UFC Announces Merger With WEC – Coming In January

4

UFC President Dana White has been hyping a “Major Announcement” all week that some were speculating would have something to do with Brock Lesnar’s future and his confrontation with The Undertaker at last weekend’s pay-per-view.

While Dana White did touch on the Lesnar-Undertaker confrontation during his announcement, that wasn’t the big news. This coming January, UFC will be merging with its affiliate promotion, World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).

As part of the merger, UFC will be adding two new divisions – featherweight (135 pounds) and bantamweight (145 pounds). It will also be adding the fighters from WEC’s lightweight division (155 pounds) to its own already-stacked roster.

Jose Aldo will now be recognized as the UFC Featherweight Champion and make his first title defense of the newly branded championship at UFC 125 on January 1st.

The winner of the Dominick Cruz vs. Scott Jorgensen fight at WEC 53 will officially be recognized as the UFC Bantamweight Champion. The winner of Benson Henderson vs Anthony Pettis on December 16th will face the winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard to unify the WEC and UFC lightweight titles.

Here’s Dana White’s official announcement, which includes the Lesnar-Undertaker talk:

We’re looking into this story and hope to have more details shortly.

– John Cena has not appeared at WWE live events as of late because he’s been in New Mexico filming Blood Brothers for WWE Studios.

– As we reported here earlier this month, Hollywood actor Freddy Prinze Jr. has returned to WWE’s creative team. Prinze was at Sunday’s WWE Bragging Rights pay-per-view and will be working with talent backstage producing interviews. (Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter)

12

World Wrestling Entertainment sent out the following press release today … After it was announced this week that the ban on WWE merchandise at Connecticut voting locations was lifted, WWE is now taking it a step farther and actually giving away free merchandise at the Connecticut polls..

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FREE WWE® MERCHANDISE AT CT POLLS

STAMFORD, Conn., October 28, 2010 – To celebrate the victory of restoring voters’ right to wear WWE® clothing at the polls, World Wrestling Entertainment® will be giving away WWE merchandise near select Connecticut poll locations on Election Day, this Tuesday, November 2nd.

“I can’t think of a better way for WWE fans to celebrate their constitutional rights and freedom of expression while voting than to proudly wear the WWE merchandise that Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz attempted to prohibit from the polls,” said Vince McMahon, Chairman and CEO, World Wrestling Entertainment.

Out of respect for voters from all political parties, WWE will not be handing out merchandise within 75 feet of polling locations, and merchandise will be available on a first come, first served basis.

SEScoops Mailbag: Should The Miz Cash In and Lose His MITB?

10

SEScoops Mailbag for October 28th

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: I’m a big fan of monster heels, so I’m just wondering how far the new pushes of big Zeke and Tyler Reks will go? – Southjerz856

A: Apparently, not very far for Ezekiel Jackson seeing as how he was completely left off of last Monday’s Raw show. I always thought a Terry Tate, Reebok-like reintroduction of the character (sans the football mentions) through a series of vignettes would have been a great way to get him over. The jury is still out on what they will do with him. As for Rob Zomb…ermm, I mean Tyler Reks, so long as there is a heel World champion on the Smackdown brand, he won’t be challenging for the top belt anytime soon. We also presently have a heel in Dolph Ziggler as IC champion, so scratch that off the list. I can appreciate them trying to put over new talent, but I think they put the wrong talent over when they gave him Kaval’s spot in that Bragging Rights match.

Q: I’ve been seeing things on other sites about a “silver” unified title. Why would WWE want to combine two gold championships and make it silver? Everyone knows silver is of lesser value than gold. – Ryan Begley

A: Don’t let former ECW champion Matt Hardy hear you say that. But gold is currently valued at $1,331 per ounce, so you would be correct. That said, I don’t know what sites you are referring to, but I don’t believe that was posted on SEScoops. I certainly have heard no such rumor, nor do I put much stock into it. WWE already created one silver championship and it didn’t last long before it was retired.

Q: What has Viscera been doing with himself lately? I haven’t heard anything about him since WWE released him because of his weight.

A: Nelson Frazier has been doing acting work, in addition to wrestling overseas. There’s a YouTube match floating around of him in All Japan Pro Wrestling as Big Daddy Voodoo facing off with Akebono from August that you can check out. He also has a small role in the movie “Wrong Side of Town” with Rob Van Dam and Big Dave Batista. I don’t want to give it away, but the best part of that film includes Batista, rapper Ja Rule, and a gunshot wound to the head.

Q: I don’t get HDNet and the YouTube channel I was watching ROH on was recently shut down. Would you ever consider posting results/spoilers of ROH television shows on the website and maybe even other televised wrestling shows across the globe, like AAA or CMLL? – Brock Benningfield

A: We are always open to suggestions. If there is enough demand for added coverage of ROH, AAA or CMLL shows, the best thing to do is to drop us an e-mail at [email protected] and let us know. Cool name, by the way.

Q: How many times have groups like NWO, Four Horsemen or DX joined together and disbanded? When thinking back, it’s hard to place a date or incident where they officially disbanded. For example, after the NWO came The Wolfpac, then a rejoining, a Japan NWO and they even had an LWO, but I can’t remember what made each of these incarnations come to fruition and eventually dissolve away. – Geremy Kerr

A: Many times. There were multiple factions that splintered off of the original now and several incarnations of the Horsemen and DX. Sometimes there is an angle shot that leads to the formation of a group, like the Hart Foundation in 1997 or WCW/ECW Alliance in 2001, while other times a collection of guys are simply put together with no explanation, such as D.O.A. or Los Boricuas. Many of them did just sort of died off without much fanfare, but for most of the bigger ones, that was not the case. With Evolution, for example, they kicked out Randy Orton and Batista later turned on Triple H and Ric Flair. But you can also point to the Main Event Mafia in TNA where there was no such angle. Poor Scott Steiner is still holding team meetings by himself.

Q: Will WWE ever bring back their juniors division? Also, what was the deal with Randy Orton using Killswitch Engage’s “This Fire Burns” for one night on Smackdown back in 2006? – Justin (J.R.399)

A: For some background, as I had nearly forgotten about this myself, WWE created a “Juniors” division back in October 2005 as a Smackdown property. It featured a number of midget wrestlers from Mexico that mostly appeared in comedy skits before the division was abruptly dropped in March 2006 and all the minis were released. WWE has no plans that I’m aware of to resurrect this division, which is a shame because I still look back fondly on the mid-90’s WWF and the days of Max Mini, Mini Mankind and Mini Vader. As for Orton’s theme, they used it once, realized it wasn’t a good fit for his character and it later went to CM Punk. This is not the first time such a thing has occurred with the most famous example being Rick Derringer’s “Real American”, originally intended for the U.S. Express (Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo), going to some dude named Hulk Hogan.

Q: Do you think if Miz cashed in his Money in the Bank at WrestleMania, which he would have announced ahead of time, and lost a close, hard-fought match that it would do more for his career than winning the title after the champion has just had a match or been beaten up? – Keith

A: Absolutely. The worst thing that could happen is for Miz to cash in on a vulnerable champion after their match, lose, and look like a complete goofball. The best thing would be for him to show some guts, announce in advance his intentions to go to the main event of WrestleMania to challenge for the title and have a competitive match, win or lose. One idea I suggested on a recent episode of the Sound Off is that if WWE is seriously considering turning John Cena heel, start planting the seeds now and build to a double turn at Mania with him defending the title against Miz.

Q: What do you think of CM Punk being groomed as the next color commentator for Raw? I think it would be a brilliant move. His mic skills are great and I think Jerry Lawler’s schtick is getting old. – Vic from Vegas

A: Punk has been incredible the few times I’ve heard him on commentary, namely Raw last Monday and NXT. He’s far more valuable as an in-ring performer, so I would hate to see him announcing right now, but he would be an asset in that role when he’s ready to hang up the boots, or if he were sidelined with an injury for an extended period of time (he recently underwent an MRI for a nagging hip issue). I also think Big Show has been tremendous on commentary the few times I’ve heard him. As for Jerry Lawler, he is a shell of his former self, but I can’t lay the blame totally at his feet. He’s doing what Vince McMahon tells him to do and playing the role of wacky heel announcer with TV-14 one liners doesn’t fit into today’s PG environment. To see what I’m talking about, click here and take a look at this classic Jerry Lawler promo from Raw in 1997. All these years later, this segment still makes my jaw drop.

Backstage Heat On MVP, Reason For Awful Divas Match, Cena

9

— It was reported last week by the Pro Wrestling Torch that MVP developed heat backstage for moaning about the company’s younger performers being promoted ahead of him. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting this week that the SmackDown Superstar garnered heat for recent Twitter remarks complaining about his lack of a push with the organization.

— The reason given for the substandard outcome of the Kaitlyn vs. Maxine bout on last week’s episode of NXT was because the ring was late in being set up and the Rookie Divas had no time to plan their match move-for-move beforehand like they usually do. The ring setup was delayed because it had to be rigged for The Undertaker to pull Kane down through it for the evening’s SmackDown taping.

— John Cena has not appeared at WWE live events as of late because he’s been in New Mexico filming Blood Brothers for WWE Studios.

Hulk Hogan Issues “Final Warning” & Hypes Big Things For TNA

20

TNA star Hulk Hogan is back with another video and is making some strong statements about the state of TNA Wrestling.

Despite the fact that Hogan and Bischoff have had more than half a year to turn things around and bring real change to TNA, Hogan admits the company currently features”fake ass wrestlers” and “fake ass storylines.” Hogan now says things are “about to happen” in TNA and issues a “final warning.”

“We’re going to start shooting,” Hogan said. “This is about drawing money. And if you don’t draw money, then you don’t belong here. We’re going to blow the roof off this place. We’re going to do with TNA what should have been done all along – we’re going to make it interesting.”

What do you think about Hogan’s rant? Does the current Hogan-Bischoff regime even have the ability to turn things around, or is this going to be another “earth shattering announcement” that “changes the face of TNA forever” but really doesn’t mean anything 2 weeks later? Orton Interview: He’ll Never Quit WWE, WM27 & More

15

WWE Champion Randy Orton is interviewed in the latest issue of WWE Magazine, which hits newsstands next Tuesday. Here are some highlights of what the Viper said about:

The difference between a good match and a great match in WWE is always…

“How I leave the live audience and how they respond or react. At this past SummerSlam, Sheamus and I had what I consider to be a very good match—the crowd, however, was just kind of down. It was weird. If we contested that same match a month earlier or a week later, even in the same arena, the reaction might’ve been 10 times louder. Even though a match is technically good, if it’s the last one during a three-hour show…well, sometimes the crowd is spent.”

How He’s Grown As A Performer:

“That my confidence level has gone up. I’d have to say that that’s one of the most important attributes to have in this business. If you’re not confident in yourself and your abilities, as soon as you walk through the curtain, the fans can sense that right away.”

Why He Likes Posting On Twitter:

“It lets fans know who Randy Orton really is. There are a lot of fans out there who think I’m an arrogant jerk, or hard to talk to. It’s humanized me a little more, which may or may not be a good thing.”

His Goal For Next Year’s WrestleMania:

“Win. Hopefully I’ll still be the champion. I think I’d like to face John Cena. We started in OVW together 10 years ago and came up through the ranks. We have quite the history, of course. I think that the two of us going at it at ‘Mania would be epic. We have so many things in common and, at the same time, there’s so much contrast between us as well.”

If He Quit WWE – What Would He Do On His Last Day?

“That’s impossible to answer, on the grounds that I’d never quit under any circumstances.”

McIntyre’s His Dream Opponent, New WWE Signing, More

12

— Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre revealed in an interview with WWE Magazine that his dream opponent is The Undertaker as he would put his cherished hair on the line for a chance to break his undefeated streak at WrestleMania.

“Undertaker and The Streak—a Hair vs. Streak Match. I would absolutely risk my hair for a chance to break ‘Taker’s record,” he replied in response to a question asking who he would put his hair on the line against and what type of match. “Even if I lost, I’d still have main-evented ‘Mania against ‘Taker. Either way it goes, I’m a winner. Maybe a bald winner, but it’d be worth it.”

Earlier in the interview, McIntyre jokingly said he plans on being buried with his hairbrush.

— World Wrestling Entertainment has signed Heritage Championship Wrestling Champion “The Future” Donovan Ruddick to a developmental contract. The St. Louis based wrestler, who’s real name is Brian McGhee, was on hand for Bragging Rights and this week’s television tapings.

— Matt Hardy, who was released from his contract with World Wrestling Entertainment on Oct. 15, has been added to the company website’s Alumni section.

Serena Comments On Her WWE Run & Shaving Her Head

4

Former WWE Diva Serena was recently interviewed by Serena-Deeb.com and spoke about her short-but-memorable run in WWE.

Here are some highlight of what Serena said about:

Her Future in Pro Wrestling:

“I still have many goals in wrestling that I haven’t fulfilled yet. Wrestling in Japan would be the biggest of those. The respect for wrestling over there is a precious thing and I would be honored to wrestle in front of those crowds. I also think it’s something that I want to prove to myself because not everyone can wrestle that style. The best times in my career so far were my times spent overseas, so I also would love to do more tours abroad. Mexico would be great because I am fluent in Spanish so I would be able to use that skill as well. I want to continue to focus on professional growth, as well as personal. I am still very young with a lot I haven’t seen in the world. We owe it to ourselves to become a better person with each day. The world hasn’t even seen how talented I am yet, but I promise that it will.”

Shaving Her Head As Part Of The Straight Edge Society:

“I was approached with the idea of shaving my head and although it took some thinking (being a woman with long hair my whole life), when you are given an opportunity to live your lifelong dream, you will do almost anything. I have no idea if others were asked to do it or not.”

The entire interview can be read here.

King Of The The Ring Returns On 3-Hour RAW On 11/29

16

It’s been confirmed that the special 3-hour November 29th episode of Monday Night RAW will feature the return of the King of the Ring tournament. The show will take place from Philadelphia, PA.

This will be the first KOTR tournament since 2008, when William Regal was crowned king.

The King of the Ring tournament began back in 1998 and ran almost every year until 1993, when the event was turned into its own pay-per-view event. WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart was crowned King of the Ring in 1993 and the event ran on PPV until 2002. KOTR winners in that period included stars like Steve Austin, Triple H, Kurt Angle, Edge and Brock Lesnar.

After the brand split, the show disappeared for 4 years, when it was revived on the SmackDown brand and won by Booker T, which kicked off his “King Booker” gimmick. There was no KOTR in 2007 and the following year, William Regal won the event. There was no KOTR last year.

No word yet on whether the entire tournament will take place that night, but its likely.

With the amount of young talent on the RAW roster, WWE will have no problem filling the brackets with good match-ups.

NOC PPV Buyrate Tanks, CM Punk Gets MRI, R-Truth’s Music

38

– The early PPV buyrate numbers are in for WWE’s Night of Champions 2010 pay-per-view and once again – the downward trend continues.

According to early estimates, this year’s event drew 169,000 buys, down a sharp 36.7% from 267,000 last year. WWE will report the official number in its third quarter 2010 earnings report, which will be released on November 4.

The preliminary buyrate expected to rise a bit before the final results are in, but it’s becoming more apparent by the month that WWE’s pay-per-view business is in bad shape and big changes are needed.

This year’s Night of Champions was $5 more expensive than last year and was headlined by Randy Orton winning the WWE title in a Six-Pack Challenge and the first match of the latest Undertaker & Kane feud.

– We reported earlier this week that CM Punk appeared to suffer a back or hip injury at Sunday’s Bragging Rights pay-per-view. CM Punk noted on Twitter hat he underwent an MRI yesterday, his birthday. Punk has been pulled from the next few WWE live events as a precaution and the results of the MRI should be available in the next few days. We’ll follow up on this.

– Several national media outlets have picked up on the story that WWE merchandise is no longer banned at Connecticut voting stations on Election Day.

– Vince McMahon is reportedly the person behind R-Truth’s new theme song. The idea is that like a real hip hop performer, R-Truth will release a few songs a year that will get played on WWE programming.

– WWE Monday Night Raw on January 24th, 2011 will be held at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Tickets go on sale December 4th, 2010. (Credit: Devin Cutting.)

Maryse Interview: Her Character, Boyfriend, Getting Spit On

11

WWE Diva Maryse was interviewed by the UK Sun last week and had some interesting things to say about her on-screen character, being a sexy Diva in today’s “PG” environment, whether she has a boyfriend and fans spitting at her. Here are some highlights of what Maryse said about:

Being a Sexy Diva in Today’s “PG” Environment:

“We do wear revealing outfits but it’s not like wearing a g-string like in the past. I’d never wear that – I don’t think it would be very comfortable. Our outfits are sexy but not provocative to the point where people will say, ‘oh my God, my kids can’t watch this.'”

Her Personal Life – Does She Have A Boyfriend?

“I’m not married but I’m dating. I have a great boyfriend, he’s not a wrestler.”

The rigorous WWE travel schedule:

“What we do is physical and very hard on the body. I travel 300 days a year which is tough. Sometimes we’re up at 4am for a flight. The show stays brilliant because all the stars compete to keep it interesting.”

Her on-screen character and fans spitting at her:

“I would compare what I do to being a rock star, a movie star and professional wrestling star combined together. I don’t take anything seriously. But Maryse’s ring character is like, ‘you want to look like me, be like me, have everything I have but you can’t.’ I’d like to get my character to point where people really, truly want to fricking kill me.”

Fans Spitting On Her:

“Fans know my hair is my thing – I flip my hair every time I get in the ring – and believe it or not some spit in my hair. They can’t touch to you so they spit on you. They get really into it.”

Monday’s RAW Rating, Changes Coming To Tough Enough

7

– Monday’s 10/25 episode of WWE RAW drew a 3.1 cable rating, virtually even with last week. The show did hours of 3.06 and 3.08 and averaged 4,641,000 viewers for the two hour broadcast. Not a great sign of momentum coming out of Sunday’s Bragging Rights pay-per-view, but at least they’ve got 2 consecutive weeks above 3.0.

– The 10/23 episode of WWE AM RAW did a 0.64 cable rating with 835,000 viewers.

– WWE is planning on making changes to the format of “Tough Enough” before it hits the USA Network, although the nature of those changes is unknown at this time. We have heard that WWE is talking with a few top production companies that specialize in reality television about running the show.

Ban On WWE Merchandise At CT Voting Polls Lifted

16

This article is an update to:  WWE Sues Connecticut Secretary Of State For Censorship

To update the earlier report about WWE suing Connecticut’s Secretary of State for banning WWE merchandise when voters go to the polls in the Connecticut Senate race on 11/2, the following statement was released on Tuesday:

STAMFORD, Conn. – “The moment Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz issued an un-American, unconstitutional and discriminatory directive prohibiting voters from wearing WWE merchandise at the polls, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal should have immediately stepped in to enforce the law. As a result of the Attorney General’s inaction, I brought suit to enforce these basic, fundamental constitutional rights. Within hours of filing the lawsuit, Blumenthal recused himself, and Bysiewicz reversed her position and immediately notified all Local Registrar of Voters and Town Clerks via email. I am pleased that Connecticut voters have had their freedom of expression and their right to vote restored,” said Vince McMahon, Chairman and CEO, World Wrestling Entertainment.

WWE Sues Connecticut Secretary Of State For Censorship

33

World Wrestling Entertainment announced today that it is suing Connecticut’s Secretary of State after it ruled that any Connecticut voters who showed up to vote for Linda McMahon’s Senate campaign wearing WWE merchandise would be turned away.

The statement from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon reads as follows:

STAMFORD, Conn., October 26, 2010 – “On behalf of myself, my company, WWE® fans and any Connecticut citizen who wants to exercise their constitutional right to vote, I have filed a lawsuit today asserting that Susan Bysiewicz’s directive that allows poll workers to refuse registered voters wearing WWE merchandise the right to vote is a flagrant act of censorship and discrimination,” said Vince McMahon, Chairman and CEO, World Wrestling Entertainment.”

What do you guys think? Is Vince going overboard – or is it really discrimination? Comment below and share your thoughts.

UPDATE: TMZ.com has picked up this story and released new details on the papers filed in federal court. McMahon claims the ban will “threaten the constitutional rights and liberties of voters who have expressed a desire to wear WWE paraphernalia to their poling places.”

Vince also says he “intends to wear WWE paraphernalia when he enters the polling place to cast his vote on November 2, 2010.”

Vince argues that Linda McMahon is no longer a WWE employee and demands that a judge “immediately” reverse the ban on WWE merchandise at voting sites across Connecticut.

Shaul Guerrero Signs With WWE (Pictures)

Shaul Guerrero, the 20 year old daughter of Vickie Guererro and the late Eddie Guererro, has reportedly signed a developmental deal with World Wrestling Entertainment.

Shaul Guerrero has been telling fans at recent FCW live events that she’s signed to a deal and waiting to begin her training. She also recently updated the “About Me” section of her MySpace page with a message that says she is moving from El Paso, Texas to Florida to pursue a professional wrestling career with WWE’s developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling.
