Jake Roberts Talking About Wrestling Again, Entering The WWE Hall Of Fame & More

5

Jake “The Snake” Roberts recently spoke with Kayfabe Kickout. Here are some highlights.

Why he decided to do DDP Yoga: I was at a point where I no longer had any hope at all. Synchronized swimming was my second choice. The real truth is I had no place to go but up and I was very fortunate to have a true friend reach out to me.

Transition to moving into DDP’s house: No doubt. The dark place I was at mentally, the trouble I was in physically, and knowing deep inside that it was an all or nothing scenario meant this was my last chance if I was ever going to come out of the deep spiral I was in.

Thoughts on Steve Austin: I love Steve very much and respect him. I believed in him before anybody else. He had been given a raw deal several times in other organizations but I was the first person to step up and say, “This is the guy!” I hate when I’m right.

If WWE or TNA would benefit by bringing back old names: As far as inside the ring, it damn sure wouldn’t hurt. The only question is who would understand it. And who would have the patience to do it?

Using DDP Yoga for possible in-ring comeback: Never say never. But that is not what I’m here for. What my dream may have been in the beginning pales in comparison to the dream that has become. I want to excel in what I’m doing and slay the beast that used to control my life. If Jake Roberts can do these things, bring myself back to health, conquer my demons, then I will become something much bigger than Jake Roberts ever was. That would be an example that you can win the war that you are battling.

If he envisions himself in the WWE Hall of Fame: I envision myself being sober today and anything else that comes along with that is gravy. It would certainly be an honor but it won’t change my life if it doesn’t happen. I love wrestling, second only to my sobriety.

Thoughts on Vince McMahon: Smartest man ever to own a wrestling company. Did more for wrestling than Moses.

Jim Ross Blog: Del Rio’s Title Win, CM Punk vs. The Rock, Foley-HOF

0

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

Del Rio’s World Heavyweight Title Win: Really enjoyed the latest edition of Friday Night Smackdown with Alberto Del Rio @VivaDelRio winning the World Title from the Big Show. Of course, the addition of Rock and CM Punk along with Paul Heyman @HeymanHustle did not hurt a thing either.

Seeing a major title change hands, Smackdown Friday night, on a non PPV was refreshing. @SteveaustinBSR won three WWE Titles on Raw broadcasts while Rock and HHH each won two. You can’t convince me that the biggest, TV audience available seeing things such as this didn’t help further establish the aforementioned stars.

Mick Foley in the WWE Hall of Fame: Getting Mick hired in WWE after I became head of Talent Relations was somewhat more challenging but at the end of the day we signed Mick and he, along with Vince McMahon, recreated himself with the Mankind persona … Being in WWE was Mick’s lifelong, wrestling dream and I’m thankful that I was in a position to help Mick, aka Mrs. Foley’s Baby Boy, with the opportunity to accomplish amazing feats while in WWE.

CM Punk & The Rock’s Feud: Anxious to see what form that @TheRock and @CMPunk engage one another this Monday in Houston on Raw as they continue to build to what seems to be a potentially lucrative Royal Rumble in Phoenix. The challenge of all great talents, and the truly great one’s relish this, is to top what they did last week. Some individuals are born to be main event talents because they love the pressure to excel and to get better with each outing. Some talented guys over the years and likely even on today’s WWE roster might not be wired to handle the pressure of being “the top guy.”

Chris Jericho Discusses Original Plans For WrestleMania 25, Why He Had Greg “The Hammer” Valentine Replaced

6

Chris Jericho appeared on the one-year anniversary show of Inside The Ropes Thursday night where he revealed the original creative plans for himself at WrestleMania XXV in 2009.

Jericho said, “The original plan was to work with Mickey Rourke in a singles match but he was so excited about it he went and said something about it at the Screen Actors Guild Red Carpet. My cousin texted me saying, “Are you wrestling Mickey Rourke? He just challenged you on the red carpet.” This was like three weeks before the Oscars. We were going to announce it after the Oscars but once he said it, his people were mortified and thought it might hurt his chances of winning, so he had to pull out and he didn’t even win the Oscar so it was a bit of a drag. We even already started going in that direction and then he said “no.”

“Vince came up with this Plan B with the legends with Flair, who’d retired the year before, he’d be the ring leader and it was gonna be Piper, Jimmy Snuka and Greg Valentine because Vince’s criteria was it had to be a guy who was in the WWE Hall of Fame and had appeared at WrestleMania 1. Hogan’s name was never mentioned. At one point they talked about Jerry Lawler but he didn’t fit because he wasn’t in WrestleMania 1. I was looking at it like me and Piper, Snuka and Greg Valentine, this match is gonna be shit. I said that to Vince, I told him it won’t be good and he said, “it’s not supposed to be good.” I told him I understand, that but instead of putting Greg Valentine in there, could we put Ricky Steamboat in there. Ricky had just started working there again at the time. He hadn’t wrestled and he didn’t even own his own name, his ex-wife owned the name so they had to get something figured out. There was a little bit of heat there too, and Vince finally allowed Ricky to come in and we did it and it was amazing. He made it.”

Tara Interview – Her Upcoming Documentary, Working With Mickie James, Breaking Her Arm, Being A Trailblazer

1

Former WWE Diva and current TNA star and Knockouts Champion Tara joined The Rack Thursday Night. In a nearly 20 minute interview, she discussed her upcoming documentary about being female in the world of professional wrestling, her feelings seeing the work-in-progress, what it’s like being a such a strong female character, breaking her arm in the famous cage match with Mickie James, her experience with hardcore matches, her feelings about the WWE Divas and how they are handled on TV, where does she the Knockout division going in 2013 and more.

About her upcoming documentary ‘Tarafied’ : “Well, it’s still in the works. He’s still adding onto it. It was done by Matt Goldberg, and he did it as a project for college; he’s a super fan of wrestling and I saw hime backstage here for quite a while and he finally came up to me. He did one on The Pope (D’Angelo), Elijah Burke and it went to Cannes Film Festival in France, so he’s presenting that to Cannes as well and it’s a documentary about how it is to be a female in a male-dominated industry, you know what I mean? So, I’m really flattered; it shows a lot of behind the scenes, things that the fans are not allowed usually to see. So, it’s kind of interesting. He’s still adding on; I’ll be opening a restaurant in Chicago in March and he’s going to be covering that too, so he’ll keep on adding to it and I’m very excited to see how it turns out.”

What she thought when she saw the in-progress work : “I’ll be honest, it’s hard; I mean, I’ve watched it and it’s really hard watching yourself, I find it very difficult. People think they love seeing themselves on TV; I’m the worst, I’m so critical. I’m a perfectionist, like when I watch my matches, I’m never happy with what I did. I mean, there’s always something I’ll beat myself up over and I guess that’s what makes you a better athlete; when you’re constantly criticizing your work. But when I watched that and there were some interviews backstage of what people felt about me and I was so flattered, I cannot tell you. I mean, we live, like, in a small bubble at work here and you don’t realize what live you touch, you don’t know. Because for us, it’s just we come to work, we do our thing, and go back to the hotel maybe work out and go on to the next town, you know what I mean? We are caught up in our own life and we forget, like, what we do and I didn’t realize people felt like that and I got teary-eyed. They interviewed a couple of my co-workers and what they thought of me and I had no idea they felt like that. So, I needed to hear that. It was a good ego boost for me, you know? Everyone needs a little bit of a compliment once and a while.”

On being such a strong female character on-screen and in the business : “It is a hard industry, and I’m not complaining. I love, love, love what I do for a living. I mean, I’m very blessed and I have a passion for this and I think it shows in my work. You have to be cut out to handle this sort of lifestyle. We are gone 250 days a year and this becomes our second family. People say, ‘Don’t neglect your family at home’; it’s unrealistic to say that, because the show much go on; there’s no excuses for missing a show here. It’s entertainment; we don’t have an offseason. We get Christmas off to spend with the family, but I think that’s why you don’t see a lot of females in this industry. I remember when I first got into it, maybe I had been in for about five years, and I’d see new girls come in and trying it out; like remember the Diva Search? I think they had a totally different image of what we did; I think they expected limos to pick us up at the airport, 5-star hotels but little do they know that three girls travel together maybe with a guy, hopefully a guy will travel with us, cause it’s a little dangerous out there; we’re not in rich areas all the time, you know? We’re independent contractors so we split costs; we all rent the same car and sometimes go three to four people in a room, it ends up becoming a really good time, don’t get me wrong. Occasionally, we will room by ourselves; that’s when we’re allowed to be like ‘I need some time to just be by myself’ and zone out in my own hotel room.

So, it’s a lonely road and you don’t cry. You just hurt a lot here; we’re actresses who do our own stunts and you get hurt and just don’t show it, it’s weird. In a normal lifestyle, like actors, if they get hurt, they pull you aside and are like ‘Oh I’m sorry, let me get ice on that’. For us, we don’t show pain, just because I don’t anyone to know that I’m hurt; that means I can’t wrestle the next match. Isn’t that weird? You just damage yourself more when you don’t say anything. It’s just a different lifestyle that we lead and I’ll be honest, if I had a daughter and she told me she wanted to be a wrestler, I don’t know if I’d be all gung-ho about it. I’ll be honest; that means I won’t see her 250 days out of the year and be on the road. You have to have thick skin for the business and I’m one the people that are very, very sensitive and I never got that thick skin. I don’t know what happened, but I’m very sensitive; you can ask anybody that I work with. They go ‘How are you still sensitive and still here?’ and I go ‘I don’t know’. It’s a tough industry but the tough survive. I’ve been doing it 13 years, gosh, I can’t believe it. I still feel like a rookie sometimes. It’s weird, it’s very weird.”

Being a trailblazer and working cage matches as a woman: “They’re scary, I’m not going to lie. I mean, imagine the ring without that cage and you stand on the turnbuckle, you know, when I do my moonsaults looking down, and you’re going to laugh but I have a fear of heights. Isn’t that crazy? And I look outside (the ring) and I go ‘Oh my god’ and you get that little tingly feeling because you’re so scared. And then imagine going to the top of the cage and looking down, to the outside it looks further, but again when you’re in this business; especially when I came to TNA, I talked a big game and said you’ll rarely find me saying no to anything. If you give me in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match, I’ll do it. You give me a cage match or a hardcore match, I’m game. I said, whatever you present to me, I will do the best I can and you won’t be disappointed. And, of course, what do they do, they put in them. Oh my god.”

On breaking her arm in the main event cage match with Mickie James: “It’s scary; with Mickie James, I tore my elbow in the end and it snapped back. I had Earl Hebner say ‘I’m ending it”; they were going to call the doctors and end the match and that was the main event, so I told him, and excuse my language, I told him to ‘f off’ in the ring and he goes ‘No, what’s wrong?’ and I go, ‘I think I broke my arm’. He said, ‘End it, end it; I’m ending it’ and I go ‘No, no. Don’t you dare!’ I’m main-eventing and you’ll have me get rolled up or something? The ending was she went to the top and ‘Theszed’ me from the top of the cage and I caught her and she rolled me up. And then as soon as they tell you, when the ref tells you ‘We’re dark; we’re off camera now’, that’s when my tears burst out. They told me ‘Stay down stay down’ because my arm was, you can see it on camera if you watch it back, it had a weird look to it. I tore my tendon and of course what do I saw when I come back to the agents and all my bosses and stuff? ‘I’m so sorry I hurt myself’ and they’re like ‘Are you serious?! You just got a standing ovation from the boy in the backstage. What other guy would have completed that?? You are tough.’ And I go ‘Yeah, but I hurt myself, I’m so sorry.’”

Jake Roberts Interview: Living With DDP, Getting & Staying Sober

12

WWE legend Jake “The Snake” Roberts recently spoke to Shiningwizards.com about living with DDP at the “Accountability Crib,” what it’s like to be sober for the first time in years and much more. Here are the highlights:

On his sobriety and the struggle: It’s really cool, you walk into my bedroom here at the Accountability Crib, that’s what we’re calling it (DDP’s house), and right to the right there’s a big frame, a real nice frame, no money spared on that, and inside is my first drug test that I’ve passed. And I’ve got many more. Many more. I’m sixty-seven days clean and I’m not missing it at all, man- there’s been a couple of moments where I’m like “Sonofabitch, I’d like to have a drink,” you know. One was yesterday, I had to do an MRI, and I’m claustrophobic… you’re in the gigantic machine, it drops down to about an inch above your face, and all the noises start, it’s really horrible, man. It’s really funny, when you hit something that really bothers ya, damn, it bothers ya, clean or dirty. And those things bother me. It’d been twenty-something years since I had the last one. It was a tough moment for me, and I shouted “gosh darn it, I need a drink.’ But I didn’t mean it. I was just playing with my mind. ‘Cause sometimes you gotta lie to yourself to keep from running from the truth.

On the happenings at DDP’s house, including his routine and his diet: Especially for me- he spends a lot of time yelling at me, saying “quit doing that!” And what he means is, quit working on the house. ‘Cause I like doing woodworking, things like that. And I’m a clean freak… Once I messed my shoulder up- It’s funny how goofy my mind works sometimes. Like, here I am in this horrible pain, and I’m watching the other guys work out, and I’m jealous. I’m pissed off. Dammit, I wanna work out, you know? Which is really different, I might have felt like that before, but never about working out, it was about drugs or something, you know? But you get to feeling good about yourself, and you just want to do the right thing all the time. At first, it was kind of dodgy, ’cause you have to remember what the right thing was. And my mind was pretty cloudy. It had a lot of moments that weren’t real clear. But now that my mind’s clear, I know what I wanna do, and I know before I even do it what the right thing is. Before, doing the right thing was a hit-or-miss thing. But living here, I wake up 7, 7:30 in the morning; last time I did that I was usually going to bed. That’s not a good thing. I hit the hot tub, get the parts to moving, and I’m ready to work out. I’m ready to sweat, ready to get after it. That’s what we do every day. And we eat right. That’s what so nice; for all the pain you spill out, you’re being twisted in all these positions. This ain’t your momma’s yoga, as you all know. You’re not sitting in a corner holding your thumbs up humming or anything. There ain’t none of that shit going on. There’s a lot of squealing and a lot of barking, maybe, but none of that. But eating right is such a big part of it. What I found out is, eating good actually tastes better than the crap I was eating before. No gluten, and no dairy. The only thing that bothered me about dairy was no cheese, ’cause I love cheese, man. But then I found out there’s cheese you can eat, which is sheep cheese. It’s awesome. It’s friggin awesome stuff, man. And it’s not bad for you… Then we get on this stuff called chuice… I detoxed on it. Not so much off of drugs but off of bad food. And I’d wake up in the morning and I’m like “alright, somebody came in my room last night and pissed on me,” ’cause I smelled like piss. It’d be okay if they left me a dollar or something, but they didn’t even do that. But it wasn’t. It was my body excreting all these toxins and stuff that had been built up in my body for so friggin’ long, you know? I probably could’ve sold that shit to some junkie somewhere, he could’ve refined it and smoked it or something… I can’t believe how much clearer my mind is, my speech is much clearer… It’s not a concentration camp here, it’s about loving each other, and reaching out, helping each other, and positive attitude.

On his current state: I’m fixing this old body up… I have a positive attitude, I feel good about myself. I think the funniest thing that’s happened since I’ve been here is I was taking a shower about three weeks ago- I take a shower every day, just wanna make that clear, if you’re thinking “Jake’s a stinkin’ sonofabitch.”- I look down and I’m like “Oh, my God, I’ve got six toes!” But it wasn’t a toe, it was my penis!” I hadn’t seen it in a few years, you know? And I’m looking down like, “Damn, somebody must’ve exchanged mine.” ‘Cause mine was much bigger… As silly as that sounds, man, it’s like, “Damn, it’s good to see that.” You know, I’m getting thin, I’m 247 pounds. So I’ve lost 60 pounds, and I want to drop about 15-20 more. And lean and mean, man, getting around- if I get down on the floor I can get up by myself now. Even with the bad shoulder, it’s not much fun but I can still do it. Before, you’d have to help me out of a chair. I couldn’t get up, man. You know, I’ve had hip replacement, I had part of my left foot removed, two discs out of my neck. Okay, I know my shit’s all busted up. But doing this program of Dallas’- I’m doing shit with my body I’ve never did before. And I wouldn’t have thought I would have ever wanted to do it. But now I’m challenging my body to try new things, to bend new ways, to twist new ways, to open things up. My hips feel so much better, my feet feel so much better, my hands, i can straighten my fingers out now. Before I couldn’t straighten my fingers out… they said I’ve been hit in the head too many times, yeah, and my brain misfires, and it was causing my fingers and my toes to contract. Which is okay for some things when you’re right-handed, but it’s not good for your feet. I would be walking, and my toe would catch in the carpet, and then I’d be bending over, and of course I’d be stepping, and I’d break it again. So I was breaking toes quite often, which is not a really a cool sound to hear. “Oh, shit, there’s another one.” Now they’re straightening out, I can move them again. But the bottom line is, I can actually dream again, man. You see, I was to the point where I would get so angry when I’d wake up in the morning, saying “Sonofabitch, I’m still alive.” I’d be pissed off. I mean, as sick as it sounds, it’s the truth. If I heard somebody died, I would be jealous. What a lucky bastard. ‘Cause I wanted to die. I wasn’t suicidal because I had hurt my family and kids enough doing the stupid shit I’d already done. I wouldn’t do that. But, man, I was sure hoping for death. And I hadn’t had a dream in so many years, where something positive, you know, something good, and now I’m thinking of good stuff to do, fun stuff to do. Last week I actually went and walked up Stone Mountain. I know they always introduced me from Stone Mountain, that’s a rib on the fans, too. I’d only been there about 3-4 times in my life… I actually went and did that. It’s not an easy trek up there. Takes about 45 minutes of walking at a pretty good pace. The hard part about it is, Stone Mountain is not a smooth trail up there. You gotta step up and move, and get up there. We put some of that on YouTube and I’m gonna start doing that every week. If somebody told me six months ago I’d actually be able to get up that sonofabitch, I’d have laughed in your face, called you a liar, and tried to punch you because I’d thought you were trying to be cute and make a joke or make fun of me. That’s how bad my body was. But hell, I went up that sonofabitch. I’m gonna try and do it every week. Now my goal is to actually run up the damn thing… It may take me a year, but by God I’ll tell you something, at some point, if I stick with this program, I’m going to. Ain’t nothing stopping me now… Y’all couldn’t handle Jake when he was screwed up, what the hell are you gonna do with me now?

On inspiring others: If you’re walking around in a negative cloud, not being positive or uplifting about yourself at all, then how the hell are you expecting to move forward? You can’t. You’re stuck in crap. I just know that there’s so many people that I will affect with my journey to sobriety and my journey to health that it will mean so much more on the big scheme of things than my wrestling career ever did. There’s millions of people out there that never watched wrestling, they don’t know Jake, but I can give you a list of shit that I have overcame, and if that don’t inspire you, then kiss my ass… Three of my kids called me on a conference call, and they said, you know, “Dad, we’re always proud of ya, what you accomplished in the ring. You did so much. What you’re doing right now- [what you’ve done in the ring] pales in comparison to what you’re doing right now.” And for my kids to tell me that, to tell me they were proud of me, you know, that kicks ass… Life is a beautiful thing, but life is what you make it. I spent 57 years making mine a mess, and I ain’t doing that no more.

NXT Head Trainer Replaced, Punk & Ziggler Team, NXT Star Works WWE Show

– WWE NXT star Leo Kruger worked last night’s WWE live event from Austin, Texas, losing to Zack Ryder. This is the second week in a row that Kruger was on the road with WWE, so it looks like he’s being evaluated for a main roster call-up.

– CM Punk returned to action at Friday’s live event from Austin, TX. Punk came out at the beginning of the show saying that he was taking the night off because he “doesn’t like the fans.” Later in the show, Vickie Guerrero said Punk had to wrestle – and would team up with Dolph Ziggler against the team of John Cena and Ryback in the main event. Cena got the pin on Dolph Ziggler to win the match for the babyfaces and one of our live correspondents said that Punk did not do too much during the match.

– Bill Demott has been relieved of his duties as the head trainer of NXT and will be replaced by Billy Gunn. There is a lot of speculation as to whether DeMott is still with WWE, but the recent controversy with a former WWE developmental talent accusing DeMott of hazing his students and making them train naked probably didn’t help his situation.

– The Rock’s promo from SmackDown was heavily edited, with several minutes of his interaction with Team Rhodes Scholars cut from the final broadcast. At one point, The Rock called Damien Sandow a “d-bag” and the crowd began chanting along, with Sandow shouting “Silence!” It was a very funny moment and Youtube user Ajdagreat1 sent us the following video he took showing part of what was edited off TV:
