Jim Ross made it back to an Oklahoma Sooners game, and he says two broken toes are the only thing standing between him and the rest of his recovery.
Ross was at Oklahoma’s home opener against UTEP, his first game in some time after health problems kept him away. He called it a dream come true on this week’s Grilling JR, then explained where the recovery has stalled.
I sit here at home and tell myself that I’m a lot better, and I am a lot better. If my two toes in my left foot weren’t broken, my balance wouldn’t be as adversely affected as it is right now. I still got to be careful when I walk to not fall. Falling is JR’s enemy.
The toes came from a fall at home on the morning of his August 12 brain surgery, a shunt procedure in Norman that went well. They are the reason he cannot do the walking side of his physical therapy.
My life is getting more structured under the new circumstances of my health. And if my —- toes weren’t broken, I’d be way down the road. I can’t do as much physical therapy as far as walking or moving on my feet because of my broken toes. So, damned if you do, damned if you don’t. When they’re healed, and they’re healing slowly, I’ll be right back in the saddle. No doubt about it.
Ross, 74, said he is down around 50 pounds from his heaviest. He got as low as 185 or 186 and is back up to 208.
Home health nurses come in twice a week. One of the things they check is a wound on his left ankle left over from radiation for skin cancer years ago, which never fully closed. That treatment worked.
The toes matter to more than the therapy. Ross said last week that he is targeting All Out on September 26 for his return to the AEW commentary desk, with Chicago a two-hour nonstop flight from Oklahoma City. He has said the question from AEW is not whether he can call a match but whether he is steady enough on his feet to travel.
Ross has been with AEW since it launched in 2019 and works commentary on selected pay-per-view matches. Doctors advised him against flying to All In at Wembley last month, the first he has missed.
