Kayfabe Wrestling Radio with Honky Tonk Man
Hosts: Alan Wojcik and Spug
Airs Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET
Interview available at WildTalkRadio.com

Working in Calgary before coming to the WWE: “I was still very active in Calgary; in fact, I was the North American Heavyweight Champion I think at that point in time, or if I’m not mistaken… yeah, I think I was because Ron Starr, my partner, we were tag team champions and when those guys left and went to the Maritimes for the summer; and at that point in time I was picked up by WWE, so it was through the good graces of Stu Hart that he brokered the deal for me and gave me the rite of passage to leave Calgary to go over to the WWE. You know, Stu was the nicest guy in the world and would never hold anyone back and of course his son, that being Bret and his son-in-law, Jim ‘The Anvil’ Neidhart, the Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith. They were, all for of them, there at the time and had went over the year before, then I came over and shortly after that I kind of left it off where Bad News Allen, which became Bad News Brown in WWE, and he came over shortly after me, six-eight months later, and that’s how it went.”

How much of the Honky Tonk Man was personally created and how much was by Vince: “That’s a very good question; I like how you put it, because it was one of those things where I had started this character down in the Southeast wrestling with the Fullers, Robert and Ron Fuller; Robert being, of course, Col. Rob Parker in the WCW days. And then, I took the character up for Stampede Wrestling, for Stu Hart and the Harts; worked on it and developed in down in the Southeast down in the Mobile and Pensicola area, then took it up to Calgary and then came back to the Mobile/Pensicola area, then back to Calgary again.

“So I spent three-five years working on this character: the black hair, the jumpsuit, the guitar thing, the interview style and all of that, so when I went over to interview with Vince McMahon; he wanted me to bring a tape so he could see something, a little piece of a match and of course some interview stuff.
Their first thing was, back then there was no creative department or anything, there was just Vince and pretty much Howard Finkel, Pat Patterson, Arnold Skaaland; I mean, those were the guys in the office when I went over there. He looked at it (the tape) and saw these visions of black sideburns and the sunglasses; he saw little foamy guitars and little jumpsuits. Vince was always into the marketing part of it.

“The wrestling thing, I heard you say earlier as part of your intro ‘you’re not supposed to say ‘wrestling’; Vince was not really into the wrestling part of it. I mean, he loved it and that’s his life, but what you did in the ring was secondary to what he had planed for you. But I had developed this character to be a bad guy, not a good guy and he envisioned it as a good guy, but eventually about six months later, it eventually went back to what I had developed, which was the bad guy character.”

Being an entertainer and perceived as a ‘cartoon’ style character working with WWE in the ’80s: “You know, it was never something that I had a problem, because there’s so many people who have said those nasty things about me over the last few years; that I was terrible in the ring, I couldn’t wrestle, I couldn’t what they call ‘work’, I was not technical by any means and all. Well, you know, thank you very much; I have never considered myself to be a wrestler. I have always been an entertainer; I entertain people and I happen to be in sport entertainment or I like to call professional wrestling ‘theatrical athletics’ and anybody who says its different must be living, they obviously come from somewhere else. But Vince understood the entertainment value of what we were doing and consequently he had a group of guys there that were entertainers and that’s what we did.”

If he thinks he would have been as successful with a different manager, other than Jimmy Hart: “I think it would have been a little more difficult. It’s like I said, I don’t know if the gears would have clicked as much with; you know Bobby was more, and I know that, from just my conversations with Rick Rude over some periods of time. Rick was one of those guys that; Rick never thought that he needed a manager, in fact, and he really didn’t. Rick was a good mouthpiece himself and of course Bobby is a mouthpiece and Bobby was Bobby and was already well established as a bad guy and had been thrown in with weasel suit matches and things like that.

“It’s difficult when your manager, when the fans are yelling while your in the ring and you’re trying to get your persona and get your character developed and get the fans to watch you; and your manager is outside and they’re chanting‘Weasel, Weasel, Weasel’. So, Rick had the problem a little bit; he thought he should have the microphone time. And Bobby was a great mouthpiece, I mean, he was fantastic on a microphone and he was perfect for someone like an Andre the Giant. He was perfect for someone, like when Captain Lou Albano was always the talker for someone, or you know The Grand Wizard. Mr. Fuji wasn’t as much of a talker as a manager; I know when he managed Don Morocco, Don did all the talking and Mr. Fuji just kind of stood there and smiled with his devious smile and facial expressions. So, I don’t know if I could have done as well with someone else other than Jimmy.”

His historic Intercontinental Title run and how it started: “It was, in bookings gone past, Vince’s father’s way of doing things and it was with a lot of promoters and bookers; they would tell you ‘Yes, we will start you (on a title run) on this date and six-eight months from now or thirteen months from now, you’re going to finish. I went to Puerto Rico and I had a starting date and they told me like nine months; when I went there it would be like nine months later, I’d be leaving on this particular month on this particular weekend and this was when I was going out, this is how they did it. But no, when it came to what we did, the way Vince (Jr.) was doing it, it was strictly on ticket sales, it was ‘Hey, if you can get the job done, you’re going to run with it.’

“And that was the whole thing with me, when they mentioned Butch Reed’s not here and they were in a panic situation because Butch was going to get the belt from Steamboat and he wasn’t there; he was AWOL that night. I just happened to walk by and Hogan and Vince were talking and Hogan said ‘What about this guy?’ and Vince took a look and said ‘Alright, maybe so’ and he pulled me off to the corner and mentioned to me about the belt. I said ‘Hey, you know Vince, I told you when I first came here if you give me a chance, and I do good, pay me.

“If I don’t do good and I can’t make it, fire me and I’ll be gone. You won’t have to fire me, I’ll pack my bag and leave.’ And that was our deal, our handshake deal and that was the way it was with the intercontinental belt. I said ‘Believe me, I don’t want a day off.’ He said, “Well, everyone needs a day off. You’ll burn out and you need to see your family every now and then.” And I said, “Listen, if you give me that belt, I will run with it as long as you want me to and as long as I can sell tickets.’ He said, ‘Ok, I like that.’ And that’s how it happened.”

If he ever had problems with people during the IC Title run: “Naw, I never had any problems with that until I won the Intercontinental Championship. I had put, even with the belt, when Jake was on his hiatus or when Steamboat left, they were left a void there for a couple months of bookings for Steamboat that had to be filled with substitutes and anytime they had a substitute, the substitute would win and made it a non-title match and the substitute would win clean, 1-2-3. I actually lost more matches than I really won if you go back and look at this thing. The only time I ever won matches was on TV, on the TV Tapings, other than that it was a DQ or Jimmy Hart got involved; we always kept the belt somehow.

“Even Steamboat, he’s gone on record saying the one match he’s never liked was losing to an Elvis impersonator. Well, you know, I look at it like this; listen ‘Dragon’, you could have lost it to a guy in a skirt blowing the bagpipes, or you could have lost it to a guy with a snake, or you could have lost it to Hulk Hogan, hey Brother with the 21-inch pythons, or you could have lost it to Brutus ‘The Barber’ Beefcake and he could have shaved your head. You know, to say something like that, it struck a little chord with me and he was not the most professional that night. If people go back and watch this match, you’ll see I gave him about 90, or maybe 95 percent of the match was all his and let him shine and do all his stuff and by fluke and however it went down; we threw Jimmy Hart in the mix and Jimmy got hit and boom and this and I grab the rope, 1-2-3. And it was one of those things where I did everything to make this guy look good and make him be happy about it. After it was over and he back and we had return matches a couple of time, he was fine.

“You know, there’s been other guys; if Tito was here right now, I’d tell him, I hope he’s listening. Tito Santana; Oh, you’ve got to pull my feet, Jimmy Hart’s gotta hit me with a megaphone, we’ve got to knock the referee down. Oh, come on, I took that flying burrito elbow and never said a word about it, 1-2-3. But when it come time for those guys to do the favor, it was like, ‘Naw. Can we do this? Can we do that?’ There was a couple of times that went on. Yeah, you know, I never ever said anything about any of it until that came up with the Macho Man thing, and it nothing to do with Randy; Randy and I talked about it. It was all about the television thing with 35 million people.”

Dolph Ziggler Talks About What’s Holding Him Back In WWE & Who He Looks Up To

21

WWE’s Money in the Bank briefcase holder Dolph Ziggler is interviewed in the February 2013 issue of WWE Magazine and spoke about a number of topics, including what’s holding him back in WWE and which WWE superstar pushes him to keep improving.

Ziggler said, “I don’t listen, to a point where if I think something’s right, I’ll go ahead and do it anyway, and it’ll be the wrong thing to do. That’s what’s holding me back. I tell myself how great I am, but sometimes I’m wrong. Some people have been here a lot longer, and sometimes they’re going to be right, and damn it, I’m going to have to pay attention to that.”

John Cena is currently his top rival in WWE, but Ziggler gave props to Cena and admitted that he’s the wrestler that pushes him to keep improving.

“No matter who’s champ, he’s the franchise.” Ziggler said. “When you’re out there with him, it’s a different kind of ballgame. We are two opposite people and I can’t say that enough, and sometimes I hate his guts so much that even when I’m at home, I want to beat him up. We do not see things the same way, but we both have the same goal.”

Est. Runtime: 1 hour, 23 minutes

Solomonster rather enjoyed the wedding angle on Impact and has praise for the show. Unfortunately, TNA squandered that goodwill by screwing over their UK fans and so they get an equal amount of scorn this week. We’ll talk what the company should do, at the very least, to make up for their lack of class, plus talk about Raw’s 20th anniversary, the absurdity of Super Cena, Eve’s WWE departure and where that leaves the Divas division, using Ric Flair to endorse The Miz, why Bobby Heenan hates Tony Schiavone, and a blunt answer on why some fans hate on indy wrestling.

Jeff Hardy On His Expectations For 2013, Working With Vince McMahon And Dixie Carter, CM Punk, TLC Matches, More

20

Speaking to Wrestling101.com, TNA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy discussed his expectations for 2013, working with Vince McMahon and Dixie Carter, his on-screen feud with CM Punk and more. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

Which wrestlers inspired his early wrestling persona: “More than anybody I would have to say Sting and Ultimate Warrior combined with Sting’s charisma and the Ultimate Warrior’s insanity, those two combined just pretty much inspired me back in the day to paint my face and act strange, so I would have to put down a lot of what you see in Jeff Hardy today down to those two.”

Working with Edge, Christian and the Dudley Boyz in Tables, Ladders, and Chairs matches: “They are legendary matches, I had a ladder match against Austin Aries at one of our recent PPV’s Turning Point which was huge. But before going into that match I actually watched some of those TLC matches and the ladder matches that I’ve had with The Undertaker, Edge and CM Punk.

“Whilst watching them back I was just thinking, “oh my god these are so memorable,” we have done so much it is kind of hard to stay creative, fresh and new.

“But anytime I go back and watch those TLC matches I always think how magical they were to be a part of and they always will be, fans will talk about those matches for decades to come.”

Expectations for himself in 2013: “Hopefully to remain the world champion for as long as I can, even before the start of 2012 I set a goal for myself just to have a tremendous year and it went well beyond my expectations. I’m setting another goal for myself for 2013 and that is at Bound for Glory I want to perform a song from my bands album live on the PPV and hopefully I can achieve that.”

Similarities and differences between Vince McMahon and Dixie Carter: “I love Vince McMahon, I don’t have anything bad to say about him, we get along, we have had our ups and downs but he was a great boss. With Dixie it is more about family, like my daughter actually knows her kids and it is much more family like here in TNA and that is kind of what I like.

“Naturally the schedule is a lot more laid back so whenever I can have more time with my family that is crazy important. I think Dixie is a lot more personal whereas Vince is more professional.”

Working with CM Punk: “It was great working with CM Punk, we have different beliefs in terms of our outlook on life but he is so talented it’s crazy, we had many great matches together and it was a pleasure to work with him.”

The full interview is available here.

Mr. Anderson Interview – State Of TNA In 2013, Racy Aces & 8’s Segment, Super Bowl Picks

2

Mr. Anderson joined 4th & Pain, with Redskins defensive end Adam Carriker and former wrestling announcer Chuck Carroll, to talk about the state of company in 2013 and the NFL playoffs.

Before discussions turned to squared circle, Anderson made his Super Bowl predictions and believes the San Francisco 49ers will be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after defeating the Baltimore Ravens.

He told Carriker and Chuck a funny story about taping a segment for Impact a couple weeks ago in which he encouraged his wife to tell her grandmother not to watch the show. He was concerned about them seeing girls sitting in his lap and playing with a beer bottle.

After the segment aired, his wife watched it on the DVR and promptly invited her mother to watch as well. They were none too thrilled!

As for what people can expect out of TNA in 2013, Anderson says a lack of long-term planning has been killing the wrestling business. Now, the company is taking the time to look into the future and develop well thought out storylines and not rush and hustle to create content which will be beneficial for fans.

Antonio Cesaro Talks About His US Title Run & Why He Has No Fear In WWE

16

During a recent interview with DailyBulletin.com to promote Saturday’s WWE live event from the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Canada, WWE United States Champion Antonio Cesaro gave some storyline-driven comments about his success in WWE:

“I was very excited (to win the United States Championship) because I set my goals and worked really hard for it,” he said. “I wanted the championship to show everybody that the `American Dream’ is hard work – you have to work your way up to be very very successful, but that’s what I did.”

“I don’t think there’s any American who can beat me. I’m the greatest United States Champion in history.”

Cesaro said there are certain WWE superstars that he respects, but he does not fear losing his belt any time soon:

“I have respect for the other superstars … but I wouldn’t say I fear anybody. Fear is what holds you back. Right now, my focus and goal is on the United States Championship, to defend (it) well, and to prove my point that nobody can beat me. The Royal Rumble is coming, and I have my eye on that as well.”

Christopher Daniels Talks Long Term Goals, Unbreakable 2005 & More

2

TNA star Christopher Daniels was recently interviewed by aayFabe Kickout. Here’s a recap of what Daniels said about

Staying In Shape: “What I do I try different things ahead of time, I don’t get stuck in one rut and I don’t do the same workout for more than a month at at time. I’m very interested in keeping my endurance up, my stamina up, I keep my rest periods short and I try to do as much compound movement as i can. Not isolation, but a lot of compound exercises, stuff designed to work the whole the body, to get the full body workout. I do a lot of yoga, it keeps you flexible and you recover from injury quickly and I try to keep my heart rate up the entire time. I don’t spend hours upon hours in the gym, I go in for about an hour at at time and that’s how you get the best results.”

His Long Term Goals: “Well I’m just gonna have fun until I stop having fun, if it ever became more work than it was fun I said to myself I was gonna get out. If I can’t wrestle at the same level, or at the top level that I want to wrestle I’m gonna get out. I feel like I’m wrestling the best matches of my career, I’m in the best shape of my life. I can wrestle 25 or 30 minute matches if I have to, so at this point in my career I’m nowhere close to hanging up the boots.”

His Classic Match with AJ Styles & Samoa Joe at TNA Unbreakable 2005: “It’s the one match that I’m complimented on the most and it’s the best match that we’ve done in the Impact Zone. I’ve had some great matches, I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great wrestlers. That was such a special crowd that night, they were so psyched to see three guys that were TNA originals wrestle in the main event, in a style that they can appreciate in the X-Division and all the stars were aligned that night for that particular match.”

She could face up to 18 months in jail, although it’s it’s unlikely she’ll receive that punishment since these are her first DUI charges. The case is scheduled to go before the judge later this month.

*SPOILERS* TNA Impact Wrestling Tapings Results For Next Week (1/24)

13

TNA taped next week’s episode of Impact Wrestling Friday night from Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. Credit to Scott Brooks and Wrestling News World for the results:

Impact Wrestling (Airing Thursday, January 24, 2013 on Spike TV):

* In a Knockout’s Title Match, Tara w/Jesse defeated Velvet Sly via Tara pinning Velvet and Jesse holding Velvet’s feet down so she couldn’t kick out. Velvet at one point hit her finisher and had the match won if not for a distraction from Jesse.

* Joseph Park came out for a promo. He said how hd has learned that his place is not behind a desk but as an active member of the Impact roster. He said he is looking for that win, or “W” as the boys call it and mentioned that next week in the UK was Open Fight Night and mentioned how he is excited to have his televised debut as a trained wrestler. He mentions how next week he promises to get that W. He doesn’t know who he will call out yet but he is going to study tapes/take notes and keep “Kay fab” about it before saying that next week the UK, the US, and the whole world will see what he can do.

* Zema Ion & Kenny King defeated Christian York & Rob Van Dam. I can’t remember who took the fall but King worked him over and Ion made a blind tag and stole the fall. The two got into words about it after.

* Bully Ray and Brooke Hogan came out and looked for Taz who was not at the announce table with Mike Tenay and Todd Keneley. They then went to the ring and Ray said he expected a move like this from Devon but not Taz. He mentioned how the thing that made Ray the most angry was how this hurt everyone around him from Sting to Hulk to Brooke. He threatened to take out each member of Aces & Eights one by one but said he cannot do that while he is suspended. He said he knows Hulk Hogan is not in the building but he knows he is watching at home and implored Hogan to lift the suspension. Sting’s music hit and he defended Ray and told Hulk to “let his new son-in-law” get back into things and said how we will get the answer next week in the UK.

* Bobby Roode beat Hernandez via bulldog. As the match progressed and Hernandez was going for his trademark dive to the outside, Austin Aries came out and moved Roode out of the way. Chavo Guerrero and Aries got into a brawl and the ref was distracted allowing Roode to hit a bulldog and win. After, Aries was trying to tell Ray “we did it” but Roode was saying it was all him. Aries celebrated anyway.

* Kurt Angle came out and said that Aces & Eights are in it for the long haul and he wants payback. He mentions Open Fight Night is next week and calls out Mr. Anderson for it as well as calling him to the ring to say something to him personally. Anderson came out (notably to his own music despite wearing in A&8?s cut). Anderson mocked Angle for a bit before saying he wanted to do things right now. He attacked Angle but Angle made a comeback and nearly out him in an Ankle Lock but Anderson bailed. Angle then said that next week the two will face in a Steel Cage Match.

* For the TNA World Title, Jeff Hardy retained over Christopher Daniels w/Kazarian. Very good match. Kazarian attempted to get involved before Hardy shoved Daniels into him, hit the Twist of Fate and a Swanton for the defense.

* After, Taz came down from the announce table and chastised Hardy a bit. Couldn’t quite hear him due to people around me but I am pretty certain he was mentioning how Hardy may have a target on his back and an Aces & Eights member came in the ring and hit Hardy in the back of a leg with a hammer, requiring Hardy to need help to the back from referees.

NOTE: I never saw when Taz show up at the booth, but he wasn’t there when they did the Ray promo at least or prior to that.

Xplosion

* Mickie James defeated Brooke Tessmacher with a roll-up.

* James Storm defeated Kazarian via Last Call after Kazarian attempted to dodge a charge from Storm in the corner.

* Samoa Joe defeated Zema Ion via Muscle Buster.
