The New Jersey native has been appearing in Florida Championship Wrestling as a heel since the conclusion of the show.

Three WWE Stars Officially Removed From SmackDown Roster

6

Finlay, Joey Mercury and Paul Bearer have been removed from the SmackDown roster page on WWE.com.

Finlay, a one-time United States Champion, had appeared sparingly in the squared circle since the beginning of last year. Vince McMahon reportedly decreed removing Finlay as an active performer in the spring due to his age — now 51. He does, however, remain with the organization as a producer.

Bearer was written off television on the December 10 episode of SmackDown as the show concluded with Kane pushing a set of ladders over a railing, sending the longtime manager to the concrete floor below, thus injuring him. Bearer noted in a blog post days later that his original WWE contract was a short-term deal, but that it still had a “couple of months remaining.” He has not indicated whether he has parted ways with the organization.

Mercury’s tenure with the Straight Edge Society came to a halt in August as he underwent surgery on a torn pectoral muscle. He later began working as a trainer in Florida Championship Wrestling while recuperating from his surgery.

— TNA Wrestling has posted a video of Karen Jarrett offering fans a tour of the Jarrett estate in Nashville, Tennessee.

— A woman in Winnsboro, South Carolina won $100,000 off a Ric Flair scratch-off ticket, reports www.wltx.com. The winner’s husband, a longtime fan of Flair, told lottery officials that he was walking around their house chanting “Woooo!” afterwards.

“Now, I have a new reason to scream ‘Woooo!’ he said. “She’s started saying it.”

— Sarita is working this week’s TNA Wrestling live event tour across the southern United States, her first since June. She generally doesn’t work house shows due to her obligations with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico and reportedly due to expenses because she is amongst the highest paid female performers in the company.

Knockout Removed From Roster, Hardy Denies Lita Rumors, More

7

— The TNA Wrestling website has removed Chelsea from their roster page, likely indicating that she has parted ways with the organization.

— Matt Hardy is denying online reports that he wants to bring Lita to TNA Wrestling.

He wrote on Twitter, “IWC Rumor Killer-I HAVEN’T asked 4 Lita to come 2 TNA. I wish her happiness & the best in life, but I am not interested in workin with her.”

— Tommy Dreamer is off television now because creative team has nothing for him. He is limited to a backstage role at television tapings, albeit he worked this week’s live events tour.

JR Blog: Sting, CM Punk, Austin Hosting Tough Enough

6

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsbarbq.com. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

CM Punk’s Character: “Is there a better wrestling villain on TV these days than CM Punk? Arguable question but for my sauce, Punk is right there at the top of the heap with a handful of his peers.”

Steve Austin Hosting Tough Enough: “Steve Austin is very excited about hosting the new season of Tough Enough. It will be interesting to see how much star power and expertise is put in place when the training staff is announced. My instincts say that Austin will have a strong team to help him with the trainees. This will be a great opportunity for Stone Cold to be Stone Cold and to re-engage his many fans on a weekly TV series of which I have great expectations for and will be watching and DVR’ing every week. I do not know the status of Tough Enough airing outside the USA for those that are asking.”

Sting: “The Sting stories that have been on line regarding him coming to WWE have taken a life of their own. Will Sting ever come to WWE? Does a 51 year old guy want to engage in an ambitious,  road schedule or any schedule? Could a deal be done and all the pieces be put in place before WM27? Is Sting even remotely interested in re-entering the squared circle on any level? I don’t know the answers to these questions nor, would I suggest, does anyone but Sting himself. Agreed, any thing is possible but what is feasible, doable, etc are questions that none of us can answer. I have seen Sting once in approximately 15 years and that was for about 5 minutes in Charlotte last year at the annual fan convention. I do know that he is a great human being after being around him for over two decades beginning when he came to work for Bill Watts as one half of the Bladerunner tag team with Warrior. They were known as Sting and Rock as I recall when they began their careers with the large Cowboy. Some of my best memories of calling wrestling bouts involved Sting back in the day in UWF and in WCW.”

Wade Barrett Talks WM27 Match With Taker, Nexus & More

8

Corre leader Wade Barrett was interviewed this week by Philadelphia radio host Brian Soscia. You can listen to an audio clip of the interview at MixPhiladelphia.com. Here are some highlights of what the former bare-knuckle boxer said about:

Why “Corre” Has Two R’s: “Corre Spelling: “We sent Heath Slater to the place to register trademarks and Heath isn’t the best at spelling. Then, we were set with Corre with two r’s.”

Nexus’s Debut: “We went through it that day exactly what we were going to do. We didn’t realize the kind of impact it would have,” he said. “We didn’t appreciate how it would look to the fans seeing the ring torn down. We knew it would be big, but we didn’t anticipate the reaction it would get.”

Rumors Of Him vs. Undertaker at WM27: “That’s not the case. I’ve had people Tweeting those rumors. I’ve certainly not heard that (from WWE). At the moment, certainly nothing has been organized,” Barrett said, while also indicating he would gladly accept the match if it were offered to him.”

Cena Pulled From Live Event, Sheffield Has Another Surgery

5

– John Cena is no longer being advertised for Saturday’s WWE live event from Rochester, Minnesota. Cena had been scheduled to wrestle CM Punk in the main event, but has since been replaced by John Morrison. No word yet on why Cena was pulled, but it’s not the first live event he’s skipped this year.

– Diesel has been added to the WWE Alumni page, including pictures from the former WWE champion’s storied career. It’s interesting to see how his look has evolved from when he debuted in the mid-1990s to his return to WWE at Sunday’s Royal Rumble, over 15 years later. You can check those pictures out here.

– Former Nexus member Skip Sheffield underwent a second surgery several weeks ago, this time to repair a trapped nerve in his injured leg. The trapped nerve went unnoticed during his first surgery and was causing severe discomfort and complications with his physical rehabilitation process. Sheffield is now off crutches and continues to rehab the leg. No word yet on when he’ll be back in action.

MAILBAG: Did Kevin Nash Lie To Vince McMahon in 1996?

23

SEScoops Mailbag for February 4th

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: I remember back during WWE’s nWo invasion when Hogan, Hall and Nash came in and they busted a cinderblock over Stone Cold’s knee. How did they do this or was it a case where they went off script? – Cody Short

A: I can assure you that Scott Hall, no matter how drunk he may have been, is not stupid enough to “shoot” on the biggest star in the company by shattering a cinderblock across his bionic knee. It was a planned spot and they used a lighter, more easily breakable material for added effect. It was still really stupid.

Q: Ric Flair wrestled in the Dominican Republic against Jack Veneno and had to lose the NWA World Title on purpose because he was afraid that the hometown crowd would riot. But later, Veneno gave back the title and was never was recognized as NWA champion.. What’s up with that? – Troy, Puerto Rico

A: I believe Ric Flair talks about this story in his book. Indeed, there is some rare footage of this match floating around on YouTube and based on the rabid crowd reaction, I tend to believe Flair was telling the truth when he says he feared for his safety had he won that match. Supposedly, he recognized this and decided to change the finish during the match, shouting at the referee to count three and then left the country without even taking the belt with him. The NWA had Veneno ship the belt back to the States. Phantom title changes were done with greater frequency back in those days and there have been some famous ones, such as Pat Patterson supposedly becoming the first Intercontinental champion in a tournament in Rio de Janeiro (it never happened) or Antonio Inoki beating Bob Backlund for the WWF Title in 1979, a reign that is not formally acknowledged by the promotion. I think WWE may have actually mentioned this in Inoki’s Hall of Fame induction video last year, which if they did would be the first time they’ve ever done so publicly.

Q: In multiple person non-title matches such as Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank, what happens if the guy who was supposed to win gets injured or, in the Rumble, accidentally eliminated? Do they have a backup winner? – J. Walker

A: I don’t believe they make it a point to assign a “backup winner” for the Rumble each year. What they would likely do in that situation is call an audible to one of the many referees at ringside. In 2005, both John Cena and Batista fell over the top and hit the floor in an unplanned spot. In that case, nobody knew what to do and in a fit of rage, Vince McMahon himself left the gorilla position and stormed down to the ring, tearing his quad in the process. It’s not exactly the same thing, but using the most recent Rumble as an example, Alex Riley accidentally eliminated himself early when he fell off the apron and hit the floor. He was to play a role in John Cena’s elimination later on, so they were forced to improvise and thankfully, Miz was already sitting at ringside doing commentary.

Q: Did Vladimir Koslov do something to piss of Vince McMahon big time a few years back? One second he’s in a World title match with HHH and the next he is in the minor leagues (aka ECW). Seems like he was getting a push and then nothing. He’s a tag champ now, but he’s still pretty much a clown. I’ve always wondered if he did something to make someone mad. – Ryan L.

A: Yeah, he pretty much sucked. That’s a surefire way to piss off your boss. His workrate was awful and his promo ability was even worse. They gave him plenty of opportunities because of his size, but like Khali, he just didn’t get better. Putting him in tag matches is a smart way to hide some of those weaknesses.

Q: Am I the only one who’s reminded of a young HHH when Drew McIntyre is in the ring? There’s obviously some fine tuning left to do, but I can’t help but think the kid is on the right track. – War Machine

A: Funny you should say that since Triple H and Shawn Michaels were both said to be big supporters of Drew when he was first getting his big push on Smackdown. Hell, no less of an authority than Mr. McMahon himself came on TV and proclaimed McIntyre to be the golden child. He also reminds me a lot physically of a young Hunter Hearst Helmsley, so perhaps HHH sees a little bit of himself in Drew. Unfortunately for him, he’s rubbed some people the wrong way backstage in the past and an incident last year with his wife where the cops were called didn’t exactly endear him to those in power. He also comes off as a rather bland character (something young Ted DiBiase also suffers from) and that needs to be addressed. He does have a great look and awesome theme music, so at least he has that going for him.

Q: If Stone Cold had not walked out in 2002, how much longer do you think he would have wrestled before having to retire anyway? I heard that at WrestleMania 19 against The Rock he was in a lot of pain, so it had to be his last match and he was relieved when it was over – Michael

A: I think he would have made it to the next Mania anyway, but there’s no way of knowing for sure. Part of the reason Austin left was lingering neck issues that were bothering him (not just the creative stalemate involving Brock Lesnar). He knew when he came back in 2003 that he was on his way out. That’s why they fed Eric Bischoff to him in an easy slaughter his first match back and rarely, if at all, had him wrestle before his battle with The Rock. The man knew when it was time to move on. You have to respect that. If only more wrestlers could learn from this.

Q: I think it would be a sweet idea if WWE pushed young stars to main event WrestleMania this year like Miz vs. Morrison and Del Rio vs. Ziggler. What do you think? – RJ

A: Del Rio against Ziggler? You lost me there. That said, Miz and Del Rio are likely to make it there, so you should be happy about that.

Q: I remember the heart punch being one of the most feared finishing moves back in the day, but now it’s all but disappeared. I researched it online and came up with nothing about the heart punch being banned anywhere. Just wondering why we don’t see it these days, specifically in the WWE or TNA. – Bill Rigsby

A: Is it bad that my only memory of a wrestler using the heart punch as a finish is Crush? I know others used it, too. I assume it’s not used because it’s not as flashy as many of the finishes used on TV today, but I would have no problem with someone using it. So many guys on the WWE roster alone seem to have the SAME finishing maneuver, it really makes you wonder what ever happened to creativity. As a matter of fact, in the same span of a week that Ezekiel Jackson made his return on Smackdown and Mason Ryan debuted on Raw, I believe they BOTH used the same uranage slam! Within days of each other! I’m begging for someone to bring back the powerbomb, but the heart punch works too.

Q: Just read on your site that Kevin Nash made a verbal promise to Dixie Carter to return to TNA, but clearly lied. Didn’t he do the exact same thing to Vince McMahon before jumping ship to WCW many years back? – Ryan

A: I don’t recall things going down that way, but I admit, I may not be privy to all of the details. If I remember correctly, Nash informed Vince in February of 1996 that he would be accepting a more lucrative deal from Turner to jump to WCW when his contract expired in May of that year. Oddly enough, WWF posted this as a news item on AOL (remember the days when keywords actually meant something?). Even more odd, after Diesel lost to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 12, they named him top contender to HBK’s newly won championship and put Nash in a PPV main event against his friend less than a month before his departure. Granted, it was done to help put over the new champion and make Michaels look like a legit badass (similar to their mentality more recently having Miz beat John Morrison in that Falls Count Anywhere match), but if that were anyone else, the last thing they would have done was keep him on TV, let alone on PPV before jumping over to the competition.

Q: Will pro-wrestlers ever be able to draw the kind of reaction ”Stone Cold” Steve Austin and The Rock got from the crowd? Hell maybe I’m setting the bar too high. Will the likes of Sheamus, Ziggler, McIntyre and Del Rio ever be able to draw the kind of reaction Booker T and Diesel got at the Royal Rumble? – Trust Sakupwanya

A: Yes, someone will come along at some point (where it’s any of those four guys or not) and be the next big breakout star. You could even argue that John Cena is already that guy. That said, make no mistake about it. What Booker and Nash got at the Rumble were pure nostalgia pops. Go back at the end of each of their last runs with the company and tell me if they were getting those kinds of reactions. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Hell, even I popped big for them when they came out, but it’s not like they would be getting reactions even half of that if they were still wrestling on TV a month from now. Ten years from now, if Sheamus was out of the company for a while and made a big return at the Rumble, he too would get a big pop.

Q: At WrestleMania 18, Jim Ross kept referring to The Undertaker as “Booger Red”. What’s the story there? – Ryan Begley

A: Maybe he suffered from constant bloody noses? I don’t really know. I do recall JR possibly saying something about it referring to Taker’s red hair.

Q: I read a section in last weeks “Mailbag” and it talked about closed caption mess-ups. I noticed a couple of weeks ago when I accidentally turned ON the captions during RAW that Michael Cole came up as Vince McMahon??? What the hell? – Jake Hack

A: Uh oh, have we uncovered the true identity of the anonymous Raw GM?

Nash & Booker T Jumping Ship: “They were actually, until a couple days before the (Royal) Rumble, signed with TNA. In essence, they asked for their release at the last second and TNA gave them their wish. I’m going to do what’s best for Kurt Angle and they’ve treated me well here.”

TNA’s Current Roster: “ “We have a stacked roster. We can’t put everybody on a TV show. So, you’re not seeing a lot of the talent week after week. I think they’re going to have to be more consistent about keeping the top talent in there.”

They Revealed, X-Division Tournament Update, 3/3 iMPACT!

13

– On Thursday’s iMPACT!, TNA’s much-hyped “they” group was revealed to be Fortune members AJ Styles, Kazarian and Beer Money, who turned on Immortal and Eric Bischoff. As previously reported, TNA had planned to feature Kevin Nash and Booker T’s in the group, but their returns to WWE at the Royal Rumble forced them to rewrite the entire storyline.

– TNA is now heavily promoting the March 3rd episode of iMPACT. Announced for that show is Karen and Jeff Jarrett renewing their wedding vows and the return of Hulk Hogan. Hogan was supposed to return on last night’s show but was not at this past week’s iMPACT tapings.

TNA covered up for Hogan not being there this week by saying that a “legal ruling” from a judge in Texas in the Hogan-Dixie Carter feud was preventing him from attending iMPACT.

– Jeremy Buck won a match on last night’s iMPACT to advance to an X Division #1 contender’s match at Against All Odds. The winner of Robbie E. vs. Brian Kendrick vs. Suicide on next week’s iMPACT will go to the pay-per-view to face Max Buck and Jeremy Buck in a three-way to crown a new #1 contender.

Dixie Carter Talks Sting-WWE Rumors, Nash & Booker Leaving

11

TNA’s official website has started a new feature where Dixie Carter answers fan questions from TNA’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Here are some of the more newsworthy items:

Q: do you plan on moving the Impact Zone to somewhere else. I believe that keeping it in Universal is crippling the audience numbers.

Dixie: There are no plans to move the production to another single facility. However, we are excited about taking the iMPACT! taping on the road to Fayetteville, NC on February 24th, and hope to do more iMPACT! tapings from different locations in the future.

Q: What has been the biggest mistake you’ve made so far running TNA? I know the list is long but narrow it to 1 if possible.

Dixie: The move to Monday nights. We have a loyal audience on Thursdays and that move proved that. Even the ratings of the Thursday replay (which did not force viewers to watch on Monday), were as high or higher than the debut telecast.

Q: Can you tell me how you felt when you saw Booker T and Kevin Nash at the Royal Rumble and realized your original plans for “THEY” were screwed?

Dixie: Booker was not available for any MEM angle. Kevin Nash was under contract with TNA and was just recently released for reasons I will not disclose. From the beginning, if we did a MEM angle it would not have been with the original group and it would have been a short-term story to get to something else. To see “THEY” tune in TONIGHT on SPIKE. I’m pretty sure the fans will be happy. I know I am.

Q: what’s the truth about the rumors that Sting has left TNA and joined WWE?!

Dixie: I have read these reports. I would really hate to see that happen.

Beth Phoenix Talks Awesome Kong In WWE, Natalya & More

1

WWE Diva Beth Phoenix was interviewed recently by Slam Wrestling.

Here are some highlights of what she said about:

Attending a WWE tryout years ago with Gail Kim & Traci Brooks:

“Gail Kim was signed that day and became women’s champion just a couple of months later. It was crazy how much talent came out of that area, and still is successful to this day, Gail being a WWE diva as well, a former TNA champion, women’s champion.

Her relationship with Natalya:

“One really important thing for me while I was injured was Natalya. Natalya and I are very close, and have been for many, many years, and been there for each other through the thick and thin, the ups and downs of our jobs. She was a wonderful, positive influence on my life. She was going through a lot too with LayCool on television. We were kind of each other’s rock during the rough times. Even the Hitman [Bret Hart] has gone out of his way and given me a lot of encouragement. That meant a lot to me, because he was one of my childhood heroes. It was wonderful to have them motivating me along when the going got tough. That’s why me being able to come back at Survivor Series and share in her title victory meant a lot to me because it was a long road for both of us to get there.”

Awesome Kong in WWE:

“There’s been a lot of chatter around about her being signed by WWE. I think a lot of people, their first inclination is to think that it would be quite a clash to see us in the ring together. If we get that opportunity, it will be amazing. I look forward to it. She and I have never wrestled each other, not even on the independent scene or anything. I think it will be quite the spectacle to have Awesome Kong and Beth Phoenix in the same ring at the same time. Hopefully we’ll get to see that in the near future.

WWE’s Divas division:

“With our company, we have a moniker with the divas: Smart, Sexy and Powerful. Our company is really big on us not just being beautiful, not just being about our looks, but also presenting our girls as role models. Most of our divas are greatly educated and would be happy to talk to you about current events and important issues. I think that we all work hard to be something that little girls want to emulate — not just Barbie dolls, we’re more than that.”

Kevin Nash Talks More About Leaving TNA For WWE

3

WWE star Kevin Nash appeared on Tha O Show with Big Daddy Donnie this week and this to say about the following topics:

The huge reaction he got at the Royal Rumble:

“I wanted to take a steal chair and just sit in the middle of the aisle and take it all in because I said it’s going to be all down hill from here. It couldn’t have been more special. Thank god I was wearing a condom.”

His business relationship with Dixie Carter:

“If I had have walked into an office and went to Dixie and said this is what I want to do and this is what will make me happy, Dixie would have signed off on it in 30 seconds.”

Dixie’s reaction to him in the Royal Rumble:

“She was out of the country. I guarantee you she was happy for my response and happy I was happy.”

Triple H not working the Rumble:

“Paul had no desire at that point [to get in the ring]. He is working in the office and walking around with a clipboard. Vince and Steph feel the company needs his mind more than his body right now. Whenever he comes back though, it’s a game changer. When I found out he [HHH] wasn’t working, I asked if it was the buddysystem [not wanting to steal a pop from Booker T or Nash] and that’s how I took it.”

Whether he has one last run left:

“It’s up to creative. Every guy in the business thinks they have one last run, and the truth is, they do – if creative is in compliance with that. I told them I’d go as hard as I can for as long as I can until I break down.”

His current status:

“I could go back to TNA and wrestle for them tomorrow, they just can’t put me in a video game – oh wait, they don’t have one. They couldn’t do a doll, well they could. They could do a doll [like they did before] with a likeness that Vince owns. They [TNA] put out a doll of me with long brown hair. My contract with them said they would market my TNA likeness. I asked Terry Taylor to show me a picture of when I ever worked in TNA with long brown hair. Jakks said, ‘Sorry it was a dye problem from China.’ You have to look at the doll. Jakks had a 2003 Ruthless Aggression Diesel doll and they slapped a Nash logo on it with the same Diesel head, and it was just bogus man.”

His new WWE Legends deal:

“It has verbiage that says you are subject to wrestle. I looked at it as, I’m making a 5 year commitment that I’m not going anywhere else, and if I do they can’t market any part of me.”

WWE SmackDown Preview For Tonight (No Spoilers)

0

Wade Barrett Talks Being Face vs. Heel, Unscripted Promos

11

Here are some highlights of what The Corre leader Wade Barrett talked about during a recent interview with Postcrescent.com:

Unscripted Promos: “A lot of the times we’re shoved out in front of the camera and I may be out there talking for 10 minutes straight or doing it back and forth with someone for 10 or 15 minutes. A lot of times you are having to ad-lib.”

“There’s no way anybody can memorize all the stuff we have to come out and say. Generally, I’ll have an idea of what’ I’m gonna say, but in terms of crowd interaction and things like that, sometimes the crowd will be chanting stuff at me, so I’ll want to say something in response to that. Sometimes whoever I’m talking with might throw me a curveball – like John Cena’s very good at ad-libbing. He used to throw a lot of curveballs at me when I was out there talking with him, so I have to be very much reactive to what’s going on around me.”

The Most Painful Move He’s Felt In WWE: “That would probably have to be Justin Gabriel’s 450 splash. It’s a spectacular looking move, but the velocity of him spinning around combined with the fact that he’s jumping 10-feet in the air or whatever it is, makes for a very heavy impact. That’s definitely one of the most painful moves I’ve ever had to take.”

Is It Easier To Be A Face Or Heel?: “I think it purely depends on the individual. I know I’ve always felt more comfortable being an antagonist and on the few occasions in my career when I’ve tried to go out and be the fan favorite, back in my days in the U.K., I just never did a good job with it. I was always very bad at getting the fans to get behind me and cheer for me and clap for me, so I knew very early in my career that I would be a better antagonist than protagonist. … Some guys are better fit for certain roles and I think I’m a better fit as a heel.”

Reason For WWE Allowing Mysterio To Handpick Current Feud

10

It was reported Sunday that Rey Mysterio is working through an injury to his rotator cuff. He suffered the injury while working the SmackDown brand’s most recent tour overseas. Doctors advised him not to fly due to an inner ear infection he was suffering from at the time but company officials asked him to work the tour anyway, assuring him that wouldn’t have to work any matches. However, he was asked to wrestle while on tour, and complied, only to suffer an injury to his rotator cuff. There was much acrimony over the circumstances that led to the injury, to the point that creative had no ideas for him when his feud with Alberto Del Rio conclude.

Company officials tried make things up to Mysterio by allowing him to handpick his next opponent, which turned out to be “Dashing” Cody Rhodes. Current plans call for the storyline to continue through WrestleMania, with a likely encounter between the two.

Due to the injury, officials are limiting his in-ring work at television and pay-per-view events, as well as house shows. He’s contained in tag matches when he does work non-televised events. Mysterio is said to be hopeful that he can avoid surgery through rehabilitation.
