What Led To Kelly Kelly’s WWE Release: Risque Photoshoot?

15

As announced last Friday by WWE, the sports-entertainment organization came to terms on the release of Kelly Kelly, ending her six-year run with the company. Her departure had been expected since she decided to take a hiatus in late May.

Those close to the situation thought it was likely her tenure was coming to an end after she was resistant on signing a long-term contract extension and had requested time off from the road. Company officials granted her time off under the belief that she would return full-time. However, those close to her say she wasn’t sure about resuming a full-time schedule and was looking to pursue non-wrestling endeavors.

Her situation is similar to many other talents who have left the company, particularly women, in the past two years. She was forced to reject numerous media offers, either because WWE didn’t want her involved or because WWE has made its product too kid-friendly that companies don’t want to associate with them. The matter is tied to women, because of those limitations.

Since Kelly had already earned her downside guarantee for the year and had no intention on returning full-time, there was no money left for her to earn by not asking for her release. Plus, she wanted to pursue outside opportunities sooner rather than later.

During an advertisement campaign shoot last Thursday for Let It Fly Energy, an energy drink line, she received a text message from Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE Executive Vice President, Talent and Live Events. He informed her that by the terms of her contract, she needed to have a calendar that she planned to sell on her official website approved by the company. She had tweeted previews of some risqué lingerie pictures and the company demanded she take them down. She had no intention on calling off the project, which led company officials to cutting ties with her the next day.

Another factor in Kelly’s resistance to remaining in WWE for several more years could be tied to her health since she had been dealing with neck issues from wrestling. WWE officials requested that she see Dr. Joseph Maroon, the company’s medical director. She preferred to be examined by her own doctor. With the accumulated injuries, she wanted to stop wrestling full-time at the age of 25 rather than be physically broken down years later and too old to pursue entertainment opportunities. It is believed that she would have stayed with WWE had they allowed her to make occasional appearances.

WWE did not perceive Kelly as reaching a level known as the “Mick Foley deal,” where a talent is under contract, works occasionally, and is free to pursue outside endeavors. WWE does not want create a precedent where talent have control over what they do, which is an issue currently affecting their relationship with Chris Jericho.

WWE Ends Contract Negotiations With Chris Jericho, Officials Cautious On Jerry Lawler’s Return After Heart Attack

22

– WWE officials had been negotiating with Chris Jericho on a new contract in recent weeks, but talks fell through. WWE opted to cease talks with the wrestler/musician in recent days.

It is believed that the proposed deal fell through due to control over when he worked as well as his activities outside of WWE. Officials were seeking an arrangement where the company would be his top priority and they would have some control over his outside endeavors. Jericho, on the other hand, wanted complete control of all of his activities.

Jericho was open to returning as early as this month had WWE agreed to his terms. He was looking to work forty to fifty dates per year, including full-time for cycles and even assisting the developmental program. However, he would determine the periods when he worked and would be strictly unavailable during tours, which WWE was not in favor of.

– Three weeks after suffering a heart attack while announcing at a WWE event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Jerry “The King” Lawler stated in interviews in recent days that he is looking to return to the road as early as next month. Within WWE, however, there is no timetable on his return to the announce desk. It is said that company officials will be very cautious on bringing him back.

WWE’s General Viewpoint On Women’s Wrestlers Vs. Models, Developmental Wrestler Loses Weight, Attendance

14

– The general viewpoint among people in WWE is that there are two types of women who join the sports-entertainment organization. There are models who use the company as a stepping stone toward fame due to its substantial television presence. And then there are those who truly love wrestling, with Beth Phoenix and Natalya being the prime examples. However, it is said that the girls who perform for the love of the sport get easily frustrated because there is no reward for being talented in the ring, not to mention that they receive minimal television time to showcase their abilities. The model types are willing to wrestle for a few years, with the hope it leads to a break in the entertainment world, and bolt once they start attracting offers.

– The former Husky Harris, WWE developmental wrestler Bray Wyatt, has lost weight in recent months and is said to be down to 280 pounds. He has received rave reviews for his Cape Fear-esque character, which has been compared to that of former WWE Superstar Waylon Mercy. Many feel he would be on the main roster today if WWE chief Vince McMahon wasn’t negative on his physique.

– Friday’s Raw live event in St. Joseph, Missouri, drew 3,000 attendees paying $80,000. Saturday in Topeka, Kansas, drew 3,500 paying $110,000. Sunday in Wichita, Kansas, drew 4,000 for $125,000. Saturday’s SmackDown live event in Abilene, Texas, drew 3,000 for $95,000. Sunday’s show in Wichita Falls, Texas, drew 2,200 paying $55,000, which would be one of the lowest grossing events of the year.

John Morrison Expected To Return To WWE, Update On Evan Bourne’s Rehab Progress, WWE Stars In New York City

29

– After parting ways with WWE late last year, John Morrison is expected to ultimately return to the organization. This is the belief among many people in the organization.

Though it’s been speculated that he could wind up in TNA Wrestling, there is said to be no interest on Melina Perez, his girlfriend, from either the organization or her former employers. Therefore, he is expected to work for the company that pays him more.

Morrison has regularly competed at independent wrestling events under his real name, John Hennigan, since leaving the spotlight.

– In March, Evan Bourne was involved in an automobile accident which broke his foot in four places and dislocated it in five. In an update on his rehabilitating progress, a timetable for his return to the squared circle still remains uncertain.

– Raw General Manager AJ Lee, as well as Paul Heyman and Mick Foley, were in New York City Wednesday promoting THQ’s WWE ’13 video game. Click here to view photos of the three at a press event.

WWE Contemplating Undertaker vs. Ryback Match At ‘Mania; Has The Deadman Wrestled His Last Match?

49

Despite the strong build for a match between WWE Champion CM Punk and Ryback, it is only being teased at this point and no concrete plans will be made until November or December. The match may not even occur since there has discussion of Ryback facing Undertaker at WrestleMania XXIX, with The Deadman’s undefeated streak at the pay-per-view extravaganza going up against Ryback’s overall undefeated streak. However, some people within WWE have speculated that Undertaker may not even work next year’s show.

With the curtain call finish to his WrestleMania XXVIII match against Triple H, and his wife, Michelle McCool, recently giving birth to a child, it is possible that the bout was his final wrestling match. WWE’s original plans called for the legendary wrestler to compete at WrestleMania XXIX and start building toward a match at around Survivor Series. Many feel he’ll ultimately wrestle on next year’s show, but it’s not considered certain. Whether he competes on the show or not, it will be entirely up to him and not Vince McMahon.

NXT Diva Reveals She Has An Eating Disorder, What “Hell” Means To WWE Stars

14

– To promote WWE’s upcoming Hell in a Cell pay-per-view later this month, WWE.com asked various Superstars to explain what “hell” means to them. Here are some highlights of what they said:

Sheamus: “Well Fella, I’d say waking up in the desert in just my wrestling trunks. Its 110 degrees, the sun is shining and there is no sunscreen, anywhere in sight. That’s my idea of hell.”

Dolph Ziggler: “Being stuck in the middle seat of a plane ride overseas, with a large person who should have purchased two seats on one side and a screaming baby on the other. I don’t like people talking loudly, crying or sweating on me. That would be a horrific experience for me, aka my hell.”

Vickie Guerrero: “Hell? (laughs) It’s a place where AJ Lee plays in her playground.”

Tyson Kidd: “Well, definitely being stuck in a bizarre world where I compete against Yoshi Tatsu every day and then having to listen to Michael Cole’s commentary while I workout and travel.”

Antonio Cesaro: “Hell, to me, is waking up in America every day, going out and seeing Americans in the grocery store — how they behave and how they are overweight. They don’t know how to dress and have absolutely no culture. I have to live with that, every single day. And that is hell to me.”

– In response to online reports that she recently checked into rehab, WWE developmental wrestler Skyler Moon (formerly “Buggy Nova”) revealed on Twitter that she’s not on drugs – she’s getting treatment for an eating disorder.

I love you guys thanks for having my back. I’m not ashamed of my disease, i’m blessed to want to make myself better.”

The message was later deleted.

Jeff Hardy Talks About Returning To WWE, His Personal Demons & More

15

TNA Star Jeff Hardy spoke with the Phoenix New Times to hype TNA Bound for Glory in Phoenix next Sunday night. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

Overcoming His Personal Demons: “I know how I am and what I’ve done and I wish it was as easy for [him] as it was for me I guess. Matt [Hardy] went through a dark period and I was just getting through my stuff and that was tough on me. I was like, “Oh my god, people are different.” I’ve never suffered physical withdrawals from not doing drugs, but that’s what separates me from everybody else, I guess, because I’m not like everybody else. I wish I could explain why some people don’t succeed but I don’t know. I mean all I know is how and who I am.”

His Brother Matt’s Videos Where He Appeared Intoxicated: “Yeah, I hated it. I hated everything he put up. I was embarrassed for him. But that was just stuff that he was going through. If I’m going to put something on YouTube it’s just going to be fun.”

Returning to WWE in the Future: “Man, I really can’t answer that. I’m happy where I’m at right now with TNA. But you never say never in this business, so it depends on where I’ll be at in a few months.”

Backstage News On Why Edge Has Heat With WWE Management

18

WWE Hall of Famer Edge reportedly has a lot of heat on him with WWE management for turning down a Legends contract multiple times. WWE’s most recent attempt to sign Edge came two weeks ago when he appeared on SmackDown.

Edge has not satisfied with the amount of money offered to him and does not want to be restricted with what companies he can appear for.

Edge will be making an appearance for Tommy Dreamer’s new House of Hardcore promotion on October 6th, 2012 in the Mid-Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. A Legends deal would likely prohibit him from appearing on shows like this.

There is also a belief in WWE that Beth Phoenix’s recent departure is partially so she can help her boyfriend, Edge, recover from the neck surgery he is scheduled to undergo next month.

All that said, the relationship is rocky but the door is still open for Edge to appear for WWE again in the future.

Kevin Nash Talks About CM Punk’s Title Reign, Ryback, nWo DVD, Rick Rude & More

12

Kayfabe Wrestling Radio: Hosted by Alan Wojcik & Spug
Listen Live on Tuesday Nights 9pm ET on Wildtalkradio.com
Listen to the Kevin Nash interview here (.MP3)

Former WWE, WCW and TNA Legend “Big Sexy” Kevin Nash joined Kayfabe Wrestling Radio Tuesday Night. In a nearly 40 minute interview he talked about his film career and two of his releases coming to DVD soon (Rock of Ages and Magic Mike), the difference between doing a fan-fest as opposed to what it’s like with WWE or WCW, his views on the NWO DVD release coming soon, has he been contacted to participate with the WWE Network, what does he think of CM Punk’s lengthy title run, what Rick Rude instilled in him coming up, his views on social networking on wrestling today, and much more.

With the New World Order DVD coming soon, does he like that fans of the era can relive it and see new footage of what was done: “I think the body of work still stands out. A lot of it, because we participated in; even though we did it, we’ve never seen it back. There have been so many matches and segments and things that we haven’t seen that sometimes, especially with the production that the WWE has, when they put something together, it’s usually an incredible piece and you sit there and kind of relive it again. You go ‘Oh yeah, forgot about that’. So, I look forward to watching those pieces because it does bring back a lot of memories.

Does he like doing the seminars and working with the up and coming generation: ‘The way I look at it, I was fortunate enough to have guys like (Rick) Rude and (Curt) Hennig and Jake (Roberts) kinda guide me, watch me and critique what I did. So, I mean, if somebody asked me to watch them, I’d definitely do it; I don’t think I’ll be able to give them much of a critique on what they should have done from a trained wrestling standpoint. But as far as telling a story, that’s the number one thing; and that’s what I ask a young guy, ‘What was the story you were trying to tell’ because that is the basis for what we do/ It determines what we’re going to do as far as movement to tell that story. A lot of guys have gotten away from telling stories, they’re more into doing spots and I think that’s kind of hurt the business.”

What he thinks of the lengthy Punk title run: “At the same time, with the progression of the character, and everything they’ve done, I think that he was the Straight Edge and now I mean he is, if you take last night’s show, there’s times when I say ‘That was cheap heat’ and then he finds a way to get out of it with good heat like when he backs off Ryback. I mean, he’s done just such a good job; he’s a good worker he’s great on the mic, and now he’s growing into the part and I don’t see how they could possibly even function and conceivably do three hours of a show without him. And the thing is, the one thing is if you can make the belt mean something then that person can, especially from that heel persona, look over his shoulder and say ‘Oh yeah? Well, if I’m not the best, why do I have this and why have I had it this long?’

What did he learn from Rick Rude and what is lacking from today’s wrestling: Number one, first and foremost, he was an entertainer, but when he did a lot of things to tell a story, I mean he got heat; he was a believable bad ass and he was a dangerous human being. I think that’s one thing missing from a lot of the characters right now; I just don’t believe that those characters right now can physically hurt me. I mean Ryback’s a big dude but Ryback’s not much taller than Phil (CM Punk). I mean Goldberg was 6’4”, 305 lbs.; it was just a different era of guys I think one thing I saw from Ryback last night (vs Tensai at RAW) when did couldn’t do his finisher a couple of times; it’s nothing against him, he was put into that situation and he probably thought he could get him and he didn’t get him, but at the same time, no body is using that spear right now and they’re chanting ‘Goldberg’. To me, go with it. He could use the spear; no one else is using it. He could spear a big guy, it’s like anything else. I mean I used to use the big boot on Yoko(zuna), because there’s no way I could powerbomb him. I always had a secondary finished for a guy you just couldn’t physically put into it. I don’t think it took anything away from him cause the coverage on the announce was Tensai’s experience let him block those two attempts. But if he’d had the spear or a back-up, secondary thing already established, I think it would have helped him out. .”

Concern Over CM Punk Getting Burnt Out, Comparisons Made To Bret Hart

25

With John Cena currently out of action due to injury and Randy Orton off shooting “12 Rounds: Reloaded,” a lot of people in WWE have been talking about the lack of roster depth these days and how important WWE Champion CM Punk is to the company.

Punk has been living the hectic, non-stop lifestyle as WWE’s “top guy” for the entire year and there is some concern that Punk will get worn out like everybody else in that position gets. Some of noted that Punk has looked very tired lately.

With CM Punk being the company workhorse but not still not being viewed as the “top top” guy like John Cena, comparisons have been made to Bret Hart, who was WWE’s workhorse in the mid-90’s but still in the shadow and not on the same level as Hulk Hogan.

Update On Ryback Botching His Finisher On RAW: Did Tensai Sandbag Him?

63

– Ryback’s strong push continued on Monday’s RAW with a decisive win over Tensai and another face-to-face confrontation with WWE Champion CM Punk. There has been a lot of speculation since Ryback’s match with Tensai regarding the botched finish of the match, where Ryback failed to get Tensai up on his shoulders twice and had decided to finish his opponent off with a clothesline instead.

Some people were speculating whether Tensai was “sandbagging” Ryback and intentionally making himself harder to lift. This could have been Tensai being uncooperative and going into business for himself – but it could have also been WWE management instructing Tensai to botch the move as a way of testing Ryback and his reaction.

WWE has a history of testing its top performers who are on the cusp of being pushed to the next level with unexpected situations like this to gauge how they handle themselves.

PWInsider.com is reporting that Vince McMahon was scrambling backstage at RAW when the incident took place and was instructing production workers to edit the spot and make Ryback look as strong as possible. This is a sign that either Ryback simply had trouble getting Tensai up (he had no problem hitting his finisher on Tensai last week on SmackDown) or Tensai was really sandbagging.

It’s worth noting that Ryback’s 2 failed attempts at getting Tensai above his head were edited off WWE’s official Youtube clip of their match.

Here’s the unedited footgae of Tensai apparently screwing with Ryback and preventing him from doing his finisher:

Lilian Garcia Grilled During Radio Interview – Vince’s Sexual Exploits, WWE and Steroids, Unfunny WWE Comedy

13

Promoting her new music album, SmackDown ring announcer Lilian Garcia appeared Monday night on The Nick and Artie Show, a sports/entertainment talk show hosted by comedian Nick DiPaolo and former Howard Stern Show comedian Artie Lange. The hosts did not take it easy on the WWE Diva and songstress as she was grilled throughout the interview with questions regarding Vince McMahon’s alleged sexual exploits, WWE wrestlers using steroids, and WWE’s futile attempts at comedy, among other topics. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

– Artie asks Lilian whether she slept with any wrestlers before she got married, and if WWE chief Vince McMahon ever made a pass at her. She says “no,” adding that she “has really good friends.” Artie says she has morals, but then ponders how she could get a job working for Vince McMahon by having morals.

“He’s awesome,” Lilian says of the Chairman of the Board. “This is my eleventh year working with the company. I’ve been the longest-running Diva there. I would not have stayed or come back—’cause I was gone for two-and-half-years—and I came back. I would not have come back if it was a bad organization. It’s been amazing. It’s a great organization.”

– Artie says he hates today’s wrestlers because “they’re all in too good shape.” He prefers “big goofy-looking guys” like King Kong Bundy over muscular John Cena-types. Nick says “they’re all juicing.” In response, Lilian notes that all of the WWE wrestlers get drug-tested. “Fitness has come a long way. If you look at anybody years ago, fitness has come a long way,” she adds.

Artie asks Lilian whether she has ever used steroids since she’s muscular. She replies “no,” adding that she works out and is a jump rope enthusiast.

– Artie asks Lilian whether she ever saw Vince McMahon force himself on a girl during a “SmackDown Christmas party.”

“First of all, we don’t have SmackDown Christmas parties, so, no (laughs),” Lilian responds.

Artie then asks Lilian whether “she accidentally got in the wrong door and saw Vince McMahon date-raping a girl.” She responds, “Are you just jealous of him?” Artie says “in some ways,” and notes that he has “heard stories about him.” He says he’s heard stories about Vince having “steroid-rage” and being a “date-raper.” Lilian smiles and says Vince is “an amazing man.”

– Following a commercial break, Artie takes issue with WWE’s attempts at comedy. An audio clip of a verbal exchange between Lilian and Tazz from over ten years ago is played, with Tazz first asking Lilian her name. After she states her name, he points to his “nose,” and asks her what is in his hand— “nothing.” Tazz breaks out laughing and says, “Exactly, Lilian knows nothing.” Artie says the dialogue must have been so embarrassing for her, deeming it “unfunny” and “terrible.”

Lilian says “it’s supposed to be a simple ha-ha.” Artie responds, “It’s not even that, it’s not even close. It’s not even in the ha-ha neighborhood. It makes all of you look terrible.
