SmackDown Does A Strong Rating, War Games At Elimination Chamber?

22

– Friday’s 2/8 edition of WWE SmackDown scored a big 2.16 rating with 3.19 million viewers, up approximately 7% from the week before. This was the best overall viewership for a first-run Friday night Smackdown in a full year (2/10/12). SmackDown ranked #3 on cable for the night.

Meanwhile, The Rock’s 2007, “Game Plan,” which went head-to-head with SmackDown on the Disney Channel, drew 4.22 million viewers.

– Following Ryback’s Monday afternoon tweet that The Shield will be serviced justice this Sunday “inside the chamber,” PWInsider.com reports that the match will in fact take place inside the Elimination Chamber. This would be the first time a six-man tag match has taken place inside the Chamber.

The report suggests the match will be held under traditional “War Games” rules, where the match starts with two competitors in the ring and at each interval, a new superstar (from either team) enters the match. This typically results in one of the teams having more men in the ring, which adds to the chaos of the match.

Kurt Angle Responds To CM Punk Calling The Pope A Nazi, Del Rio & Henry Hype Elimination Chamber

Ryback Teases Second Elimination Chamber Match This Sunday & More

7

– Daniel Bryan tweeted the following on Monday about WrestleMania 29:

– The Rock tweeted the following about what keeps him going during his unbelievably busy schedule:

– Ryback tweeted the following about his 6-man tag match at Elimination Chamber this Sunday:

https://twitter.com/Ryback22/status/301056234319134720

Ryback teams up with John Cena & Sheamus against The Shield. Ryback’s comment about being justice being delivered “in the chamber” implies the 6-man tag will be an Elimination Chamber match, a stipulation that we will probably see announced tonight on RAW.

CM Punk Calls The Pope A Nazi On Twitter

104

Not one to back down from making controversial tweets, WWE Superstar CM Punk is at it again. In response to the news that Catholic Pope Benedict XVI is stepping down due to health issues related to his advanced age (85), Punk re-tweeted a message from a fan who wrote, “The pope resigned? I did nazi that coming.” and called the joke “Magic.”

Another fan replied Punk’s tweet, writing, “Ouch. That’s an envelope-pushing tweet for a company employee…” Punk fired back:

https://twitter.com/cmpunk/status/301061459440463872

Punk has since replied to another fan, telling him to “unfollow” him if he takes issue with what he has to say.

Pope Benedict has been criticized for his involvement in the “Hitler Youth” program in Nazi Germany during the late 1930’s. The Pope has defended his participation in the group, saying that all all children growing up in Germany at the time had no choice but to swear their allegiance to the fascist leader.

The historical facts are what they are … but one has to question one of WWE’s top superstars explicitly stating the “Pope was a Nazi” on Twitter ..

Heat On The Miz For CM Punk’s Injury Scare? RAW DVR Issue for Tonight

28

– Several readers have sent in word that their cable providers’ TV guides are listing tonight’s RAW as 3 separate shows (each hour being displayed individually, instead of one 3-hour block). This will cause issues with fans attempting to DVR tonight’s show. So far, we’ve heard Comcast, RCN and Charter are experiencing the issue.

** If you DVR RAW, double check that you have the whole show set to record!

– According to WWE sources, CM Punk was definitely banged up at Saturday night’s WWE live event from Springfield, Missouri when The Miz botched a suplex and nearly dropped Punk directly on his head. It’s not believed that Punk suffered a concussion, but it was a nasty bump that could have aggravated some other issues Punk has been dealing with. He’s expected to work tonight’s RAW and for those wondering, there does not appear to be any heat on The Miz following the incident.

G4 Network Re-Branded & How It Affects WWE, OVW Stars Who Changed WWE

5

WWE.com has launched a photo gallery of “The Kids from OVW that Changed WWE.” Ohio Valley Wrestling, once the developmental territory of WWE, produced some of the industry’s top performers, including John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton & Batista. OVW is now the developmental system for TNA.

WWE.com has also published a top 10 list of the most dateable Superstars & Divas.

– NBC Universal announced on Monday that they are partnering with Esquire Magazine to re-brand their G4 cable network. The new “Esquire Channel” will launch soon as “an upscale Bravo for men.” The news is relevant to the wrestling world because as recently as last summer, WWE was interested in purchasing G4 in hopes of re-branding it as the WWE Network. One of WWE’s biggest hurdles in launching the WWE Network has been getting clearances from cable companies – and acquiring G4 would have helped with that.

As noted over the weekend, satellite provider DirecTV is surveying their subscribers regarding the launch of a new premium, subscription-based WWE Network that would run original programming, classic footage and all live WWE pay-per-views except for WrestleMania.

At one point, the UFC was also interested in buying G4 to launch their own network.

Chicago TNA Impact Tickets Selling Well, Latest TNA Reaction Video

10

– With TNA Wrestling gearing up for next month’s March 14h episode of Impact Wrestling from Hoffman Estates, Illinois (just outside of Chicago), ticket sales for the show are going strong. The seats that were going for $73, $43 and $23 are all sold out.

There are still tickets available for $13, as well as VIP Suite seating ($125), which includes a pre-show meet and greet with TNA wrestlers. It’s possible more seats will go on sale as it gets closer to the event, but this is a good sign for TNA.

Impactwrestling.com has announced that TNA is teaming up with Machinima Sports to feature the newly re-launched “TNA Reaction” show as part of the MachinimaSports YouTube channel. The first episode, which you can view below, looks at TNA’s recent UK tour:

Roddy Piper Talks About His Son Joining WWE, Who Would Play Him In A Movie About His Life & More

8

WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper was recently interviewed by fan questions on WrestleNewz.com. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His Son Colt Wrestling & If He’ll Ever Join WWE:

“There’s always the question whether a wrestler has “it.” What “it” is — that’s never defined, because there’s not a better word for it. Call it chemistry, call it charisma: there are different ways to describe it. But whatever “it” is, Colt has it. He’s a natural. Now comes the question of what Colt decides to do with it. I’m trying to mostly stay away from it. His name is Colt Toombs. He is undefeated as an MMA fighter as an amateur, and he always fights under his real name, Toombs. He’s making his own headway, on his own terms, with his own name. And I’m extremely proud of him. He is wrestling in a league called Portland Wrestling Uncut, and various groups. He was supposed to wrestle Daivari in Santiago, Chile, but unfortunately the show got canceled because they couldn’t provide the proper security. He’s doing great, though. I don’t want to give away any of his future plans. But you won’t miss him! He’ll be coming at you, oh yeah.”

WWE Stars With The Most Potential & Who He’d Want To Wrestle:

“Of the current generation? Oh my goodness, they’re all fantastic. Randy Orton, CM Punk, Jericho — I don’t want to leave anybody out. Cody Rhodes is great. So many guys nowadays are fantastic, so I can’t pick just one! But who would I want to have a match with? (Long pause) Brock Lesnar.”

Who Will Play Him In The Movie About His Life?

“Mark Wahlberg. He’s already been approached. I’m telling you, they have a script already. You know, my head’s just not there right now. But there are definitely two scripts that I know of. One is by Sal (Iacono), the head writer for the Jimmy Kimmel show. And there’s another one that I know of, and Mark Wahlberg is the man they were talking about for that. And I think that he’d be a good pick.”

More On Bruno Sammartino Movie In The Works, New SmackDown Theme

5

– Friday’s SmackDown saw the debut of a new theme song for the show, which is “Born 2 Run” by the band 7Lions.

– With Bruno Sammartino back in the fold with WWE, talks have intensified between WWE Studios’ Muchael Luisi and movie producers for theplanned Bruno Sammartino feature film.

While no deal has been finalized, a script, written by Scott Rosenfelt and Paul Guay, has already been completed that spans Bruno’s life from 1943 when the Nazis took over Pizaferato, Italy through 1995.

Another CM Punk Injury Update, Ziggler & AJ Doing Media In Nashville

25

– As noted earlier, CM Punk suffered an injury scare in a spot with The Miz at Saturday’s live event. While Punk insists he’s fine and did wrestle the following night, there is concern within WWE that the situation could be worse than he’s letting on and he could be hiding an injury because he doesn’t want to miss any time during WrestleMania season.

– Dolph Ziggler and AJ Lee are doing media today in Nashville to promote RAW. Ziggler tweeted on Monday morning:

– Rosa Mendes, Primo and Epico will be appearing at the Metro PCS store in Kalamazoo, Michigan on March 2nd at 3pm.

The Undertaker has been off WWE television since the RAW 1,000 special back in July and is rumored to be wrestling CM Punk at WrestleMania 29. There have been conflicting reports as to whether the Dead Man will be able to compete due to his health.

While backstage at the game, Undertaker snapped a picture with the Predators mascot as well as two ladies:

RAW Preview (Nashville, TN): Rock, Jericho, Henry & More

7

Tonight’s episode of WWE RAW takes place from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

WWE Champion The Rock will be at RAW to confront his Elimination Chamber opponent at Sunday’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, former champion CM Punk.

Brock Lesnar had been advertised for the show, but was removed from the “superstars scheduled to appear” list in the past week. WWE is still teasing whether anybody can control Lesnar, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be there in person.

After a hard fought loss to CM Punk last week, Chris Jericho will be in the house tonight.

No matches have been announced for the show as of Monday morning.

WWE is focusing on the following points for tonight:

* A final confrontation between The Rock & CM Punk

* Can anyone control Brock Lesnar?

* Mark Henry is back on the scene and ready to dish out pain.

* Which returning Superstar is poised for a big 2013?

* John Cena, Sheamus and Ryback’s struggle with The Shield continues.

The advertised dark match main event will see John Cena and Ryback teaming up against CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler.

– With Rey Mysterio still out of action, Sin Cara continues to team with the Great Khali at SmackDown live events.

– NXT star Conor O’Brian wrestled at last night’s live event in Louisville, losing to Brodus Clay.

– Speaking of NXT stars working WWE live events, NXT’s Corey Graves wrestled at all 3 of this weekend’s RAW live events from Missouri (Poplar Bluff, Springfield & Cape Girardeau). WWE ring announcer Justin Roberts tweeted that he was impressed by Graves’ work over the weekend.

Graves tweeted this picture on Sunday of himself on the way to the ring with the hashtags #FilthParade & #StayDown:

Pictures Of The Miz Dumping CM Punk On His Head

87

As noted earlier, CM Punk had an injury scare at Saturday night’s WWE RAW live event from Springfield, Missouri after The Miz botched a stalled suplex and nearly dropped Punk directly on his head. Punk rolled out of the ring where he was checked out by WWE officials for several minutes before finishing the match.

According to a live correspondent who was at Sunday night’s WWE RAW live event from Cape Girardeau, CM Punk wrestled in the tag team main event, showed no signs of injury and even took hard bumps during the match. Thankfully, this looks like Saturday night’s incident was simply a close call for Punk and nothing more.

Here are pictures of the spot that could have gone terribly wrong:

Jim Ross Blogs About Curt Hennig On The 10 Year Anniversary Of His Passing

2

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com with his thoughts on the late WWE Hall of Famer Curt Hennig on the 10 year anniversary of his passing. Here’s what JR said about Hennig:

“Can’t help but think about Curt Henning aka Mr. Perfect today on the anniversary of his untimely passing. “Perfecto’ was as good a natural athlete as I’ve ever been around in the wrestling biz. Curt starting so young and wrestling so much likely contributed to his lingering back injuries as back ailments are horrific for any performer in the sports entertainment biz. Curt was also one of the funniest guys that I ever worked with on commentary and had legit, natural timing much like a guy he watched while growing up, Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan.”

“Curt truly loved life and some could argue that he loved it a little too much at times. Nonetheless I value the relationship that we had and the fun doing WWE voice overs at the Stamford, Ct studios back in the day. Chief Jay Strongbow nicknamed Curt “Dennis the Menace” because of his mischievous demeanor at times.”

“Curt was one of my favorite wrestlers and when he was healthy he could hang with anyone. I am optimistic that his son Joe also know as Michael McGillicutty will be a main event level talent before all is said and done. I’ve seen Joe wrestle a great deal especially down in NXT and he has every thing he needs to be special. It’s all about timing and right place at the right time but I’m confident that Joe will persevere and get to the next level and it could happen in 2013. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t.”

JR also wrote about Bruno Sammartino’s WWE Hall of Fame induction, Mark Henry’s return to WWE television and WWE signing indie talent.

Remembering Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig On The 10th Anniversary Of His Passing

12

WWE Hall of Famer Curt Hennig, best known to many as Mr. Perfect, passed away on this date 10 years ago. A decade later, Hennig is still remembered as one of the most beloved performers of his generation, with his freakish athleticism and rarely-matched technical ability. We’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the the life of Curt Hennig and express gratitude for the many great moments he creative. We also encourage you to comment below and share your favorite memories from his illustrious career.

From his time in the AWA, to the iconic “Mr. Perfect” sports vignettes,  his unforgettable run with the WWF Intercontinental championship, his chemistry with Bobby Heenan and Ric Flair, his “Rap is Crap” antics with WCW’s West Texas Rednecks and his final WWE run that began with a surprise entry in the 2002 Royal Rumble, there was only one Mr. Perfect.

RIP Curt Hennig.

Hennig’s son Joe (WWE superstar Michael McGuillicutty) tweeted the following this afternoon regarding his father:

Tara Talks About Impact Going On The Road, Trish Stratus’ WWE HOF Induction & More

5

TNA Knockout Tara recently spoke to Kevin Kellam of Examiner.com. Here are some highlights of what she said about:

The feeling in TNA with IMPACT going on the road: “Our fans get spoiled and callused. They want to see us draw blood. In Orlando, thank god we are going on the road, our fans in Orlando got a little bit spoiled because they see us every week, but we were out there killing ourselves for entertainment. We are actresses and actors who do our stunts with drama. And when they don’t react to certain things, it’s like my God, what do you want me to do?!”

If it was becoming an issue in Orlando: “Not for like my bosses. It’s just that we feed off the fans, we feed off their reactions. It becomes stale (without those reactions). And now we get to see fresh faces and that’s why it’s nice to go overseas too. I am just excited about going on the road, you have no idea. We don’t want ‘hush hush’ fans. It’s nice to hear everything, I have a problem where I can hear everything in the first couple rows. And if I hear someone cheering for my opponent. I am going to go out there and freaking tell them like it is. I am very fan-interactive. That’s a big part of TNA.”

Trish Stratus being inducted in the WWE Hall of Fame and if she will attend: “Oh she so deserves it! I am going to be honest with you, I wish I could induct her. I was in WWE. I am proud to be a part of WWE history, and now I am with TNA, there is no rivalry between companies for me. I love both companies but I am super proud of her, she deserves it for ‘the Golden era’. She also reached out and called me and said thank you, you helped me be inducted because we had hellacious matches. That’s a true professional, she appreciates who got her there. I would love to be there, but I don’t know how both companies would feel. Honestly, I am super proud. I love her, we are best friends.”

Team Rhodes Scholars Reunites (Picture), Trish’s HOF Induction Criticized, Upsets Countdown

https://twitter.com/CodyRhodesWWE/status/300038591151755265

– Independent women’s wrestler “Pryme Tyme” Amy Lee recently did an interview with Kayfabe Wrestling Radio where she criticized WWE for inducting Trish Status into their Hall of Fame before the late Luncha Vachon:

“[Luna] was trained by Moolah, who was someone who’s in your Hall of Fame and you don’t put f–king Luna Vachon in there? God forbid you have her uncle accept on her behalf or her sons to acknowledge her credibility; Oh wait, that’s right, back in 2000 you told her she was a great wrestler but she wasn’t pretty enough for TV, so you fired her. Oh yeah, I forgot that, she wasn’t pretty enough.”

CM Punk Injury Scare At WWE Live Event

53

WWE Superstar CM Punk had an injury scare at Saturday night’s WWE RAW live event from Springfield, Missouri.

Punk wrestled in the tag match main event, teaming up with Antonio Cesaro against The Miz and Ryback. During the match, there was a spot where The Miz delivered a stalling suplex on Punk. Somehow The Miz lost his balance and dropped Punk almost directly on his head. The crowd instantly knew the move did not go as planned, as Punk rolled out of the ring. WWE officials ran over to Punk and checked him out for several minutes.

The match continued and Punk did return to action, but was visibly shaken up and was wrestling at a much slower pace than usual.

Bruno Sammartino Interview: His Relationship With Vince McMahon, Returning To MSG, Who Will Induct Him & More

20

WWE Hall of Famer Bruno Sammartino was a recent guest on the latest edition of Busted Open Radio hosted by Doug Mortman and Dave LaGreca. Busted Open Radio airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2-4p.m. Eastern on Sirius 94 and XM 208. Highlights of the interview are below:

Bruno on why he changed his mind and decided to enter the WWE Hall of Fame: “I said I would refuse, I would not go in because I would be a hypocrite, because I had been very critical of some of the things that were going on. I felt that there was a big drug problem with the steroids and probably other things. I also didn’t like the nudity and the vulgarity and the profanity that was going on in the organization. For that reason I said I would be hypocritical for going in because I had been critical of all these things. Therefore, how can I go into that Hall of Fame. A lot of people supported me and some did not. But I had to go in what I believed in. So I stuck by my guns for a lot of years. But let me tell you what changed my mind. Paul Levesque (Triple H). I don’t know if I can say he runs the organization , but he is certainly a heavyweight in that organization. He has been involved in a lot of decision making and so forth. He contacted me probably five or six months ago. I didn’t know too much except that he was one of the superstars known as Triple H. I didn’t know Paul too well. When he called and introduced himself, we started a conversation and he wanted to open the door, so to speak for us to talk about the Hall of Fame. He told me how much he would like for me to be in there. That’s how it all started. What did it for me is that Paul comes across, and I believe he is from what everyone has told me is that he is a very sincere guy. He comes across sincere, very honest, very straightforward. He started telling me all the changes they made, for example, when he mentioned that Dr. Joseph Maroon who had the drug testing with the WWE, that was big because I know Dr. Maroon. Dr. Maroon is a world renowned neurosurgeon. He operated on me three times on my back. I couldn’t function anymore because I did so much damage to my back. But because of him here I am today. I know what kind of dedicated man he is. When he took on this challenge with the WWE and the drug testing, I knew they were sincere about fixing this problem. I have to take my hat off to them because they did take the proper steps where some other organizations did not. Paul then started talking about the changes in making it more family-friendly. He knew and understood some of the things I objected to. He told me all these things have changed, like the nudity and vulgarity. So I started watching it again. I haven’t watched wrestling in many, many years. I was totally turned off on it. So I started watching it again and what Paul told me, he absolutely made me a believer. Let’s talk about the talent itself. I see a world of difference. I don’t see steroid users. These guys look athletic but certainly I don’t see the likes of what we saw ten, fifteen years ago or even later. But I saw there was no nudity, I saw no vulgarity. All these long interviews and no profanity. Paul told me everything that they changed. He also told me the direction that he wanted to go in. It was all positive for me. I had said years ago, yes I would be a hypocrite if I went in when I was being so critical. In different interviews, I have also said that if they changed I would reconsider my feelings towards the Hall of Fame. The only problem was I never thought I would see it happen.”

Bruno on how persistent Triple H was to get him to agree: “Well it didn’t happen overnight. We kept talking and this went on for months and months. Finally after so much time elapsed and everything we discussed , I finally became convinced that Paul absolutely wanted to take the business into a different direction. He was trained by Killer Kowalski. He was a student of the old days. He was a student of my era. He loved that and thought a lot of that. So he wants to make changes that goes back to that era. Everything he said, he convinced me because most of all I believed him. I absolutely believe his sincerity. The changes are there. Now I see these guys and the current guys are not on that stuff. Paul convinced me this is the way it is and is what they want going forward. So I said yes I’m interested and if I could help in any way as long as they keep going in that direction. I would make myself open to it.”

Bruno on his relationship with Vince McMahon: “Here is how I feel. As I criticized Vince as you guys are fully aware of. But I also know that these changes came about because Vince was a part of it. I’m sure Vince is the big boss. I’m sure Paul and Vince had many serious conversations and obviously Vince had to agree to everything. My feeling is yes I criticized, but I will also praise him because he took all the steps. I will criticize you if you deserve to be criticized, but I will praise you when that’s proper. He has made all these changes and I praise him for that. I have not talked to Vince. I have not seen him. But when the time comes, probably when I get there, I’m sure a meeting will be held. I will be glad to meet with him and have conversations with him.”

On reports that he doesn’t have to deal with Vince McMahon: “That’s a lie! I have heard so many different things that goes on in this internet and I don’t understand where it all comes from. Where do people get this information? People have told me so many things that they saw on the internet. That is nonsense. I absolutely have never suggested that the conditions be that I would not have anything to do with Vince or see him or anything like that. Absolute lies. I resent people writing these things when they have no idea what the heck they are talking about because there is no truth to it at all.”

On the emotions he will feel at Madison Square Garden: “I’m wondering myself. There is no question, that its going to be something for me and I hope I can handle it emotionally because I appeared in that building over 200 times. 50 years ago I took the belt from Buddy Rogers. That’s the place I picked up Haystacks Calhoun, when no one was able to budge him. It’s a place where I also broke my neck. It’s the place where I lost the title. It’s a place where I regained the title. To be there as many times as I did, and the thing that I never forgotten and it still touches me and gives me goosebumps is that when I used to make my entrance from my dressing room towards the ring, that whole audience would explode and start chanting my name. Even though I was a fanatic about my training, but when I got in that ring I was even more energized. I wanted to give everything I had to give, to those fans because they treated me so great. You know in this business you’re a headliner if given the opportunity. But if those fans don’t come out for you, you’re not a headliner for long. I was a headliner for twenty something years because the fans came out and supported me. For the fans who wanted me to do this, I wanted to please them as well. Yes I have thought about what its going to be like when I appear there one more time because I never thought I would step into Madison Square Garden again. I’m sure everything is going to be flashing back to all the stuff that happened there. I hope I’m man enough to handle it without getting too emotional.”

On the reaction from the fans when he was announced as a Hall of Fame member on RAW: “That was a big shock to me, because when I heard that they were going to make the announcement in Atlanta, I’ll be very honest with you guys, I didn’t know what to expect. But I certainly didn’t expect any kind of big reaction. I thought it might get a polite yay or okay. (Laughs). So when I was watching it and I saw the piece that was put together, and I saw the reaction of the people, I couldn’t believe it to be honest with you. I was in shock. I thought, my gosh this isn’t Madison Square Garden, this is Atlanta. I wrestled in Atlanta, but not like the Garden or some of the other arenas around here. To see that reaction from fans who probably weren’t around when I was wrestling. That just blew me away.”

On who he wants his inductor to be: “Paul said to me that they usually let the persons being inducted choose who they want. However he asked me if I would allow them to think about it for a while. They want to bring someone who they think would be fitting for the occasion. Someone who is worldly known. I don’t know who they have in mind. But if it were me, there would be a number of people I would suggest. My good buddy, Dominic Denucci. Guys like Ivan Koloff who took the title from me and who I had some of the greatest matches with. There is Bill Watts who I have a history with. Look at the history I had with Larry Zbyszko. I always wanted to go out on top, that was my dream. The last thing I did in this business was with Zbyszko. Look what we did at Shea Stadium. We sold out Shea Stadium and turned them away from every arena that we went into. What a way to go out. He would be pretty darn good at that as well. I’ll leave it up to them because they have their own idea.”

On whether he considers the WWE Hall of Fame can now be called legitimate: “Now I do! (Laughs) The other thing I asked and they are planning on doing it down the road is a building. A building that people can visit. It’s down the road like I said but it’s in the works.”
