WWE’s Plans For January 7th & 14th RAWs, Vince’s Mindset

49

WWE is looking to kick of 2013 with a bang. With RAW’s struggling ratings sinking even lower for the final two taped “holiday” shows of 2012, next Monday’s live show represents a fresh start for the company’s flagship show and steps are being taken to jumpstart the new year.

Next Monday’s RAW will be up against stiff competition with the college football BCS Championship game, so WWE is bringing in The Rock for a special appearance and will feature WWE Champion CM Punk defending against Ryback in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match. According to sources in WWE, there are big plans for Monday’s RAW that will have everybody buzzing by the time 11:15pm (ET) rolls around.

The following week (1/14) is the 20th Anniversary of WWE RAW – and there will be appearances from various WWE legends to add some star power to the historic night. With the show taking place from Houston, Texas – it’s possible we’ll see appearances from local legends The Undertaker, Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels. It’s also rumored that WWE will announce the first inductee into the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2013 that night.

Big picture, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon is gearing up for WrestleMania season and won’t be wasting any time shaking things up. There are reportedly plans for every RAW this month to be “stacked.”

Ric Flair To Wrestle In Japan Later This Month

8

Following up on our earlier report about Ric Flair appearing for All Japan Pro Wrestling later this month, it has been confirmed that the 16-time World Heavyweight champion will indeed be stepping into the ring to compete.

Ric Flair will team with Keiji Mutoh (Great Muta) against Tatsumi Fujinami Seiya Sanada. The match will take place on January 21st at AJPW’s live event from Ota, Japan.

The match has some historical significance, as Flair has history with both his partner Mutoh and his opponent Fujinami. Flair feuded with Mutoh in the NWA back in 1989 and the two have never teamed up together. Flair had also a memorable feud with Tatsumi Fujinami, with the two squaring of at the very first WCW Superbrawl pay-per-view back in May 1991.

Update On Brock Lesnar’s WWE Return & Future After WM29

62

– With WrestleMania season just around the corner, one match that appears to be set in stone is a SummerSlam rematch between Brock Lesnar and Triple H. Lesnar will be returning to WWE television in late February and will be making regular appearances on RAW to build up to his high-profile match on April 7th.

Lesnar signed a 1-year deal with WWE last year after WrestleMania and his contract expires right after WrestleMania 29. At this point, it’s unknown whether he will be willing to sign on for another year, but WWE will probably make him a strong offer at that time – as they were very satisfied with the box office performance and quality of his matches with John Cena at Extreme Rules and Triple H at SummerSlam. Paul Heyman’s prominent role on WWE television can’t hurt the chances of Lesnar sticking around for another year, but likely won’t be the deciding factor in his decision.

In the event that Lesnar does not want to wrestle again after his match with Triple H, WWE will once again be faced with the annual “WrestleMania hangover” dilema of their special attraction talents (Lesnar, The Rock, The Undertaker, Triple H) leaving.

Nigel McGuinness On Blading In Wrestling, Why He Never Had A Final ROH Match

5

Promoting his documentary, “Last of the McGuinness,” Nigel McGuinness spoke with The Shining Wizards podcast. Highlights from the interview are as follows.

On making the documentary: “It took a lot of work. Lot of hours in front of the computer, editing it. I really had to learn every step of the way, from the very beginning, what camera to get, what computer, what editing software, how to cut it together, where to get music, how to get rights to footage and photos, getting everyone to sign releases, and then to actually get the thing produced, where to get it made, how to design the case, and then obviously how to let people see it, the people who supported the project from day one, had to let them have their “sneak peek” before anyone else. Every step of the way it was a learning process. A bit of a headache, but it was worth it in the end.”

On the lengthy editing process: I don’t think I was really aware until I actually started editing together what was there. And I remember, having finished the documentary tour, having seventeen hours of footage and feeling like there’s not really that much there. I was kind of looking for a moment, sort of moments, where something happened and I would go “OK, that will be it.” And there wasn’t a whole lot of them. There was the time on the plane where Bison Smith had died, I was very upset, and I knew that was a pivotal moment for me. But the majority of the tour was a lot of me being introspective, thinking about my career, being negative and hard on myself. In and of itself it really didn’t play well, and I knew I had to find a way to put it in the right framework, telling a story. That was part of what took so long to get to this stage.

On blading: “It was more of a concern after it happened (finding out he had contracted Hepatitis B). I was always concerned, ever since I used to go and wrestle for Ian Rotten, for IWA-Mid South. A lot of times there were so many hardcore matches on his shows that the ring would just be filled with bodily fluids, like blood, sweat, and shards of glass, and all this horrible stuff, and I remember thinking then, like God, I’m scared to death of getting in that ring. You didn’t even want to do a forward roll ’cause you were scared of something cutting you. And then in other points of my career, I only got color, intentionally bled one time in my entire career. I didn’t really want to do it then. I don’t think my concern so much at that point was the issue of diseases and stuff like that. I think at that point I didn’t believe in it from an artistic standpoint. I thought it was a kind of cheap way of trying to get a reaction. I didn’t know what I was doing, everybody else did it, I didn’t think there was a need for it. So certainly after what happened to me, yeah, it became more of an issue from a health standpoint. It was always a concern, but obviously when it hits that close to home, it changes your viewpoint… It happens by accident sometimes, and I think that’s why I’m so gung ho about trying to get these changes made in wrestling because even if you stop the intentional blood loss, sometimes it happens by accident. So there are changes that I think anybody with any kind of conscience, intelligence, should really implement in today’s world, knowing what we do know about infections diseases. I don’t believe people should intentionally blade anymore. I think it’s outdated, first of all, and I think the risks far outweigh the rewards. I hope, eventually, in time, wrestling fans will look at it the same way. Much the same as ten years ago, when you saw somebody hit somebody else in the head with an unprotected chair shot, the crowd popped. Now when you see it, the majority of wrestling fans are turned off by it. They don’t want to see it anymore because they understand the things that are inherent in that. But even aside from the intentional blood loss I think it’s important that we police ourselves on the independent wrestling scene. Get tested regularly, there’s a vaccine for Hepatitis B, that you can get cheaply from your local health department, something in Ring of Honor that we’re aware of and we are working on at the moment, to work basically a workable protocol given the fact that we don’t have the big money like TNA or WWE, but we do want to make sure that we protect the guys, and at the same time show some of the best wrestling in the world. So these were a lot of the things going around in my head ever since I tested positive… These are important things to me and things I feel would be amiss if I didn’t mention it. I could have very easily not talked about it and said, “well, dodged a bullet with that one, I’m perfectly OK now.” But I don’t think that would be fair, I don’t think that would be just for me to stand by knowing that people would, you know, could, conceivably contact something else; it could be far worse for somebody else, a lot of guys with Hepatitis C that don’t even know about it now, HIV as well. There’s another part in the movie where a wrestler that came up with me that had HIV. It’s a very scary situation if you think about it and I just think that these changes need to be made and I hope, somewhat, that the documentary contributes to that. I’m not going to get on a soapbox and tell people they have to do this, everybody has their own choice. If people think I’m being way over the top and it’s not that important, and that what happened to me was purely by chance and they shouldn’t make any changes whatsoever, well, that’s their choice. But by the same token, everybody I’ve talked to about it in the wrestling business at least seems to agree with me, and that being the case, they also have the choice to not be around somebody who’s bleeding. So I’d like to see these changes made, and I’d like to have the discussion out there.”

Why he never had a last match in ROH: “At the time I had just started back with Ring on Honor doing the commentary at that point, and so any last match in Ring of Honor would have been without any build whatsoever, and I think they kind of felt, and I think they argued rightly so as well, they just didn’t want to throw it out there without any build. If I was going to have one last match there they would like to have built it up so it meant something. And also I could understand that. But at the same time I wasn’t going to wait around three months to have that final match. And I also felt like the last match I had with Dragon (Bryan Danielson) in Ring of Honor I always felt was going to be my last match in Ring of Honor. Not that I was like I couldn’t possibly top that match, I think from an emotional standpoint it was one of our better matches, but we had better matches from, I dunno, a number of stars or reaction, or gauge, or whatever else. Bottom line is I felt as though one last match in Ring of Honor wouldn’t have added anything to my career there. I didn’t want to be one of those guys that said I was retiring and then didn’t retire. And I genuinely feel- and it’s something that was kind of sacred to me ever since I started wrestling. Les Thatcher, who trained me in Cincinnati, always instilled a good sense of pride in being a professional wrestler, even though a lot of the world kind of mocks us and we’re very stigmatized to a lot of people, who maybe just only ever see a little bit of WWE and think that’s all professional wrestling is. I think Les instilled that sense of pride and that sense of art and that sense of going out there and having pride in what you’re doing and pride in the way you look, and pride in the matches you’re having. And that being the case when I have my last match, I’m not going to have another match because it would take away from that. There are guys now who are better wrestlers than me, who are younger, who deserve that spot on the card. If I wrestle on any show it’s just gonna take a spot away from a young guy that deserves that spot more than I do. I’m very happy with my position in Ring of Honor right now, doing commentary and a little bit of matchmaking as well. So I’m okay with it. It just didn’t fit with the retirement tour.”

CM Punk Title Reign Video, The Miz Picks WWE’s Five-Star Match Of The Week

1

– This week’s WWE Classics Five-Star Match of the Week was chosen by The Miz. Here’s what he said about his selection, the classic Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels from WrestleMania 19:

“One of my favorite matches of all time was Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania in Seattle at Safeco Field. The reason why it’s my favorite is because I enjoyed the build up toward it with the story that Chris Jericho always wanted to be Shawn Michaels. He dressed like Shawn Michaels, did moves like Shawn Michaels and he felt that he was better and he could beat Shawn Michaels. Not only had he become a big star like his hero, but he also felt like he was better than his hero. They put on this spectacular match that was high-flying, hard-hitting, and just everything you want in a Five-Star Match. The greatest thing, in my opinion, was the ending. Shawn Michaels pins Chris Jericho, and then Jericho has this emotional moment where he’s almost crying. And you feel it. You feel the inner kid coming out of Chris Jericho. And they both go for that hug and you’re seeing this wonderful moment, and then the mean Chris Jericho comes out. He gives Shawn Michaels a low blow, shoves his face and walks out triumphantly. He didn’t win, but the thing you remember from that night was Chris Jericho making you feel that emotion.”

Trailer Released For The Chris Jericho Hosted “Robot Combat League” On Syfy

4

Syfy has released the trailer for a new Real Steel-like reality series hosted by Chris Jericho premiering Tuesday, February 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Each week, “Robot Combat League” will feature tournament-style battles between eight-feet tall, state-of-the-art humanoid robots controlled by human “robo-jockeys.”

Syfy describes the program as: “The idea of robots in battle has captured the imagination for generations. Now, through ground-breaking engineering, the fusion of a human’s fighting spirit with a powerful robotic machine built for destruction has become a reality. This extraordinary new series will feature twelve teams consisting of a fighter (a “robo-jockey”) and a robotics engineer (a “robo-tech”) from myriad backgrounds including a race car driver, an Olympic athlete, a National Guard helicopter pilot along with a mix of professional fighters and software engineers. Each team is paired with its own unique robot and will fight in a first-of-its kind competition using a high-tech exo-suit that translates their movements to their robot. Each fight consists of three rounds of intense action, with the winning team advancing in the competition.

In his role as host, Jericho will set up each week’s fight and provide viewers with a play-by-play commentary of the fighting action. Jericho began wrestling at age 19 and is one of the most popular champions in the history of the WWE. In 2001 he was crowned the first ever WWE Undisputed Champion and has been named one of the top five most charismatic performers of all-time. Jericho was also a popular contestant on season 11 of Dancing With the Stars and is the lead singer of the #1 charting hard rock band, Fozzy. The two-time NY Times best-selling author grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, and now currently resides in Tampa, FL.

The robots of the Robot Combat League were designed and created by robotics expert, Mark Setrakian, a leader in the sport of robotic combat. In his distinguished career, Setrakian has developed life-saving robotic systems, and pioneered cutting-edge creature effects, animatronics and control technology for such films as Men In Black, The Grinch and Hellboy. Setrakian combines a keen study of biology with innovative engineering to create robots with uncanny organic movement, earning his reputation as the man who brings machines to life.”

Michelle McCool Discusses Stephanie McMahon: Pulled Aside Backstage, Intimidating, Future of WWE

13

MichelleMcCool.Net has released more highlights from their recent interview with former WWE diva Michelle McCool, wife of the Undertaker.

H.B.I.C.: “I think she is one of the most powerful women in wrestling, to this day, is Stephanie McMahon — and I don’t mean what y’all think I mean. On TV, she is just one of the most powerful characters. From playing ‘The Queen Bitch,’ to the ‘Billion Dollar Princess,’ to even coming out not too long ago to give it to Paul Heyman.”

Boss Lady: “She’s awesome in every possible way. From mic work to bumping — I remember her taking the DDT off the top ropes from Randy Orton, oh, my gosh! From her facials to everything… she is just great, and she’s great to work for. She’s a great boss: creative, always wants you to do your best, always there to offer advice — honest advice, which is sometimes rare to find. She shoots from the hip, which I just love. Why beat around the bush? She’s also very hands-on when she’s at the shows. Can’t say enough positive things about Steph.”

The Real Legacy: “Of course, she’s so powerful. And if you’re a true fan of the business, obviously you know the legacy is there. She can be intimidating, not intentionally by any means, but I was intimidated because of the amount of respect I had for her and for her family.”

Pulled Aside: “I do remember during one pre-tape, it was with a few of the girls, and I remember her saying: ‘Michelle, come into the bathroom real quick, I need to tell you something.’ I’m thinking: ‘Oh, no. She doesn’t wanna embarrass me about how horrible I am in front of other people — which is nice, but she’s still about to tell me gosh knows what. So we go in there and she’s like: ‘I think you need to shave your armpits.’ I raise them up, and I’m like: ‘No, I shave my armpits every day!’ So when I raise them up, I’ve got black fuzz from my sweatshirt, but she was calling me in there to tell me. Stuff like that, she’s just funny.”

The Future Unfolds: “She can give good direction and really help your character grow. I don’t know if there are many people that I enjoy watching on TV than her. You can hate her on TV but absolutely love her backstage. I think she’s and such a strong woman… and that’s the type of person that I look up to, the type of person that I admire. I think as long as she’s there behind-the-scenes, the business will continue to do nothing but grow. I love her as a person, and I am very, extremely, fortunate to call her a friend.”

Chris Masters Talks About His First WWE Run, If He Would Work For TNA Again & More

9

Former WWE superstar Chris Masters was interviewed by Kayfabe Wrestling Radio on Tuesday Night. He spoke about his first WWE run and whether it was a case of “too much too soon” for him, what it was like working with veteran performers at his first WrestleMania, whether he would wrestle for TNA and more. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

His feelings about the current status on the indies and if he wants to see himself in TNA: “I mean, I really enjoyed working for TNA and the Ring Ka King project because it was a great crew all around; Jeff Jarrett was awesome. It was definitely a different environment from the WWE and I did do a dark match with them and it went very well, but I will say this: I am happy with what I’m doing because I’m able to have the freedom of my schedule in being able to book myself out there for indy shows. For instance, if I was with TNA right now, I wouldn’t be able to do Crossfire, because they don’t let their guys do TV gigs anymore. It’s definitely something I have interest in, I mean it just comes out to my only passion is wrestling and I’ve devoted my whole life to it. So, you just have to look at what your options are on the table and, you know, there’s not many. You pretty much have it laid out; you can do what I’m doing right now where you can aspire for TNA but the only place you’re going to get rich is WWE. So that’s just the comparison I make, throwing off TNA a little bit. I would definitely love to be with WWE again possible but it’s like a trade-off. WWE is a very stressful job that basically devours your life; you’ve got to be married to it and it’s hard to always enjoy it. So, with what I’m doing now, you can’t get rich but you can make a living and you can still perform the art of professional wrestling and just enjoy doing it.

“Not all indy shows are the best, obviously, but there’s pockets here and there that you can go to, like Crossfire for instance, where you have live and passionate fans; if you have a venue that’s built for 2,000 and it’s filled, you get the same adrenaline rush as you would, say, for 19,000 people because you have that condensed energy. So, it’s a lot of fun to me and I just enjoy doing it so I’m going to keep doing it as long as I can whether it be continuing indy wrestling, Whether it be TNA or WWE or Japan, whatever. But I’m also at other revenue streams, of course.”

If being in the ring with veterans like Big Show and Kane at his first Wrestlemania helped: “One thing about, especially that first run in WWE was that I worked with a lot of guys like that. I worked with Big Show and Kane and Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Hunter. I mean, you would think one would be more nervous, probably, going out to work with those guys but, to be honest, I mean there’s just more comfort because they’ve been in every situation in the book and these guys are, they just; things do go wrong and they will fix it, you know? So, I could always at that point in my career, especially if I was with a guy like Big Show or Kane or Shawn Michaels or someone that was better than me, I could have a good match. I couldn’t necessarily lead a guy that at my level or below to a good match. That was something, in my second run that I learned to develop; just through years in the business and it just takes time. I got signed at 19 and was rushed onto the stage within a couple of years so by the time the second run came around it was I had been wrestling for about 8 years and you start to understand what they mean by storytelling more, and not thing of matches in the same terms; not of moves and what not but in being emotionally invested. So, that kind of stuff helped me lead guys in my other run, like I became the guy that could have good matches with guys that had less experience than me and pull good matches out of them, you know?”

Was his first run with the WWE a case of ‘too much too soon’: “It was a number of things, you know what I mean? It was too much too soon in that I was too young and immature that I didn’t really appreciate the opportunity that was handed to me because they really had the machine behind me the first time. But, at the same time, I mean I was on course; I would have done well but I did a lot to sabotage myself, as far as I was supposed to win the IC Title at one point and all kinds of things, but I had my personal issues and I had to go to rehab and that was the halting point of my career. So, I wouldn’t have had my personal problems, I don’t think it would have been ‘too much too soon’, and I think I would have been able to develop and get better and continue progressing; my career wouldn’t have hit such a dramatic halt. And then, after I did hit that halt, it was such a climb from that point thereafter just to get any kind of momentum or faith from the office at the same time. So, I’m not putting the blame onto the WWE for putting me up too quick, I’m just saying it was a combination of me being young, being too immature and being too much too quick (like you said) and then me making bad decisions.”

What he feels his best match was and the use of ring psychology in matches: “You watch, when you get the chance, it was on WWE Superstars but fortunately we got about 15 minutes, watch myself versus Drew McIntyre from 2011. It’s like a 15 minute match and I guarantee you, I’d love to hear your feedback on it. But, if you’re big on psychology and storytelling, I think you will really appreciate that match because I think that s one of my top matches. That’s all stuff I got in my last year, it just takes time to develop and WWE had become such a revolving door that not everyone can be Kurt Angle and get it in a year. But, it does come down to getting past move and spots; thinking in terms of psychology and storytelling; the biggest art in the whole match is just telling, you know what I mean.

“Like. being a babyface, being able to convey pain to an audience, and believing yourself so that they also believe. And it’s not to say, we hit each other hard; so that it’s not hard to believe but that is the art of it. If you’re the babyface and you taking a heap, emotionally invest yourself in it and believe that person is beating you down and then bring that into the comeback and that’s how you have an organic comeback and not have something that is forced or somebody is just running up and down screaming; it’s because they went through that whole heap and they got so emotionally invested that they believed it. And then, when it became time to to give it back to that heel, they give it back, you know what I mean? And that story is told with the face, and I’m sure you guys have heard Vince is big on facials (expressions) and that’s why; that’s the reason why. You’ve got to get those emotions but it’s just little things; the psychology, the story telling. You’ve got stuff you just can’; learn within the first year or necessarily the first few years, it takes time.”

Jim Ross Blogs About What He’s Thankful For Heading Into 2013

3

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross posted his final blog entry of 2012 on Monday and gave his thoughts on what the new year has in store for the WWE Universe. This is a highly recommended read that includes JR’s thoughts on the dangers of a complacent locker room, what each man has to do in order to reach their full potential and why WWE’s future is so bright. You can read the full blog at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said he’s thankful for:

@CMPunk never taking no for an answer and grinding it out to become, arguably, WWE’s MVP in 2012.

Guys like @WWEDanielBryan getting his shot and taking advantage of it. He’s one of my favorite wrestlers. When was the last time Daniel Bryan had a ‘bad’ match? Plus, Bryan knew he that had to learn to verbally communicate better to get to the next level and he has.

Long time indy wrestlers like @AntonioCesaro who paid their dues many times over before finally getting to perform at the highest level within his profession. Cesaro is a beast with whom I have great respect.

@HeelZiggler who is so athletically gifted and is beginning to put it all together especially on the mic. I fully expect Ziggler to have a banner 2013 if he stays healthy as Dolph competes at a very physical level.

@WadeBarrett finally being healthy. He’s a keeper and is a smart athlete who will do what it takes to elbow his way to the top and to do what is professionally necessary to stay there.

@WWESheamus is a beloved throwback in our business. Completely professional, a role model for the younger talents and a tough athlete who has not even scratched the surface as to how good he can be. If WWE had a locker room full of talents like Sheamus, they would be ecstatic.

@JohnCena for continuing to do what he believes and for pulling the WWE wagon. John’s Make A Wish work alone will get him to heaven.

@CodyRhodesWWE for turning the corner. Love his upside and hope that he pushes himself to achieve the greatness for which he seems destined.

@TheDamienSandow for never quitting on his dreams.

@JCLayfield for taking some friendly fire at me on @WWE TV and for taking JR’s Beef Jerky along with him on his mountain climbing adventures. John has made WWE TV better since his return. But he’s still a Texan.

@RealKingRegal for spending so much time with me and helping me to keep learning about the business that we both love. Mr. Regal is a wonderful teacher, mentor and historian of the mat game. He’s a valuable asset to the future growth of WWE Talent Development.

@Fgbrisco aka Jerry Brisco for battling his way to good health and for having amazing relationships in the amateur wrestling world that benefits WWE every day and for many years to come. Jerry is a part of my Okie family.

@steveaustinBSR simply for being a great friend and for always keeping in touch no matter how busy he is or where he is.

@shawnMichaels for the man he has become. Shawn is an inspiration to many for the way he lives his life and for what he’s overcome. HBK looked into the mirror and with God’s help changed his life to one that inspires many of us.

Hulk Hogan Talks About The Opening Of His “Hogan’s Beach” Restaurant

8

TNA star Hulk Hogan recently spoke to TampaBay.com about the Grand Opening of his new restaurant, Hogan’s Beach.

Pictures From HOGAN’s BEACH Restaurant

Here are some highlights of what Hogan said about:

The Concept: “It’s going to be Jimmy Buffett’s [Margaritaville] times 10; Hooters times 10. It’s a logical extension of the Hogan brand, with my image and likeness. We’re looking for something like Winter the Dolphin. In 36 years I’ve become so tangible to the public, and not just Americans. We have a chance to have an international draw.”

His Role at the Restaurant: “I see myself almost like a general manager, creatively. I play a fake general manager on Impact Wrestling. But this is for real.”

The New Year’s Eve opening was a huge success, with the restaurant doing big business in its first night open to the public. Among the pro wrestling names that were in attendance were Hogan, Ric Flair, Matt Morgan, Austin Aries, Jimmy Hart, Brutus Beefcake, Bushwaker Luke, TNA Knockout Rosita, former WWE developmental diva Melissa Coates and others.
