AJ Styles’ Awesome Water Bottle Spot With Sami Zayn On SDL (Video)

18

As we’ve noted, the dark main event of last night’s SmackDown Live and 205 Live tapings was a Six-Man Tag Team match between the teams of Bobby Roode, AJ Styles, and Shinsuke Nakamura against Jinder Mahal, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. During the match Zayn tried to haul a water bottle and AJ Styles at ringside, however, “The Phenomenal One” caught it and fired it right back at him:

After the match Bobby Roode got the water bottle and dumped it on Zayn as he scrambled away and out of the ring:

Daniel Bryan Sets Timeline For His Future In WWE

11

SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan recently spoke with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated while at a Springfield Thunderbirds hockey game over the weekend. During the discussion, he revealed a timeline for his future with the sports entertainment company.

“I assume that if I don’t wrestle by WrestleMania, I probably won’t be wrestling with WWE at all,” said Bryan. “That’s my assumption.”

Bryan has made it very clear to the WWE and to fans that despite what the company’s doctors have said to him in the past, he wants to step back in the ring again and is confident he hasn’t wrestled his last match.

Bryan continued, “It’s not a black and white answer. There are a lot of issues with me getting cleared by WWE. They have a very strict protocol, which is a good thing, but the timeline of all that happening was not the best for me. It’s an interesting situation that will develop.”

While his WWE contract is up in September, overtures have already been made in hopes of luring Bryan back to action. ROH COO Joe Koff has stated on multiple occasions that Ring of Honor would roll out the red carpet for him and welcome back “Bryan Danielson” with open arms.

When Cody Rhodes and the Young Bucks announced their plans to promote an “All In” independent show later this year with 10,000 fans in attendance, Cody made it clear he’d like to face Daniel Bryan in the main event.

Whatever the future holds for Daniel Bryan, we’ll find out where things stand in a matter of months.

Chris Jericho Names His 5 Favorite Opponents

14

Ahead of his big match against Kenny Omega at Wrestle Kingdom 12 on January 4th, Chris Jericho penned an article for The Players Tribune website about his five favorite opponents over the course of his career.

Ultimo Dragon, Dean Malenko, Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio and Kevin Owens – you just made the list! Some quick notes on what Jericho said about each man:

  • Ultimo Dragon

After competing in Mexico’s CMLL promotion and later WAR in Japan, “We wrestled at the WAR third anniversary show in July of 1995, and that was the match that got me into ECW and into WCW.”

  • Dean Malenko

Malenko was one of Jericho’s favorite opponents in WCW and their rivalry produced some of the most memorable aspects of Jericho’s early career on the national stage.

“The run with Dean ultimately led to some of the lasting fan-favorite Jericho promos, including “Man of 1,004 holds,” “Conspiracy Victim” and several others.”

  • Shawn Michaels

“A hundred years from now, Shawn will probably still be talked about as one of the greatest performers in the history of wrestling. Being able to work with him in such a big way in 2008 is something I will always be proud of.”

  • Rey Mysterio

“On the surface, it probably wouldn’t seem as though our styles would mesh, but that’s just another component that made working with Rey so great. We both were constantly changing it up in the ring, and I think we both did some of our best wrestling during that four-month span.”

  • Kevin Owens

Jericho and Kevin Owens’ “Best Friends” angle was one of the highlights of WWE programming in 2017. With their bromance in full swing and Jericho feeling untouchable, everything came crashing down at the Festival of Friendship.

“When he finally turned on me, the moment had a great element of surprise — and more importantly, we had people watching who were emotionally invested. A lot of hearts were broken that night — but in a good way. There aren’t a whole lot of guys besides Kevin who would have been able to convincingly pull that off.”

Head over to The Players Tribune to read Jericho’s thoughts on each opponent and how their matches shaped the course of his career.

Jim Ross Confirms He & Jerry Lawler Are Booked For RAW 25

5

WWE’s 25th Anniversary special for Monday Night Raw is fast approaching and several legends will be appearing on the show(s) to mark the occasion. Whoever shows up, it wouldn’t be a true Raw reunion without the two most recognizable voices in the show’s historic run, WWE Hall of Famers Jim Ross and Jerry “The King” Lawler.

Both men have been teasing involvement in recent weeks, but JR has since confirmed that he and the King will be on hand – at least for the catering.

WWE is already advertising Brock Lesnar and John Cena for the show, with many more legends rumored to be appearing.

‘RAW 25’ takes place on Monday, January 22nd from both the Manhattan Center and the Brooklyn’s Barclay Center in New York City.

Rusev & Wendys Restaurant Discuss Rusev Day Celebrations

20

Rusev and the popular fast-food chain, Wendys, have been having a bit of a back and forth on social media recently.

The Rusev/Wendys interaction started not long after the restaurant announced plans for January 4th to be “National Roast Day”.

A fan responded to the post by simply wishing them a “Happy Rusev Day”.

Upon finding out about this, Rusev made a special request of Wendys:

Apparently, Rusev is a former Wendys employee.

Rusev Day

The belief is Rusev Day t-shirts are selling well as WWEShop initially ran out of stock not long after announcing the shirt’s release.

Having debuted at the Royal Rumble in 2014, Rusev has been on the main roster for 4 years now and could be in-line for a considerable push given his recent popularity.

Happy Rusev Day!

5 Takeaways From WWE SmackDown (1/2)

2

The January 2nd episode of WWE SmackDown aired live from the Amway Center in Orlando, FL. Here are 5 takeaways from this week’s show:

AJ Styles Shared His New Year’s Resolutions

shane daniel aj smackdown 1 2 18

WWE Champion AJ Styles came down to the ring and announced his New Year’s resolutions. Styles stated that he wanted to hold the WWE Championship until WrestleMania and then leave WrestleMania 34 with the title. AJ added that another one of his resolutions was to defeat Sami Zayn tonight.

SmackDown GM Daniel Bryan came down to the ring and joined Styles. Shane McMahon’s music then hit and the SmackDown Commissioner also joined Bryan and Styles in the ring. The crowd then chanted “Shane McMahon!” and “Daniel Bryan!”. Shane stated that he had the best intentions last week when he came down to the ring to remove Sami Zayn. Shane apologized for contributing to AJ’s loss last week to Kevin Owens. AJ accepted the apology.

Shane admitted to having issues with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. Shane claimed that Daniel Bryan seems to favor Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens for allowing Zayn to be ringside last week on SmackDown. Shane asked Daniel if he was turning the yes movement into the yep movement. Shane added that if Owens going to be ringside for the match, he will be there as well.

Daniel stated that both Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon will be ringside for the main event. Bryan said that if they are both going to be ringside, then he will join them as well. Shane McMahon added that they are going to start the new year off with a bang and Daniel Bryan started a “yes!” chant to end the segment.

Last week on SmackDown, Shane McMahon inadvertently cost AJ Styles his match against Kevin Owens. I’m guessing something similar will happen in tonight’s main event.

The Usos Retained Their Titles

The Usos retain smackdown 1 2 18

The Usos defended their SmackDown Tag Team Championships against Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin. Gable and Benjamin controlled the match early. Gable connected with a Moonsault off the top rope and tried to cover Jimmy but Jey broke it up as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

When SmackDown returned, Jimmy hit Gable with a Dropkick and tagged in Jey Uso. Jey knocked Benjamin out of the ring and leaped on top of him. Jey then knocked Gable out of the ring and leaped on to him as well. Benjamin dragged Jey out of the ring and slammed him into the barricade. Benjamin kneed Jey in the face and then teamed up with Gable to slam Jimmy to the mat for the pinfall victory.

Another referee ran down to the ring and said that Jey Uso was the legal man in the match and Jimmy Uso was the one who was pinned. The other referee admitted that he made a mistake and that Gable and Benjamin were not the legal men in the match. The match was then restarted.

Gable took out Jimmy Uso outside the ring. Back in the ring, Benjamin connected with a Spinebuster to Jey Uso. Gable and Benjamin attempted their finisher once again but The Usos were ready for it. The Usos Superkicked both Gable and Benjamin and hit a Splash on Shelton Benjamin for the victory.

This was goofy. The Usos, Gable & Benjamin are perfectly capable of having a great tag match. I would have preferred to have seen that rather than referees conversing and everyone standing around while they figure out if they screwed things up.

Xavier Woods Advanced In The US Title Tournament

woods us title

New Day was backstage before Aiden English and Rusev interrupted. English said that he wished every day was Rusev Day. English vowed to defeat Woods tonight and advance in the United States Championship tournament.

Rusev accompanied English to the ring and sang him a song in the ring. Big E and Kofi Kingston accompanied Woods to the ring. Woods controlled the match early and threw English out of the ring. Woods connected with a kick and then was distracted by Rusev. English slammed Woods’ face off the steel steps and brought him back into the ring.

Jinder Mahal and the Singh Brothers were shown backstage watching the match as English applied a Chin Lock in the middle of the ring. Woods broke free and booted English in the face. Woods followed it up with a Backbreaker for a two count. English planted Woods with a Powerbomb and went for the cover but Woods kicked out at two. Woods dropped English off the second rope and then hit an Elbow Drop for the pinfall victory. After the match, New Day celebrated with pancakes and threw a couple of them at Byron Saxton and Corey Graves.

Woods and English had a solid match tonight. Xavier will have a much tougher challenge when he faces Jinder Mahal in the next round.

Charlotte Told Everyone To Believe In Their Dreams

charlotte clash of champions

Natalya, Carmella, Lana and Tamina were interviewed backstage. Natalya stated that before the Riott Squad arrived there was the Welcoming Committee. Natalya added that while imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, there really is nothing better than the real thing.

Natalya, Carmella, Lana and Tamina then battled the Riott Squad on SmackDown. Liv Morgan and Natalya started off the match. Natalya connected with a Clothesline for. a two count and then went for the Sharpshooter but Morgan escaped out of the ring as SmackDown went to a commercial break.

When SmackDown returned, Sarah Logan had Carmella in a Chin Lock in the middle of the ring. Carmella broke free with a Jawbreaker and tagged Tamina in. Tamina leveled Logan with a Clothesline and then booted Ruby Riott in the face. Tamina planted Logan with a Samoan Drop and climbed to the top rope. Liv Morgan shoved Tamina off the turnbuckle and Sarah Logan kneed Tamina in the back of the head for the pinfall victory.

After the match, Ruby Riott grabbed a microphone. Ruby said that magic isn’t real just like the people in the crowd. Riott called everyone in the crowd a phony and said that deep down they were all miserable. Ruby stated that the Riott Squad and their success is real. Ruby then announced that the Riott Squad are entering the women’s Royal Rumble match.

SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte interrupted and came down to the entrance ramp. Charlotte stated that magic is real and that if you find something you are passionate about it can change your life.  Charlotte said that actions have consequences and Naomi and Becky Lynch joined her on the entrance ramp. Charlotte, Becky and Naomi rushed the ring and beatdown the Riott Squad.

I’m used to listening to terrible promos on RAW and SmackDown every week, but this promo was just remarkably bad. Charlotte says everything in one tone and is obviously much better as a heel when it comes to promos. It was as if a robot was telling me to believe in my dreams. Ruby Riott can do a promo, but not when the material is this horrible.

Daniel Bryan Announced The WWE Championship Match For Royal Rumble

shane daniel aj zayn smackdown 1 2 18

Sami Zayn faced AJ Styles in the main event. Kevin Owens, Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon were all ringside for the match. AJ controlled the match early and connected with a Dropkick that knocked Sami out of the ring. Owens and Shane started arguing and Daniel Bryan got in between them.

Back in the ring, Zayn connected with a kick and followed it up with a Suplex as SmackDown went to a commercial break. When SmackDown returned, AJ planted Zayn with a Gutbuster for a two count. AJ followed it up with a Neckbreaker and went for the cover but Sami once again kicked out.

Sami battled back and connected with the Blue Thunder Bomb for a two count. Zayn went for the Helluva Kick but AJ reversed it into the Calf Crusher in the middle of the ring. Zayn fought through the pain and reached the bottom rope to break the hold. AJ connected with the Pele Kick and went for the Phenomenal Forearm but Sami got out of the way.

The referee was knocked out of the ring as Styles rolled Zayn up. Owens got in the refs way and prevented the pinfall from taking place. Shane McMahon shoved Owens to the ground and demanded that the referee kick him out. Daniel Bryan then grabbed a microphone and said that if Owens is kicked out, Shane should be kicked out as well.

Owens jumped onto the ring apron and Styles quickly knocked him back down. Zayn then hit the Helluva Kick on the distracted Styles for the pinfall victory. After the match, AJ Styles grabbed a mic and stated that he is tired of Shane and Daniel bickering like children. AJ sarcastically said that he doesn’t care if he had to face Owens and Zayn in a Handicap match. Daniel Bryan then announced that AJ Styles will defend his WWE Championship against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in a Handicap match at Royal Rumble.

Shane McMahon, Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens all arguing outside the ring during the match was annoying. It is hard to complain about a match with Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and AJ Styles. However, I’m guessing that there are going to be 14 things going on besides the action in the ring at Royal Rumble and that will take away from the match. The storyline is interesting, but I didn’t enjoy the match at Clash of Champions where Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon kept getting involved. I’m expecting something similar at Royal Rumble now.

Daniel Bryan Comments on Possibly Wrestling at WrestleMania 34

2

Daniel Bryan recently spoke to media while attending a Springfield Thunderbird game on Friday night. In addition to performing the ceremonial puck drop before the game, Bryan commented on potentially returning to in-ring competition.

“I assume that if I don’t wrestle by WrestleMania, I probably won’t be wrestling with WWE at all,” said Bryan. “That’s my assumption.

“It’s not a black and white answer,” Bryan continued. “There are a lot of issues with me getting cleared by WWE. They have a very strict protocol, which is a good thing, but the timeline of all that happening was not the best for me. It’s an interesting situation that will develop.”

– Former WWE World Champion Rey Mysterio is set to face reality TV star Adam Maxted at a 5 Star Wrestling show on March 1, 2018 in Belfast, Northern Ireland from the SSE Arena. Maxted appeared on the British reality dating show Love Island. He recently noted in an interview with The Belfast Telegraph that he didn’t have sex on the show because he one day wants to make it in WWE, and had a tryout with the company this past May in the United Kingdom:

“I said to myself that there was no way I was going to risk my future and my dream – no matter how good looking the girl was or how much there was a connection or how much I wanted to do it,” Maxted said. “My dream is to be in the WWE and it’s such a child-based market so I wasn’t ever going to ruin my chances of getting onto that because I’d had sex on TV.”

AJ Styles Already Makes WWE History In 2018

6

AJ Styles was already a huge name in professional wrestling before coming to WWE, and his year with the company in 2017 was nothing less that stellar. “The Phenomenal One” became the first person in WWE history to win the WWE Championship outside of North America when he defeated Jinder Mahal at a SmackDown Live taping in Manchester, England during WWE’s European Tour.

After making history in 2017, Styles has already made history in 2018 just two days into the new year. Styles joins Superstars such as Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, John Cena and, CM Punk who have started and ended a calendar year while holding the WWE Championship. He won the strap back in 2016 from Dean Ambrose at the Backlash pay-per-view (PPV) before going on to lose it to John Cena in January of 2017 at the Royal Rumble.

He then beat Mahal on SmackDown Live back in November and retained the title into the new year. Now we await to see how WWE uses Styles heading into WrestleMania 34 and who will challenge “The Phenomenal One” at “The Show Of Shows” for the WWE Title.

On last night’s episode of Monday Night RAW Bullet Club alumni Finn Balor, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows reunited inside the ring to take on the team of The Miztourage (Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas) and Elias. The Club emerged victorious, however, somebody in WWE’s social media department referenced the trio as “The Bullet Club” on WWE’s UK Facebook page – which Balor, Gallows, and Anderson were a part of during their time in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW).

The Young Bucks responded to this on Twitter by referencing the cease and desist letter WWE issued out to them a few months again (NOTE: The WWE’s post has since been removed so below is a screenshot of the post):

Bayley will compete in the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match later this month.

Meanwhile, New Day member Big E has a different take on how to change your life in the new year.

The “WWE Future Endeavors: Class of 2017” video can be seen below. Notable WWE releases in 2017 include Emma, Jack Swagger, Austin Aries, Eva Marie and James Ellsworth.

Shane McMahon Reportedly Penciled In For Another ‘High Profile WrestleMania Match’

8

The trio of Shane McMahon, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn have all been feuding for the past several months, and it’s expected that rivalry will come to an end at WrestleMania 34 this April in New Orleans.

Per a report from WrestleVotes on Twitter, who broke the news about Neville walking out on WWE, Shane McMahon is penciled in for another ‘high profile WrestleMania match.’ In recent years McMahon has shared the WrestleMania ring with the likes of The Undertaker and AJ Styles (both losing efforts), but seemingly stole the show in both of those matches. The exact details of McMahon’s match at WrestleMania 34 is not yet known, however, it’s speculated a Tag Team match of sorts against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn is possible.

Daniel Bryan is still not cleared by WWE to compete (and likely never will be), and his relationship with Shane on WWE TV has been rocky, so who would McMahon’s partner be? We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available….
