John Cena Discusses Ryder Revolution And Feud With The Rock

53

Chad Dukes of 106.7 The Fan DC’s Lavar Arrington Show with Chad Dukes does a wrestling show (The Chad Dukes Wrestling Show) on Friday nights. On November 16th Chad did an interview with John Cena. Here is a link to the show’s twitter (http://twitter.com/DukesWrestling) and a blog post about the interview on the show website (http://chaddukeswrestlingshow.com/2011/11/17/john-cena-on-why-hes-part-of-the-ryder-revolution/). The interview is included in the post. Below is a quick transcription of the highlights of the interview, where Cena covers his view of the feud with The Rock brewing before Wrestlemania and putting over Zack Ryder.

On Zach Ryder’s career path and his support for him:

Chad Dukes: You were putting over Zach Ryder before Zach Ryder was cool…Just curious why that is; what did you see in Zach Ryder to say this is a guy I want ot make sure gets his spotlight on Raw?

John Cena: You’re probably going to censor me out but I saw a set of balls. I saw a kid in an era in which everyone is afraid to show their talents. This kid was like ‘You know what; I’m going down anyway so I’m going down swinging.’ And I’ve been in that spot before. I’ve been told by everyone ‘You’re nothing; You’re not going to be anything; Hey how you feel about doing this rap thing?’ If I’m going down, I’m going down swinging. So I really, I saw a lot of that in him. I honestly, whether he’s battle tested and ready for the next level, I’m not into that sort of speculation. I just like seeing a kid with a set of nuts who is just ready to throw it out on the line and risk it all, rather than ‘Hey man I just don’t want to rock the boat and I don’t want to do anything that’s going to draw attention to myself.’ We’re in the business of drawing attention to yourself. So when I see a kid like Zach Ryder- by the way you have to follow him on twitter @ZachRyder…- the kid is, he’s just one of those guys that was willing to take a chance. And I admire that quality out of people. Its something that’s not found enough in the WWE locker room.

Chad Dukes: Do you see [Zach Ryder]…being a figure that’s out there and ‘you’re the main event’ on a Monday Night RAW or Friday Night Smackdown?

John Cena: Well, honestly, that’s up to Zach Ryder. And I really like the fact that he was like ‘I really don’t care about the next step, I care about the first step.’ The cool thing about Zach is he has made that first step. And so many guys speculate on “What if I do this, then this is going to happen.” F it, like just make the first step. So now, Zach has to realize that he’s got some steam going and realize how he got the steam going in the first place, and then take it to the next step. Bu the fact that he threw speculation out the window and took a dive into the deep end and really did something that wasn’t being done and made an impression, that’s great. I think the biggest thing for him is maybe these upcoming weeks or months leading up towards Wrestlemania I think it would be a huge victory if you would see Zach Ryder on the Wrestlemania card.

On his feud with The Rock and they’re upcoming match at Survivor Series:

Chad Dukes: I got to ask one last thing about your feud with The Rock. Are there any parameters set up? Have you guys had a conversation? Because this is not just ‘Hey brother I’m going to kick your ass’ type f stuff going on, it gets personal. And you call him out for not being there and he calls you out for things, and it looks like you guys are really willing to say whatever you need to get this feud over with the fans. Which you don’t need to do anyway, who doesn’t want to see John Cena and The Rock at Wrestlemania. But were there any parameters going into this thing saying ‘this is out of bounds, this is off limits?’ Because it doesn’t look like it…

John Cena: Well I think if we’re both professionals and Ill say this with the utmost of integrity, Rock is a future Hall of Famer. He’s had an illustrious career in the WWE. He’s now a bona-fide box office superstar. If anybody is at fault for waving the personal trigger its me, just because I get a little testy about some of the stuff that he’s been quoted as saying in the past, some of the stuff he’s quoted as saying on our broadcast. I get testy about that, because I work for the WWE full time. I work for the WWE all the time. I will work for the WWE when I cant physically perform for the WWE. As long as there is a brand to work for, I want to be involved in it. I love the company, I love the people who run it, I love its administration, I love success stories like Zach Ryder. I love being there to see that and develop before my eyes. Whether I’m a part of it, whether I’m helping it or whether I’m just a third wheel watching someone succeed. And everybody knows that I have a little bit of a discrepancy with the way Dwayne handles himself. And every once and a while when things get too tense I bring something up that I probably shouldn’t. But, you know, sometimes your personality gets the best of you and if they’re going to remember this feud for eternity- which I really think they are, like you said it’s the match that everyone has to see- at least at the end of the day I’ll have got my point across. Yea, so I’ve already apologized to Dwayne, not only on twitter but in person about some of the stuff I said. It was unprofessional but in the heat of the moment sometimes you let your heart pour out rather than thinking with your head. And I have a feeling it’s probably not the last you’ve heard of me saying all that stuff.

*SPOILERS* WWE SMACKDOWN Results For Tonight

Video: IGN Gives WWE ’12 “Amazing” 9/10 Rating

24

IGN Reviews WWE 12

Video game website IGN.com has released its review of the new WWE ’12 video game and gave it a 9/10 “Amazing” rating. If you’re familiar with IGN’s ratings, you’ll know that a 9/10 is a major accomplishment. This is the best rating a WWE video game has gotten in many, many years – and a real sign that THQ’s complete overhaul of the WWE video game property has paid off bigtime.

Here’s a summary of their review, followed by their video review:

  • Presentation: 9.0
Some incredible work here, recreating the WWE experience in a dramatic, almost lifelike way. The story needs some work.
  • Graphics: 8.5
On the ramp and in the ring, the graphics are great. When it comes to acting, the results are about as good as you might expect.
  • Sound: 7.5
All the music you want is here, and so are the wrestlers’ voices, but the wrestlers have more passion on TV.
  • Gameplay: 8.5
The core mechanics are excellent, but the single-player story doesn’t want to let you use them.
  • Lasting Appeal: 9.5
There are almost too many options. Online is great but the interface is a bit awkward.
  • OVERALL: 9.0 (“Amazing”)

Informer Talks Chris Jericho, Goldust-Cody & More

9

WWE insider “The Informer” (from WWE Magazine) has a new article up on the company website looking at a number of behind-the-scenes stories. Here are some highlights from this update:

* One WWE Superstar was conspicuous in his absence from WWE’s recent European tour due to issues with his travel visa. (Let’s hope he gets it sorted out before WWE’s trip to Japan in December.)

* Which WWE Diva has recently become a really big hockey fan? (It may explain her new explosive temper and penchant for fisticuffs.)

* There’s sibling rivalry, but this is taking things to an extreme. One WWE Legend wants to return at WrestleMania to face his brother in the ring! (It’s gonna be an interesting Thanksgiving in that family’s household!)

* A former WWE Champion tweeted this week that he would “never wrestle for WWE again.” (You knew I had to shamelessly work Twitter into my column this week after Monday’s Raw.)

Update On John Morrison’s Contract Status, WWE Profiles X-Pac

53

— John Morrison’s current contract with WWE expires at the end of November, the Wrestling Observer reports. It is not known whether he has re-signed with the organization.

He was pulled from advertised for WWE’s upcoming tour of Japan, which takes place November 30 and December 1, 2011 in Yokohama. His last announced appearance takes place at the November 28, 2011 Raw SuperShow in Columbia, South Carolina.

— WWE.com has added Sean Waltman to their Alumni section. The multi-time champion is listed as Sean Waltman despite never actually performing for WWE under his real name.

The official Twitter feed of Mick Foley’s UK Stand Up Comedy tour wrote the following Wednesday, “Lots of talk about @TheRealXPac from @WWE today. What could it possibly mean? #TwoWordsForYa.” Waltman retweeted the post.

Waltman is loosely affiliated with WWE as he scouts and evaluates talent for Florida Championship Wrestling, their developmental league.

Chyna Interested In Returning To TNA, Jackie Upset With Snub

32

— Though Chyna has her sights set on returning to WWE, she has expressed interest in performing for TNA Wrestling again.

“I would like the opportunity to work with TNA,” she said on Twitter in response to whether she would like to perform for the organization again.

She added, “Love all the girls at TNA.”

Chyna’s stint with TNA earlier this year lasted only two dates; no official agreement was made for her to continue working. She stated in a June interview that she never heard back from company officials after her final appearance.

— Jackie Moore expressed her disappointment with being left off the 10-Knockouts Gauntlet Match at Monday’s Impact Wrestling taping. The match, which airs tonight, will determine a new number one contender to Gail Kim’s TNA Women’s Knockout Championship.

The sparingly seen Knockout tweeted, “Did they forget to book me for the big Gauntlet match? That’s a shame.”

Moore has yet to compete for TNA since being awarded a contract by Knockouts head Karen Jarrett on the September 1 episode of Impact Wrestling.

Heath Slater’s Suspension Ends, Female Wrestlers Get Tryouts

20

— Heath Slater’s thirty-day suspension for his first violation of WWE’s Talent Wellness Program expired on Tuesday. Therefore, he is now eligible to resume performing for the organization.

WWE announced on October 17, 2011 that the SmackDown Superstar had been suspended for thirty days due to his non-compliance with their drug testing policy.

One other wrestler is currently serving suspension: Evan Bourne. He is eligible to return to action on December 1, 2011.

— WWE held tryouts last week during their tour of the United Kingdom. Among those participating were European female wrestlers Rachel Walker and Jazzy.

— Mike Graham’s restaurant in Hernando, Florida is facing foreclosure.

Stipulation Added To Survivor Series Match, Cena Apologizes

18

— WWE announced Thursday that the Divas Championship Match between Beth Phoenix and Eve at Sunday’s Survivor Series pay-per-view will be a Lumberjill Match.

WWE explains: “The Divas Championship Match at Survivor Series should be a one-on-one affair. However, nothing in this rivalry has been evenly contested, thanks to the underhanded tactics of The Glamazon and Natalya. Now, the decks will be stacked a little more equally, as Kelly Kelly, Alicia Fox, Natalya and the rest of the WWE Divas will be ringside to make sure the action stays in the ring.”

— John Cena says family business caused him to be scratched from his scheduled appearance this Saturday on ESPN’s College GameDay.

“I want to apologize to espn’s gameday crew. I thank them for their hospitality, but I have some immediate family bizz that needs handling,” Cena wrote on Twitter.

Cabana Speaks – “There’s A Lot Of People That Don’t Get Me”

10

Colt Cabana joined Live Audio Wrestling this past Sunday night for 40-minute chat discussing a variety of topics including the success of the ‘Art of Wrestling’, his recent tour with Pro Wrestling NOAH, working without a national platform and a more. The full interview is available here. Highlights are as follows:

Podcast success and comparisons to comedian Marc Meron: “I had been fired by WWE, I was watching my career go on a down slope. I didn’t know how much longer the buzz of, “Scotty Goldman’s back on the Indys now,” or Colt Cabana, and so in the same way, it’s very parallel. I saw what he was doing, and I saw the big buzz of the podcast comedy world, and I know that wrestling is always way behind. I pitched the idea to do my podcast for WWE, and they’re just like, “What? I don’t get it.” I’ll continue to do it myself, I’ll continue to have my fans. Everything’s great, fans are coming out to shows, they’re coming to meet me, I’m talking to them for an hour every week. It’s great.”

The ‘hidden’ personalities that have come out on his show: I always said that the problem with WWE is they don’t get to know their talent well enough. When you know somebody really well, that’s when you can write for somebody, and that’s when you can find their strengths and weaknesses. I didn’t even work hands-on with Paul Heyman, but he’s like a god when it comes to finding strengths and weaknesses. You could tell in that whole ECW product, and even the stuff he wrote in OVW. Unfortunately, Triple H, John Laurinaitis, they don’t know their guy. That’s the beauty of what I can do as a wrestler to help other wrestler, I can help these guys shine. I’ve seen Cliff Compton as a prime example, he’s one of the funniest guys I know. He’s a born entertainer, and you can tell by the podcast, you can tell by anything he does. He’s ready to make anybody money, including himself.

Working with Pro Wrestling NOAH: “For some reason, they brought me over, and I had to recognize what that reason was. That was just to be me, the character, the outgoing, the fun-loving, comedic Colt Cabana. My wrestling always speaks for itself, it’s not like I’m not a skilled professional wrestler, but I think when I bring the whole character, that’s when people really seem to enjoy what’s going on. I made a conscious decision just to be me. We didn’t speak the same language, I don’t speak any Japanese, but the language of comedy was there. With a body movement, or a face movement, or just a sound effect, I would have those Japanese fans laughing. It spoke a lot, and it really instilled a lot of, what I’m doing is right and I’m good at what I’m doing, because I’m able to make these people laugh and I’m able to entertain them.”

Working outside of the major national promotions: “I was willing to take this huge pay cut to be one of the bottom barrel of the WWE guys, just because I have some crazy dream, or I wanna right some wrong of what I did in the past, or I want the ability to show millions instead of hundreds of thousands of people what I’m all about. I think (Shawn) Daivari put it best to me, he’s like, “People either get you or they don’t get you.” There’s a lot of people that don’t get me, and I think that’s just some of the older generation, they don’t get what I’m about. But I do have a lot of people that get me, and those are my hardcore, faithful fans that help me survive. They support me, they support the things that I do. Even though I’m not on a national televised broadcast, or I’m not on Spike or even Sinclair, they still support me, and they still listen to what I have to say.”

Gail Kim On Her TNA Return & Why She Turned Heel

12

TNA Knockouts Champion Gail Kim recently spoke with The UK Sun  about her recent jump from WWE back to TNA, turning heel and more. Here are some highlights of what Gail Kim said about:

Returning to TNA: “It was easy because I had such a great experience the first time. The way the woman’s division is portrayed here – this is what I love to do. Be in the ring, and show what I can do in that ring. The division over here is so strong, and the girls are so talented. There is a great group of women here and I just wanted to be part of it and contribute.”

Her recent heel turn: “My first half of my career I was a heel. I then stayed a babyface for a long time, five or six years, and you always want to be refreshing, to have a change. I wanted to explore that. Vince Russo talked to me about it, and I said I was on the same wavelength.”

TNA’s Knockouts vs. WWE’s Divas: “The way the woman’s division is portrayed here – this is what I love to do. Be in the ring, and show what I can do in that ring. The division over here is so strong, and the girls are so talented. There is a great group of women here and I just wanted to be part of it and contribute.”

TNA Star Jesse Neal Leaving The Company

62

TNA star Jesse Neal is reportedly leaving the company after this weekend’s TNA live events.

Neal tweeted @TheJesseNeal:

“Some things you just have to question but… then I again I don’t give a f—. It’s time for a new me and a change.”

“If you want to book me I am free after this weekend, let me know. And trust me, you’ll get your moneys worth.”

Update On Ryder Not Getting A US Title Shot This Sunday

76

The WWE website has a storyline-driven article up looking at Zack Ryder’s failed petition to get a United States title shot at Survivor Series.

John “Funkhouser” Laurinaitis explains why John Morrison was awarded the title shot instead of Zack Ryder, which Ryder has dubbed, the #NewYorkScrewjob:

“I think I’m being very generous because John Morrison was on a losing streak which he seemed to have broken with a victory over Dolph Ziggler in a match last week. I’m all about giving talent opportunities and I feel that John Morrison has earned an opportunity to compete for the United States Championship.”

“As far as Zack Ryder’s twitter petition goes, no General Manager in WWE history is more about social media than I am. However, I feel he is going to have to gain many more than 15,000 signatures before I consider giving him an opportunity to compete for the United States Championship. Again, I’m all about giving talent opportunities … when I feel they have earned them.”

Plans For Rock vs. Cena, WM28 Billboards, Live SmackDowns

40

– The latest plan for The Rock’s match with John Cena at WrestleMania 28 is that the match will not be for the WWE Championship. WWE creative has gone back and forth as to whether the WWE title will be on the line, but the general feeling is that the match doesn’t need a title defense to seem important and the company can get more mileage out of promoting a separate WWE title match on the card.

– Speaking of The Rock vs. John Cena at WrestleMania, WWE is already spending big money to promote the dream match. We’ve reported already that WWE bought a big billboard in New York City’s Times Square. Now – WWE has purchased another billboard on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, which is a pricey location.

– WWE officials are talking with SyFy about doing more live Tuesday SmackDown specials in early 2012 to build WrestleMania 28.

Due to the ratings success of WWE’s previous live Tuesday SmackDown specials, WWE has been toying with the idea of moving SmackDown to Tuesdays permanently.

Mother Of DH Smith Says WWE Did Not Want Him To Succeed

30

Diana Hart Smith, the outspoken mother of Harry Smith (a/k/a David Hart Smith), continues to criticize WWE brass following his recent departure from the organization. She attribute his lack of success to company heads having it in for her son.

“I don’t think WWE wanted to see DH/Harry succeed there. Maybe (Davey Boy Smith) had ribbed an existing agent who took it out on Harry,” she wrote on Twitter.

“Not sure of the WWE Creative’s logic, but they didn’t want fans to see how exceptional Harry is.”

The third generation wrestler echoed similar sentiments during a recent interview with Live Audio Wrestling.

“The big complaint that I had with WWE was just that they never gave me a fair chance, ever. We had a good deal with the tag team title run and everything, but guys like Drew McIntyre and Sheamus, they’re obviously very good talents and big guys and everything, but if they had given me the rocket like they had given those two guys, I’m sure that with my family’s lineage and going over to Canada and the UK, they could have done some really good business. For whatever reason, they didn’t,” Harry said.

“I’m not gonna point any fingers at anybody, but I think that there’s people up there that probably didn’t like my family, or maybe my Dad ribbed too many of the guys that are up top now. That’s basically the way that it happened, and I’m glad to be gone really. I don’t want to be wasting my time at a place that doesn’t appreciate me, or doesn’t want to do anything with me.”

Harry is now training mixed martial arts full-time in Tampa, Florida and looking to make his debut next year. He spars extensively with Josh Barnett, a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Diana feels they are an unstoppable force.

She tweeted, “I think Harry and Josh training would be comparable to the power of a tsunami and genius of rocket scientists, who don’t know ‘tap out’ definition.”

Goldust Campaigning For WrestleMania Match Against Cody

60

Goldust, who currently works behind the scenes as a producer and trainer for WWE, has begun campaigning on Twitter for a match against his brother Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania XXVIII.

He states, “With your voices heard to @WWE, goldust vs cody at wm28…..ic title versus career. For the haters can hope i lose to cody and retire, teamgoldie can hope for an ass whoopin for the ages and new ic champ.”

Goldust continues, “Here’s the deal…..the fire in me is too strong to lose to my move stealing lemmule of a brother….experience everytime.

“His ic title …..my career…..i would whoop him, take back My ic title and shatter all his dreams. Only teamgoldie can make this happen…u know how much it means to me.”

Meanwhile, Goldust has been blocking users who mention his former personas, including Black Reign and the short-lived Seven.

Ultimate Warrior Comments On Death Rumors, Touts Popularity

14

Speaking to The Good Man Project, Ultimate Warrior comments on the long standing rumor that he is dead. Cameron Conaway asks the legendary grappler, “Sadly, many people still think you’re dead. Can you fill us in on what you’ve been up to in the past ten years or so?”

Warrior responds, “Yes, being dead is one of the many urban legends, falsehoods, mischaracterizations, what have you, about me. Nothing much I can do if people want to remain ignorant. I’ve had an Internet presence since ’96-’97 so it has been easy for a long time to find out the truth. Of course my former employers have worked hard and spent a great deal of time and money over the years to fabricate and spread lies, all of which have helped to keep rumors and other nonsense alive.

“The quick answer to what I have been doing is that I have been doing a lot of living … GREAT living. I’m alive which seems to be an achievement all its own when you consider most of the guys I worked with are now dead, prematurely of course.

“On a practical level, I’ve stayed creative and productive as an artist. When I look back on my career creating and performing The Ultimate Warrior, in what was indeed sports entertainment, I see what I did as performance art. There are many things I loved about my time in the business and all its challenges but the engagement of creativity was certainly a vital aspect to my success, so I have continued to aspire through other forms of creativity. For me, this was natural, not something others should be surprised by.

Warrior continues, “Ultimate Warrior in action figures and video games is still today a more popular selling attraction than even most of today’s superstars.”

He comments further on the ways of the Warrior and gives his thoughts on the problems of males having “emasculated cultural role models.” The full interview is available here.

Daniels Discusses Wrestling’s Biggest Change, Portraying A Heel

9

Speaking to Antelope Valley Press, Christopher Daniels says his heel character in TNA Wrestling is based off his real-life personality and therefore easy for him to portray.

“I’m a bit of a (smart-aleck) in real life and so the character I’m doing now, especially on television, is that character amped up to a degree where you would want to see me getting smacked in the mouth. But that’s part of the fun of it,” Daniels says.

“It’s a lot easier being the villain, especially for my style of wrestling. It’s a lot easier for me to be the foil than to be the dynamic focus of attention.”

In the nearly 19 years since Daniels has been wrestling, he feels the biggest change has been how accessible wrestlers and wrestling is now to fans due to the internet. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow wrestlers to instantly connect with fans.

“One of my favorite things now is to get on Twitter and just say something ridiculous and just gauge the response,” Daniels said “I get people just so upset.”

Technology has also been huge boon to wrestlers looking to get noticed.

“Back in the day, if you wanted to be seen by a promoter and you wanted to get work, you had to send them a tape,” Daniels said. “There were many long hours of having two VCRs, one connected to the other, and making your own tape — record, stop, record, stop. Now, you email a YouTube link to a guy.”

He continues, “As a wrestling fan, it’s so much easier to see all of this stuff. “In turn, it sort of makes it easier on the wrestler, depending on who you are to be seen or to sort of spread your signature to the wrestling public.”

Daniels can’t pinpoint what’s made him successful in the wrestling business, but he’s hoping it continues for several more years.

“I wish I could say that there was one specific break that put me over the top, but it was a bunch of little breaks that sort of led to having a schedule where I was doing this for an actual living rather than just weekend fun,” he said. “Hopefully, I keep going. Keep those small breaks going.”

Paul Heyman Talks To WWE About Steve Austin’s ECW Matches

18

WWE.com has published a video of Paul Heyman recalling Steve Austin’s brief tenure in Extreme Championship Wrestling.

“Steve had two matches in ECW, I wish he had 2000,” Heyman says. “He wrestled Mikey Whipwreck at the November to Remember 1995 for the ECW World Title and he wrestled Mikey Whipwreck and The Sandman in a Three-Way Dance for the ECW World Title in December 1995. I wanted to build ECW around Steve Austin as the World Champion. I even pitched to Steve winning the Title at the November to Remember 1995, but he was such a fan of Mikey Whipwreck, he thought it would be better if Mikey won the match and also, Steve thought it was better for his character.

Heyman continues, “And this is where Steve was so ahead of the game, far ahead of everybody else. Steve thought it was better for his character to lose and bitch about it, cause then he had something else to be angry about. Then he had another reason to push that character all the way to the line, all the way to the wall. And he knew that in losing, he could become a bigger star than if he won the ECW World Title.

“It was just so smart. He was so far ahead of everybody else.”
