WWE “Seat Filler” Recaps His Experience, RAW Backstage Fallout Video

5

– Craig Hlavaty of the Houston Press has written an article about his experience as a “seat filler” at last week’s 20th Anniversary RAW. When WWE holds a RAW or SmackDown taping and there are empty seats on the “hard camera” side, arena officials will move fans around so the empty seats to not appear on television. Here’s an excerpt of what Hlavaty said about the experience:

“After waiting about an hour, we were briefed by a staffer named Steve, whose role it is with the show to make sure seats don’t look empty for the folks at home.”

“I did get some sweet seat fillin’ action during the Divas match, where Kaitlyn and Eve duked it out. Apparently some fans didn’t wanna watch two chicks fight it out and I got to become a red, bald pixel behind two chicks in spandex. Story of my life.”

“Other than a few movements earlier in the evening, I didn’t move much, if at all. Seat fillers get great seats, however transient, and get to see all the action.”

– Here is the latest episode of WWE’s Backstage Fallout, featuring behind-the-scenes interviews from Monday’s RAW:

What does Dr. Shelby think of his anger management graduates, WWE Tag Team Champions, Team Hell No? Watch the Raw edition of “Backstage Fallout” to hear from the good doctor. Plus, get your dose of Divas Champion Kaitlyn.

Antonio Cesaro Talks About Working With Punk & Bryan, Being A Heel

3

WWE United States champion Antonio Cesaro was interviewed by the Phoenix New Times this week to promote Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Here are some highlights of what Cesaro said about:

Working with CM Punk & Daniel Bryan in WWE after being on the indy scene with them just a few years ago:

“I think it’s great and it just proves that if you work hard and if you get better and better and get the best at your craft as you can be [then] you will have success. You know, all those guys — Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, myself, and many others — have put a lot of hard work into what they do and made a lot of sacrifices. [They] still do. It does not come overnight.”

Is it better to be a villain than a hero?

See, I think the lines are very, very blurred because I don’t see myself as the villain. I think it’s America that vilifies me because I say what I say and think and America doesn’t like foreigners. When I go to Europe, or [when] I went to my home country of Switzerland, I was a big hero. And I’m still the same person. So I think its all in the view of the beholder…how do you say?

ESPN.com has updated their WWE Power Rankings for the week. Here are the Top 5, with their rankings from last week in the parentheses:

1. CM Punk (1)
2. Dolph Ziggler (3)
3. The Shield (9)
4. Alberto Del Rio (4)
5. The Rock (2)

It’s worth noting that John Cena ranked at #10 this week after taking the #5 spot last week. ESPN is the latest news outlet to skewer Cena for his odd promo on RAW:

This man used to be money on the mic, but his promo on Raw was seriously one of the most ridiculous, time-wasting experiences I’ve sat through in years. Curious to know whether his writers are really this out of touch, or if Cena actually thinks he’s being funny.

Ric Flair & Rey Mysterio Not At Monday’s RAW, Talk Of Miz Getting YouTube Show

As of last week, Flair was booked for the show, however the only sign of Flair on RAW was during a video package recapping Flair’s appearance on Miz TV last week. It’s possible that WWE kept Flair off the show because The Miz was booked to lose to Dolph Ziggler in a Beat the Clock match, but that’s just speculation on our part.

Flair was also scheduled to work tonight’s WWE SmackDown tapings from Sacramento before heading to Japan to wrestle for All Japan Pro Wrestling later this week, but it remains to be seen if he’ll appear tonight.

Back from the break and Barrett with a big shot to the gut then a suplex for a 2 count. Sheamus comes back with ax handles and a spear in the corner. Sheamus with a high knee and a clothesline in the corner. Barrett ducks one and gets dumped to the apron. Sheamus with forearm shots to the chest now. Sheamus suplexes Barrett in for a 2 count. Barrett turns it around and goes for a gutwrench but Sheamus counters. Barrett ducks the Brogue Kick and kicks Sheamus in the gut. Barrett with a huge back kick to the jaw for a close 2 count. Barrett goes to the second rope and nails an elbow drop for 2. Barrett puts Sheamus on his shoulders but Sheamus fights out and nails White Noise. Sheamus calls for the Brogue Kick but Ziggler, AJ and Langston run down. AJ hops in the ring and distracts Sheamus. Sheamus turns around to Winds of Change from Barrett but he kicks out at 2. Sheamus hits a Brogue Kick but can’t get the pin in before the clock expires. Ziggler celebrates at ringside with Langston and AJ. They head up the ramp as Sheamus looks on angrily from the ring. Ziggler has won the challenge.

– Still to come, Cena will address the fans. Back to commercial.

– Vickie Guerrero is backstage when Ziggler, Langston and AJ walk in bragging. AJ and Ziggler make out in front of Vickie. Ziggler talks about picking his number. Vickie interrupts and says she didn’t say which number he gets to pick. Ziggler has to pick between #1 or #2. Vickie laughs and walks off.

– We see what happened earlier with The Shield beating down The Rock.

– Punk and Heyman are backstage walking when Vince McMahon appears. Vince asks them if they think they are clever. Punk says they had nothing to do with what happened to The Rock. Vince says if The Shield gets involved with Punk’s match at Royal Rumble, then he will have severe consequences. Vince and Punk argue when Heyman tries to calm them down. Heyman says there is no evidence against Punk. Vince says his consequences are that he will strip Punk of the title. Vince walks off and we go to commercial.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Tensai

We go to the ring and out comes Ricardo Rodriguez to begin Alberto Del Rio’s introduction. Out comes the World Heavyweight Champion to a nice reaction. We see Tensai waiting in the ring.

The bell rings and Tensai goes to work on Del Rio. Tensai takes Del Rio to the corner and whips him across the ring. Tensai with a big splash from the second rope. And another for a 2 count. Tensai runs into boots in the corner. Del Rio with a flying head scissors from the corner. Del Rio with a big belly to belly suplex. Del Rio with a kick to the side of the head in the corner. Del Rio hits a moonsault for the easy non-title win.

Winner: Alberto Del Rio

– After the match, Del Rio takes the mic and taunts Big Show for their Last Man Standing Match at Royal Rumble. Del Rio has the crowd count to 10 in Spanish. Ricardo leads them in a “si!” chant as Del Rio hits the corners.

– It’s announced that Bob Backlund will be going into the WWE Hall of Fame this year. The following video package aired looking back at Backlund’s career:

– Back from the break and out comes John Cena to address the WWE Universe about Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

Cena talks for several minutes about Sundays. Cena says it will be all out warfare in the Rumble. Cena promises that he will win the Rumble and goes to celebrate when Sheamus comes out to interrupt. Sheamus says that was a passionate speech but he thinks Cena has it all wrong. Sheamus says he will win it this year like he won last year. Darren Young and Titus O’Neil come out next. They talk when Randy Orton’s music hits and he comes out. Orton didn’t come to dance, he declares that he will win the Rumble. The Miz is out next and he says the same thing, because he’s awesome. Kane’s pyro goes off and he’s out with Daniel Bryan. They argue about who will win before joining everyone else in the ring. Antonio Cesaro is out next. He says everyone is wrong and he will win the Royal Rumble match. Cesaro will dedicate his win to the United States, he says. 3MB is out next and they think they’re going to win. A bunch of other Superstars come out at once and a brawl erupts in the ring. Sheamus and Ryback start tossing people out. RAW goes off the air.

Royal Rumble 2013 Spoilers: Former Superstars Returning

37

WWE is interested in bringing back several former mid-card wrestlers to fill out the roster, help the company’s younger talent get over and improve live event attendance, particularly the SmackDown brand.

Some of the names discussed include John Morrison, Shelton Benjamin, MVP and Low Ki (formerly Kaval in NXT). Shetlon Benjamin recently got out of his Ring of Honor contract and is seen as one of the wrestlers most likely to be returning. MVP recently stated on Twitter that he’s open to returning, but he is currently under contract to New Japan pro wrestling and is very satisfied working overseas.

Aside from these names, other superstars discussed for possible Royal Rumble returns include Tommy Dreamer and the New Age Outlaws. There’s also a possibility we’ll see Christian return at the Rumble, since he’s ready to return to action this month after a several month absence.

Zack Ryder To Perform “Hoeski” Before Royal Rumble, Edge Addresses The Possibility Of Wrestling Again

40

– Zack Ryder will perform “Hoeski” prior to Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view event in Phoenix, Arizona.

“BREAKING NEWS! I will perform #Hoeski LIVE before WWE Royal Rumble outside the US Airways Arena,” Ryder wrote on Twitter Monday.

– Adam “Edge” Copeland reiterated his stance on the possibility of a wrestling return in a Twitter message Monday. The WWE Hall of Famer was asked, “If the doctors ever cleared you, would you return to wrestling?” He responded, “They won’t. Seems half of you refuse to understand that.”

In 2011, Copeland was diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis, and because of such, the doctors cannot medically clear him to compete without him risking neck-down paralysis, or even death.

Copeland was also asked if he would be interested in working for WWE in a behind-the-scenes capacity, responding, “After 20 yrs on the road I prefer home for now.”

MAILBAG: Would You Rather See Austin face Cena or Punk?

SEScoops Mailbag for January 21st

Got a Question? Submit it with your name to: [email protected]

Q: After SmackDown was moved from MyNetwork TV to SyFy in 2010, did WWE tell or threaten MyNetwork TV to not allow any MMA or wrestling programming on their channels? The reason that I am asking is that my local MyNetwork TV affiliate, KCOP Channel 13, doesn’t carry a single drop of wrestling or mixed martial arts programming. – Luis Alejandro from Los Angeles

A: There was no threat made. Once their agreement ended with MyNetwork, they would have had no influence over their programming decisions anyway. If your channel has no wrestling or MMA, that’s their choice.

Q: Do you think WWE would be stupid enough to put Stone Cold against [John] Cena instead of CM Punk? Also, how come WWE hasn’t brought in amateur wrestlers like Brock Lesnar or Kurt Angle lately because they could put on brilliant matches. – Gareth from Ireland

A: Cena is the company’s biggest star right now. He did record-setting business with Rock at Mania last year. Why would they be stupid to want to put the two of them together? I would rather see Austin against Punk if he were to wrestle another match, but they would do big business with either of those matches. As for amateur wrestlers, they just signed former Oregon State wrestler Clayton Jack, who was recruited by Gerald Briscoe. He will report to NXT later this month.

Q: I was watching the John Cena vs. Big Show match from WrestleMania 20 and when Michael Cole was talking about Madison Square Garden, he mentioned Big show retiring Hulk Hogan from the Garden the previous year, that being 2003. I checked Wikipedia and could only find Hogan having a falling out from WWE that year, but does not mention Big Show. Could you please explain what Cole is talking about? – Adrian from Australia

A: At a Smackdown taping from MSG the previous June, Big Show pinned Hogan (under a mask doing his Mr. America gimmick) in a six-man tag match, which turned out to be Hogan’s final appearance at the time. After that, Big Show was billed as the man who retired Hulk Hogan.

Q: With the rumored matches for WrestleMania, I wonder if you think WWE is going in the right direction with the main events? We’ve already seen Rock vs. Cena and Brock vs. Triple H. With Punk vs. Undertaker, we all know who is going to win, so it doesn’t make sense to me to feed one of their hardest working and most dependable guys to someone who only shows up once or twice a year. It seems to make more sense to [go with] Brock vs. Undertaker since they’re both part time performers and can feed off the publicity from their UFC confrontation. – Travis

A: The publicity from Undertaker and Brock’s UFC run-in ran its course long ago. I’d like to see the match, but apparently, WWE worries that Taker’s physical state is such that it would be too much of a risk to put him in the ring with the hard-hitting Lesnar. Punk vs. Taker only makes sense if you make it Streak vs. Title, but I doubt Punk keeps the title through Mania. As for Rock vs. Cena, the match made more money for them than any other in history. Why wouldn’t they want to book a rematch? They do it in boxing all the time.

Q: Was the finish for the main event at Starrcade ’97 supposed to be what we saw on TV or was Sting supposed to kick out at two? – Ricardo

A: Referee Nick Patrick was supposed to fast count Sting, leading to Bret Hart coming down and saying he would not allow such an injustice to occur. Of course, Patrick didn’t fast count Sting and Bret Hart looked like a bully when he punched Patrick in the face.

Q: I just watched Zack Ryder’s [Hoeski] music video. This guy has over a million Twitter followers and if used right, he can get over with fans as proven before. What would you do if you were WWE Creative to revive his career? – Rabbi Lucky

A: After watching the video, I’m not sure I’d want to revive his career.

Jim Ross Weighs In On Tonight’s Raw, CM Punk vs. The Rock Match Strategy, 30-Man Royal Rumble Match

6

Jim Ross has published a new blog on his official website, jrsbarbq.com, where he previews tonight’s Raw and next Sunday’s Royal Rumble.

Tonight’s Raw: “Tonight’s show will likely have two, primary destinations. 1. The WWE Title Bout and 2. The Royal Rumble match itself. What other stories need be told?

“The onus of selling this PPV this Sunday seems to largely weigh on the shoulders of Rock and Punk. I have no issue with that because I still look upon the WWE Title as the centerpiece of the company. All titles are important but within WWE, or at least when I was there full time on the road and in the office, the WWE Title was the bellcow. Still is as I perceive it.”

WWE Champion CM Punk vs. The Rock at the Royal Rumble: “I’m very curious as to how Rock, the challenger for the WWE Title, and WWE Champion Punk interact tonight. I think these two will have a compelling match Sunday in Phoenix that will likely and arguably be more physically demanding than any bout that the Rock has had in WWE in perhaps a decade.

“Punk’s in ring approach and physicality is unique and not a traditional catch as catch can style as many of his peers utilize. I see Punk using a variety of stiff kicks at the Royal Rumble and challenging Rock with a variety of submission holds that one can only assume isn’t something that the “Great One” is comfortable defending. Time will tell.

“I also expect the WWE Title bout to exceed 30 minutes bell to bell and if that assumption is accurate that’s another figurative notch in Punk’s favor. Rock is obviously in great physical condition but nothing prepares one for a big match like competing in the ring several days prior to said big match. I’m guessing Rock has been in the ring preparing but that type of prep pales in comparison to actual performing and competing in a ring surrounded by paying customers. Every top wrestler I’ve ever known says that no amount of cardio training can replace actual in ring work to build up one’s wind and get one ready for a major bout such as headlining the Royal Rumble.”

30-Man Royal Rumble Match: “Without question, John Cena is the focus of the Royal Rumble match which is not to say that several others competing in the bout don’t have the opportunity to maximize their minutes and forward issues in which they are involved or to start new ones.

“The winner of the Rumble match theoretically has his ticket punched for a main event slot at WrestleMania. I can more easily emotionally invest in a multi person bout such as the Rumble match if something significant is at stake and it certainly is in this WWE HOFer Pat Patterson creation.”

Countdown to WrestleMania 29: “There is no more important stretch of time than now until April 7 for anyone who earns a living in WWE. The Road to WM29 is crucial on so many platforms and the momentum built from it goes far beyond April 7. For a pure, sports fan it’s akin to a long playoff run. Win or go home and if one does ‘win’ the ultimate prize is indefinable.”

Ross also discusses WWE’s upcoming tryout camp, Brian Pillman, the NFL Playoffs, mixed martials arts, and more. His entry is available here.

Honky Tonk Man Talks About His Historic, IC Title Run, His Gimmick, Beef With Other Wrestlers

6

Kayfabe Wrestling Radio with Honky Tonk Man
Hosts: Alan Wojcik and Spug
Airs Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET
Interview available at WildTalkRadio.com

Working in Calgary before coming to the WWE: “I was still very active in Calgary; in fact, I was the North American Heavyweight Champion I think at that point in time, or if I’m not mistaken… yeah, I think I was because Ron Starr, my partner, we were tag team champions and when those guys left and went to the Maritimes for the summer; and at that point in time I was picked up by WWE, so it was through the good graces of Stu Hart that he brokered the deal for me and gave me the rite of passage to leave Calgary to go over to the WWE. You know, Stu was the nicest guy in the world and would never hold anyone back and of course his son, that being Bret and his son-in-law, Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart, the Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith. They were, all for of them, there at the time and had went over the year before, then I came over and shortly after that I kind of left it off where Bad News Allen, which became Bad News Brown in WWE, and he came over shortly after me, six-eight months later, and that’s how it went.”

How much of the Honky Tonk Man was personally created and how much was by Vince: “That’s a very good question; I like how you put it, because it was one of those things where I had started this character down in the Southeast wrestling with the Fullers, Robert and Ron Fuller; Robert being, of course, Col. Rob Parker in the WCW days. And then, I took the character up for Stampede Wrestling, for Stu Hart and the Harts; worked on it and developed in down in the Southeast down in the Mobile and Pensicola area, then took it up to Calgary and then came back to the Mobile/Pensicola area, then back to Calgary again.

“So I spent three-five years working on this character: the black hair, the jumpsuit, the guitar thing, the interview style and all of that, so when I went over to interview with Vince McMahon; he wanted me to bring a tape so he could see something, a little piece of a match and of course some interview stuff.
Their first thing was, back then there was no creative department or anything, there was just Vince and pretty much Howard Finkel, Pat Patterson, Arnold Skaaland; I mean, those were the guys in the office when I went over there. He looked at it (the tape) and saw these visions of black sideburns and the sunglasses; he saw little foamy guitars and little jumpsuits. Vince was always into the marketing part of it.

“The wrestling thing, I heard you say earlier as part of your intro ‘you’re not supposed to say ‘wrestling’; Vince was not really into the wrestling part of it. I mean, he loved it and that’s his life, but what you did in the ring was secondary to what he had planed for you. But I had developed this character to be a bad guy, not a good guy and he envisioned it as a good guy, but eventually about six months later, it eventually went back to what I had developed, which was the bad guy character.”

Being an entertainer and perceived as a ‘cartoon’ style character working with WWE in the ’80s: “You know, it was never something that I had a problem, because there’s so many people who have said those nasty things about me over the last few years; that I was terrible in the ring, I couldn’t wrestle, I couldn’t what they call ‘work’, I was not technical by any means and all. Well, you know, thank you very much; I have never considered myself to be a wrestler. I have always been an entertainer; I entertain people and I happen to be in sport entertainment or I like to call professional wrestling ‘theatrical athletics’ and anybody who says its different must be living, they obviously come from somewhere else. But Vince understood the entertainment value of what we were doing and consequently he had a group of guys there that were entertainers and that’s what we did.”

If he thinks he would have been as successful with a different manager, other than Jimmy Hart: “I think it would have been a little more difficult. It’s like I said, I don’t know if the gears would have clicked as much with; you know Bobby was more, and I know that, from just my conversations with Rick Rude over some periods of time. Rick was one of those guys that; Rick never thought that he needed a manager, in fact, and he really didn’t. Rick was a good mouthpiece himself and of course Bobby is a mouthpiece and Bobby was Bobby and was already well established as a bad guy and had been thrown in with weasel suit matches and things like that.

“It’s difficult when your manager, when the fans are yelling while your in the ring and you’re trying to get your persona and get your character developed and get the fans to watch you; and your manager is outside and they’re chanting‘Weasel, Weasel, Weasel’. So, Rick had the problem a little bit; he thought he should have the microphone time. And Bobby was a great mouthpiece, I mean, he was fantastic on a microphone and he was perfect for someone like an Andre the Giant. He was perfect for someone, like when Captain Lou Albano was always the talker for someone, or you know The Grand Wizard. Mr. Fuji wasn’t as much of a talker as a manager; I know when he managed Don Morocco, Don did all the talking and Mr. Fuji just kind of stood there and smiled with his devious smile and facial expressions. So, I don’t know if I could have done as well with someone else other than Jimmy.”

His historic Intercontinental Title run and how it started: “It was, in bookings gone past, Vince’s father’s way of doing things and it was with a lot of promoters and bookers; they would tell you ‘Yes, we will start you (on a title run) on this date and six-eight months from now or thirteen months from now, you’re going to finish. I went to Puerto Rico and I had a starting date and they told me like nine months; when I went there it would be like nine months later, I’d be leaving on this particular month on this particular weekend and this was when I was going out, this is how they did it. But no, when it came to what we did, the way Vince (Jr.) was doing it, it was strictly on ticket sales, it was ‘Hey, if you can get the job done, you’re going to run with it.’

“And that was the whole thing with me, when they mentioned Butch Reed’s not here and they were in a panic situation because Butch was going to get the belt from Steamboat and he wasn’t there; he was AWOL that night. I just happened to walk by and Hogan and Vince were talking and Hogan said ‘What about this guy?’ and Vince took a look and said ‘Alright, maybe so’ and he pulled me off to the corner and mentioned to me about the belt. I said ‘Hey, you know Vince, I told you when I first came here if you give me a chance, and I do good, pay me.

“If I don’t do good and I can’t make it, fire me and I’ll be gone. You won’t have to fire me, I’ll pack my bag and leave.’ And that was our deal, our handshake deal and that was the way it was with the intercontinental belt. I said ‘Believe me, I don’t want a day off.’ He said, “Well, everyone needs a day off. You’ll burn out and you need to see your family every now and then.” And I said, “Listen, if you give me that belt, I will run with it as long as you want me to and as long as I can sell tickets.’ He said, ‘Ok, I like that.’ And that’s how it happened.”

If he ever had problems with people during the IC Title run: “Naw, I never had any problems with that until I won the Intercontinental Championship. I had put, even with the belt, when Jake was on his hiatus or when Steamboat left, they were left a void there for a couple months of bookings for Steamboat that had to be filled with substitutes and anytime they had a substitute, the substitute would win and made it a non-title match and the substitute would win clean, 1-2-3. I actually lost more matches than I really won if you go back and look at this thing. The only time I ever won matches was on TV, on the TV Tapings, other than that it was a DQ or Jimmy Hart got involved; we always kept the belt somehow.

“Even Steamboat, he’s gone on record saying the one match he’s never liked was losing to an Elvis impersonator. Well, you know, I look at it like this; listen ‘Dragon’, you could have lost it to a guy in a skirt blowing the bagpipes, or you could have lost it to a guy with a snake, or you could have lost it to Hulk Hogan, hey Brother with the 21-inch pythons, or you could have lost it to Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake and he could have shaved your head. You know, to say something like that, it struck a little chord with me and he was not the most professional that night. If people go back and watch this match, you’ll see I gave him about 90, or maybe 95 percent of the match was all his and let him shine and do all his stuff and by fluke and however it went down; we threw Jimmy Hart in the mix and Jimmy got hit and boom and this and I grab the rope, 1-2-3. And it was one of those things where I did everything to make this guy look good and make him be happy about it. After it was over and he back and we had return matches a couple of time, he was fine.

“You know, there’s been other guys; if Tito was here right now, I’d tell him, I hope he’s listening. Tito Santana; Oh, you’ve got to pull my feet, Jimmy Hart’s gotta hit me with a megaphone, we’ve got to knock the referee down. Oh, come on, I took that flying burrito elbow and never said a word about it, 1-2-3. But when it come time for those guys to do the favor, it was like, ‘Naw. Can we do this? Can we do that?’ There was a couple of times that went on. Yeah, you know, I never ever said anything about any of it until that came up with the Macho Man thing, and it nothing to do with Randy; Randy and I talked about it. It was all about the television thing with 35 million people.”
