Exclusive: More Names From Recent NXT Tryouts In Tampa

9

This past weekend, WWE held talent tryouts at their NXT facility down in Tampa, FL. While some names have already leaked out, we have a few more we can exclusively add to the list.

Among the 33 or so hopefuls there fighting for a contract, we already know of Ring of Honor’s Adam Cole (their reigning TV champion) and Mike Bennett, Dragon Gate USA star Samuray del Sol, and Extreme Rising star Luke Hawx, who has previously appeared on WWE television in bit roles. In addition to these names, we can report that in attendance were former TNA star Jesse Neal, Shawn Spears (the former Gavin Spears from WWE’s ECW brand), Shaun Ricker of Championship Wrestling from Hollywood, and a former NFL player who seemed to impress at least one WWE official.

Also there for a tryout was John Mills, who appeared on the Oxygen reality TV series “Love Games: Bad Girls Need Love Too”. He appeared on five episodes during the show’s second season before quitting. According to an old profile page on the Oxygen website, he has wrestled independently before as “The Playboy J-Millz”.

No word on who may have made the cut, but those that do are expected to be notified by WWE within the month.

Velvet Sky Interview: Leaving & Returning To TNA, Angelina Love, WWE & More

25

TNA Knockout Velvet Sky appeared on The Big WrestleShark Show this past Tuesday discussing her TNA career and plans for 2013. For the entire interview, including details of the UK tour and her plans to “let the pigeons loose”, head over to WrestleShark.podbean.com or search WrestleShark in the iTunes store. It was also announced on the show that Bully Ray would be on the show next week.

Here are some highlights of what Velvet Sky said about:

What led to her return to TNA Impact Wrestling:

“TNA is my home, I came here almost six years ago at Bound for Glory and this is my family. All the knockouts all the guys: I couldn’t stay away for too long because I missed it terribly. So the powers that be worked it out for me to come back.”

Anyone she is particularly close to in the company that encouraged her to come back:

“I wouldn’t single just one person out…maybe Madison Rayne. She’s one of my best friends here. She would text me almost every day ‘When are you coming back, we miss you, we love you.’ I mean we go back to the Beautiful People days when we would travel the globe together. But you know I’m friends with the guys, and they would reach out to me and the office would reach out. It just made my decision to come back all that easier.”

What led to her initial departure?

“It was just business issues, it was never personal with anybody. It was just a business decision I had to make is all I’ll say, I had to do what was best for me at the time. It was just me looking out for me. But everything is all worked out now and this is what’s best for me.”

Had she considered going to the competition?

“No…never say never, but you know I never considered it while I was away because this has been my home. TNA gave me my first shot at my dream, so as I said this is my home.”

Opinion on the current Knockout Division:

“Well it is a lot different now, but either way we still have a really great group of girls who make up the division. It’s not the same as it used to be and only because I was here since the birth of the Knockout division six years ago and all the girls like Roxy and Taylor Wilde and Kong are no longer with us. They were the bread and butter of the Knockouts Division, they helped create what is so special now and like I said, the girls we have now are great, but it will never be the same, it will never have that same feel because all the girls that started are no longer with us. But I love the Knockouts we have now.”

On The Beautiful People:

“People ask me what’s my favourite time in TNA and I will always say, we had so much fun, the original, heel Beautiful People; with the makeovers and the brown paper bag treatment and just our heel antics. We had a good run, unfortunately Angelina is no longer with the company but I am going to push all the time for a Beautiful People reunion and hopefully once they get tired of me asking so much, hopefully they’ll bring her back. It’s been my best time in wrestling so far.”

Her reaction to Angelina Love leaving:

“I was so upset, but you know it was out of her hands: she didn’t wanna leave. But she is doing phenomenally well in her outside projects: she’s doing movies and conventions all over the world, she’s right where she was meant to be right now. But I still bother them all the time to let us do one more Beautiful People run but I don’t know if it will happen. I mean never say never, but I don’t know if it will.”

On Beautiful People Imitations:

“My reaction to that is always ‘Often Imitated, Never Duplicated’. We are proud that the success of our tag team inspired other girls to…try and be like us or to imitate us, but there is only one team of the Beautiful People. I say that humbly! So humbly! But the chemistry we had together…no one can replace that, it was an irreplaceable tag team.”

In 2013:

“I’m going to prove to everyone that I am a credible Knockouts champion. I’ve had to fight my way through almost everyone in that division to earn my way to it and I will hold that title soon.”

Remembering The Twin Hebner Angle And Hogan’s First Title Loss

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, HULK HOGAN LOSES HIS MIND (AND THE WWF TITLE)
by The Solomonster ([email protected])
Podcast | Twitter | Facebook

“HOW MUCH MONEY DID THEY SPEND ON THE PLASTIC SURGERY??!”

Those infamous words were uttered by Hulk Hogan on national television 25 years ago today. And astonishingly, Hulk wasn’t referring to his (now ex) wife and her friend when he said that. No, you see, he was referring to the evil trio of Ted DiBiase, Andre the Giant and… EARL HEBNER! What? Earl Hebner, evil? Bret Hart would find out years later exactly how evil Dave Hebner’s baby brother really could be, but let it be known that Hulk Hogan was the original Screwjob victim way back in 1988 when INXS had the #1 hit single in America and the Road Warriors made it cool to wear Zubaz pants.

Here in 2013, Chris Daniels and Frankie Kazarian are trying hard to make Zubaz cool again, but it’s just not the same.

So, why then was the Hulkster ranting and raving like a mental patient about plastic surgery? Let’s set the stage. The date was February 5th. The WWF had been airing taped “Saturday Night’s Main Event” specials on NBC for a few years by this point. As a young wrasslin’ fan, I have fond memories of those shows. The sight of Andre the Giant sneaking up behind an unsuspecting Hogan, following his victory over King Kong Bundy, and wrapping his massive hands around Hogan’s throat, squeezing the life out of him, gave me nightmares. But this show was different. This show, dubbed simply “The Main Event”, aired live on Friday night (back when Friday was perhaps the best night for television) and would feature the first singles meeting between Andre and the champion since their epic encounter at WrestleMania III the previous year.

WWF and NBC hit a homerun that night. The show would do a 15.2 rating, good for 33 million viewers (that number is a bit skewed and likely also includes international viewers, so figure half that number were watching in the U.S. – still impressive), making the Hogan vs. Andre sequel the most watched wrestling match in history, a record that still stands today. Hulk Hogan had headlined as WWF champion for four consecutive years and was arguably at his peak of popularity. Andre, on the other hand, was clearly in physical decline and had long past his peak. In fact, he was barely mobile. One memorable spot from their match saw Andre simply fall face down in what the announcers could only describe as an attempted headbutt (he missed). And maybe it was, but it looked terrible. In fact, as a wrestling match, this pretty much sucked. But with these two guys in the ring, it was never about workrate. That’s what guys like Savage and Steamboat and Santana were there for.

As the match drew to a close, Andre grabbed Hogan and flung him around in the worst excuse for a hip toss I’ve ever seen in my life. As he covered the champion and the referee began to count, Hogan got his shoulder up off the mat, but Hebner kept counting. Just like that, Hogan’s run came to a screeching halt at 1,474 days and Andre was awarded the title.

I guess in hindsight, CM Punk’s 14-month reign ending on a People’s Elbow doesn’t seem nearly as ludicrous.

After the match, Gene Okerlund interviewed Andre, who inexplicably talked about winning the World tag team championship (?!!) and proceeded to surrender the tag team title (don’t look at me, that’s what he said) to Ted DiBiase. And I must say, the title looked awfully good around DiBiase’s waist. I believe he got to defend the title at some house shows in the days that followed before Jack Tunney officially declared the title vacant, but it really is a shame he never had a run on top.

As Hogan stood flabbergasted by what had just taken place, THE GOOD HEBNER emerged to confront his evil twin. It’s funny because, while Dave and Earl do look very much alike, I never had much trouble discerning one from the other, even as a kid. Dave was always the pudgier one. Maybe he was simply big-boned. Whatever the case, when Hogan turned around, he could not believe his eyes, nor could he tell one from the other. He figured it out when Earl knocked his brother to the mat and caved in his ribcage with a wicked kick (supposedly breaking a rib legit). Now, Hogan figured it out. He hoisted Earl high above his head, got a running head start, and proceeded to overshoot his target by a country mile, sending Earl SOARING into the aisleway over everyone’s head (including Andre, and he was a giant!). They were supposed to catch him, but hey, shit happens.

Backstage with Mean Gene, Hogan was a wreck. He was so distraught, he was literally in tears over this grave injustice that had just been committed. It’s too bad The Shield came 20 years too late. Maybe they could have helped prevent all of this. As Hogan whined and cried about plastic surgery, he talked about seeing both Hebners for the first time, exclaiming, “When I turned around, they were identical. IDENTICUUUUULLLL!!!!” Moments later, as they showed a replay in slow-mo of the finish, Hogan desperately tried pointing out to us all the hundred dollar bills falling out of the referee’s pocket. Okerlund didn’t have the heart to tell the big guy that, in fact, there were no hundred dollar bills. As hilarious as this all was, Hogan was a pathetic mess here. Between this and his temper tantrum at the 1992 Royal Rumble when he helped Flair eliminate Sid (who did nothing wrong!), I’m not sure how I was ever a fan of this man.

By the way, there’s a little “easter egg” of sorts to watch for on this show. Prior to his title defense, WWF shot to a pre-taped Hulk Hogan interview backstage. In it, he can be seen wearing what has since been dubbed as the “Hogan ‘87” belt. Yet moments later, when he emerges from the curtain, he’s wearing the Winged Eagle belt that would become synonymous with the company over the next decade. Not sure if the ’87 belt held out for more money before Hogan walked out or mouthed off to the wrong person, but it was never seen again.

A quarter century ago on this date, history was made. Hogan lost his smile. The plastic surgery was bought and paid for. And Andre won the tag team title. A memorable night, indeed.

Jim Ross Weighs In On Bruno Sammartino’s Induction Into The WWE Hall of Fame

1

As announced on Raw Monday, the longest-reigning WWE Champion of all time, Bruno Sammartino, will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame the night before WrestleMania 29 at Madison Square Garden. Jim Ross offered his thoughts via Jrsbarbq.com on the “Living Legend” taking his place in the Hall.

Ross wrote, “The Bruno Sammartino video package, as I tweeted earlier in the day @JRsBBQ, I expected to be heavy duty and it was. Bruno’s career IE body of work will never be replicated in today’s marketplace within the genre. An eight YEAR run ON TOP in the #1 territory in the world is unfathomable if one gives that accomplishment any serious, intelligent thought. Students of the game ‘get it’ while squeaky wheel, attention seeking, Keyboard Warriors simply want to be defiant while refusing to acknowledge the career of a man like Bruno. Instead of celebrating a legit legend getting a WWE HOF nod after years of waiting by his long suffering fans and who, just recently, overcame philosophical differences with WWE, many who follow me on Twitter used Bruno’s induction announcement as another vehicle to drive ad nauseam the Macho Man HOF questions of the day.

“Really?

“I realize that there is a generation gap as it relates to many fans between Bruno and Savage, even though their careers actually overlapped, but these are two separate entities with two, separate agendas. Older fans and fans especially those who had family growing up in the Northeast United States revere Bruno who was considered a “Sports God” to his fans. Bruno was just as big a celebrity as any professional athlete in the NE on any team during the Italian strongman’s heyday….and still is to an entire generation of fans.

“I can simply tell you that when I got in the business in 1974 that the goal of virtually every wrestler that I knew was to get booked in WWWF aka WWE and if said wrestler was a villain the ONLY goal was to get your ‘run’ with Bruno which guaranteed that one would earn big money. A few months run with Sammartino in WWWF would be more money than most wrestlers would make in a year of territory wrestling.

“I recall how happy General Scandar Akbar was to get the WWWF call and leave the Oklahoma territory on occasion to go to the WWWF TV’s and destroy some willing souls as Ak prepared for his title challenge against the Living Legend. Unfortunately, Bruno was severely injured against Stan Hansen and the Bruno vs. Akbar rivalry never happened.

“Cowboy Bill Watts career as a legit main eventer was validated by Watts tag teaming with Bruno in the WWWF and Watts subsequent turn on his partner which resulted in Cowboy Bill Watts headlining Madison Square Garden vs. Bruno in only Bill’s third year in the business. Bruno liked Bill and they sold out MSG three times versus each other in the 60’s which was unheard of at the time as usually a talent only got 1-2 shots vs Bruno in the Garden.

“It cannot be overstated how big it truly is for Bruno Sammartino to be inducted into the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame which makes this class, even if he was going in solo, the best WWE HOF class ever in my humble opinion and that includes my own class in 2007. I pray for good health so that I can join my Pittsburgh wife and attend the most special of nights, April 6, 2013 when the Steel City’s own Bruno Sammartino once again sells out MSG but this time, I’m assuming, he will go on last which is something that the main eventers never did back in the day at MSG.

“The potential projects that Bruno can be involved with in the future with WWE are virtually limitless and his mere presence adds massive credibility to what ever project is being marketed. I hope that I get to work with the Living Legend on something in the future. It would be a great honor, I assure you, for this fan who grew up not seeing Bruno wrestle but instead by reading the monthly, pro wrestling magazines which allowed my imagination to carry me from Westville, Oklahoma to far away arenas thanks to the photos that were utilized and the intriguing copy that accompanied the memorable photos. Bruno Sammartino was to pro wrestling what John Wayne was to western movies…the ultimate hero who always overcame the odds by doing things the old school way.”

Ross also offered his thoughts on Raw, including CM Punk claiming to be the rightful WWE Champion, Jack Swagger and the return of Mark Henry. The full post is available here.

NXT Star Close To Getting Called Up, Former TNA Star Rumored For WWE & More

25

– NXT Corey Graves is close to getting called up to the main roster. Graves’ gimmick is that he’s a cocky outcast who is a product of the underground music scene. He wrestled at this weekend’s WWE live events and was backstage at RAW.

– The “fans” who CM Punk spoke to at ringside during his promo on RAW were independent wrestlers “Adorable” Anthony Andrews and “Marvelous” Michael Stevens. They are local wrestlers work for RPW, AWN, and the Anarchy promotion.

– Now that the WWE vs. TNA lawsuit has been settled, a former TNA talent rumored to be headed to WWE is Amazing Red. The former X-Division Champion got a WWE tryout prior to WWE’s No Way Out 2012 pay-per-view, but the pending lawsuit kept WWE from signing him. The tryout reportedly went very well and Red has a few friends in WWE, including Matt Striker. He was recently pulled from TNA’s “One Night Only: X-Travaganza” PPV taping, which has added some momentum to this story.

Chris Jericho Talks About His WWE Return, Bret Hart’s Comments About Triple H & More

9

WWE Superstar Chris Jericho called in on his own to Busted Open with Dave Lagreca and Mike Riker to discuss Bret Hart’s comments on Triple H. You can hear Busted Open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Sirius 92, XM 208 and online on Sports Zone.

Jericho on Bret Hart’s comments on HHH: “It was funny because when I saw that comment that Bret had said, I was kind of surprised because I think that Triple H has had a lot of great matches, dozens of great matches. I could think of two or three that I was in with him myself, so, maybe, I don’t know why Bret would say that, maybe it’s still a little bit personal or some bad vibes or taste in his mouth from what happened years ago. But I’ll tell you face to face that Triple H has had many great matches and I always enjoyed watching him work, even up to the match he had with Lesnar. I don’t know if that was a great match, it was definitely a very good one, so I would definitely never ever bury Triple H’s wrestling talent for sure I think he’s one of the best we’ve ever seen.”

What benefit does it have for Bret Hart to make those comments? “He’s saying it just because, old, old, old wounds die hard, or whatever the cliché is. You know, I’m sure Bret has made his peace with Shawn over the Montreal Screw Job; maybe he still has some lingering issues with Triple H as part of that. I don’t know, cuz I think Bret is very much one of my favorites of all time, one of my top two or three as a matter of fact, but maybe there’s a little bit of bias in this or something like that for him to say that Triple H has had no great matches. Cuz I don’t think anybody could ever say that he’s had no great matches. You might say “well this guy’s a jerk” or “I don’t like him personally” or “backstage I don’t like him” or “politically I don’t like him”, but there’s one thing you can never doubt with Triple H and that’s his wrestling ability, especially as a main event performer, like you said earlier, in the early 2000’s as the top heel in the company, I think you could throw any baby face’s name out there and you could probably match up a quote unquote great match that he had with that person, for sure. Triple H may be a little bit underrated as far as the amount of flak that he takes over the years, but, as a performer, I’ll tell you straight up he was definitely one of the best, from that era and even up until last year. The match he had with Undertaker, the match he had with Undertaker the year before, both Wrestlemania matches, were both amazing matches. Maybe not the same levels as the ones Shawn had with him but definitely in the exact same ballpark. Triple H is just one of those guys, he’s got it, he always has had it, he’s a great ring general, he’s very smart in the psychology of putting together his matches, believable when he works, so definitely definitely definitely. Like I said, I could give you 3 matches that I had with him, personally that I thought were great. The Last Man Standing that we had in Dallas, the title match we had at State College where I won the title, and then the tag match with me and Benoit versus Triple H and Austin. All of them were what I would consider to be some of my best performances, some of my best matches that I ever had for sure.”

Outside your matches with him, what do you think was his best match ever? “Y2J – It’s hard to say cuz there’s just so many eras, like you said, I would have thought of the Three Stages of Hell with Austin, was a great one. I think he had a 60 minute Iron Man Match that’s forgotten against The Rock where Shawn was the referee, that was great. I think the 3-way with Benoit and Shawn at Wrestlemania, whatever it was, was amazing. And I think the ones he had with Undertaker, both of those were great. But that’s the thing, when you get a guy who’s had as many great matches as he has, it’s hard to just say here’s one or here’s two, you know. There’s just so many. There’s this one there’s that one there’s this one and that one, I mean the Batista Wrestlemania match was great as well. That’s what makes a great worker, not just a short burst, but longevity of a career, 10-15 years of having great matches with a whole variety of different opponents and whole variety of styles. You know, that’s what makes a great worker to me.”

On his Royal Rumble appearance: “Y2J – Well it’s funny because, 2 things about that was, one, I was so happy that it didn’t leak. Like I thought for sure, sooner or later it’s going to leak on a website or dirt sheet or somebody would hear something and it would get out. But nobody knew that I was there until the moment that music played. And I think that was such a cool vibe, that we could still surprise people, still surprise guys like you who have your finger on the pulse and have spies or contacts or sources. And that’s what wrestling is all about. It’s all about the surprise element that takes you back to when you were a kid. When I was a kid, we had no internet or no dirt sheets. All we knew, all I knew, was what was coming by promotions. And that’s how we’d have a surprise. I think of when Dave Hebners evil twin brother Earl Hebner and they screwed Hulk out of winning the title. If you would have heard earlier today that Earl Hebners brother Dave was in the building and they’re identical twins, it would have killed some of that magic. And that was cool for us to be able to do that at Royal Rumble and have a complete surprise, legitimate surprise. And then number two was, I didn’t even think about it until afterwards, that I was in there for so long, like 48 minutes, or whatever it was. And Vince even asked me after “how did you stay in such good shape? I was like. I don’t know, I’m not sure.”

Bruno Sammartino Explains Why He Finally Agreed To Join The WWE Hall of Fame

41

As announced on Monday, Bruno Sammartino will finally be entering the WWE Hall of Fame on April 6th from the site of his most memorable matches, Madison Square Garden. The story was broken by ESPN, which featured some interesting comments from Bruno about why he decided to bury that hatchet with WWE and accept the honor.

“Being inducted into the Hall of Fame at Madison Square Gardens is the biggest thing in my life,” Sammartino said in an exclusive interview with ESPN. “Anytime that people feel that you accomplished enough to enter into a Hall of Fame, of course this is a tremendous, tremendous thrill for me. I had a lot of my success due to appearing at the Garden. I wrestled there over 200 times, it’s where I won the title, and it’s where I picked up 630-plus pounds of Haystacks Calhoun.”

The article notes that despite Sammartino’s decades-long feud with Vince McMahon, it was Triple H who stepped in and finally got the deal done.

“In talking to Paul Levesque, I made it clear, I’ve had issues with WWE and wrestling in general, because there were other organizations,” Sammartino said. “I didn’t like the direction they had taken. It was bothersome to me. I’m an old-school guy. I spent 25 years in this business. But after talking to Paul, and him explaining to me the changes they’ve made in their program, and how they’ve hired a doctor like Dr. Maroon, who is a world-renowned neurosurgeon, who also operated on me, and now that he has been put in charge of the company’s wellness program and their drug testing, that impressed me. I know what kind of a man he is, and he is a giant in that field, so I take my hat off to WWE because they took such huge steps to make things better for the wrestlers themselves and making sure they are healthy to perform. That was very, very important.

“But as Paul explained to me, WWE made a lot of other changes. There’s no more profanity, there’s no vulgarity in the current product, and that stuff had bothered me as well. When Paul first spoke to me and told me all the changes, I started watching it again, and I was very convinced that they are doing amazing things. I see the wrestlers and all the changes they made. There’s no profanity, there’s no vulgarity, and it’s a family-friendly program. That’s what it used to be, and that’s a huge role in the whole factor.”

Sammartino will be joined by Mick Foley, Bob Backlund and Trish Stratus in what’s easily one of the strongest Hall of Fame classes ever.
