year. “I had to turn and walk backwards and cheat the camera,” says Jericho, “I didn’t want anyone to see that the whole right side of my jacket had gone out…this was literally two minutes before I had to go to the ring. I was furious. I could have given a crap about the match, all I cared about was my stupid jacket.”

When asked about traveling with the jacket, Jericho mentioned an instance when he was traveling and he originally placed his jacket in his check luggage, however, the luggage was overweight. Jericho had to remove the jacket and take it as carry on, despite not having a bag to put it in.

“I had to ask [TSA] for a garbage bag. I put my big fancy jacket in a garbage bag and put it through security. One guy called me out and said ‘Jericho man, that’s your jacket? You can’t keep it in a plastic bag.’”

Another recent change in appearance are Jericho’s new tattoos. He says, “I just thought it would be cool to get a tattoo, something that means something to me. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and now was the time to do it.”

On Jericho’s new show, Syfy’s Robot Combat League, Jericho enthuses, “It’s Real Steel with actual Robots.” He says it’s nothing like Mick Foley’s robot show, Robot Wars.

“The first thing that I thought when I was in the arena and they brought the robot out, if it hadn’t stopped walking I would have turned around and ran away. It was that intimidating,” Jericho says, “We’ve now created robots that can kill humans, and in 10-years when they take over the planet, you’ll know you saw it first on Robot Combat League.”

In a strange “Where Are They Now” sighting, former WWE superstar Virgil is currently selling his wrestling memorabilia in New York City subway stations. A fan at the Markedout.com message board posted the following on Friday:

I was in such shock I doubled back, just so I could get this video for you guys.”

“[W]hen I made the pass the first time I saw him talking to somebody holding their wallet and then the person began laughing and walked away.”

Here’s the video he posted:

Another fan saw Virgil earlier in Grand Central Station and said he was able to buy a photo of Virgil for $5 (he haggled him down from $5). Twitter user @Stadiuminsider tweeted this photo of Virgil in the subway station:
