Big Update On The Undertaker’s Return & WM27 Plans

51

With The Undertaker scheduled to return to WWE television on the Monday, February 21st episode of WWE RAW (the night after Elimination Chamber), we’ve got an update on his health and what’s being discussed for him for WrestleMania.

The planned Undertaker vs. Wade Barrett WrestleMania main event has been reportedly scrapped. This feud made sense as Wade Barrett was the leader of Nexus when the group destroyed the Undertaker and put him out of action at Survivor Series, but WWE now has a totally different direction for the Dead Man.

According to a very reliable WWE source, the current plan is for The Undertaker to wrestle Triple H, with Shawn Michaels serving as the special guest referee. The match would have a stipulation of Career vs. Streak, with Triple H being forced to retire if he cannot defeat the Dead Man.

The Undertaker has been doing a lot of rehab on his surgically repaired shoulder and WWE is very confident he’ll be on track to compete at WrestleMania. While nobody is expecting a WrestleMania classic as in previous years, he should be able to work a good singles match.

WWE Questioning If Edge Is Still World Hwt. Champion

20

The WWE website is questioning whether Edge is still the World Heavyweight Champion following last night’s episode of SmackDown.

The “Rated R Superstar” retained the belt over Dolph Ziggler after Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews replaced Vickie Guerrero as the bout’s Special Guest Referee and made the three-count.

WWE.com published an article concerning Matthews’ involvement with the match, which teases controversy.

“And although Matthews wouldn’t divulge who gave him the authority to be a WWE Official, the WWE Universe is left to wonder if Edge is still the World Heavyweight Champion and if Matthews’ power as a WWE Official ultimately supersedes that of an angry “acting” SmackDown General Manager in Vickie Guerrero.”

The match featured a stipulation where Ziggler would automatically become the new World Heavyweight Champion if Edge attempted to use the Spear against his opponent. Edge hit the banned Spear on Ziggler two separate times during the closing moments of the match.

12-Man Tag Match On Next Week’s 600th SmackDown

4

— Next week’s episode of SmackDown, which is being billed as the 600th, will feature a 12-Man Tag Team Match pitting the competitors of both Elimination Chamber Matches at Elimination Chamber.

World Heavyweight Champion Edge, John Cena, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, John Morrison and R-Truth will take on Dolph Ziggler, CM Punk, King Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Drew McIntyre and Kane.

— The February 10 episode of WWE Superstars on WGN America scored a 0.65 cable rating, with 605,000 viewers. Viewership was down from last week’s show, which drew a 0.73 rating, with 839,000 viewers.

The midnight replay drew a 0.17, with 154,000 viewers.

— Triple H appears on the Lemmy Kilmster documentary currently on VHI, Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch.

Justin Beiber At WrestleMania & 6 Planned Matches

37

Following Sunday’s Royal Rumble and Monday’s episode of WWE RAW, the planned card for WrestleMania 27 is starting to take shape. Here’s a look at what the card is looking like:

* WWE Champion The Miz defending vs. John Cena
* World Heavyweight champion Alberto Del Rio vs. Edge
* The Undertaker vs. Wade Barrett
* Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
* Nexus vs. The Corre in a 6-man tag match
* Triple H vs. Sheamus

Jerry Lawler is also scheduled to wrestle at WrestleMania, likely as a culmination of his feud with Michael Cole. Alex Riley has been discussed as a possible opponent for The King.

In the case of Taker vs. Barrett, if Taker can’t work a singles match there is a backup plan of Kane and Taker vs. the four members of The Corre. No word where this would leave Nexus but it might not happen as Taker is telling everyone he will be ready to go.

As far as celebrities for the big show, WWE is still trying to get Justin Beiber involved, which explains Alberto Del Rio’s reference to him on RAW.

Overall viewership was also down, from 1.95 million viewers to 1.70.

The show drew hours of 1.22 and 1.18.

— TNA World Heavyweight Champion Mr. Anderson vs. Jeff Hardy headline tonight’s TNA Wrestling live event at the First Arena in Elmira, New York. Also advertised is a TNA World Tag Team Championship Match between Beer Money, Inc. and Ink, Inc, Brother Devon vs. Bully Ray in a Tables Match, and Madison Rayne vs. Angelina Love for the TNA Women’s Knockout Championship.

MAILBAG: Was John Cena Really Stabbed In A Nightclub?

17

SEScoops Mailbag for February 11th

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: Why do they show people like The Undertaker, Triple H, John Morrison and John Cena in the opening video to “WWE Superstars” if they’re never even on the show? – Ryan Begley

A: Because showing people like Yoshi Tatsu, Zack Ryder, Tyson Kidd and Tyler Reks doesn’t exactly scream starpower, now does it?

Q: Will WWE ever go back to the completely random drafts where they roll the cage and pick out a superstar like in 2004, or will they keep this pre-arranged draft? – Rory

A: I think they should just ditch the draft altogether. Explain to me what the point of having a draft is when Smackdown guys are showing up all the time on Raw and vice versa? It drives me insane. I actually have no problem with it, until they start talking about a draft again each year and it makes me tremble with anger. It would be the equivalent of the New York Jets drafting Tom Brady out of college (hey, we can dare to dream) and then just letting him show up one week and start playing for the Chargers. Either do a draft and keep the brands completely separate or just end the brand split and unify the rosters.

Q: I’d like a proper answer on what the deal with Desmond Wolfe. Where is the poor bastard? – Jovan, Australia

A: He has been sidelined with an undisclosed medical condition. He’s ready and waiting for TNA to put him back on television, and they even shot some vignettes for his return several weeks ago, but then decided against airing them for whatever reason.

Q: Do you have any insight on the Royal Rumble that saw Lex Luger and Bret Hart tie? Was that the planned ending? This seems like something they had to work on a lot, kind of like Morrison’s move this year. – Trey Fowler, Atlanta, GA

A: I’m not sure if they actually rehearsed going over the top rope before the show, but yes, that was the planned ending to the 1994 Royal Rumble. It was done as a way for the WWF to gauge crowd reaction to both Luger and Hart after the match. As you may recall, they first announced Luger as the winner to a tepid response from the fans. Then, as the referees argued further, Bret Hart was announced as the winner and the fans in Rhode Island went crazy. It was at that point that Vince McMahon likely decided Bret Hart was getting the title back at WrestleMania 10.

Q: At WrestleMania 23, Mr. Kennedy won the MITB [briefcase], only to lose it to Edge later on. I also noticed that Edge was wheeled out of [Mania] that night and Kennedy’s MITB storyline lacked depth as he didn’t do the normal things a heel would do. Was Edge meant to win that night but couldn’t due to being injured in the middle of the match? It just seemed like a waste to have Edge lose, along with his [Mania] undefeated streak at the time, just to have him obtain it anyway. – Adam Meads

A: No, Kennedy was scheduled to be the winner all along. Undertaker, who was hurting bad at the time and in need of surgery (this is my shocked face) for a torn bicep, was the World champion and they had to get the belt off him fast. The original idea that Kennedy would begin a countdown to cash in his title shot at the following year’s WrestleMania was tossed out in favor of him taking the title from Taker, but then Kennedy suffered an injury himself. It was believed to have been more serious than it actually was, so instead of needing surgery and being out for several months, Kennedy was only out for a few weeks with a bad bruise. Unfortunately for him, by the time they figured that out, it was too late. They had Edge beat him quickly on Raw for the briefcase and cash in on Taker the next night to win the World title.

Q: In 2004, they had that storyline where John Cena was stabbed in a nightclub. Was there any realism to that? It seemed like they pushed it pretty hard because they even mentioned it on Raw. – Ryan

A: If you’re asking me whether or not John Cena was really stabbed, he was not. The storyline here involved Carlito, who was feuding with Cena over the U.S. Title at the time, allegedly having his bodyguard, Jesus (played by Aaron Aguilera), stab Cena in a nightclub. If they pushed it pretty hard, it was because the idea of someone getting stabbed is not your typical, run-of-the-mill wrestling angle. If they wanted to get it over, they had to go for the hard sell.

Q: How come they’ve never given Vicki Guerrero an entrance theme? – Nate

A: She doesn’t need one. As soon as you hear her screeches of “Excuse me!”, she garners ATOMIC heat from the crowd. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Q: I just finished reading Mick Foley’s “Countdown To Lockdown” and I noticed he and Edge kind of have the same pre-match talk with their opponent(s) about certain bits of their match and never go over anything permanent, so it got me wondering. I know it’s scripted with who will win, but do they go over [the entire] match or just make it up as they go along. I have always wondered, even though it’s probably a silly question. – Karl

A: It depends on the people involved. A veteran like an Edge or Mick Foley is not going to script out a match move for move. This doesn’t mean there aren’t people who do this. Randy Savage was adamant about mapping out his match with Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania 3 right down to the exact move and it was something they memorized for months in advance. My sense is that most wrestlers, at least in WWE and TNA, know the outcome and how to get there, plan a few key spots that the office wants them to include, and they wing the rest of it.

Q: In the previous mailbag, you mentioned in reference to Stone Cold in 2003: he ‘knew when it was time to move on’ and that other superstars could learn from this. Can you expand upon this? There are some obvious candidates (Flair, Hogan) but could you pinpoint a date, match and/or storyline that should have signaled the end for some superstars? Any that left the business/retired too early? – Dustin S.

A: I see you already mentioned Ric Flair, but I’m going to mention him anyway. Flair probably should have retired from in-ring competition in 2004. There were rumors for a brief time of Flair wanting a singles match with Ricky Steamboat at WrestleMania 20, which never happened, but that would have been a fine way for him to hang up the boots. If it wasn’t going to happen that way, then he should have stayed true to his word and retired after Mania 24. He got the greatest sendoff a pro wrestler has ever received over the course of that 3-day period, but he just couldn’t help himself. Mick Foley is another great example. When he “retired” in 2000, only to be coaxed back just one month later into the Mania 16 main event, that was a mistake. He did have a great match with Randy Orton in 2004 and that would have been another great opportunity to step aside with his head held high and his body still (mostly) in tact. Another example would be Terry Gordy of the famed Freebirds, who was a fantastic worker, but was never really the same after the OD that caused him to lapse into a coma in 1993. He continued to wrestle until his death many years later, but his run as The Executioner in the WWF was one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. As far as people that retired too early, The Rock has to be at the top of the list. He retired in 2004, but had many, many more years of great matches left in him. He wanted to fade away quietly and pursue other things in his life and I respect the hell out of him for it.

Q: In 2005, we saw Batista beat Cena in the Royal Rumble and win the WHC from HHH while Cena won the WWE Title from JBL. Then Cena lost his title in January 2006 while Batista had to forfeit his WHC a couple of days later due to injury. Was Batista meant to be the face of the WWE over John Cena? And if not, why did they have John lose the Rumble match if he was gonna be the face of WWE? – Justin S.

A: What makes this all rather funny is that it was neither of those two men who were figured to be “the man” at that particular time, but rather, Randy Orton. When Orton was kicked out of Evolution and turned babyface, it was assumed he would be wrestling Triple H in the WrestleMania main event the following year, but what ended up happening is his turn was handled so poorly and he dropped the title so quickly, it took him years to recover. Meanwhile, the fans started to get behind Batista in a big way and he essentially took that spot. By this point, yes, they realized they were going to go all the way with Cena, but until he shifted over to the Raw brand, he was always going to be #2 by virtue of being on the perceived “weaker” brand.

Q: There’s been a lot of talk about facial expressions as being key for wrestlers lately. I recall someone talking about how guys with short hair have to be better with facial expressions to make up for the fact they don’t have long hair to fly back when they get punched. Of course, they use facial expressions to sell a lot more than punches. Punk used them pretty nicely at the end of Raw to sell the bit where Lawler handed a chair to Cena, who subsequently cleared the ring leaving Punk on the floor. Do you have any comments or observations on facial expressions in the wrestling business? – Bill Rigsby

A: First off, while whipping your long hair back on a punch does make for a nice visual effect, there have been quite a few wrestlers who have done well for themselves without long hair, if any hair at all, regardless of their facials. Steve Austin says hello. That said, facial expressions and mannerisms play a HUGE role in wrestling. You can enhance a character or create a memorable moment simply by smirking or raising your eyebrow in a certain way. The best thing that ever happened to Dos Caras Jr. was being forced to take off his mask while in FCW because that signature smile and wink is such a big part of his current Alberto Del Rio persona. Kane losing his mask was a mistake, in my opinion, but the one thing about him now without it that’s so great are his fabulous facial expressions. Lastly, one of the all-time classic WrestleMania moments involved a bloody and demented Vince McMahon outside the ring peering up over the apron during his match with Hulk Hogan. No words were said, but that image is still etched in my brain to this day.

Q: I was wondering who you think is the most underrated tag team in history? I say Haas and Benjamin, and maybe Harlem Heat. – Chase

A: The Jumping Bomb Angels. They don’t get nearly enough recognition for their talent. Seriously, look up some of their matches on YouTube and you’ll see what I mean.

JR Blog: His WWE Contract Status, Jericho’s New Book & More

1

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

His WWE Contract Status: “Emailer asked me if I was able to do other talent work outside WWE or would my contract prevent such? I don’t have a talent contract with WWE but am a proud employee. I am able to do free lance projects outside WWE as long as they are not pro wrestling gigs which honestly don’t interest me at this time. Theoretically, I could do MMA , football, etc with no apparent issues. There is nothing on the ‘horizon’ other than my desire to broadcast Oklahoma Sooner football this fall on radio. There’s no new news on that front and, as I have said before, I feel that I’m in the hunt but a long shot.”

His WM27 Weekend Plans: “I’m considering a few fan convention opportunities in the future. I don’t make many of them and never have due to the lack of available time but I’m going to try and do a few more selected appearances during 2011. I will continue to turn down Saturday appearances during college football season as I would rather go watch OU play than to miss the game to earn a payday elsewhere.

I will be appearing at WM27 Axxess Friday night at the HUGE, THQ function….Saturday morning with The King at a WWE Hall of Fame signing, and Sunday around noon for a Q&A. Plus, we will have our products at the main, WWE merchandise stand throughout Axxess.”

Chris Jericho’s New Book “Undisputed”: “Chris mixes WWE experiences with his band Fozzy’s tales of the road and rock ‘n roll to create a unique balance within ‘Undisputed.’ When I get through with a wrestling chapter I can’t wait to read more but then I read a Fozzy chapter and I become intrigued about the music business and life as a ‘rock star.’ One thing that many casual fans don’t know is that Jericho was one of the more physical guys with legit toughness to step into a WWE ring under my watch which was both a blessing and a curse as you will see when you read ‘Undisputed’ of which I HIGHLY recommend.”

Eve Torres On Why She’s Champion, Her Jiu-Jitsu Training

16

WWE Divas Champion Eve Torres spoke with The Miami Herald at this week’s WrestleMania 28 press conference. Here are some highlights:

Winning the Divas Title again: “It’s kind of like the first time you really don’t know how much it means to you, until you lose it. When it is the first time, you almost don’t know how to make the most out of it and to truly fight for it. I think any time you get the chance to represent the title and to earn the title, you learn how to represent it in the best way.

You learn how to wear it with honor, fight for it with honor and really become the face of WWE for the divas. It’s an amazing opportunity. You have to be ready for those opportunities when they come. Otherwise what is the point of having those opportunities? I have mine and plan on making it last. I plan on getting the most out of it.”

Why she’s Champion: “All of the divas are given opportunities. It’s kind of the way you go after them and what you do with them. I feel like I was able to cease the opportunity I was given, and now I am divas champion. You are representing the entire company. I think it shows the company has faith in you, and we have faith in ourselves.”

Her jiu-jitsu training: “Jiu-jitsu is something I absolutely love. I never planned on going into MMA or anything like that. I literally do it for fun and for my own self defense. I think it’s important for women to learn that. I think it’s very empowering and has helped with my confidence inside and outside the ring. I think that is why it’s so meaningful for me.”

JR Blog: Mr. Perfect, Sting-WWE, WM28 Being Outdoors

3

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is back with another blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

The Late Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig: “Indeed Curt Henning was a special performer who was athletically gifted and naturally charismatic. Perfect or ‘Perfecto’ as Razor Ramon used to call him was a classic practical joker in the locker room and had the ability to make one laugh or want to kill him. Perfect once put a lock and chain on my brief case and attached it to the rafter of the locker room. I had to get the building people to find and then loan me bolt cutters to cut down my brief case where my car keys were being held prisoner.”

WrestleMania 28 Being Outdoors: “I have mixed emotions about Wrestlemania 28 going outdoors with no dome to protect the event from the elements and to retain the crowd noise. I have been to the stadium in Miami for several games and it can get loud there so perhaps the noise issue may be less of an issue than some perceive. Nonetheless no one can control Mother Nature as I can attest by simply looking out my window where I’m sitting.”

Sting and WWE: “Sorry that some take exception when they ask for my opinion and I simply give it. No…I do not think that Sting is going to sign with WWE and wrestle the Undertaker at WM27. For those ‘Oliver Stone’s’ out there that have it all figured out and are threatening to ‘boycott’ WM27 over this self induced fiasco, do whatever it is that makes you happy. I’m fairly certain that if Sting and WWE wanted to do business together that it would get done.

Plus, even though there is obvious renewed interest in the Sting persona, if I were WWE I would not do a Sting DVD until I had access to the man himself so that a proposed Sting DVD would not be a compilation but rather a documentary. I’d be happy to sit off camera and conduct the interview, for the record.

Or, let the ‘Voice of WWE’ do it.”

*Spoiler* Details On John Cena’s New Movie “Blood Brothers”

7

Thanks to Anthony Maurizio and PWInsider.com for the following notes from WWE Studios’ screening of Blood Brothers starring John Cena this week:

“I attended the test screening in Port Chester, NY last night of John Cena’s new film “Blood Brothers” from WWE Studios, and was selected to be part of a focus group afterward.

The movie was a surprisingly well-done, fast-paced film, not too over-the-top on senseless action and not too brutally drawn-out. Cena’s acting is once again akin to his backstage WWE promos, where he tries hard but you get the occasional reminder that he is indeed acting. Not an award-winning performance, but not horrible either.

Ethan Embry as Cena’s brother was a high point of the film, one of the most featured roles the guy had since “Can’t Hardly Wait” and “Vegas Vacation”. Still a funny dude, and a good actor. Amy Smart played the sister trying to reunite the three brothers.

The focus group after was in the first couple theater rows, and the area was rigged with tape recorders for WWE Studios to listen to. A theater ambassador was asking questions about the movie and our opinions. It got a generally-positive response, even from the girls in the group. Some of the items discussed were changing the title (as the “Blood Brothers” title hints at towards a horror genre tone to some audience demographics), the comparison of the movie to “Four Brothers”, Cena’s acting ability, Amy Smart’s acting (which others attempted to bury but I applauded her for her performance), and it’s comparison to other WWE films.

There were some weird responses in the focus group like not enough bloodshed in the movie, it being too “family-friendly”, people claiming vital scenes that were integral to the movie’s story progression were unnecessary.

I went on a little bit of a tirade commending Suburban Commando and Mr. Nanny as my favorite films ever featuring a wrestling star, and generated a reaction. And when asked what other superstars should be in a WWE film, I randomly ranted and raved about Macho Man Randy Savage deserving a WWE film role and got a positive reaction out of the group and moderator. I figured bringing up those items would be a big frown or a look of frustration on the face of Executive Producer Vincent K. McMahon. Haha.”
