Will Chelsea Green not be the interim champion anymore?
WWE surprised everyone when they announced the crowning of an interim Women’s Champion in the absence of Rhea Ripley. This was a deviation from the company’s usual solution of just stripping the champion of their title in the event of an injury.
Chelsea Green went on to win the interim title in the ladder match at SummerSlam Night 2. Rhea Ripley, on the other hand, announced this week that she had finally opted to get surgery for her knee injury.
Chelsea Green To Be Full Time Champion?
Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer provided an interesting update on the matter recently after Ripley’s announcement. He noted that there have been ‘rumblings’ that The Mami could end up vacating her title after all, with Green becoming the official champion.
This change would make sense considering that Rhea Ripley had been out of action since early June but she only underwent surgery this week. Her post indicates that other options had been explored before the decision was made for the women’s champion to undergo the procedure.
A surgery means her recovery time will be much longer than officials may have initially hoped. Chelsea Green herself has said that she considers herself to be a permanent champion and such a decision would be in line with her statement.
The report indicates that we will get a better idea about the whole thing on this Friday’s SmackDown. The show will also feature a big women’s match, among other things. You can check out the preview for the episode here.
