PWI Names The Top 50 Women’s Wrestlers Of 2011

24

SHIMMER Champion Madison Eagles has earned the number one position in Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s fourth annual “PWI Female 50” list, which ranks the top 50 women’s wrestlers in North America from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. She succeeds Michelle McCool, who ranked No. 1 in last year’s list.

Pro Wrestling Illustrated attributes their decision to ranking Eagles as the top women’s wrestler in North America with the following: “This year’s list was unlike any other in the four-year history of the “Female 50.” For one thing, there was no obvious frontrunner in either WWE or TNA. Last year’s number one, Michelle McCool, retired after a few lackluster months. The WWE Divas title dropped in prominence and was held for a significant amount of time by Brie Bella who, while improved, doesn’t exactly conjure thoughts of Sensational Sherri or Trish Stratus.”

Mickie James and Madison Rayne were also considered for the top spot, but for a variety of reasons, were ultimately deemed not worthy.

“So we made a bold decision. We looked to the indies. Two possible candidates were SHIMMER champion Madison Eagles and WSU champion Mercedes Martinez. It was a difficult choice to make,” the magazine explains. “Fortunately for us, Martinez and Eagles faced off in March for Eagles’ SHIMMER title. Eagles managed to win a terrific match, which proved to be the deciding factor in our decision.”

PWI also explains how the “Female 50” was determined: “To determine this list, we evaluated each woman’s innate wrestling ability, accomplishments during the past year, physical strength and conditioning, quality of opposition, charisma, and title success.”

Some women’s wrestlers contracted to WWE and TNA, such as Nikki Bella, Rosa Mendes, Tamina and Brooke Tessmacher, were left off the “Female 50” because PWI felt they did not earn a spot over some of the independent talent listed. The magazine explains, “While being on WWE’s or TNA’s global platform helps your chances, it doesn’t mean you get a free passage onto the “Female 50.”

James Comments On WWE, Rayne’s Husband Sent Overseas

13

— TNA Women’s Knockout Champion Mickie James was asked on her official website if she would ever return to WWE.

“This is a tough question that I often get asked and usually avoid answering. I can’t say that I never will or would go back to the WWE.” James said.

“I honestly never intended on leaving until I retired. However we don’t choose our destiny. We just live it. I am very happy at TNA and am enjoying my time here for as long as it lasts. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to grow inside and out as a performer, artist, and a woman. One really never knows what tomorrow holds. That’s why you make the most of every moment. Good, bad, or indifferent, and own it like only you can.”

She also gave her thoughts on the WWE Hall of Fame, writing: “To be inducted in to the Hall of Fame is a huge honor for any one person in this industry. It not only gives you credibility as the mark you made in the pages of history to the fans, but notoriety for the path you paved for everyone who followed in your footsteps.”

— Madison Rayne indicated on her Twitter account that her husband, who serves for the United States military, was recently sent overseas. The multi-time TNA Women’s Champion tied the knot last February and changed her name to Ashley Cabot.

MAILBAG: Does The Survivor Series Concept Work In 2011?

16

SEScoops Mailbag for September 9th

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: I was wondering if a new version of the Nation of Domination would work today with [Mark] Henry, Zeke and R-Truth? I see a lot of potential in this stable. It could push Truth to main event caliber as leader of that stable. Also, what is Christian’s future after his defeats in his feud against Orton? I can’t help but think he’ll be used to push other wrestlers and stop being in the spotlight after a while. – Shaneel from Mauritius

A: R-Truth already headlined one pay-per-view earlier this year and was promptly ushered back down to the mid-card. It’s not a bad place for him to be considering he’s getting TV time each week and has a gimmick the fans react to, but I don’t see how leading a faction of “angry black dudes” is going to make him into a career main eventer. Besides, we don’t need to see a revival of the Nation of Domination, just like we don’t need to see another version of DX or the nWo. As for Christian, his future is precisely what you mentioned, helping to put other wrestlers over after fighting for the championship for five straight months. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, he proved he can be quite an asset in that role back when he was a babyface in ECW.

Q: I was watching the OMG! The Top 50 Incidents in WWE History DVD and there was the huge ring collapsing incident with Big Show and Brock Lesnar. I was wondering if it was scripted or the ring just gave out because the reaction from the crowd and Taz & Michael Cole made it look so real? – Hesham from Egypt

A: That means they did their job very well. It was all planned in advance and is one of the most impressive stunts they’ve ever pulled off. There was someone at the controls behind the scenes ready to activate the ring collapse as soon as both men crashed to the mat. Taz screaming “Holy S**t!” in response only made it feel that much more realistic.

Q: The recent story I read concerning WWE having to buy the (expensive) rights to “Cult of Personality” by Living Colour reminded me of a question I’ve pondered for a long time now. How was Paul Heyman allowed to use all the licensed music he used for his ECW wrestlers’ ring entrances? I assume he did not pay the record companies. Why wasn’t he sued? – Sean

A: The simple answer is, he wasn’t allowed but he did it anyway. ECW was such a small entity, Heyman either figured nobody would know or care enough to do anything about it. He got away with a lot of stuff like that. I believe they did eventually have video distribution for their PPV events (I could be wrong about this), but even if they did, it was on such a small scale compared to a company like WWF at the time that they simply slipped under the radar, whereas Vince McMahon wouldn’t be able to use “Enter Sandman” on his shows and then turn around and sell DVD’s of those same events for $30 without having to pay astronomical royalty fees.

Q: Do you feel like CM Punk has the biggest hand in young stars like Evan Bourne, Tyler Reks and Zack Ryder being pushed, even if it is just a mini push? Or do you feel like HHH had the idea for new talents to be pushed better. – Anonymous

A: Let’s not get carried away here. Tyler Reks was on camera backstage for all of 20 seconds on Monday night, and I don’t even remember him being referred to by name. I’d hardly call that a push. But yes, Punk did go to Vince McMahon behind the scenes and voiced his support for Zack Ryder. Does he deserve the credit for Ryder’s increased TV time? Who’s to really say, but I’d argue that Ryder should get most of that credit because without starting his YouTube show (which garners more views than many videos on WWE.com) and putting in the extra effort to get himself noticed, he wouldn’t be getting any sort of push at all.

Q: With this whole brand splitting going on, does that mean Smackdown will be live for now on or back to Friday Nights and taped? I really like the whole idea of it being live and on Tuesdays, you seem to get a lot more people to tune in. – Coty

A: Smackdown is still a taped show on Friday nights for the time being. If they schedule another live special on a Tuesday and it performs well, that may convince SyFy to make a move, but as of right now, they only did it that one time to avoid running on the Labor Day holiday. It’s true that airing on Tuesdays would be significantly better for getting more eyeballs as Friday is one of the worst nights of the week for TV, but the show being live has VERY little to do with the overall rating. I’ve had this argument with people before and talked about this on the Sound Off, but people put way too much emphasis on live vs. taped. Yes, some people will read spoilers and avoid watching certain shows, but there’s no real evidence to suggest that taped shows perform consistently worse than live ones.

Q: What are the salaries of some of the main eventers such as John Cena and CM Punk? What are salaries of some mid-carders? – CJ S.

A: There are salary figures posted online if you search for them, but as far as I know, they are not accurate. WWE does not provide information about salaries for specific performers. However, it’s a safe bet that John Cena and Randy Orton, for example, each have a base salary in the high six-figure range and make significantly more than that based on their percentage of PPV revenue and merchandise. Depending on your definition of who is or isn’t a mid-card talent, they can make anywhere from the low to mid-six figures, but something like being in WWE’s annual video game will bring them a lot more money in royalties. In short, it’s not as easy or as glamorous a life as some may think it is, but it’s not bad work to get if you can find it.

Q: Why has the WWE gone away from “themed” PPV’s? I dare you to find one fan that wouldn’t want to see a Survivor Series booked exclusively with “teams vs teams”. In fact, I say bring back the In Your House’s too. I could use a free place to live. – Seth from Parts Unknown

A: Count me as that one fan you claim does not exist. In fact, I could probably find you 10 more people who would not want to see Survivor Series booked exclusively with team matches. It was a concept that worked many years ago, but it’s no longer unique. We see multiple man matches on TV every single week these days. In fact, we just had a 4-on-4 elimination match last Monday night! In my opinion, WWE has gone to the extreme with these “themed” PPV’s and needs to shave a few off because they’re killing those gimmicks. Take “Hell in a Cell” for example. The whole point of the match is to serve as the climax to a feud between two men, and it should be used sparingly so that when you do use it, it feels special. Instead, we now have an annual show that features at least TWO cell matches on the same night! What’s worse is that WWE doesn’t even have any feuds right now going long enough that would warrant having a cell match. You could have done it with Orton and Christian, but they seem to have moved away from that (and rightfully so). The first year they had HIAC as a PPV, it did 283,000 buys. Last year the show did 210,000 buys. This year, I expect that number to drop even lower. Now you’ve killed the concept.

Q: Have there been any Casket or Buried Alive matches that did not involve Undertaker or Kane in any way? Do you think we will ever see these types of matches after Undertaker and Kane retire? – John from Chicago

A: There have not been, and once both men are gone for good, I doubt there will ever be a reason to resurrect them. Besides, WWE does its fair share of “buried alive” matches each year anyway, usually involving John Cena.

Nick Hogan Returns To Court, Daffney Scheduled For Hearing

8

— A Florida judge refused Nick Bollea’s request today for an early release from his five-year probation sentence for reckless driving, according to the St. Petersburg Times. He did, however, say he probably would grant the request less than a year from now.

Bollea, son of Hulk Hogan, is serving probation after pleading no contest to reckless driving with serious bodily injury stemming from his automobile crash on August 26, 2007 that severely injured Nick Graziano. Bollea will not be registered as convicted felon if he successfully completes all the terms of his sentence.

Full details on the case are available here.

— Former TNA Wrestling talent Shannon Spruill (a/k/a Daffney) is scheduled for a disposition hearing next Wednesday as a result of her July 19, 2011 arrest in Hillsborough County, Florida for driving under the influence with property damage.

Spruill’s breath test was more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in her system. The test showed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.187 percent, above the state legal limit of 0.08 percent. Michael Manna (a/k/a Stevie Richards) posted $500 bond. Court records listed property damage estimated at $4,500.

Triple H Talks About His Critics, WWE’s Product, Hall of Fame

9

In a new interview with Chris Yandek of CYInterview.com, Triple H responds to his wrestling critics who believe he has received preferential treatment and greater opportunities on WWE TV, because he is married to Vince McMahon’s daughter, Stephanie. There have been claims that he held wrestlers down, keeping them from achieving more success in the WWE and receiving more opportunities to shine on the company’s television programs. Now working in creative and behind the scenes, he responds to the question if believes working in talent development is his chance to show he wants to see other guys get over.

“I know what I accomplished in this business. I know why I accomplished it. I don’t. Critics and what people say about this or that or my marriage [to Stephanie McMahon] or any of that stuff is crap. It’s mostly started by people that are either jealous or angry that they failed where other people succeeded. I mean, that’s a common, I was told it when I started in the business.

It’s a common saying in this business, you can make friends or you can make money. You can have buddies or you can get over. Which one do you want? You know, and they don’t come together. And I think, I don’t, I never look at it that way. I don’t have anything to prove to anybody. I’ll put my body of work up against anybody in the business. I’ll put my drawing power up against anybody in the business. That’s irrelevant. It’s people’s opinions”

Triple H follows up by stating what he believes the WWE Product lacks today with the newer wrestlers in the company. He explains what these guys need to be successful.

“We’re a victim of our own success. There’s no place for guys to go and figure out how to do this. We have to teach them kind of and get them up to speed to speak. Even when you get guys off the independent scene, they are very much independent wrestlers and then the independent scene will, so these guys are the greatest guys in the world and you bring them up and they flounder on the big stage. They can’t. They can’t. It’s a completely different animal and a completely different world and you have to, it’s relearning and re-teaching. That’s the biggest, I think, struggle we have is getting these guys there.

But listen, at the end of the day, you just have to find guys with the right charisma and they have to be the ones to put that charisma out there. Nobody told The Rock how to be The Rock…Work rate is important, guy’s skill in the ring is important, but at the end of the day it’s about charisma. It’s the ability to draw fans to arenas and the guy that draws the most fans to the arena for whatever reason, positive or negative, he’s the top guy.”

He does believe the WWE product could be bigger than the 7.0 ratings that were put up during the WWE Attitude Era:

“Do I think it can ever get that big again? History can repeat. I say without a doubt. I think it can be even bigger…What tomorrow brings, no one knows.”

Finally, Hunter talks about winning the majority of vintage wrestling auctions from his mentor “Killer” Kowalski. He says they are working on a real WWE Hall of Fame for people to see all the historic wrestling items.

“I think I was gone on the road for SummerSlam, but I had somebody at the office bid online and I got I think like 99 percent of everything wrestling-wise, which I’m glad I did. I just didn’t want that to go to somebody that just hid it away somewhere. I wanted the world to be able to see how great he really was. And do I think they’ll ever be a hall of fame? Yes. I think they’ll be a physical hall of fame. That’s something we’re working on. It’s definitely in the works. It’s just a matter of when, where. Is it a traveling hall of fame? Is it a permanent place? There’s a lot of questions and thoughts on it and we’re in the process of collecting things to put in there. But the Kowalski stuff for me was as much a legend in this business was also a very personal thing for me.”

William Regal Wants To Be World Champion Before Retiring

31

William Regal has been talking about retiring from the ring for almost a year now, and announced on Thursday that he wants one last chance to become the first British World Heavyweight champion before hanging it up for good.

Regal, who has been announcing on NXT as of late, told fans during last November’s WWE UK tour that that tour would likely be his last. On Thursday night – Regal wrote on Twitter that  he wants to compete on this fall’s WWE UK tour – and plans to win the World Heavyweight title in front of his hometown crowd in Liverpool, England:

“Trying to think if Teddy Long owes me a favour.I need to get a World Championship match on Smackdown on Liverpool. Maybe the last chance I have of becoming the first English World Champion in front of WWE’s loyalist fans.

Some people are saying I’m passed it.Maybe so but @WWE,look at it as charity.Give an old rogue a chance.”

Regal’s request got a ton of feedback from his Twitter followers, who support his  plans and want to see him make history before ending his storied career. Regal wrote:

“I normally never retweet about wrestling,WWE or me(I don’t need to because I’m so over anyway)so sorry to everyone who it’s driving mental. I just want @WWE to take notice.Give back to your loyalest fans(and purely selfish reasons as I want to be the first British World champ).”

Whether or not Regal does actually wrestle his last match this year – he’s reportedly under WWE contract through 2014. He is currently doing commentary on NXT and has also done commentary for WWE’s developmental territory, FCW.

Bischoff Says TNA Considered Cutting Hardy Prior To Arrest

23

Eric Bischoff stated on this week’s episode of Monday Night Mayhem that some TNA Wrestling officials wanted to cut ties with Matt Hardy prior to his arrest on August 20, 2011 for driving while intoxicated. Hardy, who was on suspension with the organization at the time, had his contract immediately terminated following the arrest.

“I think it was a great decision by TNA to release Matt Hardy. I honestly thought Matt was a questionable talent to begin with, not that he didn’t have any value. In my opinion, there was a liability there, and it manifested itself,” Bischoff said.

“We’ve see how Matt’s issues and the baggage he brought to TNA evolved in the last few months, and there a few people that wanted to pull the plug on Matt Hardy sooner than they did. I think once TNA made the decision to pull the plug, I was quite honestly happy about it and thought it was long overdue.”

New Details On Jeff Hardy’s 2009 Drug Arrest

18

North Carolina’s FayObserver.com has picked up the story of Jeff Hardy pleading guilty to three drug felonies earlier today and has provided new details regarding Hardy’s 2009 arrest.

Assistant District Attorney Warren McSweeney said police raided Jeff Hardy’s home on 9/11/09 after employees at a Fayetteville FedEx distribution center called police about a suspicious package. The package was addressed to Hardy from a fan in Florida. It contained a Maxwell House coffee can filled with 262 prescription hydrocodone pain killers.

Police resealed the package and had the pills delivered to Hardy’s home. When Hardy accepted the package, Moore County sheriff’s deputies raided the house and found other drugs as well.

Hardy’s lawyer, James Van Camp said today that Hardy got involved with the pills “to cope with the pain and damage to his body that he endured as a professional wrestler.”

As previously reported, Hardy is currently participating in a drug abuse treatment program.

Every item in my line addresses the steps you need to make a lifestyle shift. Stratusphere Living is a lifestyle,” Stratus says.

After a decade long career in the industry, fitness fans are sure to be ‘stratusfied’ with the release of Trish’s first-ever workout DVD. Using yoga to rehabilitate a back injury, and drawing on her diverse fitness background, Trish was inspired to create a total mindbody workout that combines the benefits of strength training and yoga.

The Stratusphere Living brand will also be making its debut on a local and global scale via the popular IT Lounge gifting suite, to be held during the Toronto International Film Festival this year. Held from September 8 to 14, the celebrity gifting suite will be located at the NKPR Adelaide Street, Toronto location. Stratusphere Living’s presence in the Lounge will help raise funds and awareness for local and global charities, Artists for Peace and Justice and Camp Oochigeas.

Stratusphere Living will be available at London Drugs and Sportchek this September, followed by Sears, GNC, and Home Outfitters in early October.

Kurt Angle Says He’s Signed A New 3-Year Deal With TNA

17

During an interview with Movieline.com earlier this week at the Los Angeles premiere of his new film Warrior, Kurt Angle announced that he recently signed a new 3-year deal with TNA Wrestling.

When asked about how much he was acting prior to entering the world of professional wrestling, Angle said:

“I was taking classes and I was getting very serious about it. I was also sportscasting — I was a sportscaster in Pittsburgh for Fox, just trying to get in front of the camera a little bit. Then pro wrestling came around and I took a shot at that, and I didn’t realize I was going to become that good.”

He continued, “I made a lot of money, thank God, and I stuck with it, but every time I had a movie where my name would come up for some reason, I wasn’t allowed to do it due to scheduling reasons in the WWE. So with TNA, they give me the opportunity to go ahead and do movies and if it conflicts with the schedule they work around it. It’s a much better situation for me. So I actually signed a new three-year deal today with TNA. I’m going to stick with TNA.

Angle also spoke about following in The Rocks footsteps from WWE to Hollywood, the MMA industry and more.

Big Update On Rock & Cena’s Feud, Rock-Survivor Series

12

As we’ve been reporting here on SEScoops.com this week, it’s being advertised in New York City that The Rock will be “returning to action” at WWE Survivor Series in November.

According to one of our WWE sources, contrary to what’s being advertised, The Rock is not currently scheduled to wrestle at Survivor Series. Expect The Rock to be heavily involved in the show and somehow get physically involved with John Cena, but he won’t be wrestling.

WWE is treating Survivor Series as the “kickoff” to the build towards WrestleMania 28. It’s been stated in recent months by both The Rock and Vince McMahon that Rock will be appearing at “several” upcoming WWE PPVs – including the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber.

The Figure Four Weekly Newsletter reports that there has been talk of doing a best-of-three series between The Rock and John Cena. It’s not official yet, but there’s a chance we’ll see Rock vs. Cena at WrestleMania and then two more post-Mania PPVs, including SummerSlam 2012 in Los Angeles.
