JR Blog: Brock Lesnar Sick Again & Possible WWE Return

3

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is back with another blog update, which you can read in its entirety over at JRsBarBQ.com. In this update, JR talks at length about the news of former UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar being forced to pull out of his next fight due to another bout with the stomach illness diverticulitis.

Here are some highlights of what JR said about:

Lesnar’s Illness: “Brock battled diverticulitis once before and the gastrointestinal ailment is a devastating foe. I’ve had diverticulitis and ended up having approximately 13 inches of my large intestine surgically removed while residing in intensive care for several days after the surgery. Diverticulitis is weak places in the wall of the colon that give away under pressure to form marble sized pouches that protrude through the colon wall. Mild cases of the ailment can be cured, as a rule, via rest, diet (little, red meat, no nuts or seeds, etc), and via the use of antibiotics. If the above listed treatments are unsuccessful, surgery becomes a more likely option. At some point the body must be freed of the toxins, essentially poisons, that take over one’s internal organs.

Whether Brock Lesnar Will Ever Return To WWE: The ‘Brock back to WWE rumors’ have already started which is an eye roller in my opinion. Brock is a UFC fighter. Brock was born to be a UFC fighter. Brock will be a UFC fighter until he decides otherwise. If Lesnar, for some highly unlikely reason can’t compete again in UFC, ‘perhaps’ he would entertain the thought of a one off, special appearance in WWE, like WrestleMania but that well may be nothing more than wishful thinking on some folk’s part and is, without question, nothing more than pure speculation.”

Shane Carwin Taking Lesnar’s Place Against Junior dos Santos: “MMA folks can now turn their attention to Shane Carwin taking this higher level fight on somewhat short notice even though Carwin had already been in training. Carwin’s a beast who can be problematic for any heavyweight but Dos Santos has such great hands that Carwin, or anyone else, must have keen, striking defense to withstand what Dos Santos will bring. However, the powerful and bigger Carwin has the distinct edge in this one IF he can take Junior down and utilize debilitating devastation while controlling a talented, strike first fighter who also wants to be the next UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Edge Discusses Future Plans, Online Impersonators, Zack Ryder

8

The latest issue of WWE Magazine features Edge’s “Final Interview” with the publication, after he announced his retirement last month. He discusses his most difficult days in the squared circle, the new generation of WWE, online impersonators, the legacy of the Spear and more.

Despite retiring, the “Rated-R Superstar” isn’t completely removing himself from the wrestling industry as he states in the interview that he plans to assist WWE’s next generation of stars.

An excerpt from the interview is as follows:

You are the only Superstar to win the King of the Ring tournament, the Royal Rumble, and a Money in the Bank Ladder Match. You’ve also main-evented ‘Mania. Now that you’ve retired from the ring, is there anything you feel you didn’t accomplish?

I wish the European Championship were still around. That way, I could have thrown the title on the résumé, too. I am a collector. But now, more than anything for me, it’s about trying to help the next generation, kind of in the same way the last generation helped. I’ll give advice to anyone: Sheamus, John Morrison, Drew McIntyre or Dolph Ziggler.

You’re taking an interest in WWE’s younger talent, but you’ve failed to mention your one-time protégé, Zack Ryder. Have you seen his Web series, “Z! True Long Island Story”?

No, I have not. As I’ve fully admitted in the past, I’m not an Internet guy. I would like to take this time now to say that I don’t have a Facebook page. My mom is very bothered by the world of Facebook and people claiming to be me online. I don’t get too worked up about it, but it really gets Christian hot on Twitter. He calls out people who say they’re Edge. But back to Zack–I think he’s a very underutilized Superstar on the roster, and I feel the same about Curt Hawkins, too. I’d like to showcase what they can do and remind everyone who may have forgotten about them.

Kurt Angle Comments On TNA Being Perceived As ‘WWE-Lite’

23

Recap of Kurt Angle’s appearance on the Busted Open satellite radio show on Sirius 92 and XM 207.

On the name change to Impact Wrestling. Is TNA gone?: “Gone, yeah. Impact Wrestling is the new name of the company. I personally believe in it because when it comes down to it, you can’t take the word wrestling out of pro wrestling. Any storyline, or any feud…when you do that, it’s entertainment and you’re doing the storylines, but where does it ultimately end up? In the wrestling ring. At the PPV, the payoff. So how can you take wrestling out of pro wrestling….you can’t. That’s what they (the fans) buy tickets for. They buy tickets to watch guys wrestle. Not to be actors and entertain us. They pay to watch great wrestling.”

When followed up with the point that Vince McMahon might disagree with Angle’s opinion: “Hey, you know what, it’s a boost for us. If he wants to go that way, we’ll go the other way.”

On Hulk Hogan and the perception that TNA has become ‘WWE-lite’: “Yes, I believe when we brought in Hulk Hogan, and I will say this from the bottom of my heart, I love Hulk Hogan. He is a great addition to our company. But he too realizes that it can’t be ‘total nonstop talk’. We have a lot of characters on the show that don’t wrestle. Some that wrestle every once in awhile, but really ultimately you’re talking about Dixie Carter being on the show sometimes. You got Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff, Ric Flair, Mick Foley. I mean I’m just naming a few that don’t wrestle and they’re on the show all the time. You start seeing a little too much talking and not enough wrestling. We are now in the process of going to more wrestling.

“Beer Money matches with Motor City Machine Guns. You couldn’t beat that. My matches with A.J. Styles… you can’t beat that. Those are the kinds of things I’ve talked to Dixie Carter personally about. I said I would rather give the fans great matches on TV, incredible five stars matches, right now, even if our pay-per-views suffer. I rather do that now and get our ratings up, and then work on our pay-per-views, then try to get pay-per-views now and have our ratings stay down. It’s better to have wrestling on the shows because it’s different. It’s not like the other company.”

On Chyna’s debut: “She looked good. She looked healthy too. You know what, even though we only had 1,400 people there, the response that just came from those fans sent a big message to Hulk Hogan and Dixie Carter, and myself as well, that Chyna will always be a huge name. It was cool because when they introduced her…people were like ‘holy, no way. Chyna. She’s coming. Oh my God,’ and then she came out and she looked good. It was like, she is back. It was one of the feel-good moments for Impact Wrestling.

“I mean, Chyna is going to cause a ruckus in Impact Wrestling. I hope they have her wrestle the guys. Impact Wrestling is very pro-women as far as women wresting women. I remember when Awesome Kong (Kharma) came in and I told Jeff Jarrett I want to wrestle her right now. Let me put me over. He’s like ‘no, she’s going with women’. I believe Chyna should go with the guys eventually.”

Book Excerpt – Lesnar Explains Why He Was Envious Of Kane

9

Brock Lesnar reveals in his autobiography Death Clutch that he was envious of Kane during his time in WWE because he wrestled with a mask on, which allowing him to maintain his privacy outside the ring.

An excerpt from the book is as follows: “I like to stay home, spend time with my family, and be left alone. My life is my life. It’s nobody’s business what goes on in my house, or with my wife or my children. I won’t intrude on your private life. Don’t intrude on mine.

“That’s why, in some ways, the WWE character I envied the most was Kane. He had the greatest gig ever, because he was a big star who wore a mask on TV. When he went home, he’d get to take off the mask and live a normal life. Nobody knew what he looked like, and no one ever bothered him when he went about his personal life. He must have had about as normal a life as you can have in professional wrestling.”

Lesnar continued about wanting privacy when he’s not out performing.

“When I’m on the job, in the ring, at the arena, I’m there to entertain you. I understand that. You paid to see me, and I owe it to you to make sure your money was well spent. But when I’m not on the job, I don’t think I owe anything to anybody. If you’re a plumber, and you’re out to dinner with your family, would you like it if the waiter walked up and said, ‘Hey, the toilet just backed up, can you come in the back and fix it?’ Probably not. You are there to eat, not to fish tampons out of the drain pipe. When I’m enjoying some time with my family, I’m not at work. I’m not ‘on.’ I’m not there to entertain anyone.”

He also noted his frustration with WWE’s strenuous road schedule.

“My first year on the main roster in WWE was a blur. My second year was even worse,” he wrote. “The money was great, and I was buying a lot of nice things, but I had no time to enjoy any of it. That touring schedule just eats you up. I just kept thinking that there has to be a better way to make some real money.”

Excerpts from the book, which was co-written by Paul Heyman, are available here. It is scheduled for release on May 24.

The support he received from the WWE during Dancing with the stars.

“I don’t see why they wouldn’t want to support it 100%, you have an audience of 23 million every week and hearing the words WWE every single week and seeing one of their guys performing on a whole different level and wowing people and breaking the stereotypes of what a wrestler is and what a wrestler does, but some of it was a no brainer for them.”

Dancing As ‘Chris Irvine’ One Week On DWTS:

“I was dancing for my Mom and that week was a very open and raw performance, and it was the producers idea to have me dance as Chris Irvine, which was a cool experience, it was a very moving performing and fitting.”

On WWE blacklisting the word ‘wrestling’ from it’s product.

“As long as there is a ring nag guys in spandex throwing each other around it’s gonna be wrestling, you can call it what you want but if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck and moves like a it’s a duck, it’s always gonna be wrestling.”

On whether he’ll return to the WWE.

“Everybody asks, ‘when are you coming back?’ and I don’t know if I’ll ever come back, I have no plans of it… I still love the WWE, I love watching it, but I don’t know if I’ll ever come back.”

Brock Lesnar’s Health Problems Resurface: June Fight Off

15

UFC president Dana White announced on Thursday that Brock Lesnar’s ongoing health problems related to the stomach illnesss diverticulitis have returned and he is being forced to pull out of his upcoming fight at UFC 131 on June 11th.

Lesnar had been scheduled to fight Junior Dos Santos in fight that would have determined the next challenger to Cain Velasquez’ Heavyweight Championship. Shane Carwin, who got choked out by then-champion Brock Lesnar last July, will now face Dos Santos next month.

Lesnar, who might need to undergo “life changing surgery” in the near future, says his career is not over and vows to return to the cage once again:

“I’m not retiring. This isn’t the end of my fight career. I believe there’s a solution to every problem. This isn’t the end of Brock Lesnar. This is a speed bump in the road.”

Lesnar is being treated once again at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota – the same facility that treated him back in 2009 when he first battled diverticulitis. He insists this most recent bout with the stomach illness is not as serious as last time (when he was fighting for his life) – but the condition was preventing him from training for the Dos Santos fight.

MAILBAG: Should Christian Sue WWE For Taking The Title?

34

SEScoops Mailbag for May 12th

(submit YOUR questions to [email protected])

Q: Kane used to wear a mask because he was a “Burn Victim”. But now that I see him without it, I see no signs of any burns on him. I do admit he isn’t the best looking guy, but he is not burned. WWE kept this “Burn Victim” thing going for a while and then scrapped the idea. So did WWE just think that fans would forget this? – Abbas Rezwi

A: It was made quite clear shortly after Kane lost his mask that he only THOUGHT he was burned all of those years. It was all psychological. It wasn’t an angle that was dropped. I do wonder though if the original plan was, in fact to use makeup for facial scars and they changed course when the mascara on his face rubbed off that night from the sweat when he lost his mask.

Q: Back when Triple H feuded with [Randy] Orton, when Orton [delivered an RKO to Stephanie], was HHH really pissed off or just acting for the cameras? – Keith

A: He was really pissed off…for the cameras.

Q: Has any WWE talent ever tried to sue the company for being a victim of backstage politics? If you were Christian, would you have sued after they screwed him over 5 days after he won the belt? Do you think it is to make a new storyline or is it just [a reflection of Vince’s opinion] of Christian? – Dean Hydra

A: Unless your name is Hulk Hogan and you’re smart enough to work a clause into your contract giving you 100% creative control over your character, you cannot sue over bad creative. If that were the case, then all of us could band together and file a class action lawsuit right now citing the last 10 years. You also would have no case if you feel you were wronged by “backstage politics” because it’s so difficult to define, unless you can prove it as a form of discrimination. Then you MIGHT have a case, but you’re still going to need a really good attorney.

Q: I was just reading the mailbag for last week when this question popped into my head. How does the WWE decide who becomes champion? I know the wrestlers don’t just go at it in the ring and see who comes out the champ, but was just wondering how they decided to put the titles on people, and not just the big ones either but even the Tag and Intercontinental titles? – John, Pennsylvania

A: The criteria for being a champion in 2011 is very different from what it would have been in even 1998. Typically, your champion is the person who will help draw you the most money. They are the person that will draw big quarter hours on TV, help sell tickets to house shows, help sell PPV buys and move merchandise. For example, nobody was better at this in the late-90’s than Steve Austin. When he wasn’t the champion, the money was in his pursuit of the title. These days, ideally, you want your champion to do the same, but the difference is now, they will put the title on a young guy and hope that, by doing so, that helps get them over. Of course, this is an ass backwards philosophy that rarely works (see case file: Swagger, Jack). When it’s on someone like John Cena or Randy Orton – basically 98.6% of the time – it’s because they feel they are the best person to sell tickets to house shows. As for the secondary titles, like the IC or US, it’s usually a way to get a mid-carder into a meaningful feud, or to help elevate someone from low to upper mid-card status. This worked wonders back in the day for guys like Honky Tonk Man and Mr. Perfect, but means absolutely nothing these days because they treat their champions like shit. As a matter of fact, on the recent draft show, they had both Sheamus (US champ at the time) and Wade Barrett (IC champ) lose singles matches cleanly for no good reason whatsoever. It doesn’t matter who holds those belts because we’ve been conditioned not to care.

Q: What your are thoughts on WWE not allowing Sable to take bumps and how other girls say they had to carry her? – Brandon

A: I’d say good for WWE trying to protect its investment. The problem is once they started putting Sable in the ring and put the Women’s title on her, I can totally understand where that resentment would come from. Sable did take some bumps, but it was never anything too crazy that she wasn’t comfortable doing. Now, on the flip side, she became the hottest female attraction in the company and both of her Playboys sold millions of copies, so she made the company a lot of money. How much money did Ivory or Tori make for WWE? I’m guessing not nearly as much. At the end of the day, it’s a business and you need to protect your golden goose.

Q: I can’t understand why certain young stars get squashed while others get pushed. For example, why are Mason Ryan and Ezekiel Jackson getting pushed while guys like David Hart Smith and the Usos remain in limbo? I’ve heard criticisms of lack of character/mic skills, but Jackson and Ryan cut some of the worst promos I’ve seen in long time. I find myself perplexed week after week, asking myself what do these two guys have to offer? Why are they getting precious television time when a guy like Seth Rollins (Tyler Black) remains in developmental hell? – Matt Isaia

A: Let’s see, what do Mason Ryan and Ezekiel Jackson have in common. Well, one is a white guy with a Welsh accent and the other is a black man who bears a striking resemblance to Suge Knight, so that can’t be it. Oh yes, they’re both big dudes who aren’t particularly good workers. The key word there, of course, is BIG. Vince McMahon has always had this infatuation with big, jacked up men and no matter how many times they tell you that they push plenty of smaller guys today (which may well be true), the fact remains that a big man will always have far more opportunities to succeed than will a smaller man. Great Khali is another example, and let us not forget Jackson Andrews, Tyson Kidd’s short-lived bodyguard who they couldn’t wait to rush onto TV before they realized how green he was and sent him back down to FCW.

Q: WWE has title matches at house shows, but the title never changes hands. I understand that title changes are good for TV ratings, but wouldn’t title changes on house shows make the product more realistic? – SCSAFan

A: Not only would it add a sense of realism and unpredictability to the house shows, but I would argue that it would lead to an increase in ticket sales. Granted, it would be a modest increase, nothing crazy, but if you give people a reason to believe that something big might happen at a live event, they would be more inclined to attend. To be honest, it doesn’t even have to involve titles. I don’t understand why WWE doesn’t film an angle every now and then (you can’t do it all the time or it kills its effectiveness) on a house show and air the footage on Raw or Smackdown. They’ve done before, like when Steve Austin was going to the turnbuckles to pose after a match and “collapsed” or when an angle involving Eddie Guerrero and JBL led to Eddie’s mother having a heart attack (they even solidified the Diesel heel turn in 1996 at an MSG house show when he cracked a steel chair across HBK’s back), and I would like to see more it.

Q: Was there a particular reason behind WWE announcing Limp Bizkit as their “favorite band in the whole world” at WrestleMania 19? – Ryan B.

A: Alcohol, I’m sure.

— With the WWE roster growing increasingly thin due to retirements, injuries and people taking time off, you can be sure that WWE is aware of the situation and looking at ways to strengthen the RAW and SmackDown rosters. Another superstar who is expected back with WWE in the coming months is Chris Jericho. Now that Jericho’s run on Dancing With The Stars has concluded, most within WWE believe his return is imminent. Ric Flair Wants To Wrestle Sting, Talks Euro Tour Incident

19

TNA star Ric Flair Ric a few radio appearances this week and as usual with the Nature Boy, there are some newsworthy items to report.

During an appearance on Mark Madden’s radio show on Tuesday, Flair said he wants a shot at Sting’s TNA World Heavyweight title some time this summer. This comes just days after reports that Hulk Hogan is training for an in-ring return and wants to challenge Sting at Bound For Glory later this fall.

Flair also appeared on radio station WFNZ’s afternoon show “The Drive” on Tuesday and discussed a number of wrestling-related topics , including his decision to attend Shawn Michaels WWE’s Hall of Fame induction in Atlanta last month. Flair said TNA had “no problem” appearing at WWE’s Hall of Fame ceremony and he plans on attending next year’s ceremony in Miami.

Flair also spoke about his highly-publicized meltdown that took place during TNA’s European tour earlier this year. After widespread reports that Flair was left behind by TNA following a dispute over TNA being unwilling to advance Flair money. Here’s what Flair said about the situation:

“When you work for WWE, you are used to funds being available for you, if you think I am going to spend my own money, you are out of your mind. With Vince…like any other company that grows, you have growing pains, financial growing pains.”

“When you agree to go overseas, you assume you are going like any other company and very simply, I wasn’t informed differently. I said, ‘Hey I need some money while I’m here. I’m not blowing up my credit card. Just pay me what you owe me every night’ and they don’t do that. I wasn’t told in a very nice way so I stayed in the hotel for another day. I’m not knocking. I think TNA is great, just they have growing pains.”

Credit to Jacob Jones and PWInsider.com for these spoiler results:

* The Jarretts come out and offer a truce to Kurt Angle as Jeff doesn’t want her to be put in harm’s way at the Sacrifice PPV on Sunday. The crowd is chanting for Angle. Karen says that Kurt’s been hurt too many times and now that’s made him believe that she’s out to get him. She says they have a restraining order out for his own well being and asks Angle to come out. Kurt comes out and says he can’t believe he stayed married to her. Angle announces a mixed tag match between himself & “his business partner” against the Jarretts for the PPV. He says that Jarrett knows who she is and she’s real, damn real.

* Mickie James & Miss Tessmacher defeated Madison Rayne & Tara.

* Beer Money cut a promo and pretty much intimate that they are waiting for Matt Hardy to call Jeff Hardy to face them at Sacrifice without using Jeff’s name. Matt comes out and says they showed guts when they dared call out Hulk Hogan, but they still make him sick and are worthless. Matt says he and Jeff Hardy were raised to be champions and he and his partner are going to take the belts at Sacrifice. But, his partner isn’t Jeff Hardy. Out comes, I swear to God, Chris Harris. It’s Harris and Hardy vs. Beer Money.

* Sangriento pinned Suicide.

* Eric Bischoff, Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair come out immediately after the match. Flair kicks Suicide low. Hogan says that he runs the show and he’s tired of waiting. He wants to know who is running games for the network right now or else. Out comes Mick Foley. Foley said that Hulk may have conned his way into the company and they might think that they were the smartest men in wrestling, but now things are going to start to unravel. He said that on 3/3, Jeff Hardy was the champ but then the Network saw what what happening and brought Sting back to TNA and now he’s the champion. Foley said that Hogan won’t be able to ruin this show and more because this show is called “Impact Wrestling” because it’s supposed to be about wrestling. He announces a Battle Royal to determine the number one contender to the TNA title and then says he’d like to introduce Kurt Angle’s partner at Sacrifice. A video appears, eventually spelling the word CHYNA and she comes out on the stage with Foley. She got, seriously, a MONSTER pop. Everyone chanted her name.

* Crimson defeated Abyss and Samoa Joe. Abyss attacked Crimson and left him laying.

* They re-tape the ENTIRE segment with Mick Foley coming out to confront Immortal. Crowd was dead for this. There were a few small line changes, including Mick saying this show wasn’t “TNA” but “Impact Wrestling” so there’s the marketing stuff you guys wrote about last week or so.

* Mr. Anderson wins the Battle Royal. Chyna ran out and tossed out Jarrett. She went after Karen but Jeff saved her and they ran away. Dreamer got tossed by Bully Ray even though they are now partners. Steiner and Morgan eliminated each other. Hardy and Beer Money eliminated each other. In the end, Anderson tossed Ray out.
