Bruno Sammartino Entering The WWE Hall Of Fame

45

Hell has frozen over. ESPN.com broke the story and now WWE.com has confirmed it – Bruno Sammartino has agreed to join the WWE Hall of Fame’s Class of 2013. The following is WWE’s official announcement on the matter, including quotes from Triple H and Bruno Sammartino:

At long last, Bruno Sammartino will come home to Madison Square Garden on the night before WrestleMania 29 to take his rightful place as a WWE Hall of Famer. (

The longest-reigning WWE Champion of all time was announced Monday as the fourth inductee for the Hall’s star-studded 2013 class. Sammartino will join fellow former WWE Champions Mick Foley and Bob Backlund and former Women’s Champion Trish Stratus in sports-entertainment’s most hallowed hall on April 6, 2013. But for all the greats who have been and will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, only Bruno lays claim to being the one true “Living Legend.”

Sammartino’s induction has long been anticipated by a generation of WWE fans who grew up idolizing the Italian strongman. In an exclusive interview, Bruno revealed to WWE.com why he felt 2013 was the right time to finally enter the WWE Hall of Fame.

“Triple H contacted me and started telling me all the things that had changed and everything that was going on with WWE,” Bruno said. “I started watching it after talking to him and when I saw it, I was very, very impressed.”

For Triple H, the hall was incomplete without The Living Legend.

“I love the history of this business,” Triple H said. “Without the history, there is no tomorrow. To look back on the history of WWE, one of the most important figures in the long story of where this all came from wasn’t recognized. And that was Bruno.”

Born in a small mountain town in Italy, Sammartino immigrated to Pittsburgh at age 15. After breaking world weightlifting records as a teenager, Sammartino was noticed by Vincent J. McMahon, who encouraged the impressive athlete to pursue a career in professional wrestling. He became an overnight sensation and on May 17, 1963, defeated “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers in the old Madison Square Garden to become the second WWE Champion in history. Sammartino held the title for nearly eight years, by far the longest reign of all time — not just in WWE, but with regards to any sports-entertainment organization.

Bruno Sammartino became a household name throughout the 1960s and ’70s by turning back rivals including Killer Kowalski, Gorilla Monsoon and George “The Animal” Steele. In early 1968, he headlined the first-ever wrestling event at the new and current Madison Square Garden. In all, Bruno sold out the building on an astounding 187 occasions and is partially responsible for it becoming The World’s Most Famous Arena. It was there on Dec. 10, 1973, that Sammartino became the first-ever two-time WWE Champion and he held the title for an additional three-and-a-half years. On Aug. 9, 1980, Bruno main-evented an epic event in front of more than 35,000 people at New York City’s Shea Stadium that broke box-office records.

“Arguably the biggest name ever in the history of the business is Bruno Sammartino,” Triple H said.

For many longtime fans, the WWE Hall of Fame was simply not complete until the beloved Bruno Sammartino was inducted. Now it will happen at the building where he achieved his finest moments. Tickets for the Induction Ceremony are on sale now and available at the MSG box office, online at Ticketmaster.com and various Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. Ticket prices range from $50 to $150.

Mick Foley On Whether He’d Wrestle Again & Why His Feud With Dean Ambrose Ended

27

Future WWE Hall of Fame inductee Mick Foley held a comedy show in Adelaide, Australia over the weekend and spoke to the audience about a few wrestling-related items, including whether we’ll ever see him in the ring again and why his off-air feud with Dean Ambrose ended somewhat abruptly.

After feuding with Dean Ambrose on Twitter last year (and having a face-to-face confrontation with him during WrestleMania 28 weekend), Foley there were plans for them to wrestle at SummerSlam. Foley said he pitched the idea for him to wrestle Ambrose as Mankind, with a fake “Dude Love” coming out and attacking Ambrose during his entrance while Mankind would come through the ring, a gimmick he cleared with the Undertaker.

The plans had to be dropped after he got a diagnosis from his neurologist saying he should not be in the ring.

During their social media war last year, Foley said he felt Ambrose went too far by making personal remarks about his family. When Foley told him to lay off his family, Dean kept bringing up his wife and kids, thinking that Foley’s request to stop was part of Foley “working” the angle.

MAILBAG: Do You Consider Rock To Be A Paper Champion?

33

SEScoops Mailbag for February 4th

Got a Question? Submit it with your name to: [email protected]

Q: With Rock’s current contract limitations, and the fact they’re just using him for another big payday at WrestleMania after which he will be gone promoting movies, could he be considered a paper champion? – Ernesto

A: If your definition of a paper champion is more of a transitional champion, then yes. Rock is only expected to be champion for a limited period of time and get the title back onto John Cena. However, if by paper champion you mean someone who is not deserving of the title or someone who lacks respect, then I disagree. Of course, it’s silly to even use such a phrase in pro wrestling because no one ever really “wins” a title.

Q: I was watching Armageddon 2005 and was wondering what the deal was with the Tim White suicide storyline? – Tom B.

A: Just some dumb fun to amuse the writers, or Vince himself I would imagine. Tim White was forced to retire from officiating because of a chronic shoulder injury and they just wanted to give him something to do. Was it in poor taste? You bet. Suicide isn’t something to make light of (especially in the wrestling business). But for what it was, I actually thought he and Josh Mathews were pretty funny in those skits.

Q: If you can, go back and watch the Royal Rumble match between The Rock and CM Punk around the end. I notice at times you can catch the wrestlers calling out spots and it looks to me like MAYBE CM Punk was supposed to kick out [after the People’s Elbow]. Of course, it’s hard to tell exactly what is being said, but what do you think? Do you think CM Punk was supposed to kick out, but decided not to? – Avery T.

A: I’ve heard nothing to suggest the finish was anything other than what they had planned. If you watch some of Rock’s matches, he has a tendency to say something to his opponent before he covers them for the finish. I can’t make out what it is, but I’ve seen him do it before. CM Punk did not change the finish on the fly. Perhaps he should have though because using a Rockbottom would have been more effective in ending a 434 day title reign than a simple People’s Elbow.

Q: How do you think CM Punk is really feeling about the possibly of missing out on the WrestleMania main event again? The man was champion for well over a year and once again, it’s looking like “Dwayne” and Cena will headline the event. To me, it’s an odd equation because you could argue that Punk wouldn’t have been champion for nearly as long as he did without the Rock match set in stone for the Rumble. I really think the only thing that would match the Cena/Rock main event would be a Punk/Austin match, which won’t happen. But, if I was Punk, I’d feel like I’d taken a nice girl out for a date, got her back to her place, gone upstairs, gotten in her bed, [only for her to turn around and tell me to] go f*ck myself. – Jake from the U.K.

A: If you’ve watched his DVD, I’m sure he’s not thrilled about it. At the same time, he’ll still be featured in a prominent role and will make a ton of money. Hard to feel too badly for anyone like that. Who knows, if Undertaker bows out of the show this year, Punk may yet end up in the main event after all.

Q: CM Punk commented on the January 7th Raw that Daniel Bryan had been reduced from being a dangerous man to a guy that needs a catchphrase to get over. From a mega-mark’s point of view, that’s true. But it’s also not the worst thing in the world. Take a look at Kurt Angle. Angle was a goofball the first 2 1/2 years of his WWE career. Then Vince McMahon wanted him to go bald and be more serious; and while Angle still had goofball moments and the “You suck” chants, he was a no nonsense “Wrestling Machine” until he left for TNA in 2006. That could still happen for Daniel Bryan down the line. The bottom line is that after Bryan won the U.S. title, he became boring and vanilla. If he didn’t run with the popularity of “Yes!” after WrestleMania, he’d be nowhere. He’s got to be a goofball now for his long-term survival. – Cliff

A: You’re right, it’s not the worst thing in a world. He has a role on the show and is over with the audience. But I disagree that he *has* to be a goofball now to ensure his long-term survival. If he dropped his shtick tomorrow, shaved the beard and went all serious, he would be just fine. The man is talented enough to make either role work. The comedy stuff is fine for now, but at some point, it gets old.

Q: Do you remember back in the 90’s when Tammy Sytch gave Elmo a “Sunny day” in that skit on Shotgun? I can’t remember if they showed it here across the Atlantic or not and it was only brought to my attention during an interview I listened to on YouTube. She swapped a Tickle-Me Elmo for a Fondle-Me Elmo! – Andrel from Northampton, England

A: Thank you for the lovely visual.

Sting Talks About Staying With TNA Year After Year, Impact On The Road & More

13

TNA star Sting was a guest on the WrestleShark radio this past week and spoke about why he’s stayed with the company year after year, his loyalty to Dixie Carter and more. Here are some highlights of what The Icon said about:

Being Loyal To TNA: “The group of men and women under the TNA roof, the fans, the brand, I just feel content here. The home has been good here; Dixie Carter, the Carter family have been great to work with over the years and Dixie is very persuasive.”

Staying With TNA Year After Year: “Dixie was very persuasive, being willing to make it right in terms of scheduling, the time on the road, of course money is an issue, it just all came together. And I love the brand…that’s all there is to it. It was like a now or never moment for me.”

Impact Going On The Road:: “I think if we go out on the road there is a lot of potential for that to happen.”

His TNA Hall of Fame Induction: “Very humbling…because there are so many other guys, the Samoa Joes, the A.J. Styles, Bobby Roode, James Storm, Jeff Jarrett, who were here before I was. They helped build a foundation for this company,” Sting said. “I was kind of like ‘am I being put out to pasture here or what?’ [laughs] plus I’m an active wrestler. So it seems kind of weird to be inducted into the Hall of Fame while you’re still working.”

RAW Preview: Paul Heyman On Miz TV, Brock Lesnar, Chris Jericho & More

As for Lesnar, he’ll be at RAW to address his WWE return. WWE.com is asking, “Why did Lesnar resurface in WWE? Is he here to stay? Who is next in his sights?”

Chris Jericho is also advertised to appear. With Jericho is signed with WWE through WrestleMania 29, we should see the seeds planted for his WrestleMania feud soon.

WWE Champion The Rock has the week off, so CM Punk will have the responsibility of keeping the hype going for their upcoming WWE title match at Elimination Chamber in less than two weeks.

Plus – after getting attacked by The Shield last week, how will Royal Rumble winner John Cena respond?

The advertised dark match main event is John Cena & Ryback vs. CM Punk & Ziggler.

Exclusive: Undertaker Less Than 50% For WrestleMania 29

65

In a major development, we have learned EXCLUSIVELY that the WWE writing team has been told Undertaker is “less than 50 percent for WrestleMania,” and that before the writers can present a “grid” (long term storyline planning) to Vince, HHH and Stephanie for review, Undertaker needs to be examined, as he is “not medically cleared” as of yet.

A member of the writing staff told us “this is going down to the wire, and members of the team actually joke that we’ll find out on the Internet about Taker before we’re told definitively here!”

No word yet on when Undertaker will be evaluated for medical clearance.

Update On Money In The Bank At WrestleMania 29

17

As of this weekend, there will be no Money in the Bank match at WrestleMania 29. There had been some talk of bringing the gimmick match back to WWE’s biggest show of the year, but the feeling is that Money in the Bank can stand exist on its own pay-per-view and WWE will already have enough big matches to fill the WrestleMania card.

The upside of Money in the Bank is that WWE can get multiple underutilized mid-card wrestlers on the show in a single match. It’s possible WWE will do a pre-show battle royal in order to give out as many WrestleMania paydays as possible, as we’ve seen in recent years.

Additionally, Dolph Ziggler still has his Money in the Bank briefcase and it wouldn’t make sense to have a new Money in the Bank briefcase won before he cashes in.

Jim Ross Blogs About This Weekend’s WWE Tryout Camp & NXT

1

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Thursday’s NXT Tapings: “The NXT TV taping was another great learning experience for all involved. Tag Title tournament culminated along w/ several Divas getting significant TV exposure. As w/ any TV taping, some facets were better than others but in developmental that’s the nature of the beast. Working in WWE Talent Development is a wonderful assignment for me and allows me to contribute to WWE’s future & give back to our business. Helping the young broadcasters is extremely rewarding for me. Being able to offer positive motivation to all those who are just beginning they’ve career journey is rewarding & allows me to come away from each assignment feeling better about my day.”

WWE’s Weekend Tryout CampIn Tampa, FL: “The NXT tryouts started somewhat slowly on an extremely long Friday but Saturday was a superb day. The retention from Friday to Saturday w/ the drills was exceptional. Focus was improved, everyone seemed to be more comfortable. Fun day.”

“Sunday will wrap up the process for the 30+ young men who were invited. Promos & more matches on tap before we wrap things up. If we can replicate the productivity we experienced Saturday, I’d expect a nice handful of offers to be extended over the next few weeks. Getting a WWE contract is daunting but well worth the effort and sacrifices it takes to get a shot at the Promised Land.”

“I choose to mention no names as that wouldn’t be professional in my opiomion but I’ve compiled my short list of those seriously in the hunt.”

Steve Austin Talks About Today’s WWE Stars & The Importance Of Experience

6

During his regular guest column for the UK’s Fighting Spirit Magazine, WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin spoke about today’s current WWE superstars – and the importance of having a solid wrestling foundation before getting pushed into the spotlight.

“Today’s guys are very impressionable, and don’t really call it in the ring anymore,” Austin said. “Some of the guys don’t know whether to shit or wind their watch; when they get in the ring, they have some basics, but they’ve always been told exactly what to do before they go out there. Back in the day, we were calling it all in the ring; we didn’t have anything to be nervous about, because we didn’t have to remember anything. All I had to do was listen to a hellacious worker like Billy Joe Travis or Jimmy Jack Funk, trusting them to help lead me through it.”

He continued, “The guys today are on a big stage, and none bigger than WWE. It’s up to the promotion to bring these cats in light, establish them, and help them get over. You can’t just bring in someone new and expect them to work a Wrestlemania calibre match right away. If you give someone a monster push right off the bat, but don’t give them the base knowledge, it makes no sense to wonder why they shit the bed. These kids are exposed after a few weeks of TV, because they don’t have the experience of what to do in that situation. The more knowledge you have, the better chance you have of being successful”.

Bret Hart Continues To Rant About Triple H (Video)

55

Arda Ocal spoke with former WWE Superstar Bret “Hitman” Hart after his recent comments about Triple H being an overrated, mediocre wrestler.

“There’s nothing to read between the lines. Take what I said and that’s my opinion. It’s not really fair to take it and make too much of an issue,” Hart said. “I only worked with Triple H from about 1992/3 to ’97. I haven’t worked with him since then. It’s not really fair for me to assess his abilities over the last ten years. But, my knowledge of him is – I still say he’s a decent wrestler. I wouldn’t put him in the top 1,000 great wrestlers.”

“To me, he was a very mediocre wrestler and I never saw him contribute an idea in my life. Whereas, I can look at different wrestlers and say, ‘They contributed ideas and made suggestions that were valid and helpful to constructing a decent match.’ But, I never saw any genius coming out of Triple H, nor in his matches.”

Regarding Triple H’s Hell in a Cell match against The Undertaker at last year’s WrestleMania, he said, “I look at the match he had last year with Undertaker, like I said in that interview I was quoted as saying, ‘I give it a four out of ten.’ I think that was generous. It was a four out of ten. But, you have to understand Undertaker was hurt and there were circumstances that maybe I’m not privy to. So, I wouldn’t make too much of it; it’s just an opinion.

“But, the question was sort of, ‘Do I think that Triple H can carry the torch for the company and be the genius that Vince was?’ And, maybe he can, maybe he can’t. Let’s hope he can. But, if he can’t, it won’t be that big of a surprise to me because I never saw any great genius come out of him all the years I knew him.”

Asked if he knows if Triple H is aware of his comments and if their relationship will suffer because of what he’s said, Hart replied, “We don’t have that much of a relationship.”

He continued, “It doesn’t matter to me – he can speak his mind about me and I can speak my mind about him. I can speak my mind about Shawn Michaels or Triple H. I think what people expect from me and they always get from me is the truth. At least my honest opinion. Too bad for someone who takes exception to that.”

Also in the interview:

– Bret comments on his appearance at the Montreal Screwjob panel at the Royal Rumble and if he’s sick of telling that story. “Sometimes in talking about it you get a new perspective on it.”

– He says it doesn’t bother him that Shawn doesn’t really remember the incident. “It doesn’t surprise me. Shawn had his problems back then.”

– Having high praise for Alberto Del Rio and accepting his new nickname the “Canadian Del Rio”

Here’s the interview:
