DDP In The Running To Host WWE’s “The Best of Nitro” DVD Set

9

World Wrestling Entertainment’s upcoming WCW Monday Nitro themed DVD set is now titled The Best of Nitro. It was previously titled Best of Seasons 1 & 2.

The DVD set is tentatively scheduled for release on May 25, 2010. The change in the title apparently indicates that WWE will not release progressive sets on individual seasons.

Diamond Dallas Page, a three-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion, indicated today on Twitter that he’s in the running to host the video.

DDP wrote, “Just got the Word… Looks like I may be hosting the Best of Nitro coming out on WWE DVDs…Sounds like a Great time… I’ll keep you posted.”

MAILBAG: Recounting Some Infamous Backstage Fights In WWE

17

SEScoops Mailbag for January 21st

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: I was wondering when did Undertaker’s undefeated streak come to light and the writers start taking advantage of it? Was it always planned for someone to build up that kind of record? – Kieran A.

A: I do recall the announcers making mention of Undertaker behind undefeated as early as WrestleMania 12 or 13, but they didn’t really play it up until 2001 on the show where Taker went 9-0 against Triple H. It’s not something they planned in advance, either. At a certain point, they realized he had never been defeated (which is amazing when you consider how many times Taker was beaten by screwjobs and interference through much of the mid-90’s) and were going to use it as a marketing tool for the show each year.

Q: This could be a long shot here, but let me know if you agree with this scenario regarding Daniel Bryan. He seems to be doing nothing but being a pro on NXT right now. This season, the winners get a shot at the Tag titles. Do you believe Bryan and [Derrick] Bateman will win this season so Bryan can be in the same position Miz was in months ago (holding the US and tag titles at once)? This could set up a Miz/Bryan feud and finally give Bryan a direction. Maybe I’m totally over-thinking the situation, but it might explain why Bryan is doing next to nothing these days. – Justin Erickson

A: You’re totally over-thinking the situation. While I would be in favor of elevating Bryan enough to contend for the WWE Title against Miz (and I think if done right, the fans would get behind it too), that’s absolutely not their plan right now. That’s too bad because the heat those two had during their feud felt “real” and often times, that is the best type of emotion to play off of when doing an angle with two guys. It doesn’t feel manufactured. You know these two guys have a history together and you know they hate each other’s guts. I guess they feel the WWE Universe can’t handle that.

Q: With Shawn Michaels being inducted into the Hall of Fame and Triple H returning soon, I see Sean Waltman, Kevin Nash and Scott all say they are going to be there for the ceremony. I was wondering if it would be a huge ratings grabber for WWE if they got all those guys together one more time to form the old Kliq to do something against Nexus. Any thoughts? – Brian O’Connor

A: First off, Waltman is the only one who has said he will be at a ceremony for sure. Nash has said he’d like to be, but if he re-signs with TNA or is still in Costa Rica filming a movie at the time, he won’t be there. I haven’t heard Hall say anything about it one way or the other. Second, this wouldn’t grab any ratings. Hall has no business being on TV after all the opportunities he’s blown and a Kliq reunion that sees them get the better of Nexus (and don’t think for a SECOND they would do anything to help put Nexus over at all because you’re a fool if you do) serves no purpose other than to bury the young guys. WWE does a fine job of that on their own, they don’t need any help.

Q: In 2002, was there ever a plan to have Stone Cold win the Royal Rumble and for The Rock to defeat Chris Jericho that night for the title to have a Rock vs. Stone Cold match at WrestleMania? Or was the plan always to have a returning Triple H win the Rumble and face Jericho at Mania, leaving Rock and Austin to feud with the nWo? – Michael R.

A: I don’t believe WWE had signed Hall, Nash and Hogan to their contracts in time for the Rumble, so they likely did not have any plans set in stone for them just yet without their signatures on the dotted line. I’m fairly certain they would have had Austin in the slot that Rock got against Hogan, but Austin made it quite clear he did not want to work with Hulk. As for yet ANOTHER match with Austin and Rock, that was never the plan. I know they ended up doing it a year later, but they weren’t doing it two years in a row. The plan was for Jericho to have a relatively short reign and put over Triple H for the belt, so that didn’t change.

Q: I was disappointed that Sting was not on WWE’s top 50 greatest list. I know that he is with TNA, but so is Jeff Hardy, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Kurt Angle and a few others. Do you think Sting should of made it?

A: On a list that includes Junkyard Dog, yes I believe Sting should have been part of it. They can claim it’s a WWE-only list now, but that’s not what they were saying before when it was announced and I don’t ever remember Lou Thesz or Gorgeous George wrestling for WWE.

Q: Is Even Bourne going to be coming back anytime soon? He left when CM Punk and Edge traded brands, due an injury if memory serves, and I don’t remember hearing anything about him since then. – Christoff

A: Yes, Evan is targeting a late February/early March return to the ring following shoulder surgery he underwent in October to repair a torn rotator cuff. As a matter of fact, he and Triple H are both advertised for the 3/19 live event at Madison Square Garden. Perhaps they will return as a tag team wearing tassles and neon spandex a la The Rockers. I’d pay to see that.

Q: You have mentioned numerous times on your podcast about how great War Games matches are, but which match did you think was the best ever? – Daniel

A: Check out the War Games match with Sting’s Squadron against The Dangerous Alliance from “Wrestle War” 1992. The nWo vs. WCW one from “Fall Brawl” 1996 was pretty good, too. Avoid the one from 1995 like you would the Ebola virus.

Q: In the first ever Mailbag and the most recent one, it was said that Edge & Christian are brothers. However, Wikipedia says they were childhood friends and doubting Wikipedia’s intelligence is like doubting Shawn Michaels’ wrestling ability. Also, on SmackDown when E&C met for the first time after Christian’s return, Edge said they have known each other since the 6th grade. Now, throw your knowledge on that. – Addam Azkaban

A: No such thing was said in the first mailbag, or any mailbag for that matter. Not from this website. Edge and Christian are FRIENDS in real life. They grew up together and both watched wrestling. When Christian followed Edge to WWE, the STORYLINE was that they were brothers. They said this on the air for years until recently when they decided to acknowledge them on the air as friends and not brothers, basically dismissing their own storyline. You see, yet another reason to hate WWE’s lack of storyline continuity. Not only does it make for bad TV, but it makes me have to answer the same question over and over.

Q: Was there any heat on Owen Hart after he injured Stone Cold Steve Austin? Do you feel that Owen could have been as big of a star as his brother if he didn’t die? – Joe Rampage

A: To the best of my knowledge, Owen had no heat with anyone in management over what happened. They looked at it for what it was, an accident. That said, Steve Austin did have heat with Owen over what happened and the fact that Owen never bothered to call him after it happened to apologize or check in. Even Bret has said Owen was wrong for that. I don’t believe Owen ever would have been as big a star as Bret if he hadn’t died. Could he have been a World champion? Sure, a short reign as a heel to help transition the title to the babyface. But he was already 34 years-old at the time of his death with plans to retire in the not-too-distant future. It just wasn’t going to happen.

Q: Why did JR only announce the main event at WrestleMania 15? – NateOB

A: Jim Ross had suffered his second bout with Bells Palsy only a few months earlier and was taken off TV during that time. They did the short-lived “heel JR” angle with Dr. Death shortly before Mania, but that was quickly dropped. Steve Austin and The Rock, who were wrestling in the main event that night, both went to Vince McMahon and made it clear they wanted Ross to call their match, which is why Michael Cole walked off and was replaced by JR. Conversely, at last year’s WrestleMania, both Shawn Michaels and Undertaker went to Vince and asked that Ross call their match and they were turned down. JR, who was in attendance and could have easily called the match, instead sat up in one of the luxury boxes and watched HBK’s final match from afar.

Q: I don’t know about everyone else, but I couldn’t help but notice that Tyson Kidd’s ‘bodyguard’ Jackson Andrews hasn’t been seen since he received a ‘World’s Strongest Slam’ from Mark Henry a few weeks ago. I didn’t hear anything about him being released or sent down, so what’s the deal? – Superstar Nick Adams

A: Someone realized he was too green and wasn’t ready to be on TV, so he was sent back down to FCW. Mason Ryan, beware.

Q: I was wondering if you have any information about some infamous backstage fights that happened in WWE. Can you name a few? – Mark

A: Way back in 1992, Vince McMahon was attacked and nearly choked out by Kevin Wacholz (Nailz) over what Wacholz perceived to be a low payoff from his appearance that year at Summerslam. He would later claim that McMahon tried to sexually assault him during the incident, but no one believed him. In 1997, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels got into it once at a Raw taping, possibly in the bathroom, which resulted in Bret walking away with a clump of HBK’s hair. Vince McMahon had to go on the air that night and inform the audience that due to unprofessional conduct, neither man would be appearing on the show. Of course, later that same year in Montreal, Bret knocked out Vince McMahon with a punch and Davey Boy Smith hyperextended his knee in trying to drag his son Shane away from the ensuing scuffle. In 2003, Chris Jericho famously confronted Bill Goldberg backstage at Raw over comments Bill had made about him and when they got into it, Jericho took him down with a front facelock. In 2004, Eddie Guerrero and Kurt Angle got into an altercation at a Smackdown taping after the final segment of the show. As they came through the curtain, they exchanged words in front of everyone with Angle taking Eddie to the ground before being pulled off by some of the agents. In 2006, Booker T and Batista got into a brawl that Booker dominated and Vince McMahon actually refused to put the title back on Batista for quite some time after that, losing respect for him getting beaten so badly. Let us not also forget Stocky Balboa (Joey Styles) knocking down JBL with a punch to the jaw while overseas in Iraq for Tribute to the Troops in 2008. Boys will be boys.

Undertaker’s Return, Cena & Triple H’s Next Movies, JR-Swagger

8

– The Undertaker has been announced for the WrestleMania 27 Axxess event in Atlanta this year. Taker will be meeting fans and signing autographs on Saturday, April 2nd for VIP ticketholders.

Other stars who will be making VIP appearances include Edge, Randy Orton, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, John Cena, Rey Mysterio and The Miz with Alex Riley.
like he’s going to get that opportunity.

– John Cena and Triple H will be starring in two new WWE Studios films, set to be released later this year. Blood Brothers starring John Cena and Inside Out starring Triple H are both scheduled to be released between September and November.

– Speaking of Triple H, he will be interviewed for an upcoming episode of VH1’s Rock Docs show that will profile Motorhead lead singer Lemmy. Triple H and Lemmy are longtime friends and as many know, Triple H’s theme music is performed by Motorhead.

– Part of the reason WWE had Jim Ross do the off-air segment with Jack Swagger at Tuesday’s SmackDown tapings in Oklahoma was so that the crowd, Swagger’s home state crowd, wouldn’t boo Kofi Kingston in their match t hat followed the JR segment. The idea was to have Swagger put down Jim Ross, who they knew would get a big reaction.

Hulk Hogan Invites NFL Star To Wrestle, Jeff Hardy Loses Bag

10

— The TNA crew has arrived overseas of the company’s UK tour and and Jeff Hardy’s trip is already off to a rough start. Hardy tweeted that his bag has been lost.

— ESPN.com has posted an interview with TNA star Hulk Hogan, who talked about the viral video of New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott cutting a wrestling promo after Sunday’s win over the New England Patriots. Hogan, a childhood hero of Bart Scott, said the NFL star’s post-game interview was clearly inspired by wrestling interviews.

“It was like one of my mid-’80s promos, and all that was missing were a few ‘What are you gonna dos?’ and some lightning bolts in there. It was right on the money. I think it’s cool that [Scott] is stepping up and showboating it a bit, because it’s about personality and entertaining people, too.

I could tell Bart had been watching wrestling, and it’s pretty cool because a lot of these guys are afraid to step outside the box. … Sometimes when you say stuff you believe it and it happens.”

When asked whether Scott could have a future in pro wrestling once his professional football days are over, Hogan said:

“Oh yeah. When his career’s over and he wants to make some real money, tell him to give me a call and we’ll break him in the right way.”

Here’s the video of Bart Scott’s promo:

Triple H’s Career Winding Down, Stephanie Update & More

36

The general feeling within WWE that Triple H is going to be winding down his in-ring career this year and will be focusing more on the company’s corporate operations. Aside from starring in his own WWE Studios project (The Chaperone), Triple H has been learning the ins and outs of WWE’s marketing division as of late.

On a related note, it’s said that Stephanie McMahon is traveling less these days as she’s taking care of their three daughters at home. Stephanie is still on call but isn’t in the office as much and isn’t attending WWE tapings as frequently as last year.

SmackDown writer Michael Hayes and RAW’s Brian Gewirtz have assumed creative power behind the scenes, with Stephanie scaling back her duties to raise her young children.

Check out this recent picture of Triple H and Stephanie with their daughter poolside:

JR Blog: Savage-WWE HOF, Batista & Lawler In The Rumble?

3

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Batista In The Royal Rumble? “An emailer to this site asked me if I thought Batista would be back for the Royal Rumble and my guess is no. Dave has been filming a movie out of the country plus preparing to launch a long awaited, much anticipated MMA career with Strikeforce sometime in 2011 as I understand it. With that said, would it be a shocker to see Batista be of the 40 men in the Rumble match….perhaps….a mild one. Any thing’s possible these days and the biz is short on star power.”

Randy Savage In WWE’s Hall Of Fame: “A Twitter follower @JRsBBQ asked the obligatory Randy Savage questions that we get inundated with at this time of the year. There’s a video of Macho Man on line with him talking about the WWE’s Wrestling All Stars video game which is due to be released on March 29 but Savage going into the WWE HOF this year would surprise me. HBK is this year’s headliner and even though Savage had a distinguished, HOF level career he would also be a headliner and not a supporting role player IMO. Look at it any way you choose but each year there is only one headliner at the WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The year that I was inducted in 2007 Dusty Rhodes was the headliner.”

Jerry Lawler In The Royal Rumble: “An emailer hoped that Jerry Lawler would win the Royal Rumble match and I’m not aware that King is going to even be in the Rumble. One thing that I can say is that Jerry is as popular as virtually any wrestler in WWE right now due to recent events which speaks to two points. One, Jerry is extremely talented and, two, it speaks to the issue of the lack of main event depth currently in the wrestling biz in general.”

Taz Talks About iMPACT! On The Road, TNA vs. WWE & More

1

TNA color commentator & former ECW World Champion Taz was one of the featured guests on this week’s live edition (01/17/11) of the award-winning Monday Night Mayhem.

Taz Discusses The Launch Of His New Dojo (The Team Taz Finishing Camp), His Response To Those That Feel His New Venture Is Direct Competition To Florida Championship Wrestling/The WWE’s Developmental System, TNA’s Decision To Take iMPACT On The Road Beginning Next Month, The Importance of Taking The Televised TNA Product On The Road, What TNA Hoped For When Putting iMPACT On Monday Nights Last Year/What The Company Learned From The Experiment, The Professional Differences Between The WWE & TNA, What He Would Do To Differentiate TNA From The WWE Even More, Why Ring Of Honor Losing Their HDNet Television Show Is Bad For The Business, & The Real Story Behind The History-Making Night When He Captured The ECW World Heavyweight Championship From Mike Awesome While Under WWE Contract

You can listen to an MP3 of Taz on Monday Night Mayhem by clicking here.

Interview highlights courtesy of The Mayhem’s official correspondent, Paterson from New Jersey:

The launch of his new dojo (The Team Taz Finishing Camp), what his time in the industry has taught him leading: into the launch of his newest venture, & what students can expect if trained by Taz: “The Team Taz Dojo basically encompasses everything I’ve done in my career (from ECW, to WWE, to currently TNA), because I’ve been fortunate enough to feel that I’ve learned so much about this industry about what a performer needs to do and not do in front of the curtain and behind the curtain. I’ve done a lot of the right things business wise, and I’ve done some bad things business wise, so that helps me become a better instructor to help the new generation of wrestler. The deal with my dojo is you’re dealing directly with me. This is not ‘the blind leading the blind,’ or ‘this is one of Taz’s guys…he worked out with him.’ I’m the guy that’s gonna sit there with you and break down your matches with you.”

Why he believes that TNA’s decision to take impact on the road to Fayetteville, NC for an upcoming set of television tapings next month is “well overdue” & the importance of taking the televised TNA product on the road: “I think us going to do TV on the road is something that’s well overdue. Even well before I was a member of TNA, I really think this was something that TNA should have done. It’s a lot harder to pull this off than people know. We are going to shoot TV on the road. It’s not a cheap thing, but I think Dixie (Carter) realizes that it’s something that needs to be done. They are very nice people in The iMPACT Zone, the people that come to the show, but it’s a completely different feel than when you go to a TNA live event and then you watch the audience or hear the audience on television. It’s a completely different feel. The people in The iMPACT Zone, and no knock on them, they’ve seen a lot. We put out a lot out in front of them. They get a little spoiled, and that’s only normal I think.”

What he feels are the biggest professional differences between TNA & the WWE: “It’s a different world in TNA. WWE has been around for over 50 years, so it’s like how do you prepare a company that’s been in business for 8 1/2 half years like TNA has? I knew that coming in that it was a smaller company when it comes to that, obviously since it’s a younger company. The only thing that I see that we could get better at is the amount of man power we have, and that’s just needing more bodies behind the scenes to do more things. But that comes in time.”

More is contained in Taz’s exclusive interview, including his candid thoughts & comments on the recent controversy that has stirred up online between those believing that Taz’s dojo is direct competition vs. the WWE’s forthcoming “Tough Enough” program & FCW, what TNA hoped for when putting iMPACT on Monday nights last year vs. the WWE & what the company learned from the experiment, what he would do to differentiate TNA from the WWE even more, which talents in TNA have asked him for guidance since he came into the fold, why Ring of Honor losing their HDNet television show is bad for the business, what he sees from the younger generation of wrestlers today & what they may lack, the real story behind the history-making night that took place when Taz (while performing under WWE contract) won the ECW World Heavyweight Championship from the late Mike Awesome (while performing under a WCW contract) with MNM’s very own Jim Molineaux calling it down the middle, plus so much more! Follow Taz right now on Twitter (at www.Twitter.com/OfficialTaz), and be sure to log on to www.TeamTaz13.com to find out the complete details on how you can register to be trained by “The Human Suplex Machine” at the Team Taz Finishing Camp.

JR Blog: 40-Man Rumble, Who Will Induct HBK, TNA

13

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross has updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsBarBQ.com. Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

The 40-Man Royal Rumble: “Been asked tons of questions of what I think about the 40 Royal Rumble match…up 10 men from years past. Many ‘experts’ have already analyzed this ‘biggest ever’ Rumble match but I’m not that bright. I need to see it play out before I can judge it. Once I see the Rumble on PPV from Boston, which is and has been sold out for weeks, I will better be able to share how I like or don’t like the 40 man format.

The impromptu battle royal or Rumble match preview on Raw was of the ‘bowling shoe’ variety. It did however establish that 400+ pound Mark Henry should be a factor in the Rumble bout. ”

Is TNA The New WCW?: “No. Comparing the Turner Network that aired WCW back in the day ala TBS and TNT isn’t a fair comparison to the Spike Network. TNT was, as best as I recall, one of the top 1-3 cable networks in existence back in those days while Spike isn’t even in the top 15 cable networks in today’s marketplace.  Some of the on air and in ring talents are the same but I’m not so sure that’s such a good thing either. I have many old friends who work for TNA and for their sake and for the sake of the biz in general I hope that TNA does well.

For those fans who theorize that TNA will eventually ‘kick WWE’s ass’ those folks need to lay off the ‘magic mushrooms.’ It’s not about ‘kicking WWE’s ass’ for TNA. ”

Who Will Induct Shawn Michaels: “Several have asked who was inducting HBK into the WWE Hall of Fame, and by the way ticket sales for the HOF Ceremony are brisk, and I don’t know but I do know that it’s Shawn’s call. Personally, I would like to see HHH do it because I know that the former DX guys are legit friends and have great respect for each other’s work. That’s just my two cents. “

Chris Jericho Talks WWE Return, New Stars, TNA, Edge & More

13

Pro Wrestling Illustrated interview excerpts with Chris Jericho
Interview conducted by Al Castle in December
Full interview available Prowrestlingillustrated.blogspot.com.

On whether he’ll return to WWE: “As of right now I don’t see myself returning to WWE any time soon. That’s not to say that I’ll never return, but I have no plans, no schedule, no time line for it. Every fan that I see is like, ‘Hey when are you coming back? What’s going? What are you doing?’ And I’ve never really thought that far ahead. As far as I know right now, I don’t have any plans to come back any time in the near future. Sorry if that disappoints anybody!”

On his departure coming at a time when WWE’s roster was already thin: “That’s their responsibility. That’s their issue. And I think it’s better for them if they lose a lot of top guys, because then they don’t rely on the same thing over and over again. They’re forced to make changes. They’re forced to use new guys. They’re forced to move forward, which is something they could have done a couple years ago, but they really didn’t. So now they have no choice….

“It forces them to take a chance with some guys. You know, that’s the bad thing about the business nowadays. Before there were always lots of guys in other countries, and guys climbing up the ranks, and guys that had experience who weren’t with WWE. Now the way that it works is that all your guys are in WWE, and that’s it. And a lot of those guys don’t have a lot of experience, but that’s just the way the business has moved nowadays. So they’re forced to take a chance on guys who they might not have taken a chance on before… So good for them.”

On the changing landscape in wrestling: “Now you guys who have five, six, seven, eight years experience working at the top of the top, whereas before you had guys who 15 years experience or 20 years experience. You just might never have that anymore. It’s one of those things where the whole game has changed now the curve will now maybe drop. And what used to be a three star match five years ago, just may end up being the five star match of the future, because you just might not be able to replace that ever. You just don’t have guys like with that experience and it’s not built that way anymore. It’s kind of sad in a lot of ways.”

On Kevin Nash’s criticism of WWE’s youth movement: “There’s still a place for guys who are older and it’s not necessary to just take care of the young guys. You are who you are. There are guys who are better in their 40s than in their 30s. There are guys who are done by the time they’re 25, 26, 27 years old. So you can’t really say, ‘Well this guy can work until he’s 45, and this guy can work until he’s 50.’ Everybody’s got a certain shelf life.

“Some guy’s shelf life is longer than others. That’s why you always have to have young guys come in. You always have to have big drafts come in. And you can’t keep guys on top just because they have name value. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. You have to be able to entertain and you have to be able to provide the certain quality of work that they’re you’re always used to. Just because a certain somebody had name value in 1999 when wrestling was quote-unquote hot, doesn’t mean they necessarily should be on top in 2010.”

On TNA’s struggles to grow its audience: “I just think a company with that much talent should be doing better than they are. They’ve had the same ratings for the last three years. It’s just unacceptable with the amount of talent they have there, just as a business. I run my own business as well. I run the business of ‘Fozzy.’ And if somebody’s not performing and we’re not getting bigger, than something has to change.

“So I just wish they would look at it that way, instead of relying on the same old things and the same old people. They’ve been trying different things and something isn’t clicking. They’ve had the same million and a half viewers for the last three years. Just as an outsider looking in—as any business owner looking in—if you had the same return or the same results after three years, maybe you might want to try something different to make it grow.”

On working with Edge last year: “The Edge babyface character last year at WrestleMania was getting over. It took a while because Edge was such a hated heel. You can’t just turn into a rah-rah babyface in five or six months. It takes time for people to sort of trust you. And they were behind him, even to the point where we worked a couple of shows after that when he was already a heel, and by proxy became baby face because he was working with me.

“And people were into him as a babyface. It just took time. For whatever reason Vince got an itchy trigger finger and decided to switch him back heel. But it would have worked. Now people don’t know how to trust. They don’t know if they trust the good guy or the bad guy, the way they’ve changed him.”

On turning heel and abandoning Y2J: “For me, I was so over the whole Y2J thing. I just couldn’t even stand it. I just wanted to get completely different and change it completely. If you look back at that time, nobody was doing that. Nobody was coming out and being serious and not smiling. Nobody was wearing a suit. And that’s why I did it.

“And now every heel is coached to be that way. Be silent. Be straight. Because it worked. So now it’s the prerequisite for a WWE heel. But if you go back to 2007, nobody did that. And I have no problem saying that. I’m not saying I was the first guy to do it. But I’m saying I was the first guy to do it in that company and at that time. So if I was there now, I’d almost have to change it again, because everybody’s doing it now, you know what I mean?”

On his dedication to being hated by fans: “I took it to the next level. There were no catch phrases…There became some by proxy from the stuff that I said. But I never set out to make ‘I’m the best in the world at what I do’ or “shameless pandering” a catch phrase. I mean, who would ever think that “gelatinous parasite” would be a catch phrase?… I never wanted to have a catch phrase. I didn’t want merchandise. There’s no Chris Jericho merchandise. There’s no Chris Jericho T-shirt. All that stuff was because of me. They wanted to make a T-shirt, but I said, ‘Why? Why would I want someone wearing a T-shirt in the crowd that has my name on it? That’s one guy in the crowd that’s not going to boo me.’ It’s an art form to be a heel and to stay a heel. Because the best characters of all times are villains. Darth Vader. Terminator. Hannibal Lector. Freddy Kruger.

“And all those villains turned babyface because they were so entertaining. Each one of those guys I said in the second or third movie became a good guy. If Heath Ledger hadn’t passed away, he would have been a good guy in the next Batman movie, guaranteed, because he was too entertaining. So it’s easier to make people hate you than to make them love you. But it’s very, very difficult to make them stay hating you, and I was able to do that for two and a half years.”

On his losing streak near the end of his WWE run: “As far as losing, the only guys who were really stuck on the losing were guys who were reporting on it. Most of the losses were my idea. It’s not like there was anything going on behind the scenes. Once again, we’re at a time where you have a lot of young guys and you’ve got to build them up quickly, so you have them win. I could lose every night. I can lose to you. You think anybody’s going to care? Nobody… I was one of the few guys that could do that make that work. Once again, that was a challenge. Wins and losses mean nothing if you know how to do them properly.”

On not being overly critical of anyone in his new book: “I’m not going to go out of my way to verbally bash them. A book is not a place to settle a vendetta. That’s for sure. I tell the stories as I see fit. And when I was editing it, I did dial back some things, because you don’t want to be mean. Mean is mean. But I’m very honest about the things I went through. And in this book there’s a lot of that stuff. When I first got to WWE, it was a political quagmire. There was so much stuff that I faced that I never expect to face. Look back on my career. The first six months that I was there they basically didn’t do anything. I was just a guy. So I talk about all that stuff in the book, as I should. And I don’t pull any punches. But I don’t go out of my way to be mean or bitter or anything. I just tell the story as it is.”

On the WWE Hall of Fame, and those who think it’s a farce: “Anybody who says, ‘It’s all a work,’ is probably somebody who’s not in there, you know what I mean? To not be in the hall of fame, you think, ‘Oh, who cares?’ But I think anybody who is in the Hall of Fame probably thinks it’s pretty cool. For me, I think I’d be a little bit embarrassed that all of these people were there cheering for me for the work I did in the past.

“Like I said, I’ve never really thought of the past. I always think of the future. I think it would be an honor to be in the Hall of Fame, but I think I’d be very, very embarrassed to be up there talking about how great I am, or how great I’m perceived as being, or how great I am on that night. I think that’s one of the reasons I like writing books. I can tell the good things that I’ve done, and also really focus and call myself on the carpet for all the bad things I’ve done as well. So yeah, the Hall of Fame is a huge honor. I hope I’m in it someday. But I’d almost be scared to show up. I might not even go. (laughs)”

On WWE’s “50 Greatest Superstars” DVD and his #25 ranking: “I think it’s just a gimmick, promotional thing to sell DVDs. I think when you look at that list, it’s pretty crazy all the way through and there’s really no rhyme or reason to the way they’re ranked, with the exception of the first one (Shawn Michaels). Any list where Hogan is at number 20 or something like that, it’s making more of a political statement than anything. But I think if you take the top 25 guys of all time, maybe I could have done a little bit better. Top 20 maybe. But I definitely don’t see myself in the top 10 of all time. But any time you can be included in something like that—I’d rather be at number 25 than at number 51 and not make the cut.”

On dedicating himself to acting and music rather that wrestling:
“I see myself doing a lot more of that in the future as well. I think at this stage in my career, it’s going to transition more to just being Fozzy and doing more of the hosting and acting thing. I think that’s another reason why the wrestling fans are mad at me, because they’re starting to realize that when I say I might not come back, they’re starting to see the result of that, and saying, ‘Well, jeez. He might actually be serious and not be pulling a typical wrestling thing where they keep coming back.’ And I’m not saying that’s not going to happen. But the way things are going right now, the road isn’t taking me down that path right now.”

On being an affable game show host on Downfall while also playing a heel in WWE: “I’m an actor, and I have to play the part of Chris Jericho in WWE. It’s like Anthony Hopkins doesn’t walk down the street eating people’s livers with a fine Chianti and a straight jacket. It’s a character he played in a movie and he’s more than capable of playing two or three different characters at the same time as they shoot two or three different movies.

“And I played the character of Chris Jericho in WWE and outside of WWE there is no character, unless I’m doing another movie. But, Downfall, that was myself. I was playing myself. I never ever, ever once went into the ring as they guy that’s talking to you right now. I became somebody else, because that’s what wrestling is—from day one for me. It’s not athletic. It’s not a sport. Not even close. You have to be an athlete, but there’s no scoring goals and all that sort of thing. It’s show business, man. One hundred percent.”

On not having a big send off at the end of his wrestling career: “I don’t ever want that big, overblown, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair goodbye. I don’t want it. Good for those guys that got it. I don’t want it. If I never wrestle another day, I wouldn’t feel bad about the fact that I never got my last applause and got to ride off into the sunset. I’m a bad guy. Bad guys are cowards. Bad guys die at the end of movies. And that’s it. You never see them again. That’s what I want to happen to me. I want to fall off the building like the dude in Die Hard and scream ‘Aaaah!’ all the way down. And it’s like, ‘That guy was a loser. I’m glad he’s dead.’ That’s what my mindset is. Although, I don’t want the ‘dead’ part to happen.”

There’s a lot more in the hour-plus long interview, including Jericho’s thoughts on WWE using NXT and Tough Enough to recruit new talent, Paul Heyman’s strong points as a booker, reflecting on his “vanity project” comment about Dixie Carter and TNA, his memorable feuds with Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio and Rick Steamboat, why Jerry Lawler wasn’t included in the WrestleMania 25 legends handicapped match, and who Vince McMahon originally wanted in that match instead of Steamboat.

Mason Ryan Still Green, Upcoming SD Feud, New Talent

16

– We reported earlier this week that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon is being considered for a role on the new season of Tough Enough, which begins the night after WrestleMania. RAW star William Regal is also being considered for the show and would serve as one of the coaches, similar to Al Snow’s role on the original show.

– WWE has signed Mexican wrestler El Hijo de Medico Asesino to a developmental deal. He’s expected to head to Florida Championship Wrestling in the coming weeks.

– Following last week’s brutal beatdown of the Big Show by Wade Barrett’s new group on SmackDown, a feud between the 7 foot giant and Ezekiel Jackson is in the works.

– Sources from WWE developmental note that Mason Ryan is still considered green in the ring and on the mic. Ryan is generally well liked by his peers and understands he’s still at the beginning of what looks to be a promising career. According to a WWE source, when Mason Ryan won the Florida Championship Wrestling title last summer, he didn’t understand why he was being pushed so hard over other developmental talents that he thought were farther along than him.

— It was reported yesterday that the website for the JQH Arena at Missouri State University, which hosts a Raw live event on Friday, March 11, was advertising a WWE Championship Match between John Cena and CM Punk. “Fandy Orton” was also advertised to face The Miz in a non-title match. Information for the event has been corrected as Orton will face The Miz in a WWE Championship Match while Cena will face Punk in a non-stipulated match. Orton’s first name was also corrected. Update On UFC Fighter Roy Nelson’s WWE Negotiations

5
UFC Heavyweight Roy Nelson
UFC Heavyweight Roy Nelson

As previously reported, UFC heavyweight fighter Roy “Big Country” Nelson has expressed interest in working for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Related News:

To update this story, we can report that Nelson’s people were in talks with WWE’s John Laurinaitis earlier this month. It’s said that Nelson had no idea of what working for WWE would be like and he just heard the high price tag that Brock Lesnar might get for a return so he became interested. The talks with Laurinaitis stopped after he became unavailable and unresponsive to the inquiries from Nelson’s camp.

Vince McMahon has said that he’s not interested in using MMA fighters who have had success in the sport because they can still make money without dealing with WWE’s schedule.

Back in 2006, Vince offered Bob Sapp a seven-figure contract and the ECW Title. Sapp turned the offer down, mainly not wanting to deal with WWE’s schedule. The spot was eventually given to Bobby Lashley.

Low Ki Talks About Politics In WWE, Asking For His Release

17

Former WWE wrestler Low-Ki was interviewed this week by Darren Wood of Slam Wrestling. Here are some highlights of what Low Ki said about:

His WWE Release: “I can’t comment on other guys who have left or wanted their release. But if you’re not happy there then just leave, simple as that. I’ve had a good relationship with them [WWE] the entire time I was there regardless of what people may think. I have always had strong relationships everywhere I have gone; there are no bad feelings from either end.”

His Past Working Against Him In WWE: “I took a different path to most of the guys who are coming into WWE now and I think because I made a name for myself outside of the company, they didn’t like that,” he theorized. “I can’t and couldn’t ever be recognized as a WWE guy. I was never made by the company and I do think that was an issue. This is the biggest company in the world but they don’t have that stamp on me because I made a name for myself all around the world before entering. They would much rather take pride in saying they created you and I think that went against me.”

Politics In WWE: “WWE is a very big political game, and I already knew what the environment entailed, if you play that political game you stand a much better chance of succeeding in a particular role or position. I’m not a politician; I don’t see the need in playing these games especially when the business is suffering. If you don’t fill in that particular prototype or that idea then you are going to have a more challenging time in regards to a push or trying to excel. I feel this was the case with me; they have always been more about bigger guys. The company could have been behind me a lot more. They also could be behind a lot of guys more.”

Shaul Guerrero Works FCW This Week, Maria Kanellis Update

3

– WWE developmental diva Shaul Marie Guerrero, daughter of Eddie and Vickie Guerrero, sang the National Anthem and did ring announcing at last night’s FCW live event in Florida.

Also on that show, new Nexus member and FCW Champion Mason Ryan defeated former NXT Rookie Percy Watson.

– During an interview with Final Bell Radio earlier this week, former WWE Diva Maria Kanellis had the following to say about the upcoming DivaMania tour, also featuring former WWE Divas Jillian Hall and Tiffany:

“We’re going to visit different bars, clubs, and do signings and hang with fans. It’s going to be the three of us back on the road. It’s going to be more of a relaxed atmosphere, not so structured. We’re just going to go out there and have a good time. We’ll go to a club and host a party and go up with the DJ and play songs. Maybe we can get Jillian to get up there and sing, and Tiffany loves to dance. If you’ve ever seen a club that is hosted by one of the Kardashian sisters or Rihanna, that’s what it’s going to be.”

Ultimate Warrior & Hulk Hogan On WWE All Stars Box Art

WWE All Stars Box Cover Art
WWE All Stars Box Cover Art

– Former WWE ring announcer Howard Finkel wrote on Twitter this week that he’s at the video game developer’s studio putting the finishing touches on the ring announcing sound effects for the upcoming WWE All Stars video game.

– While Randy Savage working with WWE’s new All Stars video game is certainly newsworthy, it’s now come out that Savage has been working directly with THQ, not WWE. This is similar to how Savage worked with toy maker Mattel (and not WWE) for his new WWE-branded action figure.

– The cover art has been released for the WWE All Stars game and reveals 3 more members of the roster not previously announced – Randy Orton, the Ultimate Warrior and TNA star Hulk Hogan.

WM27 News: Edge’s Opponent, Christian Update, Ticket Sales

27

– SmackDown rising star Alberto Del Rio has been discussed as World Heavyweight champion Edge’s likely opponent at WrestleMania 27 on 4/3.  WWE is firmly behind Del Rio and company officials are very satisfied with how he’s handling his current push.

Former Intercontinental champion Dolph Ziggler, Edge’s Royal Rumble opponent, has also been discussed as a possible opponent for WrestleMania.

– The latest on Christian is that he probably will not be healthy in time to work a match at WrestleMania. He suffered a torn pectoral muscle back in late September, had surgery to repair the tear and has been rehabbing ever since. Initial reports stated he’d be out of action for approximately 6 months (until late March).

– WWE Hall of Famers Bobby Heenan and Harley Race have been invited to WrestleMania 27. Jim Ross recently mentioned that Race was confirmed to be attending the event.

– It’s interesting to note that WWE has not yet mentioned how many tickets have been sold for WrestleMania 27. In previous years, they have touted early strong ticket sales, which doesn’t seem like a great sign.

Linda McMahon Comments On Running For Senate Again

11

The New York Times published an article this week looking at former WWE CEO Linda McMahon’s political future and whether she will run for United States Senate again in 2012. Based on public comments she’s made in recent months, speculation from political pundits and the tremendous amount of personal wealth she still has (despite spending upwards of $50 million of her own money in her unsuccessful 2010 campaign), the New York Times thinks there’s still a strong chance of her giving it another shot. You can read the NYT piece at this link.

Earlier this week, Connecticut Senator Joseph Leiberman announced that he is retiring and will not be seeking another term in 2012. Linda McMahon posted the following statement on her official Facebook Page regarding Leiberman’s retirement and whether she will make another run for that job:

“Senator Lieberman announced today that he will not seek re-election. I believe he deserves our respect and appreciation for bringing a strong, independent and principled voice to Washington. Many people have asked me what my plans are. While running for the U.S. Senate in 2012 remains an option for me, I will spend …the next few months focusing on how I can best serve the people of Connecticut.”

*Spoiler* On TNA’s “They” Storyline – Several Returns Expected

26

Last Thursday on TNA iMPACT!, Amazing Red’s “little” brother (officially known as “Crimson”) put Abyss in a chokehold backstage and delivered a cryptic message to him: “They are coming.”

“They” will mark the return of the Main Event Mafia and will consist of Kurt Angle and Scott Steiner, and possibly Sting, Kevin Nash and Booker T.

Steiner returned to TNA at last Wednesday’s iMPACT! taping and participated in a cliff hanger ending. He donned a suit reminiscent of his time in the Main Event Mafia. Angle is penciled in for the group, and many within the organization expect Sting to be too.

Many in TNA presume that Nash is on board for the group. However, he adamantly said last week on Twitter that he is not because he is retired. Internally, many believe Nash is kayfabing his absence from TNA, but those close to him indicate he’s legitimately retired.

Booker T’s status remains unknown at this point, other than he wasn’t believed to have signed as of last week. Some were pleased with his departure from the organization in October 2009 as there were complaints about his performance, attitude, refusal to put over Matt Morgan in a match, and his own admission that he was using the company as a way to audition for acting roles.

Bobby Lashley has been mentioned by those in TNA as a possible member of the group. However, those affiliated with the mixed martial artist don’t believe he’s returning to the wrestling organization. Lashley is currently a free agent as his contract with Strikeforce expired following his loss to Chad Griggs in August. The only thing of note he has done since then is work a wrestling match for the Japanese promotion Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) in September. He is not tentatively not scheduled for any upcoming shows.

“They” would initially feud with Immortal and Fortune. The angle begins on the Feb. 3 iMPACT!.

Matt Hardy Bringing His Alter-Ego To TNA, TNA Draws Sellout

22

— Creative plans are in place for Matt Hardy to perform as the “cold blooded” alter-ego he introduced a few months ago on Twitter. He will be referred to as “Cold Blood” Matt Hardy. He said this week on Twitter that the persona is returning soon.

The organization recently applied a wrestling-related trademark to the term “Cold Blood.”

— Friday’s TNA Wrestling live event in Reading, PA, drew approximately 1,000 fans. Saturday’s show in Upper Marlboro, MD, drew 688 fans. Sunday in Hagerstown, MD, drew a sellout crowd of 1,350 fans, the first legitimate sellout for a TNA live event in a while.

— TNA Wrestling officials are still negotiating with Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) regarding utilizing Zorro. A deal is expected to be reached and that he’ll perform under a different name.
