TNA Reportedly Signs Xion, Tara Comments On Tag Title Victory

6

— TNA Wrestling has reportedly signed Shiima Xion, who participated in the Four-way X Division Showcase tournament final at Destination X. He says he will be appearing on television soon as Zema Ion.

— Tara posted a blog on her official website relaying her gratitude for winning the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Championship with Miss Tessmacher last Thursday on Impact Wrestling.

She wrote, “I want to discuss the Tag Team belts for a minute. I have been wrestling for 12 years, longer than any female in either WWE or TNA. But I am still a huge fan of the industry. When the wrestlers are watching the show backstage, and someone does some crazy maneuver, the loudest reaction is always from me. And no organization will give a wrestler, or superstar ; ), the opportunity to be in a position to win a championship belt if they didn’t have faith in their character and ability. They used to kid me at WWE because I was so proud of my belt when I had it, and I would carry it around with me backstage. But after I won the tag team belt, I saw Eric Bischoff and Hulk Hogan watching the show backstage. I thanked them for the opportunity. At first they thought I was joking because I’m a veteran but I was still sooo excited about winning it.

“I have heard it debated whether there needs to be a Women’s Tag Team Belt. And when I was training in MMA, I’ve heard people question the validity of a pro wrestling belt. But let me say this on behalf of Miss Tessmacher and I…we worked very hard to earn these belts. We love them. And every time that we put them on the line, you are guaranteed to see our best and get an unparalleled match. Because we’re the Champs.”

Video: Hulk Hogan Hypes New Saints Row Video Game

TNA star Hulk Hogan was at the big Comic-Con event in San Diego over the weekend and spoke with Alex Verrey of Mad Catz about the new Saints Row: The Third video game, which Hogan did some voice work for:

RVD Talks About TNA’s Lack Of Brand Recognition & More

15

TNA star Rob Van Dam was recently interviewed by The Miami Herald and had a lot of critical things to say about his time with the promotion thus far. Here are some highlights of what RVD said about:

Young Talent Not Asking Him For Advice: “I feel like I get respect, but not in that way. I’m open to it. Most of the guys, I don’t know if they don’t feel welcome to ask me or any of the other veterans or what. That is probably an issue that we have is the young guys should ask some of the older guys. They should be saying, ‘Hey, watch my match. Let me know what I can improve on.’ That never happens enough. Some of the young guys who are or were there, I don’t want to mention any names. There were two young guys who just left and looked like they were out of high school. The whole time they were there, they never introduced themselves or shook my hand. Things are way different than they used to be.”

Being Misused In TNA: “I can’t say that I have been utilized to the fullest. I’d say very much not, but I don’t want that to come off as a complaint because I really like my deal with TNA. I’m very professional and there for whatever they need me to do. Having said that, I still care about my character and my career, and I’m very easy to get along with.”

TNA’s Lack of Brand Recognition:  “We don’t have it. We have less than a handful of third party licensees, where as the big companies like with WCW there were a lot more. When they were around, they had a couple a hundred licensees. We need to get the TNA Impact Wrestling brand out there. ”

“The most common comment I hear every day from fans that spot me for the first time at a restaurant, mall or beach. The one comment I get is, ‘RVD, you’re my favorite wrestler. What happened? Are you not wrestling anymore? Why did you retire?’ I get that all the time. It’s not a bad downside for the deal I have, but it’s something I put up with. I’m always like an ambassador. I would say, ‘You got Spike TV? The show is on Thursday nights at 9.’”

“That tells me there is a void there, where a lot of wrestling fans have yet to catch onto this product. Brand recognition is so important. When I was with WWE, people would have me sign merchandise that I didn’t even know existed. I would go, ‘What the f—? There is an RVD outlet cover for your wall? I had no idea.’”

“With TNA, unfortunately right now, we are dealing with T-shirts, action figures, trading cards and then a few key chains or something. That is all we got. We have a handheld game, I guess. I don’t think that many people know about it. Then we have a big void. I’m hoping at this weekend at the Comic-Con in San Diego that the TNA office will meet some third party licensees.”

Former WWE champion CM Punk is currently on hiatus, but he’s still being advertised for tonight’s show by the Hampton Coliseum website. Sin Cara Erased From SummerSlam Poster, HHH Attends Wedding

41

— Days after being suspended by WWE for a violation of the organization’s Talent Wellness Program, Sin Cara has been removed from all SummerSlam promotional material. His image is no longer featured on the promotional poster, nor the microsite.

Regarding the masked grappler’s status with WWE, many employees are under the impression that management “had decided to cut bait on him.” Creative wasn’t informed until a day or two prior to Money in the Bank that he needed to be written off television and were also told to not “put any thought into any scenarios for him going forward.” A final decision regarding his immediate future has not been made.

— Triple H attended Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s wedding, which took place Saturday in Ohio Township, Pennsylvania. “Big Ben” is a huge wrestling fan, and guest hosted an episode of Monday Night Raw in October 2009.

Melina Writes About Her Character, Says She’s Not Really Bad

19

Melina has posted a blog on her official website explaining her television character’s motives, which she feels WWE hasn’t suitably developed since she’s sparingly featured on Monday Night Raw.

“It is a mystery on why I turned heel,” Melina wrote. “You have no idea how many people don’t even know if I’m good or bad because they really can’t tell. Without explanation or a story, how is a person to know?”

She continued, “Wrestling is an art. To be able to create magic you gotta develop the character and tell the story through wrestling as well as in promo segments and backstage segments. Since I haven’t wrestled on Raw in months… (note – Melina wrote this days before her match with Kelly Kelly on Raw) I will write the story and see where we can go from there.”

The WWE Diva stresses that her character on television is merely that, as she’s not bad in real life.

“Now I am going to do these write ups in character. I can’t stress enough how this is a character. We are entertainers. I am the same Melina you talk to on Twitter, you see on the videos (except for the message to Gail video…. which I thought would be great character development but everyone went nuts and took it too far) and the same Melina that talks to you in the web chats.”

She continued, “I’m labeling this DIVA Melina to emphasize that this is not the REAL Me. This is the WWE character. The “Diva.” I am going to write a good DIVA Melina Entry soon (in character) but for now let me tell you my view of the character for now.”

Melina goes on to explain why her character went from being bad to being good years ago, and then bad again late last year. She also predicts that her character will take a sinister turn in the ensuing months.

Kane Sidelined Following Injury Angle On SmackDown

30

WWE.com announced Saturday that Kane will be sidelined for at least three months due to a fractured fibula. He sustained the injury while being attacked by Mark Henry, which occurred moments after Randy Orton defeated the multi-time champion in a Street Fight.

Mark Henry injures Kane

Similar to what he did to Big Show at Money in the Bank, Mark Henrybrutalized Kane’s leg using a steel chair on the July 22 edition of SmackDown. The attack occurred just moments after Orton defeated Kane in a brutal Street Fight.

According to WWE doctor Michael Sampson, Kane suffered a fractured fibula, which will keep him out of the ring for at least three months. “But because of potential complications with such a severe injury, it could also keep him out of action for an undetermined amount of time,” Sampson said.

Transcript Of Sin Cara Interview Discussing WWE Suspension

11

Below is a transcript (which has been translated from Spanish to English) of Sin Cara discussing the circumstances behind his WWE suspension earlier this week with Record, a Mexican sports publication.

The Record: Are you surprised by this situation?

Sin Cara: Why did they suspend me? They haven’t told me anything.

Record: How did you find out?

Cara: I found out just now.

Record: What do you think happened? You’re one of the guys who has had a lot of success there.

Cara: I’m going to talk to them to find out what’s going on because they told me [wait] until tomorrow.

Record: You’re talking with them tomorrow to clear this up? How has this affected you?

Cara: Well yeah, they haven’t told me anything bad. This hasn’t affected me because they would have told me something.

Record: Why did they suspend you?

Cara: I don’t know. What happened is I have pain and I injected something, I think it caused the test to be positive, they didn’t tell me anything. Supposedly steroids but lots of medications have steroids.

Record: What body part did you inject? Is this some type of injury?

Cara: It’s an injection I normally get in Mexico.

Record: Oh so something you’ve done previously? What body part?

Cara: My knee.

Record: The same one that’s been giving you small problems here and there?

Cara: Yes.

Record: So you’re going to meet them and get more information.

Cara: Yes.

Record: Do you have a date on when you’ll be back?

Cara:No, like I said they haven’t told me anything, I just found out but I’d like to know. They told me not to worry about anything, nothing is going on, that we’d talk tomorrow, that’s all they told me. I think until I talk to them tomorrow I’ll know what’s going on.

Record: Do you have a message for your fans?

Cara: Thanks for their support, the fans know I’m not a drug addict, much less am I taking anything. I’m not sure what happened, it looks like it was from the medication, let’s wait and see what happens. Because my body doesn’t really look like it’s on steroids, If this were a drug thing they would have fired me. I’ve very grateful for the public’s support and we’ll wait and see what happens.

MAILBAG: When Did WWE’s Attitude Era Officially End For You?

42

SEScoops Mailbag for July 23rd

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: Curious, does it look to anyone else like Kurt Angle has lost a pretty good bit of weight? He’s not as “thick” as he once was, particularly in his face and neck, and he’s not nearly as well built as he was in the upper body. Pretty sure it’s a training regimen for what he claims will be an Olympic run, but do you think he’s just busting ass to get down in weight, or do you think it’s a lack of “chemical enhancers” that formerly made him thicker? It almost looks like he’s got an illness or something. – Steve

A: He’s actually looked this way for some time now, long before he announced his intentions to train for another Olympic run. As a matter of fact, not long after he migrated to TNA from WWE, he lost a ton of weight and looked downright frail. When I saw him at a TNA house show at Webster Hall in New York City back in February 2008, watching him in the ring against Christian, the difference in his physique was startling. Part of it, he’s claimed, is also slimming down for movie roles. The fact is, we can take an educated guess as to why Kurt is smaller now than he used to be and if that means he’s healthier, then more power to him.

Q: Since WCW went under in 2001, guys like Rey Mysterio, Booker T and Goldberg have all come to WWE and won championships, but its always been the World Heavyweight and never the WWE Title. Am I correct on this? – Cody

A: You are correct, sir. Eddie Guerrero did win the title from Brock Lesnar in 2004 and he was a WCW guy for many years, but he made the jump in 2000, which pre-dates the invasion angle. Should Rey defeat Miz for the title on Raw this Monday, he would break the drought.

Q: Where do you rank Joey Styles on the all-time list of greatest announcers in wrestling? Also, why do you think WWE never gave The British Bulldog a run with the WWF Title? – Troy M.

A: Joey Styles is a talented man and it could not have been easy to announce so many ECW shows by himself. That said, it’s a matter of personal preference and Styles does not crack my top 5 all-time list of wrestling announcers. Bulldog might have had a decent shot at a run with the title in late 1992-93 had he not failed a drug test and been fired by the company. He was hot off a classic Summerslam main event at Wembley Stadium and had a ton of momentum. As far as his later years in WWE, the timing simply wasn’t to his advantage as the company had people better suited for the role.

Q: Now that Vince McMahon is relieved of his duties and Triple H is the new Chairman, will he get rid of the PG? – Simon Babu

A: What is “the” PG? Sounds like a nasty rash you might need a doctor’s prescription for to help clear up. The reality is that Triple H has not, in fact, taken over as chairman. It’s a storyline that partially mirrors reality in that he is expected to take over for Vince at some point, but we’re still many months if not years away from that transition actually taking place. As for PG, it makes no difference either way. 95 percent of internet wrestling fans are still making a mess of their underwear over the whole CM Punk storyline, just as they did with his worked-shoot several weeks ago, all of which have taken place on a PG-rated show. I didn’t hear too many people complaining immediately after that took place. An edgier, more realistic product can definitely be PG if done correctly.

Q: A very reliable source claims CM Punk is now under contract with WWE and his free agency is now storyline. – Rory B.

A: Nice to meet you, the name’s Sense. Common Sense. I don’t come around these parts very often, but you’ll know me when you see me.

Q: Do the announcers and referees know the details of the match beforehand? For example, do Booker/JR/King/Cole/Matthews know who’s going to win and when certain crowd-pleasing moments are going to happen? That famous JR comment “As God as my witness, he is broken in half!” sounds purely genuine [and makes me think nobody] knew Undertaker was going to throw Mankind off the roof of the cell. – Jay

A: I don’t believe many people, if any, beyond Undertaker and Foley knew about that spot before their match. The announcers certainly didn’t. The announcers do have run sheets with notes in front of them and are made aware of things only on a “need to know” basis. Referees will have instructions relayed to them through their earpiece on what to do and where to position themselves at key moments, so they too do not necessarily know much in the way of details in advance.

Q: When did The Attitude Era officially end? A lot of people say when they changed there name from WWF to WWE. What you think? – Joe from Trenton, NJ

A: There is no specific date in which the Attitude Era came to a close, but I believe when Steve Austin shook Vince McMahon’s hand at WrestleMania 17, that era officially came to an end. WWF’s “boom” period as far as business certainly began it’s descent at that point. Austin ushered in that era (while stars like Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and The Rock certainly did their part) and was the central figure in the whole us vs. them, boss vs. employee storyline that really brought their business back from the brink in 1997-98. Once Austin aligned with the owner and turned heel, it was never the same again.

Q: Does it ever bother you how unless it’s a major pay-per-view, WWE doesn’t value the impact of finishers in a match? For example, it always annoys me when a wrestler, such as Kofi Kingston (a recent example) would hit his finisher (Trouble in Paradise) and then instead of the heel, such as Dolph Ziggler kicking out of the move, his foot ends up on the bottom rope or there’s some sort of hokey finish. I believe it makes a wrestler look stronger if they kick out of the finisher instead of getting the corny ending that a heel in the WWE usually gets. Also, does Cena’s version of the STF annoy you? I hate how he almost never hooks the opponent’s neck and the opponent taps as if he were being suffocated. – Fernando

A: Here’s a novel idea. Why even bother having people kick out of each other’s finishers all the time? It’s called a FINISHER for a reason. When you nail it, it’s supposed to be lights out. If you save your false finishes for only select PPV matches, it will feel more special. Otherwise, what’s the point of even having a finishing move? If I were a wrestler and I used my finisher and someone either kicked out from it or grabbed the bottom rope, I’d ditch that move in a heartbeat. As for Cena’s STF, it may be the single most ridiculous-looking submission hold ever used by a WWE main eventer. Mr. Socko is more intimidating.

Q: Why do people often complain about WWE’s style of wrestling? In my opinion, its the best way to keep your wrestlers safe, especially when they work 300+ days a year. It’s not smart to put your body at such risk and threaten your life for one crazy spot in a match. Besides I think it’s possible to put on a great match without 5 hurricanranas and suicide dives, just ask Christian and Randy Orton. – Raoul from Luxembourg

A: Can we stop with the fallacy that WWE guys still work 300+ days a year? During the 80’s, that was commonplace. These days, unless you’re spending many of your free days doing media like John Cena and Miz, you generally work 3-4 days per week. Yes, the travel is brutal, especially on those international tours. Frankly, I don’t know how they do it. But the issue people have with this notion of “WWE safe style” is that they feel a guy coming from the outside who may be known for highspots and the like, or for catering to the crowd a lot during their matches, will come to WWE and not be allowed to use those tools. Often times, they are right, but I would agree that it’s not a such a bad thing to ban certain dangerous maneuvers, to ban the act of blading oneself or tell your guys to slow things down a bit. John Cena and CM Punk’s performance at MITB is proof positive that you don’t need bells, whistles and dangerous spots to create magic between the ropes.

Steve Austin Movie Trailer, WWE Hiring Soap Opera Writers

13

– As previously reported, there are people in WWE who are very interested in bringing in experienced soap opera writers to join the company’s creative tam. One of the big reasons behind this push is that the soap opera industry is in very bad shape and they can likely sign some talented writers for much les than they could have 2-3 years ago. Additionally, WWE wants to improve its storylines and present compelling personal conflicts. An example of this would be the Vince McMahon – Triple H segment that ended this week’s RAW. *SPOILERS* WWE SmackDown Tapings Results For Tonight

53

Credit to reader Zelda Root for the following WWE SmackDown tapings results from Minneapolis, Minnesota, set to air this Friday on SyFy:

* SmackDown opens with Randy Orton sitting on a chair in the ring with the mic. He talks about the current state of the WWE. He calls out Christian and here comes the World Heavyweight Champion. Christian says Randy needs to work on his anger problem. They go back and forth for a bit, until Orton gets pissed and heads up the ramp only to be stopped by Teddy Long. Long says Randy will get a rematch but not tonight as he’s already agreed to face Kane in a street fight. He asks Orton to be the bigger man and walk away but Orton goes for Christian. The officials restrain him and Long informs Christian he’ll be facing Ezekiel Jackson after the break.

* World Champion Christian beat Intercontinental Champion Ezekiel Jackson with the Killswitch after a back and forth match with mixed crowd reaction for Christian. Anyone remember when these two faced off for who would be remembered as the last ever ECW Champion? Me neither.

* Michael Cole is in the ring and invites Smackdown’s Mr. Money in the Bank, Daniel Bryan out. He comes out and Cole rips him for a while. Bryan says he doesn’t care what Cole thinks. Bryan talks about the physical sacrifices he’s made to get to the WWE. Bryan says he’s going to the first champion to announce when he’s going to cash in ahead of time because apparently he’s never heard of Rob Van Dam. He announces he’s cashing in April 1st in Miami at WrestleMania and fulfill his lifetime dream. Out comes Heath Slater for some unfathomable reason. He gives a heel promo and they start a match. I’m guessing there will be commercials during this match.

* Daniel Bryan beat Heath Slater with some submission move I didn’t recognize (not the LaBelle Lock). This was a pretty decent match considering Heath Slater was involved. The crowd liked Bryan but Heath’s involvement minimized crowd reaction somewhat.

* Matt Striker interviews Mark Henry backstage. Mark Henry says he has no regrets and everyone should fear him.

* Wade Barrett and Sheamus went to a double count out. They continued brawling after the match and eventually ended up back in the ring where Barrett ate a Brogue Kick. Seemed like Sheamus may be in the midst of a slow face turn.

* Kane gives a backstage promo saying he’ll use Randy Orton to kill his humanity and be a monster again.

* Randy Orton beat Kane in a street fight after an RKO onto a chair. Match saw Kane kick out of an RKO and Randy kick out of a chokeslam. Crowd was much more into this match than anything preceding it. Afterward Kane offered his hand and Randy shook it. Kane looked devastated by the loss.

Mark Henry came out and attacked Kane, doing the splash onto the chair around the ankle that he did to Big Show at MITB. Refs came to check on Kane and I assume this was the end of the TV taping.
