Taz Blogs About ECW Shutting Down, Criticizes Vince

10

ECW original and TNA announcer Taz has posted a message on his Facebook.com page regarding Vince McMahon’s announcement that ECW is shutting down once and for all in 3 weeks.

Last night on Twitter, Taz wrote “thank god” WWE’s version of ECW is done and sarcastically called McMahon not thanking Paul Heyman or the ECW originals a “classy” move. On Facebook, Taz explains exactly what bothered him about McMahon’s announcement:

“Point is, why not acknowledge the Paul Heymens contributions to the industry? Or, saying thanks to all the ECW original wrestlers? A lot of blood, sweat and tears were dropped during the original ECW’s life! If you are going to thank cameramen & directors (etc) than acknowledge the past history because its well deserved.

Even if Vince McMahon did not feel Paul Heyman and the ECW originals deserved to be acknowledged, Taz feels Vince once again left money on the table by not getting the most out of an asset he bought:

“If you utilized the letters ECW to make a lot of $$$ over the past several years I would assume that your respect the history of ECW? If you would produce and sell a successful DVD documenting the companies history…I would assume you feel that the original ECW history has value….than why not give it a proper send off?”

He concluded the message by saying he’s happy the ECW letters are being retired, as they deserve to rest in peace. Visit Facebook.com to read the full blog.

He posted several other tweets commenting on the show, but they have all since been deleted.

1

— It was recently reported that Maria Kanellis would not be appearing on WWE programming while the new season of Celebrity Apprentice airs due to a clause in her contract with NBC prohibiting her from appearing on other television shows during the first run of the reality series. A fan mentioned this to Maria on Twitter with the SmackDown Diva responding, “I am not going anywhere.”

RVD Screwed Over By Movie Studio: Batista Involved

15

Rob Van Dam will be starring in the upcoming straight-to-DVD action movie, “Wrong Side of Town” – or so he thought …

During an interview on the “Between the Ropes” radio show, Van Dam accused the studio Lionsgate of taking him off top billing in favor of his co-star, WWE superstar Batista. Van Dam was under the impression that it was his movie, he’d be the star and Batista was a supporting character. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw that Batista was featured front and center on the DVD box.

“I thought it was my movie. The movie was written for me, I was there for three weeks, filmed every day except for one day, they came out with the DVD box cover and, oh my God, I didn’t realize Batista is the star of it!,” RVD said sarcastically.

RVD was told this action movie was his vehicle to transition into being an action star, but now he doesn’t even know how the movie will turn out after it’s edited and reworked.

“I was completely confused. They said this was like a vehicle for me to go into these other action movies and, yeah, Batista is the star. He was there for two days. I feel like Lionsgate pulled the carpet out from underneath my feet when I was looking. Hopefully when you watch it, I’m still starring in it.”

Former WWE superstar Viscera also appears in the movie.

The “Wrong Side of Town” straight-to-DVD action movie will be released on February 23.

Here are some pictures from the set of “Wrong Side of Town”:

Here’s the DVD cover, starring Dave Batista instead of RVD:

Taz & Tommy Dreamer Comment On The End Of ECW

0

Last night on ECW, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon announced that the ECW brand is being put to rest once and for all this month. WWE will be introducing a new brand, dubbed WWE NXT, which will feature the “next generation” of WWE superstars.

ECW originals Taz and Tommy Dreamer have posted messages on Twitter about McMahon’s announcement and neither sounds happy with how it was handled.

Tommy Dreamer was vague with his comments, but expressed general frustration:

“Many people have asked me why I left WWE. If you watched ECW tonight, a piece of the puzzle was revealed for my actions. Stay tuned.”

Taz on the other hand criticized Vince McMahon for not giving credit to the people who actually made ECW the force it once was. He wrote:

“So, WWE ending their ‘vision’ of ECW (thank god). ANY ORIG ECW wrestlers get a thanks? How about Paul Heyman did he get a thanks? Classy move!”

ECW Shutting Down, WWE NXT (Next Generation) To Debut

15

It’s official – the ECW brand is shutting down for good in 3 weeks. The final ECW broadcast will air on Tuesday, 2/23.

Vince McMahon appeared on this week’s ECW on SyFy broadcast to make the announcement, thanking the superstars and crew who made ECW the success it once was.

McMahon promised a “new, innovative, never before seen program broadcast” that will debut on 3/2 and take over the old ECW timeslot.

There are reports that the new brand will be dubbed WWE Next Generation (“NXT”) and will feature almost exclusively young talent from WWE’s developmental system.

More on the end of ECW and the start of WWE NXT later this week.

WrestleMania 26 Rumored Card: New Matches Added

13

This week on RAW, we may have seen the groundwork laid for one of the top matches at WrestleMania XXVI. It’s been assumed for months that Bret Hart’s return to WWE would culminate at WrestleMania in some sort of match with Vince McMahon. Bret’s physical abilities are not what they once were due to a series of concussions and a stroke several years ago, so his physical involvement would be limited and a Street Fight match was discussed.

On RAW, Bret Hart confronted Vince McMahon and was ready to extract revenge before he was attached by none other than Batista. McMahon ordered Batista to restraint Hart and then got his own revenge on Bret Hart for something he did at Survivor Series 1997 by spitting in the Hit Man’s face. The crowd in Nashville went wild, chanting for John Cena as the show went off the air. (What Happened After RAW) The angle was red hot and unfolded with a level of excitement rarely seen on WWE television these days.

With that match looking likely, here’s an updated list of WrestleMania matches we’ve heard talked about among WWE employees:

Bret Hart and John Cena vs. Vince McMahon and Batista

Edge vs. Chris Jericho

Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker

Triple H vs. Sheamus

Randy Orton vs. Ted DiBiase vs. Cody Rhodes

CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio (Hair vs. Mask)

Jericho Rips on TMZ.com, The Rock's Movie Career Criticized

0

— WWE star Chris Jericho is getting tired of TMZ.com’s ongoing coverage of his and Gregory Helms’ arrest last Wednesday for public intoxication. Earlier today, TMZ posted an update, noting that Greg Helms was in possession of a Soma pill (a muscle relaxer and a schedule four narcotic) at the time of his arrest and was unable to produce a prescription for it at the time.

Jericho posted a message on Twitter in response to TMZ’s latest coverage: “This just in TMZ charged with beating a dead horse and grasping at straws.” To read more tweets from Jericho, visit PWTweets.com.

— Movie website Cinematical.com features a fan rant questioning the success of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s movie career. The article flashes back to Johnson’s 2003 action movie “The Rundown,” which featured a cameo from Arnold Schwarzenegger, who told Johnson to “Have fun” in a symbolic passing of the “action hero” torch. Since then, Johnson has only done two other action movies (Walking Tall and Doom) and has settled into a career of comedies and kids movies.

The author questions whether the era of action movie stars is over and suggests that The Rock’s upcoming return to WWE is a result of his movie career not taking off as he had hoped.

Helms Was Carrying Narcotic Muscle Relaxer At Time Of Arrest

3
Gregory Helms
Gregory Helms

TMZ.com has provided some new details on the January 27 arrests of WWE superstars Chris Jericho and Gregory Helms. According to the police report, Gregory “Hurricane” Helms was in possession of “one white round pill” at the time of his arrest for public intoxication. Police determined the white pill was the muscle relaxer Soma, the generic version of the muscle relaxer Carisoprodol and a “schedule four narcotic.”

Helms told police he had a prescription for the pill but was not able to produce any proof of it at the time of his arrest. Cops did not press charges against Helms over the single Soma pill. Should Helms be unable to produce a prescription for the narcotic found on him at the time of his arrest, he would be in violation of WWE’s Wellness policy and more importantly, the laws of the state of Kentucky, where he was arrested.

It’s worth noting that Gregory Helms was pulled from the Royal Rumble on Sunday after being advertised for the show.

TMZ reached out to WWE about these new details but did not hear back. The wrestling industry is all too familiar with muscle relaxers such as Soma. Dr. Phil Astin was recently jailed for 10 years after he was busted for prescribing Soma (among other drugs) in large quantities to Chris Benoit before he died.

Bischoff Talks About Working With Russo, Monday Nights

2

– With the recent additions of Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan to TNA Wrestling, many have wondered how they would interact with Vince Russo, whom they had trouble working with in WCW. Eric Bischoff has posted a few messages on Twitter this week about Russo specifically:

On Monday, Bischoff wrote:
“Vince Russo has a new book out….I am going to be VERY interested in what he has to say in his book. Hmmm”

This morning, he wrote:
“Sorry to disappoint all of you who are expecting heat between Russo and I. Actually enjoy working with him so far. Ed [Ferrara] and Matt [Conway] too.”

As always, visit PWTweets.com to follow 80+ wrestlers & divas on Twitter!

– The decision has been made within TNA that iMPACT will be going to Mondays full-time but it’s not known yet when those changes will take effect and it’s unknown if the show will air from 8-10pm or 9-11pm. The current plan has TNA taping the show every other week doing a live shot on Monday and taping on Tuesday with the taped show airing the next Monday. Because of the occasional odd number of weeks between pay-per-views, it’s possible there will be times there TNA will tape three shows or do a taping where they would fly people in just for one live Monday. (Source: f4wonline.com)

TNA may make the decision to go live every Monday night depending on how low the ratings for taped shows are. iMPACT going to Monday nights has actually been discussed between Hogan, Bischoff, TNA officials and Spike since October of 2009.

Samoa Joe Talks About Dead Weight On The TNA Roster

6

TNA star Samoa Joe was interviewed by TNA’s official website and talked about “dead weight “on the TNA roster. Joe also defended the infamous shoot promo he cut at Turning Point 2007, when he verbally blasted Scott Hall in the middle of the ring for no-showing the event. Joe told TNA interviewer Hermie Sadler:

“It was a statement that needed to be made. This is a company that can’t have a lot of dead weight attached to it. You either come here to work or fight or get down or you don’t come here at all. For the people that I was speaking about, I made it known I wasn’t here to play games and just be a TV star. I’m here for this company to be the very best and for me to be the very best.”

Joe’s admits that his comments were harsh, but he stands by everything he said and said them because he cares about the company’s survival.

“If anything that I said out there you didn’t find to be true, then maybe you don’t need to be here because everything I said out there I still stand by. I apologized for the tone to some people because they may have taken offense, but at the same time, in their heart of hearts, they knew everything I said out there was absolutely true.”

Details On Santino's New Online Sitcom Show

0

WWE star Santino Marella says he will be starring in a new sitcom on WWE.com featuring Beth Phoenix as his live-in girlfriend and Kozlov playing his best friend.

In an interview with IGN.com, Santino explained that if the show is successful, he intends to spend more time focusing on acting than wrestling.

“I was always the class clown, the comedian. And combine that with 20 years of grappling and you put that together and you get Santino. I think the transition will be easy. I’d say I’m more of an actor actually than a wrestler. I did a pilot already. When I presented it to the office, I did a pilot and it was really fun to do. It’s a really natural transition for me.”

Shooting begins this month at his home in Tampa, FL with hopes of shopping the show around to television networks after the first “online” season.

What Happened After RAW Went Off The Air (Live Report)

2

Thanks to reader James Beckwith for sending in this live report from last night’s WWE RAW from Nashville. If you attend a live WWE show, send in your live reports to [email protected].

– Raw was a virtual sellout including the upper decks. The only area tarped off was near the hard camera and that is normal for television tapings.

– I don’t know how it came across on TV, but the crowd was hot and had high energy for most of the night. John Cena was way over with this crowd. I’m talking close to Austin/Rock levels. They popped every time his image was on the Titantron and for every time he came out in the arena.

– The crowd chanted huge for Cena during the Batista beat down of Bret Hart. I believe that Cena came running out after Raw went off the air. Batista and McMahon bailed and returned to the back immediately. Eventually, Bret got to his feet and made his way to the back as well. Then, the locally advertised main event took place. It was John Cena vs. Sheamus for the WWE title.

– Dark Match main event: John Cena beat WWE champion Sheamus via DQ, Sheamus retained the WWE Title. I expected an extremely short match or a Dusty Finish, but Sheamus and Cena put on a good 10-15 minute match. It ended when Cena had Sheamus in the STF and Batista ran in and broke the hold causing the DQ. Batista then went on an extended beat down of Cena with Sheamus incapacitated on the outside.

Batista beat Cena with the ringside steps and then put the steps in the ring. He set up the Batista Bomb on the steps in the ring (which I expected Cena to power out of since they weren’t on television) and he powerbombed Cena onto the steps in a wicked looking spot. No comeback for Cena against Batista. Finally, Sheamus came back in the ring and stood over Cena while holding up the WWE Title. When he stepped away, Cena popped to his feet and gave Sheamus the Attitude Adjustment to send the crowd home happy.

Lots of Cena’s new shirt in the crowd and tons of glowsticks. WWE is making a fortune off those glowsticks.

Original Plans For The Rumble Ending, Vince Talks WM27

6

(Partial source: F4wonline.com)

– At Monday’s WrestleMania 27 press conference , Vince McMahon talked about how the city of Atlanta has a rich history of pro wrestling but never took a jabs at Ted Turner or WCW. Vince later appeared on a local radio station and was asked by the host if it gave him satisfaction coming to Atlanta because of his rivalry with Turner. Vince said that it hadn’t even crossed his mind. (Of course not, ’cause Vince isn’t the kind of guy to hold a grudge!)

– The original ending for the 30-man Royal Rumble match was for Edge to eliminate Chris Jericho for the win. WWE wound up using Cena as the final elimination instead of Jericho.

– The decision to add MVP vs. The Miz United States title match to the Royal Rumble PPV was made on Sunday afternoon.

– This year’s Royal Rumble match was the third shortest Rumble match ever (just 49 minutes long.) The 1988 and 1995 Rumbles are the other two shortest.

Tag Title Match On RAW Next Week, Edge On SmackDown

5

– The WWE Unified Tag Team Titles will be on the line at next week’s RAW as DX will defend in a Triple Threat against the teams of CM Punk & Luke Gallows and Big Show & The Miz.

– Next week’s Raw will be hosted by NASCAR driver Carl Edwards.

– 2010 Royal Rumble winner Edge will host “The Cutting Edge” show on Friday’s SmackDown with special guest The Undertaker.

– Former WWE Diva Stacy Keibler will be appearing on USA Network’s Psych this coming Wednesday night.

– The 2010 Royal Rumble had some stiff television competition on Sunday night. The NFL Pro Bowl, which went head-to-head with the Rumble, drew 12.3 million viewers and did an 8.2 rating. It was the highest rated Pro Bowl game in 10 years and the males 18-34 demographic was up a sharp 72% from last year. (Source: f4wonline.com)

– Chris Jericho’s Chasing the Grail album peaked at No. 1 on the UK Amazon.com sales charts last week.
