Chris Jericho Discusses New Book, Plans To Reinvent Himself

1

Show: Interactive Wrestling Radio
Guest: Chris Jericho
Date: 2/23/11
Your Hosts: Patrick Kelley, James Walsh, & Nick Noel
Transcript By: Patrick Kelley

Back in 2005, Chris Jericho joined us for the very first time. That interview was a landmark interview for us as it was the first interview that saw James solo from his former co-host and that interview was used as a demo to land a spot on “The Blaze” 1260 AM where The Interactive Interview, now Interactive Wrestling Radio, got perhaps its most exposure ever.

Fast forward 6 years, we’re still here! And, Chris Jericho is back with us for another round. This time, we are splitting from our former show station which we were on for over 2 years. So, it seems like when Chris Jericho comes knocking, the Epicenter starts shaking things up, puns fully intended.

To listen, visit www.WrestlingEpicenter.com and click either the Interviews tab on the left or the link below the cover of Chris Jericho’s new book on the right. A WMA file and a YouTube video can be downloaded to hear this great interview. If you like this interview, please check out our Store/Merchandise section and help keep us going 100% free!

CHRIS JERICHO

– Jericho joins TII once again to plug his new book “Undisputed” which chronicles his time in the WWE, picking up right where the first book left off.

– Chris has fun with the hosts as he jokingly refers to Patrick sounding like a midget & James being a nerd!

– He is pleased with the early success of the book. Presales alone led to it making the New York’s Best Seller list. This leads into a lighthearted discussion about Mick Foley & whether or not Chris will make the list more times than him.

– It is also brought up that Jericho’s book was published by the same company that also published Mick Foley’s “Countdown to Lockdown” & Bret Hart’s “Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling”. Jericho was the first to work with that company, as he worked with them on his first book “A Lion’s Tale” and joked that he was “Breaking down the walls at Grand Central Publishing”

– The reason both of his books were written outside of the WWE is that they never asked him to write one. When he left originally in 2005 and was approached about doing a biography, he thought that it would be all one large biography. After realizing that he had a lot of good stories to tell, he decided to split it into two. He originally only signed the one book deal, but after the success of “A Lion’s Tale”, he got signed up to do another. He also left the door open for a third book.

– The discussion shifts towards his band Fozzy. “Undisputed” also goes into detail about the creation of the band. He has always dreamed of being both a wrestler & a musician. He has enjoyed success at both. He also comments that he’s never thought of himself as just a wrestler but as a showman and a fully rounded performer.

– He goes into his big announcement which he could not make at the time of the interview. It was later revealed that he would be the host of the Golden God Awards Show where he will also perform with Fozzy. He swore here that his announcement would NOT be wrestling related and that he will have no role to play at Wrestlemania XXVII. This also leads into Chris telling a funny story about a wrestling fan that ran into him at an airport and insisted he was going to be at the Elimination Chamber PPV.

– Working with Steamboat was a heavily talked about feud from 2009, and Jericho was very happy with how it turned out. He puts Steamboat over as a natural talent, and was amazed at how well Steamboat performed after being away for so long. Originally, the match at Wrestlemania XXV was supposed to be him against Snuka, Piper, & Valentine. He thought that match would be tough to carry, but the idea was that Jericho would face participants from the first Wrestlemania and also a Hall of Famer. Jericho then suggested Steamboat take one of the spots, and after some planning, Ricky was inducted to the Hall of Fame that year. He also says that he had matches with Ricky in Japan & South Carolina that were untelevised but “really, really good”.

– When asked about possibly suffering some of the same backlash as The Rock for “leaving” wrestling to pursue other interests, Jericho says that everything he does is something that he wants to do and he wants to grow to become the best all around performer he can be.

– When comparing the two books he’s written, he says that the positive feedback he got on “Lion’s Tale” is that it was mostly information that most people were unfamiliar with, so it was fascinating. However, with “Undisputed”, the information is very current & familiar, so fans are excited to get more details behind the stuff they’ve already seen.

– He admits to being his own worst critic and what he has written in both of his books are very honest & true to how he feels, both good & bad.

– When talking about the change of character he did in 2008, he says that it was perfectly natural for him to play. He created the character and wanted to be something completely different from what he had done before. He also notes that most heels in the WWE now are trying emulate that character. When he returns, he’ll want to reinvent his character again. “I never look back to the past”.

JR Blog: Mistico’s Debut, Batista vs. Shamrock, Cyborg

0

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

Batista vs. Ken Shamrock: “Yes I would watch a rumored Batista vs. Ken Shamrock MMA fight that is making the rounds on the ‘net. However, I’d love to see Kenny hang ’em up and simply train fighters but the name identity that Batista and Shamrock bring to the table would provide more than ample sizzle for any promoter. I’d watch this train wreck I’ll honestly admit. ”

Cyborg Santos To WWE? “Is Cris Cyborg leaving MMA/Strikeforce to migrate to WWE? Beats the hell out of me just as she would if she chose to but it is an interesting internet rumor. Seeing more athletic, hard hitting women compete in WWE is intriguing for me as a fan. Cris Cyborg is arguably the baddest women on the planet but she would need to learn better English and the art form of pro wrestling or she would run out of opposition in WWE just as she has seemingly done in MMA. Cyborg would be huge draw on a WWE event in Brazil, for example, or so I think. ”

Sin Cara’s WWE Debut: “The Mistico name is owned by the wrestling promotion CMLL in Mexico City which is why the athletes formerly known as Mistico is now known as Sin Cara. I expect Sin Cara to debut after WM27 so as to not get lost in the Wrestlemania shuffle so to speak. Right now it’s all about WM27 and not about introducing new people. Makes sense to me.”

Wife Of Shad Gaspard Alleges Racial Profiling In Arrest

13

Shad Gaspard, who rose to fame as a member of Cryme Tyme in World Wrestling Entertainment, was arrested Saturday in Columbus, Ohio on charges of resisting arrest and obstructing official business.

Gaspard’s wife Siliana stated to TMZ.com that her husband was a victim of racial profiling by police, who arrested him for jaywalking as he was heading to the Arnold Fitness Expo. She says Gaspard submitted into a kneeling position to indicate he was not resisting, but cops nonetheless shoved his face into dirt.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett, who accompanied Gaspard, backed up his version of events on Twitter.

“Shad Gaspard arrested because a Columbus officer abuses his authority,” he wrote last night. “False jaywalking charge + attitude turns to handcuffs and tackling.”

Gaspard is pursuing an acting career after parting ways with WWE in November. He continues to wrestle as he signed with Japanese wrestling promotion Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) last month.

Former WWE Star Shad Gaspard Arrested Saturday

19

Former WWE talent Shad Gaspard was arrested Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. His wife claims he was arrested for ‘crossing the street’.

She wrote on Twitter:

“This is Shad’s wife everyone. I want to address the rumors that are going on around the Internet right now about Shad’s arrest. He was indeed arrested today, in Columbus. No use denying it. But Shad did nothing wrong, he was trying to attend the Arnold Classic, and can you guys believe that the Columbus police department has nothing better to do than arrest him for crossing the street????!! That’s what they got him for “pedestrian in roadway” I think we should all stand up and be heard! Too many cops abusing their authority!! Apparently they even decided that it was necessary to tackle him…. I am very disappointed in those who “serve and protect” right now.”

She later added that Gaspard’s bail has been posted and a lawyer has been hired. She noted that footage of Gaspard ‘being mistreated and arrested for nothing’ will be surface online today.

WWE Officials Deny Cris “Cyborg” Santos Negotiation Report

0

Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports reports that World Wrestling Entertainment officials have denied an online report that Strikeforce Women’s Middleweight Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos is negotiating to join the promotion.

An article on the Brazilian MMA-based Tatame.com said Santos and her fighter-husband, Evangelista Santos, were at a WWE event in California two weeks ago and that she was offered a contract.

Santos has a “champion’s clause” in her contract, which binds a champion to the promotion until they lose. Because of the clause, Santos would need the permission of Strikeforce to appear in a WWE ring.

The story may be contract posturing, since Santos has not fought since a June 29 victory over Jan Finney due to negotiations for a new deal.

“We’re negotiating Cristiane’s contract,” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. “We hope to finalize something soon.”

Coker indicated he first heard about the report Thursday night and didn’t know if it was serious or just an attempt to leverage the current talks.

MAILBAG: Mickie James, Trish Stratus and a Cold Shower?

17

SEScoops Mailbag for March 4th

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: I was wondering why WWE always visits the smaller Allstate Arena when it visits Chicago, rather than the larger United Center? It’s the biggest arena in the United States and can easily seat nearly 6,000 more fans for a wrestling event for a capacity of 23,000. The Allstate Arena only gets 17,000 when extra seating is made available. Chicago is always a huge draw for WWE and I have always wondered [why they do] this. – Alex

A: WWE ratings and overall interest are on the rise with the return of The Rock and the buildup to WrestleMania. However, up until the last two weeks or so, their house show business continues to struggle. Chicago is no exception to this. When they are able to do so, WWE will run the smaller venue because they’re likely not selling out the bigger arena. It’s just a sign of the times.

Q: Assuming HBK gets involved with the Triple H/Undertaker storyline, how would you feel if Taker was screwed over by Michaels? I can’t see the point; WWE has spent years building up this undefeated streak and Taker has gained a lot of respect along the way. Don’t you think it would be disrespectful for Michaels to screw him over and have the DX duo telling him to “suck it” as he lies defeated in the ring? [Thing is,] I don’t know how else you could end the streak. – Chris M.

A: It’s a work, brother. If Michaels were to screw Taker and dance on his dead carcass, it’s hardly a sign of disrespect. That said, there would be absolutely no point to this whatsoever. Unless HBK agrees to come to back and wrestle another match against the dead man, which is not going to happen (nor should it, Taker may wither away to dust any day now), what is gained by having him assist in ending the streak? You’d get more mileage out of having someone on the active roster, not named Triple H, do the deed and get some rub from it. Even then, it would be foolish to end the streak. It’s a great marketing gimmick for as long as Taker wants to continue wrestling and the only thing keeping his Mania matches interesting at this point, assuming you have him in there with the right opponent who fans might actually believe has a shot at beating him. Triple H is not that guy, but John “Super” Cena would be.

Q: It has been a while, and I mean a while, since I’ve seen a SWEET Intercontinental title match. If I recall, the (then) Johnny Nitro vs. Jeff Hardy saga was a nail biter! But now, we have a title match here, a little confrontation there and worst of all, we got dudes like ‘Ziggles’ with the title. I can hear the ratings drop. So, my question is, can we please get Vince to see that he’s got young dudes with their thumbs up their asses and so much wasted talent in the back begging for a fight? – Adrian R., Trinidad

A: Let’s be honest, the Intercontinental title hasn’t really meant anything for about a decade now. The last great IC title feud featured a series of fantastic battles between Benoit and Jericho in 2000. The fact that from 2003-2008, there was not a SINGLE match for the title at WrestleMania speaks volumes. There’s a plethora of great, young talent who, if given the chance, could put on some classic matches that help build up the value of the belt (oops, sorry Vince). Kofi Kingston is a great babyface, but having 632 matches with Jack Swagger when neither guy is really pushed as anything special won’t accomplish that goal.

Q: Do [you realize] that when commentating, Booker T is kind of trying to make mid-carders look strong? – Mohammad

A: What a novel concept. Having your announcer go on TV and make the talent in the ring look good instead of going into business for yourself and making them seem completely inferior. The fact that they have Booker, a color guy (no pun intended), out there doing this while their primary play-by-play voice tears down talent at every opportunity (calling them boring, fat and nerdy among other gems) just shows how ass backwards that company operates when it comes to announcing.

Q: Any idea what’s going on with [Awesome] Kong? She’s been with WWE a while now and there is no sign of her! – Owen Hamilton

A: No sign of her in Florida either, but that’s a good sign. That means she may hit the main roster any day now. Far more people end up in FCW and flounder there for months before (and even if) they are brought up to TV. With the rumors of MMA female fighter Cyborg Santos possibly signing with WWE, I wouldn’t mind seeing both women beat the hell out of one another, or team up to wipe out the rest of the Divas division.

Q: Do you think that there will be a draft, and if so, when? Or do you see the brand extension coming to an end? Thanks! – Rachel

A: In the past, draft specials have been three hours in length. With Tough Enough premiering the night after WrestleMania and stretching for 10 weeks, that creates a weekly 3-hour block of WWE programming, and I take that to mean no draft until at least the summer. I don’t see the brand extension coming to an end, but I don’t see the need for a draft either. Why bother when we see Smackdown stars on Raw every week anyway? To steal a phrase from Chris Jericho’s first book, the comedy never ends. Just the mere thought of having a draft now is laughable.

Q: I just wanted to ask how do Buried Alive matches work? Do the wrestlers get buried alive or do they somehow escape? – Adam

A: There is a side door that allows for the person being buried to escape unharmed. If they were actually buried alive, I don’t think they could hold their breath for that long, nor do I think the weight of all that dirt would do their internal organs any favors.

Q: Do you think WWE will do what TNA did and give the Divas tag team belts? – Charles

A: They won’t and they NEVER should. As it is, those belts in TNA are overkill. I mean, they released one half of their Knockouts tag champs while she still had the title! What does that tell you about how well they are valued? Hell, WWE should probably just retire their existing tag belts, as well. Cut the dead weight.

Q: Why doesn’t WWE use the canvas and/or the padded barricades for advertisements, as the UFC and other organizations do? – Gavin

A: This would be a great idea. WCW did this many times for their PPV shows, often promoting Slim Jim as a sponsor. UFC, as you mentioned, does it all the time. Then again, I’m not sure how well-received a giant Kmart logo on the mat would be. On occasion, WWE has branded their event logo on their canvas, as they did at WrestleMania 12 back in 1996. I mention this because I actually own a piece of that canvas.

Q: Back in 2006, when Trish Stratus was with Mickie James, there was a backstage segment where Trish was in the shower and Mickie took her towel. When Trish went to get it, it was gone and she stuck her head out and asked Mickie for it. Mickie told Trish to come and get it, then Trish stepped out and Mickie said wow Trish, nice boobs. Did Mickie actually see Trish’s boobs when she came out of the shower? – Keith

A: What a disturbing question. Sadly, I wasn’t there, so I have no idea what Mickie actually saw. Now if you’ll excuse me, YouTube and I need some quiet time alone.

Keep those questions coming to [email protected] and remember to include your name!

Trish Stratus Reveals Number Of Contestants On “Tough Enough”

3

Trish Stratus sent out an email to her “Stratusphere” yoga studio clients regarding her whereabouts. The former WWE Women’s Champion says she has not been at her Toronto based yoga studio as of late because she is in Los Angeles, California filming WWE’s Tough Enough. She will be appearing as the program’s female trainer and mentor. Stratus notably reveals that the show will feature fourteen contestants (the first three seasons featured thirteen) and that she’s on a personal mission to have them and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin give yoga a try.

Here is her message:

Have you noticed something is missing from the studio… me!

Well, you may not have noticed but I have been in Los Angeles filming a new TV show! I have been asked to join host Stone Cold Steve Austin as the female trainer/mentor for 14 contestants all competing for the chance to become the next WWE Superstar or Diva. WWE is bringing back the show Tough Enough, which is set to debut Mondays at 8pm EST starting April 4. It has been quite the experience out here, the kids are giving their everything and boy are we dishing it out to them!

For any of you familiar with my former career – the WWE world, I am joined by Booker T and Bill DeMott and we are kicking these kids’ butts into shape – I, of course have been introducing them to yoga! And I have a personal mission to try to get Stone Cold too to give yoga a try! I’ll keep you updated on that.”

Stratus added yesterday on Twitter that she had the Tough Enough contestants do yoga. However, it was not her brand of relaxing “Stratusphere” yoga as she says they were left shaking and sweating.

Update On Cyborg’s Negotiations With WWE, Phoenix Reacts

4

News broke last night that sources close to Strikeforce Women’s Middleweight Champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos indicate the Brazilian mixed martial artist is in negotiations with World Wrestling Entertainment to permanently join the promotion. In an update on the situation, BloodyElbow.com reports that according to a source, talks are in the “advanced” stage as a deal could soon be reached. However, the MMA news site also speculates that those affiliated with Cyborg could be using the claims for leverage with Strikeforce to have a fight scheduled.

Santos has not been offered a fight since her June 26, 2010 match against Jan Finney. It is largely assumed the promotion has been unable to find any willing participants over the course of the past nine months.

Meanwhile, former WWE Women’s Champion Beth Phoenix took to Twitter to comment on the rumors of Cyborg possibly joining WWE.

She wrote, “Rumours of Chris Cyborg coming to WWE are…..Interesting…its easy to dominate in any fighting division without the Glamazon. In WWE? Prepare to humbled by yours truly.”

Jim Ross Comments On The Bret Hart – Hogan Drama

7

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross commented on the Twitter beef between Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan in the Q&A section of his JRsBarBQ.com website. Here’s what Jim Ross wrote:

“Two strong, outspoken personalities who obviously, or seemingly, don’t care for one another. Not my hill to die upon. I like Bret very much and know him much better than Hulk who I have no personal issues with whatsoever. My health and my life are both in a much better place after I detached myself from matters such as this. I read them and simply move on and consider it one day closer to college football season”

The Latest On Bret Hart & Hulk Hogan’s Twitter Beef

The war of words between WWE Hall of Famers Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan is heating up. To recap, Bret Hart was asked by one of his Twitter followers on Wednesday night what he thought about Hulk Hogan. Hart tweeted:

BkIpSPtft0jdAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC HitmanBretSHart
Hogan’s nothing but a two-faced, backstabbing, steroid freak who deserved everything he got.

It didn’t take long for Hulk Hogan to respond to those harsh words. Hogan tweeted on Thursday morning:

Listen to where Bretts speaking from,it’s funny he’s done everything he’s saying I did. HH

Bret Hart has responded to Hulk Hogan once again with the following:

BkIpSPtft0jdAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC HitmanBretSHart
@HulkHogan4Real That’s not what John Graziano thinks, dickhead.

John Graziano is the young man who was a passenger in Nick Hogan’s car during Nick’s August 2007 car wreck that left Graziano permanently brain damaged. Hulk Hogan was sued by the Graziano family and settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount of money last February.

Hulk Hogan later decided to be the bigger man in the situation and forgave Bret Hart for the comments he made.

Want to thank all the maniacs that really get it ,it feels right on track. Good night. HH
