Triple H says WWE has stopped trying to convince anyone that wrestling is real. He thinks the business earned the right to drop the act.
The WWE Chief Content Officer made the comments on Busted Open, the anchor show of WWE Radio, the company’s new SiriusXM channel.
There was a moment in time where our predecessors fought, literally fought tooth and nail, in bars, and clubs, and on the street, to prove to people that this was real, because they thought that that was the badge of legitimacy of what we did.
The badge, he argued, is now the work itself.
Over time, the badge of legitimacy of what we do, is just what we do. Right? It’s so difficult. It’s so physically demanding. It’s so all-encompassing.
Tying It To WWE Unreal
Levesque linked the point to WWE Unreal, the Netflix series that puts cameras on WWE’s creative process, arguing fans already understand what happens off screen.
It’s a funny thing now, though, because of the business, because the paradigm has shifted to some degree. Everybody kind of knows what it is. We’ve opened that wide open with WWE Unreal.
Several veterans have criticized WWE for lifting the curtain, and Levesque has heard that argument before.
WWE Radio launched July 27 on SiriusXM channel 156, taking over the slot long held by Pro Wrestling Nation 24/7. Busted Open continues as the flagship, hosted by Dave LaGreca alongside Bully Ray, Mark Henry and Nic Nemeth.
