ROH Best In The World 2011 iPPV Taping Results

18

SEScoops.com reader Patrick Peralta sent in the following results from Ring of Honor’s Best In The World 2011 iPPV taping from New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom over the weekend. Based on several live reports we’ve read from fans who were at the show, it was said to be one of ROH’s best shows in a long time and the company appears to be in capable hands under the ownership of the Sinclair Broadcasting Group. Here are the results:

* Match 1: Tommaso Ciampa (w/the Embassy) vs Colt Cabana. Winner Tommaso Ciampa

* Match 2: Jay Lethal vs “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett (w/”Brutal” Bob Evans). winner Jay Lethal. Fans went wild for Lethal’s return they chanted welcome back and Randy Savage chants

* Match 3: Homicide vs Rhyno. winner Homicide. After the match Prince Nana (manager) attacked Homicide who beat Nana down then Homicide turned into a Gore by Rhyno who sent him into a table in the corner of the ring.

* Match 4: Mike Elgin (w/Truth Martini) vs Steve Corino (w/Jimmy Jacobs). Winner Mike Elgin. Before the match Corino did a promo talking about how he and Jacobs had turned their lives around and he wanted to introduce a man he wanted to help change his life around. He introduced “Mr. Wrestling” Kevin Steen who had not been seen since losing a loser leaves ROH match to El Generico at ROH: Final Battle Dec 2010. Steen came out on the upper deck of the venue and the fans went nuts, Cornette let him stay as long as he stayed in his seat. After the match both Corino and Jacobs were beat down by Elgin and Martini, Steen made the save and Cornette and security came out. Corino begged them not to do anything. Steen took the mic said he had one thing to say he said “screw ROH” then he attacked Jacobs and Corino and security came in and carried Steen away while ROH staff tended to Corino. Cornette made a promise on his mother’s grave that Steen would never return to ROH.

* Match 5: El Generico vs “Fallen Angel” Chrisopher Daniels (w/Truth Martini) for the ROH TV championship. Winner and NEW ROH TV Championship El Generico

* Match 6: Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin, champs) vs. The Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli) vs. The All Night Express (Kenny King & Rhett Titus) vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe for the ROH Tag Team Championship. Winners and still ROH Tag Team Champions, Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team. After the match the Briscoes attacked the WGTT while the KOW just watched from the corners. The ANX made the save.

* Match 7: Davey Richards vs. Eddie Edwards (champ) for the ROH World Heavyweight Championship. Winner & NEW ROH World HeavyWeight Champion Davey Richards. After the match Davey Richards gave an emotional speech thanking fans and his training camp and Eddie Edwards for sticking by him thru good and bad both in wrestling and in his personal life. He said they were his only family. He gave a big thanks to his grandparents who raised him as he looked to the heavens and did a “Rocky” type salute to them saying he did it.

Bret Hart’s WWE TV Return, DiBiase-Rhodes, Heat On Leavine

14

– Bret Hart is rumored to be returning to WWE television in the near future. The Hitman is booked for several upcoming SmackDown shows and creative is discussing possible storyline ideas for him.

– There has been talk of the USA Network airing a new ‘preview’ show on Monday nights prior to WWE RAW, similar to what the NFL does with its pre-game show for Monday Night Football.

– Despite several botched attempts at establishing Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase as a viable tag team, WWE officials are said to be committed to getting them over on the SmackDown brand. The dynamic between The Miz and Alex Riley is being seen as a blueprint for what WWE will do with DiBiase and Rhode, with DiBiase doing Rhodes’ dirty work for now and then eventually turning babyface and feuding with Rhodes.

– Tough Enough winner Andy Leavine got screamed at backstage at RAW the night of the Tough Enough season finale. A top WWE official ripped into Leavine for about five minutes due to the way he didn’t sell the slap from Mr. McMahon and Steve Austin’s Stone Cold Stunner. Leavine was told that he’s a piece of crap who doesn’t respect the business and will never amount to anything in WWE.  As previously reported, Leavine will be heading to developmental to sharpen his skills in the coming months. Considering the heat on him, it will be interesting to see if he ever makes it out of FCW.

Andy Threatens Luke On Twitter, Jillian Comments On Return

33

— A fan on Twitter informed Tough Enough winner Andy Leavine of critical comments runner-up Luke Robinson made during a recent interview. Robinson stated last week that Leavine used pity to win the contest by saying he has children to take care of.

Leavine wrote to Robinson on Twitter, “All the BS aside its over now. You want to run your mouth? Remember if you make it here-I’m already in the locker room.”

— Former WWE Divas Champion Jillian Hall participated in her first match since leaving WWE on June 18 at an independent show in Orlando, Florida. She reveals in an interview with Diva-Dirt.com that she was not completely ready to return to the squared circle and was nervous as a result.

“My nerves came from me not knowing if I was ready to be in a ring again,” Hall explains. “When I left WWE, there was a part of me that truly thought that chapter of my life was over. I had turned down many requests to do a match before taking the Orlando show because it just didn’t feel right and on top of that my body wasn’t and still isn’t 100%. You wouldn’t think it, but it was a very emotional day for me.”

She continued, “I was nervous up until the very moment I walked out that night. I wasn’t sure how the people would react to me. When I walked out and turned “Jillian” up, it felt very natural like I had done it yesterday. I was literally afraid I was going to throw up when I took my first bump, but that, also, was very natural. The crowd accepted me even though I wasn’t 100% and that’s something I really appreciated.”

The interview is available here.

JR Blog: Chavo’s Release, WWE’s Bret Hart – HBK DVD Project

3

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read over at JRsBarBQ.com. JR spoke about another of topics this week, including Chavo Guerrero’s release from WWE, Jesse Ventura, being honored by the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, whether WWE will ever draw more fans than they did for WrestleMania 3 and more. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Chavo Guerrero’s WWE Release: “Sorry to hear of Chavo Guerrero leaving WWE after many years with the company. I don’t know the details but from what I read Chavo asked for his release and wanted to explore other options. Chavo is a talented guy who comes from a regal, wrestling family who I respect greatly. Chavo strikes me as the type of wrestler who has given his post wrestling career adequate thought and even though Chavo can and likely will continue to wrestle, one can never over stay their welcome inside the ring and everyone has to have an exit strategy at some point.”

Whether WWE Will Ever Break WrestleMania 3’s Attendance Record: “Will the WM3 attendance record ever be broken? In my opinion, yes. It could happen in a variety of venues but specifically, in my eyes, it will be when WWE has a Wrestlemania in Cowboys Stadium in Dallas which could accommodate close to 100,000 for the event. With DFW being an American Airlines hub and Love Field being a Southwest Airlines hub, getting to Dallas from virtually any where in the world is doable. Of course, how well any event does or doesn’t do is always dependent on the main event attractions.”

Participating In The Shawn Michaels-Bret Hart DVD Project: “The HBK/Hitman DVD will be released worldwide this October and I have high expectations for the project. The two legendary, WWE stars sat side by side during the shoot facing yours truly who asked them a battery of questions … To be able to sit and talk to two WWE Hall of Famers such as Michaels and Hart who did have a bona fide rivalry at one time but also respected the other’s work was a privilege for me. I’m honored to have been assigned this project and hope that it lives up to the expectations we all have for it. I know that both Shawn and Bret were very happy with the day.”

Ross added, “I’ll tell you this, it takes a lot of courage and character to be honest to the core on these types of productions and Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were definitely honest, open, emotional, and had some compelling things to say. My respect for both men, which was already immense, was elevated even higher after this DVD taping.

JR has much more to say about the Michaels-Hart DVD, which you can read at his site.

Batista Joins Twitter: Trashes “WWE PG” & Talks Weight Loss

19

Former WWE star Batista has launched an account on Twitter via twitter.com/Real_DBautista. The account has been confirmed by his official website, Demon-Wrestling.com. He posted an introductory message explaining what he’s been up to since parting ways with WWE last year.

“So I’m giving in to my rule of NO social networking because I promised my boy Josh Rafferty that i would……so here we go!” Batista wrote. “First off!!!!! NO HATERS ALLOWED!!! I hate HATERS!! I wish all haters a Nick Diaz style ass woopin! go somewhere else!

“This is what i’ve done since I left WWE a year ago….3 movies, first one “House of the Rising Sun” being released next month. riding low with my homies…. THE IMPERIALS!!!! Los Angeles chapter….sup Francisco,Junior, El Presidente Tomas..(we miss you Jesse) training my ass off at Gracie Fighter Pleasant Hill Cali, Gracie Fighter Tampa Fl., and Powerhouse Gym in Downtown Tampa. ….and chillin with Sarah : )”

Batista also says he plans on fighting no matter what.

He wrote, “So I’ll repeat myself because haters are not only losers but they also seem to be illiterate! NO FUCKING HATERS! no negative chi here!!!! and God willing…YES I will be fighting. even if i have to walk my old ass to the cage with a cane!”

Batista then criticizes WWE’s “PG” product, writing, “I’m the biggest wrestling fan there is..which is why I’m boycotting the PG BS! They’re selling watered down art bro. Kills me.”

Batista also responded to queries regarding his recent weight loss. He says he gave up weights and eliminated certain foods from his diet.

“Gave up the weights, gluten, red meat, pork….down to 260…feel great,” he wrote. “Leaner than ever though. I feel great at this weight.”

Hardy Asks Fans If They Requested A Refund From TNA Event

32

It was reported earlier this week that Matt Hardy was suspended by TNA Wrestling due to continuously arriving late to live events and posting a video online of himself urging Jeff Hardy to stun a woman with a taser, “among other reasons.” It was noted to Hardy on Twitter that a group of thirty asked for refunds when it was announced that he would not be on hand for Friday’s live event in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Instead, they were given free merchandise.

Hardy wrote, “I thank those peeps who stood up for me. I haven’t done anything wrong.. And the “Fans Voices Should Matter”-don’t ever forget that!”

He continued, “If you asked for a refund in Ft. Wayne cuz I wasn’t there, tweet me your story and I will RT it.. And I thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

Hardy also continues to take issue with wrestling websites that publish inaccurate stories.

“As I said earlier, I have no more beef with the net. They’re people tryin to make a living off of the business that we are the lifeblood of,” Hardy wrote. “With that said, you certainly can’t believe everything you read. There’s always details to situations that they have no clue about and therefore report incorrectly.”

Chavo Guerrero Comments On WWE Release

31

WWE announced this morning that the organization has come to terms on the release SmackDown Superstar Chavo Guerrero. The third generation grappler commented on his departure from the organization and revealed that he had requested to be let go due to unhappiness with his position.

Guerrero wrote, “Yes, it’s true. My release is the big news I was talking about. But let’s get something straight. I asked for my release. I was just tired of not being used correctly. Just cuz u can make other ppl look good, doesn’t mean they should just have u lose to them. The same thing happened to Eddie. After being champ, they still had him working mid card status. Being a Guerrero, we’ve been taught since diapers to get the most out of ppl & matches. It’s our gift, but also our curse. WWE has always used us to make other ppl look good.

“It all comes down to being happy. I was not happy in WWE anymore. I had a smile on my face last night though when I got my release though! :) now it’s time for me to start being a Guerrero again, and start kicking ass again, be able to tell stories in the ring like u know we can. :) Win or lose I will never go back to the place WWE put me in. I will never go back to being under utilized and watching ppl who suck get bigger “pushes” than me!

Thank u to all of u who stuck by me and kept reminding me, I was better than that! :) stay tuned. Big things coming!! Now I will really be able to entertain u! :) like me or hate me, 1 thing I have always tried to do is entertain u and give u fans your $ worth. Even if my hands were tied most of the time. I love u all and can’t wait for the future!! So happy. :)”

He continued, “Hey, u guys have me trending World wide!! Thanks. I should of quit a long time ago! I know it may sound like it, but I’ve got no hard feelings toward the WWE. I’ve just been unhappy there for a long time & if you have watched the show, u will no why. I made a lot of money, but I’m better than just cashing a paycheck. I wish no hard feelings toward the WWE and want to see them and all my friends there succeed! I love wrestling & want nothing but wrestling to get better & bigger. U fans deserve nothing but a great show and great stories& athleticism for staying so true to wrestling. It’s in my blood & always will be. :)

“People asking what I’m gonna do now..I’m gonna stay home and be a Dad. :) going to watch my son’s football practice now. :) Happy!”

MAILBAG: Which WWE Referee Hired a Hitman To Kill Himself?

24

SEScoops Mailbag for June 24th

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: Why does WWE think they can feed our head with things like we don’t remember the past? Not even 3 months ago, Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole were in this personal feud that resulted in 2 PPV matches. Now, they sit beside each other as if [nothing ever happened]. I’m also hearing about Mick Foley returning to WWE. Some say he should be revealed as the anonymous GM. So during his tenure with TNA, Mick has been keeping up with WWE that much to feel the need to call shots from home or on the road and e-mail constantly to that stupid laptop with the script being shown on the keyboard. – Terrell

A: I agree, it’s completely ridiculous to have Cole and Lawler sit next to one another like nothing ever happened. Lawler will make a crack here and there that reminds us he still does not like Cole, but as annoying as Cole is and if he made remarks about my dead mother, I wouldn’t be so quick to forgive and forget. As far as Mick Foley goes, I don’t see what the problem is. WWE goes out of its way to not acknowledge TNA, or any wrestling promotion, on TV (WCW and ECW being the exceptions, but they’re both dead and owned by Vince now). Remember when Christian returned to WWE? Funny how he was gone for three years and they never mentioned he not only was wrestling on another national network, but was an NWA champion as well. It’s just how they operate. They have their own little world (err, Universe). So if Foley were to return as the Raw GM, it’s perfectly logical to assume that yes, in fact, he has been doing nothing but lounging on his sofa, stuffing his face with Doritos and sending e-mails to Michael Cole.

Q: I remember a few years back when there was a series of SmackDown After Show Webisodes on WWE.com where Josh Matthews would interview the referee that got injured in a Hell in the Cell match by Triple H. It went for a good 6 weeks where the ref would try to kill himself in various ways (Drowning in a fishtank, Electrocution, Rat Poison) and Josh would talk him out of it. On the final webisode, the ref “shot” himself off camera in a bar. Do you remember this ref’s name and do you know where he is now? – Anonymous

A: The referee in question was Tim White, who had been with WWE for close to 20 years before suffering a shoulder injury in 2002 that effectively ended his career. He tried to officiate matches after that, but his shoulder kept popping out and he retired for good at that point. Since his WWE release in 2009, I’m not sure what he’s been up to, though he has been back to WWE shows and may be assisting in some backstage capacity. By the way, those skits you are referring to were part of a series called “Lunchtime Suicide” where White, depressed over how his career had ended, also tried to off himself by slitting his wrists with a razor blade, drinking a substance in a lab laced with Mad Cow Disease and hiring a hitman to kill himself.

Q: Did D-Lo Brown catch any heat in the company and/or fines for the in-ring accident that left Darren Drozdov a quadriplegic? Also, do you think the accident somewhat effected the star that Brown could have been in WWE? What I mean here is, if the accident never happened, do you think Brown had what it took to have been a main event star? – Jeremy

A: I don’t recall any stories of Brown getting punished for what happened to Droz. He slipped on a running powerbomb out of the corner. It was a freak accident. He carried enough guilt on his shoulders that, if anything, people felt sorry for him. Had the incident not taken place, I don’t believe D-Lo would have been WWE champion. He was never pushed as a main eventer and, frankly, I never saw him in that role. He attained great success as a mid-card act, holding the Intercontinental and European titles simultaneously at one point, and I think that was the role he was best suited for.

Q: I’m an Undertaker fan and I know his time is almost up. Do you think the gimmick should stop with Taker or be handed down? – Vick Pick

A: There can be only one Undertaker. Can you imagine the backlash if they tried to pass it on to someone else? Kane is the only one that would really make sense (you know, bound by blood with Taker and all), but he’s already 40+ years old and has built a legacy for his own character over the last 14 years. It would be unfair both to Undertaker and the person trying to fill his shoes to put anyone else in that role.

Q: Since TNA changed the name of Impact, slogan, and posted videos of the wrestlers talking about “why wrestling matters” and talk about providing more wrestling, how come there has not been a significant increase in the total time of wrestling in the show? – Rory B.

A: In fairness, I do think there has been more wrestling over the last two episodes. Plus, that parking lot brawl between Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett showed an intensity and realism that we need to see more of in wrestling. That said, the whole “Wrestling Matters” campaign was never intended to be anything more than a rebranding of the show. It’s a farce. You still have Vince Russo, who hates wrestling, writing their TV show and until that changes, you’re never really going to see consistency in the product. What I mean by that is, even if there is more wrestling right now and it continues leading up to Destination X, I can guarantee that after that, they will fall back into old habits. If you have followed TNA for any length of time, you already know this.

Q: What do you think is the most hurtful move in WWE? – Frank G.

A: Trying to get yourself over. Oh wait, you mean hurtful PHYSICAL move in WWE? More than a few men have had their noses busted on the receiving end of CM Punk’s GTS (which he “borrowed” from KENTA in Japan) and I reckon if he was to really go full force with the move, it would cause quite a bit of damage. Nobody likes getting hit in the face, let alone with a knee. Beyond that, the Five Knuckle Shuffle and Santino’s Cobra are pretty intimidating, too.

Q: Do you know why WWE got rid of the Cruiserweight title and do you believe that it will ever come back? I know it was pretty much worthless after they gave it to a guy who was smaller then the physical belt itself, but it would be nice for it to be reinstated, especially with the planned introduction of more luchadores into WWE. – Ben

A: They got rid of it because they were never fully behind it in the first place. And by “they,” I mean Vince McMahon. To him, it was just a bunch of small guys wrestling a dangerous style, and when you make them conform to WWE style and slow them down, they lose whatever appeal they may have had. WWE is definitely going after more talent from Mexico, but if you think they’re going to go on TV and wrestle lucha-style matches, prepare to be disappointed. They won’t even allow Sin Cara to use his old La Mistica submission, which is a hell of a lot easier to perform than his C4 finisher off the top rope and every bit as visually impressive.

Q: I was wondering if there was a reason why Bret Hart wasn’t booked to win his first WWF championship at a major PPV event? I recently saw the Hart/Flair match from 1992 and remembered that it took place on Prime Time Wrestling. Was there a rush to get the title on Bret at the time? – Michael A.

A: I don’t believe the match actually aired on Prime Time (though there was a PTW banner visibly hanging in the arena), but rather, was taped for some Coliseum Video releases. I know I have a video called “Smack’em Whack’em” from 1993 that has the match on there. As far as why Bret got the title, I believe it was rushed onto him because Vince McMahon was adamant about getting the belt on someone new who wasn’t a lightning rod for steroids, which is not to say Ric Flair was abusing steroids at that time or looked like a bodybuilder. But, WWE did get real serious in a hurry around that period about getting clean and Flair was part of the old guard. Within a month of Bret winning the title, the company also fired Davey Boy Smith, who dropped the IC title to Shawn Michaels only two months after his big victory at Wembley Stadium, and the Ultimate Warrior, which forced them to bring back Mr. Perfect early as Warrior was slated to team with Randy Savage at the Survivor Series.

Q: I just saw a Fruit Loops commercial where Toucan Sam was chased by a yeti. This yeti looked somewhat modeled off of Randy Savage. The color streams in its hair reminded me of his outlandish attire. The fur on the yeti’s face was drawn like a full beard. It even had a pair of Savage-esque goggles. And it was a yeti so he was muscular. I watched the commercial from the kitchen, so on the off chance he sounded like Savage, I didn’t hear it. – Ryan B.

A: This isn’t really a question, but this commercial is a fail without Tony Schiavone in the background screaming, “IT’S THE YET-TAY!!!” Sometimes, I really do miss WCW.

Keep those questions coming to [email protected] and remember to include your name!

Big News On WWE’s New Bret Hart-HBK DVD Project

22

lYou may have heard some buzz here on the site that WWE is working on a special DVD project that’s set to be released this fall. Jim Ross dropped a few hints on Twitter, calling the project “groundbreaking” and saying he was very fortunate to be a part of it. To follow up on this story – it appears the project will be an in-depth profile on the rocky relationship between WWE Hall of Famers Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels.

Jeff Jarrett Talks About TNA’s Profitability & Critical Fanbase

19

During a recent interview with AsTheWorldTurnsLeft.com, TNA founder Jeff Jarrett spoke about a number of topics, including TNA working with Mexico’s AAA promotion, his relationship with Kurt Angle and much more. One of the more newsworthy topic discussed was the business side of TNA and whether the company is profitable yet. Jarrett responded with a resounding, “Yes, absolutely.” When asked why there are still so many questions about the company’s financial stability, Jarrett said:

“The thing is, I totally respect that fact. Because as a businessperson, you look at the odds of any startup business lasting more than five years, the odds are extremely against it. And in the early years, no, we weren’t making money, and that was a completely legitimate question. But as time has gone on, we’re seen in more than 100 countries worldwide, translated into 14 languages, JAKKS with our action figures, our online presence, touring over 100 events a year, internationally I think we’ve gone to the United Kingdom four times with a tour. It’s a great time to be in TNA and continue to expand.”

Jarrett was then asked about the outspoken part of TNA’s audience that criticizes the product and never seems to be happy with what the company does. Jarrett responded:

“I’ll say this: Wrestling fans, you have to take the good and bad of [them]. Because No.1, they’re highly critical of everything you do; they like to be Monday morning quarterbacks. But that’s all part of professional wrestling. It sort of makes up the uniqueness of our business. Along with that, I’m fine with them criticizing us and saying we should do this or do that. But from a business side of things, like you’re saying, when misinformation gets out, it’s not conducive for anybody when you put out total mistruths. But, hey, we’ve learned to accept it and move on. We worry about our bottom line, and let the chips fall where they may.”

PETA Video: Daniel Bryan Urges Kids To Go Vegan

38

Animal rights group PETA released the following press release and video starring WWE star Daniel Bryan, who urges children to eat a vegan diet:

WWE SUPERSTAR DANIEL BRYAN SLAPS THE LEBELL LOCK ON VEGAN STEREOTYPES IN NEW PETA2 AD
Master of Technical Wrestling Says That His Vegan Diet Keeps Him in Prime Fighting Shape

Las Vegas — “As a WWE Superstar, staying healthy and having a lot of energy helps me succeed in the ring—that’s why I choose to be a vegan,” says Daniel Bryan in his brand-new pro-vegan ad for peta2, PETA’s youth division. At 198 muscular pounds, Bryan is in the best shape of life—and he says it’s all because of his plant-based diet.

In an exclusive Q&A with peta2, Bryan explained that chronic health problems since childhood led his doctor to suggest that Bryan go vegan. Now, a year later, Bryan says, “[T]his whole year, my energy levels have been great. … I’m stronger right now than I’ve ever been … I’m dead-lifting more than I ever have before.”

And Bryan’s diet isn’t just good for his health—it’s also good for the environment. “[I]t only makes sense to save the planet that you stop eating meat because it … produces so much carbon dioxide,” he explains. “[T]here’s not enough resources for everybody to eat meat.”

Why else is a vegan diet the diet of champions? Vegans can get all the protein that they need from plant-based foods without the artery-clogging saturated animal fats and cholesterol found in meat. The consumption of meat and other animal-derived products has been strongly linked to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. In addition to greenhouse-gas emissions, meat production is also a leading cause of water pollution and land degradation. And, of course, the best way to fight the cruelty of factory farms and slaughterhouses is to kick the meat habit.

Daniel Bryan joins a long list of athletes—including Mac Danzig, Jake Shields, and Rich Roll—who have teamed up with peta2 to promote a vegetarian diet.
