The segment concluded with Kelly explaining her how ring name was created.

— The legendary career of WWE Hall of Famer “Rowdy” Roddy Piper is highlighted on the latest episode of WWE Vintage Collection. The episode featured clips from the following matches and segments:

Abyss Discusses Character, Says He’s Open To Losing Mask

11

Chris Park, who portrays Abyss for TNA Wrestling, says he is always looking for ways to keep his character fresh and exciting. However, he acknowledges that it can be difficult since Abyss has regularly featured throughout the organization’s history, and has just about done it all.

“The character has got a lot of different directions that it can still go down,” he tells SLAM! Wrestling. “There are always new dragons to slay. There’s a number of fresh programs (possible) with some great up-and-coming talent, guys like Gunner and Crimson. Guys like Ken Anderson that I haven’t worked a lot with, or Bully Ray who I’ve never really worked with. Personally, I’m as hungry now as I was nine years ago when I first started full-time with TNA. I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished, like winning all four major titles, and being a main event heavyweight contender for so many years. I’ve worked hard, and it’s paid off. But I think there’s till so much more that I can do.”

Park says he’s open to Abyss losing his trademark mask, a direction he would not have been comfortable with years ago.

“Five or six years ago, I would have been more resistant to it,” he said about the idea. “But now I’d be open to it. The character has had a great run — both TNA and I have gotten an awful lot out of it. Losing (the mask) would let me create a new presentation of the Abyss character, give me an opportunity to do different things that I haven’t done over the years, put a little more of Chris Park in it.”

Abyss, a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, also discusses TNA’s expansion efforts, Bruce Pritchard taking over the company’s creative rein, his versatility and more. The full interview can be accessed here.

David Hart Smith Says WWE Didn’t Give Him A Fair Chance

19

Live Audio Wrestling recently welcomed former WWE talent Harry Smith (a/k/a David Hart Smith) to discuss a variety of topics. The full interview can be heard accessed here. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

How long he’s been training MMA and who he is working with: “I’ve had a lot of interest in mixed martial arts actually since before I got signed with WWE. I was training a little bit in jiu jistu, I was an amateur wrestler a little bit before. I ended up getting into contact with Josh Barnett, ‘cause we were both wrestling in New Japan Pro Wrestling at the same time, just different tours. The first time I met Josh, I went down to an independent show for Pinnacle Wrestling in Seattle, Washington, and I saw Josh there. He looked at me, and we talked a bit, and he goes “So, when are you gonna get into fighting?” I kinda chuckled, I didn’t really think much of it at the time, but I did have some interest in it. He invited me to come down and train with him at the next show up in Seattle, so I did grapple with Josh, and I was just amazed. My eyes were sort of totally opened up to this whole other level of grappling that was like catch wrestling. Crossfaces, leg locks, slams, suplexes, different unique throws. From that point on, I had started watching a lot of Erik Paulson DVDs, and some other catch wrestling stuff, and trained in jiu jitsu as well. I came back and trained with Josh a year later or so, and Billy Robinson happened to come up to California for a seminar. I got to meet him, we trained a little bit. At that time, I had been signed with WWE, so I was still training at it a lot, and the more and more I trained at it, the more and more interested I got with it. I think it’s sort of in my blood, with my grandfather being Stu (Hart) and his legendary reputation of catch wrestling.

“It’s not like as if I just left WWE and it’s like, “Okay, now I wanna become a mixed martial artist to make money. I really do love mixed martial arts, and I think me training with Billy, and training at it while I was employed with WWE goes to show that I was always sort of interested in it. Since I left WWE, I’ve been training at it full time, trying to get the striking down, putting everything together, finding a good fighting weight for myself. We’ve toyed around with a few things, maybe even 205, not exactly sure, that might be too light. We’re sort of experimenting a bit with weight, and just putting it all together. Not exactly sure when there will be a fight. More training with Josh, and cage time, and we’ll see.”

Teddy Hart and some of his plans to train animals for future shows: “I just heard from hearsay about some of the ideas, like I think cats are supposed to bring weapons to the ring and stuff like that. I mean, if he can train the cats to wrestle…actually, he should train the cats how to shoot and grapple and stuff. Put some gi’s on the cats and let them grapple. He might just be saying some of that stuff to generate interest with the audience and stuff like that, to see if he would really do that. He hasn’t actually explained any of that sort of stuff to me. Some of his ideas are very good, with MatRats, they had the pizza pie plate at the top of the ring post, which I guess is about six to eight inches higher than the top turnbuckle and further out, so two people can both stand on the top and do a suplex off there, or a hurricanrana. It was kind of a nice spectacle for the fans. So, you know, some of the ideas are good. The cat stuff might be a little bit out there, but hey man if he can train those cats to do it, all the power to him. I wanna see it, too.”

WWE not giving him a fair chance: “The big complaint that I had with WWE was just that they never gave me a fair chance, ever. We had a good deal with the tag team title run and everything, but guys like Drew McIntyre and Sheamus, they’re obviously very good talents and big guys and everything, but if they had given me the rocket like they had given those two guys, I’m sure that with my family’s lineage and going over to Canada and the UK, they could have done some really good business. For whatever reason, they didn’t. I’m not gonna point any fingers at anybody, but I think that there’s people up there that probably didn’t like my family, or maybe my Dad ribbed too many of the guys that are up top now. That’s basically the way that it happened, and I’m glad to be gone really. I don’t want to be wasting my time at a place that doesn’t appreciate me, or doesn’t want to do anything with me. There were other interests that I had, and so when John (Laurinaitis) called and gave me the release, I was relieved. We had a good talk, and he said that the doors are open to come back.”

Mick Foley Talks About His Return, Who He Wants To Wrestle

8

Mick Foley appeared on Wrestling Voice Radio this week and spoke about returning to WWE last week at a live event from Dublin, Ireland.

When asked about why Foley chose an overseas house show for his big return, Foley said:

“The basic answer is because I just happened to be flying into Dublin the day they were there and my hotel was literally across the street. I called and asked if I could come hang out and it was a lot of fun.”

Foley was originally advertised November 14th RAW Supershow from Boston featuring The Rock’s return, but says he wasn’t surprised when WWE scrapped the idea and decided to keep the attention on The Rock that night.

Foley also said he probably has one big match left in him and named The Miz as the person he’d want to wrestle against.

Dixie Carter Talks Impact Going Live & Touring, Heat, X-Division

24

TNA President Dixie Carter answered fan questions about the following topics on the TNA website:

Impact’s name change: “The show has always been called Impact. But as we grew the TNA corporate brand beyond Impact, we felt it was important (and the time) to let Impact stand on its own. It’s still under the TNA banner, it’s still the TNA World Heavyweight Title, but the show name is Impact Wrestling.”

Taking Impact live: “I would love Impact to be live each week, but it’s a matter of economics. As far as wrestling news sites are concerned, if you want to be surprised then people should not read them. If people choose to, they certainly shouldn’t judge anything based upon one person’s opinion, good or bad. The few times I have seen a spoiler, they always tell a limited, one-dimensional side of a story, and usually a very biased one at that.”

Letting the younger talent do media work: “We work very hard to get as many of the younger talent doing media as possible. If I had to guess, Hulk Hogan has done tens of thousands of interviews and of course, everyone in the media always wants to talk to him. It is a top priority to expose the younger talent in mainstream media and in outside film/tv projects. The more they do, the bigger their profile.”

Taking Impact on the road: “It is our top priority to take the show on the road on a permanent basis. Hopefully we will announce more live event Impact taping dates soon.”

The six-sided ring: “I liked us using the 6-sided ring for our X Division Pay-Per-View, Destination X, this year. We should do that every year, but at this time, there are no plans to bring it back as our permanent ring.”

Dealing with heat: “I think you meant haters. If so, you grow tough skin and know you will never please everyone all the time. You work to please the most people as much of the time as you can.”

The X-Division: “I am a huge X Division fan. In the beginning, we had great talent representing that division, but those top guys have moved on to other opportunities on the roster. Today, we have the best crop of new and upcoming X Division stars and we are going to give them time on the show each week.”

Having a slogan of ‘Wrestling Matters’ yet only having seven minutes of wrestling on a recent show:

The direction of TNA: “I’ve never felt better about every aspect of the company. I think Impact Wrestling is better than it has ever been. So many of the younger talent have stepped up and are earning the spotlight. We are having tremendous international success, and are growing the corporation in many new areas, which are critical to our overall growth. I’m very excited about the upcoming year.”

MAILBAG: Should Mick Foley Challenge Undertaker At WM28?

23

SEScoops Mailbag for November 4th

(please submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: I’ve been curious over the years what happened to The Patriot (Del Wilkes), and what caused him to leave WWE in 1997? He was basically a lower mid-card talent in WCW in the early ’90’s, then was pushed right into the main event scene in WWE on RAW with Bret Hart and the Hart Foundation. Bret Hart wrestled The Patriot at Ground Zero in September 1997 for the WWE Championship, and then in a tag match at Bad Blood in October. After that, he was rarely seen. Did he only sign a short term contract with WWE at the time? Did he have some sort of dispute with anyone causing his departure? – Vinny in Connecticut

A: It is rather amazing that Wilkes started with the company in July and was headlining for the title two months later. After Badd Blood, he was scheduled to be part of Team USA in a Survivor Series elimination match, but suffered a torn triceps and was unable to compete. WWE released him a few months later. No animosity or angst between the two sides that I’m aware of, just a bad injury and they lost interest in him.

Q: We all know that Jim Ross gets no respect from Vince McMahon. Even though J.R. has proven to be a company man and is known as THE Best Announcer in wrestling, he is constantly humiliated and disrespected by Vince. What did J.R. do to deserve this kind of treatment? Or is it just Vince being a bully? – Adrian Ramlochan, Trinidad, West Indies

A: Vince McMahon is a man child. That is why he behaves the way he does. The best way to deal with someone like that is by standing up to them, but I don’t know that Ross has ever done that. At the end of the day, he still makes VERY good money and is working less, plus WWEShop is now the sole distributor of JR’s BBQ products, so I wouldn’t go crying for the man. But simply as a matter of respect, I find it repulsive.

Q: With Mick Foley returning to WWE, what would you think about Mankind vs. Undertaker at WrestleMania? No one has a win/loss record against Taker like Mankind did. WWE could bill him as possibly the only man that could end the streak. – Stephen D.

A: When was the last time Mick Foley even won a match? Foley poses less than a zero percent threat to Undertaker’s streak. He’s more famous for putting other people over than himself. For nostalgia, it might be nice to see him and Taker in the ring together, but they’re both so old and broken down at this point, I just don’t see the value. On your point of his win/loss record against the dead man, is it REALLY all that impressive? If we’re just talking PPV battles, I’m pretty sure Foley only took their first two matches back in 1996 (KOTR and Summerslam), both of which were not 100% clean wins. I’d hardly call that dominant.

Q: I know wrestling is staged, but what finishing move, excluding the Tombstone, do you think would cause the most damage and why? – Threen

A: This is an impossible question to answer. I suppose being on the receiving end of CM Punk’s GTS or being Pedigreed by Triple H on concrete could do a great deal of damage, but why not John Cena’s Attitude Adjustment? If he dumped you off the roof of a 20-story building with it, I don’t think you would be getting up. Everything is relative, you see. In terms of damaging one’s pride, I’ll go with the People’s Elbow. At least with Santino’s Cobra, you really could put somebody’s eye out with that move.

Q: This past summer, WWE’s writers and creative staff seemingly had a renaissance moment with the CM PUNK/VINCE/HHH feud, featuring some of the best writing, promos and plot twists the product has had since the height of the “Attitude Era”. So what the hell happened? Why does it seem like we are back to the stale matches, the typical Face/Heel feuds and the stagnant “I’m gonna beat you up” promos? Is there any hope that we will get back to the pre-Summer Slam style writing any time soon? – Seth, Parts Unknown

A: Hindsight is 20/20 and I think it’s safe to say that WWE got lucky. It was never a matter of great writing or plot twists. Punk’s contract was legitimately coming to an end and he was going to leave when they decided to take a real-life situation and let it play itself out on TV until Punk signed a new deal. You’ll notice that once Punk signed his new deal and won the title, we had the great promo at Comic-Con in San Diego and then things went to shit when they brought him back the following week. What great writing did I miss here? Nothing is going to change because nothing ever really changed in the first place.

Q: It appears that WWE is putting all cards on the table and taking a huge gamble with this new WWE Network. Do you think this could be another failure like the XFL or do you think this is a smart way to grow a company and industry that has remained in stagnant water for the last 10 years? If it fails, do you think WWE could be in serious financial trouble? – Glenn Danford

A: Let’s put it this way. If this network is a flop, with the millions that WWE is prepared to pour into it, it could jeopardize the future of the company. I’m not saying they would die within a year or anything, but it would deal a very serious blow to their health. If they’re going to do this, it HAS to be a success. Cable clearances are going to be their biggest obstacle.

Q: Old timers discuss the importance of the territories back in the day when numerous “entertainers” could achieve main event exposure, so when wrestlers joined another territory, they were already developed into a main event talent. I would assume it is not a coincidence that a decade after WWE bought and folded WCW and ECW that there is a real lack of main event talent. Does WWE need TNA and Ring of Honor? Do they need a strong number two to help develop talent? – Cyrus

A: Absolutely, they need a stronger number two, three and four. WWE has done a horrendous job of churning out new talent in recent years, especially talent up to the quality of OVW in the early 2000’s. Right now, they have quality independent workers like Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Antonio Cesaro (and Chris Hero shortly) down in FCW, all of whom were developed elsewhere including ROH. If you figure WWE will actually use only one or two of them correctly and get them over as stars on their TV shows, it doesn’t bode well for the future, but imagine how much worse the future would be without these guys? That’s scary.

Q: If John Cena and Randy Orton were to retire tomorrow, who would you pick if you were Vince McMahon to be the face of your company? – Dakota Maxwell, Killeen, TX

A: CM Punk would be the face, but Michael Cole would still be the ass.

Rey Mysterio Talks About Returning, Mil Mascaras & More

17

Injured WWE star Rey Mysterio spoke to The Miami Herald this week to promote WrestleMania 28 tickets going on sale this weekend. Here are some highlights of what Mysterio said about:

Hoping to be Back in Time for WrestleMania 28:

“Especially after the injury that I had, I want to make sure to work hard throughout this therapy so I can go ahead and be back by then.”

Mil Mascaras Entering the WWE Hall of Fame Next Year:

“I think he definitely brought something that was very unique to pro wrestling. You had seen masked wrestlers before but nothing like Mil Mascaras. Not only did he revolutionize the sport in the United States but also in Japan and in Mexico. You would never see that man wear the same outfit twice. His style in the ring, his presence, the designs on his masks, everything was so different every time. I believe he did revolution, to a certain degree, the sport in all three countries.”

The Importance of Luchadores Speaking English in the US:

“I think it’s very important. It’s important to understand the culture, to speak the language, to be able to get around and speak to your teammates. It’s important to be able to express yourself in the ring and on the microphone to the WWE Universe. I think it is a big factor in this industry now.”

John Morrison Talks About His Losing Streak

74

– The WWE wbsite has an article up looking at the recent losing streak of John Morrison titled, “Has JoMo lost his mojo?”

In case you hadn’t noticed how bad Morrison has been jobbing as of late – the article states that Morrison hasn’t won a match since August and has been “smashed” by Cody Rhodes, “squashed” by Mark Henry, “creamed” by Wade Barrett, “dismantled” by Alberto Del Rio and has been “tasting the bottom of Drew McIntyre’s boot” on WWE Superstars.

There have been various reports that Morrison is in the ‘doghouse’ – but Morrison says his losing streak can be attributed to the fact that he returned to action (following a neck injury) sooner than he should have:

“I came back a little bit too early. Physically, I’m here. Spiritually, I’m out of my mind. I’ve got all these things going on in the periphery.”

“What I need to do is cut everything off and go back to square one. What was it that made me want to get into this business as a little John Morrison? I’ve lost touch with that. And for me to be a success I need to get it back.”

On Thursday’s Impact Wrestling, James Storm dropped the title to Robert Roode. Roode turned heel during their match and hit Storm with a beer bottle to win.

Maryse Ouellet’s Message To Vince McMahon – “Your Loss”

28

Paparazzi caught Maryse Ouellet out in Hollywood, California Friday night just hours after WWE announced they had come to terms on the release of the French Canadian entertainer. When asked for comment on her departure from the sports entertainment organization, she flippantly responds, “Vince McMahon, your loss.”

Check out the footage here:

Contrary to her remark, the split was largely mutual since she asked to be released from her contract and WWE no longer had plans to promote her in a high-profile manner. Friends of Ouellet say she lost interest in performing for WWE over the past year and was ready to move on to the next chapter of her life. She plans on returning to glamour modeling and has her sights set on posing for Playboy again. WWE’s decision to release Ouellet was also fueled by the expectation that unlike Gail Kim, she will not join TNA Wrestling.

Ouellet underwent abdominal hernia surgery on August 24, 2011 but never appeared for WWE again. She was cleared to resume wrestling several weeks ago and told friends she would be returning soon.

Ouellet is dating The Miz and the couple currently reside in Southern California.

Tommy Dreamer Says He Left TNA Due To Their Lack Of Logic

15

Tommy Dreamer appeared on Busted Open, which airs every Monday and Wednesday on Sirius 92 and XM 207 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

Dreamer vs. Raven: “Yeah, oh man that was to me, one of the greater stories, feuds in wrestling history .. I put that up there with Dusty Rhodes, and Kevin Sullivan, Carlos Colon, Abdul the Butcher, Bret & Shawn. Just for the sake of how much stuff we really did, and you think longevity-wise you know. We lasted 3 years with that storyline of me never beating him, and the best part of that storyline with me was all the characters that spawned from it with you know Stevie Richards, Beulah, Francine, The Pit Bulls, Brian Lee, so many, The BWO. So many people were actually able to actually get a career because of that as well”

The End of ECW: “Well, it was an amazing, amazing team effort, and there’s a lot of guys who helped contribute to it, I just… I guess my legacy is also just because of so much, behind the scenes that I contributed to the company, and I was also pretty much the last man to stay in the company. I actually stayed longer than Paul Heyman, which was sad cuz’ he was the real owner. And , you know, I went down with the ship, but now it’s all good cuz’ it’s made me the man who I am. At times I was also thinking of changing my name to , ECW or like Edward Charles Wright cuz’ every time I wrestle, they seem to chant that.”

Not wanting to hold titles: “Actually , one of the many fights me and Paul Heyman got into , to me, titles; I never wanted to hold one. You know, titles were given, to me, they’re given to guys to help them get to the next level, and in the original ECW, I really didn’t need it, but the story worked out better cuz’ a lot of times where do you go from there once you win the title. Then, you know, the whole storyline, and again, it was all Paul basically saying, “Don’t put the title around your waist. I don’t want anyone ever to say there was a picture of you with the title around your waist, and like that would be the next chapter for Tommy Dreamer. He finally won the title. Not only did he lose the girl, but he also never got a picture of him with the title around his waist, you know just to add to the saga of professional wrestling, and the original ECW.”

Parting ways with TNA Wrestling: “There was a lot of things. It was.. contracts and it just whatever. I didn’t put up with a lot of stuff in WWE, I’m not gonna’ put up with stuff in TNA. And you know what? I miss everybody in WWE, and I miss everybody in TNA, but,..I’m happy in my life and at 40 years old, if I can’t, I don’t want to say do it my way, but again, not seeing things done logically, and looking at stuff from a business point of view. Then I just say it doesn’t make sense to me, and it’s like no matter how hard I work, no matter how much I destroy my body, no matter how much other guys destroy their body, if stuff’s not going to change, to me that really, really bothers me, and I don’t know. I guess I don’t want to be a part of it.

“I don’t want negativity in my life just because I’m in a way different stage in my life. I love wrestling. I‘ve loved it since I was a little kid, and I don’t want to be the bitter old veteran who hates wrestling, and for a while like when stuff doesn’t make sense or they just do stuff to do it, and just do it, I get so mad. I just..I’d rather just walk away and watch it from afar, and be like an armed chair quarterback on Monday’s or Tuesday’s, ya’ know?”
