Mick Foley Talks About Ryback’s WWE Title Shot, Linda’s Campaign Spending

2

– To update Linda McMahon’s spending on her United States Senate campaign, Newsday.com reports that the former WWE CEO has now spent approximately $42.6 million on her current bid, almost matching the $50 million she spent in 2010.

– Here’s what Mick Foley told WWE.com about Ryback’s WWE title host against CM Punk tonight at Hell in a Cell:

“If there was ever a time not to hold anything back, it is in this match. We haven’t seen Ryback pushed past the five-minute mark. Five minutes would be a long Ryback match … [Punk] had a day off and spent it running a marathon; that is a guy who is in prime condition.”

JBL Blogs About Tonight’s Hell In A Cell Pay-Per-View

7

WWE announcer JBL has posted a blog update on Facebook.com hyping tonight’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. Here’s what JBL said about:

Tonight’s PPV From Atlanta: “Great cardio session this morning getting ready for PPV tonight in Atlanta. Hard to believe during the ‘Attitude Era’ that we would be here in Atlanta and WCW would be no more, especially the year they were beating us in ratings.

The Attitude Era: “Loved the ‘Attitude Era’ but also enjoying being back, I think the shift to a more PG product is good for business. Was easy in ‘Attitude Era’ to take shortcuts and now one has to think harder to get an edge and get ‘over’. I like the challenge, but I’m just an announcer-those that respond to the challenge will do very well.”

Ryback’s First PPV Main Event: “Huge challenge tonight for many, especially Ryback-I think he will do great, but you never know until it happens. A HUGE difference between wrestling top guys and closing a PPV. This is truly baptism by fire. My bet? I think Ryback does well, he’s out there with ‘the best in the world’ so expectations are very high. Sink or swim, lights are on bright.”

Jim Ross Weighs In On CM Punk vs. Ryback At Hell In a Cell

6

Jim Ross discussed tomorrow night’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event in a blog post on his official website, www.jrsbarbq.com. Highlights are as follows:

The pressure to perform well on pay-per-view: “Ryback will feel great pressure to deliver on Sunday and there’s nothing wrong with that. Any talent who tries to maintain that they’re “cooler than the other side of the pillow” on Game Day, IE a PPV, is fooling themselves and providing a disservice to everyone involved in the equation.

“I’ve done my share of PPV broadcasts over the years and I assure you that I will be nervous/anxious to do my very best work Sunday in a new role for me on PPV and likely within a challenging, three man broadcast team that I assume will be comprised by @MichaelCole and @JCLayfield along with yours truly. Damn right I’ll be nervous but I take great pride in my work and getting the opportunity to return to the PPV announce team is big for me.”

What to expect at Hell in a Cell: “I see a ‘hungry,’ no pun intended, Ryback, whose WWE career has not been without challenges, fully realize the opportunity that has presented itself and will have the best bout that any of us have ever seen from the powerhouse. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. If any broadcaster goes into a show feeling negative about the event that they’re going to broadcast then the broadcast suffers and the fans get cheated. I’m not going to cheat any fans.

“I see Punk pulling out all the stops to make this likely, show closing main event memorable and to add even more respect from his peers and to take another step closer to legitimately being regarded as ‘The Best in the World.'”

Calling Hell in a Cell in Atlanta: “For those that have followed my career, you know that this Sunday’s event is going to be special for me. I’m being provided the opportunity to return to broadcast a WWE PPV in a city that I loved living in and where a nice portion of my professional legacy was established back in the WCW days.”

Kofi Kingston Talks About Wrestling The Miz At HIAC & What’s Next For Him

21

– WWE Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston recently spoke with the Creative Loafing Atlanta website to promote Sunday’s Hell In a Cell pay-per-view. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

How His Past Experience With The Miz Will Help Him In His Title Defense At HIAC:

Yeah, the Miz and I have feuded for the Intercontinental Championship before and for the United States Championship. I feel like this time it’s a little bit different. This isn’t about finesse or anything like that. It’s about both of us being able to show different sides of our characters that we haven’t really had the opportunity to show in the past. So I think this one’s a little bit more special and we have our noses to the grindstone. We’re both pretty excited about being able to showcase these different sides of ourselves.

How Important Is It For Him To Retain The IC Title?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure we were gaining momentum around the same time. We’re both trying to do everything we can to kick, claw and scratch our way into that main event track to the top. I think you’re seeing a lot of that. As a WWE superstar, it can be frustrating sometimes because we’re the best athletes in the world and we all want to be the best. Anything less than that is unsatisfying. He and I both have an opportunity to step our games up, which is kind of what we’ve been doing over the past couple of weeks. A lot of people have been talking about this rivalry we’ve had and we’ve really only had about two weeks to build it. I think we’ve both done a good job of that and I see it as an opportunity to step up and be noticed in a different way. I’m sure he’s feeling the same way. So when you have two guys who are that hungry for the same thing in the ring against each other, both wanting to steel the show every night, it makes for a great match.

What’s Next For Him After This Sunday:

I don’t try to look too far into the future because things change so much and you have no idea what’s going to happen, who’s going to get hurt, what’s going to get shuffled around. But Hell in a Cell is going to be an amazing pay-per-view. The Miz and I will definitely have an amazing match, but I have no idea what the future holds. All I can do is the best I can do in this moment.

WWE(R) STUDIOS AND ABC FAMILY CAPTURE THE HOLIDAYS WITH “CHRISTMAS BOUNTY”

WWE SUPERSTAR, THE MIZ, WILL STAR IN A LEAD ROLE

STAMFORD, Conn., October 26, 2012 – WWE Studios (NYSE:WWE) and ABC Family today announced that WWE Studios and ABC Family are developing an upcoming television movie, Christmas Bounty, for a 2013 world premiere during ABC Family’s popular “25 Days of Christmas” programming event. WWE Superstar, The Miz, is attached to star in a lead role.

Christmas Bounty is an action-filled comedy about a former bounty hunter turned elementary schoolteacher. Determined to have a normal life and keep her bounty hunter past a secret, she reluctantly returns home for Christmas to help save the family business by catching the one bounty that got away. But when her fiancé follows her home for the holiday, she struggles to hide her wild family business and a bounty hunter ex-boyfriend she thought she’d left behind. Written by Andrew Black & Vivian Lee, and James Berg & Stan Zimmerman, the movie is scheduled to go into production in early 2013.

“We are so pleased to partner with a tremendous network like ABC Family,” said Michael Luisi, President, WWE Studios. “25 Days of Christmas is one of the biggest cable programming events of the year and is the perfect release platform for this engaging holiday title.”

“ABC Family is the destination for holiday programming and is known for great original holiday movies. We’re thrilled to partner with WWE Studios and bring WWE’s passionate fan base to ABC Family and our wonderful 25 Days of Christmas programming event with such a fun movie,” added Kate Juergens, Executive Vice President, Original Series Programming and Development, ABC Family.

The Miz has been a devoted WWE fan his whole life, and most recently starred in WWE’s film “The Marine 3: Homefront.” MTV’s Real World alum Mike “The Miz” Mizanin competed on the fourth season of WWE’s reality show Tough Enough in hopes of winning a contract to become a WWE Superstar. After finishing as the runner-up, The Miz didn’t give up on his dream and continued to train once the show concluded. Now, his hard work is being rewarded as the reality TV Star with the frat boy looks, sophomoric humor and explosive intensity is living out his dream at the top of the WWE roster.

Bradley Buchanan, Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs, negotiated on behalf of WWE Studios.

MAILBAG: Is Hulk Hogan Still a Big Money Draw in 2012?

37

SEScoops Mailbag for October 26th

(please submit YOUR questions to [email protected]) or via @solomonster!

Q: If WCW [and ECW had each] not gone out of business in 2001, where in your opinion would the wrestling business be right now? – @tommygunner89

A: This is an impossible question to answer. Had Eric Bischoff and his group of investors bought WCW and kept its television slots, I think it would very much be in the same position TNA finds itself in. Had Bischoff’s planned re-launch not been well-received and the investors pulled out, or if TNT decided to boot wrestling off its network, it would have died. But maybe he re-launches the WCW brand with some really creative ideas and it takes off? Who knows. I do believe that ECW wouldn’t be around today either way. It was a style that simply could not keep up at the pace it was going. But more than that, much like with WCW, it comes down to funding and a good cable slot, neither of which I don’t think they would have had.

Q: I know that Stone Cold wasn’t happy about being booked with Scott Hall at WrestleMania 18. Who did he want to face? – @phc_99

A: I don’t know that Austin didn’t like being booked with Scott Hall as much as he disliked being booked in a match that was almost an afterthought. He was, or had been, the biggest star in wrestling and felt he was being pushed down the card. Really, you could argue his match was only the 4th biggest attraction that night, behind Rock/Hogan, Jericho/HHH and Undertaker/Flair. I don’t recall hearing that Austin had any particular opponent in mind other than he was against the idea of facing Hulk Hogan.

Q: How long do you think the lawsuit TNA has on WWE will last? – @TheeScout101

A: WWE could probably pay to make it all go away tomorrow if they wanted to. Should they choose not to do that, the lawsuit could drag on for months or years. That’s a terrible thing for any talent in TNA that wants to leave for WWE because Jerry McDevitt, WWE’s attorney, has stated that they will not sign any TNA performers so long as this lawsuit is ongoing. With rumors of Ric Flair possibly appearing on Raw this Monday as the new GM, he could be the exception, though he hasn’t been under TNA contract since May and his non-compete has already expired.

Q: Who should be the first man to unequivocally defeat Ryback? Undertaker, Cena, or a new rising star? – @LeeWes

A: Anybody but Undertaker or John Cena is fine with me. There is absolutely no reason for either of them to hand Ryback his first loss.

Q: Do you think if Undertaker had faced either Hulk Hogan or Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania that we would be talking about a streak today? – @Mark_A_Dodson

A: I think it is safe to assume we would not.

Q: Traditionally in tag matches, [the babyface] team faces the hard camera while the heels have their backs to hard camera. Any notable exceptions and why? – @deturbulence

A: I’m sure there have been exceptions, but none that I can think of right now. I’d imagine the reason this is done is to make sure the fans at home can see the eventual hot tag when the babyface comes in and cleans house. It kind of ruins it if their back is to the viewing audience and all we can see is the guy’s ass.

Q: My question today is about Hulk Hogan. Do you think he’s still a big money-making draw in the wrestling business? There seem to be contrasting viewpoints as to whether or not his time at Impact Wrestling has been good for the company. I know he costs them a lot of money, but I’m not sure if he really makes money for them. Basically, I’d like your opinion as to whether or not you think Hogan has the capabilities of doing big business today. Furthermore, do you think his ability (or inability) to draw has more to do with his age or the fact that he’s tainted his legacy via family affairs, money problems, and the sex tape? – Matt I.

A: I would argue that Hogan’s value to TNA comes in the form of his name and ability to garner mainstream press for them. With the sex tape and such, that comes with a price, but when Hogan is able to appear on shows like Fox & Friends or Howard Stern and promote the latest pay-per-view, that’s a value to TNA. He’s not just promoting one event, he’s promoting a brand name that may often get confused with WWE. Now, is that worth all of the money they are likely paying him? That’s debatable, and I’m not even sure how much of that money may actually be coming from Spike TV. I think the days of Hogan as a major draw in wrestling are over. He cannot wrestle a match, even a tag match as evidenced by him being kept out of that Aces and Eights match at Bound for Glory. His back is screwed up that badly. If he were in better physical shape, then there would absolutely be money in Hogan against another big name like a Steve Austin or John Cena, but it’s just not possible. To answer your question, it has everything to do with his age and physical condition and little to do with his divorce or the sex tape. Wrestling fans don’t care about that. If they did, he’d be getting catcalls in the Impact Zone, but they still cheer him like a hero.

Q: I have a question for you today involving WWE signing Ric Flair. If WWE signs Ric Flair, would that bring [their dealings with] Bruno Sammartino to a close? I know that Bruno and Flair disagree with each other and if WWE signs Flair, then [Bruno] will not even discuss the Hall of Fame. – Shane Walker

A: Bruno isn’t interesting in discussing the Hall of Fame anyway, so it doesn’t matter. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Q: I have been liking the pairing of Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara lately, and with the way the tag team division is going, I thought they too should get a team name and I have thought of one that could work. What do you think about “The Mysterious Sins” as a team name for them? – Billy from Tennessee

A: I like my idea of “Rey-Sins” better. Because when you say it fast, it sounds like raisins, which is funny. No? Anyone? Oh piss off, all of you.

Keep those questions coming to [email protected] or @solomonster on Twitter!

TNA Recently Rejected Mike Graham’s Job Request, Christian York Appearing On “Gut Check”, TNA In Missouri

He was instantly rejected by company officials.

– As announced on Thursday’s episode of Impact Wrestling, 35-year-old journeyman wrestler Christian York will compete on “Gut Check” on next week’s show. He competed on the promotion’s inaugural pay-per-view event in 2002, teaming with Joey Mathews against Bo Dupp and Stan Dupp, but was unable to secure a full-time position with the organization, nor WWE. Now after 16 years in wrestling, he feels this is his last chance to make it in the big time.

Dolph Ziggler Says He Looks Up To and Hates John Cena, Plans To Be More Selfish In The Wrestling Ring

30

Arda Ocal (@arda_ocal.) of the Score TV in Canada and the Baltimore Sun recently had the chance to speak with WWE Superstar Dolph Ziggler about a number of topics. Highlights from the interview are as follows:

How he feels about Zack Ryder’s show ‘Z: True Long Island Story’ potentially ending: “You can’t blame that kid for making something out of nothing. He’s the reason we have a partnership with YouTube. He’s one of the main reasons we have all this new social media interaction and WWE is so big on twitter and we get so many different things trending. All because this kid tries something new outside of the box, to go out there and try and get the fans and WWE to notice him and boy did it pay off for him. And not matter what happens in the end, it was a ground breaking, outside of the box maneuver and he did it and I was more than happy to be a part of it because I thought it was something really unique and really cool.”

His thoughts on 3 hour RAW and how the extra hour benefits himself and others: “There’s a lot of up and coming Superstars who get maybe 30 seconds of a backstage scene, or maybe get to talk for a quick second, or you see him for a minute or two on T.V., every Superstar is fighting every week to be a part of ‘I just want to be on T.V. for a few minutes. I just want to let everyone see how good I am at this’. I’m one of the ones who’s constantly fighting every week for 30 seconds of air time, or maybe 5 seconds of a promo. And with this extra hour, it’s a chance to create new Superstars.”

Where a rivalry with John Cena ranks for him in his career: “He’s been someone that I’ve looked up to, but also hated for the last five years, because he is the face, he is the franchise of the WWE. And there’s been guys that have become World Champion and WWE Champion who are still second fiddle to what John Cena and whatever he has going on in his life. So this guy is the guy to be in the ring with. This is the guy to go toe to toe on the mic with. This is the guy to be in the matches with that you will be in the main event. And instead of everyone going ‘Hey you had a great match. You should have been in the main event’ people will be telling me ‘Hey, it was a great match. There’s a reason why you’re in the main event out there with John Cena, because you do what you do better than everyone else.'”

Other topics discussed include:
His reputation of making others look good in the ring and being pigeon holed as “that guy”
What does he need to do to be more selfish in his matches and career
His ‘preemptive’ comments as the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Is he looking forward to the next chapter: The Main Event?
WWE’s Partnership with HULU
Is he the type of guy to boast about his hits on online programming?
How often he watches his own matches?

Simon Dean Interview – Ryback’s Ascension, Who He Sees As A Top Star, Dolph Ziggler Being A Midcarder, CM Punk

16

Mike Bucci, who appeared in WWE as Simon Dean and ECW as Hollywood Nova, joined the VOC Wrestling Nation to discuss the career of Ryback, and how he ascended from a failed WWE Developmental project to being at the top of the card at WWE Hell in a Cell. Bucci was one of the head trainers when WWE Developmental was in Ohio Valley.

The VOC Wrestling Nation is the flagship program of the VOC Nation Radio Network, and can be heard every Wednesday at 5PM ET WORLDWIDE at VocNation.com.

Bucci discussed a variety of topics, and the entire interview can be heard at VocNation.com. Here are some highlights:

On being on the trainers in OVW that worked with Ryback: “I love the guy. People are looking at the guy like he’s an overnight success, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Ryback was originally discovered by Ty Bailey (former head of WWE developmental) to be a contestant for the first season of Tough Enough and he didn’t make it through. I guess they just didn’t think he had “it” at that time.

On Ryback being a wrestling fan: “He got signed to OVW and they used to call him the Silverback. This dude trained so hard inside the ring and out of it. He is a true wrestling fan; in this business, if you’re not a wrestling fan, you will not last. You’ll make money and get over, but there is a difference between making money and drawing money. The guys in this business who draw money are usually the guys who are fans of the business. He is a true fan and a great guy.”

On Ryback being compared to Goldberg: “Bill Goldberg came in and made wrestling cool. He was a butt kicker, and everyone knew who he was. There are three types of fans: 1)People who will always watch wrestling; 2) People who will never watch wrestilng; and 3) People who will watch wrestling when they think it’s cool to watch it, and Bill Goldberg brought out those types of fans. People are still talking about Bill Goldberg 10 years after his last match. (Ryback has the potential to be that.)”

On why Ryback will succeed: “(Ryback) busted his ass so hard to make it. This guy will not be a drug addict, he will not be a goof; he will not embarrass the company. If I were a kid right now, I would love this guy; he looks like a real life superhero. He’s a larger than life figure. When he comes out, you know things are going to happen, and people are going to get hurt. When you look at the roster, there is nobody else like that right now.”

On Ryback being able to survive as a character: “Vince always goes to the muscle guy. They had it with Cena for a long time. (Ryback) has a ton of personality. He can talk, he can do all of that; but people are going to pay to see him kick ass. They’re trying to build a star, so for me (on Sunday at WWE Hell in a Cell), he HAS to win. He’s gotta hit the finish 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring, no screwjobs. Wrestling titles are fake, nobody wins the title, it’s given to you. They have the opportunity to do something special here, and I hope they don’t screw it up.”

On the days of a slow build-up of a star being gone: “The slow build is done. There are so many channels on TV, and we live in an ADD society. People don’t have as much commitment anymore to sit there and salivate over a guy that they hope is being created over 6 months. “

On building the company around one particular guy: “Fans see the WWE as a show, and the guys on the show just happen to be part of that show…there is only one group of people that can’t be replaced on that roster and that’s the McMahon family. That’s why Vince made himself into the top heel in the late 90s. He knew that he was the only guy he could count on that would not leave for WCW. When you’re a WWE fan, you’re a fan of the brand. There’s never going to be another Rock, or another Stone Cold.”

On who are the top guys of the future: “Damien Sandow is a STAR, and they dropped the ball on him for 10 years. I told everyone who would listen that he was a star. When he failed the first time, he went to Puerto Rico and reinvented himself. What you see now is what he is in real life. This guy was at my house and had a conversation with my wife’s dog; that’s how nuts he is. (Damien) is in the top 5 of the workers in that company right now. I’m talking about the ability to work a gimmick, control the crowd, talk on the mic, and have a believable character. And he’s 6’4 260lbs.

On Dolph Ziggler and why he stays in the mid card: “He’s a great dude; he busted his ass. (Dolph) is successful because he’s a true wrestling fan. The people want him so bad, and if they don’t (push him) soon, they run the risk of having him always look like that guy who will never get over the hump.”

On CM Punk: “I have never seen anybody defy the odds of what he’s done. It doesn’t make any sense on how he got to where he is. So many people bashed him along the way, and only one guy believed in him: Vince McMahon. He doesn’t even look like a wrestler, but he hung in there and he made it.
