Konnan On Angle’s Claim That McMahon Sends Him Flowers

10

AAA matchmaker Konnan has launched his new weekly podcast, MLW’s Konnan Show presented by Masked Republic’s LuchaShop.com. A variety of topics were discussed this week and Konnan even had some surprise callers, including AAA star Teddy Hart. Konnan had previously appeared on MLW Radio and told a story about how Kurt Angle had claimed to him that Vince McMahon mails flowers to Angle every week with a note asking Angle to return to WWE. Kurt Angle recently responded on Twitter and accused Konnan of lying. Konnan had this to say about Angle’s twitter rant:

“All I can say is that it did happen. Obviously, when people are embarrassed or don’t remember, they’re going to refute it. If we can get him on the show one day, I’ll say it to him over the phone. There’s no problem. He did tell me that. He said, ‘Yeah man, Vince McMahon sends me flowers every week hoping for me to come back.’ I was just thinking to myself, yeah right.”

You can listen to MLW’s Konnan Show for FREE at MLW.com, on iTunes (search: KONNAN SHOW), and syndicated via Stitcher.com. Other topics include Konnan’s thoughts on the fake Konnan Twitter account, Andre the Giant and Yokozuna wrestling in Mexico, what wrestling companies can learn from successful companies like Nike and more.

PPV Buyrate Data Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber & WM28

4

As part of WWE’s First Quarter 2012 earnings report announced on Thrusday, the company released pay-per-view buyrate information for this year’s Royal Rumble and Elimination chamber events.

The Royal Rumble drew 443,000 buys, down from 446,000 buys in 2011, and 462,000 buys in 2010.

Elimination Chamber did 178,000 buys, down from 199,000 buys in 2011 and 285,000 buys in 2010.

Even though the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber both did fewer buys in 2012 than they did in 2011, revenue was essentially the same due to more viewers ordering the high-definition feeds of the events, which are more expensive and made up the lost revenue.

As for WrestleMania 28’s buyrate, the official numbers will not be reported until WWE announces its Second Quarter 2012 results in a few months, but WWE CEO Vince McMahon did say that the buyrate is expected to be “nearly 1.3 million pay-per-view buys globally,” indicating the final number might be less than the 1.3 million estimate WWE previously touted.

WWE Reports First Quarter 2012 Financial Results

8

WWE announces better-than-expected financial results for the first quarter of 2012 – sending WWE stock soaring 10% on Thursday morning, up from its 52-week low earlier in the week.  Profitability came in well-above analysts’s expectations, increasing 17 percent to $54.7 million. WWE explained the increase in the financial report released today:

“Reduced losses from our movie business, improved sell-through rates in home video, and incremental rights fees for online programming content contributed to the expansion in profit and overall profitability.”

“Gross contribution margins increased to 44 percent from 39 percent in the prior year quarter. Excluding the impact of film impairments, Adjusted Profit contribution increased 12 percent to $55.5 million and Adjusted Profit contribution margin increased to 45 percent from 41 percent in the prior year quarter.”

Here’s the press release containing the financial data from Marketwatch.com.

WWE(R) Reports 2012 First Quarter Results

STAMFORD, Conn., May 03, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — WWEtoday announced financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 2012. Revenues totaled $123.1 million as compared to $119.9 million in the prior year quarter. Operating income was $16.0 million as compared to $13.2 million in the prior year quarter. Net income was $15.3 million, or $0.20 per share, as compared to $8.6 million, or $0.11 per share, in the prior year quarter. There were several items that impacted comparability on a year-over-year basis, including expenses incurred in conjunction with our potential network, recognition of previously unrecognized tax benefits and film impairments. Excluding the impact of these items, Adjusted Operating income in the current quarter was $18.9 million and Adjusted Net income was $13.1 million, or $0.18 per share. In the prior year quarter, Adjusted Operating income was $16.0 million and Adjusted Net income was $10.3 million, or $0.14 per share.

“In the first quarter, EBITDA grew 19%, reflecting increased profits across all our businesses. Our results were highlighted by the strong performance of our live events as we entered a new market in the Middle East. We are very pleased that our positive first quarter execution continued in April with the successful staging of WrestleMania, which is expected to deliver nearly 1.3 million pay-per-view buys globally,” stated Vince McMahon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Through the first quarter, we made important progress on our key strategic initiatives, developing our foundation for creating and distributing new content, and building on our tremendous brand strength, especially in social media. Looking ahead, we are confident that we will leverage the broad appeal of our content to transform our business and drive long-term earnings growth.”

Comparability of Results

Our current year quarter results included a $0.8 million film impairment charge, related to our film, Bending the Rules, $2.1 million in network related operating expenses and a $4.1 million benefit due to previously unrecognized tax benefits. Prior year quarter results included impairment charges of $2.8 million, related to our film 12 Rounds, and a $0.1 million tax benefit. In order to facilitate an analysis of our financial results on a more comparable basis, where noted, we have adjusted our results to exclude these items from our first quarter of 2012 results. (See Schedules of Adjustments in Supplemental Information).

First Quarter Results by Region and Business Segment

Revenues from North America increased 4%, led by the performance of our Live and Televised Entertainment segment. Revenues from outside North America were essentially unchanged from the prior year quarter. There was no significant impact from changes in foreign exchange rates in the current year quarter.

Live and Televised Entertainment

Revenues from our Live and Televised Entertainment businesses increased 8% to $75.7 million as compared to $70.4 million in the prior year quarter. The increase was primarily due to the performance of our live events and additional television rights fees, as described below.

— Live Event revenues increased 13% to $22.2 million from $19.6 million in the prior year quarter primarily due to the timing of our Fan Axxess events and the successful performance of our inaugural tour in Abu Dhabi. Fan Axxess was held in conjunction with WrestleMania XXVIII but occurred within our first quarter. — There were 75 total events during the current quarter as compared to 77 events in the prior year quarter, with the variance primarily due to touring logistics. There were six international events performed in the current quarter as compared to four in the prior year quarter.

— North American events generated $18.9 million of revenues from 69 events as compared to $17.4 million from 73 events in the prior year quarter, reflecting the timing of Fan Axxess, which added $1.4 million in incremental revenue to the quarter with $1.6 million in the current year quarter. A 6% increase in average ticket prices to $38.50 for our North American events was offset by the impact of four fewer events in the quarter and a 3% decline in average attendance to 6,200.

— International events generated approximately $3.3 million of revenues from six events as compared to $2.2 million from four events in the prior year quarter. The growth was led by the impact of our strong tour in Abu Dhabi, which attracted a total of more than 15,000 fans at three events with an average price of $147 per ticket. Accordingly, average ticket prices at our international events increased 157% to $125.60 as compared to $48.88 in the prior year quarter. Average attendance at our international events, however, fell 60% to 3,400 reflecting the performance of our tour in Central America, which was staged in more economically challenged areas of that region than in the prior year quarter. For these events, our International revenue included the effect of minimum guarantees, which we negotiate to protect our interests when traveling to territories with higher economic risks. These guarantees partially offset the impact of lower average attendance.

— Pay-Per-View revenues were $13.5 million in both the current and prior year quarter, as a 3% increase in the average revenue per buy was offset by a comparable decline in current year buys. The increase in average revenue per buy was attributable to higher retail prices charged for viewing our events in high definition. The decline in buys for the two events in the quarter was driven by an 8% decline in international buys as domestic buys remain essentially unchanged.

Detailed PPV Buyrate Data Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber & WrestleMania

— Television Rights Fees revenues were $32.5 million as compared to $31.6 million in the prior year quarter. The rise was primarily due to additional rights fees and contractual increases from our existing programs, partially offset by the absence of rights fees for our WWE Superstars program.

— Venue Merchandise revenues were $5.1 million as compared to $4.5 million in the prior year quarter, as the favorable impact associated with the timing of our Fan Axxess events was partially offset by a 13% decrease in total domestic attendance in the current year quarter.

— WWE Classics on Demand(TM) revenues were $1.0 million as compared to $1.1 million in the prior year quarter.

Consumer Products

Revenues from our Consumer Products businesses increased 2%, to $35.5 million from $34.8 million in the prior year quarter, primarily due to increased revenue in our Home Video business, partially offset by a decline in our Magazine Publishing business.

— Home Video net revenues were $9.2 million as compared to $8.1 million in the prior year quarter, representing a 14% increase that was primarily due to higher than anticipated sell-through rates for releases in prior periods. The resulting increase in sales was partially offset by a 27% decline in average price and a 5% decrease in units shipped, where these factors stemmed from ongoing discounts and promotional activity primarily related to our catalog titles. Additionally, there was one fewer title released in the current year quarter.

— Licensing revenues were $24.2 million as compared to $23.9 million in the prior year quarter, as the recognition of minimum guarantees was offset by a decline in royalties earned from several product categories, including video games and toys. The decline in these categories was primarily due to difficult trends in our international markets. Overall revenue from the sale of video games declined 11%, or $1.5 million, while revenue from the sale of toys declined 6% or $0.4 million. Shipments of our franchise video game, WWE ’12, declined 25% to 2.0 million units, driven by a reduction in the number of platforms supported by the current release and reflecting broader industry challenges.

— Magazine Publishing net revenues were $1.4 million as compared to $2.2 million in the prior year quarter, reflecting lower newsstand sales in the current quarter.

Digital Media

Revenues from our Digital Media related businesses were $7.1 million as compared to $6.1 million in the prior year quarter, representing a 16% increase.

— WWE.com revenues increased to $3.9 million as compared to $2.7 million in the prior year quarter, primarily due to increased rights fees and higher online advertising sales. The increase in rights fees was driven by a new programming agreement, which licenses original, short-form content to YouTube.

— WWEShop revenues of $3.2 million were essentially unchanged from the prior year quarter as an 18% increase in the average revenue per order to $48.04 was offset by a 20% decrease in the sales volume to approximately 66,000 orders. Discounted sales and promotional activity accounted for the relatively lower price and higher sales volume in the prior year quarter.

WWE Studios

During the quarter, WWE Studios recognized revenue of $4.8 million as compared to $8.6 million in the prior year, reflecting the relative performance and timing of releases from our movie portfolio. In the prior year quarter, we released The Chaperone. In the current quarter, we released Bending the Rules, which has generated lower than anticipated home video receipts in its initial weeks of release. As a result, we revised our long-term ultimate projections for this film and recorded an impairment charge of $0.8 million contributing to an overall WWE Studios loss of $1.0 million in the current year quarter. This result compared to a loss of $3.6 million in the prior year quarter driven by the $2.8 million impairment for our film 12 Rounds.

Profit Contribution (Net revenues less cost of revenues)

Profit contribution increased 17% to $54.7 million reflecting better results across all of our businesses. Reduced losses from our movie business, improved sell-through rates in home video, and incremental rights fees for our online programming content contributed to the expansion in profit and overall profitability. Gross contribution margins increased to 44% from 39% in the prior year quarter. Excluding the impact of film impairments, Adjusted Profit contribution increased 12% to $55.5 million and Adjusted Profit contribution margin increased to 45% from 41% in the prior year quarter.

Selling, general and administrative expenses

SG&A expenses were $34.7 million for the current quarter as compared to $29.9 million in the prior year quarter reflecting increased staffing costs, a $1.4 million rise in bad debt expense and to a lesser extent an increase in legal and professional fees. The increase in staffing costs was incurred primarily to support our content and distribution initiatives. Total network-related costs reached approximately $2.1 million in the current year quarter. Excluding these network expenses, adjusted SG&A expenses increased 9% to $32.6 million from the prior year quarter.

Depreciation and amortization

Depreciation and amortization expense was $4.0 million for the current quarter as compared to $3.6 million in the prior year quarter.

EBITDA

EBITDA increased 19% to $20.0 million from $16.8 million in the prior year quarter. The increase was primarily due to the expansion in profit contribution across our businesses, partially offset by the increase in SG&A expenses as described above. Excluding the impact of network related expenses and film impairments in both the current and prior year quarter, Adjusted EBITDA increased 17% to $22.9 million as compared to $19.6 million in the prior year quarter.

Investment, Interest and Other Income

Investment income of $0.5 million was unchanged from the prior year quarter. Other income and expense was essentially flat to the prior year quarter as benefits from changes in certain state taxes were offset by interest expense related to our revolving credit facility.

Effective tax rate

In the current year quarter, the effective tax rate was 7% as compared to 37% in the prior year quarter. The decrease in tax rate from our anticipated rate of 35% was primarily due to the recognition of a $4.1 million benefit relating to previously unrecognized tax benefits. The prior year rate was also impacted by a $0.1 million unrecognized tax benefit.

Cash Flows

Net cash provided by operating activities was $27.2 million for the three months ended March 31, 2012 as compared to $28.9 million in the prior year quarter. Improved current year operating performance was offset by an increase in television production spending and other changes in working capital.

Purchases of property and equipment increased $5.6 million from the prior year quarter, primarily due to a $6.4 million investment in assets to support our efforts to create and distribute new content, including through a potential network. Partially offsetting the increase was a $1.6 million purchase of music rights in the prior year quarter.

Concern Over Cena’s Bleeding, New NXT Talent, Bloopers Video

33

– There were reportedly several top members of WWE management that were concerned about how much John Cena bled at Extreme Rules. Cena was busted open ‘the hard way’ in the opening minutes of the match after a brutal elbow to the head from Brock Lesnar that almost ended the match.

– William Regal announced on this week’s NXT that he has scouted new wrestlers that will soon be appearing on the show. He did not reveal the identities of the new talent, but did promise we’ll see several NXT debuts in the coming weeks.

– WWE has posted a new video looking at some of the company’s funniest bloopers. The video, which is inspired by Lilian Garcia’s recent fall on the entrance ramp, features clips of the Shockmaster, Matt Hardy falling down, “Mean” Gene Okerlund cursing on live television and more.

Warrior Talks About His Unique Relationship With Vince McMahon

27

The Ultimate Warrior recently appeared on MLW Radio, the official podcast of Major League Wrestling. You can listen to the interview at MLW.com. Here’s a quote of what Warrior said about his relationship with Vince McMahon back in the early 1990’s:

“For me it was really unique, maybe more unique than for anybody else. Whenever I would go to Stamford, I didn’t stay at a hotel. I just went straight out to Vince’s house, Vince and Linda’s home. Shane was there at the time. He was in high school. I had a big brother, little brother relationship with him. That’s the way that I would describe it. I was very close to all of them.

“I remember taking long walks on the property out there with Vince. I remember talking about that even beyond the Ultimate Warrior’s time as the champion or the thing of today that years down the road that he would still be Ultimate Warrior as a persona and me as a person would still be a part of this family. It was very close and very intimate. I don’t think that it’s like that at all today and I don’t remember anybody else being given that courtesy or allowed that openness to their family as I was back then.”

Warrior also spoke about his upcoming reality show, CM Punk and more.

In what is unlikely to be a coincidence, WWE.com now has a feature looking at the Ultimate Warrior’s most “insane” interviews.

Charlie Haas Talks About The Sad State Of WWE’s Tag Division

21

During a recent interview with Mike Buda of SportstownChicago.com, former WWE superstar Charlie Haas sounded off on the sad state of WWE’s tag team division:

“If you look at their tag team division, it sucks. The wrestlers don’t suck, the division sucks. Creative doesn’t know it; I don’t know if it’s creative or the political bullshit Vince McMahon or whoever that don’t like tag team wrestling. They don’t push it and they don’t showcase it like they used to. At one time, it was phenomenal when you had Edge and Christian, the Dudleys, the Hardys and the New Age Outlaws. That was great, but now they just throw two guys together and they put a couple of shitty belts on them that look terrible. Those belts look like pennies.”

It’s one thing to complain – but Haas actually has a reasonable solution for how to fix the fledgling division:

“You’ve got one of the greatest minds in the business, who was part of one of the greatest tag teams and that’s Arn Anderson. I would go back to the agents and say ‘Arn, you’re in charge of the tag team division. Come up with some tag teams, create tag teams and create story lines.’ Let the agents that have been in the ring and have done their jobs, let them write the business.”

WWE Takes A Shot At Bischoff, Wade Barrett In WWE Film

18

— In a new article on the WWE website looking at the upcoming cruiserweights show on the WWE Network, WWE takes a somewhat random jab at former employee, Eric Bischoff:

“Through the crumbling of WCW and his own shameless self-promotion, Bischoff has become somewhat of a sports-entertainment punchline.”

– Wade Barrett will have a supporting role in the WWE Studios project Dead Man Down starring Colin Ferrell, Noomi Rapace and Terrance Howard.

– Husky Harris, last seen on WWE TV has a member of the Nexus, is being advertised for Friday’s RAW house show in Huntsville, Alabama. Harris had a new gimmick in WWE developmental and is listed as taking on Alex Riley on the card. The top matches set for the show are C.M. Punk vs. Mark Henry and John Cena vs. Lord Tensai.

New Details On Rey Mysterio’s Wellness Violation

12

As previously reported, Rey Mysterio tested positive for amphetamines back on February 13th when WWE RAW was in San Diego,  but his 60-day suspension was not announced until April 26th. Mysterio was in disbelief when he was informed of the Wellness Violation and was told to submit all the medications and supplements he was taking at the time for evaluation.

One of the theories going around is that one of the weight-loss dietary supplements Mysterio was taking to get back into ring shape might have contained traces of amphetamines.

Shortly after the drug test, there was talk within WWE of frustration with him to the point it was said he would not be getting any kind of push upon returning. Writers were told in early March not to waste time coming up with angles or storylines for his return but no reasons were given. A very small circle of people in the company would have known about the failure from February 13th until April 26th as doctors evaluated the violation.

Mysterio, who is currently signed to a long-term contract with WWE, won’t be eligible to return until June 25th. Since he was not working on the road, the two month suspension would likely cost him around $166,667 in salary. He also missed another lucrative WrestleMania payday.

Sin Cara Ready For His Return, More On Heyman-WWE

24

— As previously reported, Paul Heyman will be heading to WWE headquarters soon to work on the new CM Punk DVD. Last year, Heyman was interviewed for Steve Austin’s most recent DVD set. Both Steve Austin and CM Punk personally requested that Heyman be involved in their projects.

— Sin Cara will be returning to action on WWE’s upcoming tour of Mexico. An announcement was made on on the April 30th episode of RAW that aired in Mexico. During a recent media interview promoting his return, Sin Cara said he expects things to go a lot better for him this time around.

Sin Cara specifically mentioned that he’s used to working the “right side” of the body (as they do in Mexico, but not in WWE) – and he’s now much more comfortable working the WWE style.

Edge’s Status With WWE, Cole’s Role As A Heel Announcer

39

— Edge’s WWE contract expired on April 30th and he has not signed a new deal with the company. When he made a surprise appearance on RAW several weeks ago and gave John Cena a pep talk, he was there to meet with WWE officials, but nothing came of it.

He was forced to pull out of a scheduled appearance for Billy Corgan’s Resistance Pro Wrestling show on 5/11 because of his filming schedule for Syfy’s “Haven” show, but he did promise to appear at a future RPW show.

— Michael Cole’s heel announcer gimmick was supposed to officially end at WrestleMania 28. His new role is to be an “edgy” character who still respects John Laurinaitis, one of WWE’s top heels. A recent sign of Cole retreating from being an annoying heel and shifting to a more neutral role was that he was sympathetic towards John Cena during his feud with Brock Lesnar.

WWE’s Board Of Directors Considering Legal Action Against Lesnar

24

The WWE website has a new storyline-driven article up that says the Board of Directors may take action against Brock Lesnar for his attack on Triple H this past Monday. However – the ‘contract demands’ made by Lesnar on the 4/23 episode of RAW and agreed to by John Laurinaitis protect Lesnar from liability.

“Adding one further wrinkle is the revised contract that Laurinaitis agreed to during the April 23 edition of Raw. Among the new terms approved by the GM was a clause that waived any future fines or disciplinary actions against Lesnar.

Triple H has already dismissed those additional contract perks as null and void, but could Lesnar’s camp pursue legal action in the event that the Board of Directors or Triple H comes down on Lesnar?”

The article also mentions that the Board of Directors is considering taking action against Jon Laurinaitis for his role in the whole situation.

Paul Heyman Comments On Extreme Reunion & Punk DVD

12

Paul Heyman issued the following statement regarding last weekend’s Extreme Reunion event promoted by Shane Douglas:

“I’ve had a ton of people ask me about #ExtremeReunion… and I haven’t said a word about it. Not a word in advance. And certainly nothing to say about it now. I didn’t comment on TNA’s Hardcore Justice in advance, nor after the show, either. Nothing to say about that, either. I chose not to participate in either show, or any other attempt to re-live #ECW, so I don’t feel it would be right 4 me to comment on it.”

“If you’re involved, speak your mind. If you take a pass on something, STFU. Just another voice bitching with the rest. #NotMyStyle I haven’t done any conventions. No shoot tapes. No paid autograph signings. Nothing wrong with ’em. Just #NotMyStyle So … I have kept my mouth shut about #ExtremeReunion. I wasn’t there, so who am I to say anything?”

Heyman also commented news of him working with WWE on the upcoming CM Punk DVD project:

“I was interviewed for the Austin DVD. I’m honored 2b interviewed for the @CMpunk DVD as well”

Cody Rhodes Interview: Learning From Cena, Being Dusty’s Son

58

WWE Intercontinental champion Cody Rhodes recently spoke with the Toledo Free Press and spoke about a number of topics, including what it was like growing up the son of Dusty Rhodes, starting off his career as a referee and what he’s learned from John Cena. Here are some highlights of what Cody said about:

Growing Up The Son of Dusty Rhodes:

“For me, I didn’t really pick up on the fact that he was, like, Dusty Rhodes, until about the time that I was in middle school. For me, he was always just dad. He was retired, not really as heavily involved. We got outside of the suburbs a little bit, and through other friends of mine’s parents I figured out how much that he’d done in the wrestling industry. I’d been to a lot of shows where he was a prominent figure, but I didn’t know how much he had done, especially in the late ’80s.

Being a Wrestling Fan As A Kid:

“I was a fan, but I don’t think I knew how much of a fan I was.”

His Decision to Become a Wrestler When he was a Teen:

“It was hard for my mother to take, because I never explored the options of doing anything else. It was just like it was set in stone. I think that’s what made it worse for even her — she couldn’t even say anything to change my mind.”

Starting out as a Referee in Turnbuckle Championship Wrestling:

“For me, it was just as exciting as being the one wrestling. The referee has a lot of control that I don’t think a lot of people realize in the ring. And I got the same rush performing as I did as a referee, especially as a teen.”

Getting Experience At Ohio Valley Wrestling:

“I also got a very firm grasp on how big of a fan I was. I was told when I was going to Louisville that you’re gonna eat, sleep and breathe wrestling. And I thought I’d have some outside interests. And from the time I entered, I never had any outside interests. When we weren’t at [training], we were at somebody’s apartment, watching WWE 24/7. And when we weren’t there, we were eating, and I was learning about diet and training — that was something I never had any access to. My dad was not a body guy. And in this day and age, when a company has evolved to where a lot of the specimens you see on TV are carved from stone, that was all new to me.”

Learning from John Cena:

“I spent a year driving Cena around when I was on the Raw brand. The goal was to learn a lot about him, what he does in the ring, how he has gotten where he has gotten, but also to learn a lot about merchandising and marketing, pretty much all the things he does. And I’d say I learned a great deal on what it takes outside of the ring. He’s noted as being one of the most hard-working people in entertainment, and he is. If you want his job, you have to work as hard as he does. And it is much easier said than done.”

The Rock Turns 40, Cena’s Status For Weekend House Shows

18

– John Cena is still advertised for this weekend’s RAW brand live events, despite his speech after Extreme Rules where he told fans he’ll be taking time off.

Cena is scheduled to face Mark Henry this weekend. The main events for the RAW house shows will see WWE Champion CM Punk defending against Chris Jericho.

– Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson turns 40 years old today. He was born on May 2nd, 1972. Happy birthday to The Rock!
