Sami Zayn Feared His WWE Title Window Had Closed

ByMike ReichlinProfessional Wrestling Journalist

Sami Zayn says losing to Drew McIntyre at the 2026 Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia was the moment he genuinely believed his WWE Championship window had slammed shut. The current Undisputed WWE Champion opened up about the mental toll of his title chase, admitting the pursuit nearly broke him before he finally got the job done at Night of Champions.

Speaking on Raw Recap (YouTube), Zayn said the Rumble defeat hit harder than any other near-miss across his years-long climb.

“The one that really did my head in a little bit was coming up short against Drew this past January at the Royal Rumble. Because after that one, that’s when I was already starting to feel… I felt like maybe I’d missed my window,” Zayn said.

That fear only deepened as he watched a new generation surge past him. Zayn said he knew he belonged with names like Drew McIntyre, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, and Seth Rollins, but the momentum behind younger stars made him wonder if the company had already moved on.

“And I was starting to see the sea change with Trick, and the fans getting behind Trick, and they kind of moved on from my story. And they were into Oba and Je’Von and Bron Breakker. There was this idea that, ‘Oh my god, their window is opening and I think mine might have closed,'” Zayn said.

He had previously detailed how that loss left him losing faith in his WWE title chances after the Royal Rumble.

“I Felt Like I Can Just Breathe”

Zayn captured the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions 2026, beating Cody Rhodes and Gunther in a triple threat match. He said the dominant emotion now is relief.

“I think anyone who’s paid attention has seen that I kinda drove myself to the edge of sanity a little bit there for a while just by putting so much pressure on myself to win this thing. And it’s here, and I feel like I can just breathe. It feels great,” Zayn said.

He added that he is still processing the win. “It feels like the weight of the world’s off my shoulders,” he said.

Just as much as the result, Zayn took pride in how he won it. He pointed to the clean finish as validation of a promise he made a decade ago.

“I didn’t cheat, I didn’t knock out a referee, there was nothing nefarious about it. I rolled him up with a wrestling hold and I won. Middle of the ring. Just like I said 10 years ago, ‘I’m gonna win this the right way,’ and I did. So I’m immensely proud of myself for that,” Zayn said.
